Team Pirate Bible
So I mentioned that the bible/art book for Jake and the Never Land Pirates (back when it was called Team Pirate) was very hard to download. I waited a few hours for Mega to get its shit together and it paid off. Here's the art book for the series that would eventually be known as Jake and the Never Land Pirates: This book pre-dates the pilot episode I linked earlier this morning and it shows.
Tumblr media
Characters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, right off the bat it's clear that our group of Neverland Pirates was much different.
For one, the leader wasn't Jake, it was Slighty. Whether it's Slighty from the movies, or, much like Cubby and Nibs, a different character with the same name. I'm leaning towards that. Disney Jr's version of Slighty had Jake's role as the leader, who helps and guides his team. Something to notice is that the Sword of Forever isn't really a concept. It wasn't in the pilot that included Jake either. Jake/Slighty's object was a Spyglass rather than a sword given to him by Peter Pan.
There's also some insight on the development of Bucky. According to the series bible, he is enchanted by Pixie Dust, but not in what you'd expect. Instead of flying, he is alive! A sentient pirate ship who is part of Team Pirate, and communicates through ringing.
This totally shoots down my "Tinker Bell invented Bucky" theory but this is just as cool. Though considering Tink sprays Pixie Dust on Bucky in one episode, I'm now wondering the logistics of Pixie Dust in this world, but that's another lore post for another day.
Tumblr media
Also, I adore how Hook has his movie design here.
Locations, Curriculum, and Stories:

What-the, DINOSAURS??????????????? IN NEVERLAND???
Tumblr media
The first episode, The Mystery of Turtle Rock, seems to be what would soon become the Season 2 episode "Mystery of Mysterious Island!" The second one, I think is Pirate Ghost Story's beta version. But you can see how different things were in production between the final version, especially the dynamic between the characters/

I recently found a copy of the graphic novel version of Straight on Til Morning at my local used bookstore and got a great deal so I wanted to share a few of my likes, dislikes, and general observations. I’d been meaning to write up a proper review of the book for awhile now but have been SUPER behind. Anyway, the graphic novel follows the book pretty closely and I’ll be sharing some images from it, so this WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS for those of you who haven’t read it.
First off, the artwork for the graphic novel is beautiful and some scenes are illustrated in a really creative way. For example, I love the depiction of this particular scene where Wendy is writing her stories and Hook sort of…comes to life off the page.
Tumblr media
I also really love that while (most of) the characters are still recognizably Disney’s version…they also look a tad more realistic and have some of the illustrator’s own personal interpretation mixed in.
George Darling is a great example. In the graphic novel he is slimmer than in the film and looks remarkably like J.M. Barrie…which I have to consider was probably intentional.
Tumblr media
And then there’s the Lost Boys in their animal costumes…Tootles, Skipper (excuse me, this is Nibs erasure—you can add Skipper but don’t just eliminate Nibs!), Slightly, Cubby, and the Twins.
Tumblr media
The pirates, however, are a totally different story. Who the heck are these guys???
Tumblr media
Anyway… at least they get Hook’s personality right. I love this bit, in particular, where one of the pirates gets a little rough with Wendy and Hook is having none of it. Also, the idea of Hook capturing Wendy to be a mother to the crew is a nice nod to the book.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One big complaint I do have is that the characters are, on occasion, a little TOO self-aware. Like in this scene where one of the pirates makes a sort of on-the-nose observation about Hook’s feud with Pan.
Tumblr media
But I will admit, I did cackle at Hook’s reaction.
Tumblr media
He said would you please stop trying to psychoanalyze me and look for symbolism and just let the story be about a boy and a pirate? (Hook, how do you even know who Freud is??)
You may have noticed by now that I haven’t said anything about Peter… That’s because Peter barely features in the story at all and honestly when he does show up, he’s…kinda useless and clueless. Now, admittedly, Wendy is meant to be older in this (around 16) so of course, it’s reasonable to think she might not quite view him the same way she did at 12…but in having her team up with Tink to do all the heavy-lifting of the plot (because, ya know, girlpower and all that), Peter sort of ends up not really doing anything. I’d almost rather have an evil Pan, as annoying as that trope is because at least then he actually does something. In this story, it truly feels like Wendy has just…outgrown Peter altogether. And that hurts.
Speaking of which…ya know what hurts even more for me as a Hook fan? THIS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This poor man is curled up on the deck in the fetal position, terrified of a crocodile who has been long-dead, crying out for a best friend who never even existed except inside his own mind because he was so alone that he made him up.
O W !! Why would you do this to me, Disney?!
It ends for Hook with the crew deciding to drop him off somewhere with enough gold to pay for his keep and hire a caretaker because he’s so mentally unstable they don’t trust him to live by himself.
I hate to say it, but honestly, watching him die would be less painful. At least that would be over with fairly quickly. This just hurts.
But everyone else lives happily ever after, so it’s okay, right? Right??? 😫😭 (Don’t mind me, I’ll just be over here in the corner, crying over my pirate boy.)

Tiger Peony hc please ??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
------------------------------------------------------------
Tiger Peony, like her mother, was named after a flower.
Ironically, Peonies are her favorite flowers.
Orange is her favorite color.
Her parents are Tiger Lily and Romeo Lucignolo Rossí (aka Lampwick).
She and Tulip were the only ones of their siblings to be at their parents' wedding.
She has five siblings: Tulip (14, almost 15, in d3), Blue Veronica (8 years old in d3), Sunflower (2 in d3), and the twins—Rowan and Petunia (a few months old by d3).
She is 18 years old in d3.
Aside from Tulip, Tiger Peony is the only one of her siblings who can sew and do embroidery.
Despite popular belief, Tiger Peony actually likes her name—she is one of the few kids whose name is similar to their parents' name who does.
She thinks it sounds cool and the fact she likes the flower also helps.
Tiger Peony is a vegetarian for the most part and her favorite foods are Tofu, corn cakes, peanuts, rice cakes, trail mix, and jolly ranchers.
Cacao is her favorite drink (in Neverland) and Maize is her favorite food (in Neverland).
She is a student at Neverland Academy. Her mother is the headmistress and tourney coach there.
Her dad is a stay-at-home dad.
Her family has a home in Neverland and a vacation home in Auradon.
She is one of the leaders of the Neverland club (this one is inspired by one of @dragoneyes618 's fics).
Tiger Peony is good at sneaking from one place to another. I'm talking 'she can sneak from Neverland to Auradon without anyone realizing she was gone' kind of good.
She is an activist for various different causes.
She was very supportive of Ben's proclamation.
She's very competitive and a big fan of tourney despite the fact she doesn't play.
Tiger Peony is dating Sherwood's star archery player, Robert Coran Hood of Locksley. Also known as Bobby Hood.
She met Bobby when Sherwood and Neverland's teams were playing one another. He was commenting on the game— angry about how one of the lost boys got away with a cheap shot towards one of his friends.
Which led to the two of them arguing after the game.
It took awhile for the two of them to get together and for them to stop getting into arguments every time they met.
She is a fun loving, tom boyish, hippy-ish flower child.
She's also an artist, though she isn't the greatest at it.
Tiger Peony is also great at swimming and canoeing as well as dancing, singing, climbing, and giving speeches. She can play the lute, the flute, the drum, and the pan flute.
She's close to her cousins, Hototo and Anakin.
Her cousins, Pin and Ally, on the other hand, kind of annoy her with her antics but she's used to that.
She's close to her cousins, Fabian and Karina Collodi-Rossi-Liddell as well. Her favorite cousin is Fabian.
Tiger Peony is very popular and has a lot of friends who just love her laid back yet firm personality.
She's friends with the grandchildren of Maimie Mannering, Armus and Sienna (much to Peter’s dismay), the remaining lost children—Rufio, Thud Butt, Ace, Don't Ask, No Nap, Pockets, Latchboy, Too Small, the other twins (Sooner and Later), Twins (singular boy), Chubs, Cynthia, Meera, Stringbean, Maya, Tootles, and Baby—, the Darling Cousins (Wendy, John, Michael, Curly, Nibs, Tootles, the Twins, and Slightly), The Darling Cousins' Children, Tinkerbell and Terrance's children (Little Tinzen and his sister), etc. just to name a few.
She's fond of Jane, Daniel, and William (Wendy and Edward's kids) as well as Jamie, Wilma, and Diana (John and Luna's kids), Jeremiah, Wallace, Dalton, and Sally-May (Michael's kids), & Conrad and Millie (Slightly's son and daughter).
But is not a fan of Slightly’s son, Warpaint, or the twins’ sons, Chains and Shelly, however. They're bullies and she doesn't like them or that she always has to straighten their behavior out when they get back from Auradon Prep.
She is an immediate fan of the Bad Apples when she hears their songs and though she will never admit it, Tiger Peony is a fan of Tulip's band, the Donkey-ettes (though she thinks their name is cringey).
After the barrier is brought down in d3, Lampwick and Tiger Lily tries to enforce a strict curfew because they're afraid of the kids in their family somehow running into the Coachmen (or Hook) and getting snatched up.
Tiger Peony does not follow the curfew. At all. She’s eighteen and her parents can’t make her—especially when she’s away at University.
Lampwick once dropped Tiger Peony's favorite stuffed animal when she was three in front of her (it was an accident) and she gave him the biggest betrayed look that still haunts him to this day. Tiger Lily has it on camera.
There's a video of Lampwick purposing to Tiger Lily where a three year old Tiger Peony can be heard asking in an annoyed voice. "What's goin' on? Why's mama cryin'?"
When Tiger Peony was three, she kept trying to take a newborn Tulip on adventures. Which gave her parents quite a few heart attacks.
Tiger Peony used to be a mama's girl but has now grown out of it and is now close with both her parents but is more independent.
Peter used to babysit Tiger Peony when she was little but seeing as he's permanently 12, it didn't really last for long. Especially since he'd take her on adventures.
Lampwick and Tiger Lily raised their kids in a mixed culture household, meaning that the kids grew up on dishes and traditions from both their parents' cultures. They celebrated Christmas with Lampwick's family and Winter Treasure Day with Tiger Lily's family.
Her parents overprotective nature really annoys Tiger Peony sometimes though she tries not to show it because she understands why they're like that.
Tiger Peony, at age 12, decided that she wanted to be mostly vegetarian. Something the never fairies encouraged: Lampwick and Tiger Lily did their best to be supportive, but were also  concerned about it having negative affects on her health and they've done a lot of research to try and find an appropriate middle ground.
Tiger Peony was a fast learner, so while she was also technically average for the amount of time it took for her to learn how to talk and walk once she got the hang of it, she was hard to keep up with.
The color orange smoothed Tiger Peony as a baby because it reminded her of her dad's hair and it is now her favorite color though she doesn't know why.
Tiger Peony had a Peter Pan doll until she was seven. She also has a stuffed mouse ballerina.
She's close to her uncle, Hard-to-Hit, and her mom's friend, Shining Pearl.
Tiger Peony has godparents—they’re Pete and Shining Pearl.
She also doesn't like Alexander and Eilonwy’s oldest two kids, Scarlet and Carter, because they're rude.
Never have a mud, food, paint, water, or snowball fight with Tiger Peony. This is a child who was babysat by Peter Pan and the lost boys—you will not win the fight.
Tiger Peony was taught how to swim by the mermaids, who are friends with Tiger Lily.
English is Tiger Peony’s third language. Her first two were the language of her mom's tribe and Italian.
Thanks to Lampwick, Tiger Lily, and Peter Tiger Peony has very strong opinions regarding Auradon and the isle and is not afraid to share them (it took her years to gain a filter thanks to Peter).
Tiger Peony loves denim.
One time Lampwick went to jail for punching an entitled paparazzi person for taking pictures of a young Tiger Peony without permission—It's one of Tiger Peony’s earliest memories.
Tiger Peony's first word was ‘Vaffanculo’. Said to Beast. Luckily, he still doesn't know what it means.
She has an InstaRoyal Account and loves watching Auratube.
Her favorite movie is a horror movie by the name of ‘The Spectre of Sherwood Forest’. It's very scary and very gory, and Lampwick fainted when he watched it.
Tiger Peony is scared of the paparazzi: it's the one noticeable fear she has, other than being kidnapped that is.
She inherited Lampwick's allergy to cottonwood trees. She's also the only one of her siblings who is unaffected by poison ivy, which has gotten all of them into situations.
After the Auradon Prep Donkey Incident of 2061 Tiger Peony was furious with Pin and Tulip, and rained hell down upon them.
Did she tattle to their parents? No. But after discovering how vengeful Tiger Peony could be they wished she did.
Her favorite holiday is either the fall Harvest Festival (if it counts) or Winter Treasure Day.
Tiger Peony has a pet donkey named 'Carrot'.

thoughts on the 2000 cathy rigby musical version of slightly? i’ve always appreciated how >:( he seems to be the whole time
HI ANON! I hope you know this ask has made my absolute day, thank you for the ask!!
So I will say that I have a very complicated relationship with the Charlap and Leigh musical*. I find it pretty badly paced for a musical adaptation of a play, and the soundtrack is very hit or miss w me. It's no secret I much prefer the Stiles and Drewe "Musical Adventure", but for all my dislike of Charlap, I've always said that the Cathy Rigby version is by far the best staging of it.
*Charlap is the musical with "I won't grow up" "I gotta crow" and has had Mary Martin, Allison Williams and Cathy Rigby as Peters at different points. It's the one anon is talking abt
A way a lot of Peter Pan adaptations fail for me, top fan of the Lost Boys, is to make the boys too analogous. This is why I dislike the boys in the Mary Martin ver, they're all identical to eachother (save for Tootles, kinda) I can't even tell which one is which at times. Double for the Allison Williams ver (they also fail from looking like the fucking Newsies and there being like 30 of them. I dislike large Lost Boy casts anwyays but that's a diff post for a diff day). A good way to differentiate the Lost Boys is their introductory scene, which a lot of adaptations choose to cut for some reason.
The Cathy Rigby version of Charlap does include this scene, which is why I like it significantly more than the MM and AW productions. CR Charlap is a lot more like a staging of Peter Pan with Charlap's music at intervals, not a staging of Charlap's musical with Peter Pan at intervals, which is how IN MY OPINION, a lot of Charlap productions end up.
(also in this review thingy i'm gonna be referring to the cast of THIS proshot!)
(waayyyy more under the cut)
There's an individual in the Peter Pan fandom with an absolutely huge following so I'm not going to name names but if you know who I mean then you know who I mean, that considers Cathy Rigby the best on stage Peter Pan ever, and the rest of her cast to be the best stage cast of PP, and honestly, to an extent I'm inclined to agree.
My focus is always gonna be on the Lost Boys and it's an immediate con for me in the pros and cons list if the Lost Boys (and ESPECIALLY Slightly, but we'll get to Slightly in a sec!) are handled poorly, and CR doesn't handle them poorly, I honestly love them. Now they're definitely not perfect. No Curly and Nibs and Tootles are blended into Tootles and Nibs is just there.. ig, but I really like them. Another important thing to keep in for the Lost Boys is their comedy. I like when stage productions have them almost clowning, Barrie himself described Slightly as the comedic figure.
The boys are a great source of comedy especially on stage. CR keeps a lot of their physical theatre elements, they roughhouse a lot, something which the original 1904 boys were instructed to do in the script, and the number "Wendy" reminds me of my GCSE drama piece the way it's full of physicality, humour, and clowning! I also really like their costuming!
Tumblr media
I like how distinct they each are, and that they don't get a "uniform" like the Disney lost boys, or AW Charlap ones. I also love that they don't just look like... normal kids (MM CHARLAP I SEE YOU!). They each have personality whilst still looking like... The Lost Boys.
They remind me a lot of the '03 boys, design wise, too, with the scrappy roughness of their look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, yeah, I do actually like them.
Onto Slightly, then.
One thing that I think Barrie did wrong was cutting the Slightly Soiled joke from the 1911 novel. Yes I know it's stupid toilet humour yes I know it's unfunny. But I think it's a good character establishing moment for him when he gets to be his egotistical self, bragging to the others. CR keeps it and it does genuinely get a laugh, which is cool.
In fact, this production just does a great job at nailing the "most conceited of all the boys" nature in him. He's really vain and just has this air of arrogance about him which I think every version of Slightly needs to have. One thing I love watching in scenes with a large cast including the boys is to watch their background actions, and I love how in Ugg-A-Wugg, before the big group dance at least — he legitimately looks like he doesn't want to be there (me too man, i also would not want to be in ugg a wugg), which is def giving the "i'm better than this + all of you" Slightly Soiled vibe.
I also really like how the other boys pick on him a lot? The other boys being mean to Slightly as a staging choice goes way back to the earliest castm where he was the only one played by a man, the others played by women, and it'd look inappropriate for him to share a bed with them, them all playing young children in 1904, so they would gang up on him and chase him out the home before any bedtime scenes. Of course this was later changed in modern adaptations where we don't bat an eyelid at that anymore and Lost Boy casts have been a variety of genders... but him being the go-to target of their scuffling remains. Probably because he's a huge jerk still, and always has been.
Thing only I even noticed: how he gets the "I will stay a boy forever" verse in I Won't Grow Up!! I've been saying for years that's Slightly's verse and no one has listened to me! (It's a bit like how I talk to the wall about how the 'wallet fat and an old man's hat' line in Be Back Soon from Oliver! is Charley Bates, these are things only I care about).
I just really love how the actor playing him carries himself too. This production does a great job of the minor parts, chorus, and ensemble staying in character all the time, I really enjoy it. How he walks with the snootiness and vanity you'd expect from Slightly Soiled, but yet how he drops the bravado around Peter. How he seems perpetually annoyed by being surrounded by the others and thinks he's better than them. I think the dude playing him understood the assignment, he's so fun and so Slightly.
Agree that he's perpetually walking around like >:[, Very him. Nails the egotism of Slightly.
I love him, actually. Wish we got to see him dancing w an ostritch (my favourite Slightly moment literally NOT ONE DIRECTOR HAS EVER ADAPTED!! 💔) but yeah. This Slightly Soiled gets the @/slightlys0iled stamp of approval!
Thanks for the ask!
