Pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus)
Size: Up to 3.4m (11ft)
Range & Habitat: Pelagic thresher sharks can be found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, usually in open water.
Other: Thresher sharks are identifiable by their unique tails which typically make up half the shark’s length and their round heads with big eyes. Thresher sharks are strong, fast sharks. They use their lengthy tails to herd schools of fish, then whip them so they’re stunned. Then the shark can swim through, snapping up as many as it likes.

ok so like many people on here i'm very autistic abt fish (and other animals) so i'm gonna just start posting my notes app infodumps on the fish autism website
Tumblr media
Definitely one of the goofiest sharks out there, i've gone on record as claiming the pelagic thresher (Alopias pelagicus) as my favorite shark. Threshers are known for their extremely long tail, which is used to help catch prey. The thresher uses its tail like a whip to stun groups of small fish. Points for creativity!
The pelagic thresher can be identified by dark patches of skin around the base of its fins and smaller eyes than its relatives. Perosnally, I would describe the species as looking like its mom just left it in line at the cash register to go grab something she forgot. Delightful lil guys!

Animal of the Day!
Pelagic Thresher (Alopias pelagicus)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Endangered
Habitat- Pacific Ocean; Indian Ocean
Size (Weight/Length)- 70 kg; 3 meters
Diet- Fish; Squid
Cool Facts- Known for their elongated caudal fins, pelagic threshers are a relatively small species of shark. Using their long tail as a whip, they slash through schools of fish. Their tail stuns fish and allows the thresher to calmly eat them without having to engage in a tiring chase. Pelagic threshers, true to their name, rarely come to shore and live the majority of their lives in the open ocean. There has never been an attack on a human by a pelagic thresher due to their small mouths and teeth. However, pelagic threshers are overfished for shark fin soup and traditional medicines which is slowly pushing them to the brink of extinction.
Rating- 12/10 (What can I say, I have a soft spot for sharks.)

Okay I finally got everything decided for the merfolk Straw Hats! I’ll be tagging everything related to this as ‘merfolk au’.
Luffy is a bull shark. Hear me out on this one. This shark is a voracious eater and an extremely strong predator. They’re also capable of surviving in freshwater for surprisingly long periods of time, which I think compliments Luffy’s adventurous nature. They also sometimes fight crocodiles, which I just happened to find funny.
For Zoro, I think the green moray eel would be fitting. I know swordfish is the obvious choice, but I wanted to do something different. These fish are aggressive and vicious fighters. Also, they don’t clean themselves and instead rely on other fish to clean them, which is very Zoro like in my humble opinion.
Nami is a flame angelfish. A gorgeous fish that is known for having a temper. They’re also expensive in the fishkeeping hobby, which is very on brand for Nami.
Usopp is an indo-pacific sailfish. Between them being one of the fastest fish in the ocean and their long nose, it’s a perfect fit.
Sanji is a pelagic thresher shark, a fierce fighter that uses its tail as its main weapon. They’re also very athletic, capable of swimming at high speeds and breeching out of the water.
Chopper is a reindeer that ate the mer-mer fruit and became a blue spotted pufferfish merman. I chose this one because the defense mechanism fits his scaredy cat personality, and also because this fish doesn’t get along with members of its own species very well.
Robin is a mimic octopus. They can change colors, as well as alter the length and texture of their legs, which I think works well with her devil fruit ability. They’re also masters at hiding which suits her well.
Franky is a peacock mantis shrimp. These guys are very intelligent, and their strong armor and unique attacks suit Franky’s cyborg status nicely. Their colorful appearance and blue head is also fitting to such a colorful and boisterous character.

long time listener first time caller, which shark would you say has the best understanding of greek philosophy?
Hello long time listener!
honestly i know you were kidding but i am now genuinely interested. I have a few sharks that could be most likely to understand greek philosophy (from least to most likely)
3. Angel Shark
Tumblr media
Angelsharks are a group of sharks that are known for their flattened shape (almost like a ray)! They eat crustaceans, fish, and molluscs in an "asassin" style - burying in the sand and waiting for prey to walk by to snap them up!
Why i think they'd know greek philosophy: they are the most commonly sighted shark on the Mediterranean (and therefore greek) coastline, living in shallow areas. This means that it's possible for them to hear people on the coastline talking about greek philosophy!
2. Thresher Shark
Tumblr media
Thresher sharks are a group of species in the mackrel shark family, known for their long whip-like tails. They use them for hunting schools of fish, where they will use their caudal fin to hit the fish and knock them out! Additionally, a fun fact about them is that they can regulate their internal body temperature! I think their cool hunting method shows that they are more complex than their goofy expression suggests. I mean, just look at their face...
Besides their knowledge, thresher sharks have another reason why they are on this list: they have been written about by aristotle himself!!! He writes about the clever nature of the shark, for biting fishing lines they were attached to and protecting babies in their mouths. If they are smart and have met one of the greatest philosophers of all time, who's to say that they dont know a bit of his philosophy?
1. Shortfin Mako Shark
Tumblr media
The shortfin mako shark is a species of shark known for its incredibly high speeds when hunting - the fastest recorded speed being 46 miles per hour (although usually 30 miles per hour)!! Additionally, their bite force is something to be reckoned with, the highest recorded being ~13,000N !! Unlike the other sharks on my list, they are not inheritely from the Mediterranean, and instead are pelagic (ocean) sharks that migrate. They primarily hunt bony fish and cephlapods.
I think these sharks would be most likely to know greek philosophy as they have the largest brain-to-body ratio companies to other sharks. Additionally, they spend a lot of time on their own in open ocean, giving them time to think. It's possible that they could even make up their own philosophical beliefs!
So, thats it! I hope you had fun!! If any shark fans notice a mistaks I have made, please dont be afraid to send me a DM, comment, or reblog!!
This is 100% for fun, i genuinely dont believe any of these sharks actually would know greek philosophy. Im just silly (autistic) like that :3

any facts about thresher sharks? They look really neat!
Well:
The thresher sharks' most distinguishable feature, its whip-like tail, is mainly used for hunting. Also known as caudal fins, these tails measure half the length of their body and are used to stun and herd prey. With a flick of their tails, thresher sharks can create shock waves that immobilize schools of fish - their favourite dish - making them easier to catch.
Tumblr media
The thresher shark reigns as one of the fastest predators in the ocean, reaching impressive speeds of up to 22 miles per hour. Comparatively, great white sharks reach 15 mph, while nurse sharks cruise at a leisurely two mph. Their competitive edge comes from their extra-long trail and torpedo-shaped body, which helps them dart through the water
Tumblr media
While thresher sharks are primarily pelagic, they breed in coastal waters. Juvenile thresher sharks will stick to these shallower, safer waters until they reach maturity, after which they will migrate to the deeper open ocean. Threshers will spend most of their lives at around 550 metres, but have been recorded reaching depths of 1,500 metres, making them one of the ocean's deepest dwellers
One of the most spectacular behaviours of thresher sharks is their ability to breach the water's surface. They use their powerful tails to propel themselves out of the water, reaching heights of up to three metres. The reason behind this behaviour is still not entirely understood, but it's believed to be related to communication, parasite removal or just for fun

Facts of the Day: 🦈Big Eye Thresher Shark🦈
Tumblr media
Scientific Name: Alopias superciliosus
Length: They can grow up to 20 feet, largest on record was 32 feet long
Weight: Average is around 440 lbs, largest on record is 1250 lbs
Lifespan: 19 to 50 years
Reproduction: They are ovoviviparous and give birth to live young with around 2 pups per litter after a year of gestation.
Diet: small pelagic fish like anchovies, sardines, hake, mackerel, and squid
Habitat: Worldwide in tropical and temperate seas
Status: Vulnerable
Summary: Big Eye Thresher Sharks are very notable sharks, with their staple large eye and short snout making them appear shy. However, the most notable trait of this shark is their long, scythe-like tails. These tails can reach up to 10 feet long on large adults, and it evolved like that for a reason. Their tail isn’t just for looks, their tail is a key part of how they hunt. Due to their fast and agile abilities in water, they can whip their tail into prey stunning, and paralyzing the fish to make them easier to eat. While these sharks are not as fast as the Shortfin Mako Shark, they are still incredibly fast, reaching speeds of 30 mph and with the abilities to breach up to 10 feet out of the water. It’s believed that part of that speed is due to their long tails providing extra thrust but also because these sharks are actually warm blooded allowing them to more effectively use the strength of their muscles, specifically the long strip of red muscle that lines their flanks to aid with swimming.
