𖦹 yn is a recent art school dropout, working at the shop to pay rent. been there for about 6 months, is no longer the baby of the group. 𖦹 her dream job is to be a cartoonist or animator of some kind. she has a somewhat popular strip called lost planet. her fanbase is niche and small but they would die for her. 𖦹 heavily inspired by krazy kat's art style, calvin and hobbes' humor, and cul-de-sac's eclectic characters. 𖦹 she drew the short end of the stick and works graveyards a lot, so she draws a lot of her stuff during work. ukai doesn't care. 𖦹 is a satin black regular despite the obvious canonical problems. shes one of omis very few clients.

nishinoya yu

𖦹 got hired at kumonoue a week before yn did, so he was never really considered the baby. he contributes the most to the newbie jokes though, which makes yn so mad. 𖦹 he doesn't really have a reason for working here, he just needed a job and they were hiring. he likes it though, because there's always something to do or someone to watch. 𖦹 noya and yn are the definition of opposites attract. they cling to each other like parasites. he's floated the idea of splitting an apartment and once yns rent is up she is absolutely taking him up on that. 𖦹 he is lost planet's biggest fan, and has a bottle of very cheap champagne waiting for the day she gets a deal. one of the only people that gets to see yns personal comics.

akaashi keiji

𖦹 doing an unpaid internship at an editing company, so he got this job so that he wouldn't have to live with his parents. he lives with bokuto because they are canon in every universe. 𖦹 been working at kumonoue for a year and a half. he's been there the longest and is technically a manager. he loves the job but CAN'T STAND BEING MANAGER. 𖦹 he edits lost planet! they have a mutual exchange; she doesnt pay him for his work but he gets to use it in his portfolio (he would have done it anyways because he truly believes in her talent and wants to see her succeed).

hinata shoyo

𖦹 works here because ukai was complaining that he needed more workers during a practice one day. hinata took that as volun-telling, so he applied that night. 𖦹 he's the only part time worker, full time during the off-seasons. he doesnt really need the job but he loves the cloud 20 group so even if he did quit nothing would really change. 𖦹 he desperately wants the group to hang out outside of work events or in the group chat. he's getting very close to wearing them all down!

bodega cat

𖦹 kumonoue has an adopted cat. yn loves the cat. no one else likes the cat. the cats name is bodega cat. they do not work at a bodega. 𖦹 yn had a bad day once and got bodega cat a collar with a tag. the contact for if bodega cat goes missing is akaashi. he does not know this.

ukai kenshin & kumonoue market

𖦹 is the owner of kumonoue, but he's barely there. he trusts them all enough to not burn it down, so he spends his time at other locations or coaching.

fun facts!

𖦹 ukai's store in canon is named sakanoshita, which means 'under the slope'. kumonoue means 'above the clouds'.

𖦹 this is how the cloud 20 gc got their name. yn asked if ukai smokes cigarettes or joints, which lead to a joke about naming the store while on cloud 9. noya elevated that to cloud 10, but hinata didn't think that was dramatic enough so he made it 20.

𖦹 they have several jars for the counter. swear jar, stupid customer jar, failed flirting jar, bodega cat knocking over the jars jar. you name it, they've had it.

𖦹 despite the sometimes intimidating workers, kumonoue has a really great reputation in their community and a lot of lovely regulars. yn is the best at remembering orders and can ring people up before they approach.

Hi! Sorry if you have already answered this somewhere, I love reading about your writing process for Opus and was wondering if you would talk about how you pick and choose which missions to assign Sam and Kaidan, like Kaidan taking on the Project Overlord mission? Also, lol, will Sam ever have the misfortune of driving a Hammerhead and how much would he hate it?

Hahahahaha, Sam would hate the Hammerhead so much. I will probably spare him that displeasure, given how much else he has to deal with.

This is such an awesome question; thank you so much for asking it, and I am so sorry this answer is probably far more involved than you were looking for.

Stories like Cantata, Fugue, and Kaidan's portion of Mezzo necessitated missions that weren't main plot for the trilogy. But since the codex is so rich and there are so many side missions across the three games, I made it an unwritten rule that I wouldn't make up a mission from thin air if I could help it. Instead I'd pull something from canon and twist it into a new shape. That put less pressure on me to invent something from scratch, and it meant fun Easter eggs for the reader.

This has taken different shapes. In Cantata, the mission where Sam experiences a blood sugar crash in mid-combat was going to be heavy on action, which meant a fairly elaborate "combat chess board." Designing a visual setting is one of my big weaknesses as a writer, so I set it on Benning because I could then use the ME3MP map as a template to craft the rest of the mission around.

The underwater mission Sam does on Proteus is what it is because the codex states that combat diving is part of the N program. I thought that was cool, and while perusing planets in the codex, the description for Proteus included an underwater colony. "Great!" I said to myself. "What if I broke it?"

Virtually every place the Yang Gang visits in Cantata is pulled straight from canon, as well as what they find there. It's something I'm pretty proud of.

(The big exception is the thresher maw on Sharjilla, which is pure artistic liberty, but I am beyond delighted that people have played that mission expecting to find one because of Cantata. At one point I had planned a really great joke where Sam nukes the thresher maw from orbit out of pure spite, so when they come back to Sharjila in ME1 and Kaidan mentions threshers, someone could go, "wait, there's thresher maws down there?!" and Sam would growl under his breath, "not anymore." But I couldn't fit it into Cantata, lol.)

As for all the side missions I've woven in, they provide a neat opportunity to spread the love. They are Shepard's responsibility in the games because Shepard is the player character, so the entire world revolves around them. In fic, I don't have that constraint, so I am free to take missions that have some good narrative potential and give them to other characters.

Side quests like Bring Down the Sky don't offer much to the canon plot, but for Opus it provided an opportunity for some pretty sharp character development while also advancing my reimagined plans for ME3.

In the case of Overlord, I loved the complexity it would add to something like Horizon: if Kaidan got a first hand glimpse at the terrible things Cerberus does right before discovering Shepard on Horizon, suddenly his distrust and anger take on new meaning.

Kasumi became Kaidan's partner in crime because the cast of ME2 is so dense that I went looking for ways to weed down the cast without having to just leave people out or inflict mass casualties. Kasumi's skillset as a thief never made sense to me for something like the suicide mission, but Kasumi herself is a delight. And like Kaidan, she has experienced the death of a partner. They seemed like such a natural fit for each other, and Keiji's role as a double agent with the Alliance also worked narratively in my favor: I got to use him to answer questions like, "how the hell does Cerberus get their hands on the Normandy design docs?"

Fugue also incorporates a few ME2 side missions that, again, just dovetailed nicely into what I was trying to do. Superimposing Keiji over the Cerberus agent in N7: Lost Operative just worked well for what I wanted to do, and N7: Imminent Ship Crash gave me a good segue into it, while also giving me the chance to explore how Kara and Aslany dealt with the loss of the 'Yang.

So how I choose what missions I use comes down to what I need for the story. I have a vague idea of what I need to accomplish, then look for a side mission or DLC that can help me get there. The Hammerhead DLC missions are utterly terrible to play, but there is just enough of an interesting story to them that I was able to weave something useful to future Opus plans while also letting Kaidan grow into his role as a leader.

The DLC and side missions are really fun to work with, and one of my favorite parts of Opus, even if I almost went bald tearing my hear out over N7: Imminent Ship Crash. XD

YTTD does something really really interesting with the Sara/Keiji dynamic that I absolutely adore: namely that whenever it - or specifically Keiji's side in it - is questioned, the game itself provides the answers without directly stating them

In chapter 1 we all sat there like "why is this whole ass adult who is 10 years older than Sara and, allegedly, a fucking COP, putting this literal 17 year old wannabe samurai in charge of their survival?"

Chapter 2 reveals he can literally see what's going on inside a person at as little as a glance, an ability he inadvertently teaches Sara to emulate. So obviously he'd put the person with the coolest head in charge, even if it's a high school student, cuz he doesn't trust himself for shit. At first it's, as Kai says, cuz she and Joe can vouch for each other but once he gets to know and can start to read her? She's the boss now.

Does he actually trust her or is he just using her? Chapter 2 comes in with the steel chair of "oh he doesn't trust her cuz he doesn't trust himself, but he WANTS to trust her and he genuinely cares for her. Look how he tries to keep her hallucinations in check cuz he understands this situation, look how he opens up to her after realising he hurt her, look how he is literally putting his life in her hands by giving her the Keymaster". Like, yeah, he's not someone who can trust easily, and he definitely started this game using her, but he's clearly making an effort when he doesn't have to and the game doesn't need to spell it out to make it obvious.

The plan didn't require for Sara to have the Keymaster, they just have to know where it is, but he hands it to Sara. "This is my life, please take good care of it". Especially poignant after Sara told him that getting someone to trust you requires trusting them first. He hurt her by showing he doesn't trust her but she's made it clear she does trust him and now he wants to earn that trust by giving her his own, no matter how hard that is for him.

Why does he still constantly lie to her? Cuz Sara can't lie for shit, he says so himself, the game shows it constantly. "Do you have the sacrifice?" "*most obvious reaction on the fucking planet*" She literally can't lie if her life depends on it so he does it for her. She can't lie about something she doesn't know the truth of and he's very good at lying.

Oh no, there's ONE human from Asunaro in the group?! The thing they've been afraid of since the first floor has been confirmed on floors 4 and 5?! It can't be Kai anymore, he's dead. It can't be Q-taro, he's way too open about his orphanage being managed by Asunaro. Reko or Alice? Yeah, unlikely. Gin or Kanna/Sou? Yeah, get real. That leaves Keiji, right? WRONG. It's Hinako, and cuz Floor Masters can't lie, there is now NO humans from Asunaro within the group.

Does he actually care about her or just her ability to save them? Well, first off, during the Sub-Game, if you loose Spirit Shutter with him he tries to get the dolls to kill him first. Then during the doll house he risks his and Q-taro's plan for the Banquet two times for Sara and chooses death for her.

After Ranmaru's fake announcement he abandons all stealth to make sure she's safe and his freak out over her falling unconscious was not faked. And then during the Banquet he risks exposing himself by trying to reassure her over the radio. Both of these are profoundly idiotic things to do if his main goal was to keep as many alive as possible. It's not tho, he's out to protect Sara above all and what happens to him in that doesn't matter.

Not to mention that Ranmaru accusing him of being the reason Sara is there in the first place is the one time he completely drops the blasé act cuz doing something to hurt Sara is something he just can't see himself do.

And full disclosure, I doubt he is even cognizant that he's slipped into this. He saw her cry once and then all bets were off, big brother/dad mode engage, all hands on deck, baby girl must be protected at a costs.

Hell, he would rather die by extremely painful execution than let Sara live with the guilt of killing Gin for him. And, being the Curious Cat that I am, I have tried to do just that to see what happens. The answer is, nothing happens. You can try multiple times and Keiji will stop Sara from going through with it every single time. At that point he has no idea he's actually safe because Q-taro's in his coffin, but he calmly tells Sara that it's okay. He literally chooses death to keep her hands clean.

And that the most manipulative members of the cast make it a point to mention again and again how precious Sara is to him, and that it's also mentioned multiple times that he's the one Sara trusts the most is another can of worms all together.

The only times Midori's manipulations of Sara actually affect her enough to waver are because he threatens Keiji to get to her and if no one had interfered - Ranmaru first and Keiji the last time - it would have ended badly for her in more ways than one.

It just gets me that despite everything, the trust issues and lies and fear, Sara and Keiji are a package deal now, basically were a package deal the moment they met

Oda forces.

Nobunaga Oda.

You were clearly excited about this, which made Nobunaga curious about what this ‘Star Wars’ thing was about. He was definitely intrigued by the concept of a battle in the stars.

Imagine his awe at discovering what space is and seeing the battle scenes. Which would make Nobunaga want to own a spaceship.

Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

Hideyoshi was genuinely confused as to the chronological order of the movies, which led to Sasuke having to explain to him that this way was easier to understand the story.

Just imagine Hideyoshi thinking that, in this universe, Nobunaga would the the Anakin. He truly admires his lord. Though he thinks that the violence in these movies is too much for you, you are too young to be watching it.

Ieyasu Tokugawa.

Ieyasu though that there were way too many movies and episodes to Star Wars, though the different species from different planets did fascinate him.

He doesn’t like the flashing lights though. You might tease him about being an old man for it, which will make Ieyasu glare at you.

Masamune Date.

Masamune was excited when he saw the light sabers, liking how they could melt and burn anything. He even considered how cool it would be to use one during battle.

Needless to say that he would join MC and Sasuke during their pretend battle with light saber toys. Being his little sister will be no excuse for him to take it easy on you.

Mitsuhide Akechi.

Mitsuhide will enjoy the series, though there is a lot of information to take in, all of which Mitsuhide found intriguing.

Both you and Sasuke agree that, if Mitsuhide existed in the Star Wars universe, he would mix between the forces of good and evil. Of course, his interests would lie with the forces of good.

Mitsunari Ishida.

Mitsunari was glued to the screen, finding everything fascinating. You could say that he was quickly becoming a fan of it. What most fascinated him was the vast amount of different creatures.

Needless to say that he would be asking questions every now and then since some concepts were unknown to them. It was funny to you since Mitsunari really seemed like an old man.

Ranmaru Mori.

Ranmaru would sometimes get spooked by the movies, since sometimes it would get dark. But overall he was fascinated by the vast world in it.

He wouldn’t like to be in a spaceship or have light sabers like the other warlords, though. Those things frightened him. He will also be concerned as to why someone so young like you watched this movie series.

Keiji.

Keiji is part of the warlords that would get pretty excited about story of the movies, it had a rich story and world building, something he never seen before.

He would, just like Masamune, pretend to play with the others with fake light sabers. Keiji will tease you about being too much of a brat to watch this trilogy.

Uesugi-Takeda alliance.

Kenshin Uesugi.

Kenshin is a bit of a… dangerous man to show this movie trilogy. If he can make a whole mafia group obey him upon arriving to the modern era, just imagine how dangerous he would be inside the Star Wars universe? Of course, you are just showing him the movie, but Kenshin would definitely get excited about light sabers and such.

You and Sasuke get a bit scared of Kenshin’s grin when a fight scene appears.

Shingen Takeda.

Shingen will certainly find the story and universe unique and fascinating, being drawn into the movies. He was constantly cheering for the forces of good to prevail, while comparing the forces of evil with Nobunaga.

He genuinely wondered if he could build some of the fascinating structures seen in the movies, the answer was no. Every time a violent scene appears, shingen will put his hand over your eyes. He can’t let his young sister to see such horrific scenes.

Yukimura Sanada.

Yukimura is certain to like the movie trilogy. At first, everything confused him, but he grew to enjoy it a lot. The fight scenes made him excited as they looked cool, Sasuke was definitely very happy that his bestie shared interests with him. You will be happy that your big brother also likes something you enjoy.

Yoshimoto Imagawa.

Yoshimoto wasn’t much of a fan, though he will find the different outfits interesting. If it were up to him, he could make them more beautiful. And he had to admit, the different sceneries from different planets captivated him.

Another thing he liked was the possibility of traveling while being surrounded by stars. He might use you as a model, he just loves spoiling his young sister with new outfits.

Sasuke.

It is pretty obvious that Sasuke has already seen and likes Star Wars, but he will watch it all over again if it means he can show all the warlords. You both organized it so that they could watch it.

Kanetsugu.

It will take some convincing to get Kanetsugu to watch Star Wars with you, like doing the puppy eyes. Forced, Kanetsugu will watch the movies with you, and will get very intrigued by it.

Lone forces.

Kennyo.

You insisted that Kennyo would watch it with you, to which he was apprehensive. But he couldn’t say no to his little sister, so he eventually agrees. Kennyo finds it all overwhelming but fascinating. Specially the different life forms that live in each planet.

You might end up comparing him with Yoda, which will make Kennyo confused as he does not speak with sentences out of order.

Kichou.

By chance, Kichou already knew about the movie series, but he only knew so much. Which is why you introduced the whole trilogy for him to see. He won’t be too interested in it, but will watch the whole thing to make his little sister happy.

Motonari Mouri.

Motonari won’t want to watch it at first, but then will get excited to watch everything about it. He definitely liked many concepts that Star Wars had, specially the possibility of traveling not just to different countries but planets.

You joke that he would definitely use the red light saber, to which he calls you a brat.

Premise: Akaashi Keiji falls in love with a single mother and realizes she's all he wants for his life.

Chapter 2: Our story

You glanced around the restaurant, the smell of fresh pizza making its way up your nostrils, and it lights up everyone in your party. You chose a large table that would fit the four of you, right by a large window. You ended up ordering the biggest cheese pizza available and four milkshakes, to your surprise the four of you wanted nothing more than a chocolate milkshake, causing the server to chuckle at the cute display of all your hands pointing at the very same picture all at once. You talked just about everything during your meal, The weather; Different varieties of French toast; Whales migration patterns; The obnoxious purple shoes with feathers that Sakamoto mama was wearing, Seiji fully convinced they were real and probably from a rare bird now endangered. Such a nice way to spend an afternoon, you thought, would have never guessed such a horrible morning would turn into this.

With both toddlers now full and happy, you were staring at your watch, you didn’t want to take more of Akaashi’s time any further, it could potentially cause him troubles back home. But your five-year-old had other plans, “Mama.” Seiji got up from his seat and walked over to your side, reading your actions, he got his puppy eyes full on display, “Oh god, what now?” you heaved a sigh. That face. He wants something. “When we were walking all the way here, I noticed there was a park that had a ginormous elephant slide. Did you know elephants are Kimi’s favorite animal?” he questions you like one of those kid shows he watches in animal planet, and you decided to play along gasping dramatically “Are they really??? Then this must be destiny, we definitely need to check out that park. Am I right, Akaashi-san?” you held back a laugh trying to stay in character and turning to look at a Akaashi who was sitting beside you and to your surprise, he was staring at you, hard, for no apparent reason, making your cheeks turn a bit rosy, “Oh yes, destiny. I agree.” you blinked at his lack of dramatics that somehow ended up flustering you just a bit. So, you got up, hauling everyone out of the shop while Akaashi took care of the bill that he refused to share with you.

You waited outside of the shop for him to come out, getting Seiji’s and Kimi’s sweater out of their school bags and helping both to get in them. Akaashi motioned his hand for Kimi to take it and you began walking over to the park that was a couple of blocks on the opposite direction.

“So, what’s destiny…?” Akaashi whispered near your ear for the kids not to hear, making you laugh, “Were you not paying attention? Then why were you staring…?” you wipe a tear from your eyes, you’ve been laughing a lot today, that’s new. It feels good.

“Oh, um” he coughs, looking to the side to avoid your eyes. Taking this as confirmation that he was indeed not paying attention, you keep going, looking ahead “Well you see that elephant right there?” you pointed at the park now in front of you and he nods, “That’s destiny.” You chuckled at his confused expression, not wanting to elaborate any more as a punishment for not paying attention, but he shrugs and walks faster as he noticed his daughter about to go on a craze at the look of the big slide now in front for everyone to see. “Seiji” he says in a commanding voice, making your son look at him like it was the most natural thing in the world, “You are in charge now, don’t let Kimi get hurt.” the child puffed his chest out and attempted to salute like the soldiers he saw in a movie last night. “Yes, sir! Please take care of my mom while I’m gone.” he declared bowing deeply, before running over to the little girl and taking her hand in his as they made their way over to the slide.

You didn’t notice but you were smiling brightly at the scene, this is what you would have pictured a lovely afternoon with Atsumu and your son would be like. Pizza, some fun at the park, all of you laughing and having fun. Of course, that never happened.  

Akaashi did notice your beautiful smile, and he suddenly forgot how to breathe. He is new to this kind of reactions. After finishing high school, he was so focused on his studies and then trying to get into a good company that he hasn’t really had the time to date anyone. No one has really even gotten his attention at all, which was weird for his age, he thought. But these things happening to his heart today are out of the norm, and he is well aware of what’s going on, even if this would be his first.

“Let’s go sit over there” you pointed at a set of swings close to the slide, holding your hair away from your face in response to a breeze hitting you from the side, “We can see what they’re doing from there.” he nods and followed you, letting you choose your swing first. He remembered when he was a kid and girls would start crying if someone else sat on the color they wanted to sit on, probably a girl’s thing. You chose the third farther to the right, a pink one. Getting him to internally scream at how cute you are, he’s glad he remembered this piece of little girls’ information that somehow still lived in his memory, otherwise he would have missed this adorable look on your face right now, like if you just won a race. Made him feel the need to punch something, he was beginning to scare himself off a bit.

Akaashi chose the swing right next to yours and heaved a sigh looking at his daughter, currently on Seiji’s lap as they go down the slide together, she is such a handful and he is so sweet with her, it eases him knowing she has someone to look after her when she’s in school. This reminds him, “I wanted to apologize for her behavior,” he said in a low voice, still looking at the children play, “She…she doesn’t have a mother. I think when she saw you, somehow it clicked for her that you were probably her mother too. She’s never seen a picture of the real one so she still thinks one day she will just appear in front of her and shower her with attention and love, which you did today.” he shakes his head, looking down. “I know I should have said something to her and clarify it right there, but she looked so happy in your arms. I’ve never seen her smile like that…” he trails in deep thought, waving a hand through his messy black locks.

You could physically hear your heart cracking at his words, but you felt like you wanted to know more, “Can I….can I ask what happened?” you spoke softly, not wanting to over step any boundaries. And Akaashi has never felt such warmth from someone’s voice, he could feel your concern, you were worried, sad even, for someone you just met. He nods and continues with the story “Kimi’s mother and I were never really a thing. We both ended up in a party, pushed by mutual friends. The organizing team of said party had very crazy ideas in mind, spiking everyone's drinks with unspeakable things and the night ended up being a blackout for everybody, me included. I woke up next to a girl I never met in my life, both of us half naked. She was as horrified as I was, and we both awkwardly left without a word to each other, so I didn’t even get her name.” you listened quietly, holding onto the swing, your grip was strong, turning your knuckles white at the thought of someone playing such an awful prank on a big crowd. This is why you didn’t like going to parties.  

“Six months later she comes and finds me after one of my lectures and tells me she’s pregnant, that she was a virgin until that night, and she was positive that it was mine. I was skeptical but I couldn’t just snap at a pregnant lady…” this made you huff out a sad laugh, inevitably thinking of your own fate when you were in that situation and how differently your boyfriend reacted to the news. Your reaction confused him but he kept talking, not wanting to make uncomfortable questions, “I gave her my phone number and told her to reach out to me if she needed anything and after that she never really did, until one night I got a call at 3AM from a hospital, saying she had given my number as an emergency contact before going into labor and she was in a critical condition and needed an emergency C-section, whatever that is” he looked down once more trying to organize his thoughts, he never really thinks about these things nor dwells on the past, so he isn’t sure if he is missing details, but his thought process was cut short when he felt your hand on top of his, a reassuring gesture. He could feel it again. Your sadness. This encouraged him to speak up again, you thought he was sad, but he wasn’t and for some reason he wanted you to know that. “When I arrived at the hospital she had already passed away, and Kimi was in an incubator. When I saw her, I just knew it, you know? She was definitely mine” you choked back a sob, nodding in understanding. You really wished Atsumu had given you that chance. The chance to see his son and realize what he had done. Akaashi was now the one holding onto your hand, rubbing circles onto the back of it. He’s never met someone so expressive before and wished he could be just a tiny bit like you. “They had to draw some blood out to make sure I was indeed her father before handing her out to me since the mother didn’t have time to fill out any info, but after that it’s been just the two of us. I don’t really have much to say to her about her mother, cuz’ I didn’t really know her at all, so I avoid the topic. But she’s been asking a lot lately, I suppose she’s seen a lot of mothers picking her classmates up from school and that made her want hers.”

Both of you fell into a comfortable silence, still holding hands and looking onto your beautiful children chasing some pigeons. You had stopped crying by now, focusing all your attention on his story, there was no time for self-pity right now.

Akaashi furrows his brows looking back at Seiji, “I know this is weird and probably with a horribly bad timing, but I feel like I’ve seen your son somewhere”, he rakes his brain thinking, this makes you laugh as he death-glares the running toddler. He’s coming to realize he likes the sound of your laugh, its like a breath of fresh air in a sunny day. Makes him forget his worries and makes him want to hear it again. “Of course, you have! Seiji has been in the same school as your daughter for a month!” he shakes his head, still deep in thought, “No, that’s not it. Is like he looks like someone I know but I don’t know who”. You hum a bit before answering, not really wanting to talk about him at this moment but not seeing a way around it, he would find out at some point anyways if you were to continue seeing each other after today, “Well, his father is a famous volleyball player, maybe you saw him on tv?”

This makes Akaashi stand from the swing, looking at you like if you had two heads, “Baka Miya! I mean, the blond one.” he blinks at you, trying to correct himself to not offend you in any way while his brain was running miles an hour at the thought of someone he never really liked and suddenly hated with all his guts.

You burst out into a fit of giggles, sadness long forgotten, “Yup that’s him. He really looks like his dad, doesn’t he?” you scrunched up your nose with distaste, kicking some tiny rocks at your feet avoiding looking up at him.

Akaashi hums in acknowledgement, “Well yeah, he does. But thankfully he has your smile.” he states before sitting back on the swing, eyeing you carefully, he wanted to know more, but how to ask- Are you two still together? Why do you look so sad? Does he have a chance with you at all? If you are maybe he can coax you into leaving him, he sucks anyways.

“My smile?” you looked at him bewildered, pulling him out of his rambling thoughts.

His smile is what reminds you the most of Atsumu, how could it be your smile?

He just nods with a straight face, didn’t seem like he was buttering you up, he really meant it. “Yeah, you kindda scrunch up your face when you laugh and your eyes disappear under your bangs, you both do the same. It’s cute.” he mumbles the last part quietly, but you hear it. You are over the moon right now; Did you really look like Seiji when he laughs? Is the first time you are hearing this. Not being able to stop the big smile plastered on your face, you decided to go back to the conversation instead of teasing him. “So, you’ve seen Atsumu play?” you keep on kicking the rocks at your feet, waiting for his reply, “Well, more than seeing him, I’ve played against him during high school, and he plays for the same team now as my oldest volleyball high school friend, so yeah, I know the guy. Though, I’m just surprised his dna could bring a child like Seiji to the world. He was never the brightest bulb in the room, you know? So that’s most likely something else that he got from you.” he offers you the smallest smile you’ve seen in your life, but its somehow so comforting, and adorable.

He is so handsome.

You return his smile, enjoying his praises, you know Seiji is very smart and you take pride in that, but you didn’t feel like bragging, your heart aches a little bit right now, “Yeah, well he’s never been around. Seiji’s never met him either so that’s probably why.” you nodded to your own words trying your hardest not to cry for the second time in the first date you’ve had in ages. Swallowing hard, you meet Akaashi’s eyes, but his expression was troubled, like if you were speaking to him in a different language he just couldn’t comprehend. “He hasn’t? But how? I mean we are all here in Tokyo…and wait, What?? Did he just break up with you while you were pregnant? Is that why you were so sad during my story? It reminded you of yourself?” he was a blunt one, you noticed it earlier but weren’t expecting this kind of questions when you signed up for a pizza date.

Your heart felt so heavy, but he did tell you all his story just now and it wasn’t exactly a happy one, you wanted to return the vote of confidence you received from the not so much of a stranger anymore that sits beside you. “Hmmm… yeah, he did. He thought I was cheating on him as I was suddenly pregnant and we always used protection, so he just left to never come back” Akaashi was left speechless, why would someone do that? He knows Miya is stupid but that goes beyond stupidity. You aren’t just the most beautiful woman he’s ever met; you are also very smart, funny and a wonderful mother. Even if he was scared, it’s a ridiculous decision on his part and he suddenly felt guilty for thinking about how glad he is that Miya is in fact an idiot. “I tried reaching over to him once more when Seiji was born, like you said, just by looking at him you can see that he is his son” Akaashi nodded, it was unmistakable, “But he had deactivated his old phone number and moved from the apartment we shared, Osamu had also gone away and I just….well I just thought I had to move on for my son’s sake. So, I moved to Tokyo wanting to start fresh again.” You let a sad chuckle out, shaking your head at the irony of like, “Jokes on me, he thought the same thing and also moved to Tokyo. But thankfully it’s a big city, never seen him around”.

He didn’t like the look on your face. He could literally see you roaming over your head with memories of your old lover. It didn’t feel right in the pit of his stomach, he wanted the feeling to go away and made him crave for the delicious sound of your laughter. “(Y/N)” he said in a teasing tone, causing you to look up immediately, your lips slightly parted in shock at the sudden loss of honorifics and him using your first name out of nowhere. You choked out a small “Y-yes?” cheeks tinting red at the teasing smirk now covering his face. “Don’t you know is rude to think of other men when you are in a date with a very handsome ex-volleyball player, who has his own house, a well-paid job and a lovely daughter that adores you?” you blinked at his sudden outburst and self-confidence, before laughing, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry!!” you lifted your hands over your head, feeling caught “Won’t do it again, I promise”. The look in your eyes was now soft, full of fondness, and he suddenly forgets how to breathe once more.

“MAMA!” you hear Seiji all the way from the back of the park. You get up from the swing and looked over to him who was waiving at you from a corner of the slide, trying to get your attention, saving Akaashi from you seeing how red the tips of his ears were right now.

“What is it?” you asked, now seeing a sleeping Kimi on your son’s back, desperately trying to carry her over to the two of you. Seeing this made Akaashi stand and jog over to the kids, taking his daughter in his arms. “I think the play date is over” he said. You pulled a light cardigan you had in your bag to cover her sleeping form, tucking it on her sides and turning her in a little cocoon of warmth; Akaashi could feel your fingers brush against his chest as you tucked her in and felt like an entire colony of ants lived inside his organs, he just hoped you couldn’t feel how fast his heart was beating. “Yeah, I think so” you smiled moving loose hairs falling over her face behind her little ear before letting her go and stepped away from Akaashi.

You didn’t want to leave, but you had to work two more shifts today and things were feeling a little too real too fast, you needed some space. “Common Seiji, gotta go home, mama has to work in a bit.” nodding, the toddler walks in front of Akaashi, bowing, “Thank you for the pizza, sir. And also, for letting me play with Kimi today, I had a lot of fun!” he was about to turn and leave when he remembers something else, “Also thank you for taking care of my mom, I saw how you held her hand when she was making a sad face, nobody does that for her, just me. So, thank you.” he gives Akaashi one of his lovely smiles, leaving him speechless again.

Bokuto would laugh at him if he knew the number of times, he’s been left speechless in a single day. “You are even more stupid than I thought you were, Miya Atusumu.” he mutters to himself as he sees you hand in hand with your son.

You give Akaashi a little wave and a smile, leaving the two behind and walking over to your small apartment, which somehow today felt bigger, brighter, maybe it was just your heart that felt lighter. You haven’t talked about Atsumu in years, but it wasn’t as bad as you thought it would be, you finally feel like you can move on from this, from him.

“Oh crap!” you dropped the bowl you were currently washing in your kitchen’s sink a few hours after getting back home, startling your son. “What’s wrong!!?” he asks worriedly, running over to your side from the living room, getting you back to reality, “I-I didn’t give my phone number to Kimi’s dad-” your son chuckled, shaking his head at how silly his mom can be. He’s sure today won’t be the last time he sees Kimi’s dad or so he wishes, he was spying constantly from afar making sure his mom was safe, and the look he saw on her face is one he’s never seen before. It made him feel warm inside.

This is a world in which Mob and Reigen’s paths have never crossed, in which 10-year-old Mob found psychic guidance in the form of the aging, retired tv personality Keiji Mogami, in which Reigen followed through on his plans to close the Spirits and Such Agency, in which a cruel twist of Mob’s powers forces him to confront how dangerous he really is.

10 year old Shigeo Kageyama has vanished, his trail instantly cold, and his case gathers dust in police archives as a kidnapping never solved. Four years pass before a chain of events causes his path to cross with that of the despondent, unfulfilled fake-psychic-turned-fake-investigator, Arataka Reigen. Reigen finds himself in over his head caring for an escaped victim of abuse who, for reasons unfathomable, has been taught to believe his very existence is a horrifically dangerous thing…

I'm sorry, I can't not include this one. It's like a whole different version of mp100 to me,,, just the way that the author explores and develops these characters, describes feelings, builds suspense and weaves everything together is incredible. If you haven't read it yet and are okay with dark and stressful topics, check it out!! Long and still ongoing u_u

• The Trolley Problem

In the aftermath of the Seasoning City Incident, tensions are high, and the future is uncertain.

As civil unrest grows and the question of what to do about Shigeo Kageyama is presented within the government, Mob simply tries to live life as normal.

However, things are rarely 'normal' for a kid with the power to rip the planet in two.

(Whether or not Shigeo presents a threat to the world at large remains unknown, but he's trying his best.)

A fic series that I haven't completely finished, but it's very, very good. My favorite depiction of Mob's handling of emotions post canon, hands down. I appreciate the way it's not so much that his issues are solved now, and more that he just has gained new ones to deal with. Feels very realistic that way. Love it <3

• a Nature so Foul

Mogami tries to prove a point.

He ends up awakening an eldritch terror.

God,,, god, this one... existential horror my beloved. The writing style and prose for this fic series is just, terrific. And the way it just handles this alternative to the mogami arc; the conflict between Mob and ???%... the emotions are described so well, it almost feels surreal in nature. A dark but amazing read ^^

• Signed Up For It

The spirit hauls itself out of the sink on knobby hands, clawing for purchase on smooth stainless steel. Black nails and stringy black hair, knotted like unspooled yarn and dripping with black viscera. It plops onto the tiled floor with the second worst sound Reigen’s heard today and gropes at Shigeo’s shoelaces.

“Oh, hello,” Shigeo says, looking down. “Do you need something?

Reigen learns what he signed up for and chooses to stay.

Wahhhh,,, this one is like blankets and hot choco on a snowy day. I love it so much,,, such a sweet exploration of Shige and Reigen's relationship, as well as Shigeo's relationship to spirits, and his relationships in general. Just a very lovely oneshot <3

• Temporary Accommodations

Due to a matter of circumstance and some near-death escapades, Mob's body gets kidnapped.

...Without Mob himself in it.

(In which the great Reigen Arataka's body becomes a sort of temporary accommodation for Mob's soul, and Reigen quickly finds out he's not really built for this sort of thing.)

A body sharing fic between Reigen and Mob. Angsty and a fun read,, I really like the way it presents Mob's powers and emotions especially, and it's great for those who like Reigen suffering, too :)

• Lens

Just when Shigeo thinks he can forget and move on, reality comes back to remind him.

The heart keeps score.

(Or, the one where Shigeo's injuries from Mogami's twisted world become scars on his physical body, and the people who love him don't let him walk alone.)

• Filling in the Blanks

Months after the incident with Keiji Mogami, Mob still refuses to talk about what happened inside the evil spirit's mindscape - and Reigen realizes that trying to get his soft-spoken student to talk may be an entirely improper approach.

Another post-mogami fic :) I really like how this one gradually unravels the truth to the spirits and such crew, felt cathartic,, A oneshot!

• Kegare

According to some people, Shigeo Kageyama is a walking time-bomb. And said people decide to do something about it.

In which Mob is kidnapped, detained, and isolated “for the greater good”. Of course, his friends and family have something to say about that. Now if only they could get to him before he starts to unravel.

A whole lotta hurt, followed by a whole lotta comfort.

This one is,,,, whoooof. Definitely skip if you are triggered by stuff like body horror and hallucinations and self harm and abuse. Also skip if you dislike depictions of mentally ill people committing violence, because even though I think it's understandable in this case, it still might not be something you want to read about. I like the way that it is structured however, switching between present and past pov, that way the misery doesn't become too overwhelming, and I appreciate that the healing seems to be going down a very gradual path so far. Still ongoing! And very angsty, but good 👍

• the perfect son

When Ritsu was nine years old, the monster in his closet took a very distinct shape.

It no longer looked like the demons described in folktales or the spirits his brother can see. It wasn’t a yokai or something Ritsu accidentally spotted while his parents watched a horror movie.

Ohghh,, this one's such a neat exploration of ageswap!Ritsu. I love it a lot. The depiction of his fear towards Shigeo and psychic powers in general is very good. A oneshot!

Really love the characterizaton in this one. Unfortunately not finished, but still a very worthwhile read <3

This one is very sweet. I love the way it portrays Mob and Teru's relationship, with their little stumbles and issues. Personally, I was particularly taken by Mob feeling insecure about boring people, the way it was presented here. It's such a little thing, but I so rarely see it in fics, even though it makes a lot of sense for him. Also a good read for fans of Reigen being a dad to Teru, lol. Finished ^^

Paripi Koumei/Ya Boy Kongming! drama finale extremely brief almost-4am thoughts.

I'M NOT EVEN MAD ABOUT THEM DOING THIS TO ME. IT HURT SO GOOD. I LOVED IT OH MY GODDDDDD.

It's the middle of the night and I should be sleeping, but I have no self control so when I saw this was available I needed to watch it immediately. Summer Sonia plan has its bumps but everything works out. Eiko and Maria sing together, everything is AWESOME for everyone who isn't Keiji and the show has 10 mins to go and yayyyy!

But then Kongming is drawn back to that meeting with Liu Bei they've been blue balling us with all series and he realises:

Cue Kongming and Owner having a heartfelt conversation in a way only two middle-aged men who converse exclusively through Three Kingdoms lore can.

Obviously the exact details are kind of skewed, but Kobayashi has previously suggested Kongming's dreams are calling to him so he can accept that Kongming has to go and lets him. Eiko is performing and doesn't realise any of this is going on. Later that night at the BB Lounge she thanks Kongming and he gives her his final pep talk.

But can't bring himself to say he thinks he's going back to being dead or whatever, so he holds back tears and Eiko just goes about like :D before singing upon Kongming's request without realising he sees this as the final performance of hers he'll ever witness. FLASHBACK TO ALL THE GOOD TIMES. SHOW WHY YOU DO THIS. HE BEGINS WALKING TOWARDS LIU BEI...

Cut to everyone else coming in for the evening's celebrations as Eiko is performing, Kongming lets everyone step in front of him until he disappears behind the crowd...

Outside the club Kobayashi (who has been escorting KABEtaijin) suddenly looks up at a shooting star in the sky and silently mouths "Kongming."

KABE and Kobayashi head inside, everyone is celebrating and it's super cute.

Kobayashi looks around for Kongming but can't see him so heads behind the bar. Then Eiko, oblivious Eiko WHO HAS HAD NO IDEA WHATSOEVER THAT ANY OF THIS WAS HAPPENING, can't see Kongming anywhere either! She calls out for him, asks Owner but he says he hasn't seen him... Kongming is just... gone...

She looks everywhere for Kongming, calling his name....

... and then she finds him in front of the mirror in the back room crying but IT'S OK BECAUSE HE'S.STILL.HERE.

He didn't die on the way back to his home planet like Poochie! He's stuck in Shibuya using Paypay like everyone else! MASSIVE MASSIVE FAKE OUT JUST TO TOY WITH EVERYONE'S FEELINGS IN THE FINAL 10 MINUTES OF THE SHOW OH MY GOD.

But I'm not mad because it got me good. I was like 😭 at every turn, then he just doesn't go and it's like y'know what? That's cool. I'M JUST GLAD HE'S HERE OK.

The problem with the idea of sending Kongming "back" is that, well, he died in the past. The first thing he does in the present is check his pulse and he's alive now, so given he's not a ghostly presence or anything there isn't any real "going back" to be had for Kongming imho. He's just some ojii-san in the city now and I couldn't ask for more. He did finally make peace with the presence of Liu Bei and his failures in the past, now he's purely living that Shibuya life and the drama is entirely open to a movie or sequel.

The ratings weren't great so I'm not sure that will happen, but I am just truly happy that we got these 10 episodes of television. The production values were high, the cast were excellent and the writing fleshed out the manga story beautifully. The whole concept is absolutely absurd and these last couple of episodes felt somwhat rushed, but the drama approaches everything so earnestly that it's hard not to get swept up in it all.

So now I have to go try and sleep without dwelling on all the sad Kongming faces I just had to endure.
