Eleanor attended the small and private funeral for her father with her aunt Stella. It was a terribly sad affair - all of her aunts and uncle were there, shocked that their brother had passed so suddenly. Though news had spread far and wide through the media of his death, the family had wanted to keep his farewell to themselves.

The funeral meant that Eleanor would see her mother and twin sister for the first time since she had run away from home. She had anticipated it might be awaked, to see them in these circumstances, but she was so sad about her fathers passing that she had hoped they would perhaps reconcile in grief. It made her hurt and sad, though, when her grieving mother walked straight past her and refused to speak with her.

Daphne however was not so cold. She approached Eleanor and apologised for their mothers behaviour.

‘She is in quite a state, really. I don’t want you to feel bad, but I think she has convinced herself that your leaving caused Daddy too much stress and impacted his health. Don’t worry though, I know that’s not true. We all saw how he liked to live.’

Eleanor was glad to see and speak with her sister again. She told her that she and Gary had secretly married, and that they were expecting a baby. Daphne smiled at her and congratulated them.

‘I know we haven’t always been the same, Eleanor, but I do miss you being here. Could we perhaps write to each other, keep each other updated on our lives? I don’t want you to be gone for good.’

Eleanor liked that idea very much, and the sisters were finally able to reconcile their differences at their fathers graveside.

Lucy Lipiner is no stranger to antisemitism. A 90-year-old Holocaust survivor, she was forced to live through one of the worst atrocities to ever take place in human history. Yet her lived experience still hasn’t prevented the torrent of antisemitic abuse that she, and all Jewish people, currently are experiencing on social media – in particular on Elon Musk’s “X” (formerly known as Twitter). This week was no exception.

“I was appalled at the rise in antisemitism that seemed more blatant – less hidden than in the past and more like what we had seen before the war in Europe. … I felt, as a survivor, compelled to speak up,” she told Ynet.

And she has definitely spoken up. Lipiner regularly uses social media to call out Holocaust denial and revisionism, using her own personal story from Nazi-occupied Poland, as well as her own collection of family photos from the Holocaust, to share the truth.

From taking on former UFC fighter Jake Shields for spreading antisemitic conspiracies to calling out anti-feminist right-wing pundit Pearl Davis for her antisemitic song, to exposing the antisemitism in UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese’s tweets, Lipiner is extremely active in the conversation on the X platform.

Lipiner considers anti-Zionism a form of antisemitism.

“I also thought the rise of BDS was simply a veiled form of antisemitism in the guise of anti-Zionism, which increasingly felt like nothing less than today’s version of age-old hatred of Jews,” she said.

This week, when she published a post on X about the anniversary of the lynching of Leo Frank, she was met with a massive onslaught of white supremacist antisemitism in response. The result was a community note – a fact-checking tool meant to add context to tweets - which incorrectly stated that Leo Frank, the victim of the lynching, murdered and raped a 13-year-old girl. In fact, Frank was wrongly convicted for the rape and murder of Mary Phagan, in a case that is widely believed to be permeated with blatant antisemitism akin to the Dreyfus affair.

“I tweeted about the 108th anniversary of the lynching of an innocent Jewish man Leo Frank who was accused of murder amidst a horrifically antisemitic community environment. His lynchers were never brought to Justice. A community note says it all: antisemitism is still alive and kicking today,” she said.

Beyond the community note, the responses to her tweet were also antisemitic. One comment read: “Gee it’s almost like they were kicked out of 109 countries for a reason…” Another: “You don't have to be in colonized Palestine to defend the indefensible, you simply have to be a zionist.”

While hundreds pushed back and eventually the X platform removed the community note, the evidence of the antisemitic mob remains. Lipiner said that she routinely receives ugly antisemitic threats and messages in her private messages on social media as well, including users mocking her with Holocaust jokes about gas chambers.

“Hate-filled trolls seem to enjoy engaging with me. Mostly they deny the Holocaust ever happened or diminish it, compare it to other events- or a favorite of trolls is to co-opt the term Nazi, using it to describe Israel and its right to defend itself against terror,” she said.

In another message, Lipiner shared with Ynet, an X user wrote to tell her that she is “not a real Jew” and that “the Torah says the Jews were and are a black race of people. You're not black so stop spreading lies to the public. …We are sick and tired of you stealing our history.” Not the real Jews is a phrase most commonly used by Black supremacists – including Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam and the Black Hebrews movement - claiming Black people, and not Jews, are the true chosen people of God.

Yet in the face of such vile conversation, Lipiner isn’t backing down; instead, she’s doubling down.

“The trolls honestly don’t bother me. I’ve dealt with so much worse, and I guess I must be relevant,” she joked. But she is concerned about the level of vitriol on social media, in particular X.

RED ROSES  — For the ancient Romans, the rose signified beauty and was associated with goddesses, most famously; Venus and Aphrodite known as the goddesses of love, beauty, and desire. It was also seen as evocative of death and rebirth and often planted on graves. Ancient Romans were also known for placing a rose on the door to a room where confidential matters were being discussed, a custom thought to have derived from the Latin expression “sub rosa” translating as “under the rose” and referring to being told something in confidence.

ANEMONE  —   The story goes that Adonis, huge crush of goddesses everywhere, was killed by a wild boar while hunting. In keeping with the Greek tradition of blaming flowers in mythology on the deaths of hotties, the anemone is said to have sprung up where Adonis’ blood had spilled. Other versions of the story say the anemone was a white flower already in bloom, but turned red from Adonis’ blood.

ROSE QUARTZ —   The ancient civilizations of Rome and Assyria were the first to use this crystal as a bead in rose quartz jewelry. Its use in talismans, however, carried more symbolic weight. To early Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations, rose quartz meaning within a talisman was that of ownership. Rose quartz talisman were used to signify that a deal had been reached. The Egyptians also believe that the stone could prevent wrinkles and the effects of aging. Greek and Roman myths were the first to attach the symbol of love to the rose quartz meaning. According to the myth, Cupid, the Roman god of desire, or Eros, the Greek god of love, bestowed the gift of love to humans in the form of a rose quartz. Another rose quartz myth tells of the stone receiving its color from the blood Aphrodite spilt in trying to save her dying lover Adonis. Both of the lovers bled over the stone, and its lasting stain is meant to represent eternal love. Later in Ancient Native American cultures, the rose quartz stone meaning was the same. They believed that this love stone could be used in amulets to resolve anger and disappointments, and bring love into the newly harmonized emotions.

AMETHYST —  Amethyst is a stone of spiritual protection and purification, cleansing one’s energy field of negative influences and attachments, and creating a resonant shield of spiritual Light around the body. One day the girls received a horrible phone call from their father. The news had just come through the family that their cousin Buddy had been drafted to the war overseas.

Pearl was devastated that her only child was being taken from her, but her sister Violet was there with her to make sure she was alright as she bid him farewell. They would not hear from Buddy for a long time and had to pray that he would return home safely.

The sad news brought the Dreyfus girls together, despite their differences, to comfort one another in the shock and despair that the cruelty of the world had finally touched their own family.

Weekend Update: August 9

Happy Friday! Hope everyone had a great week. This week was slow and then all of a sudden it's Friday. Isn't it so strange when that happens??

What I Bought:

-I didn't buy this but thought it would be good to share here! My new pearl clutch for the wedding (pictured above!) that Beth, the shop owner, graciously gifted me!! I LOVE it and think it's even better in person. UGH I am so excited to wear it. I also asked about a discount code to share with you guys and she was able to offer 10% off her entire etsy shop! Use the code KRISTA10! PS she has my beaded leaf earrings from my shower in stock!! -These disposable cameras for the wedding -Embossed stationery for our wedding notes day of! NYC Life: Lots of workouts this week. I started with a new trainer (since my other one left the gym) and it has been awesome. She TOTALLY kicks my butt and I leave feeling sorer than ever with her. It's like night a day! We're also starting to cut back on some food items as we prepare for the wedding. We're testing to see what is causing my skin/bloating/etc by trying an eilimnation process. This week is grain and next week will be dairy. I also have a dress fitting today so hoping that all goes well! Favorite Finds: -BeautyBlender on sale! -A pink, pearl, chain trim dress??? YES PLEASE -I love my white Sofia jeans so I'm thinking about trying these out as well! -A great white midi dress for a bride to be -An affordable moto jacket -Cute (and under $50) booties for fall Weekend Plans: Heading up to Westchester for the weekend to run more wedding errands as we get closer to the big day (my heart stops every time I think about it!). Nothing much out of the ordinary this weekend outside a family party. One thing I'm looking forward to is grocery shopping. I seem to have totally run out of food this week so I feel like a trip to Costco/Sams Club is in need. A Must Watch: Julia Louis-Dreyfus sat down with Vanity Fair and broke down her whole career. I love her so it was really interesting to listen and go through all her past roles. I had NO idea she was on SNL! Song of the Week: More like a playlist of the week! After a few requests, I decided to make a summer playlist on Spotify with ALL the songs I've been listening to as of late. Feel free to give it a follow! Lots of Chance the Rapper so you've been warned.  Most Popular Item of the Week: These single letter stud earrings! They're 2 for $10 so you basically need them. They are so easy and simple to wear! A close second was this heated eyelash curler.
