If you're still taking asks, anything about your werewolf au, it sounds amazing.
+ any other wip/story you want to talk about.
Have a great day/evening!
AAAAHHHHHH I will gladly talk some more about my werewolf au!!!
So this AU does actually take place within the SW universe! The clones are still the clones, and Obi-Wan still has a relationship with the Force, albeit....a slightly different one. Cody and her siblings overthrow Kamino well before the war starts, and instead of being a Jedi, Obi-Wan is able to shift into a wolf.
(Shout-out to @lttrsfrmlnrrgby, whose Stewjon world building definitely inspired shape-shifting as a subset of Force-use here.)
Cody moves to a run-down old farm on Stewjon after the Vode take their freedom with the intent of building a simple life for herself there, and spends the first several weeks fixing up the place, just trying to make it livable--repairing the leaking roof, rebuilding cairns to keep the sheep appropriately contained, maybe realizing that she might be in over her head but of course refusing to admit that to any of her siblings, who already thought she was crazy for doing this in the first place.
And then she finds a,,,,dog, thing, hiding in the hen house, that's clearly injured but for some reason hasn't made a meal out of any of the chickens, and somewhat against her better judgment (especially given that she isn't familiar enough with the local fauna to be certain if this is a feral stray or an actual wild animal) she pretty begrudgingly decides to help the poor thing. Rex definitely thinks she's lost the plot, now, and he doesn't even know that she's let the creature inside her house.
And Obi-Wan really doesn’t mean to let this go on for so long, but she can't shift back until she's healed up and Cody is just so nice, even if she's a little gruff and keeps insisting that Obi-Wan can't stay, and her hands are so strong and gentle.....
I'm still taking asks, if anyone's interested in playing 🥰🥰

Day 21 - Pure / Patron
The sigil of Menphina, the lover, was carved into one of the cairns next to the grave. How cruel, Rael thought. It was the patron deity Miounne had randomly picked for them because Rael had refused to take interest in the matter and chose one for themselves when the elezen had asked about it for her paperworks. Rael hadn’t had a patron deity before or any believe in the Twelve and they had found it useless to start with either of these things now. But what irony had it been that the elezen chose Menphina of all options… Haurchefant on the other hand… if he hadn’t been ishgardian and therefore bound to Halone, Menphina would have been the perfect choice for him. He had been so full of kindness and love and instead of granting him the happy ever after he deserved it had led him here. To rest eternally in the cold pure snow beside the goddess‘s symbol, on a cliff overlooking the city that had been his home, that he had loved and died for.
Well, not quite… Rael thought, as they knelt down to place a white lily next to his tombstone. He had in fact gone to the Vault because he wanted to save a friend and of course also to fight for Ishgard. But died he had to protect A’viloh. The poor Miqo’te hadn’t found the courage to accompany Rael here. Instead he had locked himself up in a room at the inn and barely spoken to anyone at all these last few days. He had deemed himself unworthy to stay at Fortemps manor any day longer. His presence a cruel reminder of their loss. A loss that weighed heavy on him too and tore open old barely healed wounds. His fault. His failure. His weakness. His curse.
All of the confidence he had built up and the thought that he had changed at all since that day had been burned from his mind with a beam of blinding light. A searing blade of light that would have killed him instead if Haurchefant hadn’t protected him. It was to be expected that A‘vi would blame himself for Haurchefant‘s death but he had never been more wrong. It was Rael who secretly thought themselves responsible. They should have seen it coming. No! Actually they had seen it coming! The shield. The crack! They just hadn’t payed attention. Thought they had just imagined it. But it had been a warning. Oh, all of this would have been preventable, if they only had better control of their powers…
But they hadn’t and now a dear friend lay dead, here beneath the pure white snow, never to smile, never to laugh, never to love again.

Dragon enthusiast you say? 👀👀
Do you have any headcanons for the dragons in The Elder Scrolls universe? 👀👀
Ooh, good question!
In my playthroughs,I've always liked to think that just like with followers, the Dragonborn includes the dragons you can befriend/ally with in Skyrim (Paarthurnax, Odahviing, and Durnehviir) as found family, and they feel the same (eventually). After all, the Dragonborn has the soul of a dragon.
I believe that most dragons in Skyrim (Paarthurnax and Durnehviir excluded) are slow to trust the Dragonborn (with good reason),but the ones willing to listen and take a calmer approach than just breathing fire first, find that they're not so different.
I like to use the Dragon protected cities mod for my playthroughs,so more dragons eventually come around to the Dragonborn's side.
(My LDB is pretty rational in most situations, so if they're willing to talk, so is she. You use the voice or breathe fire, she's going to defend herself and her companions. Simple as that.)
Paarthurnax looks at the Dragonborn as sort of an adopted grandchild, and the Dragonborn thinks of him as an adoptive grandfather figure in return. (I.e goes to him for advice and such, and they enjoy visiting with each other for hours).
With Odahviing, his vow of servitude becomes a genuine friendship over time, so when the Dragonborn calls for his aid, when he comes flying to the rescue,it ceases to be out of duty, but for the bond they have formed. He's helping his friend out of a dire situation.
I also like to think that Vulthuryol (Dragon in Blackreach) is just mad you woke him from his nap. Afterall, he doesn't attack or even come out until you shout at the Dwarven Sun which echoes throughout all of Blackreach. Poor thing was minding his own business. 😄
This isn't really a head canon, but my Dragonborn likes to summon Durnehviir whenever she can, just so he can see the sky and feel the sun. Get him out of the house (Soul Cairn).
As for the other dragons throughout TES, I don't really have any head canons for them, but now this will cross my mind the next time I play, so thank you for giving me something to think about.
These are just my personal head canons, and not really a generalization I expect people to accept for themselves in their playthroughs.😉
Thank you for the ask! 🐉

Y’all wanna know some things that bother me SJM Books edition that lead to UNHINGED theories?!? : Obvious Spoilers for all of Sarah J Maas books …
*also, I told you these are unhinged thoughts, don’t come for me.. argue with your mama… just enjoy the ride.
- Why do we know the Bluebloods Matron name and not Blackbeak or Yellowlegs?
- And why does she share a name with the princess of Adriana in ACOTAR?
🧐
- Why is ACOTAR the only series in first person? What is Prythian hiding?
- And why is it only Feyres story? Nestas story is 3rd person but several different POV.
- What exactly were we not supposed to notice about the people or places Feyre saw or experienced that could easily be hidden in her 1st person POV?
🫣
- Why are feline descriptors used for everyone and everything , constantly?
😬
- The parallels between the library in the house of wind and the Torre Cesme
- Wombs
- Cats
- Darkness that stares back
- Haven for women
😉
- “I was never as good as I thought I was…” - Florence, but applied to Aelin- we gloss over the fact that she seriously considers conquering other worlds like wtf. What if Aelin, and hear me out, (I say this as I’m also on my knees for her bc she is my queen), is somehow responsible for the Asteri?
🤯
- 1. Briggs said, tugging on his shackles, “the only people I see on a daily basis are the ones who take me apart like a cadaver, and then stitch me up again before nightfall, their medwitches smoothing everything away.” 2. No injuries ever remained when she awoke. No pain. Only the memory of it, of Cairn’s smiling face as he carved her up over and over. 3. SJM:”what goes on on the dungeons might be too much, poor hunt Ruhn and baxian”… IM JUST SAYING.
🥲
- Ruhn shares a name with the mountain ranges in Erilea. Is he named after them?
- Perhaps his a nod to his mothers home.
- The ruhnn mountains are where the Stygian spiders made their home after they split with their sisters on the southern continent
- Handmaidens of Maeve who has VIOLET STARRY EYES,
- like Rhysand…
- Rhysand who looks like Ruhn….
- THE PIECES ARE THERE BUT HOW DO THEY FIT?
🙃
- When Feyre has visions/dreams of Amarantha in ACOTAR Rhys sees them…. When he recounts his story in ch 54(ACOMAF), why does he imply he didn’t know who she was dreaming about? He would know Amarantha wouldn’t he? In her dreams it was woman with red nails … we never get that little detail about Amaranthas looks. Why? Was it her? Or someone else?
👩🏻‍🦯
- Cresseida, briar, Cormac… these are not common names so why the hell does she use them in more than one series?
🙃
Of course I can’t forget the classics….
- WHAT DID LORCAN DO?!? 👹
- And where the fuck is Vaughn? 👹

rookclan: in pursuit of knowledge
Tumblr media
current leadership
lyrestar | 143 moons | shameless | beloved kitsitter
an eccentric old fellow, lyrestar is old as dirt and usually covered in the stuff to boot. his eyesight is failing and he's missing a few teeth, but by starclan he's not retiring yet! he was a bit of a casanova back in the day, siring litters with multiple she-cats before finally settling down with his current mate, a former kittypet named mae. he loves kits and can often be found playing with his great-grandkits in the nursery. not as technologically-minded, he prefers digging for grubs and gathering clay for pottery; his polydactyly makes his paws great shovels. his tail was burned in an accident when he was a young warrior, and since then the firekeepers have banned him from handling fire.
cherryhawk | 70 moons | responsible | great hunter & fast as the wind
cherryhawk is a very capable deputy, and at this point she's the leader of rookclan in all but name. her birth was a difficult one, leaving her without a tail and with a permanently weak leg, which she usually keeps wrapped in leaves to compress it. she earned the suffix -hawk in honor of her speed, which helped her catch and kill an actual hawk during her assessment. she likes to keep physically fit and often races her otterclan rival along the border. her level-headed nature makes her the ideal cat to curb her clanmates' reckless enthusiasm.
swanplume | 124 moons | troublesome | prophecy interpreter finchbeak | 124 moons | righteous | good healer yewberry | 29 moons | thoughtful | keen eye & dark forest affinity
swanplume and finchbeak are rookclan's elder healers; they're littermates and, surprisingly, lyrestar's younger aunts. much like their nephew, they refuse to retire. they're meddlesome old she-cats and love to gossip and nag. both of them bear scars on their faces thanks to their job requiring close proximity to their clanmates' sometimes-explosive invention accidents. most of rookclan prefer swanplume to finchbeak, whose abrasive tongue makes for poor bedside manner.
yewberry is their much younger apprentice. his demeanor is much calmer and quieter than his denmates', though his tendency to stare at things no one else can see makes him somewhat intimidating. while all of rookclan let their curiosity guide them, yewberry's interest parallels his name: he cultivates toxic plants and experiments with them. he attempted to ingest small doses to try and make himself immune to his poisons, but his first attempt went wrong and cherryhawk forbade him from doing it again. so naturally he's continued doing it, just in secret, and much more carefully.
culture
inquisitive and innovative, rookclan cats are relentless in their pursuit of knowledge. thanks to their experiments and inventions, they're the most technologically-advanced of the clans, developing rudimentary tools, crude wheels, and even a simple written language of glyphs. what's more, rookclan cats have even managed to harness the power of fire. only specific cats are permitted to start fires, however; these cats, called firekeepers, undergo extensive training in order to control the flames. with this fire, rookclan is able to cook their prey, a practice the other clans find odd. dried minnows and smoked jerky are favorite rookclan snacks, often squirreled away in caches marked by stone cairns. another rookclan recipe involves mashing grubs and meat scraps, using bird eggs to bind them, forming them into small cakes, and frying them in fat.
because of their keen interest in learning, rookclan routinely hosts outsiders, engaging in fascinated conversation and exchanging knowledge. thanks to this, rookclan cats believe in a greater variety of gods, spirits, and superstitions; when you're playing with explosive compounds and hazardous materials, you'll take the help of anyone you can get.
rookclan actually has two camps, one on a grassy knoll overlooking a cliff that falls into a gorge, and another on the steep face of the cliff, accessed through a system of natural caves and cat-made tunnels. the primary camp on the surface is where the young and old live, as well as warriors assigned to routine patrols. the secondary camp on the cliff face is occupied by those performing dangerous experiments, using fire or sharp tools, or working with hazardous materials. this area wasn't always a camp, but became one to prevent inventors from falling asleep at their workbenches. the gorge below, meanwhile, is a dumping ground for human garbage, which rookclan cats love to collect and tinker with, if only to discover how these objects work.

On January 31st 1918 the ‘Battle of the Isle of May’ happened.
I dislike the titlw"Battle" in this piece of war time history, to me it belittles the fact that it was one big fuck up, and the fact it cost the lives of 105 servicemen also makes me feel uncomfortable as it was by no stretch of the imagination a battle.
During a war that was not short of calamities this one ranks up there with the worst, it was one calamity after another, at 18:30 a secret navy exercise known as EC1 involving the 13th Submarine Division (known a K-boats) and a number of Destroyers, Battleships and Light Cruisers had sailed from Rosyth.
The boats and submarines had sailed with only dim stern lights and in radio silence due to the sighting of a German submarine in the Forth earlier that day. They were not helped by misty conditions whilst travelling under the cover of darkness. An unlucky mishap with the helm of submarine K-14 had resulted in a collision with K-22. However worse was to follow…
The huge battlecruiser HMS Australia narrowly missed the stricken K-boats and disaster had been averted. But not for long. Communication eventually reached the lead Light Cruiser HMS Ithuriel about the original collision and the captain of the ship decided to turn around and head back to the two K-boats which had struck each other. Alongside the Light cruiser, the other K-boats also followed her back but communication was poor and unfortunately the boats and submarines further back, lead by HMS Fearless were unaware of the accident ahead and ran straight into their sister flotilla.
Over the following minutes, disaster struck again as HMS Fearless rammed K-17, and the submarine sank with the loss of all life in a matter of minutes. Submarines K-6 hit K-4, and nearly cut her in half, K-7 fast approaching spotting K-6, she just managed to avoid her, but was totally unaware of K-4 lying across her path, and a further collision ensued. The second hit proved fatal for K-4, and she sank. Only nine men were pulled from the water, and one of these died before he could receive medical treatment.
Total deaths were 105, 2 subs were sunk 4 more damaged and the Scout cruiser HMS Fearless damaged.
Despite it being remembered (black humour) as the ‘Battle of the Isle of May’, there were actually no enemy warships involved and only a combination of bad luck and human error resulted in such a great loss of life. The terrible events of that night took place just 1.5 miles off the north end of the Isle of May.
Of course the accident was kept secret during the war, and a memorial cairn was finally erected 84 years later, on 31st January 2002 at Anstruther harbour opposite the Isle of May.

Letters From Watson Liveblog - Aug. 6
Black Peter, Part 3 of 3
Tumblr media
I'm glad Holmes and I agree on the younger Neligan being too weak to harpoon a man, although one of my initial thoughts was that the murderer stabbed Peter Carey with a knife or something, and then proceeded to harpoon him after he was dead, which would give him the time to drive that thing in there instead of all at once.
Tumblr media
If I had murdered, sorry, "killed" someone I probably wouldn't want to admit to it in front of a police detective, especially as an attempt to correct him. Regardless, I'm kind of disappointed the culprit didn't turn out to be the older Neligan. I think it would have been more dramatic and made for more of a twist, especially with the younger Neligan as a red herring.
Tumblr media
Alright, so Black Peter did pick up Neligan senior, and did leave him behind in a way. Again, I think there's a lot of potential for this to have turned out as a revenge story. The fact old Neligan was willing to leave his wife and child behind could mean he also wouldn't mind his son taking the blame for the crime.
Tumblr media
I would rule this as self-defense. And with Peter Carey's reputation it's probably not an uncommon experience for him to pull his knife out on somebody after drinking. And as a harpooner of many years, of course Cairns would instinctively go for his weapon of choice.
Tumblr media
Poor young Neligan, wrong place, wrong time, and worse luck when he dropped his notebook. At least this means Hopkins wasn't really that far off since Neligan was basically there when the killing happened. Now that I think about it, if he had gotten there to get back the securities, and Black Peter was still kickin', Neligan would probably be the murder victim.
Tumblr media
I'm probably missing something, but why are Holmes and Watson going to Norway? If what Cairns said is true, then the older Neligan never even made it there... Or did he?
No, he's likely dead. Hearing about Norway probably just made Holmes decide to go there with Watson for a vacation or something.

Play-By-Blog #8: The Isle by Luke Gearing
Welcome to my ongoing play-by-blog of The Isle by Luke Gearing! We are playing this adventure with its original system, The Vanilla Game (adjusted somewhat to fit the format). You can check out the Play-By-Blog Repository to get all caught up if you wish.
How Play-By-Blog works:
I write up the situation, NPCs, and more, just like a DM.
You vote in the poll to help decide the character's course of action.
I roll the dice, resolve actions, and write them up next week.
So on and so forth for the rest of the adventure!
Notation:
[Text in brackets is out-of-character/GM text!] "Non-italicized quotes denote text from the original adventure!" "Italicized quotations denotes NPC dialogue."
Our character: Medon Girou - Magic Cutpurse
Our map: The Isle
[You can use the link's above to find Medon's Character Sheet and map of the Isle. On the map, you are currently at 1.]
Now, back to the adventure!
Tumblr media
Like you thought earlier, you aren't above grave robbing and while most of these former monks probably don't have much to speak of in terms of buried treasure, it's worth giving one a look.
You search around for a well-shaped rock and spend the next hour or so digging in the area of the freshest of the graves. Your stomach is growling. The piece of cheese in your pocket is calling to you, but you know it's too small to make much of a difference either way. You'll need to get a fire going and roast up the dead monk's fish tonight. Thinking about your future dinner helps motivate you through the rest of the dig.
You brush the last bits of dirt away corpse (do you call it that if it's just a skeleton?) and try to make sense of the remains. The person was small, a woman you'd guess but you aren't well versed enough to know for sure. Bits of cracked, rotting leather and whispy clothes still hang to the body. You can see the hempen straps of a backpack or satchel as well. It looks like she was dumped in here with belongings and all.
To the side, there's a knife - not one you'd travel with or use for hunting, more like one you'd use to cut your meal at supper. Flecks of dried blood on the rusting blade.
You roll the bones over to one side of the hole and the backpack's top pouch falls open. Inside, you discover a surprising number of items: "A poor short sword, 20 arrows, 50' of silk rope, a grappling hook, 50 hacksilver in mixed coinage, a set of ruby earrings (worth ~500 hs), and a charm of yew wood." The charm is in immaculate condition, as if it was made and cleaned just days ago.
Odd, you think, to find someone buried with so much on them, especially in a monastery - even moreso if this was a woman. The monastery, you know, is all men without a nunnery to speak of, now or ever. The rope and grappling hook stick out in your mind as well, equipment you would have brought if you'd prepared better for your incursion to the isle.
Who was this woman?
In time, you pack your items into the worn, dirty backpack alongside those from the grave and toss the charm into your pocket, alongside the lead figurines. You use the rock to place the dirt back over the top of the grave, being sure not to disturb the nearby cairn. It doesn't look as it once did, but a passerby would need to approach closely before they'd notice the disturbed soil. It will have to do.
You turn back to the rest of the isle, the sea roaring gently at your back.
[The character sheet is updated now to reflect all of the newly acquired items. In order to spend gold (in this case, hacksilver) to gain XP, we'll need to return to the mainland or find a way to live openly and comfortably within the monastery. Cioran will not be back for 29 days.]
[We've got a few bits of loot, some additional equipment and even a few intriguing special items now. I'm excited to see where Medon goes from here. Thanks for reading! - Christian]

Chapter 2 is live!
The Dance of the Dragons is over and Rhaenyra Targaryen is dead, but Aegon II Targaryen's throne is far from secure. With enemies approaching and rumors swirling of a plot to replace him with Rhaenyra's son, a badly injured Aegon II Targaryen must somehow unite a deeply divided realm and convince his lords that he is still capable of being king. To do this, he makes a plan to marry Baela Targaryen, daughter of his most hated enemy. From chapter 2:
The Dragonpit stood there, silent, butchered and eviscerated; a cairn raised for House Targaryen. Poor Dreamfyre who had never seen a battle had been put down like a rabid dog. Shrykos and Morghul had never taken to the skies with their riders; Aegon wanted to weep. Sunfyre’s passing had left a gaping wound in his heart. He imagined the confusion of little Jae, who had only known the world warmed by her hatchling’s presence. And Shrykos too, the last piece of Rys’ soul he had left, gone forever… Daenys’ dream had come true at last. Aenar had escaped the Fourteen Flames, but his seeds had wrought a Doom of their own.
Thanks all for the support thus far! Tags under the cut, let myself or @aifsaath know if you'd like to be added to the list.

guys can a yap abt moon cairn?
ok thx cuz i hate her :)
ok so like i hate her sm XD like bro u can’t dip from your old life and leave ur friends js cuz u get married and also like speaking of… ur husband sucks sweetie i’m sorry 💀 bro jit married a rock idec that they were controlled by ghost before cuz like they’re actual personality as themselves after is just terrible 😢. She’s rude asf and annoying plus (and i’m i’m bias but that’s not the point) but like poor phos, even if after ghost was removed cairn doesn’t see phos as a friend anymore which like she dosent have to but it pisses me off that they don’t even recognize nor care that a relationship between the two of them did exist at one point. like even if u glow up and ditch all ur old friends it’s stupid to ignore that past u even happened. cairn has so many character flaws and I respect that those exist and her character developed the way it did for story sake but it still pisses me tf off that they’re just so ignorant and annoying :(
no ones has to agree nor even read this but yk i js wanted to yap a lil so if you did read my spat of negativity then ty :))

shout out to my first dog daycare job, who for some braindead reason worked together with this wildly incompetent dog rescue to foster some of their dogs; one of which was extremely aggressive toward men and had prey drive so high she wanted to kill small dogs, and others with extreme dog aggression and bite histories. One ended up biting a coworker during a dog fight so bad he needed surgery on his hand and was unable to use it for months. the dog attacked two customer dogs. He also bit a photographer doing his adoption shoot lmao. and yet he was still allowed to board with the kennel.
(i must also mention that NONE of these high energy dogs were being exercised daily. they were in kennels pretty muchall day except for quick potty breaks. Several had reactivity issues and were making the environment ridiculously stressful for the dogs that were there for daycare/boarding )
my first terrible experience with these foster dogs was when the two rescue owners came to the lobby (i was front desk girl) and wanted me to fetch both of the dogs to walk them together. It was a newbie mistake move but neither of them thought to inform me that they had DA issues. I walked both of them together on leash, and before I got to the lobby they started attacking each other. I didn't know what to do because i was not at all trained in dog fights so i held their leashes as far apart from each other as possible (im smallish so my armspan was short enough for them to reach each other's faces) and to this day its the only dog fight ive witnessed that drew a fairly significant amount of blood. (dogs were somehow ok with just lacerations but it was bloody!) (it got broken up when I managed to grab my walkie and yell for help)
the events that led to me being fired were also related to one of the foster dogs. This dog was over 100 lbs (not overweight), had a history of aggression toward men, dog aggression, and extreme prey drive. we had to use our walkie to warn other employees when she was being walked down the hall.
one morning, I was the only person to arrive to do opening duties and feeding; as my coworker had an emergency at home (break in) and we had about 60 dogs to feed and let out to potty. it was my first ever opening shift and neither of my supervisors came to the daycare early to help me.
i did okay by myself but i was taking a long ass time because no one could help me for hours. eventually my coworker showed up to help.
Relevant to this story is that we would "walk" dogs by letting them loose in a fenced area, there were multiple fenced in areas so there was about 4-5 yards each dog could use. They were left outside to potty *without supervision* because we would be having to move so many dogs and do so many feedings etc.
anyway
the events leading up to this Mistake are a bit unclear, since we were both walking and in the confusion it was hard to remember who did what (exactly why i hated when coworkers would split up duties without communicating with me properly) and somehow we both forgot that the small dogs were still out in the yard before moving on to the bigger dogs.
my coworker ended up bringing the massive, high prey drive dog into the yard with this poor little cairn terrier, realized what she did once she saw the little dog, but this massive dog was so strong that it pulled her across the yard and managed to bite the little dog. miraculously this dog only suffered one (deep as hell) puncture wound, and was able to be treated at a pet hospital.
we were both called in to the office and fired that day (actually dont know if other girl was fired) despite the clear cascade of events leading up to the incident. they just wanted to cover their asses to make nice with the client who's dog they almost got killed. it was a bad mistake! but all management systems fail, and human error is very real. and no one should be punished for shit like that when it's clearly a fault with the system in place. im still salty about it btw.
oh yeah! i was also only paid 10 dollars an hour for this job!
moral of the story is I'm never trusting any dog kennel ever with any of my dogs lmao

Artists, websites, interesting places & things ! ...
My memory is poor. As for the purposes of updating, I will add new postings to the top of the list. Albeit not alphabetized in this manner, it is easier to maintain. I started the list so I would have all of the artists I love, places I've been, websites I like, all at a glance whenever I work on projects. Then I decided to share it. I mean, why not! At present it's mainly names without context. Which is a little unfair to artists. However, as I get more settled in my new home,I will provide more links, etc.(With Artists Permission Naturally.) Thank You For Being Here ..... ~S
Peter Coulson - Photographer
Alina Bobyleva - model. (With the exception of a few fashion photographers I greatly respect, (*One of whom I will link above this note), I don't normally like to put too much emphasis on the modelling industry per se. However, with as much focus on blond or raven haired, tanned models. This young lady is a fair skinned redhead. When I was growing up as a fair skinned dark shade redhead, you never saw yourself represented in the fashion world.

ep 2 rewatch thoughts
franklin & crozier’s conversation about nature vs its architect is sooo telling. crozier’s view is ultimately more in line with the show’s existentialism, that there is no architect to nature, it merely is - but i don’t think it’s completely correct, because crozier is pretty firmly convinced that the arctic is actively malevolent and “wants them dead”, when really what i think the show is getting at is more along the lines of pure existentialism in the sense that the arctic doesn’t really care at all. regardless though franklin’s insistence on an architect is really telling because that architect is one that favours him specifically, as the agent of the british empire, and has prepared the arctic for him to claim.
gore: “i pray it’s english tea merchants from canton who look upon this next” about the message in the cairn kind of underscores the whole problem with the franklin expedition in the first place. it’s not gonna be english tea merchants you dumb slut!
for all his bravado hickey looks legit scared when irving first leaves but it’s hard to tell if he’s scared of irving or of gibson freaking out
he was correct about irving though and his overall justification is really interesting - hickey views the world as chaos vs order, with himself in the side of chaos triumphing against the order of the british empire. he is superior because he thrives in that chaos and can work with it. but similar to how nature has no architect, the arctic is neither chaos not order, it simply is. it’s easy to read this as hickey correctly identifying the problems within the colonialist mindset, and he does of course work as a destabilising element throwing the expedition into chaos (mutiny). but even had hickey not weaved his dastardly plans the expedition would have failed anyway. and, of course, life can prevail in the north, but only in concert with nature. hickey’s attitude is just the other side of the coin of an imperialist mindset, in which order must be asserted over chaotic nature for the good of the empire - hickey will act against that order for his own gain. neither attitude is correct though, obviously, because you cannot tame or conquer the arctic.
obviously loaded conversation between franklin and fitzjames about how a man gets his position and what he should do when he has it. again we can see the tension between appearances and actions re crozier vs franklin; franklin claims to want friendship but can never actually deliver on it and ultimately rejects crozier’s apology next episode.
also “i’ll not let francis’s melancholy touch you. i’ll not have it, do you hear me?” genuinely there is something legitimately quite sad about franklin & fitzjames’ relationship because fj is actively quite attentive towards franklin’s emotional state in a way that’s not reciprocated. it’s another side to how crozier and franklin are foils to each other — crozier and fitzjames’ relationship is outwardly extremely poor, reaching violent levels when crozier’s alcoholism reaches its peak, but ultimately ends up as one characterised by extreme emotional intimacy and care. and this can only happen once the strictures of victorian customs break down; jopson is promoted to lieutenant, crozier & fj pull the sledges alongside their crew, contrasting sir john/james ross (can’t remember which one), and fj can even unburden himself to crozier in a manner that would be impossible were they not beyond the reaches of victorian standards of masculinity. whereas while franklin and fitzjames’ relationship is outwardly extremely positive that is really just artifice and vanity, and it lacks the actual emotional depth fj will later develop with crozier. arguably it’s also self-serving on both ends - fj benefits from proximity to franklin’s privilege, and franklin benefits from proximity to a younger, more popular officer (esp if, though the show doesn’t mention whether it’s using this, you include the fact that fitzjames was considered as leader of the expedition before franklin but was ruled out for being too young).
also i keep characterising franklin’s affection for his men as being motivated mostly by vanity and i think i’m overrreacting cause i despise him but actually it’s much more reasonable to say that he feels genuine affection for them but that it’s completely poisoned by his emphasis on imperial hierarchy. imperial masculinity at its finest - the complete conflation of the father with the captain/general.
tiny line but “i thought mohawks had carried you off” (franklin), “no, much worse” (jane) about crozier and sophia is soo juicy. i’m torn on how much to emphasise crozier’s irishness in analysis because i am highly biased here, and i don’t want to do a classic “woah he’s irish” and undermine his complicity in the british empire. but there is obviously the fact that crozier is from a colony, and this has capped his career in the navy completely - it’s a deciding factor in why he’s even on the expedition at all. and that he eventually joins the netsilik at the end of the show. to me i do think this line is showing that to franklin, the line between any ethnic/national groups external to england is much thinner than the line even between english and irish, no matter how much that irish man may have bought into the empire.
also that conversation shows how for all that franklin claims to want to extend the arm of friendship to crozier, what he wants is less to actually be friends with crozier and more for crozier to politely slip back into the hierarchy franklin is comfortable with. it’s also why he’s so much more comfortable with fitzjames, who by virtue of being so insecure in his own position, is very willing and indeed desperate to fit into that hierarchy.
“it must not before in its life have smelled anything like an englishman” (heather about tunbaaq). yeah cause you’ve all got fucking lead poisoning. also the real irony of this line is that yeah heather is correct but not for the reasons he thinks — not because englishman is an ontologically separate (and superior) category of being but because their inability to understand or respect cultures that have fostered a way of life in the arctic, and their desire to own king william land for owning’s sake, immediately marks them out.
also their insistence on calling silna, who is actively in her thirties, a girl, is so telling. i don’t think there’s a single moment in the show where anyone calls her a woman.
irving walking in on crozier & hickey drinking will never not be funny. would pay money to know what went on his head at that moment. the actual conversation between hickey & crozier is interesting but i don’t actually know how much people were into reclaiming the word mick so hard to tell whether this is an immediate tell that hickey’s lying. i do think that’s what the scene is going for though
dr stanley continues to be just the worst. this whole scene is so interesting, for reasons that are pretty obvious. it’s interesting that franklin straight up leaves though - he allows goodsir to try and save silna’s father but there’s just no room in his worldview for anything outside his own culture to the extent that he cannot even tolerate their presence on his ship. later on obviously also dismisses goodsir’s interest in why silna’s dad’s tongue was cut out by brushing off any concern in “these people” purely because he just cannot fathom that there could be anything of worth there. contrast goodsir’s assertion earlier in the episode that king william land is beautiful. though obviously we have to discuss the fact that goodsir is the one who kills silna’s dad in the end — he has the desire to help but his instruments cannot manage it. ironically this also kind of dooms them all fully because it’s what unleashed tunbaaq.
