Like I’m not saying my parents were stupid but they had me tested for autism/adhd when I was like 5, right? And it’s less that they were stupid for doing that and more stupid for assuming I didn’t understand what a test was or that I could intuit the “correct” answers. Like let’s look at a physical counterpart, shall we? I had them fully convinced that I had reflexes in my right leg until I was like ten & decided on a whim “huh. I think I won’t kick today” and everybody freaked out

So they were counting on me being stupid enough not to realize I was being tested, OR smart enough to realize it wasn’t a test of how good I was at pretending to be normal, and I was solidly in the middle, assured that I was totally acing this shit. I knew which behaviors were desirable, just like I knew I was supposed to kick when they hit my knee with the hammer.

So I don’t count that assessment bc frankly, without remembering it I can’t say I didn’t lie through my teeth the whole time. Far as I’m concerned my first ‘valid’ assessment is the one I made my childhood psychologist administer during my hypochondriac phase & even that one’s a bit questionable

The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.

Sirius read the first line of the well-thumbed paperback that Remus had left open on the armchair when he'd gone to the kitchenette to make tea.

Remus was now in the doorway, a cup in each hand. Sirius could smell the coffee as he handed it over. Sweet, life-giving coffee. He'd never understand Remus' aversion to the stuff.

Remus caught the book still open in Sirius' hands as he sat back down. He regarded Sirius over his cup and asked, "Fancy giving it a go?"

Sirius gave a bark of laughter, handed the book back to Remus, and took a sip of coffee.

"You know I can't get on with that Muggle stuff."

Remus smiled a little and drank his tea.

But he knew he'd piqued Remus' interest. And Remus liked nothing more than talking about the books he loved.

"What's it about?" Sirius asked.

"Oh, you know... love...the loss of innocence. The bounds of class that constrain us. The power of memory to both conceal and reveal..."

"A cheery read then?" Sirius quipped.

Remus' eyes twinkled. Merlin, how he loved it when they did that.

Remus put down his cup and said, dryly, "Naturally."

Sirius thought for a moment. He put down his cup, turned to Remus, and began to recite from memory, "You flew too near to the sun, and you were scorched. This cindery creature is what you made me.'

Remus looked dumbfounded.

"You've read it."

Sirius smiled.

"Yes."

"When?"

"When you read it for the first time and kept going on about how amazing it was."

"That was years ago..."

"Yes," Sirius conceeded.

He was gratified to see a slight blush threaten Remus' cheeks.

"I didn't think you'd listen."

Sirius smiled, sunk back into the sofa, and said, "I always listened, Moony."

19 years to the day since i started playing ol’ neopets.gov. i am & always will be immeasurably grateful for the people it brought into my life (okay, most of them) and the paths it’s taken me down. i may not have been using the site itself since the NFT debacle, but i have my neoclone of choice. my neopets themselves may be locked behind a ‘change your password’ wall since the data leak, one i don’t care to climb, but they’re more than just pixels on a screen, you know? i always had a hard time accepting that, but being out of it for so long now, i really do understand what everyone was trying to tell me. you couldn’t take ‘em away any easier than you could take my tattoo. hell, it’d probably be harder--my data hoarding’s much more impenetrable than my skin.

and they’re not what really matters, anyway. the people i met through this site--my teenage guilds, my school buddies, my gay little family--if i could tell 9 year old clare how loved & accepted she’d feel one day, she would instantly attack me. like literally no hesitation. idk why it’s so hard for people to grasp that if i’d seen a version of my future self it would have been on-sight until one of us established dominance

The way that book 3 wants you to believe everyone loves Simon so much and he's so cool and yet he continues to suck ass and be an annoyance and rude to everyone... we get it cassandra he's based on your husband and you clearly suck too so you don't see the red flags I hope you guys get divorced

Reading so many Regency romances is starting to feel weird because the same early nineteenth century celebrities keep popping up in the background as extras.
