I think I’m a little bit in love with the different reasons for ethos mask in fanon.

Sometimes it’s insecurity; about his teeth, his face, the way the scar fissuring his eye snake’s beneath his cheek and makes a snarl of his lip. Sometimes it’s so no one can see the way his nose scrunches when he’s unhappy or the way his jaw twitches when he lies or how his tongue moves when forming words. Sometimes it’s just a shield. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t use them?

But the best part, in my opinion at least, is when the mask is removed. The quiet moment when the question is answered and the absence is filled.

Because isn’t that all of it? Teeth and disarmings. Flinches and undressings. Masks and their tender removal. The raw nerves left exposed beneath. Shaking hands held gently by the wrist; kindness pressing into the skin between the sleeve and the glove. Isn’t that all of it?
