-you were both comfortable with each other, but it took you both a little time to complete open up

-you sat in her cabin on the floor, backs leaning on the bed

Warnings: none just fluffy fluff, because it’s Xiao there is a teeny tiny bit of angst like he’s insecure etc, slight spoilers of Xiao’s story and voicelines, English isn’t my first language so if you see mistakes please tell me

A = Admiration (what do they absolutely adore about you?)

He likes the way you can calm him, reassure him that he’s doing enough… he likes how you just love him for who he is and don’t judge him for his past and weaknesses. He likes feeling understood

B = Bonding (what's your favorite mutual bonding activity?)

He just melts when he lays his head on your lap and you start tracing his tattoo, feeling his scars etc… just feeling his skin with your soft touch

However, it will take him some time to let you be that intimate with him. (He will flinch the first times you try to caress him, even if you warn him beforehand)

C = Cuddling (how do they like to cuddle?)

Xiao will never admit it but he likes to be cradled and held. Please let him rest him on top of you but don’t comment on it or he’ll never do it again…

When you want to be held, he’ll gladly do it, embracing you until you fall asleep in his arms

D = Dates (what does their ideal date with you look like?)

Dates with Xiao would be very peaceful and calm in general. Before being in a relationship with you, Xiao knew barely anything about dates, so he was a little nervous at the idea of having some with you. He likes to take you out to stroll in quiet areas of Liyue, where he just holds your hand and enjoys your presence and the scenery

E = Emotions (how do they express emotion around you?)

At the beginning of your relationship, Xiao finds it very difficult to show you how he feels. He has a hard time communicating with his words and prefers to use actions and kind gestures to convey his love. After some time, he gets a little better at expressing his feelings but his love language doesn’t change

F = Family (do they want one? If they do, when?)

Xiao would not be comfortable at the idea of having a family. He is the protector of Liyue, the Vigilant Yaksha and the Conqueror of Demons, he does not have time for such things. If you take enough time to convince him (you better be immortal lol) he will maybe give it a thought

G = Gifts (how do they feel about gift giving? What are their habits when it comes to this?)

Giving you gifts wouldn’t be something regular for him. It’s always unexpected and so meaningful. Xiao doesn’t give you gifts to give you gifts. He shares a part of his soul, it’s like a piece of his dedication towards you. You talked about something you liked to him? He will store this information in a corner of his mind and offer it to you when you already forgot about it

H = Holding Hands (when/how do they like to hold hands?)

In public, Xiao will never hold your hands. He’s not a fan of pda and if you just look at him lovingly in front of others he will pass away.

When the both of you are alone though, he likes to touch your hands, feel your palm and fingers with his. It just feels very intimate to him

I = Injury (how would they act if you got hurt?)

He will blame himself. Please reassure him or he’ll never forgive himself… he will make sure you’re alright and patch you up the best he can. He even would go to Bubu pharmacy to see if there is a way to relieve the pain

J = Jokes (do they like to joke around with or prank you? how?)

Xiao isn’t a prankster (shocking I know) though he appreciates humorous people and will gladly listen to your jokes with a slight smile plastered on his face

K = Kisses (how do they like to kiss you?)

Whatever you do, he will always be a blushing mess afterwards. He is the most comfortable with soft and short kisses where your lips barely touch

When you do kiss him more passionately, he just stops functioning. He will look at you wide-eyed and just won’t say a word, completely flustered

L = Love Confession (how'd they confess to you? how'd you get together?)

I think your relationship just kind of happened. He is the kind of guy to dismiss his feelings towards you until you’re literally hugging him. Afterwards he notices how much effect you have on him and it’s honestly a little scary to him

M = Memory (favorite memory together?)

During the festival season, no one used to pray to him. That’s until you came in his life, and each year, offered incense for him. He said he didn’t care that people wouldn't pray for him but when you did, something felt so special about it. It made his heart flutter and he thinks seeing you being all giddy about it afterwards makes it the best memory of you two. Even if it’s “simple” it means so much more to him

N = Nightmare (what is their worst fear?)

The mere thought of hurting you on accident makes him sick. What is his karmic debt ended up harming you? What if you saw him in his true form and were so terrified or disgusted by it that you would leave him? These thoughts could easily make Xiao spiral and in these moments he just needs you to reassure him, although he will never ask for any kind of support

O = Obvious (how obvious do they make it that they like you?)

Noticing that Xiao fell for you was quite difficult. He dismissed his own feelings for a long time and hid his emotions towards you even more. The only “clue” would have been that he actually cared for you. He would enjoy spending time with you, unlike with other mortals

P = Pet Names (what do they like to call you?)

I think pet names are one of the things Xiao doesn’t really understand about humans. You have a name why should he call you something else..? If you insist he’ll call you something like “love” to make you happy

Q = Quality Time (how do they like to spend time with you?)

Xiao doesn’t feel the need to be vocal during your quality time. Just cuddling with you in bed will already make him feel so content without the need to utter a word. It could also be just sitting outside in the evening, silently admiring how the sun goes down in Liyue while his fingers are intertwined with yours

R = Romance (how romantic are they?)

Xiao is romantic in his own way. He doesn’t know much about human love traditions, so he just shows you his loves his own way. It can be by just by discreetly sliding your hand in his (it wasn’t on purpose of course, we all believe you Xiao) or by letting you eat some of his almond Tofu without complaining

S = Secrets (how open are they with you?)

Xiao is not one to discuss about how he feels. He will open up with some a lot of time and tell you about his past, but they are some things that will remain a mystery to you

T = Time (how long did it take you to get together?)

Just getting to talk to him was a hassle, imagine getting him to realise that he likes you and that you like him back?! You better be patient because this man will take forever to get in a relationship with you

U = Unique (what makes them unique?)

As an Adeptus, I think Xiao is already pretty unique. He has a few cute quirks that will always make you smile (like eating snow). In a relationship, Xiao would be quite unique too. Since he’s not a human and knows not much about them, he handles his love for you in his own way, clumsily but very sweetly

V = Vaunt (what are they proud of? do they like to show you off?)

Like I said before, Xiao isn’t a pda-fan at all. He would be very proud of building a trusting relationship between you two but he would definitely not show it in public. Not a lot of people would even know that he is in a relationship with someone

W = Warrior (how do they feel about you fighting? would they fight for you, beside you, etc?)

He would be terrified at the thought of loosing you. Xiao probably wouldn’t even let you fight along with him, but if you were to, he would be overprotective give his absolute best.

X = X-Ray (how well are they able to read you?)

Very, very poorly… he just doesn’t get human emotions (he tries his best with you though 🥺). As time goes on, he starts to get used to your habits and gets a grasp of how to deal with your emotions. Be patient with him, he really wants to understand you

Y = Yes (how would they propose to you?)

I just imagine him doing his research asking Zhongli on how to correctly propose. Poor guy he is completely panicked at the idea of messing up. Once he’s prepared enough, he will take you to a nice calm spot under the moonlight and get on one knee. He will be so nervous during the whole evening, it would be impossible for you not to notice it.

Z = Zzz (how do they act when they're sleepy? what's it like sharing a bed with them?)

Xiao canonically doesn’t sleep, but if you were to let him rest on your chest while playing with his hair… there would be a slight chance of him dozing off… 🤫

When you’re asleep in your shared bed though, Xiao likes look at you sleeping. He prays he doesn’t come of as a creep, but seing you so peaceful just does something to him

“There is no way,” she said to Patrick as she struggled to pull her phone out of her back pocket. “How?” Y/N whispered to herself, and she looked for the app that she used to track her cycle. Her mind trying to remember the last time she had slept with Harry and if they had used a condom. More importantly, she couldn’t remember if she had taken her pill that night. She usually took it after dinner around eight, but they had been so drunk that night.

“When a man and a woman—”

“Shut up, Patrick!” Y/N didn’t need his dry humor at the time. Her mind was cloudy and heard her heartbeat like a drum in her chest. She ran her hands across her face as she no longer left her legs and could only hear her own heartbeat.

“Breath, Y/N” Patrick tried to call her down, seeing that her face had gone pale, and she could barely hold her torso up. “Look at me” He commanded her, “breath just like me”.

“I- I can’t be pregnant,” She said in between heavy breaths, “there is no way. I've always been so careful.” It was as if she was trying to convince herself. No one could deny that she had always been exceptionally careful to drink her pill ever since her mother had put her on it. “I might not be pregnant. My gynecologist always said I would have trouble getting pregnant if I ever wanted to have kids.” It had hurt her to hear it, but she had accepted it. She reminded herself that the doctor had said trouble and not can’t.

“You know what you need to do.” Patrick said, “You need to take a test”.

“What if I am?” She covered her mouth, still shocked that it could be a possibility, “What am I going to do? I am not ready to be a mom! I don’t even have a job!” She explained.

“You are making assumptions based on nothing. First things first let’s go buy you a pregnancy test” Patrick got off the bench, determined to help her best friend figure out her future. He knew that if Y/N were pregnant and decided to have the baby, she would need to contact Harry. Patrick also knew that it wasn’t going to be easy, convincing her to tell him.

They crossed the street to a pharmacy, Y/N walked past the pregnancy test aisle and stopped before it. She stared at the army of them, and she still couldn’t process it all. She decided to buy blue ones that were digital.

“You should take another” Patrick suggested, after he had picked a bunch of snacks and drinks for the night. He knew it was going to be a long one. “In case that one it’s defective”. So, Y/N takes another one with a different mechanism for an answer.

“Patrick,” she said after they had paid and were on their way to the apartment. “I can’t raise a baby on my own.” Patrick hooked arms with her and kissed her head.

“You are not alone” he insisted, “I know you feel very alone because of everything that has happened with Harry, but you still got people around you. Plus, I am sure that Harry wouldn’t let you raise him on your own. He seems like a responsible father”.

Y/N didn’t say anything else until they were back in the warmth of their apartment. She was too busy thinking about Harry’s reaction. Oliver hadn’t even turned a year. He couldn’t possibly want another baby, especially after everything they had said to one another.

Patrick played some music and took all the snacks and placed them on the coffee table. He wanted to set the scene and wanted it to be the least stress-free possible. He was also nervous for her. Patrick had always heard her life plans and none of them involved an unwanted pregnancy. He was also sure that Y/N wouldn’t have the heart to go through an abortion. A guilty conscience would eat her away. It was just the way that she was wired especially after spending so much time with kids.

“Ready?” He asked her as she plopped down on the couch. “To pee on the stick?” he clarified.

“My bladder isn’t full” she pouted, “What are we doing?!”.

“I don’t even know” Patrick exhaled, “But here. Drink up” he handed her a large fruit punch Gatorade.

“Why do I feel like you want me to actually be pregnant?” Y/N asked she took the cap off the drink.

“Because I think you will be a wonderful mother if you are pregnant.” She smiled at her best friend and started to chug the Gatorade. It was actually quite nice. After all the nausea that she had been experiencing, it was very hydrating.

Halfway through drinking it, she left the need to go.

“Here” Patrick handed her the test and allowed her to do her business in the bathroom. After she peed successfully on the stick she paced on the counter after covering it with some paper towels.

“Set a timer for three minutes,” Y/N said as she walked out of the bathroom. Patrick nodded and diligently placed a timer on her phone.

They only needed to wait three minutes, but it felt eternal. Y/N started walking across the room trying to make the time go faster. On the other hand, Patrick just started shoving chips into his mouth, wanting to bite into something crunchy. It was quiet in the room aside from the chips and the soft music playing in the background.

The phone ringing startled them both out of their daze.

“I don't want to look” She confessed as she walked up to the bathroom and exited right back around.

“Do you want me to check for you?” He offered even though his hands were shaking, and he knew he would probably read it wrong and drop it a few times.

“No. This is something I should do” Y/N nodded and took two deep breaths before going to pick it up. Patrick waited for a few minutes for her reaction, but it never came.

“So?” He yelled from the living room, but once again it was dead quiet. So, Patrick pushed the bag of chips off his legs and got up. She was starting there looking at the test over and over again.

Patrick looked over his shoulder and gasped, couldn’t believe his eyes. In his defense, he had never seen a positive test before. It read ‘PREGNANT’ and under said 1–2 weeks.

“Holy shit,” he said under his breath as he wrapped his arms around her front behind.

“Holy shit,” she said too.

Life after Y/N had left a sour taste in his mouth. It had been incredibly hard for everyone in the house.

Harry hadn’t been able to provide the comfort that Y/N gave Oliver, and he had been sleeping horribly since that night. The first few nights Harry had come close to start crying with him. It broke his heart to see his son so distraught about losing his favorite person. Sometimes, he felt like Oliver was more her son than his because he certainly preferred her over him. Things eventually got easier; Harry made sure to follow his schedule, handwritten by Y/N that was posted on the fridge.

However, even if Oliver started adapting to her absence from Harry things got worse. The void that Y/N had felt in his life was more than noticeable. He would lay in bed and turn to his side and could only remember how she would shuffle her body closer to his in search of heat in the middle of the night. He hated waking up to an empty bed. The apartment was cold and lifeless.

“Mr. Styles?” Andrew said as he entered his office with a tray with his favorite breakfast. Harry held his head with his hands, while his elbows rested on his desk. He exhaled loudly and pulled his head up. “How about some breakfast?”

“Thank you, Andrew,” he said to him as he placed the tray on his desk. He wasn’t hungry, but he knew that Andrew was just trying to lift his mood a little. He had never seen him so heartbroken and even though Andrew hadn’t seen him shed a tear, he could tell that he was going through a rough moment. The bag under his eyes, the loss of appetite, the long hours working, and the fact that his suits were hanging off him since he had stopped going to the gym because of lack of energy.

“If you don’t mind me, speaking out of topic here” he carefully said, “perhaps you should give her a call? Or reach out to her? And she is just waiting for you.” Harry pursed his lips and Andrew thought that he was going to yell at him or fire him. He had been very on edge ever since they returned from Italy for obvious reasons.

“I’ve already called her, Andrew. Unfortunately, it seems like she had blocked me from reaching her which only means she wants nothing to do with me.” Harry attempted to call her the next day after their breakup. He wanted to talk to her and apologize for asking like a maniac, but the call never went through. Harry went through Instagram, but he was blocked there too, and on every social media. So, he recurred to an email even though he knew that she never checked them.

Andrew frowned and couldn't believe the extent that Y/N had gone to shut him out of her life. He personally didn’t know what he had done to anger her in that way, so he couldn’t speculate. He just couldn’t believe that the love that they had for one another had banished so quickly and so easily. Andrew was just sure of one thing and that was that Harry loved her endlessly and that he would forgive him in a heartbeat.

It was the next morning after Y/N had found out that she was pregnant when she received an email to her work email. The email had woken her up from her slumber. Patrick had decided to take a personal day, to take care of Y/N since he knew that she was struggling emotionally. And luckily, he stayed because the email that she had just received destabilized her emotionally.

“What happened?” Patrick ran to her room as she heard her sobbing uncontrollably.

Y/N handed him her phone, showing her an email that the nanny agency had sent her after she had applied to another family.

“Dear Ms. Y/L/N, thank you for submitting your interest in working for the Sinclair family. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to give you this job or any other job of this kind in the upcoming future. It has come to our attention that you have had an interpersonal relationship with the father of the last family assigned. May we remind you that it’s a violation of the code of conduct of our employees and therefore we will be terminating your contract with our agency. We wish you the best.”

“What have I gotten myself into Patrick?” She sobbed as the tears streamed down her face...

Jack knew he had to come clean to Dr. Carty about what he did the other night. He was surprisingly not as pissed as he would have expected.

"Jack, if your side effects were this bad then you should have told me. I will send a few new prescriptions to the pharmacy but I want you to start making notes of the side effects every day. We have to figure out a better way for you to get the things you need without wrecking your system." Dr. Carty pinched the bridge of his nose.

"You're lucky she checked on you when she did. You could have died." He scolded softly and Jack nodded his head.

"I know. I guess if I'm going to have a guardian angel, it's probably a good thing she's a nurse that lives next door." Jack could see that Dr. Carty wasn't impressed with the humor.

"You should consider adding her as an emergency contact in the event you decide you want to get a little fast and loose with your medications again." He peered over his glasses and Jack scrunched his face.

"I don't think we're there just yet." Jack didn't want to burden Y/n with so much of his shit so soon. He wanted to build up a connection before she had to be a part of all his demons.

They talked for almost an extra hour, discussing new medications, what they're supposed to do and some of the side effects. Jack made sure to make a list to ask Y/n about the next time he saw her which turned out to be at around 9:30 that night. He saw her taking her evening walk as he sat on the porch reading through googles best medication side effects. He sat the computer down and jogged towards her.

"Hey!" She jumped making him laugh.

"Sorry, you scared me." She pulled her headphones out and pocketed them as he started walking next to her.

"You're looking a lot better. How are you feeling?" Y/n she asked as he shoved his hands in his pockets.

"I'm feeling a lot better thanks to you. I just wanted to apologize again-"

"Jack please. I'm just glad I was able to get to you in time. I highly suggest switching to weed if you need something to knock you out but that's just my medical opinion." She smiled at him.

"I finally talked to my Doc about the medicine change. I made a list of all the ones he's changing up just in case you want to give an opinion on that too." Jack pulled the list out and she laughed.

"Are you comfortable sharing that with me? I mean you can just tell me about the side effects when they hit. You don't have to-"

"I trust you." Jack pressed and she took the slip of paper. She nodded at the names and handed it back to him.

"These are some good alternatives. I would keep an eye out for dry mouth with this one. They make tabs to put under your tongue if it gets too annoying." Jack smiled at the recommendation.

"Who takes care of you if you're taking care of everyone else?" Jack asked curiously.

"Oh I've taken care of myself since I was young. I don't require a lot of care anyway. You'll be shocked to hear I am insanely boring." She lowered her voice.

"I don't believe that for one second. I'm sure you've got a wild night life that no one knows about. Maybe a secret second job at a club where you can dance in scantly clad clothes to get your kicks." Jack teased.

"So you think I'm a nurse by day and a stripper by night?" She laughed.

"I barely have enough energy to wash my hair let alone change out of scrubs to find some upper body to swing around a pole. Plus I have terrible knees." Jack laughed as she tried to show off a squat and winced.

"Okay so no secret double life. How about hobbies? What do you like to do when you aren't working or taking care of your mom and crazy neighbor?" Jack watched her take a moment to actually think about it.

"I like to read. I like to build things with my hands. I love to paint." Jack let out a belly laugh.

"Well shit why didn't you say that? I have tons of house that needs painting!" Jack gestured over his shoulder towards the house and she shook her head at him.

"I like landscape painting, not free manual labor." She pointed out.

"Maybe you could do a painting for me? My dad was an artist. He has this drawing of the house that kind of got wrecked during the clean out. I would love to get it redone. I'll even pay you for it." Jack offered.

"You don't have to pay me. I'm not an artist. I just like to paint." She blushed. This was kind of the first time Jack had seen a more vulnerable side of Y/n. She always seemed confident in how she presented herself. As a nurse, as a daughter, as a care taker.

"What about you? I think you mentioned you like to write?" Y/n remembered.

"Yeah I'm working on a book about my life...kind of. Changing the names to protect the guilty I suppose." Jack rubbed the back of his neck nervously.

"I'm sure it'll be great. The horror stories of our lives always make for believable fiction. Most people don't think there are people who actually struggle as writers portray." She paused in front of the front gate and Jack stopped walking.

"Maybe...you could read some of what I have? Let me know how believable it is?" Jack asked nervously earning a sweet smile.

"I would love that, Jack." Jack now felt more anxious than before knowing she might hate his writing or his life story.

"I'm glad you're feeling better. Please call me if you start to feel your breathing getting weird. I'm still worried you're going to have after effects." Y/n touched his arm and he nodded.

"I'm feeling better, I promise but I will call you if anything feels off." Jack promised.

"You can call me too if you need anything...or you know, you just want to talk." Jack took a step further and Y/n laughed.

"You want to talk about all the neighborhood gossip? Did you see Sharon's new gardening outfit? Absolutely scandalous." She teased.

"If Sharon's the one with the red hair and huge tits then yes, absolutely scandalous." Jack's smirk made Y/n hit his chest with the back of her hand.

"Ew Jack! Stop jerking off to the neighbors!" She pushed her way through the gate and Jack threw his hands up.

"What!? You can't just expect me to not take advantage of free tits!? I'm a man!" He defended.

"Now you're hurting my feelings. I thought I was special." She put her hands over her heart.

"You are. You still hold the top spot of best tits in town." Jack admitted. Y/n smiled so brightly her cheeks were blushed as she shook her head.

"Goodnight Jack." She waved over her shoulder and Jack turned back to the road to walk himself home. He took a breath he didn't know he had been holding, worried things would have changed between them. He was ready to make a different kind of connection with Y/n. He just hoped she felt the same way.

Updates below the cut, as I expressed the story of yesterday in somewhat comedic terms, but I’m sure the subtext was concerning.

So yesterday I went into work under a lot of stress about the various deadlines I have to meet. I also noticed I was developing an ear infection. I get those a lot because I have tiny ear canals and sometimes with congestion from fall allergies the whole ENT system gets fucked up. As such I know what an ear infection feels like, so I figured I’d leave work early, go to the urgent care down the road, get some antibiotics, and go home to rest and meet my writing deadline.

Well, I went to the urgent care and after waiting three hours or so they were like, you have an ear infection but your blood pressure is super high, and we need to send you to the ER to lower it. (I have a family history, and with the amount of stress I’ve been under lately, I imagine genetics decided it was time to kick in.) I was freaking out at that point because I hadn’t had dinner yet, and what they were talking about sounded like… idk, how long was I gonna be in the hospital? Forever? And that shit is expensive even with insurance, so, you know.

So I asked if I could call @coruscantrhapsody to come get me. I knew I needed to go to the ER but also that I didn’t want to go, and that I would try to get out of it because I was scared and tired and yet try to make myself appear competent at all costs. I also knew she could convince me to go. So she came to me at the urgent care right away, and she brought plush Sara and plush August, and we made plans to go to the ER together.

And honestly, she got me through it like a champ. We coped through silly jokes and dark humor, and a little bit of singing of Disney songs. When the nurse took my blood sample (which came back in good shape, thankfully) she said it was totally appropriate for Halloween. Then she got me home before midnight and now is working from home today while I stay home. I’ll probably be taking tomorrow off too. I’m going to walk to the pharmacy soon to pick up the meds they prescribed me and then I’m going to come back home and not deal with logistics until the afternoon at least.

I still have some deadlines to meet, but they’re going to be shifting now and I think I can get some extensions for the stuff I need to get extended on. And I think this is the basis of a conversation with my employer about like. Idk. I woke up today 95% grateful for the people who love and care for me and who helped me out yesterday, and I’m also grateful that I lucked out with doctors and nurses that night because the medical system is honestly terrible, but 5% of me is like Fuck The Grind that got me here. You know? And I can sort of bookmark that idea and come back to it when I’m ready. Which I will do. But first, it is time to rest. I can deal with everything else after I rest. And I got home in time to listen to the old War of the Worlds radio play tonight and enjoy it, and that’s incredibly important to me.

Tl;dr I spent an evening in the emergency room last night, hooked up to machines and holding an August Horn plushie in my lap, but I’m ok now thanks to my best friend’s care and all-around amazingness.

OKAY so I've been binge watching anime, went through a few

Eminence in Shadow is wack, not something I would finish, but pretty fun. This dude is a dramatic ass bitch, I love it. Not my type of show, so I didn't finish it, but someone with a more developed sense of humor will probably like it.

The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated as an Aristocrat is definitely a recommendation, if you can ignore the incest and their ages. There's... an unsettling amount. There's also an episode dedicated to the backstory of the adopted sister for one of his identities and.... well, there's quite a lot of SA, so be warned.

Reincarnated as a Sword is a much more wholesome recommendation, it's very found family heavy and I love it. It goes into some dark places, but the relationship between the two MCs is sweet. Can't wait for season two! Also Klimt is great and I love him. He doesn't have much art so I'm gonna have to draw something later.

I didn't finish How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom because it was kinda starting to bore me. It's fine, like a 6/10 from the four episodes I've seen, but i don't think I like it. MC is kinda cringe too ngl, can't give specifics, he just gives off a vibe. You'll probably like it if you like the whole kingdom building thing, I think, didn't get very far, so beware ig

Kemono Michi is a thing. Didn't like it's first episode and didn't want to waste my time. Glad I didn't because next is the reason for this post:

Parallel World Pharmacy is a must watch for anyone who likes wholesome isekai, medicine, or just likes wholesome anime. He is very powerful, has the mark of the god of medicine, and was a pharmacist that overworked himself to death because he eventually wanted to open his own pharmacy so he could help people. This baby can fit so much wholesome in it..... and some non-wholesome things. The best part, pretty much no fan-service or sexualization of the female mcs aside from a few shots. They're pretty few and far between, easy to ignore. I'm glad I don't have to deal with the sexualization of minors that often happens in isekai.

Anyway, I'd rank them in this order: 1. Parallel World Pharmacy 2. Reincarnated as a Sword 3. Eminence in Shadow 4. The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated as an Aristocrat 5. How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom 6. Kemono Michi

I ranked EiS above TWFAGRaaA because it's genuinely pretty funny, has the cool "I am atomic" moment, and because the incest is really a no for me, alongside the sexualization of fourteen year olds. Just because they're adults in that world doesn't mean I like it.

Smudged Character Rundown 9/23/23

This is a rundown of all of the characters currently showcased in my DOAWK work, Smudged! Spoilers for the upcoming chapter.

Day 23 - Calzadilla la Cueza to Sahagun

It was a 13 miler today. The weather was due to be warmer so we sent our bags on ahead and set off before 7.

When I went to the loo in the night there was a poor girl who had dragged her mattress out into the hallway as a chap in her room was snoring really badly. One thing you take with you is good earplugs! But the Spanish also have long pillows that you can wrap around your head if all else fails.

The sun was only just coming up when we left the village. It was 3-4 miles to the next village and our breakfast and we passed through fields and woodlands with pretty flowers by the path. It was cool enough for second layers, really nice walking weather and we made good time.

On the way into our breakfast village Ledigos we saw a humorous sign telling us to go to the second bar, so we did! The coffee was good and we had tostada to go with it.

The next bit of the walk took us through fields where we each got the hang of line 4. We now have the first verse of the anthem almost there!

Jane was on a mission and sped ahead, so I dawdled and took a selfie and pictures of fields, as you do. We had said that we’d take coffee at the next village but Jane was almost through it before she remembered and turned back, but we carried on again as it was only another mile until the one after.

Here we met Kate and Malcolm, two siblings we met a few days ago, and enjoyed our orange juice and coffee in their company. We also met Terry, a Scotsman doing the Camino to raise money for a hospice, and he was hilarious. The cafe/albergue was really cool in a pretty village with knitted flag bunting around the square.

A few miles of following the side of a main road and we finally got our first sign of Sahagun in the distance.

Before we entered the path diverted and we were taken over an old bridge by the Ermita de la Virgen del Puente. There were two statues that apparently mark the half way point. It’s all a bit confusing as to how long the Camino actually is and where the halfway point is, but anyway, we’ve crossed it.

We walked into Sahagun, getting a bit confused as to where our hostel was. It has turned out to be yet another really quirky place housed in an old building. We were checked in and given a key for number 1 so we went to investigate as our bags hadn’t turned up yet. We walked up to the first floor and there were doors marked 2 to 5. Confused we went back downstairs and were told to go in the lift to the 3rd floor. Right at the top was number 1, a 4-bed dorm with a little patio outside. The toilet room is the other side of the patio, and the shower is in what looks like a cupboard in the corner of the room. We were not best pleased as it didn’t look like the toilet had been cleaned.

Anyway, it was lunchtime and after Jane had sorted out the dirty bathroom with the girl on reception (no need to describe how Jane would sort that out…) we made a quick stop at a pharmacy to get some reading glasses for Jane who had lost hers in Burgos, before making our way to the main square for a menu del dia. It was a very pleasant meal and we enjoyed people watching.

Back at the hostel our bags still hadn’t arrived, and after a couple of unsuccessful phone calls the hostel owner managed to find out that they were on their way. We went upstairs to chill and 5 minutes later there was a knock on the door, our bags had arrived.

Showered and rested I wanted to have a look at some interesting churches we could see from the balcony. However, there were also dark clouds coming our way…

We got to the first church with just a couple of spots of rain. We think it was also a museum but didn’t go in. The second church was also impressive but again not open. The wind was whipping up a bit by now. The final church had a wonderful tower but more disappointment in being able to go in.

With splatters of rain coming down we made our way back to the main square for a drink. Our American Camino family slowly appeared, first Tim the Texan then Joe and Charles. We had a really pleasant evening having a few drinks and discussing the differences between our cultures, thank goodness for Aneurin Bevan is all I can say.

Back at the hostel we’re a bit late to bed. We’re sharing the room with a Spaniard man, I hope he’s accepting of our ways and isn’t up too early.

It’s an 11 miler tomorrow, should be a bit cooler so we’re carrying our packs.

Fall 2022 Faves

The Fall 2022 season was way better than the summer season.

My returning favorites were excellent, but these three new shows came out of nowhere and absolutely knocked me out:

#1 - Bocchi the Rock!

The total package. Great characters, humor, comradeship, and feels; interesting story; and animation that does quiet really, really well, and then recklessly swerves into whatever style will deliver the best joke. Bocci as kaiju? Picasso face? Or just anxiety squiggles? The animators are giving the team at Mob Psycho 100 a small run for their money. Big smiles from me.

#2 - Do It Yourself!!

This show is just… lovely. I'm not even gonna parse it; I'll just say that this show creates a vision of the world that I’d like to live in, and makes me calm, happy, and well-rested. Even Budddha looks at Serufu's chill and says, “damn, I need to up my game.” Just wonderful all around.

#3 - Chainsaw Man

If you had just described Chainsaw Man to me, I'd never have watched it. Who needs another edgelord demon hunter anime? Ugh. Then I watched it, and it's masterful. Pochita? Feels. Himeno? Feels. It’s the best twist on “nothing matters, so everything matters” I’ve seen in a while.

A little conundrum.

(Warning: discussion of leg injury)

As of right now I am currently on leave from work due to what I originally thought was just a sprained ankle. The ankle had been swollen for weeks despite my attempts at getting it under control. I resorted to wearing a brace I got from the local pharmacy as well as taking anti-inflammatories to try and reduce the swelling. Wednesday 10/26 I was at my job per usual but had to leave early. I was in agony as the pain not only increased a lot more then previous days, but had spread to more of my ankle and the pain went as high as my knee.

I left work and went to urgent care to see what exactly is going on. To my dismay I have a small chunk of bone free floating within my ankle. There's speculation that it could have been a bone spur having broken off, or a "free floating" bone that would go away in a few weeks time. In short there is something that isn't supposed to be there in my ankle. I'm waiting to talk to a specialist about my situation and what options I have.

In the meantime I'm in an out of pain that ranges from tolerable to not so much. All I can do is wear the boot they gave me and to stay off my leg as best I can. At this point I'm laughing like a loonatic due to the fact that every time I go to the hospital for my leg it is always my left. At least this time I didn't have Helga the nurse twisting my leg around to get x-rays of my knee. That and the staff had nicknames for me. I was called either "hobble-long" or "foot loose". Not to mention the natural height jokes since the boot makes me an inch taller. My kudos to the hospital staff for their sense of humor, I enjoyed it.

In short my health is up and down depending on my leg but the rest of me is just tired lol.

Like OG Fallout? Play Pathologic!

I've been a fan of various things for literal decades now, but not really participated in any fandom communities until literally this year. I've just been making cosplays, watching videos, drawing fanart and writing fan theories / fiction in my own time. So the very heated aspects of fandom flew me by until now ^^' I do completely get the more angry fellow FNV fans for what Bethesda has done to Fallout (regarding all entries after FNV), and some of the aspects I see people praising most about OG Fallout and FNV are mainly the roleplaying, writing, and bleak setting / vibe.

And to that I can't help but go "Have you heard of our Lord and Saviour Icepick Lodge?"

Pathologic classic HD and Pathologic 2 are the closest games (in my opinion) that capture the same aspects of OG Fallout and FNV the more angry fans feel they've lost.

You play as one of three healers in an isolated Russian town ravaged by plague. This is going to be more of a ramble of me gushing about various aspects of the game, so I've included a less popular review (love this guy's stuff) to more concisely discuss the game in a more structured way and give an accurate picture of gameplay (which I only really discuss in terms of combat, which is frankly a really small part of it compared to the resource and survival stat management, semi-present fast-travel (at a cost, which changes as circumstances get worse and forces the player to choose between loss of time, energy, money, or risk of infection, when deciding how to get from a to b by forcing players to only fast travel between certain points if they have the right resources, or walk through infected or ransacked districts).

Never before have I sympathised so much with a certified twat (The Bachelor), or been so genuinely excited to discover my character's bf-turned-bitter enemy isn't dead but finally taking a nap.

Admittedly, Classic HD is more linear but that doesn't detract from the story for me, but I definitely think 2 actualises the player freedom classic HD pretended to have.

Also both soundtracks are bangers, but quite different (tribal electronica versus shamanistic horror).

An aspect of gameplay that took a hot minute to learn but is very engaging is the hobo economy bartering system, which subtly changes as time goes by. Different resources such as medicine (which are obviously used up a lot in a plague) become more scarce and expensive. As people get more desperate for essentials like food, they start trading more valuable items like jewellery for it. Kids want seemingly valueless things like marbles and nuts for very valuable items (food and meds - yeah, besides the pharmacies, children carry the most drugs and knives; take that as you will). Inflation goes through the roof, money is no longer accepted in some shops later on. The economy is extremely dynamic, but not overly difficult to navigate so forces the player to adapt alongside it. You can never be certain what resources will be accessible the next day, which further makes when and where you decide to use what resources you have on others an engaging moral and practical decision. Unscripted, might I add!

And if you don't stay on top of your stats and resources (which is very easy to do) you end up in binds like this:

The diagnostic and treatment system is also fairly intuitive, in that there are humor-specific tinctures, and others that can be used to treat two different humors. The more resources you use trying to diagnose where the infection has settled, the more pain you'll caused the patient, which you can lower (to prevent death) by using vials or morphine. Accurate diagnosis is important to avoid wasting resources by using the wrong antibiotics (which is less effective). You can't be in two places at once, so every patient you treat is a drain on time and resources you could be using somewhere else. Sometimes it's better to let a patient be if the risk of death is too high for your treatment to have a worthwhile impact on their chances for survival.

Given how stretched thin your time and resources always are, even if the opportunity for tender downtime catching up with old friends arises it is all to easy to pass up because you're too busy. A cruel reality most people face these days irl. What's more, if you happen to die before deciding to go to this meetup, there is a chance that Mark Immortal will tie your character's hands behind their back which then prevents you from being able to hug you friends when you meet them.

Oh yeah, forgot to say but death has permanent consequences across all saves so reloading to before you died doesn't undo any penalty Mark curses you with unless you start a whole new run. Early on, you may be asked to help with a task which ends up not helping in the way expected (to help solve Burakh's father's murder or to help cure the plague) but does act as a small tutorial on how to listen / look for herbs you can use in remedies. You still feel irritated that a child wasted your time / was just playing with you, at least initially, so you learn to really consider what's worth chasing up and what might be a waste of time / red herring when deciding what trails in your mind map task menu to chase up. Especially since if you don't pursue them, they WILL happen without you and the consequences of your intervention or not remain uncertain until they crop back up in unexpected ways.

Admitedly, the endings in 2 are binary (though what you do in the wider world and story do effect the ending / what happens to specific characters) which I found very disappointing, especially given how much less effort it takes to do one over the other, like the game is encouraging you to pick the diurnal ending. The game is also a bit janky, but no moreso than FNV. Combat is not satisfying mechanically, especially if you opt for using guns, though that's kind of the point. You're a doctor (admittedly Artemy was a military medic, so he has some combat training, but still). Though sometimes it can seem (but isn't) unavoidable in the early game when you're public enemy number one. The combat feels like if OV Fallout's combat was in first person.

There aren't technically "factions" per se, but rather bodies of power in the town the approach both its running and the crisis at hand from different angles. To be honest, I completely sidestepped the Saborovs for my first two playthroughs entirely. Bad Grief says I'm a fool to try and clear my name to the man who effectively runs the police force? Sure! Unless you take interest in investigating your father's death, or frequently save babies (long story), I didn't cross their path except in the town hall meeting. Which is a shame, but honestly the other families interested me more. The Kains have a lot going on and are the most philosophically driven family both in their architectural choices and in how they utilize the polyhedron. The Kains and the Olgimskies are more interlinked than the Saborovs are with anyone, especially regarding the town's children and their seperate factions (Notkin's Soul-and-a-halves and Khan's Dogheads, whom you'll likely encounter early on to help settle some gang warfare). In fact the town children functionally operate a seperate society divided between the town and the polyhedron.

I quite like the fact that the Olgymskies (responsible for the town's main / only industry of slaughterhouses, which repeatedly overlap with the older practice of bull worship and sacrifice by The Kin - wait, I haven't even mentioned them yet wtf) aren't just treated as evil robber barons (though Big Vlad absolutely partakes in corruption and prioritising the health of his children over the town / his worker, especially when investigating The Termitary and the circumstances around its closure), but people navigating stopping the spread of plague while still trying to meet the very real problem of food scarcity now that the Town's been effectively cut off from the rest of the world and their lifeline industry has been halted.

Something I really appreciate is that they show the children have agency and act by their own judgement, and that the adults of the town aren't inherently wiser. Early on in the game the leaders of the town main child gangs will go in search of a way to help stop the plague's spread and WILL get infected unless you intervene. They also keep track of the plague's spread, for their own sake but the player can take head of what they learn to plan their routes through the town ahead of time. They also aren't treated like untouchable saints either. Death is very much a reality for EVERY character, no matter how young, both by natural and unnatural causes from the get-go. There are several occasions where the player character will be taught by child characters, such as Sticky, about how to survive in ways they've had to as orphans. I also love how the main child factions have their own distinct philosophies that help (alongside more specific characters that play carer / leadership roles outside of the Doghead and Soul-and-a-half factions, like Capella and Maria Kaina) inform your late-game decisions, since the children are very much the town's future, and how you endorse them will inform how the town operates going forward. I especially love the dogheads, and how they see themselves as not quite fully human yet. Striving for humanity and to be better, such as the utopian future promised by their home The Polyhedron. Meanwhile Notkin's soul-and-a-halves are far more grounded in the here and now, and the fact we need to rely on each other (and our animal companions) to be whole. The two aren't a dichotomy either and work together on a few occasions since, at the end of the day, surviving the plague is a shared goal.

Good luck trying to save everyone! It is genuinely difficult and just deciding who to use resources on and choosing what to use resources for actively effect the story and roleplaying, not just dialogue. Supplies are limited and sometimes it's better to focus on self-preservation just to live another day because it's better others die than the town to go without a doctor. The game mocks and derides players who engage in combat, but you're never barred from it and there are very good reasons to engage in it (obtaining more medical supplies to keep people alive, saving babies from infected buildings, self-defence, protecting people who would otherwise be wrongfully executed, etc.)

I think it's important to seek out the good that still exists in the world rather than stew over the bad. Ironic, I know, given I'm recommending a bleak tragedy of a game / story, but my point that it's good still stands.

So yeah, if you're a disgruntled Fallout fan please give Pathologic (especially Pathologic 2) a shot. I really think you'll like it!
