- Handing down the flame -
aka a redraw of something I think I drew last year? Maybe early this year??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image Description:
On a white paper-textured background, surrounded by bright flames curling upwards behind them, are the characters Leo Valdez and Charlie Beckendorf from the book series Percy Jackson.
Charlie is reaching upwards, light scars covering his arms, face, and neck in a faded Camp Half-Blood orange shirt with a green neckerchief. His mouth is slightly open, eyes looking up with a furrowed brow, as he holds a lit match in one hand, the other hand cupped around it to protect the flame.
Leo Valdez is above him, partially emerging from the fire in the background, with hands reached out above the match. He is wearing his signature white shirt, muted orange suspenders and tool belt. He is the one who has lit the match Charlie is holding and, with a sorrowful expression and downturned lips, he is aware of what that means.
The two characters never met in the storyline, Charlie sacrificing himself long before Leo even knew of his true parentage, but they share a common thread beyond their father. Fire. Both of their lives were forged in fire and, most likely, will both end that way. There are already scars on Leo's body, he is not far from a similar grizzly end that most Half-Bloods meet.
End of Description.]

they're filming season two, but i'm thinking about the potential adaption of the mount tam scene in season three. you know, the one where annabeth could apologize for pushing percy out of the way and falling off the cliff in his place, and how she knows that sounds terrible but they didn't have time for another plan and she didn't want to lose him that way. but percy just engulfs her in a hug because he's so relieved that she's safe now and everything else be damned. and annabeth doesn't understand why he's snickering to himself after that last statement, but she melts into the hug anyway because she missed him. and thalia and grover stand in the background happy for their friends on the outside but internally mortified, because their friends are definitely falling for each other but fate may not allow them to see it through.

some nico headcanons I have
Nico’s fighting style is mostly greek, but while on the run in the maze Nico learned to fight by raising the dead and having them teach him. Because of that it’s not uncommon for him to do something that surprises and terrifies everyone
ever since the Jar Incident Nico’s become a lot closer with the Ares kids
just like the Athena kids have arachnophobia all Ares kids have some degree of claustrophobia which can either kina suck or “the bunk beds are going to kill me if I have to sleep on them”
Nico grew out of the Ghost King nickname and he thinks it’s cringe but it’s been so long that everyone calls him it. It makes him think of Minos and the worst time in his life when he was living on the streets and so so angry and full of grief and hate.
He thanks the gods every day that Minos found him instead of Luke during that time because he knows, he knows that if Luke had offered him revenge against Percy back then he’d have taken it in a heartbeat. He’d have taken it because the gods needed to pay for letting his sister die.
Along those lines, Nico likes McDonalds because he had to like it. An ten/eleven year old can’t get much money his only options for food was finding change to get a happy meal or asking adults for money for food and praying they’d take pity on him
Nico collects sisters like mythomagic cards. Fuck with him and he’s the least of your worried when you have Annabeth, Piper, Hazel, Rayna, Clarisse and just about every girl in Camp Half Blood and Camp Jupiter standing behind him ready to fuck up your entire life.
Nico can always see Thanatos, sometimes he stares at nothing but he’s having a staring contest with Thanatos. He does this a lot when Will’s trying to save a camper’s life. It works far too well. No one really minds, if anything it’s funny because Thanatos loses nearly every time, even when he doesn’t it’s usually enough of a distraction that Will’s stabilized the camper and Thanatos isn’t needed

guys, can - can we stop saying that percy jackson is an unreliable narrator who thinks he's an idiot? bc like. rereading the books.
he's doesn't??? think he's an idiot????
like sure he'll say things like "echidna.... isn't that a type of anteater?" but he doesn't think that he's himself an idiot for that.
let me quote you the book: "Go ahead, call me an idiot for walking into a strange lady’s shop like that just because I was hungry, but I do impulsive stuff sometimes."
HE doesn't think he's an idiot, but he does assume that YOU, THE READER, will think that. and that's true to his life experience, true to his school experience, true to anyone with a learning disability like his.

Me, trying to come up with a plot that accurately reflects the complexity and dynamics that are Annabeth's and her father's relationship with one another, as well as her feelings towards his new family, because while there is love there, how much necessarily? Not enough, to be assumed, because Annabeth ran away when she was seven and, with Luke's description of her in the books at the time he and Thalia found her, she wasn't in the best condition. Reading about how monsters tracking on to her scent and made her a target was the cause for many fights between her and parents, all of which was before she ran away and reads, personally to me, as a pair of adults blaming their young child, but these are also supposedly the same parents who, when discovering that she was in danger, actively wished for her well-being and, in her father's case, put themselves in harms way to go rescue her alongside her more than equipped friends, something, something, I could go on!

One thing that I don't like when live actions come out is how people can't differ the original content from the live action one. These are two medium and two different ways to tell a story.

my experience with percy jackson is kinda funny in hindsight because reading the first book for the first time i was like 'no way...thalia mentioned!!!!'
#the fool speaks#for clarity - i read the third??? book in elementary school before the others because i needed to get a higher reading level book from#another class and was very shy so they just asked if i wanted percy jackson and handed me the third??? book. it was. as you may have guesse#a tad confusing#and my memory of it is not great thalia was the only character i could really remember. i guess apart from The Percy Jackson.#so anytime they'd talk about the tree and thalia i was like I Know That Tree. I Know That Name#i always wanted to actually read the series from the beginning but never got around to it because a girl in church talked about#how she couldnt even read it anymore because of the gay character#now i am gay and finally reading again! its fun! i love being a nerd again!#(yes i cannot wait to meet nico for real LMAO)#Anyways i finished the first book! love how percy's adhd was portrayed! im going to pick up the second one from my library soonish#if it's in. but i have two books ahead of it an im torn on which book i should read#my heart wants to continue percy jackson but i probably should be getting started on one of these two...#one of them is probably mid at best though T_T#also i do want to watch the movies now that i have read the book so i can understand just why it was disliked. i cannot remember the#movie that well either. the first half of the book seemed pretty similar to what i remembered. the ending was definitely different#i assume thats the majority of the issue? but as i said. cannot remember it that well.

Someone should write a fantasy story wherein they combine all religions. An omnist bible, one might say. I'd try to do it, but I'm not good with anything besides ideas. My skills with dialogue are particularly atrocious. But I'd love a story like that. Finding a way to connect Greek mythology with Norse mythology, and Norse mythology with Christianity and so on. It'd certainly be interesting to see just how many you can connect to each other.
I'd also like it if someone translated the Bible into modern English and made it into a ya fantasy story like Percy Jackson. I don't want to offend people who like the bible (my mom was raised Catholic), but I also cannot understand old english. But if you were to make a version of the bible with 21st century language, written in the style of something like Percy Jackson or Harry Potter, then I'd probably be able to read it. This applies to other mythological and religious texts too. Give me a version of the Iliad written like Percy Jackson and I'd be happy to try reading it. But don't expect me to ever try the old english. I simply can't do it.
And I know that people who are really devout or who simply have objections due to their religious identity will probably be mad at me (I got a note like that when I made this post before), but I don't see what I'm doing wrong (which maybe means I'm tactless, but I already kind of knew that). And I'm not trying to be offensive: it's just that I really don't like monotheism and Old English. So I tried to find ways to make these things palatable for me, but I didn't want to seem offensive in any way.

What are these numbers, Rick?
Ok, so, I was going through the first Percy Jackson book trying to figure out how many campers would be in each cabin at the start of the series before the war. And just, the numbers that Percy gives the reader are weird? I guess?
Ok, so in “My Dinner Goes Up In Smoke“ Percy gives the reader of how many campers there are at camp with the following line:
“In all, there were maybe a hundred campers, a few dozen satyrs, and a dozen assorted wood nymphs and naiads.“
Ok, that’s a lot of demigods. There are 12 cabins so it makes sense that there would be a lot of demigods. But Cabin 1-3 are empty as is Cabin 8. But these numbers wouldn’t be so weird if Percy didn’t give us some numbers for the other cabins.
In the same chapter he gives the reader a rough idea of how many campers are in Cabin 11 and Cabin 6.
Cabin 11: "The whole cabin, about twenty of us, filed into the commons yard."
Cabin 6: "Annabeth sat at table six with a bunch of serious-looking athletic kids, all with her gray eyes and honey-blond hair."
Cabin 11 is an estimate so not concrete and a bunch when referring to people can mean 5 or more from results that the internet gave me when asking what a bunch refers to.
He also gives us more information in “We Capture a Flag“. We get concrete data points for Cabin 12, 9, and 5.
"From what I'd seen, Dionysus's kids were actually good athletes, but there were only two of them.”
"Hephaestus's kids weren't pretty, and there were only four of them, but they were big and burly from working in the metal shop all day."
That of course, left Ares's cabin: a dozen of the biggest ugliest, meanest kids on Long Island, or anywhere else on the planet."
Whereas the remaining cabins we aren’t given any concrete data to work with. He mentions Demeter and Aphrodite kids, but only that he doesn’t think that for Capture the Flag that they will be a threat. Nothing about how many kids each of them have. Only Apollo gets a mention about the size.
"Athena had made an alliance with Apollo and Hermes, the two biggest cabins."
So, here I am trying to figure out just how big these cabins are. So, if we take the estimate of a 100 campers as the number of campers at camp that is our starting number. Hermes and Apollo are the biggest so no one else can have 20 campers since that is how many Hermes has roughly.
So, when we take Cabin 11 out of the equation we have 80 campers left to distribute. Unknown how many are in Cabin 7 just that they have a lot. Taking out Cabin 12, 9, and 5 that takes 18 campers out of the equation leaving us with 62 campers to figure out which cabin they go in. As I said, a bunch seems to refer to 5 or more when referring to people. And when Percy was talking about a bunch in relation to Cabin 6 it was Annabeth and a bunch of her siblings. So, she wasn’t included in that initial number. So, I’m going to go with Cabin 6 having 6 kids. At least for the purposes of trying to figure out how many are left to divide between the three remaining cabins. So, take 6 campers out of 62 campers leaves us with 56 campers.
56 campers being divided between the three remaining cabins seems like a lot. Cabin 4 and 10 aren’t being mentioned have having a lot of campers, but they also aren’t really mentioned as having very few campers either. I’m not sure if I would say either of them would have a dozen campers either though. If I just assume that Apollo has about 20 campers then dividing the remaining 36 campers would get 18 campers in Cabin 4 and 10, which seems like that would be too many for Percy to dismiss their cabins no matter what their skill levels are like. If I go with about 10 campers in Cabin 4 and 10 than that means that Cabin 7 would have 36 campers, which seems like too many campers for one cabin.
There is always the case that Cabin 6 and Cabin 11 actually have more than I assume that they have as well. And there is always the case that there are less than a hundred campers at camp as well. Just a hundred is the number that Percy gives out so that is naturally the number that I want to start playing around with.
Just, Rick gave us numbers and I am of course trying to figure out what these numbers mean and how to divide them up among the cabins.
