I really like how nice the Kongofern is growing in this particular tank. I just wanted to add it temporarily, but I think I will remove the crypt and just keep the fern. It lookd very jungle like and is pretty. Like a green glass bottle.

Everything You Need to Know About Herbs: Patchouli
Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
*Medical Herb *Feminine
*Small note: It is considered poisonous but only because the oil shouldn't be ingested. Since most essential oil cannot be ingested into the body, I did not include it into a poisonous category. Puchu~
Tumblr media
Folk Names: Pucha-Pot, Kablin, Pacouli
Planet: Saturn, Mars, Venus
Element: Earth
Deities: Krishna, Athena, Set, Modron, Pan, Osain, Aphrodite
Abilities: Money, Fertility, Lust, and Carnal Desire
Characteristics: Is a hairy, aromatic perennial flowering plant that can grow to 3ft. It has square stems, oval leaves, and spikes bearing whorls of white to light purple flowers.
History: Native to Malaysia and the Philippines. It is now cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. It is famous as an Eastern perfume oil due to its very strong scent and being known for being an aphrodisiac. The powdered version was introduced into an incense later on, while the dried leaves were used in India as a prophylactic, a medicine used to prevent diseases like malaria. Malays put dried leaves into their clothing to protect them from insects and used the oil to treat smallpox.
Growing Patchouli:
Is it easy to grow? Yes
Rating: Beginner to Moderate (depending on location)
Seeds accessible? No
How to Grow
Video Guide
Where to Buy Seeds
Magical Usage:
A drop of the oil on money, handbags, and wallets can increase prosperity
Using the oil for aromatherapy can help ease the nervous tension and worry
Can be used in money and love spells (do not recommend for love spells since it can bring carnal desire instead of love)
Can be used in fertility talismans and a substituted for graveyard dust (supposedly)
Use to promote lust and attract people, especially for sex workers
Medical Usage:
Used to be used heavily in Asian medicine, featured in Chinese, Indian and Arabic traditions
Can repel insects
Can be used as an antidepressant and antiseptic
It can help with uneven skin tones and help clear skin conditions like skin eczema and acne
Can also help with varicose veins and hemorrhoids

some updates on my wet fish collection!
Tumblr media
so I was out of town for four weeks and aquarium maintenance was reduced to “feed and fertilize twice a week, top off water as needed” courtesy of a friend of mine. the lights and CO2 were already on a timer, and I lowered the light intensity before I left. I came back to a ton of plant growth, and also a lot of algae!
the interesting thing to me is what kinds of algae grew. there is a decent amount of purple-ish dust algae covering the rocks and the crypt, some green fuzzy algae on the moneywort that managed to grow up near the surface, a small amount of cyanobacteria that was easily removed by plucking a few leaves, and, as you can see from the fluorescent green mass in this photo, a TON of hair algae that grew in a huge, homogenous mass. but no green water algae, no staghorn algae, the glass was mostly clear, and no blackbeard algae.
overall, it was a surprisingly easy cleaning job! the hair algae mostly came out en masse, and there are still strands of it throughout the aquarium, but I expect that it will die down soon enough now that I’ve done a water change and dumped in some flourish excel.
most amusing is that my neon tetras are no longer morbidly obese. between that and the lack of staghorn algae (which I had previously struggled with), this was a wakeup call to me about overfeeding my fish. I’ve since moved her highness the betta fish to a desktop tank, so I’m hoping that I can adjust my feeding tactics to be able to feed both the neons and all the loaches without relying on overfeeding to ensure that food gets to the bottom of the tank.
here’s the post-maintenance look:
Tumblr media
I actually quite liked the jungle vibes before I cut all the plants back, but I think it made me realize that I actually really don’t enjoy the look of the rotala macranada (it’s the middle one of the taller plants remaining). the pink is inconsistent and ends up looking muddy, and it shoots out aerial roots like nothing else once it gets tall enough. I ripped out the ludwigia on the left side to replace it with ludwigia super red that I trimmed from my desktop tank, and I think I’m going to just rip out the rest of the rotala macranada later and fill the space in with more ludwigia super red and pogostemon erectus (which I ADORE).
once that’s done, I can let everything jungle out a bit more again. I enjoy the “so many plants you can’t see the back” look best!

Midnight Bacchanal- An Astarion-inspired Perfume Blend
this is a recipe for an essential oil blend which can be used for aromatherapy in an oil warmer (if you're rich I guess ;) or as a perfume.  The recipe is a RATIO, which means that it can be easily doubled or tripled depending on what you’re using it for.
...
Inspired by the current subject of my obsession, Astarion from Larian's soon-to-be released game Baldur's Gate 3, this is a luscious, intoxicating, fussy blend of rich incense and dark earth, overgrown jasmine and wilting roses, evoking decaying nobility and luxury.
Can be used in lotions, cologne bases or with a carrier oil, but would not recommend for use in cosmetics that are applied to the face or mouth.  As I have allergies stemming from many synthetic scents, I only use essential oils.  None of these are photoreactive, but as with all essential oils, pls patch test your skin with each if you've never used them before.

Astarion Essential Oil Blend Recipe
3 drops Vetiver essential oil  (vetiveria zizanioides)
4 drops Myrrh essential oil   (commiphora myrrha)
3 drops Frankincense essential oil  (boswellia serrata)
2 drops Patchouli essential oil  (pogostemon cablin)
1 drop Vanilla botanical extract  (vanilla planifolia)
2 drops Damask Rose absolute (rosa damascena)
3 drops Jasmine absolute (jasminum grandiflorium)
Notes:
Wet:  a burst of intoxicating florals with resinous and woody notes. seriously made me a little dizzy in a good way.
Dry: all of the complex earthy scents come through, softening the florals and their sweetness, and bringing notes of incense and dirt (but also in a good way)
these notes are from ME, and do not mean you will experience the perfume in the same way!
Warnings&Comments:
Please be aware if you’ve never used essential oils- they should be diluted with a carrier oil before being applied to skin.  Good quality grapeseed oil isn’t a bad choice, and it’s cheap!  I use sweet almond usually.
Not a food safe blend.
Rose absolute (and all oils to a greater and lesser degree) can smell completely different on your skin from person to person. So if it smells overwhelmingly of rose to you, you might need to lower the concentration.
Store your finished product in a container that is tinted, as exposure to sunlight will make the scent fade faster.
I use Vanilla botanical extract, but vanilla oleoresin is also fine, though it will tint your finished perfume brownish.  Otherwise this should come out as a nice amber color.
My jasmine (jasminum grandiflorium) is from India, not Egypt, but Egyptian would be fine as well, mine just smelled a bit soapy and using two florals like I did, I was afraid the soapiness would make it smell like a candle.  Yes, it’s super expensive, but you can buy sample vials from some reputable essential oil distributors, and it should be plenty.  You can also sub with synthetic if you like.  I just can’t ;P
If this is too much flower for you, reduce rose and jasmine oils each by 1 drop

Scents
Verses relevant: BG3/DnD, Elder Scrolls, Wow, Dragon Age
As lore states, a lich is essentially an animate thinking corpse. Though his body regenerates itself, it's a continuous cycle of fast healing necrosis. He smells like literal death (if you know that smell, it's quite pungent. If you don't, consider yourself lucky.)
No amount of bathing eliminates the smell, but he covers it with his own blend of pogostemon oil (patchouli), cedarwood oil, and camphor residues. It's quite potent, but it covers the scent well enough for anyone/race that doesn't have heightened senses.
If he doesn't have the usual oil in stock, his second preference is one blended with lemon oil and other citrus notes.

*It took five tries to sucessfully grow Pogostemon helferi. Maybe In-Vitro is the better choice for Aquarium plants. Or maybe I am just stupid.

Beltane Blessings Anointing Oil
"Celebrate the Celtic May Day festival with this blend.
5 drops lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) for love, health, peace
5 drops patchouli essential oil (Pogostemon cablin) for energy, sex, aphrodisiac, grounding
5 drops tangerine essential oil (Citrus reticulata) for physical energy, joy, purification
1/4 cup carrier oil
Blend all essential oils in a glass or nonreactive bowl. Add carrier oil, and mix well. Store in a glass bottle.
Use to bless and purify anyone entering sacred space who is not allergic to any of the ingredients. Use with care, and print a copy of the ingredients to have on had in case of allergy. Tangerine essential oil is reported to be non-phototoxic but can still present sensitivity issues in some. Use with care."
-Blackthorn's Botanical Magic by Amy Blackthorn
NOTE: Essential oils and absolutes can be expensive, and this book has shown to present a few costly recipes, so take them with a grain of salt. I personally use oil infusions rather than essential oils because of chemical sensitivity, and it tends not to be of high cost comparatively. I take all of these recipes as a suggestion of correspondence rather than something I absolutely must follow. It's better to get creative and use what you have on hand rather than spend a ton of money on some oils you'll only use once or twice.

I was checking out some other aquatic plants (if you missed it - "Yes, that plant is a witch" over on my big blog touches on the topic) and saw a genus that was familiar...
Pogostemon - the genus that Patchouli is a part of.
Having been well acquainted with how most aquatic plants end up smelling like patchouli anyway, I do wonder if I could be growing a bounty of not-quite-but-sort-of in the same container as the Mysterious Ingredient.
Also it's quite pretty.
