Derrel Isler - Living the Dream
Tumblr media
A career in sales is not for everyone. Those that are successful exhibit a number of similar traits that make them effective in their chosen profession: work ethic, people skills, knowledge of product, an ability to read the room and put people at ease, to name a few. If that’s the case, Wheeling native and Longwood, Fla., resident Derrel Isler was, to borrow a cliche, born for this position. In fairness, Isler was born for a number of different career options. He’s a rare combination of a person whose high level of intelligence is matched by both his work ethic and ease with dealing with all types of people. Affectionately referred to as "Big D" by friends and colleagues alike, Isler grew up on Bow Street in Wheeling along with his parents and brother. He finished in the Top 15 of his class at Wheeling Park High, was a Summa Cum Laude Honors College graduate in electrical engineering from WVU, and the owner of an MBA from Charleston Southern University. He’s also a U.S. Navy Veteran.
The Move Around
He’s lived in South Carolina, Virginia, North Carolina and now Florida since leaving the Ohio Valley, working his way up the ladder wherever he went. But when Big D took a position with Dell in 2007, then his stock, and financial portfolio, really started to expand, as did his family. He married, had three loving children, and did his best to find that work-life balance between Sales Engineer and father and husband. Isler battled through the hardships of divorce, but he and his ex-wife found common ground in co-parenting their three children, and both are stronger for it. When he’s not in Dad mode, Big D enjoys the fruits of his labor. He’s a man who enjoys the finer things in life, but doesn’t flaunt it and hasn’t allowed his success to go to his head. He’s still the same smiling, easy-going guy he’s always been. Such a personality warrants a large friend list, and Isler keeps in touch with them all. He has an active presence on social media, whether it's Facebook, Twitter, or the (Insta)Gram. He engages his friends in thought-provoking questions, humorous queries, and it’s not uncommon to see him posting a photo, feet propped up on a lounger near his home’s in-ground pool, cigar in hand, just enjoying the day. He’s the perfect example of a home-grown success story that’s never forgotten his roots and doesn’t hesitate to return home to catch up with family and friends.
Tumblr media
Those who grew up with Isler would agree he's the same guy today that he was when graduated from Wheeling Park High School back in the late 1990s.
After graduating from WVU with honors to enlisting in the U.S. Navy, was that part of the plan, or did you consider going into the service first and then college?
I finished my second year at WVU, and I never thought of going into the service. But I kept receiving emails from recruiters promising all these great things if I joined. I knew I had options after college, so why did I need to consider the military? Finally, I saw a flyer in the dining hall that made me say, ‘Okay, let me see what the catch is.’ The catch was I HAD to finish one of my majors in two years (I wanted electrical and computer engineering, which would have taken me another three years). If I passed all of the interviews, the fitness test, and the background check, I would be made active duty immediately. I did all that and became an E-7, or Chief, in the Navy at 20 with zero experience. I was originally supposed to be a submariner, but during my senior year I asked to switch to become an instructor at the Nuclear Power School in Charleston, S.C. After I was graduated from college, I received my commission and went off to Officer Indoctrination School in Rhode Island; I then moved to Charleston. Joining the Navy is one of the best decisions I ever made because I learned so much from that experience.
You've experienced success at every level and in multiple sectors, and overcome life throwing you a few curve balls. Where did that sense of drive and work ethic come from, and do you credit that and anything else for helping you push through the tough times?
Where did I learn to hustle hard? My father. He still is a hard working-man to this day. Seeing him work so hard and grind for our family is where I get my work ethic from.
You were always willing to put in the work to climb the ladder. How did that attitude or focus change or shift any, upon the birth of your daughters and finally your son?
I strive for balance and to ensure my family is taken care of. When I don’t have my kids, I make up for it by traveling to visit customers, staying in the office a few extra hours, and I'm always willing to jump on extra tasks that need done. What drives me is my desire to give my kids a better life than I had. I had a great childhood and my parents busted their tails to provide for me and my brother. I want to do the same for my kids.
Divorce is never easy, but you're balancing a successful career and still spending a good bit of time with your children. How difficult is it to make that work, and what allows you to do so?
Well, I say it first starts with the woman I co-parent with, my baby momma. In all seriousness, I could not have the focus I need to at work if she didn’t consistently hold it down when she has the kids. When I have the kids (40-60 arrangement), I go into Dad mode. I do not have any family around, so I am on point for school drop-off, pick-up, homework, after school activities, you name it. It is a lot to juggle at times, but I have coworkers and an employer that values work-life balance. But how did I/do I get through hard times? Many bottles of scotch, good music, and amazing friends! I had the luck and pleasure of meeting a friend in Orlando that is also from the Ohio Valley. We immediately connected by reminiscing about DiCarlo's Pizza, Coleman’s Fish Market, and all of the things that make “home” amazing. She’s been a big part of helping me cope with some of my harder times down here. I owe a lot to her.
Tumblr media
When he does have free time, Isler enjoys hitting the town with good friends and enjoying the fruits of his labor. He works hard and plays hard.
Finally, your job could provide even greater financial reward if you were able to significantly increase your travel availability, spend more time on the road. Do you ever regret having to dial it back, or have you struck the perfect balance? Also, how cooperative was the company in allowing you to do so, given your success rate?
As far as climbing the ladder goes, I had the desire to get into management. That was pre-divorce. After the divorce, I put that on hold in order to focus on raising my kids and maintaining my sanity. I still don’t think that management is for me, but I can see myself taking on more global responsibility in my current role. Once I am an empty-nester, my passport is going to get a lot of use! I love what I do, so I really didn’t “sacrifice” much there. I am lucky enough to wake up every day eager to go to work and help my customers. Read the full article

THE BACARDI FIVE-HUNDRED by TWP Outline CH 1: Tuesday Night; Chilling w/ the girls & some strange news. A frantic & fulfilling Race Home. CH 2: Thursday Night; Race to score liquor & drugs before pre-game ritual: Bonfire w/ friends. CH 3: Awkward Arrival of a Shorthaired White Girl; Painful dining experience @ Steak n’ Shake in the early AM. Then Home for final preparations. Yakira’s neediness preyed upon… Pack my bags & sleep on the couch… CH 4: Friday Morning Race to Bank & Store after waking up late; Get cleaned up & load the car. Smoke a bowl, have a shot, then hit the road, onto FL-417 North. CH 5: Party On the Road; Maps out, music blasting, blunts, & Bacardi from the canteen. Zach & I each eat one Adderall and two mushroom caps. Good times. Finally enter Daytona. Arrive early @ La Quinta Inn & now we wait. 21st Century Fox is fashionably late & every one wonders what James is doing here… CH 6: Check In & the Nightmare of Parking; Off on foot for quiet, awkward lunch. Weird scenes on the Boardwalk: Doomsday Preachers, hobo street performers, witches. @ Ocean Deck Bar & Grill, some bad vibes, & an acoustic revival. Then back to Hotel. CH 7: Git’ Down; Rolling blunts & mixing drinks, rushing off to ICE machine. Out on balcony, Race to catch the buzz before dusk. Down to pool & hot tub. Swirling whirlpool foursome in Jacuzzi. “Dead Cats, Dead Rats!” Josh takes Meghan to bed. Jackson, James, & Yakira help make sure she’s okay. Me & Zach stay downstairs. What now? Cocaine… CH 8: Neon & Noise; the remaining five of us roam on foot down Main St and Boardwalk theme park district. Go Karts. We race around, but not for very long. Me & Jackson eat some shrooms. Tilt-a-Whirl, then Sling-Shot, & finally photo booth. Singing drinking songs walking back. Waiting @ Domino’s for James’ food, me & her finally get to talk. Having a good time, glad you’re here. Back @ Hotel, more blunts on balcony before Ocelot wants food, TV & sleep. Jackson abides (?!?!?!) & now all beds are occupied. Still wired, what comes next..? CH 9: Night Alive; A messy exit, across street & down block to Yakira’s Corolla. Knew Jackson would snoop thru my bags, so I snuck out drugs & her present. @ Waffle House for another painful dining experience, and some horrible music. Paranoia, angst & hijacking the juke-box. Bad vibes. Madly laughing, “sympathy for the rooster…” Escape. CH 10: Race back to Hotel; Collect liquor & towels. Down to beach. Tequila, & The Black Angels on the dark shore. We split up… Naked run into ocean, cold swim. See something and return, witch going thru my belongings. She says hi. I say hi. In the distance, hear familiar voices & see lights of security carts. The witch was gone. Nervously dressed. Zach & Yakira return. Race back to Hotel… CH 11: Drunk Nostalgia on the Balcony; Three of us reflect on how much we’ve grown up & changed. Talk about the drugs we’ve done, the ones we haven’t & the ones we want to try. Eventually discuss sleeping arrangements & call it a night. Alone on the balcony, I reflect heavily on my journey w/ Jackson & what the future might hold. Heavy thoughts on a heavy night. Hear a party next door or downstairs but don’t care. Lay down w/ pillow & blanket, listening to laughter & sea birds… CH 12: Dreamlike Witch Encounter; Strange girl from beach woke me & invited me to party next door. Inside, there were 100 Corona bottles & a pound of ditch weed. Three other dudes, & the Witch. Balcony, shrooms, coke, weed, beer. Then we find ourselves talking about fulfilling our dreams, & the witch starts asking how willing/ determined we are… She started making strange promises in return for drugs & booze. I never gave her anything. Before dawn, I went over the rails & returned to my own balcony & slept. CH 13: Jackson’s Laughter Woke Me; Stood & saw her in hot tub, pale luscious & GD sexy… I saw James tho & calmed down. “Good morning, Crazy!” She laughed. Changed, grabbed stogies, and joined them. Got to sit alone w/ her half naked in day light hot tub. Shortly followed by Meghan & josh, only 2 minutes alone. I see the dudes from last night staring @ us from their balcony. They wave. I ignore. We all go upstairs to pack. Jackson tells me to clean up balcony, & trash talks. We stare each other down & watch each other’s hearts break. Alone, the dudes ask me what’s up w/ Jackson, & can they get w/ her. Dude, No. She’s my ex, & that’s her baby daddy. Leave her alone. Move cars, load up. Missing gift & key- card scene, was it the witch? EJ tells me don’t worry. Drive confusedly back to boardwalk theme park area. Get turnt & go out… CH 14: Johnny Rock n Roll’s Gift Shop on Main St; lots of amazing sights, beach stuff, Woodstock & Grateful Dead memorabilia. Biker chic, stoner chic, Veteran, Hippie, beatnik chic… Onto Boot Hill Cemetery, & a bad time taking photos, Jackson & James always bickering. Browse thru more gift shops, & I realize James is only here to buy Jackson anything she wants… CH 15: Boardwalk Gauntlet; Sling-shot, liquor, blunt roaches, & tilt a whirl. Philosophies of adrenaline junkies. Split up for taffies, Frisbees, kites & beer. Regroup on beach for full contact free throw Frisbee. Down to the ocean for a quick swim, & a tender moment w/ my woman. After her kite won’t fly, Meghan hears about the go kart track near by, & wants to check it out. CH 16: The Bacardi 500; We bribed some workers @ the track to let us all Race together. It would be three rounds, of five laps each. It was a brutal, unforgiving trial to weed out the worst drivers, & we were all drunk and stoned. Nearly an hour of high speed curving & passing, shit talking screaming, shouting, singing. Hearing anthems like L.A. Woman & Going the Distance in my head… There was no clear winner & the techs had no idea, so it was highly debated, but in the end, I didn’t care. CH 17: Last Look @ the Deep Blue Sea; Another round of drinks, Frisbee, & swimming before the rain clouds form. I finally tell her happy birthday. We head back to the cars… It was time to go. Jackson & her band had more places to stop & things to do before returning to Lake County. The three of us had to get back to Orlando while we still could… We said our good byes & hit the road. We followed her at first, until FL-400, then onto I-4, and finally, FL-417… CH 18: The Stormy Road Home; Still drinking & smoking, Yakira plays some music & suddenly they are venting, talking mad shit about Jackson, her attitude, the way she made everything a downer. I stood up for her but they chewed me out. Heavy music to cope w/ heavy thoughts. Silent breakdown. Finally Zach changes music & everything is better temporarily. We Race Home @ great time, less that an hour. But bad vibes soon return. Arguing & fighting upon return. CH 19: Angry Night Home; I brood & dwell on negative thoughts while Zach & Yakira waste all the hot water. Found the lost q in the backyard & salvaged it. Zach maintained his shitty mood & had to leave for work. Yakira & I went to the gas station & got more beer & cigarettes. Got turnt & made dinner @ the house. Ma came home, & Yakira talked her ear off. Eventually her & I crashed in the living room watching TV & I fell asleep. After two AM Zach came home. They woke me up giggling in the shower & I didn’t go easily back to sleep. CH 20: Sunday, February 19th, Jackson’s 21st Birthday; More ugly bickering w/ Zach. Both of us dope sick, he talks major shit & I break a glass pipe. He threatens to slug me. I punch myself & get a bloody black eye. He leaves w/ Jason to score more weed. Yakira asks if I’m okay, then leaves. Jackson never comes & alone @ the house I reflect heavily on the trip & her scornful words on the balcony. I decide to clean up. Then chill & drink w/ Jorge from work. CH 21: Strange Days; Jackson finally comes on Monday. I take her to get ice cream, then gift her card & an eighth. We talk. Neither of us seem very happy… Don’t hear from her for several days. Back @ the Hardware Store the owners are losing their grip w/ sanity, but I get closer w/ Jordan & Rachael & Shannon. Continue chilling w/ Jorge, Yakira & Yesse P. The next times I hear from Jackson is to buy weed & rush home. Sometimes she brings James, or somebody else… After I angrily speak my mind about it, she stops responding to my calls, texts, or snaps… Temporarily concluded that she hates me & it’s time for me to really move on & let her go. Have the epiphany that happiness comes not from others, but from within myself. EPILOGUE: The Uncertain Future; About a week later, Yakira wanted me & Zach to join her at the fair. We agreed. She came to the house & we chilled. Then she revealed Jackson was coming too. We went in two separate cars & the two of us talked everything out & felt much better. Ate some shrooms @ the carnival & staggered thru the fun house & rode all the attractions. Yakira & Zach got sick after all intense whiplash from the rides. They sat it out while me & Jackson shared a close moment on an incredibly dangerous ride. After everything was over, we had to part ways & go home. She had school & her child. I had work & hustling bags. But as we parted, we did knowing we’d always have each other there, as long as I stayed careful not to fuck it up…

The Second Wave Portfolio (DGX, RXMD, APT)
The second wave is already here, or it’s coming. The bridge to a vaccine will have to be lengthened a bit. If you live in the US, it’s hard to distinguish a second wave from the first wave because they are basically flowing together at this point – which won’t be the case for basically any other developed-world country in the northern hemisphere. Saddled with a stunning degree of mismanagement, US investors can’t quite yet focus on new recovery stocks. Instead, it’s the same old basket of hi-tech solutions to life indoors and apart mixed with virus “coping” plays. Today, we look at a few stocks that fall into the latter category, including: Quest Diagnostics Inc (NYSE:DGX), Progressive Care Inc (OTCMKTS:RXMD), and Alpha Pro Tech, Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:APT). Quest Diagnostics Inc (NYSE:DGX) provides diagnostic testing information and services in the United States and internationally. The company's Diagnostic Information Services business segment develops and delivers diagnostic testing information and services, such as routine testing, non-routine and advanced clinical testing, gene-based and esoteric testing, anatomic pathology, and other diagnostic information services.  Its Diagnostic Solutions segment offers risk assessment services for the life insurance industry; and health information technology solutions for healthcare organizations and clinicians. Quest Diagnostics Incorporated was founded in 1967 and is headquartered in Secaucus, New Jersey. Quest Diagnostics Inc (NYSE:DGX) just announced that it has received emergency use authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to use specimen pooling with its proprietary molecular diagnostic test for COVID-19. Quest is the first lab provider to receive FDA authorization for the technique for COVID-19 testing in the United States.   Even with that news, the action hasn't really heated up in the stock, with shares moving net sideways over the past week. Shares of the stock have powered higher over the past month, rallying roughly 11% in that time on strong overall action.  Quest Diagnostics Inc (NYSE:DGX) managed to rope in revenues totaling $1.8B in overall sales during the company's most recently reported quarterly financial data -- a figure that represents a rate of top line growth of -6.5%, as compared to year-ago data in comparable terms. In addition, the company is battling some balance sheet hurdles, with cash levels struggling to keep up with current liabilities ($988M against $1.8B, respectively). Progressive Care Inc (OTCMKTS:RXMD) is an interesting stock to put on this list. It’s on the OTC but actively pursuing a Nasdaq uplist. It has strong and growing sales. It has been performing well, with shares advancing more than 50% in the past few weeks. The company represents itself as “a personalized healthcare services and technology company”. The company that has been strong on the top and bottom lines in the regional pharmacy services space. That said, perhaps the more interesting story here on the margin is its expansion in the COVID antibody testing space, recently moving from two for four counties in the virus battleground of south Florida. Progressive Care Inc (OTCMKTS:RXMD) has been one of the most aggressive forces for increased antibody testing services in the Florida market, recently announcing an expanded antibody testing regional footprint to include Palm Beach County. The Company’s antibody testing service has been met with extremely strong demand at its Dade and Broward County locations, depleting testing kit inventories by over 90% through sales and on-site test administrations. However, in a recent move, the company expanded its service into Orange county with its expanded PharmCo service in Orlando. “This move will create access to a wider base of customers, patients, and providers, and will provide much-needed room to grow for years to come,” remarked S. Parikh Mars, CEO of Progressive Care. “Both the small size and limited location surroundings of our Five Star location have been constraining our ability to grow in the dynamic Orlando market. In addition, the shift in brand designation to our widely recognized PharmCo brand will drive expanded market share potential and allow us to tap the huge potential we see in this market.” It will be interesting to see if the stock can break out of its recent sideways action. Over the past week, the stock is net flat, and looking for something new to spark things. However, shares have been in a very strong uptrend overall during the past month, up as much as 75% in that time. Progressive Care Inc (OTCMKTS:RXMD) pulled in sales of $9.1M in its last reported quarterly financials, representing top line growth of 75.4%. The company has put up impressive numbers, with consolidated monthly gross sales across all locations during May totaling $3 million, representing year-over-year growth of 67%. It was 54% the month before, and 105% in March. And it was even better before the pandemic hit. In addition, the company is battling some balance sheet hurdles, with cash levels struggling to keep up with current liabilities ($705K against $7.5M, respectively).  Alpha Pro Tech, Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:APT) engages in developing, manufacturing, and marketing a line of disposable protective apparel, building supply products, and infection control products in the United States and internationally. The big idea powering the stock lately is its products of masks capable of helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The company operates through three segments: Building Supply, Disposable Protective Apparel, and Infection Control. The company provides its products under the Alpha Pro Tech brand name, as well as under private labels. Its products are used primarily in cleanrooms; industrial safety manufacturing environments; health care facilities, such as hospitals, laboratories, and dental offices; pharmaceutical markets; and building and re-roofing sites.  Alpha Pro Tech, Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:APT) distributes its products through a network of purchasing groups, distributors, and independent sales representatives, as well as through its sales and marketing force.  APT also just joined the Russell 2000, which is a huge leap and implies some indexing flows from fund managers who have to own a piece of stocks in the index. It will be interesting to see if the stock can break out of its recent sideways action. Over the past week, the stock is net flat, and looking for something new to spark things. Alpha Pro Tech, Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:APT) generated sales of $18.2M, according to information released in the company's most recent quarterly financial report. That adds up to a sequential quarter-over-quarter growth rate of 66.2% on the top line. In addition, the company has a strong balance sheet, with cash levels far exceeding current liabilities ($17.6M against $10.5M). Read the full article

The middle period of life can be full of many transitions and changes. In a recent chat with Kristen Edens, she mentioned how challenging balancing caregiving and finances has been. For this installment of the Sitting Poolside Interview Series, I invited Kristen to share her story.
On her site, Kristen talks about how she found her “why” in life. She helps her readers discover who they are and what their purpose is for their lives.
Mr. SR (MSR): Kristen, please tell us about your experience and what inspired you to start kristeneden.com/ManagingMidlife?
Reinvention starts with a business
Kristen Edens (KE): My business and blog was a process that began in the mid-2000s. I was employed as an exercise physiologist and making 62 cents above minimum wage. I loved the job but wasn’t making the difference I wanted to make for people. At that time, I didn’t know what “that difference” was going to be, but I knew something was missing.
Caregiving introduces itself
As I was figuring this out, my attempts at fixing a failing marriage had run dry and I divorced in late 2009. Through this heartbreaking experience, I moved across the country to start over, creating Kris the Scribbler, a copywriting service. At the same time, I became a long-distance caregiver for my father who lived 500 miles away. Once a month, I travelled to help my mother as she coped with my father’s injuries and his care. As a new freelancer, I felt the events leading up to this were a good sign to build a business and help my parents.
Caregiving X 1.5
Two years later, my daughter moved in with her newborn child. In addition to entrepreneurship, I am still a long-distance caregiver and caring for my granddaughter. I was deep into the Sandwich Generation lifestyle – a term given to individuals who care for parents and their children. I’m still pleased to have freelancing to support me.
Slow Growth
During 2010 to 2015, Kris the Scribbler made very slow progress. I worked long hours balancing work, life, and caregiving. I acquired many one-time jobs, and the occasional retainer client. Many tell me I need to blog since I am such a great writer. The problem: I wasn’t motivated. It made no sense that I could enjoy the process for my clients yet couldn’t motivate myself. In mid-2012, I made a vow to write 2 blogs per month with topics on networking, writing for business, entrepreneurship, creating the ideal newsletter, and grammar issues. Still, enthusiasm and desire were absent.
Hints of Change
A change came following an editorial assignment for one of my clients. With my media pass in hand, I attended FinCon 2012 (held in St. Louis). I was intrigued with the money and media themes and felt I had found a group I could relate to—the pursuit of financial independence. The only trouble: no time to get involved. I promise myself to eventually get involved with FinCon.
Between caregiving, entrepreneurship, and some self-care, my days were full. Part of my debt-free success was due to living a frugal, minimalist lifestyle. Another part was living with and sharing expenses with my daughter, cousin, and her roommate. We all worked together to ensure bills were paid fairly. However, personalities sometimes clashed and we shared a few difficult conversations.
Caregiving 2.5
The caregiving bug strikes again when in late 2014, my partner suffers a workplace injury and is disabled. By now, I’m frazzled, frustrated, and wildly concerned about finances. To help myself cope, I start writing about my experience as a 50 year old entrepreneur, caregiving, and the quest for financial freedom.
Something Amazing Happens
That’s when my blogging got noticed! Readers reached out to me to find out how I managed it all and kept my sanity. They wanted to know more. They wanted to learn from me. Many asked when my next blog was coming out and what it was going to be about. Not only that, many shared their personal stories with me, quickly filling an editorial calendar with plenty of blogging themes. My interest took off and I received a double benefit: 1) sharing my experiences and frustrations, and 2) helping others.
I found a way to make a difference!
MSR: How did the events up to now lead to Managing Midlife?
KE: Inspired by the response, I repurposed my business and website to KristenEdens.com with the blog, Managing Midlife, within the site. I had considered separating the two as separate entities, but combined them as one integrated site due to time constraints and technical skills. I researched many blogs and businesses, and saw a fairly even split for both options. Creating one site was my best option.
Following my father’s death in 2015, my mother suffered depression and loneliness, so I continued to visit her monthly. My daughter and granddaughter had moved to their own apartment, yet still relied on me for ongoing help (can’t blame the daughter for not wanting to live with her mother!)
By 2018, business as Kristen Edens LLC is attracting more clients yet still not providing the windfall of income and financial independence that everyone claims. It is TOUGH to balance business and caregiving! Yet I still had plenty to blog about.
That year, I decided to treat myself to attend FinCon2018 in Orlando, Florida. It was a financial pinch to attend, but I had given up so much the past 6 years that I considered this a much-needed retreat for myself. The biggest takeaway following the event was the personal goal to win the Plutus Award for Best Baby Boomer blog and to become a speaker for 2019.
Caregiving 2.5 plus Determination
My goal kept me moving forward. I acquired one retainer client and occasional content writing and consulting clients. After 4 years of long-distance caregiving for my mother, she finally moved closer December 2018. Unfortunately, her health took a steady decline and I spent much of my time continuing care for her. My business, blog, and caregiving topped 80 hours per week. Even with this grueling schedule, I was nominated and eventually became a finalist for the 2019 Plutus Awards for Best Baby Boomer blog! I was also accepted as a FinCon speaker for a discussion based on my blog, FIReD: Financial Independence ReDefined After 50.
This was a very exciting time for me, although bittersweet. While my mother’s health continued to decline, I still chose to attend FinCon 2019. I got the word my mother died just two hours before the Plutus Awards ceremony.
MSR: After going through that journey, what have you learned?
KE: I can summarize the lessons learned into 4 areas:
1. Sacrifices are a necessity
Amazingly, from my father’s death until my mother’s death, I consistently created weekly blogs. However, I could no longer keep up with my e-newsletter, and my client load was limited. It was very difficult to manage all the things I had to do PLUS be a business owner. Clients, and therefore, income, took a hit. Be prepared to make sacrifices and determine where these will fall.
2. Avoid the compare and despair mindset
Although I worked my tail off to build a business, I wasn’t making the “6-figure” income many freelancers brag about. I fell into the despair and despise mindset: despair by compare, and despise the 6-figure claims. I had several cuss and cry sessions, but realized this was wasted time. Everyone’s story is different and it’s better to share your experiences with the goal to help others, rather than brood about it.
3. “Me time” is critical
Speaking of time, “me time” is critical. I made sure I ate well, slept as long as I needed, and maintained my exercise. My preferred me time was solitude. Favorite hobbies lost time too, but this experience helped me to identify what I valued most. Determine what your me time is and add it to your day.
4. Prepare yourself and your family for emergencies
Emergencies come in all shapes, sizes, and unexpected times. Gather all paperwork and passwords into a central location where a key person has access. Create a backup system of contact people, including friends, family, financial, medical, and all bills or debt. Have a trusted loved one listed as TOD (transfer on death), POA (power of attorney), and all financial accounts. Update yearly—without fail! Accept the hard truth that you will eventually die! Hiding from this won’t help anyone. Tell your loved ones your wishes should something happen to you. How do you want your body, finances, personal belongings, and anything else important to you managed before, during, and after this event?
MSR: How would you advise readers to prepare (financially and emotionally) for that caregiving period of life?
KE: First and foremost, take care of yourself! Perhaps it’s the exercise physiologist in me speaking, but your health is the greatest gift to yourself, those you love, and those who love you. Find your support team. Mine were aunts and uncles whom I would often call to vent, cuss, and cry. Best of all: they listened, loved, and offered anything they could to help. Most often I just needed someone to listen.
For the financial side of preparation, understand that frugal and minimalist are not negative lifestyle habits. After helping my mother downsize 3 times, I realized how much stuff sits idle in our homes. Things we craved at one point eventually gets forgotten and shoved out of sight. Take a hard look at your belongings and separate the stuff from the vitals. It’s tough! Emotions get in the way. In an emergency, however, when you start looking at stuff to sell or get rid of, emotions can exacerbate the situation. Explore frugal and minimalist habits to adopt and simplify life.
MSR: What is your vision for the Managing Midlife site?
KE: Since my FinCon presentation, FIReD is gaining momentum. I am reconnecting with readers and followers to hear their thoughts and stories about family, finance, caregiving, and second acts. I’m enjoying the many interviews and feedback, plus generating lots of articles and information to share with this audience.
I may eventually separate Managing Midlife from KristenEdens.com, but will put most focus into creating helpful articles. With caregiving duties lessened, I have more time to research, interview, and write for Managing Midlife. My next goal is to again be a speaker at FinCon and win the Plutus Award. I will also resurrect my newsletter.
Additionally, I will continue to seek freelance clients. If an opportunity comes my way, I am willing to work full-time (preferably remote) for a local company as this will help slow down the demands on me.
Without a doubt, Managing Midlife will continue as the voice for the 50+ audience. There is so much I can do to help and this is my way to make a difference!
MSR: Thank you for sharing your family’s story, Kristen. I know that caregiving can be one of the most challenging periods of life. Your insights are really practical and encouraging.
Congratulations on being a Plutus Award finalist! I look forward to seeing how your site and community continue to grow.
