Substitute Teacher Steve Au
Delilah felt nervous. She ran into her little brother Paul in the hall because neither of them were looking in the correct direction...too nervous.
She hurried into her English class and grabbed her seat. The class's energy was off the charts. Everyone was chatting and gossiping.
"-sub! Can you believe THE St-"
"I just don't understand? Arent they fam-"
Uh oh. She thinks she understands now and pulls out her flip phone to type out a quick text to Paul to warn him. It's too late. He already texted her first.
"Code purple"
"Fuck."
"Language B!"
"Shit."
He laughs as he walks into the classroom. Someone slaps her shoulder as if they're trying to tell her "Hey! He looked in your direction!!!!"
Sitting on her teacher's desk is retired pop icon Steve Harrington. He lights up when he sees her looking at him and waves to her. He's waving so fast his hand is a blur.
"Del what the hell is happening?" Mandy, her best friend is looking at her expectantly.
"I-"
"Ok class! Attendance time!!"
'Adams'
'Andrews'
'Chase'
'Finch'
"Henderson!"
"..."
"C'mom B," he looks at her disappointed.
"Here," she grumbles.
A girl in the back raises her hand.
"Can this wait until after the attendance is taken?"
"Unfortunately not Mr. Harrington I just have to know, how do you know Delilah? Why do you call her B? I mean out of everyone we were not expecting you to be here for her." She says the last part kind of like a sneer.
Delilah knew she wasn't the most popular but she made a choice to stay out of the spotlight.
"Well...student-"
"Sam."
"Sam, I'm not here for Delilah."
Gasps went around the room.
"I'm also here for Paul!" His famous bright smile is shining bright. "He's getting his braces off today! Isn't that exciting! Gosh I remember when his dad got his off. Brings a tear to my eye."
Delilah sinks lower into her seat.
"As for the nickname-"
She shoots up, ramrod straight.
"Um Uncle Steve you don't really have to-"
"Now B it's nothing to be embarrassed about. When Del's mom was pregnant with Paul we told her that she wouldn't be the baby anymore. She was so frustrated that was the only name she responded to for six months!"
Sam pipes up again, "so B is short for-"
"Baby." Snickers went around the room. Delilah groans. "Obviously we couldn't go around calling her baby that's weird. So we shortened it, nickname. It also helps because she's baby Henderson, helps to distinguish the difference between them all."
Steve gives her a soft smile, like he's still imagining her as a toddler.
"As most of you may know I retired about five years ago along with my boyfriend." (Gay marriage was not legal yet but she's working on it.)
Josh's hand shoots up. "Your boyfriend famous metal musician Eddie Munson?"
"Yes student in the back, we decided it was time to retire and enjoy our time together. Then I got bored. I was always planning on being a teacher if music didn't work out so I became a sub. We have a house here to see the kids and I knew I wanted my first assignment to be one where I could see my favorite Hendersons."
Ok she can't be mad at him. She loves him so much and he obviously is just doing what he can to be closer to her.
"Uncle Steve-"
Uncle is whispered around the room.
"I appreciate you coming here but-"
"Henderson I'd appreciate it if you stayed after school to help me grade papers. I can give you a ride home. Uncle Eds is taking Paul to the orthodontist now so you don't have to worry about driving him."
Conveniently, beeping was heard outside along with the sound of a motor like an engine revving. The students all ran to the window to see what was going on and were shown Paul with his head down running to the convertible.
Poor kid. Everyone would be talking about this for at least a week.
Paul looked over at the window along with Eddie, when he saw Steve he blew him a kiss. As soon as Paul was buckled up he sped off.
Steve sighed wistfully and then headed back to the desk.
"Alright everyone! Let's learn!"

Henry Cavill will take on the iconic role of the Highlander himself Connor MacLeod – portrayed in the original by Christopher Lambert.

Lionsgate Moving Forward With Henry Cavill & Chad Stahelski ‘Highlander’ Reboot As Action-Fantasy Pic Heads To AFM To Enliven A Strike-Hit Market
By Andreas Wiseman
October 27, 2023 8:17am
EXCLUSIVE: In the world of Highlander reboots, there can still only be one…and it’s a good one at that.
For the first time, Lionsgate will be launching sales at the AFM on their long-gestating fantasy reboot which has Henry Cavill aboard to star as the eponymous Scottish swordsman and John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski set to direct.
We hear this will be a big-budget proposition, north of $100M. Stahelski himself has previously talked about it as akin to John Wick with swords. The team is eyeing a 2024 start.
This will be welcome news for AFM buyers whose pool of pre-sale projects has been diminished by the ongoing strike.
The new movie will be based on the 1986 original, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another and collecting more power. The time-jumping film — with its “There can be only one” tagline — spawned four sequels and three TV series including the popular USA series starring Adrian Paul. Queen memorably provided the soundtrack for the original movie.
Producing the reboot are Joshua Davis, Fast And The Furious producer Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski (thru his 87Eleven Entertainment production company) and Louise Rosner.
The current draft of the screenplay is by Mike Finch. The late Peter S. Davis, the producer of the original Highlander, initiated the development of the new film. Summit first acquired remake rights to the original in 2008.
Former Superman and The Witcher actor Cavill remains in high demand. Among movies in post are Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle and two Guy Ritchie projects, including WWII pic The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Stahelski has directed all four John Wick films, which have been a goldmine for Lionsgate, taking more than $1BN. He previously talked about the new Highlander as the first in a trilogy but we’ve not had word whether that’s still the case.
Cavill and Stahelski were attached and reported before the strike.
The arrival of the Highlander reboot is a shot in the arm for the AFM, whose business has been hampered by the SAG-AFTRA strike. This and Kevin Costner’s Horizon movies, which we told you this week would also be on sale, are the two biggest-budget prospects revealed for the market so far. A number of packages haven’t come together or aren’t being officially announced due to strike restrictions or anxiety over optics. Frankly, given the limitations posed by the strike, I’ve been surprised at the number of new or reworked projects that are on sale (many are shooting in Europe). There are still a handful of pre-sales packages for buyers to get their teeth into, even if more action may be done this market on completed and near-completed movies.
I'm all for Henry in a kilt! 😊

Batman (2016) Vol.3 Annual #1 Readthrough
Tis be the season, and in the spirit of that we are going to look into some holiday comics. And we are going to start with Batman Annual #1, a Christmas anthology.
The book opens with the most famous tale of the book: Tom King and David Finch’s Eisner winning Good Boy.
The story opens with an example of the damage that the Joker does on a daily basis. In this case, Joker left a bunch of dogs behind to go feral, and only one has survived: a hound in an Ace mask.
We then cut to best butler, Alfred Pennyworth, going to the dog pound to adopt the surviving dog. The book then cuts to an amusing scene where Bruce is ambushed by the aggressive dog and is mildly annoyed. Bruce doesn’t seem to think that the dog can recover from the trauma that Joker put him under.
But Alfred isn’t one to give up! Before the Christmas season, the butler spends time trying to train the dog. And slowly but surely the dog starts to behave and is willing to trust.
In a heartwarming moment, Ace comes towards Batman after a rough night out. By Christmas, it has gotten to the point where Bruce is giving the dog a bat mask. And in a hilarious moment, Bruce asks Alfred what his Christmas present is not realizing Ace is the present.
This is easily one of the best stories Tom King ever wrote and is the best story in the annual. David Finch does some decent art that makes the story work. However, there is some better art in this annual.
And one of the stories with better art is Silent Night by Scott Snyder and Ray Fawkes with art by Delcan Shalvey.
The story opens with an exploration of how Batman is able to respond to crimes so fast. Bats has tapped into Gotham’s 911 call centers, with a computer listening to key words. If there are enough context clues, Batman gets an alert to go to the call.
We cut to Gotham’s Time Square analogue where a group of people dressed in trench coats arrive. This being Gotham, citizens call it in, and Batman shows up thinking that this might be a terrorist attack.
But as a pleasant surprise, the group happens to be street performers to some fancy acrobatics. In a true Christmas miracle, Bruce actually gets a moment of peace because there isn’t any trouble in Gotham that requires Batman.
Next is The (Not So) Silent Night of Harley Quinn by Batman legends Paul Dini and Neal Adams. And it is just a riff on the classic tale where Batman carols with the police and no crime happens because of his influence on Gotham.
In this version, Batman captures Harley after she tries to sneak in Gordan’s holiday party. Bats drives Harley out of Gotham while Harley does some singing in the Batmobile. As this is happening, we get to see hijinks where things almost happen but through acts of little madness, everything turns out all right. My personal least favorite story from the bunch.
Next is Stag by Steve Orlando and Riley Rossmo. And this story is actually a lead into the pair’s then upcoming Batman/Spirit mini. Before we go any farther this has my artwork in the annual.
The story opens with Bruce, Commissioner Gordon, and new character Barry O’Neil opening a winter wonderland for Gotham. But then we get a Steve Orlando classic of using an obscure character, Mister Blizzard shows up to cause trouble because … he wants a new ice age?
Anyway, we get a good moment of Bruce leaving to get into his Batman gear. And very quickly, Batman takes Mister Blizzard. We then get a discussion from O’Neil, regretting that his attempt to bring joy to Gotham’s children went that badly.
The story ends with Bruce lamenting to Duke Thomas that O’Neil has been a charitable icon to Gotham since he was child. As Bruce wonders what Gotham would be without O’Neil, the old man is assassinated by a mysterious figure.
The annual ends with The Insecurity Diversion by Scott Bryan Williams and art by Bilquis Evely.
This story opens with Gotham under attack chemical anxiety-causing gas (ala Scarecrow’s fear toxin). We also got a new villainess, Haunter, at Arkham’s holiday party. And because this is a short story, both factors lead to Haunter escaping the asylum.
The book explains that Haunter has the power to kill people from their DNA, and she is pals with the Scarecrow. The fear-loving crook did Haunter a solid and let her escape.
However, Batman comes to stop the pair of villains. He exposes the villains to a nerve-toxin to capture the pair. And that is the end of this forgettable story.
Overall, this annual is a fun read. While there are some stories that are better than others, there isn’t a bad one in the bunch. Art throughout the book was spectacular.
7.5/10

okay i think i’ve seen batman v superman a hundred times now so here are some of my favourite things/quotes from it because that movie blows my mind and makes me go absolutely feral:
the way batman hangs there up in the corner of that old house in silence like some huge demon-bat
when senator finch says “take a bucket of piss and call it granny’s peach tea, i’m not gonna drink it” and then in the courtroom she sees the glass with the label ‘granny’s peach tea’ and we all just immediately Know
literally every time senator finch and lex luthor interact with each other
lex pointing at the paradise lost painting and saying “that should be upside down; we know better now, don’t we? devils don’t come from hell beneath us, no, they come from the sky,” and at the end we see the painting upside down; because he obviously talks about clark, but the real devils (darkseid and steppenwolf) really do come from the skies — from the stars
the way the world engine’s sound can be heard throughout bruce’s (k)nightmares
robin’s costume in that glass cage, like some kind of morbid exhibition, always reminding bruce of his failure — and the wayne manor is basically exactly the same thing
just. lex’s whole speech in the library, when he’s like “books are knowledge and knowledge is power, and i am… no. um, no… what am i? what was i saying? the bittersweet pain among men is having knowledge with no power because… because that is [angrily] PARADOXICAL! , and, um… thank you for coming,” and then just walks off
night and day by richard cheese playing in the background while clark and bruce talk for the first time (not knowing who’s the other) — because they are, of course, the night and the day
when lex shakes clark’s hand and says, “ow! wow, that is a good grip! you should not pick a fight with this person,” like HELLO????? THATS LITERALLY— I— DHFJFKJRKRKF OMG
the whole “must there be a superman?” sequence: the quotes, especially “is it really surprising that the most powerful man in the world should be a figure of controversy?,” and “we have always created icons in our image; what we’ve done is we project ourselves onto him. the fact is, maybe he’s not some sort of devil or jesus character, maybe he’s just a guy trying to do the right thing,” and the images of clark refering to artworks, like jesus carrying the cross or atlas with the world on his shoulders
oh just the Symbolism™ through the whole movie oh my god, and the way it’s full of shots that are references to paintings
like: napoléon bonaparte by benjamin robert haydon
and the descent from the cross by peter paul rubens

and the archangel michael defeating satan by guido reni
and the lamentation of christ by jan lievens

and clark going up on the mountain and talking with his dead father vs bruce going into the old wayne manor and talking about his dead father in the very next scene
and the parallel between bruce letting wayne manor slowly crumbling to the ground and lex keeping everything the same in his dad’s old room
lex on the helipad with the little blue ball in his hand, which is the world; so he holds the world in his hand
the whole lex luthor speech on the helipad, especially: “i figured out way back: if god is all-powerful, he cannot be all-good. and if he’s all-good, then he cannot be all-powerful,” and “the greatest gladiator match in the history of the world: god versus man, day versus night, son of krypton versus bat of gotham,” and “close, but i am not talking about lois. no, every boy’s special lady is his mother,” and “there we go. there we go. and now god bends to my will”
clark as a saviour god vs the vengeful god of bruce in the storm:
just the fact that the name martha is the thing that finally stops bruce, as he realizes that clark has a mother, he’s as much of a son as bruce is, and being human isn’t just about being born here etc.
bruce saying “i’ll make you a promise: martha won’t die tonight,” not like that other martha on that other night — and he goes and saves this martha instead of the one he couldn’t........ idk it always makes me tear up
the whole warehouse fight obviously
lex saying “no man in the sky intervened when i was a boy to deliver me from daddy’s fist and abominations,” and then later clark, the man in the sky, intervenes when the fist of an abomination is about to hit him
that scene where doomsday is looking up at the sculpture, then down at the real superman, so we have this image of the symbol of the man, the reality of the man, and this monster between them; i can’t really explain what it is about this image but it hits me hard every time
the gunshots and falling shells at the beginning with bruce’s parents being murdered vs at the end during the funeral
‘if you seek his monument, look around you’
and i’m forgetting a lot of other scenes and things of course,,, i just love this movie very much

“The Road” exhibition collected images from 46 artists from across the country to create an exhibition that celebrates, highlights and explores the American road and all that it in-tells. The exhibition will survey the notion of the American Road. The road is an iconic theme that runs in some of the best and well known American photographers work such as Stephen Shore, Ed Ruscha, Alec Soth and many others . Photographers have traveled these vast landscapes and across thousands of miles to document this country and all that surrounds the road; the landscape, the gas stations, the motels, the diners and everything that comes by its side and its lifestyle.

The Way-Back Music Machine Radio Hour Ep 89

Wednesdays 8pm EST bombshellradio.com The Way-Back Music Machine Radio Hour Ep. 88 It is hard to believe that the Way-Back Music Machine is embarking on its 89th road trip, with Tony Stuart and Aaron Badgley, and yet here we are. This week, Tony and Aaron have a real mixed bag of goodies. Something for everyone, as they say. Starting on Sunday, Harry Nilsson is in the spotlight. He takes a song written by Peter Ham and Tom Evans (of Badfinger) and goes to number one. And he does the vocal in one take! On Monday, we celebrate Kurt Cobain's birthday and also salute a Flock of Finches. No, not A Flock Of Seagulls, but finches. And on Tuesday we celebrate the birth of Eunice Wayman (better known as Nina Simone) and drop into Pink Floyd's recording session for their debut album. On Wednesday, we see The Eagles make a wise decision in deciding on a song being released as a single. And on Thursday, we look at Woody Guthrie and one of his iconic songs. He may not be rock and roll but he certainly influenced a number of rock and rollers. And we also salute David Sylvian. Friday.Jimi Hendrix plays his last show in the U.K. at the legendary Royal Albert Hall. Saturday features two stories about two Beatles. It is George's Birthday and Paul debuts his band Wings with a rather controversial single. But, we know there are eight days a week. And as a bonus we look at a classic Elvis double A side that makes number one. All that plus a little chart talk, great music and two friends talking about music. Read the full article

Famous Muses & Groupies in Rock Music Pt. 19
GROUPIE: Grace Slick (born Grace Barnett Wing)
It feels wrong labeling someone as influential and iconic in rock music as Grace Slick a groupie, but.…it’s kind of true, lol. I don’t think she would even really argue it what with how blunt she’s always been about her sex life. Grace was born on October 30th, 1939 in Chicago, IL to Ivan and Virginia Wing. Grace and her younger brother Chris grew up in Chicago and Los Angeles before the family settled in San Francisco when Grace was in middle school for Ivan’s investment banking career. She graduated high school in Palo Alto, attended Finch College in New York City her Freshman year of college, then transferred to the University of Miami, FL her Sophomore year before dropping out completely. From 1959-62, Grace was a professional model for the department chain I. Magnin. Around this time in 1961, Grace met and began seeing her future first husband, Jerry Slick, a sometime cinematographer and short film director. In 1965, Grace and Jerry formed their own rock band, the Great Society, inspired by the growing psychedelic scene in the bay area. The group included Grace as lead vocalist, Jerry on drums and Jerry’s brother Darby on guitar. Despite being the band’s frontwoman, Grace originally viewed her involvement in rock music as a lark.
A year later in 1966, fellow NorCal band Jefferson Airplane announced they were in need of a new female singer. Supposedly it was Airplane bassist Jack Casady who convinced Grace to crossover to their act. For the next two decades, Grace filled a fulltime gig as one of the leaders and songwriters of JA; the spinoff band Jefferson Starship that brokethrough in 1974, to eventually becoming just Starship in 1985. In 1971, Grace and then boyfriend/bandmate Paul Kantner recorded the album ‘Sunfighter,’ dedicated to their newborn daughter China. She also released four solo albums during the 1970s-‘80s. Her trademark tracks include ‘Somebody to Love,’ ‘White Rabbit’ and ‘Lather’ of Jefferson Airplane; ‘Silver Spoon,’ ‘China’ and the title track from ‘Sunfighter;’ and ‘Ride the Tiger,’ ‘Love Too Good’ and ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now’ of Starship.
Back in the 1960s, Grace was one of the most rebellious celebrities in the entertainment biz. Whether it was stunts like dropping the first ever F-bomb on national TV during a 1969 musical performance on Dick Cavett’s show; or getting kicked out of the White House with anarchist Abbie Hoffman for attempting to spike President Nixon’s tea with LSD. If there was one more thing as famous as Grace’s trippy songs, cool fashion sense, radical political statements and experimental drug use, it’s her unapologetically brazen sexcapades. By the time Grace joined JA, her marriage to Jerry was already winding down, though their divorced wouldn’t be finalized until 1971. In her 1998 memoir Somebody to Love, Grace claims she’s slept with every male member of the Airplane except co-vocalist Marty Balin. Apparently the only reason Marty passed on the chance was because he thought the intimacy might ruin the on stage chemistry between them (and because he was always jealous of the female bandmates’ popularity). Marty’s also the only member she hasn’t stayed in touch with since the groups disbanded. Jack Casady would be the first fling in late ‘66, because she thought bass playing was sexy, lol. Then followed drummer Spencer Dryden, who would be her boyfriend from 1967-68. The song ‘Lather’ from the 1968 JA album ‘Crown of Creation’ was written by Grace for Spencer on his 30th birthday.
Her most serious relationship was with JA rhythm guitarist and songwriter Paul Kantner from 1968 to 1975. But in between Spencer and Paul would also be a very brief, but memorable encounter between Grace and Doors frontman Jim Morrison in September of ‘68. That autumn, Jefferson Airplane and the Doors were co-touring Europe and one night in Jim’s hotel room things got a little crazy. Grace doesn’t really remember all the details because they were wasted the whole time, but allegedly their tryst included Quaaludes, strawberries and some intense staring while naked in bed. She’s described him in interviews as ‘well-built,’ ‘larger than average,’ and ‘gorgeous, but so screwed up.’ In the morning, Grace gave Jim the typical ‘call me’ line, but she never heard from him after the tour (probably because he was living with girlfriend Pamela Courson back home). “I liked Jim a lot. Most women did.”
There also seems to be some overlap with her hook up with JA lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and courtship of Paul. By late ’69, Paul and Grace were living together, and on January 25th, 1971, their daughter China was born. Grace infamously trolled the hospital nurse aiding her birth when she jokingly said she wanted to name her infant ‘God with a lowercase ‘g’.’ The track ‘China’ on ‘Sunfighter’ is an obvious homage to the new baby. That same year, Grace suffered a concussion when she crashed her car on Golden Gate Bridge while racing with Jorma. This then became the basis of the song ‘Never Argue with a German If You’re Tired’ on the 1971 JA album ‘Bark.’ But now back to Paul and Grace. Unfortunately even with the addition of a family, their relationship would be very stormy. With Airplane being shook up like everyone else over the violence that occurred at the 1969 Altamont Music Festival, the band slowly started drifting apart. In 1970, Paul and Grace focused on composing their own LP together and then forming J. Starship with Marty, while Jorma and Jack went off to pen their own band Hot Tuna. Though Starship actually ended up being even more commercially successful than Airplane, Grace’s substance abuse would be at its worst throughout the ‘70s. The acid and ‘ludes were gone, but now the new band was into coke and Grace succumbed to alcoholism. Grace’s already erratic behavior would get even sloppier and include two arrests for what she calls ‘talking under the influence.’ Both involved her talking back to a police officer while drunk, and during one of the incidents there was also a complaint of her and Paul arguing too loud in their house.
Grace eventually entered rehab twice, first in 1979 and then again in 1990, before officially gaining sobriety. After she and Paul ended their relationship, Grace married JS’ lighting man Skip Johnson from 1976-1994. She now considers herself very lucky that addiction didn’t kill her like it did to Jim and the rest of the 27 club. But ever the contrarian, she also said in a 2017 Classic Rock magazine retrospective that the US made a mistake banning Quaaludes, lol. As for all her hookups? “The only thing I regret is not including Jimi Hendrix and Peter O’Toole.”

Hidden Toronto: a growing list of the city’s best-kept secrets
RUPTUREDS OF CREATIVITY MAKE A CITY WORTH RESIDING IN
" I reside in Toronto," starts the commentary of the Oscar-winning brief Ryan, "a city in Canada where I see way a lot of shades of grey for my own good health."
It can be tough to reside in a place whose very appearances are a continuous reminder of our failure to do much better. Where a lot of streetscapes are specified by indifferent condos as well as the same handful of financial institutions and also pharmacies at their bases. Where cuts to transit make rush hour an increasingly derogatory experience yet also theoretical troubles to drivers are considered undesirable. Where we're told by our politicians that good points are past us which the "TORONTO" check in Nathan Phillips Square is unworthy of even the moderate funds required to keep it around for another year.
Where public investment is dealt with as a benefit and not a right, to be administered on the basis of political efficiency rather than need.
Thankfully, there are the buttons.
In each of the cellar restrooms at Otto's Berlin Döner in Kensington Market is a switch on the wall. Oversized and also unmissable but entirely unmarked, there is no demand to press them, yet you can. And also in the midst of the sweltering heat of August or the unlimited winter season of March, you will certainly be delighted.
Easter eggs like these are what make the city-- any type of city-- worth living in. They are the bursts of creativity or charm, oddness or fancifulness, that make it possible to get through the days during the greyer months when doing so would otherwise be an obstacle. Occasionally they are destinations, but often they are unforeseen. They are physical signs that a person, in a remote or very recent history, made the effort to care, to add something to the city material that would intangibly enhance the experience of it.
The Peter Frying pan statuary in Glenn Gould Park, as an example, is not special. It is one of 6 the same copies of Sir George Frampton's original in London's Kensington Gardens. It is not even the just one of its kind in Canada.
Yet with its 9 fairies, seven computer mice, 5 bunnies, 3 birds and one each of a snail, squirrel, salamander and frog-- all circling Peter as well as Wendy-- it brings a sprinkle of childish goal to the northwest corner of Opportunity and St. Clair.
There is no naturally sensible reason it should exist the park's pianist namesake had not been also born when it was installed. That it was donated by something called the College Heights' Association "to the spirit of children at play" is a peculiarity of background, and that it lingers to the present is a strange present.
The value of a city is gauged, partly, by its capability to provide the unforeseen and to emerge as an area where such shocks are welcomed.
It has to do with the city as source of nourishment as well as stimulation-- the city as play area, the city as theme park, the city as location that encourages exploration. The city as a home that makes you grateful to receive its prizes.
In the late 2000s, I belonged to the Toronto Psychogeography Society, which is a fancy means of stating I took place regular night strolls normally arranged by Spacing editor Shawn Micallef. The trips typically came under two categories: venturing with parts of the city that we 'd never ever or else experience walking, or wandering through locations we thought about familiar but that still had keys to reveal.
There was likewise a third sort of walk: ones that travelled via areas well known to simply one of us. At that time, I was dealing with my family at Yonge and York Mills, a location I frowned at for its distinct lack of points. On the second coldest evening of the wintertime, the group came up to my location, and we headed off via the vacant Don Valley Golf links.
Held in the air by looming concrete assistances, the 401 crosses the gorge there using a substantial bridge that rises over the greens. We climbed up the high hillside at the west side of the bridge up until we discovered ourselves adjacent to the highway, at the protected tip of a fork in the roadway.
Cars and trucks zoomed past on both sides.
I had known about the bridge and also the remarkable industrial-ruin feeling of its base. I didn't know you might securely come eye to eye with the freeway, staring down traffic on one of the busiest paths on the planet. I had never done anything like it in the past.
In that moment, Toronto in February was okay. -- Jonathan Goldsbie

She meant that figuratively, of course, explaining the "lengthy trip from downtown Toronto" as well as other downsides (e.g., scarce parking) of its location alongside the DVP north of Eglinton. Certainly, the 6.8-hectare park ignores Don Mills from a lofty perch, and as a social location it aspires to even higher objectives-- namely, "to urge intercultural discussion and also exchange ... in a time when the globe of Islam and the Western globe requirement to collaborate a lot more properly at constructing good understanding." Made of fibreglass, chicken cord as well as plywood, the large grass ornament stops individuals in their tracks. 2. TRINITY SQUARE MAZE, BEHIND THE EATON CENTRE.
This little-known oasis of calm in what may be Toronto's the very least valued public square sits atop the hidden course of Taddle Creek as well as is come close to by means of Tibetan arcs. On its site behind the 361 College courthouse, where the city's most significant criminal situations are listened to, the work is a company and specific tip of the perfect of justice shared in Area 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms: "Every person is equivalent prior to and also under the law and also can the equal security and equal benefit of the regulation without discrimination.".

There's so much even more to the Path! Check it out.
9. SQUIRREL CULT STATUARY, JOEL WEEKS PARK, 10 THOMPSON.
Credit scores to the National Article for first mentioning that the quartet of bronze squirrels raised on hind legs prior to a huge acorn at the south end of this brand-new Waterfront park resembles absolutely nothing so much as a cult. When the paper asked artist Mary Anne Barkhouse why the squirrels would certainly genuflect before the nut, she simply responded to, "Why wouldn't they?" Appointed by the city, the squirrel sect is one aspect of a triptych called Echo that Aboriginal sculptors Barkhouse and also Michael Belmore created for the park. (The other items are a somewhat even more traditional beaver as well as fox.) On a current go to, a person had actually left a partially consumed bagel as an offering.

The former Imperial Oil head office is currently the Imperial Plaza condo, with an LCBO and also Market by Longo's at street level. Flanked by York Wilson's substantial The Story Of Oil murals, they're the most stunning liquor and supermarket in the city. Both adoringly brought back and iced up in time, the murals stand for that type of postwar optimism where points that became dreadful for the earth were thought to signify the most effective wish for humanity. The vestiges of public grandiosity continue to be evident in the huge clock deals with constructed right into the shiny marble wall surfaces at opposite ends of the first stage, as well as a third springing from a matrix of golden-hued tiles in the centre.
13. BRAND-NEW! CIRCLE OF TREES, WOODBINE PARK.
Artist Laurie McGugan's 2000 Centuries Task at Woodbine Park, Circle of Trees, really did not go completely as planned. The item includes 7 maple trees in a circle, one of them cast in bronze (in 4 components, after that bonded together as one). As the trees grew, the bronze item would certainly remain the exact same, showing time through nature. "Although planted with optimum treatment, the living trees did not flourish as anticipated after about five years, however were battling to endure," McGugan says. "With some attention, by the Parks Division and the Conservator of Public Art, to the soil around the trees, they seem to have actually recoiled. The intended layout might still unravel over time.".
14. NEW! THE VESSEL, TADDLE CREEK PARK, 40 BEDFORD.
Standing among concentric rings of blocks that appear to ripple external like water, Ilan Sandler's The Vessel cuts a distinctive profile at the edge of Bedford and Lowther. Mounted in 2011 as part of a park restoration funded by Area 37 money from the nearby One Bedford growth, the sculpture is planned to stimulate the long-buried Taddle Creek that went across the midtown core through the late 1800s. Its four kilometres' well worth of stainless steel rods would certainly, in theory, stretch along the previous river's course to Lake Ontario if unfurled. As well as in warmer weather condition, it acts as an avant-garde public fountain, with water dripping from the rim down along its wiry surface area to a subterranean tank that waters the park.
15. NEW! GRAFFITI STREET, SOUTH OF QUEEN FROM SPADINA TO PORTLAND.
The swing on chains behind YYZ Gallery-- the work of local musician Corwyn Lund, part of a group show on guerrilla jobs-- is gone. But Graffiti Alley, aka Thrill Lane, is still one of the coolest area to decipher the best of Toronto road art.

Halloween 2017 movie marathon: The Cat and the Canary (dir. Paul Leni, 1927)

“You must have been lonely these twenty years, Mammy Pleasant.”
“I don’t need the living ones.”
Driven to near-madness and physical decline by his greedy relatives, eccentric millionaire Cyrus West dies in his gothic mansion—however, he orders that his will not be read for another twenty years. Two decades come and go, and a quirky collection of West’s living relatives gather at the mansion to find out who gets the money. The lucky heir is the sweet-natured Annabelle West (Laura La Plante), but before she can claim her inheritance, she must be examined by a doctor who will certify whether or not she is sane. If so, she gets the money, family diamonds, and Cyrus’s creepy but big mansion. If not, she gets an extended stay at an asylum and the money goes to a mysterious runner-up heir, whose identity is sealed away in another envelope. Annabelle is decidedly the sanest of the lot of her bizarre relations, which include her nerdy and stammering cousin Paul (Creighton Hale), snobby and suspicious Aunt Susan (Flora Finch), (Forrest Stanley), the suave but mysterious Doctor (Arthur Edmund Carewe), and the chic but catty (Gertrude Astor), but as the night wears on, her nerves are subjected to unexplained disappearances, murders, and being stalked through the night by what could either be a ghost or an escaped madman from the local mental hospital. Whether the origins of these occurrences are supernatural or crime-related, it becomes clear someone wants to drive Annabelle insane and take her fortune, but who could it be?
Horror didn’t become a cinematic staple in the United States until the enormous success of Tod Browning’s Dracula in 1931; however, there were a few key Hollywood films during the silent era which paved the way for the terrors to come. The Phantom of the Opera is the most celebrated of them as it teems with suspense and gothic set design-- and that’s not mentioning Lon Chaney’s iconic monster make-up which left patrons screaming in the aisles. The Cat and the Canary is the second-most influential pre-Dracula American horror picture. While not as embedded in the popular culture as Phantom, it was one of the biggest hits of its day and remains a favorite of silent film aficionados. The cast sports a host of character actors familiar to lovers of 1910s and 1920s Hollywood cinema, and the visuals—oh Lord, the visuals are the true star, pure gothic expressionism mixed with innovative camerawork that should strike down the idea that all movies were “filmed stage plays” before Citizen Kane.

As you can likely see from the plot summary above, the storyline of The Cat and the Canary will likely appear familiar, even creaky, to contemporary viewers. It’s a classic old dark house mystery, with a bevy of strange characters trapped in a menacing setting, freaking out as things go bump in the night. This film and its 1922 stage play source material are often classified as dark comedy, as there is quite a bit of comic relief throughout due to how weird the characters are and how they react to the mayhem around them. However, the horror elements are strong enough to make this more than your standard drawing room murder-mystery: director Paul Leni and cinematographer Gilbert Warrenton create an uneasy atmosphere from the first scenes where we learn about the death of Cyrus West, how he was driven to his grave by his cruel, avarice-ridden relatives. In a symbolic sequence, we see Cyrus in his pajamas dwarfed by large, double-exposed images of cats baring their fangs and swiping at him with large, clawed paws. It sounds corny when I describe it, but the effect it has when you actually watch it is chilling and effective.
After this prologue, we’re treated to a first-person POV tracking shot through the gloomy corridors of the mansion, curtains flapping about in the wind as the camera glides about in the ghostliest manner before we arrive at the safe where the will lies hidden. As you watch this movie, the one motif which resonates throughout is the image of hands. Hands grasping at jewelry or throats, hands tentatively outstretched, hands breaking through locks and windows—even the paws of the giant, expressionistic cats are part of this visual thread. These images help establish the menace of the situation as well as emphasize the greed that motivates so many of these characters. It’s a little bit of a shame that the plot is so basic in comparison to the elaborate cinematography and expressionistic visual symbolism. It isn’t a bad story by any means and there are several suspenseful moments to be found, one just wishes for a bit more meat or a more interesting protagonist to follow.

Even if the visuals and atmosphere are what make the movie for the most part, The Cat and the Canary is nevertheless a fun and spooky romp, featuring good comic performances from its cast. Laura La Plante was Universal’s most popular female star throughout most of the 1920s, though she is mostly forgotten today; this film remains her most remembered role, if only because the image of the clawed hands grasping at her throat as she sleeps is so iconic. As Annabelle, she isn’t given too much to do other than be bewildered and frightened, though her cool blonde style gives her the feel of a Hitchcock heroine in some scenes. Her thin characterization likely stems from the fact that Annabelle is the de facto everywoman character, the one spot of normalcy among these eccentrics. Even so, one wishes she was allowed to be at least a little bit more unique—though it would be hard to compete with the other actors in this movie. If you’re a silent movie nerd like me, then this movie is a practical who’s-who when it comes to character actors. Creighton Hale, a heart-throb of the 1910s who played Prince Charming in the 1916 Snow White which inspired a fifteen-year-old Walt Disney, plays the nerdy love interest Paul. George Siegmann, most known for his villain parts, is a creepy asylum employee who hopes to get someone in a straightjacket before the night is up. Annabelle’s fashionable flapper cousin Cecily is played by Hal Roach regular Gertrude Astor. My choice for best performance goes to Martha Mattox as the dour housemaid, ironically called “Mammy Pleasant” by the other characters. The only inhabitant of the manor for the past twenty years, she is enamored by her late master and spends much of the time almost savoring the discomfort of the frightened guests. The characters are all broad types rather than fully fleshed out beings, but such an approach fits the material.
The Cat and the Canary was not only a big box office hit, but also a huge influence for later filmmakers, most famously James Whale. Whale’s 1932 horror-comedy The Old Dark House replicates the look of this movie down to the eerie image of curtains billowing in a shadowy hallway. Later on, even Jean Cocteau seems to have mined Leni’s film for visual inspiration in his moody 1946 adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. Just watch that scene where Belle levitates down a corridor with billowing curtains and tell me you don’t get flashbacks to The Cat and the Canary! However, it is Whale’s The Old Dark House to which this film is often compared. To watch the two of them back-to-back could be an interesting experience: the humor in Whale’s film is much quirkier, the inhabitants of the eponymous house far more sinister, and the guests possess more depth on the whole, from Charles Laughton’s bitter widower to Gloria Stuart’s vain yet disillusioned socialite. Still, without Leni’s film, that movie might not be the masterpiece of horror-comedy we know and love now. Whale took the lessons he learned from Leni and pushed them further into weird territory. Yet even so, the camera movements and overlapping imagery in this film are sophisticated, in their own way superior to the later movie. Dammit, both are great—let’s leave it at that!
While the general concept may be dated, The Cat and the Canary is still an impressive film. It’s a lot of fun and the granddaddy of horror-comedy classics to follow, from The Old Dark House to the Evil Dead films. If you wonder why people thought sound films were a fad in the late 1920s, then the dazzling cinematography of even genre pictures like this should give you a good idea as to why.
