These past months I’ve not been dead, but rather multitasking (making author’s copies of books I’ve bound previously to send a box of them to the US, experiencing a severe depressive episode, and also, working on this!). And now: Behold, the best fucking thing I’ve made in my life so far! ✨

These two books are basically step-fanfiction, or maybe fanfiction times two, seeing as it's the story (co-athored by my darling spouse and I) featuring NPCs from our long and passionate TTRPG campaign (played in the setting of Tessa Gratton’s United States of Asgard). Do not be fooled by the books’ papery appearance, they are primarily made from my heart’s blood and tears.

🌟 The story takes place in 6 (ish) locations over the course of a year (and that year is 2000, which is why people are still into paper maps), with one of the protagonists being very fond of various maps and the other keeping his notes in a Pigpen-style cypher, which informed a lot of design decisions. The constellation (featured on the cover and on the title page) is formed of all the mentioned locations as marked on the road map (which I stitched from two pictures and painstakingly edited all the state names, some borders etc etc to replace the actual US names with the ones Tessa mentioned in her books and some that we came up with as the need arose). Every chapter starts with an additional map, marking the location and date, and with coded (and decoded) prompts from the Star-Crossed TTRPG that we used for inspiration.

🌟 It’s a bit of a tradition that spouse and I use different fonts when writing together, with their usual font being Arial and mine (surprising absolutely no one) Georgia, but for this I wanted a more matching pair of sans/serif fonts, so the body text fonts are DejaVu Condensed.

🌟 The title page illustration is by the fantastic @erebus0dora (my request was basically that I wanted it to look like one of the Bridgerton promo posters but less glossy, and oh, they delivered! The Major & I (referencing, of course, The Duke & I) is a joke name for the hypothetical crack version of this book where every chapter ends with “And then they fucked.”) When we finish the definitive edition (with many deleted scenes and other bonus content), it is also going to be on the dust jacket.

🌟 All additional illustrations are ephemera that I made for the story, added as extra-illustrations in my copy, and as scanned images in the spouse’s copy.

🌟 The bookmark charms are actual (plot relevant, of course) apricot pits, sanded, polished and waxed by hand.

I stayed away from Link Click in order to avoid any spoiler, to the point I only discovered today that episode 1 of the Yingdu chapter was released last friday.

There is a long frame by frame rewatch already waiting for me but, at this moment, I only want to focus on this frame in the opening:

I don't know if anyone has already done it but I've cracked the code and I wish to share it with you.

Yes, that is a proper code and is fully decipherable, if you want to solve it yourself I'll share some hints on how to do it, otherwise you can just skip to the actual message section down below.

HOW TO DECIPHER THE CODE, step by step

The message is in English, lucky for us non-Chinese viewers;

2. the code uses a substitution cipher, which means every symbol corresponds to a specific letter and that letter only.

With these two clues alone I think you can already approach the message, but if you wish for more hints, here they are:

3. I could think of two different ways to decipher the code, one takes longer but it requires only one cipher; the other one is easier but there is a twist to keep in mind.

4. The longer method consists of classical substitution cipher solving approach: symbols, or set of symbols, that occurs more often in the message can be correlated with letters (E, T, ...) or words (THE, AND, ...) that occurs more often in the english language.

5. The easier way is to recognise that the symbols belong to a well known cipher: the pigpin cipher! You can google it, see the pic below

Wait what?! That is not a solution! True, and that is the twist: pigpen alone doesn't solve the code, you need one more step, another substitution cipher.

THE BLABBERING

Already many interesting things everywhere!

This message implies the existence of 5+ people: the writer of the message; the target of the message; the hired detective; the "He" mentioned in the third paragraph; the "all potential" trouble igniters (at least 2, I'd say) that should be eliminated. The blond woman seems to be the target, since the message is under her cup of tea; Liu Xiao could be the detective but I bet he is the "He"; the trouble igniters are definitely Lu Guang, Cheng Xiaoshi and the whole gang. The other two characters are way less obvious, we can only assume their identity based on which one is missing; I can only speculate that Vein could be the detective, but he could also be your basic assassin; Finally, Xia Fei could be the writer of the message, if we accept the idea that he and the woman might be somehow blood related.

Then, we have the proper content of the message: a burning forest is mentioned and we know from S2 that a forest appears in Lu Guang's memory of CXS dying (and in the opening as well). Why so much emphasys is placed on the forest?

The next sentence "determined to prevent such traged(y)" might be the most revealing: what is the tragedy? The forest on fire or something else? If it's the former, how can the fire be prevented it it has already happened? Either, they dive back in the past and change it, which we know is no-go option, or the forest on fire was a vision from the future and there is someone (Liu Xiao?) with the ability to either foresee or actually dive in the future, completing the past, present and future pattern.

And this is all coming from just one frame. One Frame.

can you tell me what the hell is going on with the waffle house order language. does linguistics actually work here i mean its all just a cipher for various nouns but like are there affixes? other things i don't remember since this isn't my field? also i really want to know if the waffle house order code has had any noticeable linguistic evolution or anything like that. from what i can tell its like some insane pigpen cipher on the plate

i'd have to look up old menus for any kind of developmental analysis but i think it's just a straightforward shorthand, no other grammatical features in play. it's not even a real cipher since there's not key-based encryption.

(for the unaware: waffle house, the american restaurant chain, has a famous system of ordering hash browns. the complexity is mostly introduced by people's tastes.)

Code solving process for the Link Click Yingdu Chapter opening.

There’s plenty more to solve in the OP but I recognized the pigpen cipher so I started here. Wasn’t expecting it to be multi step but it wasn’t too bad figuring out the second one. I taught code solving when I had forensics last year so I love this stuff.

Steps:

1) Solve pigpen cipher (This would have been impossible if I didnt already know this one but its pretty common)

2) Find most common words and compare to common words known

3) Single letter has to be A or I

4) Try different 3 letter words until it makes sense

5) Write out alphabet and confirmed letters

6) Fill in alphabet with missing letters

7) Solve/Fill in

[The Eye] Link Click Yingdu OP Analysis

In the first scene we can see lu guang being seperated in two, his past which is in color and he himself who is in grey. This is mainly a visual thing but can also symbolize the change in his soul after all the dives, especially his blood tainted hand which is likely left from cheng xiaoshis blood when he held him (though lu guang playing a role in one of his death is possible.

in this opening scene we also see this butterfly which could be refrencing the butterfly effect

• Black and white butterflies symbolize balance and harmony

• They often represent transformation and new beginnings

• Seeing a black and white butterfly might be a sign of spiritual growth

• These butterflies can remind us to embrace both light and dark aspects of life

one i find especially interesting is the egyptian myth tied to feathers. In ancient Egypt, the white feather represented truth and judgment. It was believed that, when a person died, they faced tests to gain entry into the afterlife. One test involved weighing the person’s heart against the white feather of the goddess Ma’at. If the heart weighed more than the feather, the person was found to be unworthy, and they would be sent into darkness. Tying to a lot of the divine symbolism we've gotten in the villain chara pvs such as liu xiaos.

the fox could refer to the twins or perhaps vein or xiafei since we dont know their animals yet. this feels like it could explain how these powers even came to be, a way to prevent tragedy? to investigate as shiguang does? the last paragraph seems to be right up liu xiaos alley of thinking.

these bells and clock actually corelate as 3 bells is 9 30 in a ships bell, the time on the clock. the lyrics in the scene befire the bells appears also refrences the ringing of bells and 9pm (which would be two bells) im not exactly sure on this significance but ig we'll see.

now thats it for the hidden things. there are skme more obvious concerns such as

yk. vein pointing a gun at lu guang. now while this could be the case i actually think this is refrencing one of cheng xiaoshis deaths, by veins hand. this is because all the other scenes seem to point through lu guang shifting through different timelines in a montage such as the ones in the mvs.

this ties to why hes crying later on in the basketball court in this montage (not like he doesnt have a million reasons to cry already) also, one of the scenes flashing here seem to tie back to that divinity them with the lighting

these all contain actual scenes from the show so the following montage is of the past from lgs prespective.

additional details i ran out of images to show is lu guang coming into color when held by cheng xiaoshi, the shakespheres sonnets making a return and vein watching everyone, as well as the woman from the newspaper in the poster making an apperance. also lg and vein in the same room but its still grey lg. are they connected??

DD Pines boys and languages

I think they would all learn languages pretty easily, but they'd have varied interests and some would be easier to each one.

Ford: Romantic languages would be his jam. Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian. Also German and Japanese. He'd be fluent in all of them except the latter two. Following most Ford VS Spanish headcannons, he'd learn Castellano because it's more proper, and also generally what they teach in books/school. He also knows a fair amount of Codes and ciphers, but hadn't kept up on them since he doesn't really have a need. He knows Bill's cipher very well though and incorporates it into his church writings.

Stan: Really good at the harder languages. They just come naturally to him. Russian, Polish, Norwegian, Gaelic, Navajo and a bunch of alien languages that he actually picked up REALLY easily. Ford would have struggled with these. He also knows quite a bit of different ciphers because they're EVERYWHERE. He knows Bill's Cipher, plus PigPen, Atbash, Vigenere and Caesar. He kept up with Morse code and ALSO speaks spanish, but his is hodgepodge of dialects because of the different places he's been. No one can place his accent. There's Mexican, Chilean, and Cuban Spanish in there. Most spanish speakers have a hard time understanding him unless he's swearing. XD

Shermie: Really good at math and coding languages as well as asian languages, given where a lot of his coworkers are from. Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Telugu, Mandarin and Thai. He also knows alot of German, though he's not fluent. Also very good with Ciphers and Runes.

This looks like it could be MCR in some kind of code, like almost a pigpen cipher but not quite. The second and third symbols are very similar to a C and an R. I'm feeling like this might be a cipher key to solving something in the future?

And, by proxy, a reminder that languages are a way of communicating one information via different methods. Sign language uses hand gestures and movements, verbal languages take speech, there's several real-life whistling languages, there's the Morse code, there's binary and all sorts of numeral systems, there's the semaphore, ciphers like the "dancing men" or pigpen, there's the heraldics of Europe, there's the language of flower bouquets and even secret calligraphy languages that hide second layer meanings in the way the letters of a word are written down to the amount of decorative loops and tilt.

Language is a magical thing in a way that anything can be considered language, once there's a system of decoding it. Language could be a ruler with each mark assigned to a letter, used for measuring specific sticks the length of which encode the meaning of the message.

There's so many possibilities. I'm going crazy over them.
