A list of excellent fiction podcasts that have no network (to my knowledge) and could use your support, all made by queer creators and featuring queer characters:
Care & Feeding of Werewolves (@careandfeedingofwerewolves) - the medical notes and adventures of a doctor for the paranormal community
Small Victories (@wgc-productions) - a slice of life dramedy about addition, recovery, and relationships
The Department of Variance of Somewhere, Ohio (@somewhereohio) - surreal/weird fiction following agents trapped in the building of their shady government bureau
Hello from the Hallowoods (@hellofromthehallowoods) - vignettes of a huge cast of characters interweave in a long-form narrative of queer survivors
Dragon Shanty (@dragonshantypod) - in the form of bedtime stories, two lighthouse keepers tell their history of magic and dragons
The Aberrant Report (@theaberrantreport) - a tape recorder-style murder investigation that delves into the supernatural
InCo (@itmeblog) - sci-fi micro-fiction following an information courier in the far future
Starfall (@starfallpod) - the fantasy adventures of a theater troupe that uses magic to create their performances
Neighbourly (@neighbourlypod) - weird/surreal fiction anthology about the secrets behind closed doors on a very strange street
The Night Post (that's us!) - a mystery/horror about queer survival and the realities of living with the natural and supernatural

Magnus Archives Relisten 11, MAG 11 Dreamer
If someone came to my place of work proclaiming they had a prophetic dream about my death I would simply believe them. RIP to Gertrude but I'm just built different ig.
MAG 11 analysis, spoilers ahead!
Facts: Statement of "Antonio Blake" regarding his dreams of Gertrude Robinson, Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute (Head Archivist is another odd and foreshadowing usage of proper nouns in the transcript). Statement given March 14th, 2015.
Statement Notes: Oliver I love you but I also hate you so so much.
It's so strange relistening to this statement. On my first listen, I was very sympathetic to "Antonio." He was this innocent man who suddenly developed psychic abilities that tormented him. Even in 121 when he describes what he did on the voyage to Point Nemo, he seems to be driven by fear and desperation. But knowing what happens after Point Nemo and who he becomes in the Eyepocalypse, I wonder how much influence the power of the End had on him. As Jon develops his abilities, he becomes less confident in "normal" social situations, but more confident and stronger in dangerous horror-based scenarios. This seems true with Blake/Banks as well. He's very nervous as his abilities are developing when he tries to talk to Gertrude or Jennifer from Grifter's Bone. As he becomes more attuned with his abilities and gives in to his desires, he becomes more powerful, shown when he is strong and devoid of emotion enough to kill the actual Dr. Pritchard. He becomes strongest when he "gives in" to the End, being most clear and charming as he gives his statement in 121 and the Coroner's Report in 168. Just being able to track this change so clearly from this first statement to the last speaks not only to Jonny Sims skills for character development, but also the power of the Entities to draw out the worst in a person.
Blake describes his dream world as an "overexposed" or "washed out" photograph. The fading imagery was very profound and strong to me. Death is a fear, a horror represented by the black tendrils, but also a simple force of nature, slowly sucking life and color from all things. Unstoppable.
I don't know why I'm harping on this, but I can't understand why Blake's dreams always begin at the top of Canary Wharf. Does that come up again in the show? Is it personally significant to Blake?
Character Notes: I already got into Blake, so my other main character concern for this episode is Gertrude.
Did she ever see this statement?
Did she simply miss it? Was she busy and didn't get a chance to look at it before it was too late? Did she read it and attempt to prepare? She was smart. She knew which statements were real and which weren't. She would have understood what Blake was capable of. Did she attempt to prepare and defend herself but just couldn't manage it? Did Elias hide it from her? Did she read it and just accept the inevitable?
But of course, I have to bring up the Graham mention. I always thought the Graham/Oliver ship was just a fun fan thing, but I didn't realize Oliver had broken up with a Graham in cannon. Moreover, I didn't realize that it was confirmed to be Graham Folger until reading about the Season 5 Q&A when working on this post.
This raises an interesting point about original Graham. Blake describes having a mental breakdown due to his job, and Amy Patel describes her office job degrading her mental health as well. Is there something about Graham that attracts people losing their minds in an office? While it could be something spooky, I do understand why people stuck in mind-numbing careers would be drawn to someone with the time and resources to explore what he actually wants to do with his life, rather than what he has to do.
Entity Alignment: This is very clearly an End episode. I very much believe that, while he may not be the most powerful or dangerous avatar in the series, Oliver Banks was one of the most deeply connected to his entity. His psyche, his spirit, and his physical body were all so entrenched in death. It's interesting that there is no "inciting incident" that causes Graham to become an avatar of the End, as usually there is one event that acts as the root of an avatar's development. You could possibly argue it was his mental health breakdown, but that seems unrelated to death or anything associated with the End.

Harlan Guthrie’s whole new sci-fi horror series Deviser goes live in three hours!
It’s a huge new step in audio drama, not only in horror that John Carpenter would be proud of and incredible sound design, but also trying to show that you can drop an entire short-form series for binging and have it do well.
As such, all of these first premiere downloads count! Let’s blow his expectations out of the water.
(Do check the content warnings; this show is a frighteningly good listen but also heavy on gore, à la Alien or The Thing).

I don't have the higher brain functions at the moment to go into as much detail as is deserved, but Deviser is INCREDIBLE. highly highly recommend listening to it if you're into horror of any kind, especially sci-fi horror. it's movie length if you listen to all seven episodes in one sitting, which was intentional - not necessary for enjoyment, but there's a good chance one you start listening you won't be able to stop
more posts to come I think, but just. just listen to it. trust me.

A Hi Nay Podcast Year - 2023
Tumblr media
At the beginning of 2023, I got a planner that said it'll be a "Great" Year. I had to cover it up - because the last time I had a planner claiming the year would be great... it was 2020. So I covered it with one of our stickers, making it read "It'll Be A Hi Nay Podcast Year". And it was!
Here were some Highlights for what was an absolutely jam-packed HI NAY YEAR!
Tumblr media
The Hi Nay Fundraiser
Though we didn't get to our full goal, we did get to our initial goal to keep the show going! We also got absolutely unbelievable support that we still don't know if we deserve, but we're grateful for nonetheless. Because of this fundraiser, we were able to provide honoraria to our performers and editors, as well as get to work on Act 3 of Hi Nay, which has grown much bigger than anticipated. Special thanks to Jesse Goodsell and Malaya, our top donors!
We also wanna thank our amazing P atreon supporters, who ensure we keep this show going until its planned ending!
Interviews
Tumblr media
We were able to chat with so many amazing people this year! Here's some of the shows that had Motzie on to chat about Hi Nay, horror, Filipino stories, and podcasting.
Radio Drama Revival
IndieAF Special: International Women’s Day
Ep. 387 - Motzie Dapul — Spooked!
The Skull Sessions - Hi Nay (Hello From The Hallowoods)
Conventions!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of the wonderful people over at the Canadian Podcast Awards, we were able to briefly table at TORONTO COMICON and FAN EXPO, and were able to have our very first live show at Fan Expo, all without paying a dime! Huge shoutout to the Canadian Podcast Awards for giving us indies the opportunity to do something so amazing!
The Podcast Awards!
Tumblr media
We got nominated in two categories: Fiction and Best Asian Hosted, and it was amazing! Fiction was tough since there were so many amazing titles, but in Best Asian Hosted we were just happy to lose to one of our favourite people in the audio/video medium - Sapphire Sandalo.
How is this list not done yet OH RIGHT
The Rusty Quill Network!
Tumblr media
It was truly life-changing to join RQ, given that the Magnus Archives is the reason Hi Nay exists, though we like to think our story has formed its own unique identity beyond our inspiration. Still, we're genuinely grateful and excited to do more with RQ and the other absolutely amazing shows in the network in 2024! Even before this, Motzie got to interview the Rusty Quill folks for Storytelling Podcast Week and befriended the wonderful Helen Gould. And most recently, the fantastic Alasdair Stuart agreed to voice one of our most beloved new characters - Detective Dooley - for our Pride Episode. Alasdair is a gem, and we're happy and grateful to have him on.
There's so much more to cover and we can't put it all in one post, but we'd like to reiterate:
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT! We truly want Hi Nay to grow as a podcast without losing what makes it special, and it's all thanks to you listeners that we're able to do that.
-
Before we go, we'd like to mention the following:
CareForGaza is a non-profit charity in aid of helping the needy families of Palestine. If you're able to help them and their cause, it would make a huge difference! Gaza eSims is a campaign to help people in Gaza to get connected to family as well as facilitate important communication for medical aid, etc. Since Tumblr hides posts with l inks, you can google them and find more information.
And as always - thank you, we love you, and Manigong Bagong Taon. Happy 2024 everyone.

mrrrrp..... rambling
i went from being super stoked for the magnus protocol, to now having those feelings die every week... the podcast has literally become (/continues to be) nearly impossible for me to listen and tbh it's upsetting. i was really, really hoping that the awful edits and distance of the camera/audio recorder would be like, a smalller bit, or at least not be half of every gd episode... but alas. it just gets fucking worse every week.
i want to know what's going on, and of course transcripts are there, but... i want to *listen* while i am cleaning at work. and it has hit the point that even in a quiet room with headphones in at FULL VOLUME i still cannot understand half of the episodes.... it's a fuckn bummer, man...
it's actually embarrassing how many listens i have given them bc i cant decipher the simplest of conversations... cuz it's definitely not due to wanting the content as greatly as tma. i just keep getting frustrated when trying to consume the content i i was loving at the start lmao and its disappointing
but ugh, i've literally been getting bummed abt it every week lmao. i thought maybe they'd have learned from the negative feedback that s5 Jared, (and even Michael, the Daisy's trunk clip, and audio withint he tunnels) caused because of the difficulty to listen, lol.
it's an AUDIO medium, RQ, pleeeeeeeeeease
pleeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaase make it listenable again jfc ughhhhh :/

I've been working on a new thing
Over the past few months I've really been getting into solo journaling games like Yourself by K-Ramstack or The Wretched by Chris Bissette. One of my favourites is Anamnesis by @goblinmixtape and published by Blinking Birch Games, who recently announced an Anamnesis Jam for projects inspired by the game, running from November until the end of January 2023. As it happened, I was inbetween creative projects and was looking for a project to make on stream. Soooooo...
youtube
I am turning a playthrough of Anamnesis into an audio drama, and I'm streaming the entire creative process, from playing the game through to scripting, to recording to editing to sound design and music, all on our Twitch channel. We stream every Monday and Wednesday from 8pm UK time.
At time of writing we've finished the playthrough of the game, and we're about to start the process of adapting it into an audio drama script. You can catch up on all of the streams so far on Youtube, where I've made a playlist of the stream VODs.
If you like The Tower, or anything Tin Can Audio has produced, and you're curious as to how we make things, this is a great opportunity to see the entire process, as well as some chill background listening!
Whatever comes out of this experiment will be available on our Bandcamp page sometime in February, as well as in our Rusty Quill Network feed Tin Can Audio Presents
