It killed you knowing that ignoring Jiyong meant that you’d ignored your daughter too, but you felt as if you had no choice. Once you were out of sight, your daughter looked to Jiyong with a puzzled expression on her face.

“Why didn’t mummy say hello?” She asked him, unsure where things had gone wrong between you.

A sigh came from Jiyong, annoyed that your daughter had now been brought into your falling out from earlier in the day. “I think mummy is frustrated at daddy because he was a little bit rude to her earlier, she’s staying out of the way.”

Your daughter’s head nodded dejectedly, “will she stay there all night?”

Jiyong’s head shook, although he was far from convinced. “I think she just needs a little bit of time to calm herself down Y/D/N, nothing for you to worry about.”

The smile on her face that had dropped though let Jiyong know that it was something that your daughter was worrying about. Although she was young, she got a lot, especially the awkwardness that was between the two of you.

“What if mummy does stay up there all night long?” She pushed Jiyong, voicing the thoughts that were at the forefront of her mind, “what do the two of us do then?”

“If she does, then we’ll be alright.”

Straight away he could tell that that wasn’t what she wanted at all. As much as she loved Jiyong, she loved it so much more when the two of you were together, cuddling up to her and surrounding her with plenty of love and affection.

“Shall I go and say sorry? What do you reckon?” Jiyong asked her, desperate to fix the smile on her face. “Maybe if daddy goes and says sorry then mummy will come back down to us.”

Your daughter nodded immediately as Jiyong spoke, she wanted him to try anything that he could to make sure that you came back downstairs permanently.

“You can’t leave the room until mummy is back,” she quickly warned him, “I don’t want one of you down here with me, I want both of you down here.”

“I’ll try my best to get mummy to come back down.”

As Jiyong stood up, your daughter stood up with him. “You can’t just try your best daddy; you have to stay until she comes. Understood?”

“I understand, don’t you worry.”

Making his way towards the stairs, Jiyong could only chuckle at how sassy your daughter was. He knew exactly who was responsible for her being that way, but if he was honest, he wouldn’t have your daughter any other way.

It was all that he could think about until he got to the door of the bedroom, finding you sat in the middle of the bed, scrolling through your laptop. Jiyong’s footsteps got quieter and slower as he made his way into the room.

“Y/N, do you have a minute?” Jiyong asked you, “I was hoping that the two of us could try and clear the air a little bit.”

There was no reaction from you as you heard Jiyong’s voice in the doorway, pretending as if he wasn’t there. Although your argument happened some time ago, you were still annoyed, taken aback by what Jiyong had to say.

He knew that what he had said and done was wrong, deciding to take things out on you. He thought nothing of it though, not until he saw the implications that your falling out had on your daughter, then Jiyong knew that things needed to stop.

When you didn’t say anything, Jiyong knew he couldn’t just leave you alone, walking further into the room. Before you knew it, he had sat himself down on the bed beside you, looking at your screen to see what it was that you were looking at. He gave himself a moment before composing himself, nudging against your side gently before moving his hand to rest against the top of your leg to try and listen to him.

“I know that sorry probably isn’t enough for what I said to you earlier, but I really am sorry,” Jiyong told you. “I shouldn’t have said what I said, it was uncalled for, unintentional, and definitely not meant. I guess things got on top of me, and I took it out on you, the one that I love.”

“All I tried to do was help you, instead it felt like I was being pushed away like the old days.”

Jiyong cringed as you compared him to the Jiyong that you knew at the start of your relationship, never wanting to return those days. He had a habit of closing you out back then, and this morning spooked you into thinking that had returned.

“I didn’t want to burden you, I thought you had enough on your plate with work and dealing with Y/D/N. When you kept pushing, I just shut down and took it out on you, but I should’ve remembered that you’re incredible and could have listened to what I was worrying about too.”

“I’ve always helped you with anything, you should know that better than anyone else Jiyong,” you reminded him.

His head nodded in agreement as his grip against your leg tightened too. “I’m sorry that I was rude to you, I’m sorry that I said something like that, but most of all I’m sorry right now that this is bothering Y/D/N too, I never want for that to be the case for her.”

The mention of your daughter’s name soon reminded you of what was most important to you. The feeling of walking past her crept back up on you, unable to bring yourself to see the hurt that was in her eyes as you passed her by.

“Can you promise me one thing to come from today, Jiyong? Can you promise that you’ll talk to me, that you won’t ever fear of being too much for me?”

“I can,” he smiled, watching your head come down to rest against his shoulder. “But if there’s one thing that you can do for me too, or for us, it’s come downstairs. You’ve got a daughter who is absolutely desperate to see you Y/N.”

Your head nodded back at him straight away, pushing the lid of your laptop down. Jiyong slowly shuffled off the bed, holding his hand out for you to take it, allowing him to help you up and onto your feet.

“Y/D/N wants you to stay downstairs too this time around,” Jiyong added once you were up.

Your hand tapped against his chest, “I’ll be down there for all night long, neither of you have to worry about that.”

“I’m glad of that too, because she’ll be getting hungry too, and we all know that me and the kitchen aren’t a good combination,” Jiyong joked.

“I agree, it’s a recipe for disaster.”

So, in Guards! Guards! one of my favorite sequences of events is the watch waiting on the roof so Colon can shoot the dragon with a bow and arrow.

And while this scene is great for the twisted humor of self awareness that these characters have, it's actually a really good deconstruction of stakes in writing.

Not only is this a fairly tense moment for the book, right in the height of the dragon's plans to enact ritual human sacrifice, but the watch almost dies in their attempt. One might think it's the comedy aspect of the story that keeps them alive (or Carrot being built like a brick house), because people of importance seldom die in comedies, but it really isn't. It's the stakes that keep them alive.

Raising the stakes in a story changes the likelihood of character death. Colon, by all accounts, could have died, as could Nobby, and debatably Carrot if you look at G!G! in isolation. None of them have the narrative weight of Vimes or Sybil in this book, and they could all be considered expendable (though Carrot to a lesser degree, as he was specifically introduced by the narrative to be a "hero"). When the stakes are highest, someone is the most likely to die doing something good. But the watch also knows that when the stakes are high and the odds are against someone doing a noble thing, that action has the highest narrative likelihood of success. The phrase "it'd never work, it's a million-to-one chance" being their goalpost inspires them to artificially lower the odds of their success when the stakes are high. But in so doing, they lower the stakes by acknowledging that it's entirely possible that Colon could kill the dragon, even if it's unlikely, and his odds of him certainly killing the dragon are higher if his odds of maybe killing the dragon are lower (if that makes sense; granted, if you've read the book you probably get it).

Anyway, this adjustment of odds to make the chances of success higher (by making them lower) lowers the stakes of the book when it is at its most tense and signals what I call a "descent into absurdity." And while that may sound like a bad thing, it is one of my favorite parts of Discworld. Things are rectified in absurdity, because functioning is absurd, and the goal in most of these books is to be "functional". E.g., Vetinari's whole goal is to keep Ankh-Morpork functional, and he does so by being the most absurd sort of untouchable dictator possible. The man pays people to try and kill him, spreads rumors about himself, builds a prison only he knows how it really works, governs intelligent rat societies, and is perhaps the only character in the whole book that doesn't fear the most fearsome creature there is. He functions and the city functions because they are absurd.

Absurdity lowers stakes, while increasing chances of character success. It is how comedy almost always resolves. But absurdity only begins to descend upon narrative after the failure of the logical. Logical solutions will always fail when the illogical and comical is fated to happen. And a city built on absurdity will always be fated to be saved in the most illogical ways possible. And that is a wonderful thing.

Of course the watch would never be able to shoot down a draco nobilis, even in the most absurd way possible. Especially not when the stakes are as high as they are. But you think, for a moment, as they embrace absurdity and twist this logical attempt into an illogical one, that they might actually do something helpful. It just turns out that that something helpful is to begin the descent. And they survive this otherwise incredibly dangerous scenario because they embraced the absurd and lowered the stakes.

A singular rite in the life of a tabletop designer is the creation of their D&D heartbreaker. I’ve held off on it personally, in part by making near-misses like RADCrawl, but the siren song has proven to be a little too powerful and thus I’ve started on extremely temporarily named BL-G Hack. It is just coincidence that I’m additionally trying out blogging at the same time, after reading a Twitter (X?) thread with discussion of how much in the indie space is lost to Discord.

I’m starting from a framework of what I want the game to feel like and how I want to work on the game.

What I Want The Game To Feel Like

In terms of the table experience, I want the game to feel like playing a mostly theater of the mind D&D. I’m a huge 4e apologist, but for this I want to try to capture what it felt like to play D&D as a kid and we goofed around with world and city maps, but didn’t usually get out the grid for combat. I want to evoke some of the Catalogue TTRPG feeling, but ideally with choosing things pretty quickly. I want for characters to feel powerful and be able to do cool things, without feeling like bags of HP.

There’s definitely some merging of PbtA and D&D that I’m aiming for; but I don’t want it to feel like PbtA. I’m aiming for resolution systems that give interesting results, not full on Moves. You roll d20s.

I want to have players battling monsters and feeling like badasses. I want the game to feel ‘gamey.’ I’m developing a set of toys that tell a fantasy story.

I want to simultaneously have the joy and excitement of playing a West Marches game while avoiding the feeling of ‘go out and conquer.’ I love looking at a map, exploring it, battling things, and grabbing riches… but I don’t want to casually recreate the same approach of D&D of ‘orcs are evil, we are allowed to take their stuff.’ Balancing that is a little fiddly, but I think I have a solution that I am comfortable with.

How I Want To Build This Game

I want to approach this game in the style of blogs, Dragon magazine, and tiny splat books of the 3.5 era. Scenarios, skills, abilities, classes, monsters, etc should be able to be relatively stand alone; the kind of thing that I can sit down and crunch something out over the span of a lunch break or two. I think I’m going to try to keep barrier to entry on this low, the intent is to let people explore what kind of D&D I like to play.

That said, I’m aiming to be able to after initial release have some fun with zine-size releases that give some locations, some monsters, class options, etc. I’m actually truly hoping to get a group together to actually PLAY this game and have that playing inform design… but, let’s stay realistic here.

Core Systems

So, without further delay… the first bites of The BL-G Hack.

Characters have stats, probably six of them, probably the same D&D stats. When a roll is called for, the player rolls at least a d20 and tries to get under their stat for a hit. A basic roll is d20, a proficient roll is 2d20, and there may be higher bonus dice than that.

One hit (rolling under your stat) gives you a partial, marginal, or barely managed success. Two hits (rolling twice under your stat or your stat exactly) is a full hit, a heroic hit. Three or more hits (rolling thrice under your stat or an exact roll plus an under) is a truly superheroic hit.

Characters have classes, which give them proficiency in some scenarios which allows them to roll two d20s instead of one. They also give them a couple of Abilities that allow them to do cool things and a table for starting equipment. When characters level up, they’ll get new abilities which can come from any class or situational ones. Character classes will be specific (think prestige classes from 3.5 rather than base classes), but hopefully pretty mix and match.

Between adventures, are Map Phase and Company Phase. The GM will run the Map Phase where dark forces move, quests and landmarks are added, and the map is revealed by the player’s actions. Additionally, some player abilities will allow them to be invited to Map Phase or give input into Map Phase. Company Phase is run by the players, where they can share equipment, spend gold to roll for purchases, and take downtime activities.

Call to Adventure

The world is misted in a choking miasma; remnants from the Shattering when the death of gods sent magic running wild, slaughtering and corrupting all it burned over. In few seats of power the mages who did not succumb to the falling produced the Dimlight crystals that hold back the corruption and prevented all life from being burned out. The spells that produce these Dimlight artifacts destroyed the mages who cast them, turning their bodies into haunting, crystaline statues that radiate safety. In larger cities, where mages worked in circles, the protection may extend over neighborhoods. In rural areas, where only a single adept worked the protection may be as little as a room.

The world in miasma is dangerous; elemental monsters and corrupted humanity feeds on all who dare delve into the mist. The very air stings to breathe where Dimlight doesn’t clarify it and can have worse effects. There are refugees in the miasma and small enclaves that have gained access to Dimlight, but most are clinging to a solitary existance separate from the world. Those who live in cities where Dimlight is more plentiful have can live more normal lives, though communication with other cities and wealth remain exclusive to the hands of nobles and the wealthiest merchants.

The world just changed; Dimlight has been miniaturized. A new generation of Dimlight spells can be created without killing it’s user and requiring significantly less space for the artificial crystal. Dimlight torches offer the greatest possibility, an opportunity for adventurers to delve into the miasma and destroy the godsplinters that corrupt the land. The world is still dangerous, even when the miasma pulls back the monsters remain. But there is no end to the treasures that could be gained; abandoned riches, incredible power, and reclaiming homes long lost.

Roadmap

Currently I've got this, four out of five starting character classes, and some ideas that I've got to get into paper. The actual PDF of it is probably a little bit off, but I'm hoping to have an accessible, playable version available soon.
