"We'll all go and be fucking wombles, aye?"
Tumblr media
Character Name: Declan Buchanan
Fandom: @realmspod, Liminal London campaigns [Podcast]
Played By: Pip Gladwin
Yarn Used: Hair: CraftSmart Value - Taupe Skin: CraftSmart Value - Mushroom Antlers: CraftSmart Value - Coffee Shirt: CraftSmart Value - Grey Ombre Trousers/Soles: CraftSmart Value - Wine Shoes/Belt: CraftSmart Value - Dark Chocolate
Basic pattern here.
Tumblr media
Everybody’s favorite pathetic wet cat of a man depressed alcoholic fae-cursed private investigator! While I was frantically crocheting Monty to get him ready in time to hug him when he really needed it, I was not expecting Declan to need the hugs more. Damn the shiny math rocks, but holy hell, what a way to play that. Anyway, before Series 5 drops and we find out who’s going to destroy this man first, Zack or Pip, I wanted to get him done. (And I did - with a whole four days to spare! Go me!) He varies from the basic pattern as follows:
Shoes: Hey, I remembered the different colored soles again! Declan is described as tall and thin, so like with Mini, I did another round of decrease at R7 of both shoes (sc in first 7 st, inv dec 3 times, sc in next 2 sts, join) to make his legs twelve stitches around. I then did R8 as straight stitching with the shoe color before I switched to the trousers. (The other thing I did, which I should have been doing long ago, was the round before I changed color, I did the sl st to join in the color of the next row.)
Trousers: Again, tall, thin Declan. Mostly I worked his legs the same as usual, just in rounds of twelve instead of fifteen, but I also made them longer, so they went from R9 (the hdc row for hem) to R34 before I joined them together. I only used a chain of three to connect his legs, too, giving his waist a circumference of 30 stitches as opposed to the usual 38. For the belt, I went five rows above the…well…groin, switched to the belt color, and did a round of fpdc around the round two below like I did with the hem of Joseph’s hoodie. Then I switched back to the trousers color and did a round of sc in the back loop of the fpdc and front loop of the last round of trousers. For the belt loops, every four or five stitches I inserted the hook into the row below the belt, drew up a loop, and then pulled the next stitch through both that loop and the loop already on the hook. (I was kind of pleased with that, actually.)
Shirt: Hey, kids, know what the difference between variegated, self-striping, and ombre is? Ombres go FOR-FUCKING-EVER before they change color! (: Oh, well, it worked out, I guess. I didn’t really vary him all that much here except that I just went straight up with rounds of 30 (and also made his torso a bit longer) before decreasing at the shoulders.
Head: I frogged it. Several times, actually. I wasn’t happy with my stitches and I definitely wasn’t happy with my initial color choices and I also did what I consider the worst attempt at “a sort of perpetual five o’clock shadow” in the history of crochet, and the second time I accidentally added an extra round of increases and several extra rounds in between the increases and decreases - as I put it in the official Realms of Peril & Glory Discord, “He head too big for he got damn he” (remember this meme, guys?) - but eventually I got it right. (Visit his page on my website to see rejected progress pics.) I added one (1) extra round between increase and decrease in the final version as well to give him a slightly longer face, and I think it worked. For the five o’clock shadow, I just used the hair color for part of his face in a pattern that looked and felt right to me, leaving space for the mouth. Once again, I used safety eyes; the pack I bought has basically clear eyes and a bunch of discs you can put behind them to customize the colors, so I decided to give him pink eyes like they’re bloodshot.
Tumblr media
Hair: I tried a new technique here. For each stitch beyond the hairline, I did a two-strand puff stitch (insert hook in next st, yo, draw up loop, yo, insert hook in same st, yo, draw up loop, yo, draw through all loops on hook), and I really like the effect!
Arms: There was just enough of the next color in the ombre to make it almost all the way up both arms and I’m trying not to be annoyed about it. Anyway, I started his arms on a base of four sc instead of five, then otherwise proceeded the same way I did for Joseph and Monty’s except that I made them longer (29 rounds total, I believe).
Tumblr media
Antlers: I can’t share the exact pattern here because it’s copyrighted, but I used the pattern for jackalope antlers in Crochet Creatures of Myth and Legend by Megan Lapp (and if you click that link, check out her other patterns - they look AMAZING and if I wasn’t already approaching PELE I would be buying some of those). Declan usually grinds them off as soon as he wakes up, so this is just-woke-up-from-a-nap-and-can’t-find-his-angle-grinder-yet Deccy Boi.

Audio drama Sunday Again Again
OK I have been sick with a series of tiresome and occasionally unpleasantly explosive winter illnesses recently so haven't audiodrama Sunday'd for a while. Whilst trying to recover, I have been listening to:
Pasithea Powder - Now in my top ten Disaster Sapphic Podcasts along with Once Upon a Wasteland. Cinematically written slow burn with complex political storylines. Department of Variance of Somewhere Ohio - Also in my top ten Disaster Sapphic Podcasts, love a road trip through an apocalyptic dreamscape.
Tumblr media
Love Talker - Horrific and intense, powerfully written, equally powerfully scored, oh boy howdy mind the content warnings. Red Valley - The fastest way to endear me to your near-present sci-fi narrative is to have a banger of an in-world power metal track.
Guess who's back, back again (new series of podcasts I like!):
Victoriocity - Strong start. I am so here for Pip Gladwin's Victorian Batman…. Tell no Tales - I cannot tell you how delighted I was when I realised they were going to Orkney, also LEO WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH FRANK HE IS A BADUN.
Have a good week!

RPGaDay2024 continues!
I most recently played @morkborg in a home game run by the incomparable Pip Gladwin. The OTT grimness of the setting and the brilliantly gross random tables are just fantastic.
Tumblr media
I most frequently play 13th Age as part of our long running Vael campaign on @realmspod. It lets me play the sweet little necromancer of my dreams and makes for high-octane high-powered combat.

“...but you taught me a lot about being human.”
Tumblr media
Character Name: Joseph Teller, f/k/a Zenith, a/k/a “The Grey Boy in the Grey Box”
Fandom: Chapter & Multiverse, “Masks” Campaign 1 [Podcast]
Played By: Pip Gladwin
Yarn Used:     Skin: CraftSmart Value - Peach     Hair: CraftSmart Value - Taupe     Shirt: CraftSmart Value - Grey     Trousers: CraftSmart Value - Charcoal     Shoes: CraftSmart Value - Dark Chocolate     Soles: CraftSmart Value - Cream     Eyes/Mouth: DMC #413
Basic pattern here.
Tumblr media
Joseph was my first blorbo, and really, he was what I used to create the pattern in the first place. I know I made a few mistakes with him, and if I do a second one I’ll do him better, but for a first attempt, he came out pretty good!
Tumblr media
I wanted to do him in his “civilian” guise rather than his heroic one. Joseph is always described, outside of his costume, as wearing, essentially, a grey hoodie and grey sweatpants, so I took that and ran with it. He varies from the “base” pattern as follows:
Shoes: I gave Joseph, essentially, a pair of Converses. The soles of his shoes, up to R3, are in cream; the shoes themselves (up to R7) are Dark Chocolate.
Trousers: I was expressly trying to keep these outfits from looking like they were constructed all of a piece as much as possible - I wanted it to look three-dimensional, in essence - so Joseph’s trouser legs come down over the tops of his shoes. To do this, for round 8, switch to trouser colors (in this case Charcoal), ch 2, hdc in front loop of each st around, then join with sl st. Continue the rest of the legs as normal.
Shirt: Because Joseph is wearing a hoodie, I figured it came down a little ways past his waistband. To make the shirt as part of the body, continue with the pants color for the pattern up to R35, and then:      R36: Switch to shirt color. Ch 1, fpdc in each around each st in row 34 around, sl st in first fpdc (38 fpdc).      R37: Ch 2, hdc through back loop of fpdc and front loop of sc from row 35 around, sl st in first hdc (38 hdc).      R38-52: Continue as in base pattern.      R53: Switch to skin color. Ch 1, sc in back loop of each st around, sl st in first st (18 sc).      R54-59: Continue as in base pattern.
Hair: Joseph is described as a “tiny soldier”, so I decided he would have a buzz cut, or a very close-shaved head. (Also, it was the easiest way to do it for my first time through). I began the hair with R60 with the last 18 stitches of the round, then added 1 st on each end to bring the hairline closer to the front through R70. Starting with R71, use the hair color exclusively.
Arms: In order to make Joseph’s long sleeves, I switched to the same color as the rest of the shirt starting with R10:      R10: Ch 2, hdc in front loop of each sc around, sl st in first hdc (12 hdc).      R11: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each hdc around, sl st in first sc (12 sc).      R12-25: Continue as in base pattern.
Hood: I’m not actually sure I can completely describe how I did the hood; it was early in the morning and I was improvising hastily because I wanted him finished that day. Essentially, I stitched a row of sc in the front loop of the collar of his shirt, then played around with increases and extended stitches until it looked sort of like a hood. (It does not fit over his head.) The drawstrings are simply short chains at either end of the final row.

1. A crocheted doll representing Joseph Teller, a character from Chapter and Multiverse. Joseph is a white-skinned man in a grey shirt, dark grey pants, and brown shoes with light blond hair that blends into his skin. He has grey eyes and a grey mouth set in a straight line. He stands on a wooden rocking chair.
2. The same doll shown from the side, revealing a grey hood hanging down his back.
3. A close-up of Joseph’s face. The “drawstring” of his hoodie is more clearly visible, as is the uneven stitching of his face.

A Slapdash Review: Wooden Overcoats s4 e10 Live
Firstly, audio was super quiet despite my computer volume being up to full blast; what gives, King’s Place? Hm. And the stream cut out in the middle of the Georgie/Jennifer scene; boo upon that tech failure. I had to refresh the page and sign in all over again before the show went on.
But still!! Seeing everyone was so beautiful!! DKB all snazzy in his red jacket, Ciara in her gorgeous bright yellow floral blouse, Tom wearing that nice dark purple sweater under his black blazer etc. [More under the cut.]
Somewhat to my disappointment, at no point was the opportunity taken to do a live full-on-mouth kiss in any of the places we could have had one; however I appreciate immensely the kiss-on-temple between the Mayor and Wavering :D and the little substitute dialogue in place of him phoning his twin! “You’ve always been right honorable to me.” ^________^ oh my sweet, dear hearts.
Annnnd.... :3333 the Look with a capital L :3333333 between Beth and Tom after “Wouldn’t you say.... Eric?” Delicious, delicious, what a feast, utterly glorious! Also I just want to say how delightful Beth’s expressions were throughout the whole evening. Complete perfection. (Were her boots flat or heeled? Is she genuinely just that stunningly tall? I kept trying to check the heels but I never quite could make up my mind.)
Felix Trench’s Face gets its own paragraph because my god. My. God. I realize those of you who’ve been watching the live streams all along probably knew about how wonderful that face of his is, and all the magnificent things it can do, but like!!!! I was Not prepared!!!!!!! Sir you are glorious and also are we the same height? 5′5″? Are we both short kings?? Come and join me for a pint then, come on! (well, mine’s a pint of soda; I don’t drink alcohol)
Emily Stride read such a wonderful Madeleine, and I had no idea it was her til they did the credits at the end. She did her own squeaks and all!! So lovely!! Not to mention the immense satisfaction of hearing her as Marlene in person, ahha ^_^ “Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right...” (And the rest of the cast acting as said clowns/jokers, save Tom of course) Superb indeed!
Pip Gladwin :D :D :D :D the man’s a treasure!! Mime-waving the cigar with Rudyard and Wavering; bouncing (well, jumping) in the ‘bouncy castle’ for all he was worth!! And then Ciara joining in and aaaah it was perfect ^_^ And cueing the audience to stop cheering and let him actually shout “We’re a town!” before moving back from the mic so we could continue said cheering along with the others onstage.... beautiful. ^_^
Everyone dancing to the disco :DDDDDD Beth just kinda shaking her fists like she had invisible maracas! And Tom joining in with her!! A dance at last for my Antigone, glory be and the saints be praised :33333333
LIVE HUGS LIVE HUGS LIVE HUGS YESSSSS ^_^ and live handshake for Rudyard and Eric!! ANd a REAL BOX OF MEMENTO MORI :O I was wondering about that red rectangle under Rudyard’s seat the whole time, and then that’s what it was and I was thrilled! Did I hear right at the end there- was that a fan-made thing?? I do hope so; that makes it even better!
Also can someone reply to this and give me the name of the actress who appeared as Marjorie and Jennifer, and Miss Scruple, and briefly Vivienne Templar? Because she was utterly marvelous! So was the actress appearing as Zoe, which, my word, what a great performance :D I loved that they gave her lines in the backstory sequence as well! I’ll have to go back and watch it all over again, I suppose. I know their names were read in the end credits along with everyone else, but I wasn’t watching alone- had a friend sitting with me here in my dining room- and I think we were too busy exclaiming about Emily not being Belinda, and we trampled aurally over some of the credits. Shame upon us.
Those are my thoughts just off the top of my head- I’m sure I’ll have more upon subsequent viewings. Bravi, bravi, bravissimi to everyone!!!
Edit: I did my sleuthing. Brava to Lucy Farrett as Marjorie/Jennifer/Miss Scruple/Lady Templar, and to Kudzayani Chiwawa as Zoe Adeyinka!!
