How to Choose the Right Repair Service for Your Google Pixel in Adelaide
Tumblr media
Your Google Pixel is more than just a phone; it’s a hub for your memories, communication, and daily tasks. When the unexpected happens, and your Pixel requires repair, finding the right service becomes paramount. In this blog post, we’ll explore key factors to consider when choosing a repair for your Google Pixel in Adelaide, ensuring a seamless and reliable resolution to your device woes.
Certification and Expertise:
Ensure that the phone repair service is certified and staffed with knowledgeable technicians. Google Certified Professionals bring expertise and a deep understanding of Pixel devices, ensuring that your phone is in capable hands.
Genuine Parts Guarantee:
Opt for a repair service that uses genuine, manufacturer-approved parts. Authentic components contribute to the optimal performance and longevity of your Pixel, avoiding potential issues associated with subpar substitutes.
Speed of Service:
Time is of the essence, and a reputable repair service understands the urgency of getting your Pixel back in your hands swiftly. Inquire about the turnaround time for common repairs to ensure minimal disruption to your daily life.
Transparency in Pricing:
A trustworthy repair service provides transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Request a detailed breakdown of costs before authorizing any repairs to avoid surprises on the final bill.
Warranty Coverage:
A reliable repair service stands by its work with warranty coverage. Inquire about the warranty period for both parts and labor, ensuring that you have recourse in case any issues arise post-repair.
Customer Reviews and Reputation:
Research the repair service’s reputation by reading customer reviews. Platforms like Google reviews, Yelp, or social media can provide insights into the experiences of others who have used the service.
Convenience and Accessibility:
Consider the convenience of the repair service’s location. A centrally located service may save you time and effort. Additionally, inquire about appointment availability or if they offer mail-in services for those unable to visit the physical location.
Diagnostic Services:
A thorough diagnostic before the repair is essential for identifying all issues with your Pixel. A service that offers comprehensive diagnostics can uncover hidden problems and ensure a more complete and effective repair.
Data Security Measures:
Your phone contains sensitive information, so choose a Google Pixel repair service that prioritizes data security. Inquire about their procedures for handling customer data and if they have safeguards in place to protect your personal information.

Periods; ft. Kenma Kozume (a sort of fluff)
It's that godforsaken time of the month again. The time for the curse that the gods have put upon your shoulders to come to life and drown you in misery and pain. Along with it came cramps, vanishing appetite that could come back and hit you with the force of a ten-wheeler truck, the mood swings, and more. So much more despair. Asides from the growing upset in your stomach, your boyfriend had been ignoring you all day and you could weep for his lack of attention which you badly need during your red days. You glare at the back of his head, willing him to turn towards you and see your diabolical expression. Instead, his focus never wavers from the plasma TV, hands darting back and forth on the controls with quick fingers. If only you could set things alight with your eyes, he'd be ashes along with the game he loves oh-so-much. Your stomach grumbles and your frown deepens into a scowl, "Hmph." You said defiantly, refusing to talk to Kenma who had ignored you first. Stomping from the living room towards the room you share, you lie down on the bed, the soothing feel of the mattress pressing against your back. You had your feet on the headboard, arms spread-eagled across the sheets as you fume silently. You could hear the sound effects of the game he's playing from the bedroom, each ping! of victory more annoying than the last. Feeling dejected by his lack of awareness towards you, you pout and sulk as he continues playing with his newly bought game which, apparently, is more important than you at the moment. Why would he stop playing for his girlfriend possessed by the spirit of a five-year-old denied of candies? He probably doesn't love you anymore. That cruel voice at the back of your head speaks and your face falls. You bite your lip and shake your head as if the action could banish the depressing thoughts from your mind. You sit up suddenly, a burst of willpower surging inside of you.
If he wasn't going to notice you, you'll just have to make him do so. _____________________________________
That plan was probably the stupidest thing you've ever thought of and you swore you lost at least ten IQ points trying to execute that properly. You fail, of course. You continue burning him with your eyes, while he continued to play, unaware of your black mood just lurking behind him. You suppress the urge of spiking a volleyball at the back of his head, your love for him the only thing keeping your fingers from twitching. You were so focused on his figure that you didn't notice it when the screen went black. He started putting away his console and turning the TV off. You snap back from your daze, a victorious smile on your lips as he walked towards you. Only to walk past you. "I'm going out," he says, his words wiping the grin off your face and you look at him in disbelief. He continues walking towards the bedroom, leaving you wondering if you just heard his words right. Silence consumes the entirety of the apartment. No words from him who was changing. No words from you who were frozen in the living room.
He gets out of the room, wearing faded jeans and a slightly scarlet sweatshirt replacing the black one he uses when he pulled off all-nighters or spent the day staring at pixels. He had his hair messily tied into an attempt of a bun, the disarray of it all making him look more handsome and you nearly forget that you were supposed to be mad at him.
"I'll be gone for an hour or so." He says, golden eyes staring at yours then turning away swiftly, grabbing his bag that hung on the hooks on the door and slinging it over his shoulder. And with that, he was gone with you gaping as he left. His first words in 7 hours were 'I'm going out'?! "What the fuck?!" You curse loudly, voice echoing across the empty place. _________________________________ Would burning his gaming console work? No, he'd hate you for that. No kisses for a week? Nope, you're too much of a simp to make that work. Deliberately tease him? Because that ended so well last time. You shuddered at the memory, burning hot pink at how it backfired. How about pranking him that you're breaking up with him? That might be fun... You hear the sound of keys turning and the door opening and the sound makes you stop pacing madly. You panic, not having finished your revenge plan yet so you wing it and try your luck. Unfortunately, you don't have any. Your cheeks turn red and you stammer an almost indecipherable babble, "I-I'm b-b-breakinhgh uff with youfsh," He raises an eyebrow, staring intently at your face, tracking every single flicker of emotion with cat-like intensity. "No." he replies as if giving an answer to a particularly easy question. He whips his head behind him as if glaring at someone. "Fuck you Kenma." You hear a familiar voice huff. Kuroo enters your line of sight, his arms dragged down by the weight of multiple paper bags. You swore you saw a plastic bag filled with your favorite treats along with the other stuff he's bought. Kenma doesn't turn to look at his friend, sighing instead, "I have Y/n to do that, so no thank you." he answers. He notices your questioning eyes, "I bumped into him and since I can't lift shit, I thought he might be useful for once." Irritation makes way into Kuroo's features as he drags everything into the living room, muttering profanities under his breath. "You have blackmail pictures!" Kuroo yells. Your boyfriend walks towards you, planting a kiss on your forehead, "Help me set up the living room so we can watch movies here, m'kay?"
Your eyes nearly bug out of your head at the sweet gesture and your emotions bubble up near the surface and tears glisten in your eyes. You nod, following him and helping him get the extra mattress to the living room. Both of you throw pillows and blankets over the bed that was placed right in front of the TV screen, the shopping bags right beside it and well within reach. He sits on cross-legged, head tilted sideways, eyes of liquid gold looking up at you like an invitation which you couldn't possibly decline. You give up on trying to hold grudges and relax against his warm embrace. You were sitting on him, legs wrapped around his back and you let your head rest on his shoulder as he runs his hands through your hair in a soothing, calming manner. A cough breaks the easy silence and you look up to see Kuroo backed into a corner. Heat rushes to your cheeks and you have been turned into a tomato. You hear Kenma's low growl and he grabs a pillow, never truly letting go of you even as he sends the pillow flying towards Kuroo's face. "Get the fuck out and shut the door." He groans to his friend who complains but obliges. You don't get off of his lap, seeing that he doesn't really mind having been seen at such an intimate position. He brings his face closer to yours, so close that your noses touch. "Well, we have the entire night to ourselves. We can do anything you want, pudding." He smiles, an affectionate smile he only ever saves for you and you cry, pulling him tighter and resting your head on his shoulder once more to try and hide your sniffles. "Why are you crying Y/n?" he asks calmly, already used to your mental breakdowns during your period. You scoff through your tears, "You kept ignoring me this morning and I was so angry and so hungry and so alone." "Then you finally look at me then announce that you're going out like... like, it was like you were leaving me." You knew the words were stupid and childish and petty but there was no stopping it now. "I thought you didn't love me anymore." Your voice breaks. "I love you, Y/n. Let's watch movies now, m'kay?" That was his reply and more tears follow. Kenma Kozume was just perfect. Despite his 'don't care' facade, when you're alone, he's sweet. He listens and doesn't get angry about your shifting moods. Even if you were acting unreasonable, just like now, he'll comfort you and hug you and spoil you with affection. You were an idiot to think he had stopped loving you. Because right now, you've never felt more loved than ever. "M'kay." You said softly. You move and face the TV screen, leaning against him as he turns the TV on and goes to Netflix. The show starts and you and he sit in silence. His arms wrapped around you in the dimness of the apartment.
Hmm... with him, periods don't seem that bad anymore.

Summary: Usopp moves to the city after a year since his mom died in a way to feel closer to her. There he looks for a roommate and finds none other than Zoro himself. what fate has in store for them is left for a later date lol
Roommates
Usopp . Zoro
It’s been almost a year since my mom died. She’s been sick for a long time, so I knew this was coming for some time now.
Even so, knowing didn’t stop it from hurting just as much.
Since her funeral, all I’ve done is coop myself up in our house. I’d probably turn into a hermit if it weren’t for my neighbor, Kaya. She came around whenever she had the chance.
That was nice of her considering what she has been going through…
But the more she worried about me, the guiltier I felt.
I know that she can't help but take care of people. Hell, It's why she’s been studying pharmaceutics, but I also know she can do so much more with her life. She could be some big-city doctor or researching to cure cancer!
Wouldn’t that be so much cooler than being stuck in a no-name city, too small to even afford more than the one clinic it has?
In any event, that’s only one of the reasons why I’ve decided to move away for a while. I think some time out of this house would do me some good.
The city that I’m moving to isn’t all that big and a bit further than I’d like it to be, but that’s the point of moving, right?
One way or another, I chose this city because my mom fell in love with it. She used to tell me about how, when she was young, she used to travel all over! She’d seen it all. Every tourist attraction and big-name city, but there was something about this city that just took her breath away. She told me that this place managed to calm her need to be constantly moving. This is also where she got pregnant with me then later she moved back to where she was raised and had me.
As much as she loved it there, she wanted me to go out on my own and find a place that would ‘sate my most wild urges and fuel my deepest desires,’ as cheese-ly as she put it.
At first, I thought she was joking.
I thought that she only liked that place because it’s where she met dad… It’s also why I hated this city.
My father was a coward that ran away as soon as my mom got sick. Though, she never blamed him for it. I never got to as her why, though. Years later, I did ask her if I was right. That she only romanticized this place because she fell in love there. However, she told me that he was only part of the reason why she loved this city so much, and that if I didn’t believe her then I should go find the depth of this city for myself.
I debated with myself for the longest time. Whether this was the right choice, or if I was ready to set foot in the place I used to loath so much. But being here now, I feel so much smaller than I thought I was. I’m nowhere near the heart of the city, but the sheer enormity for this place makes it feel like it’s trying to swallow me whole.
Sure, back home we had a lot of open fields and the horizon was always noticeable, but here the buildings towered over everything. It felt like a tsunami that threatened impact but never collided. The horizon was replaced by millions of stars that fell from the sky and sat just out of reach so that if you got too close thy’d turn into someone else’s day. Someone’s life.
There are so many people here that It almost made it feel lonely. Being surrounded by so many lives yet being so far from them. A mirage in a desert, one could call it. It promises life, but the closer you get the more you realize you could never get close enough.
I guess I was too much of a coward to be as alone as I felt when I first stepped foot here, though, I’ll keep telling myself it’s because the apartments here are too pricey and I only managed to land a job as a gas station attendant. Nevertheless now I’m sitting on the first floor of a fully furnished two-bedroom apartment checking a roommate wanted ad I posted earlier this week.
So far there have been only two people who wanted to move around this area, but one ghosted me after a few messages and the other ended up creeping me out so much that I had to report his account! I just hope the last person that answered my ad isn’t as much of a weirdo as the previous two.
Tumblr media
They seem to be a bit curt, but I shouldn’t get too picky. Rent for next month is gonna be due soon, and there is barely anyone who wants to live near this area as is!
I’m sure that they’re nicer in person! I shouldn’t worry. It’s just two days.
Two days.
-2 days later. Thursday 2:30 pm -
When I arrive at the coffee shop, I walk straight to the back of the line. It isn’t that long and I’ve got here thirty minutes early, so I should have time for a drink before they get here.
Should I get something for them too? No, that’d be weird, and it would probably get cold by the time they get here.
The person in front of the line leaves and we all step forward.
Shit.
Someone arrives and lines up behind me.
I didn’t ask for their name! I don’t even know if they’re a boy or a girl!
The next person leaves and we take another step forward.
Is it too late to ask? Would it be weird if I did?
Another step forward
What if they’re a girl? Would they feel uncomfortable living with a guy?
“-ir?”
I did put on the ad I was a dude though…
“-cuse me, sir?”
“Huh?” The barista’s voice brings me back to earth. “Oh, sorry!”
“It’s okay!” her chipper voice rung out, “could you repeat your order? I didn’t quite catch it.”
“O-oh, sorry. Sorry. I didn’t mean to talk out loud. I was lost in thought, I guess... haha ...” I looked up to their hanging menu, more so to look away from her than to figure out what I wanted.
After putting in my order I take a seat at the very back.
Ten minutes later my drink was ready and my anxiety was rising again.
What if they don’t come?
Five minutes later and I sent them a message to let them know I’m here.
Tumblr media
Maybe I could’ve phrased it better?
That sounded weird…?
God, is that a typo?
five minutes later
They haven’t answered, but that’s okay! It’s only been five minutes. Can’t expect them to be by their phone 24/7 right?
I’ll play some games on my phone to distract myself. Yeah, that’ll be fine. It’s fine.
I take a big gulp from my drink
I downloaded that new game. My hopes aren’t high for it, though. I found it via a random Facebook ad. Hopefully, it’s not one of those scams that say 90% of people can’t pass level five, but it’s only ‘cus no one lasts long enough to get to level five.
Hmmm… it seems plays well. A bit of a lag but the graphics are awesome! The old-style, pixelated art and bright, neon, solid colors give it a very retro vibe. The ads between levels kind of ruin the experience, though.
Guess they gotta make money somehow, right?
I wonder if they’ll go away if I turn off my data and Wi-Fi.
I shouldn’t just in case the person I’m meeting tries to reach me.
Could be fine for a round or two, though, I’d anxiously suffer through all of it.
I shouldn’t just in-
A sudden scraping sound from the chair opposite of me jolts me from my hypnotic state. “Hey,” a green-haired man in front of me mutteres before taking the seat he pulled out.
Taking in his form as he makes himself comfortable, my mind begins to race. Green dyed hair with roots of black hair showing. Fitted, sleeveless Nike shirt and black basketball shorts paired with a white pair of sneakers.
Oh, god. What’s with the green hair? He looks super buffed. Am I about to be mugged? No, that’s stupid. He wouldn’t have sat- in a cafe, really?
I quickly glance down at my phone for the time.
Exactly 3. Is he super punctual? More than likely a fluke, but impressive nonetheless. What if he’s a perfectionist?
My thoughts continue to swarm around my head, buzzing in an insatiable mob until a humming silence washes over me. Like one of those box televisions from back in the day. Not broadcasting anything in particular, stuck on a blue screen, droning on in silence.
The sudden stillness in my thoughts came so abruptly that it almost gave me whiplash. That aside, I need to focus now and answer him.
“Hey, sorry I didn’t ask for your name-” I left my statement open so that he could fill in the blank“-Zoro”
“R-right, Zoro. My name’s Usopp,” I waved my hands like the gesticulation would somehow help my words form into a coherent sentence, “but you probably already knew that from my ad... Hah..” I gave a quick huff before pushing through my awkward inexperience with ‘interviews’. “I was thinking we could talk and get to know each other before I take you to see the apartment.”
“That’s fine by me,” Zoro relaxed further in his seat. “What do you wanna know?”
Right at home, ain’t he.
~Do you smoke? “No”
~Are you a messy person? “I don't have a lot of things other than clothes.”
Doesn't quite answer the question but ill take it.
~Do you have friends over often? “No”
~What do you do for a living? “I’m a bouncer at a bar near here.”
Explains the muscle.
~Can you pay rent on time? “Yes, actually I brought the first month’s with me. Your ad said that split cost between the both of us plus the utilities would be $487 right?” Zoro dug around his pocket before pulling out a folded wad of cash and handing it to me.
“U-uh yeah,” tentatively I reach over to take the money. “Yeah...” I doubt I can find someone else by the end of the month. Zoro’s my safest bet at getting a roommate before next rent's due. He doesn’t seem so bad, I’m sure we’ll get along just fine.
...I guess this means there’s only one more question to ask.
“Do you wanna see the apartment?”

My Thoughts on Super Smash Bros
Just something I wanted to write up since Smash Bros is one of my favorite game series and kinda got me into video games.  (WARNING: Its fairly long...)
Super Smash Bros. (N64 & Melee)
Super Smash Bros. was my first 3D game. Got it one year for Christmas when I was a little kid with a Nintendo 64. That game introduced me to video games. Before that I had only played Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt on my parents’ NES console. I wasn’t hooked on video games until I got my hands on a Nintendo 64. “Whoa! The graphics are so 3D!” It also introduced me to so many major Nintendo characters I did not know about like Link, Samus, Fox, and Kirby. It was the best gateway a kid could ask for to “get into” video games. Inevitably I ended up getting a Gamecube with Super Smash Bros. Melee as my first game on it too. Melee was great just like reliving that original feeling all over again. What made these games even more special was unlocking the characters. In a time before internet, you had no clue who was in the game and how to unlock them. The excitement of seeing that “Challenger Approaching” screen was like nothing else. A lot of your information came from questionable  sources of kids at school. Rumors with no real answers (until you get an official guide book.) No internet leaks or spoilers. Those were good times!
One word I would use to describe the overall feel I got from Smash 64 and Melee would be Classic!
Tumblr media
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Years later, Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out. I’m not sure why, but I really got into that game. It was probably due to the timing and circumstances. The longest wait between Smash games being Melee to Brawl was 7 years and that brought a lot of desire for a new Smash game for me. Also the memories of being a kid playing this with my friends after school on weekends, big sleepovers, using the game’s crappy wi-fi connection, good times! I also did not understand the game’s mechanics as a kid and why people hated them, so I couldn’t complain about that. The art style of the game wasn’t necessarily my favorite, but it worked well for that game. It went from the bright vivid colors of Melee to a more dull, colorless, gritty style. Best example is Ocarina of Time Link being swapped over to Twilight Princess. Oh, and the game really picked up as a lot of fun when I began modding it. Turns out Wii’s were very easy to Homebrew and Brawl was fairly easy to mod. That brought out a HUGE replay value of installing new mods, making my own mods, and all sorts of endless possibilities with the game. Getting Project M (a fan mod for Brawl that reworked the entire game more competitively) really opened my eyes to the competitive side of Smash and showed me why normal Brawl was so bad.
One word I would use to describe the overall feel I got from Brawl from its art style, orchestrated full choir theme, to its fantastic Subspace Emissary cutscenes would be Epic!
Tumblr media
Super Smash Bros. 4
Smash eventually died down for another 6 years until Super Smash Bros. 4 came out. Man, Smash 4 was exciting because “Hey, new Smash game!”, but seeing it in full... it was honestly very weird. The 3DS version launching first felt like a big demo... at 240 pixels... wow. (I hated 3DS for taking wonderful games like Smash, Monster Hunter, the N64 Zelda remakes and dragging them into a low resolution, portable Hell!) That aside, I forcibly played the 3DS version until the Wii U one came out. Then the true game began and well it still wasn’t the Smash I was hoping for. It was fun, some cool new characters, but some more cuts too. Questionable new game mechanics among other things that made gameplay pretty un-fun. Hearing about how the 3DS version dragged down the Wii U version was quite disheartening too like Ice Climbers getting cut because they simply would not work on 3DS and the two games just HAD to be the same was stupid. The 3DS was a horrible anchor weighing down the game. Oh, and I don’t think they had a very clear direction with the art style of this game... The Zelda characters are still Twilight Princess designs, but are now bright and vivid? It just looks weird and out of place for them. Ganondorf looks exceptionally ugly because of that.
One word I would use to describe the overall feel I got from Smash 4 from its theme music and the whole game’s aesthetic feels very Sporty.
Tumblr media
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Not long after and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate came out of the dark to save the day. Ultimate is really amazing. They took the crappy Smash 4 and cut its chains from the 3DS so it could soar above and beyond. A lot of it is Smash 4 assets ported over from the Wii U to a better console, the Switch. They somehow got EVERY single character back with a ton of new ones, almost every stage, so much amazing music, and well it truly is deserving of the Ultimate title in terms of content!
So the game is pretty great and has A LOT of content, but its still not without issues (at least for me.) This is me being overly critical with the game and my MELEE FANBOY BULLSH*T opinions coming through, but there are quite a few things I don’t like about this game. The theme music (albeit catchy) is super sappy anime bullcrap music. I don’t mean that in a negative way, despite how I worded it, IT is very sappy anime music about the forces of good fighting evil together. The World of Light mode isn’t a lot of fun at least for me it wasn’t. It wasn’t Subspace Emissary, which I know its wasn’t meant to replace it. I had the most fun with Adventure mode in Melee and would’ve preferred to have a little mode similar to that instead. Spirits are seriously just the stickers from Brawl. I frequently call them that unintentionally when playing the game. Doing Spirit Board battles is nowhere near as fun as doing nicely planned out battles like Melee’s Event Matches (nothing can top Event Match 51!) Spirit Battles are typically just jokes that can be beaten in less than a minute. Also no trophies... I understand why they chose not to because of how much work they require, but it still doesn’t mean I can’t miss them. The gameplay is definitely an improvement over Smash 4, but I still crave that fast paced action Melee/ Project M had. Heavier gravity, harder to recover, quicker to KO, L-Canceling, hit-stun and proper combo potential are all things that made faster, higher speed action. I’m not super big into the competitive scene, but even I think the faster pace of Melee-style gameplay is far more fun to play and watch.
Then there’s issues created because the devs are pushing too much into the competitive side of the game such as picking stages first then characters second, not having the game remember my character when returning from a match, having to make new rulesets just to change a few options. I’m pretty sure these are all things competitive people want that help out in tourney situations and stuff, but I don’t like them for normal matches. These are small issues in the long run, but I am bothered by them every time I play and I don’t see them ever changing that. All they need is a few new options to fix this. Toggle an option for stage select or character select first, a quick customizable ruleset option and have saved rulesets separately, and the option to remember your fighter. Heck they could even go a step further have it remember your preferred color to each character saved to your name data like how Smash 4 3DS did (that was a cool feature!)
Tumblr media
The one word I would use to describe Smash Ultimate is HYPE! Nothing builds hype like a Smash Ultimate trailer. Every single trailer builds more hype for this game. From the original reveal trailer with the Inklings, Ridley, King K. Rool, and now Sephiroth?! Seeing those trailers, I can’t help, but smile and get hyped up and excited! Despite my nitpicky issues I have with the game, I can still say its a pretty darn good Smash game! I applaud Sakurai, the dev team, and Nintendo for going big with this game and putting so much effort into it and I can still enjoy it even if its not quite at the exact level I want.

Ordered a new TV. This will be my third tv replacement. I highly advise anyone to get their electronics from Walmart because their 3 month return policy is highly needed with large purchases that always seem to have issues right before the 3 month return widow closes.
This one has 7 dead pixels scattered across the screen. I thought the one was dirt, but nope dead and then I noticed the many others. Once you notice something like that you cannot not notice it.
I love the TV to pieces so it’s worth the complete pain in the ass hassle in the long run, but their shipping process and quality control sucks. I knew this before buying but was hoping I would be one of the lucky ones and get a good one right away. It’s a great product. Their quality control just sucks ass. The interface, smart features integration, and ability to customize a wide range of setting and features is very important to me and doesn’t seem to exist anymore near this extent with other brands so I’m stuck playing russian roulette and hoping for the best.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Review
It's somewhat surprising that the world's first foldable-screen PC is a ThinkPad. When foldable screens debuted on phones last year, they were expensive gimmicks with questionable durability. ThinkPads are mostly expensive laptops, to be sure, but they're legendary for being the opposite of gimmicky and flimsy. Fortunately, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold (starts at $2,499; $2,749 as tested) has the benefit of years of testing and research, and, at least as far as physical design is concerned, this Windows tablet mostly lives up to its ThinkPad name.
That said, it compares poorly with established Windows tablets such as the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 on price, battery life, and computing performance, making it a tough sell for the general public. Still, this revolutionary tablet PC is rugged, futuristic, and unlike any Windows device you've ever seen. Like the controversial original Samsung Galaxy Fold, the ThinkPad X1 Fold has an undeniable cool factor that will appeal to early adopters. Everyone else should wait a year or two in the hopes that a more reasonably priced and more powerful sequel comes along, and that Windows integrates foldability better.
The First Foldable Windows Tablet
The X1 Fold is a twin-faceted computing revolution. The most groundbreaking innovation, of course, is the physical design of the tablet. From the Apple iPad to the Microsoft Surface Go, most tablets have screens with diagonal measurements of around 12 inches or less. The X1 Fold's 13.3-inch display is slightly larger, a more fitting size when you're viewing feature-rich websites or editing a spreadsheet. While the tablet isn't heavy (it weighs 2.2 pounds) I've found that the best way to make use of the screen's full expanse is by propping it up on a desk with its built-in kickstand, much the same as you would with the Surface Pro 7.
But the ThinkPad X1 Fold has a trick up its sleeve that neither the Surface Pro 7 nor any other large tablet can match. The screen bends in the middle, turning the device into something resembling a hardcover book and rendering it immensely more flexible. With the screen folded, you could use the X1 Fold to catch up on the morning news in your magazine app, or use it as an ebook reader. You can also bend the two halves slightly together and set one of them on an airplane tray table or other tight space to use the X1 Fold as a mini conventional clamshell laptop. Set up like this, the bottom half of the display can show the virtual touch keyboard built into Windows, while the upper half that's tilted toward you displays content. Voila: You're now using a 7-inch laptop.
Finally, when it's time to finish up whatever you're working on, you can fold the screen completely in half like you're closing a book. Not only is the screen protected in transit this way, but the integrated leather exterior of the tablet also folds with the screen, negating the need for a case to protect the X1 Fold's outer chassis.
Folded, the tablet measures 1.1 by 9.3 by 6.2 inches (HWD), making it compact enough to fit nearly anywhere. Unfolded, the X1 Fold is 0.45 by 11.8 by 9.3 inches, slightly larger than the Surface Pro 7 with its 12.3-inch display.
Intel's 'Lakefield' Experiment Inside
The X1 Fold's second revolutionary aspect is its use of an Intel "Lakefield" processor. Intel designed Lakefield specifically for tablets and other extremely compact PCs. Introduced earlier this year, Lakefield more closely resembles the processors that power phones and Android tablets than those for traditional laptops and desktops.
Instead of having four powerful processing cores, like most late-model Intel Core i5 and Core i7 laptop chips do, Lakefield comes with five single-threaded cores of varying abilities. A single 10-nanometer (nm) "Sunny Cove" core on the Lakefield chip can handle the heavy-lifting applications, while four 10nm "Tremont" cores can be leveraged for less-intensive computing tasks.
Intel was able to minimize Lakefield's footprint by ditching the traditional method of laying the PC's components across a circuit board. Instead, a 3D-packaging technology called Foveros stacks components, including the DRAM, on top of each other, saving on space.
Intel markets the Lakefield variant in the X1 Fold as a Core i5-L16G7. Similar to other Core i5 chips, it has a 1.4GHz base clock speed. While the four Tremont cores can only be boosted up to 1.8GHz, the Sunny Cove core can run as high as 3GHz.
Theoretically, Lakefield promises benefits similar to those of competing low-power processors like the Apple M1 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx, including long battery life without sacrificing computing performance when you need it. Unfortunately, as you'll see in the performance discussion below, the X1 Fold falls far short on these promises. It behaves more like a processor intended for inexpensive devices like Chromebooks, offering neither impressive battery life nor adequate performance for anything beyond light tasks.
Accessories Cost Extra
You could use the X1 Tablet exclusively as a tablet, tapping on the screen with your fingers as the sole means of input. It's actually a satisfying experience for casual web browsing, thanks to the robust touch support built into Windows 10, and I spent much of my time testing the X1 Fold using it like this.
But you could do the same tasks with a conventional tablet that costs far less, so part of the X1 Fold's uniqueness lies in its optional accessories that are designed to complement the foldable screen—especially the nifty keyboard. Lenovo could have offered the X1 Fold with a more traditional folio-style keyboard like the Microsoft Surface Type Cover, but that would be impossible to store with the X1 Fold when it's folded like a book. Instead, the company is offering the new Lenovo Fold Mini Keyboard, an adaptation of its legendary ThinkPad keyboard in laptops.
For desktops and tablets, a ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard is available in a standalone wireless version, and that product shares some basic principles with the new Fold Mini Keyboard. You sync the Fold Mini board to the X1 Fold wirelessly, and you can set it on the tabletop in front of the tablet for longer typing sessions. But there are several key differences between the standalone ThinkPad keyboard and the Fold Mini. For starters, the Mini really is tiny. Its keys are a bit cramped, especially for my large fingers, and it has a minuscule touchpad beneath the space bar that is really only useful in situations where a cursor is absolutely necessary. Most of the time, you'll want to just tap the screen.
Still, in keeping with ThinkPad tradition, I find the keys remarkably sturdy and the overall experience better than I would expect from such a tiny keyboard. The Fold Mini keyboard can also magnetically attach to one half of the X1 Fold's screen. Attach it and fold the screen partway, and the physical keyboard replaces the virtual Windows one. Attach the keyboard and fold the X1 Fold completely flat, and you can transport both of them together.
The Fold Mini keyboard also charges wirelessly (via induction) when it's magnetically attached, keeping clutter to a minimum and eliminating one more charging cable to carry or lose. Alas, you'll pay handsomely for this accessory. Lenovo's more expensive X1 Fold configurations include it, or you can get it separately for $229.
The Fold Mini keyboard comes with a simple elastic loop to store the X1 Fold's other main optional accessory, the Lenovo Mod Pen. This digital stylus is more premium than the pens typically offered with Lenovo touch-screen Windows PCs, especially the ones that have small built-in pen holders, like the one on the Yoga C940.
The Mod Pen has a built-in battery and a USB Type-C charging port, and it uses the Wacom pen protocol for precise pressure and tilt sensitivity. It's generously sized, comfortable to grasp, and a fine tool for taking notes on the X1 Fold's display. It may even satisfy some amateur digital artists.
Kind of Blue...No Longer
The displays on the early prototypes of the X1 Fold we saw were plagued by a distracting bluish tint when viewed from extreme angles. (See the video below, shot at CES 2020, for an example.) That problem is thankfully reduced on the production version. Its OLED display, with a 2K resolution of 2,048 by 1,536 pixels, offers reasonably faithful color reproduction at most viewing angles. It's rated to display 95 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut.
Viewing-angle consistency is more important on the X1 Fold than on a tablet or a PC, since when the screen is folded, you're always going to be looking at all or half of it from a considerable angle. I do notice a bit of distortion in the lower portion of the screen when I have the device set up like a laptop on my desk, with the upper portion facing me and the lower portion facing the ceiling. But it's far from distracting, and it doesn't affect basic colors.
The most noteworthy aspect of the X1 Fold's display is the fact that you hardly notice the crease in the center when it's folded. When it's flat, two shallow divots about an inch apart are evident near the center, but I could see them only when the device was turned off. There's no way of completely hiding the folding part of the display, something that's also true on other foldable-screen devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. If you find yourself distracted by it, you can easily convince yourself that it's a badge of honor—this is the X1 Fold, after all, not a conventional tablet.
Around the display is a soft-touch black bezel interrupted by two hinges in the middle. The bezel is a bit stodgy-looking, with noticeable gaps where it meets the chassis. The hinge design is a bit underwhelming, as well. A flimsy, stretchable material covers the hinges, and you can easily peel it back with your fingernails. (Note to prospective buyers: Don't do that.) Lenovo invented convertible laptops with the Yoga brand, and has come up with some truly innovative past hinge designs, including one that resembles the wristband of a luxury watch. So the X1 Fold's hinge is a bit disappointing by comparison. This is in contrast with the exceptionally sturdy-feeling outer shell, made of carbon fiber and magnesium alloy, and covered with a luxurious, soft black leather that itself folds in the middle.
Lenovo says that the X1 Fold meets the usual durability and reliability standards for ThinkPads, including MIL-STD-810H testing. The company also tested the screen to ensure that it can handle the stresses of being opened and closed "thousands of times." The company offers a standard one-year mail-in warranty, which can be extended up to five years and supplemented with accidental damage protection for an additional charge.
The X1 Fold's single camera is located in the display bezel next to the hinge. With many of the best Windows tablets offering both front- and rear-facing cameras with 1080p sensors, it's a bit disappointing that the X1 Fold includes only a single 720p shooter. Image quality is what you'd expect from a laptop camera. Video is occasionally noisy, even in well-lit indoor environments.
The X1 Fold's speakers, meanwhile, leave a lot to be desired. They're loud enough, but there's virtually no bass response, which is also disappointing next to thinner tablets that offer better audio quality, including the Apple iPad.
Connectivity options are run-of-the-mill for a premium tablet. In addition to the standard Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Blutetooth 5.1, you can configure an X1 Tablet with an optional cellular modem, which requires a physical SIM card and supports both 4G LTE and "sub-6" 5G. (Millimeter-wave 5G is not available.) The physical port options include two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, one of which is used to charge the tablet.
One of the long edges has a volume rocker, but there's no 3.5mm headphone jack. You'll have to use Bluetooth headphones or a USB wired pair.
X1 Fold Software Shortcomings
As innovative as the X1 Fold is, prospective owners need to be aware of two major downsides. They do affect the usability, and they aren't befitting such an expensive piece of technology.
The first is the limited range of software that can take full advantage of the unique foldable display. Because the X1 Fold is the first device of its kind, virtually no major third-party apps are expressly designed for its unique screen layout.
As a result, X1 Fold owners will be limited to using a rudimentary Lenovo app for assigning apps and other screen elements to one half of the display or the other when it's folded. This Lenovo Mode Switcher app lives in the Windows taskbar, and it automatically detects when you start to fold the screen. It then offers three options...
The first two are split-screen views, with one app on the upper portion of the screen (or left-hand portion, if you're using the device like a book), and the other app on the lower (or right-hand) portion. There's also a single full-screen view, which keeps the screen layout the same as it was before you began to fold it.
The Mode Switcher works as intended, but I find its features inadequate. For instance, if you open a new app after the X1 Fold is already folded, the Mode Switcher app doesn't detect it, and the app opens in full-screen mode even if another mode is selected.
Also sorely missing is a shortcut to assign the virtual Windows keyboard to the entirety of one half of the display when it's folded. Instead, the on-screen keyboard behaves as it does on any other Windows device. You can either have it float, or snap it to the bottom of the screen.
Many of these software difficulties could be ironed out once Microsoft incorporates native support for foldable-screen devices into the Windows 10 operating system. This project, dubbed Windows 10X, was originally scheduled to be finished this year, but it has been delayed. In the interim, Lenovo's software solution feels like a stopgap measure unbefitting the X1 Fold's high price.
Testing the X1 Fold: Lakefield Makes Small Ripples
Separate from the software shortcomings, the X1 Fold's other significant drawback is the lackluster computing performance mentioned earlier. Customers are stuck with the Lakefield Core i5; there's no option for a full-strength "Ice Lake" or "Tiger Lake" Core i5 or Core i7 that you'll find in other tablets like the Surface Pro 7. The X1 Fold is also fixed at 8GB of memory. The only configurable computing component is the SSD, which ranges from 256GB to 1TB of capacity.
In several days of light use, I found the X1 Fold to be adequate for basic web browsing and word processing. It's free of hangs and lags, and the Mode Switcher is obligingly quick at rearranging the screen without sluggish animations. However, similar performance can be expected of an iPad or a Microsoft Surface Go 2 that costs less than a third of the X1 Fold's starting price. (See how we test Windows tablets.)
To see how the X1 Fold stacks up against competing tablets, I compared its results on our benchmark tests with those of a few other tablets and convertible PCs. They include the Dell Latitude 7200 2-in-1, a business-focused tablet with an older but still plenty capable 8th Generation Intel CPU. I've also added the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, a 2-in-1 convertible laptop that is likely the X1 Fold's closest in-house alternative now that Lenovo has discontinued its ThinkPad X1 Tablet. Finally, I've included the Surface Go 2 and Surface Pro 7, our top choices for budget and premium Windows tablets, respectively.
It's important to note that none of these systems approaches the X1 Fold's $2,749 price as tested, and there really aren't many Windows tablets that cost more than $2,000, period. One notable exception is the Microsoft Surface Book 3, an expensive detachable tablet aimed at creative professionals. (It comes standard with its keyboard/docking base, however, and is much more laptop-like than most tablets when docked.) We haven't tested the 13-inch version of the Surface Book 3, and the 15-inch version is too large to serve as a reasonable alternative to the X1 Fold.
Right off the bat, the X1 Fold's performance shortfalls are laid bare in our first test. The PCMark productivity and storage benchmarks simulate a variety of common PC tasks, from videoconferencing to web browsing and light photo editing. Scores of 4,000 and above are considered excellent on the PCMark 10 test, and the X1 Fold only manages a bit more than half that...
It does better on the PCMark 8 Storage test, though all SSD-based systems tend to exhibit similarly excellent performance here.
The Lakefield chip also demonstrates deficiencies in resource-intensive tasks like multimedia content creation. No compact tablet should be expected to excel with these types of workloads, but the X1 Fold is still far behind even the Surface Pro 7 when it comes to rendering a 3D image using Maxon's CPU-centric Cinebench app. The X1 Fold performs about the same on this test as the $730 Surface Go 2 does.
Also worth noting: The Surface Go 2 manages this task in silence, since it lacks an active cooling fan. The X1 Fold does have a fan that can become clearly audible under intensive workloads.
The X1 Fold's video-encoding capabilities aren't much more muscular than its 3D rendering. It took 36 minutes to transcode a 4K video to 1080p using the CPU-centric Handbrake app. It's worth noting that the Surface Pro 7 performed abnormally poorly on this test, though it still manages to beat the X1 Fold. Even the 8th Generation CPU in the Latitude 7200 2-in-1 managed to top the X1 Fold's result here.
Our final multimedia test involves measuring how long it takes to apply a series of 10 filters and effects to an image in Adobe Photoshop. The X1 Fold finished last here, slower than even the Surface Go 2.
In addition to falling short when compared with Windows competitors, the X1 Fold's scores on the Geekbench 5 CPU test suggest that it's no match for an iPad, either. The X1 Fold measures 592 on the Geekbench 5 single-core test, and 1,765 on the multi-core trial. The latest iPad Air, with Apple's A14 processor, scores 1,572 on the single-core test and 3,931 on the multi-core.
Decent Graphics Performance (for a Tablet)
In contrast to its mediocre performance on multimedia and general computing tasks, the X1 Fold holds its own when it comes to 3D graphics performance. We use two gaming-style benchmarks to approximate graphics capabilities, 3DMark and Superposition. While none of the test systems here is capable of the 30 frames per second (fps) mark that we typically regard as the minimum for smooth gameplay, the X1 Fold was in the ballpark of the Latitude and the X1 Yoga, especially on the 3DMark test.
Battery life is another disappointment for the X1 Fold. It lasted for just 8 hours on our video-playback battery rundown test, which is performed at 50 percent screen brightness and with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth switched off...
We expect more from a premium Windows tablet, as even the Surface Pro 7 lasted for nearly 12 hours. The X1 Fold's high-resolution screen is partly to blame here (more pixels consume more power), but it's not an excuse. For instance, the Surface Pro 7 has a much-higher-resolution display, measuring 2,736 by 1,824 pixels.
(Still) Waiting for the Foldable Revolution
The X1 Fold mostly nails its hardware. This is a ThinkPad, after all, and it lives up to the name. Nearly everything about the X1 Fold is meticulously engineered and feels sturdy, from the nifty external keyboard to the foldable display itself. There are a few minor drawbacks, such as a missing second camera and those stodgy black hinges, but overall, the physical design is excellent.
As well-engineered as the X1 Fold is, it nevertheless falls considerably short when it comes to computing performance, battery life, and the software required to take full advantage of its revolutionary screen. Because of that, it's hard to recommend to anyone but the most enthusiastic of deep-pocketed early adopters. Everyone else would be far better served by choosing a more capable and less-expensive tablet like the Surface Pro 7 instead. Or, if you simply must have a foldable screen on your person, the excellent Galaxy Z Fold 2 is an attractive option if you're also in the market for a new phone.
While the X1 Fold is ultimately falls flat as a first try for foldable Windows tablets, it doesn't rule out tantalizing future developments. If Microsoft is able to build support for foldable screens into the Windows operating system in an elegant way, it could spur innovation that gives rise to a new class of devices that use more capable components and are therefore more powerful (and, ideally, less expensive) than the X1 Fold. That's the future that fans of foldables should get excited about.

Lighting Arduino Experiment 8 Music Visualizer Part 3
What was the experiment?
This experiment was a short one, the LED strips arrived and I wanted to adapt the code from a button to the microphone and see if the previous potentiometer + button experiment would work with the modified code for potentiometer + microphone.
How did I do it?
The process for this was extremely simple and was just a case of switching the syntax between the Tinker cad project and Arduino, using the same microphone values and syntax used in the previous microphone experiment.
Except for the code change I had to cut the LED Strip to the right size (for this experiment I only used 1 strip not all 4) and connect it to the soulderless connector, but this was the same as cutting any LED strip, cut along the dotted line in the middle of the copper and ensure you connect the strip with the arrow facing away from where it is connected.
Here is the results of this experiment, the camera is slightly shaky due to me filming this straight after I received and opened the LED Strip.
vimeo
What issues did I face?
Thankfully I faced no issues with cutting the LED strips or with changing the code from button to microphone, and the entire process went very well for this part, but i assumed the moment I took the step from Tinkercad LED it would either present a lot of issue or none at all, luckily it was the latter.
Technical Information
Below is the code used for this experiment and a Circuit diagram made within Tinkercad, The circuit diagram is the same image as before and will be the same throughout the rest of the entries for the same reason as stated in previous ‘Music Visualizer’ Parts, but in the case of this experiment the Digital button shown is actually a Digital Microphone in the real project.
#include <Adafruit_NeoPixel.h> int pot = A5; int val = 0; int test = 150; int sensorPin = 2; bool audio = 0; int R; int G; int B; int inchcoloR = 0; int inchcoloG = 150; int inchcoloB = 0; int LEDPIN1 = 13; int LEDPIN2 = 12; int LEDPIN3 = 7; int LEDPIN4 = 6; int NUMPIXELS1 = 6; int NUMPIXELS2 = 6; int NUMPIXELS3 = 6; int NUMPIXELS4 = 6; Adafruit_NeoPixel pixels1 = Adafruit_NeoPixel(NUMPIXELS1, LEDPIN1); Adafruit_NeoPixel pixels2 = Adafruit_NeoPixel(NUMPIXELS2, LEDPIN2); Adafruit_NeoPixel pixels3 = Adafruit_NeoPixel(NUMPIXELS3, LEDPIN3); Adafruit_NeoPixel pixels4 = Adafruit_NeoPixel(NUMPIXELS4, LEDPIN4); void setup() {    pinMode(sensorPin, INPUT);  pixels1.begin();    pixels2.begin();    pixels3.begin();    pixels4.begin();    pixels1.show();    pixels2.show();    pixels3.show();    pixels4.show();    Serial.begin (9600); } void loop() {  audio = digitalRead(sensorPin);  val = analogRead(pot);  Serial.print(val);  Serial.print("pot, ");  Serial.println();  if (audio == HIGH)  {  R = inchcoloR;  G = inchcoloG;  B = inchcoloB;  }  if (audio == LOW)  {  R = 0;  G = 0;  B = 0;  }  if (val <= 0)  {  normal();  }  else if(val >= 1020){    illuminate(6);  }  else if(val >= 820){    illuminate(5);  }  else if(val >= 615){    illuminate(4);  }  else if(val >= 410){    illuminate(3);  }  else if(val >= 205){    illuminate(2);  }  else if(val >= 100){    illuminate(1);  }  pixels1.show();  pixels2.show();  pixels3.show();  pixels4.show(); } void normal(){  for(int i = 0; i < 6; i++){  pixels1.setPixelColor(i, pixels1.Color(0,0,0));  pixels2.setPixelColor(i, pixels2.Color(0,0,0));  pixels3.setPixelColor(i, pixels3.Color(0,0,0));  pixels4.setPixelColor(i, pixels4.Color(0,0,0));  } } void illuminate(int amount){  //reset all  normal();  //then reilluminate for the amount of leds sent  for(int i = 0; i < amount; i++){  pixels1.setPixelColor(i, pixels1.Color(R,G,B));  pixels2.setPixelColor(i, pixels2.Color(R,G,B));  pixels3.setPixelColor(i, pixels3.Color(R,G,B));  pixels4.setPixelColor(i, pixels4.Color(R,G,B));  } }
Tumblr media
The only Technical difference between the current and previous version of the project is the syntax change for the microphone as stated above, as well as the fact that the real version does not have an external 10k Ohm resistor, as the LM393 Microphone has an internal one.
The Syntax change for the Microphone was just a case of replacing syntax such as ‘bool buttonstate=0;′ with ‘bool audio = 0;’ purely so that both myself and anyone else that creates or uses the code/project will not get confused.
I also changed the type of digital value shown within the digital if statements from ‘if (buttonstate == 1)’ to ‘if (audio == HIGH)’ and the reason I did this was again for clarity sake, as it resulted in less numbers on screen, helping to simplify the code a little.
Components List
1x Arduino 1x Breadboard Varied Jumper Wires - depending on length and breadboard. 1x 6 Pixel Addressable WS2812b LED Strip 1x LM393 Digital Microphone 1x Potentiometer
Conclusion
This was easily the most nerve wracking experiment for me, the transition from digital to physical, because so far everything was working perfectly on Tinkercad - so if there were any issues in the physical version it could have been a deeper routed issue which could have derailed the whole project.
Luckily everything was fine with the transition and I was one step closer to the very near finish line for this project.

What Do YOU Want? Pt. 8
A Kwon Jiyong series ft. Kim Jiwon
Genre: Angst/Fluff
Word count: 3,400+
Summary: The most important person in the world to you can appear most often when you least expect it. But through everything, you can’t forget about you and your own happiness. Who are you happy with? Who is the best for you?
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 ... Part 9 Part 10
(A/N: All right, so it looks like we’re going to keep the word count here from now on! I especially adored this part, so I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did while writing it!)
Tumblr media
The next month and a half flew by in one large blur. You spent the majority of the time completely enthralled in your career; planning events, hiring new assistant choreographers, balancing budgets as new additions to the building continued, and patting yourself on the back all along the way. You’d occasionally meet up with friends you’d made outside of YG but all the wondrous responsibilities of adulthood piled themselves on so high to the point that your only free time came after 11pm. It was in these moments that you would instead lie awake for hours, staring into the screen of your television while the rest of the world slept around you.
You’d always found a certain comfort in staying up past 2am with nothing to do. The only thing comparable was dancing. These were the hours that felt as though the globe temporarily stopped spinning. For once, you could lie awake and have absolutely no responsibilities hanging over your head or any people that needed pleasing. Everything outside became quiet, while you were free to bask in moments of self-reflection and peace.
You’d found yourself enjoying one of those moments right now; cradled up in a blanket on your couch while music filled the room. A calm smile had taken over your face until the sound of a phone vibrating against glass broke through the music. A more exuberant smile replaced it while you reached an arm out to the coffee table and eagerly grabbed the device, knowing exactly who would be texting you so late.
BB: Hey you. Are you awake?
Y/N: Nope.
BB: …fine then!
Y/N: I’m here I’m here. How did it go today? Do you have pictures for me?
BB: Maybe I do, maybe I don’t.
This had become your routine; though your schedule was nowhere near as hectic as Bobby’s, this was the only time that the both of yours coincided nicely so you could actually text or call each other. The phone calls were exceptionally rare but they always lasted for at least 2 hours; the two of you rambling on about absolutely whatever came to mind.
You often sent each other pictures of what your days looked like; Bobby sending plenty of audiences cheering, group photos with the guys, and the occasional selfie that you’d tease him for. He always made sure to include the views from whatever flight they’d been on that day as well, which made you incredibly happy. He knew just how beautiful you found the world to be when looking down on it from so high up, so he always took at least eight images. Your need to preserve memories had you happily saving every single picture to a folder on your laptop; each image meaning more to you than the last.
Even if iKon’s plans kept him away from his phone at all times, he made sure to send you good morning and goodnight texts every single day; warming your heart until you felt it radiate through your cheeks. Neither of you bothered to put a label on what exactly was going on between the two of you, but you honestly preferred it that way. It was nice and it all felt positively carefree.
You still never thought you’d miss Bobby as much as you did right now. It was hard, but you both knew that you’d see each other again soon enough to make up for it all. Just another week and a half was all you had to wait.
These late nights alone weren’t always a positive cathartic experience though. Sometimes they brought with them the strongest feeling of loneliness you’d ever felt.
You lay on your couch the following night wrapped up in a blanket, Bobby having needed to get up extra early and already said goodnight. An empty tub of Ben n Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie lay on the ground within arm’s reach next to an empty bottle of wine. You sighed as you flipped aimlessly through the late night TV choices, thinking about the past.
It was definitely one of those nights.
Though you hated how often alcohol brought your mind back to this, you couldn’t help but think about a time when you used to share these late nights with someone. The two of you would walk around hand-in-hand down the dimly lit streets, relishing in these moments of solace. They were moments where you were free to be outside without a care in the world at who could see. You’d smile, as you immersed yourselves in the emptiness of the once busy highways; feeling as though you’d successfully frozen time. All that was left were you and him.
There’s something truly special that can develop between two people that stay awake all hours of the night with one another; just discussing and pondering anything that comes to mind or wandering around the city while the rest of the world were alone with their dreams. There must be a word for it.
As you lay still beneath your blanket, trying to think of the word while yet another rerun of Running Man came on: you felt the wine awaken your bladder. You quickly scurried off to the bathroom to relieve yourself as your mind continued to roam through the past. On your way back to the couch, you accidentally kicked something on the floor of your bedroom: Your camera bag.
Without thinking twice, you reached in and grabbed your camera out and turned it on. You knew for a fact that you’d taken it out on one of those late night walks before and that there was bound to be evidence on this memory card. You knew it wasn’t healthy to miss him, especially because of how happy you were recently. But in this moment of loneliness, alcohol blurring your senses, you just wanted to go back to these times; to be a fly on the wall and experience those late nights just once more.
You cradled the camera as you flipped backwards from the footage of your dancers, past that last video of Jiyong sleeping and past several random test shots of yourself dancing, until you reached a thumbnail of your back in front of a dimly lit street. You blinked away the lightheadedness caused by the wine as you focused your senses on the screen and hit play.
“It’s too dark, jagi, you can’t really see anything.” Jiyong’s voice from off screen startled you slightly. Your silhouette was all that could be seen; illuminated by the small dots of yellow coming from street lights in the distance. He was filming you.
“Noooo! Ok, well there’s a streetlight up ahead. It should help. Just keep it rolling and say something cute until we get there.” You began to walk away and stumbled slightly while he chuckled to himself. The two of you often had some alcohol on board when you took these late night trips.
“Something cute.”
Though it was too dark to tell on screen, you saw your silhouette stop moving and your head whip around; you knew the exact look you were probably giving him. Jiyong’s snickering filled the speakers while you turned back around and started jogging to the light.
You could hear his shoes scuff against the sidewalk as he followed suit in attempts to catch up to you. “Ooh she’s going to kill me if I drop this.” He muttered so only the camera could hear him.
“Kwon Jiyong, if you drop that camera, I’m breaking up with you!” You shouted over your shoulder once you noticed him jogging after you with the expensive device in hand. He laughed to himself once more, knowing you didn’t even hear him already say something similar.
You approached the streetlight and the surroundings of the shot instantly improved. You were able to make out more details of your outfit; a pair of black Vans, black leggings, and an oversized grey sweatshirt with the hood pulled up. You watched yourself stop underneath the light and start spinning with both arms extended out to either side; a big smile across your face.
The camera zoomed in to your face, making you slightly smirk in real time. As your past-self stopped spinning, you looked into the camera and then looked immediately past it to Jiyong. The perplexed look on your face telling that he was doing something off screen. “What?” You asked with a shy smile. “Are you zooming in on my face again?!”
“I can’t help it. You’re just so beautiful, jagi.” He cooed with the utmost sincerity; a smile evident in his voice. You instantly brought both sleeves of the sweatshirt up to cover your face while you giggled. “Ahhh, stop it, you’re just drunk!” He laughed at your shyness while he zoomed back out to the original image.
A hand with an all too familiar smiley face tattoo appeared in the bottom of the shot, extending out to you. You removed a hand from your face with a grin and placed it in his while he brought it out of view. The distinct sound of a kiss was heard before he returned the hand to you and you continued spinning around giddily.
“Is someone happy?” Jiyong called out in amusement while you were seen starting to wander off again through the shaky lens.
“Maybe!” You stumbled again slightly before turning back towards the camera to face him. “All right I don’t trust you with my camera anymore. Gimme that.” You demanded.
The speakers muffled momentarily, while Jiyong muttered something inaudible and relinquished his filming privileges. “It’s your turn. Go over there and do cute stuff.” His figure passed in front of the shot hazily for a moment while your drunk past-self worked to keep him in focus. As the pixels aligned themselves, his upper half came into perfect view; illuminated by the glow of the lamp post.
His face was clean of all makeup, and instead painted with a smile as he looked off screen at you. He wore a black sweatshirt with the hood up, matching yours, while pieces of his black hair poked out near the top. He swayed back and forth for a minute before squinting his eyes into the lens and bringing a hand up to make an “I’m watching you” gesture. Your laugh was heard off screen as he continued being silly; attempting to make ugly faces and then covering it and uncovering it a-la peekaboo.
“I love this man, ladies and gentleman!” You said, raising your voice, while he laughed and looked at the ground; waving a hand at you in mock embarrassment.
“Do you love me back, Ji?!”
He looked at you, still smiling but slightly alarmed. “Yes! Of course I love you!”
“Whoa, ok ok, no need to be yelling babe. People are trying to sleep, you know.” You said; your voice now much lower than before.
He laughed before he brought his fists to either side of his face while leaning his head back and shouted “I love Y/N, everyone!! Can you hear me?!” The camera shook suddenly, making it clear that you’d stopped focusing on keeping the shot that was now fixed back on darkness. Both of you laughed mischievously in the background before the sound of shoes against pavement was heard again, followed by the sound of three kisses.
Still laughing, you fumbled your hands around the camera causing it to produce static once more. “Oh shit, I should probably turn this off, huh?” You questioned in between the laughter.
“Sure, jagi, let’s keep walking around.” Jiyong’s voice was the last thing you heard before the video ended; returning back to the opening, motionless image of you on the sidewalk.
You felt the sudden need to sniff as the tears that had been rolling down your cheeks made themselves known. You wiped them away with the collar of your shirt with a sigh and sat down on the edge of your bed; turning your camera off.
That was not one of your better drunk ideas.
But you would be lying to yourself if you said you didn’t still miss those moments. Your wine-fueled mind continued to think about Jiyong while your mother’s voice echoed in your ears.
“Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened.”
It was advice she’d say quite often, that you were certain came from Dr. Seuss, but it applied all too well to this very moment. There’s no use in dragging yourself down in missing the past which you can’t bring back; instead you should take the good memories and hold your head high, knowing just how meaningful they were to you. You sniffed back more tears and nodded your head as you mentally pulled your tipsy-self together.
Instead, you thought about Jiyong and hoped that Nana knows how much he likes to wander around late at night while the world slept. And you sincerely hoped that he cared about her.
You ran your hands through your hair, frustratingly pleased that you were finally at your last errand for the day; the bank. You’d been running all over town from meetings with choreographers, to fixing class schedules and everything in between. You greeted the cheerful bank teller with a forced and tired smile, while you got your debit card out to deposit an important check.
“Oh shit.” You muttered unintentionally loud after you got through swiping your card into the reader.
“Is everything ok?” The bank teller asked you, while attempting to look over their perched desktop towards the small screen in front of you.
“Oh yeah, sorry, I just noticed that today is my birthday.” You said nonchalantly at the animation of balloons and confetti floating across the little screen. It’s funny how banks make a habit to personalize your relationship with them. Even funnier, that it was nearly 4 o’clock and this was the first time someone, or something, had wished you a Happy Birthday.
“Oh! Well, Happy Birthday miss.” They smiled that classic bank teller smile that reads “God get me out of here.” You bowed slightly and thanked them as you chuckled to yourself, knowing they would much rather be home laying on their couch.
Anyone who knew you well knew that you never liked to make a big deal about your birthday. It took great convincing to get Jiyong to wrap his head around this and not buy you expensive jewelry or designer clothing on this day when you were dating. It was a day just like any other so why bring all this extra attention to yourself? You also grew up in a home that couldn’t always afford buying presents on such occasions, so you never expected much in celebration aside from the gathering of close friends and family and you have always been entirely content with that.
But this year was bound to be a little different. Since all your friends and loved ones were out of town, it would be the first time you’d celebrate completely on your own, and you managed to convince yourself that you were a-ok with this. After all, last year had somewhat prepared you for this since Jiyong took your feelings about your birthday a little too literally and forgot about it altogether. Today’s just another day for him wherever he is…just like last year. You smacked the steering wheel as you ventured home, bringing yourself out of any resentment you still harbored for that day, and turned on the radio.
As you cruised down the street that led to your complex, your phone ringing inside your bag caught your attention. Looking at the time, you knew it was still far too early for your parents or any of your other relatives in the states to be awake so you figured it was a business call. You raked through your bag as you continued to steer with one hand, keeping your eyes on the road until you found the ringing device. You looked away from the road for half a second and gasped once you saw the ID of the caller whose name hadn’t appeared on your phone screen in nearly a year. “Mama Kwon.”
You answered the call immediately. “Eomma!” you shouted into the speaker as you pulled into your complex with one hand on the wheel. The laugh of one of the sweetest women alive filled your ear and brought the biggest smile to your face. “Y/N, sweetheart, Happy Birthday!”
“Oh, eomma, you remembered, thank you so much! You single-handedly just made my day.” You hadn’t heard from her in so long that you actually felt tears begin to form.
“I always remember your birthday, honey, of course. How are you doing? Has everything with the studio gone well?”
“Yes, yes, everything is going great. Thank you for asking. How about you? How’s the family?” You continued conversing with her as you made your way into the apartment and got settled. No one could remove the smile on your face, even if they tried to slap it off. You had always been close with Jiyong’s mom and it broke your heart even further when you recognized that saying goodbye to him meant that you would have to say goodbye to her as well. She didn’t know just how much speaking to her right now truly meant to you.
“All right, sweet girl, I’ll let you go. I’m sure you have a lot planned today.” You put a hand over your mouth to keep from laughing at the irony of her statement. “But before we say bye, I just want to say one thing if that’s all right.”
“Of course, eomma, anything. Go right ahead.”
“I am truly sorry that things did not work out between you and Jiyong. I know how he can be, but I know that he loves you dearly and that the two of you went so well together. It is truly a shame and I am so very sorry for that. But you’re such a sweet, beautiful girl. You keep your head up and don’t be a stranger, all right? Come visit me once in a while!”
You managed to chuckle through the tears that had started to form once again. “Oh I will, I promise you I will. Thank you for saying so but you have nothing to apologize for. It has been very hard on me and I’m sure it has been very hard on him as well but you know that I wish him nothing but the best.” You hadn’t said any of this out loud before and each word tasted bitter.
“All right, honey. It’s been so nice to hear from you. You have a wonderful rest of your day and be sure to eat well and drink plenty of water. Do you hear me?” You grinned at her motherly nagging and nodded despite the fact that she couldn’t see you. “I promise. Thank you so much for calling.”
Once you hung up and set the phone down on your nightstand, you fell backwards onto your bed and let out a contented sigh. She truly was like a second mother to you and in just sharing that one phone conversation, you knew that anything could happen for the rest of the day and you’d be happy. As you closed your eyes, your body went limp as you gave in to sleep’s warm embrace that had been calling your name all day.
You woke up from the unexpected nap to the sound of your phone ringing again. Checking the time before answering, you noticed you’d successfully napped for two straight hours. Your mind was still foggy as you swiped across your screen and answered, not paying any attention to the caller ID.
“Hello?” You asked and immediately cursed yourself for how obviously groggy you sounded.
“Hey you. Long time no see.” An all too familiar husky voice filled your receiver.
“Bobby, hey! It’s so early, what’s going on over there? Is everything ok?” You were shocked to hear from him so early on in the evening, as you beamed with excitement at the sound of his voice.
“Yeah, yeah everything’s fine! We’re just in between locations here, so I wanted to talk to you in the meantime and ask how your day’s been and all that jazz.” It was clear he was speaking through one of his big grins, which had you blushing while you made your way to the living room and plopped down on the couch.
“Oh listen to you, caring about my day and stuff. It’s been busy as hell that’s for sure. I went to…”
You were interrupted halfway through your sentence by a loud, rhythmic knock at the door. Not expecting any company at all, you scowled in the direction of the front step, still clutching your phone to your ear.
“Uh, can I actually call you right back? It sounds like I have an unexpected guest…”

Google Pixel 2 Rumors at a Glance
Just two Pixels will ship in the fall, after Google reportedly shelves a third model
LG reportedly will build at lest one of the new phones
Expect a curved OLED screen with a similar aspect ratio to the Galaxy S8
Waterproof design
Snapdragon 835 processor
5.99-inch screen for Pixel 2 XL and 4.97 inches for Pixel 2 (according to XDA Developers)
Two Models, Not Three?
A report from German site WinFuture picked up by Slashgear claimed that Google may be working on three Google Pixel phones for 2017. The codenames are supposedly Walleye, Muskie and Taimen. All three are names of fish, and Walleye is believed to be the smallest of the bunch, and Muskie could be the replacement for the Google Pixel XL. Because the Taimen is a larger fish, it could possibly be a Pixel 2 XXL.
Since that report broke, however, Android Police followed up with a report that Muskie, the rumored successor to the Pixel XL, had been cancelled. Instead, Google is going to focus on Taimen, which will have a bigger screen than the current Pixel XL; Walleye, the Pixel's successor, is still on track, too. According to 9to5Google, a bug report indicates that LG is making the Taimen phone on Google's behalf.
Display
Based on a June report from XDA Developers, the larger of the two new Pixel 2 phones (Taimen) will sport a 5.99-inch OLED display with 1440p resolution. The smaller Walleye device will reportedly feature a 4.97-inch screen. Interestingly, the site claims that only the larger Pixel 2 will have narrower bezels, which seems odd.
According to an April report from Korean outlet ETNews, Google is looking to secure access to flexible OLED technology from LG Display, which could give the Pixel 2 a slick curved screen that brings it up to speed with the Galaxy S8.
Earlier, specs of the Pixel XL2 — which seems like it's the Taimen phone Google's allegedly working on — were posted on the GFXBench benchmarking site. They show a phone with a 5.6-inch screen and 2560 x 1320 resolution, giving the Pixel XL2 essentially the same aspect ratio as the Galaxy S8 and its Infinity Display.
Release Date
We now know the Google Pixel 2 will come out in 2017. Rick Osterloh, VP of Hardware at Google, confirmed it in an interview at this year's Mobile World Congress. Osterloh didn't explain exactly when, but guaranteed it, stating "You can count on a successor this year, even if you don't hear a date from me now."
The original Google Pixel and Pixel XL were released in October, so it's reasonable to expect that the sequels will arrive around the same time. This would also give Google a little bit of a buffer between the launch of its new devices and the much anticipated iPhone 8.
Price
An earlier report from 9to5Google said that Google will offer a lower-cost Pixel 2 aimed at the masses. But Google's Osterloh seemed to refute that when he noted that the company has no plans to make it less expensive, stating that "the Pixel stays premium."
The replacement for the Pixel XL could command a higher premium than today's model, says TechRadar, which currently starts at $769. The entry-level Pixel costs $649.
Processor
The same report from Slashgear notes that the next wave of Google Pixel phones will sport Qualcomm's MSM8995 chipset, which is the Snapdragon 835 platform. We've already seen how fast the Galaxy S8 can be, and it's no surprise that Google's flagships will feature the same processor.
The 835 chip is also quite efficient, so you should expect the Pixel 2 phones to last longer on a charge than their predecessors. The Pixel XL is already on our list of the longest lasting phones.
The more recent XDA Developers report seems to confirm that the Snapdragon 835 CPU will be on board along with 4GB of RAM.
Design
XDA Developers says that the back of the Pixel 2 will be similar to last year's model with a two-tone glass and metal finish. We were not a fan of that look. However, apparently the glass window is located near the top of the device and will no longer include the fingerprint scanner.
The Pixel 2 will "definitely" come with waterproofing technology, 9to5Google's Stephen Hall said in a tweet on Jan. 25. He said that he was told about the feature back in October, but "forgot about" it.
MORE: Google Pixel vs. iPhone 7 vs. Galaxy S7: Which Flagship is Best?
Hall added that the source, who wasn't identified in the report, told him that Google decided against offering waterproofing in the first model because of a "time constraint." He went on to say that Google was having trouble getting the hardware waterproof in time and for the right price.
Another report from 9to5Google suggests that the Pixel 2 will ditch the headphone jack, which is backed up by XDA Developers.
Camera
Not much is known about the cameras on the Pixel 2 phones, but XDA Developers reports that it will be a single lens instead of two. That means you shouldn't expect features like a true optical zoom or Portrait mode that blurs out the background, which the iPhone 7 Plus offers. The OnePlus 5 also features a dual camera setup on the back.
The Competition
The Google Pixel line is Google's answer to Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S devices, offering big screens, ample power, and high-end cameras. And while debate rages over how well they'll sell as time goes on and they face more competition, they're clearly designed to be flagship handsets for anyone who wants a top-notch Android experience.
Looking ahead, the Google Pixel 2 will need to face off with powerful competitors, including the iPhone 8, which could make an appearance before the Pixel 2 this fall. According to rumors, the iPhone 8 could come with an all-new all-glass design, curved screen, and smarter Siri.
Expect to hear much more about the Pixel 2 in the coming months as rumors continue to surface

Nikon D780 Review: A Great DSLR is Still a DSLR

Nikon D780 Review: A Great DSLR is Still a DSLR
"The Nikon D780 is the DSLR to buy."
Phase detection in live view
Eye AF works very well
4K video with 10-bit output
Weatherproof design
1 / 8000s to 15m shutter speed
Viewfinder AF feels out of date
More expensive than Nikon Z 6
Some advantages over mirrorless
If you want a DSLR, you should buy the full screen Nikon D780. The $ 2,300 D780 is a new Goldilocks camera and Nikon's first DSLR with built-in phase detection auto focus.
But do you want a DSLR?
Appearance. I like the D780. It is a balanced camera with strong performance and excellent picture quality. But in 2020 it's hard for me to find a reason why I would choose the smaller, lighter, and cheaper Nikon Z 6, the mirrorless counterpart of the D780.
Instead of fueling my enthusiasm for DSLRs, shooting the D780 tipped the scales further in favor of mirrorless. It's a good camera, but part of a dying race.
Design and interface
Daven Mathies / Digital Trends
The DSLR is the direct further development of the SLR camera or SLR camera from the film era. A SLR camera, which was revolutionary for its time, let photographers see directly through the lens with a reflective mirror and prism (which is old-fashioned for reflective).
DSLRs carried this design into the digital age and replaced silver with silicon, but left the mirror and the viewfinder alone.
However, digital cameras can feed a live feed directly from the sensor, providing another way to display an image through the lens without the need for a bulky mirror box. This is how the mirrorless camera was born.
The supposed advantage of a DSLR is the optical viewfinder, which offers a clear, excellent view. Since electronic viewfinders (EVFs) with OLED screens and resolutions of 6 million pixels have improved, optical viewfinders do not consider themselves necessary.
EVFs are also more powerful. You can view exposure and white balance previews, review images, and even call up exposure and focusing aids such as a histogram, zebra crossing, or focus peaking.
Daven Mathies / Digital Trends
The D780 has numerous live view functions that do not work with the optical viewfinder. Where DSLRs used to be valued for their auto focus, Live View AF now offers many advantages, such as better image coverage and face recognition.
As a result, the DSLR is beginning to feel out of date. And yet Nikon believes that if the Nikon Z 6 – now over a year old – costs only $ 1,850 at the time of writing, it can sell a D780 for $ 2,300.
Why do photographers appreciate DSLR so much? I think there are a few small but important factors that matter. Old-school Nikon photographers have a large collection of F-mount lenses, the battery life of a DSLR is better thanks to the low power consumption of an optical viewfinder, and the DSLR feels familiar.
There is also less competition in the DSLR space since Canon is the only company that makes a competitive camera (and, to be honest, the EOS 6D Mark II doesn't really compete). Nikon can charge anything it wants for the D780. It owns this part of the DSLR market.
Nikon D780 vs. Nikon D750
Daven Mathies / Digital Trends
Despite being half a decade old, following the D750 is difficult. In our 9 out of 10 reviews, Digital Trends called it "outstanding". It was the best camera for the money at the time, and remained class-leading among DSLRs for years.
The new functions of the D780 concentrate on processing and electronics. Thanks to a new 24 megapixel sensor and an Expeed 6 processor, this enables autofocus with phase detection in the live view as well as face and eye tracking.
It's all great stuff, but nothing the mirrorless Nikon Z 6 doesn't have.
Daven Mathies / Digital Trends
The data sheet is littered with minor but important upgrades. The shutter speed is now 1/8000 second, which is faster than the D750. It can also slow down and allow 15-minute exposures without a remote control. This is a huge increase over the 30 second limit of the D750. For continuous shooting, the speed increases slightly from 6.5 to 7 frames per second, but in live view, the D780 can achieve impressive 12 fps with the electronic shutter (if you drop down to 12-bit RAW).
The image sensor has essentially the same resolution, but is now backlit and helps bring the ISO to a new extended maximum of 204,800, 2 steps above the D750. The LCD resolution has increased by over 1 million pixels to a total of 2.36 million.
Video shows significant improvements from Full HD to 4K when expected. The flat N-Log color profile from Nikon and the 10-bit 4: 2: 2 output via HDMI are, alongside the massive (and very expensive) EOS 1D X Mark III from Canon, one of the best DSLRs for videos. However, this is no better than the mirrorless Nikon Z 6.
Daven Mathies / Digital Trends
The battery life is significantly improved by a CIPA rating of 2,260 exposures with the optical viewfinder. It's impressive in every context, and it's about 1,000 more than the D750. Part of this increase, however, is due to the fact that the D780 no longer has a built-in flash, a feature of the D750 that would have had a negative impact on CIPA test results.
There is no question that the D780 is a worthy replacement for the D750. But whether the D780 as DSLR 2020 is the right camera for you … well, that's not so clear.
characteristics
While the D780 benefits from the mirrorless technology of the Z series, the DSLR-specific components of the D750 can hardly be updated. It recycles the same autofocus system with 51-point viewfinders, although it has been updated with the flagship D5 focusing algorithm.
I was impressed with how well the D780 could keep up with moving subjects with continuous autofocus in Nikon's 3D tracking mode, but when the Nikon D6 arrived this year and brought a brand new AF system, I'm not sure why Nikon did this did not give the D780 the entire 153-point AF module of the Nikon D5 instead of just the algorithm.
It is strange to hold back if the D780 is to survive another 5 to 6 years. The Multi-Cam 3500FX II focusing sensor has roots that go back to the 2007 Nikon D3.

The viewfinder is the same. It's a good viewfinder with a bright penta prism and 100% coverage, but its 0.7x magnification is significantly less than the 0.75x magnification of the D850. Yes, the D850 is bigger, but I'm not sure if Nikon will have to worry about keeping the D780 as small as possible because its mirrorless cameras offer a better solution for photographers who need a compact system.
I would have loved to see an AF joystick, something that Nikon has on its other high-end cameras, including the D500 crop sensor. It's a simple addition that increases usability more than you would expect. Choosing a focus point with the multi-selector pad is okay, but not so ergonomic.
None of these things make the D780 a bad camera. It just can't be anywhere near the revolutionary leap I hoped for on a DSLR.
picture quality
The viewfinder makes it difficult for you to distinguish the D780 from the D750. However, when you turn on live view, the difference becomes clear.
After generations have waited for Nikon to use Live View autofocus properly, the time has finally come. In combination with the touchscreen, the focus is quick, accurate and flexible. Eye detection turns on automatically and works well, even if the eyes of a subject are recognized with dark sunglasses.
Daven Mathies / Digital Trends
All of this is great and makes the D780 tilt screen more useful than the Nikon D750.
However, it is the same system as the Nikon Z 6, where things like eye AF can be used through the electronic viewfinder, which is not possible with the D780's optical viewfinder.
In addition, the Live View autofocus is simply more accurate because the focus is measured on the image sensor itself. Although this is usually not a problem for first-party lenses, I have tested three Sigma Art Primes. One of them focused frontally through the viewfinder and was sharp in live view. I used Nikon's AF fine-tuning feature to fix this. This is a great feature, but I wouldn't have had to do anything without a mirror.
Thanks to Eye AF in particular, I used more live view than the viewfinder. But such shots make the D780 an overweight mirrorless camera.
That brings me to my biggest problem with DSLRs. They behave like two different cameras, depending on whether you are using the viewfinder or the LCD screen. This is certainly confusing for beginners and frustrating even as an experienced DSLR shooter.
This does not mean that the D780 does not offer clear advantages for certain applications. A DSLR is still better for wedding and event photographers thanks to the long battery life and compatibility with the AF auxiliary grille projected by an external flash. This helps enormously when taking pictures in dark reception halls, but is not compatible with the autofocus with live view. The two SD card slots are ideal for a live event with high stakes and offer security through redundant storage.
In fact, I will be shooting a wedding with the D780 in about a week. Even as a fan of mirrorless cameras in general, I'm glad I have a DSLR for this job and happier that the Nikon D780 is DSLR.
But for anything else? Just give me a Nikon Z 6.
Our opinion
Even if Nikon made the changes that I think are missing – with the D5's 153-point AF system and the addition of an AF joystick – the D780 would leave me heavily in the mirrorless camp. It's a good DSLR, but feels like a makeshift solution for Nikon D750 owners who aren't yet ready to go mirrorless.
Nikon nudges people to the Z series, and I see no reason to complain about it. From EVF to image stabilization in the body, Nikon's Z cameras offer decisive advantages. I also like the strategy Nikon is pursuing with the Z-series lenses, which focuses on high quality 1: 1.8 aperture glass to keep size and costs under control. That's the future.
The D780 is a thing of the past. A brilliant piece of it, no doubt, but still in the past.
Is there a better alternative?
Yes, the Nikon Z 6. For most people, a mirrorless camera makes more sense. The Z 6 is currently available with the F-mount lens adapter and a memory card for under $ 1,850.
Strictly speaking, the D780 is the best in its class within DSLRs and has no real competitor, although Canon's EOS 6D Mark II is cheaper at just $ 1,400 at the time of writing.
How long it will take?
The D780 is well built, weatherproof, and should withstand professional wear and tear. If the D750's lifespan in half a decade is an indication, we expect the D780 to last at least 5 years. If you haven't done so yet, you'll be attracted to new mirrorless cameras during this time.
Should you buy it
If you are still convinced that you need a DSLR, then yes. This is the best in the $ 2,000 price range. Take a moment to consider whether you really need it.

The Galaxy Note 9 improves upon the Note 8 with a Bluetooth S Pen, additional internal capability and RAM, an enormous 4,000 mAh battery, better dual rear cameras with some software system intelligence, increased audio capability, and new placement of the rear fingerprint scanner. While the Galaxy Note 9 offers almost everything you wish, software system updates aren't its specialty. If you wish an android phone which will continuously have the newest firmware and security updates, while additionally providing a reasonably stock experience, then nothing beats the new Google pixel 3 and 3 XL. These 2 smartphones are the exact same apart from the overall size and battery capacity. Google simply released its Night Sight mode for the camera and it's really magic. The smaller pixel 3 starts at $799 whereas the pixel 3 XL starts at $899 for the 64GB model. they're both power-driven by android 9.0 Pie and will receive OS upgrades for 3 years. Google's newest Assistant options are present beside some other Google software package advances.   4. APPLE IPHONE XS MAX/XS
Tumblr media
Apple pushed the entry-level worth of a flagship up to $1,000 last year with the iPhone X and raised the bar once more this year with the most expensive flagship out there in the iPhone XS max. The Apple iPhone XS max has been shown to best all alternative smartphones in benchmarking testing and also the Apple A12 Bionic chipset definitely blazes new trails. it has a superb OLED screen, sensibly sized battery, and new camera software package to make it a really compelling flagship. The iPhone XS max starts at $1,099 for a least storage 64GB model and runs up to $1,449 for the 512GB model. I'll eventually return to the iPhone XS max, but there aren't any Plus-sized optimizations, therefore, it's tough for me to personally justify such a giant device without something special. 5. ONEPLUS 6T
Tumblr media
OnePlus launched the new OnePlus 6T at the tip of October and for the primary time ever it launched on us wireless carrier. OnePlus earns a top-five spot on my list thanks to the high-end specifications, an affordable value that's hundreds less than alternative flagships, very responsive performance, and use of latest technology. If I had a reasonable smartphones list, then the OnePlus 6T would be favorite with prices starting from $549 to $629. the lowest price one still has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage whereas the $629 model has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. you'll not notice another phone with these great specs for these costs. The OnePlus 6T consists of 2 pieces of Gorilla Glass 6 with a metal frame. No other phone out there today uses Gorilla Glass 6. the look is elegant and also the build quality is great. it has a stunning AMOLED 6.41 inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, dual rear cameras (they are a touch underutilized compared to the high-end flagships), ample RAM and internal storage choices, some level of dust and water resistance, a large 3700 mAh battery and quick charge capability, with wonderful radio support for GSM networks. The display contains a very tiny notch, like what we saw on the Essential Phone, and additionally runs the latest version of OxygenOS with very responsive software experience. you can even modify an all-touch interface, the same as the iPhone X. The on-screen fingerprint sensor works well whereas the face unlocks option is handy for fewer secure daily unlocking of your phone.   6. HUAWEI P20 PRO
Tumblr media
While United States of America customers will need to resort to eBay to choose one up, the Huawei P20 Pro remains one of the most exciting smartphones of 2018, even with its new full cousin simply launching in the kind of the Mate 20 pro. The distinctive triple camera design with 68 megapixels worth of shooting power should assist you to take some fantastic shots with a low light mode that beats out all the other smartphones out there these days. Huawei's EMUI has come to a long method and also the home screen now features a standard Google feed on one panel with an interface that's near to stock. when Huawei does offer software system and settings beyond stock android, those serve to boost the device rather than clutter it up and slow it down. The P20 pro flies through each action and is a sheer joy to use. 7. APPLE IPHONE XR
Tumblr media
This year Apple declared 3 new smartphones with one releasing a month after the other 2. I traded in the iPhone XS max for an iPhone XR and overall I'm quite pleased with the device and saving $350 over the iPhone XS max. The Apple iPhone XR differs from the XS/XS max with a LED screen rather than OLED, lower resolution, no 3D touch support (does anyone even care regarding this?), one rear camera, and a 6.1-inch display that fits in between these other 2 new smartphones. it has the same Apple A12 Bionic processor, same camera software and hardware as the 12MP prime camera, and other enhanced Apple features like face unlock. The iPhone XR features a larger capacity battery than the iPhone XS and a reported battery life larger than the XS and XS max. You can purchase the iPhone XR in black, white, blue, yellow, coral, and product Red. The iPhone XR starts at $749, which is $250 less than the 64GB iPhone XS. there's additionally a 128GB model for just $799, which is probably going the most effective deal for the iPhone XR with the iPhone XS 256GB at a whopping $1,149. The cellular reception of the iPhone XR is a bit worse in weak signal areas than the iPhone X models, but iPhones haven't been able to match the cellular reception quality seen in android smartphones. The battery life of the iPhone XR is amazing and also the camera does a good job. for several folks, it's probably one of the simplest iPhones you'll buy today and is more affordable than the new XS and XS max. 8. LG V40 THINQ
Tumblr media
LG continues to release nice smartphones that appreciate over time and in a jammed flagship market, the LG V40 may have a tricky time finding its place also. While Huawei was one of the primary major brands to launch a phone with 3 rear cameras, LG bumped that up by announcing a phone with five total cameras. 3 are found on the rear and 2 are on the front. LG has continuously stood aside from the others with its second rear camera having a real wide-angle lens for excellent landscape and huge room photography. The new LG V40 keeps the wide-angle camera while additionally adding a telephoto lens to the standard lens option thus you'll do exactly regarding anything you would like, including snapping once to take 3 photos, with this new flagship phone. Like the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the LG V40 ThinQ has everything but the sink included. It has a 3.5mm headphone jack with Quad-DAC support, triple rear camera setup, dual front-facing camera, wireless charging, IP68 rating, MIL-STD 810G shock resistant rating, microSD expansion card for inexpensive unlimited storage expansion, a screen that extends nearly the complete front with a notch, and unbelievable audio support with its Boombox loudspeaker system. The 3,300 mAh battery won't get you as far as the top 5 smartphones in this list and is one space that keeps me from using it daily over the long run. 9. SONY XPERIA XZ3
Tumblr media
Sony is back on the ten best lists with its best smartphone in years in the form of the Xperia XZ3. I have been using one for a couple of weeks and although I am not happy with the fingerprint scanner placement it continues to be a compelling smartphone. The Sony Xperia XZ3 matches up on the specification sheet closely with the Google pixel 3 and 3 XL with 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, android 9 Pie, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, 3300 mAh battery, wireless charging, and IP68 dust and water resistance. The Xperia XZ3 features a beautiful curved design with beautiful color options and microSD storage expansion choices. The 6-inch OLED screen looks nice, particularly when viewing video content and experiencing the HDR up-conversion technology. A single 19-megapixel camera is found on the rear with a 13-megapixel shooter on the front. The Sony Xperia XZ3 is out there now for $899.99 from Amazon and Best buy in black, forest green, and white silver. 10. SAMSUNG GALAXY S9/S9 PLUS
Tumblr media
Samsung launched the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus earlier this year. It's an evolution in the Galaxy S line, but one that leads as close to perfection as you'll expect for a smartphone nowadays. Samsung's infinity display continues to impress and earns a close to perfect score like other Samsung displays on the latest Samsung, Apple, and Google smartphones. there's 6GB of RAM, the fastest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 mobile processor, a rear dual aperture camera, another one with super slow motion support (S9 plus only), the ability to feature inexpensive microSD cards, improved Bixby assistant and a hardware button dedicated to its use, Samsung Pay payment technology, wireless and fast charging, IP68 dust and water resistance, a USB Type-C normal port, and traditional 3.5mm headset jack. T-Mobile and Samsung have the best prices with alternative carriers adding extra premiums on top of the MSRP. If you purchase an unlocked one from Samsung it'll not contain carrier bloatware and is priced less than most US carriers too.
