Waking from an uneasy rest a good while earlier than they usually would, Ace and Sabo rolled out of bed one after the other in a still-silent house, no muffled sound of Luffy's snores or clattering in the kitchen to be heard.
Ace looked to be doing better, but didn't say anything, choosing to use the few hand signals they'd all been working out together; Luffy didn't know sign and there hadn't been any books on the subject to come through the traders yet and heavens know that Goa is too good to admit that they have people with disabilities living amongst them, so they were using their own portions of language until he could get one for all three of them to use. If it made Ace teary-eyed that they were willing to learn something entirely new for when he went nonverbal, then that was for him to know and no one else to find out.
'Go out,' Ace motioned when he got Sabo's attention, an eyebrow shooting upwards to show it was a question.
The blond thought for a moment before nodding. "Yeah, might as well. Jus' don't forget your shoes." He said, purposely looking down at Ace's bare feet and getting a borderline-dramatic sigh in return, but he went to grab them anyway.
It didn't take long at all for them to leave the house to start the day by looking for Luffy; they didn't think anything could've happened to him, but it didn't stop the worry wiggling into the backs of their minds.
They decided that stopping by Dadan's would be a good choice since she was Makino's friend, though they never did figure out how it happened, and maybe Luffy had crashed there. They couldn't help but notice the mountain was still and silent, with not even the Kings lumbering about through the trees or the birds singing their morning songs. It was like when they walked into their empty house but worse.
When they got to the bandits' hut they were surprised to find Dadan already sitting out with her axe, which certainly didn't help their fears, but she just looked unnerved when she noticed them. "Hey, brats, did Garp come for a visit 'r somethin'?" She asked, voice rough and tired, as if she'd only gotten a few hours of sleep. At Ace's slow head shake, her expression soured even further. "That's jus' great."
It didn't seem like she was going to say anything past that, or at least not to them, so Sabo gently tugged Ace's sleeve to get moving again. He didn't like how she reacted and he didn't like how she jumped straight to Garp visiting. Ace looked to be feeling the same when he caught his gaze, but they just elected to keep moving.
Going to the top of the mountain was always a chore, but one they typically enjoyed; right then, though, they didn't have near enough sleep in them to properly enjoy it. Especially not with how dead the forest was.
When a thunderous crash broke the silence about half an hour into their trek, both boys jumped, despite it sounding to be a good distance away. They glanced at each other and nodded, lips flattening into straight lines as they took off in the direction it came from, hearing several more before they cut off. They could only hope they were going in the right direction after it went silent, but they were confident enough that they were continuing on a straight enough path that they'd find wherever it was coming from.
It felt as if they'd chased over half the island by the time they came across broken trees, and they slowed their pace and readied their pipes as they approached further. The destruction got worse the closer they got, with splintered trees and boulders having been reduced to rubble on either side of them, until finally they saw the edge of a clearing approach.
Slowly looking around one of the standing trees, both of them brought in sharp breaths as they saw just how much had been destroyed, and just what looked to have destroyed it.
Softly, anxiously, Sabo couldn't stop the words from falling from his lips.
"What... happened?"
-×-×-×-
The voice didn't fit the fishman standing in front of him, bandages covering his chest and seeming to glitch and reveal the true speaker. Luffy shut his eyes and rubbed them roughly with the heels of his hands, willing the image away, willing whatever this was to stop haunting him. To stop telling him of a life he hadn't lived.
Uncovering his eyes and letting the pressure spots clear out, he looked back to see Sabo and Ace standing at the edge of the clearing, both looking more shocked than anything. He couldn't stop himself from cringing at them finding him like this - he was supposed to be the cool uncle, not the batshit feral uncle. He wasn't supposed to take after his father.
Sitting up and groaning as he did so, he could already feel the aches building up in his muscles and joints from overdoing it after underdoing it for so long. "Uh... Oops?" He said oh-so-gracefully as his boys finally started rushing over, neither seeming to know how to react.
They just stared between each other for a few moments, until -
"Ace punched Shanks in the balls and he flipped us off for it." Sabo blurted out, and while it wasn't anything close to what he was expecting, he could only let his expression melt into one of fond exasperation. Of course, leave the boys unsupervised and they'd go and try to take out their other uncle.
Ace glared at Sabo and shoved his shoulder roughly, but just huffed and crossed his arms with an almost smug look. "At least you had an excitin' evening?" Luffy asked, trying to ignore the discomfort at being found in the state he was in.
Sabo gave an only somewhat hesitant nod while Ace just shrugged. It was probably the wrong question to ask, considering that the momentary relief was gone and they seemed fully aware of where they were again. "So..." Sabo spoke up after an awkward length of silence and gestured to the broken nature around them. "Did you..?"
Letting his expression fall, Luffy gave a halfhearted shrug. "I mean, I got a li'l upset an' this is where Garp would always take his frustrations out, so I kinda beelined it here." He kept his eyes trained on his beaten up hands, not wanting to see his boys' expressions. "It wasn't even somethin' I shoulda got upset about, neither, so. Over-re-acted." He pronounced the word slowly and in portions, and while some have laughed at him for being a grown adult and still having trouble with longer words, the boys never did.
He didn't receive a verbal response, and he was afraid that they were - he didn't know. Scared? Nervous?
And then a very familiar pipe whacked him over the head.
It wasn't at full strength, but it certainly would have hurt a normal human, and his eyes shot up to see a huffy Ace with his pipe in his hands and his foot tapping while Sabo looked more awestruck than anything. 'Go home, now, sleep,' Ace motioned with one hand, adding in a middle finger for good measure and Luffy gave him a lopsided smile.
Sabo looked between Ace and Luffy, fidgeting with his hands, and Luffy turned his attention to him, nodding in silent permission to voice whatever he was thinking. "Can - can you teach us how to break boulders?" He asked in a voice as close to shy as his ever would.
Luffy wanted to say no, but the hope in his eyes and the threats brewing in Ace's forced his hand. "I don't see why not, but you two're gonna have to get a bit older before I'm comfy workin' with you that rough." He conceded, slowly pushing himself to his feet and brushing his pants off. He had to give a puff of laughter when he noticed that he was the only one of the three without shoes, though.
"Alright, let's go home and get you two some real rest."

so go out (make your amends)
Fandom: One Piece Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Monkey D. Luffy & Portgas D. Ace, Monkey D. Garp & Monkey D. Luffy, Monkey D. Luffy & Portgas D. Rouge Summary:
Portgas D. Luffy - formerly Monkey D. Luffy - is the adoptive little brother of Portgas D. Rouge, younger brother of Monkey D. Dragon, and the secondborn son of Monkey D. Garp. He suffers from chronic recklessness and deja vu, getting flashes of memories that aren't his - or maybe they are?
Either way, he won't let his nephew face the same fate as the freckled boy in blurred nightmares.
title from nobody's fool - shakey graves
With reddened eyes and a runny nose, Portgas D. Luffy - officially Monkey D. Luffy, but the connection he felt with that name had frayed and snapped when his father refused to let him be his own person - stared up at one Monkey D. Garp with the most precious bundle he'd ever held carefully in his arms. Shaking his head, he nearly snarled at the man he once looked up to.
"You're not taking him from me." His voice was rough and shaky, much like the rest of him. "You take him, you take me too."
Luffy never liked how Garp always thought he could get things through punches and shouts; he never cared much when he was little, just getting angry over headaches and attempts to force him down an unhappy path. Yet when he snuck out of the navy base his father was stationed at when he was ten and ran into one Portgas D. Rouge, captain of the Klondike pirates and his soon-to-be captain, he never realized how much she'd change his world.
It took months (years, really, but he started going along with her and the others after about half a year) for him to accept that they weren't going to punch him over the head whenever he spoke his mind. That it was wrong to do that, even if they would get into fistfights amongst themselves every now and again, they at least were on even footing. It took care and kindness and a gentleness of a family he never truly experienced for him to blossom into a carefree and happy teenager.
Rouge never yelled at him for his dreams, never hit him upside the head for being honest; Rouge let him cuddle with her on stormy nights when it was best to let the navigator do their own thing, and the cabin boy would just get in the way. Rouge encouraged him to challenge Roger when he was allowed to officially meet their ally, saying that they'd beat him to the end of the line. Rouge laughed and held him back when Roger accepted the challenge without a care.
Rouge gently pushed him towards Shanks and Buggy, Roger's cabin boys; she knew it would do him good to know kids his own age, and he hit it off with Shanks immediately. Buggy claimed to find him annoying, but would never push him away when he clung to him and would listen to any stories he wanted to tell.
All those forms of family - happy, healthy, good - made him realize that Garp just... wasn't a good father. He wasn't the worst that he and the crew had come across, but he certainly wasn't good, not in the way the Klondikes or the Rogers were.
So as he sat beside Rouge, the woman who showed him what family really was, as she took her last breath with that man in the same room? As he tried taking his nephew, the result of the love that joined his two true families? Anger filled Luffy, and he refused. "He deserves to grow up loved, and - an' I know you wouldn't be able to do it. Not by yourself. Not when you couldn't do it for me."
Garp looks hurt and so, so exhausted when the words register. He doesn't deny it, though; he can't say he'd done no wrong when the proof is in front of him. "That's..." He starts, trailing off as he brings a calloused hand up, rubbing it with his other. "We can do that. Just let me take the both of you to Foosha so that the marines might take a little longer to find you both." Closing his eyes halfway through, Garp looked his age, looked his experiences - looked like a man who lost a son for all that he was still alive, looked a man who saw his best friend rival lose his head on an executioner's platform.
He looked like a man who finally realized that the marines weren't all that good, not when he learned of what they did to this island's people.
And maybe, just maybe, that made the anger and hurt within Luffy's chest ease a little. Maybe it made yearning for a father he never truly had rise to the top, almost poking its' head above the surface. Maybe it made him mourn the loss of a family that never really was after his mother passed.
Maybe it made him vow to be better for the freckled boy in his arms, but also to let the boy have a chance at a grandfather.
Giving a slow nod, he carefully wiped his face with a suntanned arm, trying to rid himself of any evidence of grief. "That's probably best, huh." Bitterness still dripped from his words, but it was less at Garp this time. "Can we, um. Can I give her a proper funeral first? Not the one that the villagers would wanna give her. She always said she wanted to be buried where she could watch the sun rise, and -" his voice cracked and he had to take a breath to keep himself together, as if any sixteen year old should have to keep themselves from falling apart at the loss of a loved one, "an' none of the cemeteries here have good views of it."
-x-x-x-
With a sweaty brow, burning eyes, and a new determination, Portgas D. Luffy stepped onto a Marine ship with his father and his nephew. He would never - could never - be a father to the chubby baby in his arms, but by the gods would he be the best uncle this world to him.
Looking at Garp's longing glances to the newborn, a burning jealousy tried pushing itself to the surface, but he shoved it down. Instead, he hesitantly offered Ace - Gol D. Ace, or Portgas D. Ace, whichever the babe would prefer once he was old enough to choose - to his honorary grandfather. "Be careful with him, an' support his head an' neck. Rouge lectured me enough on how to hold a baby that she'd rise up to clobber you if you don't do it right." Luffy said, ears burning a bit; Garp probably already knew how to properly hold a baby considering he'd had two, but he didn't want to risk it.
The older man blinked dumbly at him for a moment before he reached out and took Ace with a carefulness that Luffy had never seen from him. Nodding in approval, he looked away again, but made sure to keep watch from the corner of his eye.
As they made it farther into the ship and to the quarters Luffy and Ace would be staying in, it became a bit obvious to Luffy that his father might have started changing, if only a little. If only enough for him to be able to provide the care to Ace that Luffy had craved as a child. And maybe that stung, to feel that he wasn't worth the effort to care, and maybe it warmed him a little, to know that he might not be left to care for a baby all on his own.
And maybe he wished he could forgive Garp as easily as he could yearn for the love that he shows Ace.
It was very clear that it would take time; time, effort, and a lot of patience for any sort of bond to return between father and son, but he didn't want to be the reason that Ace missed out on a family member. Not when it would just be because of years of hurt and anger that Ace had nothing to do with.
Luffy would handle anything for Ace, whether it be fighting back the world government or simply being in the same vicinity as Garp.
Stopping in front of a door, the man and the boy looked at each other for a moment. Carefully, gently, Garp handed Ace to Luffy as if the teenager would implode if he were away from him for more than a few minutes at a time. "This is where the two of you will be staying until we get to Foosha," Garp said, as if he didn't show more vulnerability in the last ten minutes than he had in the ten years Luffy had lived around him, "if either of you need anything, just give a shout - the journey will only be about a week at most, so hopefully nothing happens between now an' then."
"Oh, trust me, I'm gonna bitch up a storm if anything goes wrong while I'm on here." Luffy said without a care, the straw hat Shanks had given him because he couldn't handle the emotions tied to it flopping off his head and onto his back as he looked up at Garp's face. "An' if anyone gives me or Ace grief about bein' here, I'm gonna hit 'em. Just so you know."
Pinching the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger, Garp took a deep breath, clearly trying not to start yelling. "I wouldn't expect anything less." He finally settled on, letting out an irritated huff, and Luffy had to give him points for reigning himself in. It drew a laugh out of him, and he had to hold Ace close to keep from shaking him too much. It almost felt like drums bashed with each laugh - Rouge always loved it, saying his fruit made his laughs sound even more lovely than they were before he'd awakened it, which helped him feel a little better about it when he'd get a bit too loud or rowdy.
Garp wasn't expecting it, clearly, as he gaped at Luffy. To his credit though, he didn't mention it, and the expression melted into a softer one after a moment.
Hopefully this trip wouldn't be so bad.
-x-x-x-
By day three, Luffy was ready to kill someone.
Dreams of a bloody and freckled face and "thank you for loving me"s haunted him whenever he slept, and he thanked the gods that Ace was a fairly well behaved baby, otherwise he'd have lost his shit the first night. He whimpered and he wept but he didn't belt out screams too often, usually only when he needed his diaper changed. Garp was smart enough to stock up on plenty of baby supplies while Luffy had been busy with Rouge's grave, so he didn't have to worry about that, if nothing else.
He itched to fight in a way that he hadn't since the first few months of Rouge's pregnancy; being stuck on pushed buttons that he didn't know he had after a lifetime of having no set home, and with being in an unfamiliar vessel surrounded by potential enemies, his nerves were pretty well frayed. Near-paranoia that someone would somehow figure out who Ace's parentage was ate at him any time he left their quarters, and he hated that eyes were on him at all times when he was out and about. No one said anything after Garp claimed him and Ace as his son and grandson, but he knew they didn't believe him.
His observation haki was far too good for that. Hell, his natural ability to read people was too good for that.
But it wasn't his place to say anything since it wasn't harmful.
Sucking it up was the best he could do as he trudged to the galley, Ace held in one arm, the other open so he could grab some food for himself. The babe was asleep for the moment, having woken up earlier in the morning, but Luffy still had a bag slung over a shoulder with milk and everything else that was needed for preparing it in the off chance he woke up hungry.
Hatred for the world radiated from the teenager as he thanked the cook but said nothing else, slumping against an empty table only a few moments before Garp joined him. It made him barely resist groaning all dramatic-like - he didn't have the energy for the awkward small talk and eventual request to hold Ace, but he would continue being civil for the moment.
"You look like shit this morning, brat. Didn't you sleep?" The Marine asked, shoveling food into his face at a somewhat faster pace than Luffy. Nearly choking as he tried to keep from laughing at the dirty look he received, he pounded his leg (not the table, not since he scared Ace the first day he did it; turns out, babies didn't particularly care for loud noises) and chugged orange juice.
"I would have never guessed, thanks for lettin' me know!" Luffy said sarcastically, shoving a heaping forkful of eggs into his mouth while scowling. Grumbling as he chewed, it took a few more moments before Garp fully regained his composure, but he certainly drew more attention than Luffy preferred right now. "I jus' wanna be off here already!" Luffy whined after swallowing, flopping his head onto the table beside his plate, careful not to disrupt Ace.
Ruffling Luffy's hair and getting a pout in return, Garp gave a not-quite sympathetic look. "If the weather holds, we'll be at Foosha in a couple days, so keep it together until then." He said, going back to his food. "I think you'll like Makino - she's your cousin on your ma's side, and she's a little spitfire. About, what, nine now? That sounds about right. The mayor takes care of her an' probably won't have any trouble helping you out if you'll need it."
The news that he'd have family there - if quite a bit younger than himself - seemed to perk Luffy up. "Ma had family from Foosha?" He asked; Garp never really talked about his mother, not since she'd passed before he could remember anything of her. "Did she have a home there? Can I get it for me an' Ace?"
Leaning back on the bench, Garp seemed to think for a moment. "She had a sister, but her an' her husband both went off as bounty hunters and never came back. As for her home, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get it, considering she left it to me. Might need fixed up, if you're really set on it."
Nodding quickly and getting an unhappy whimper from Ace, Luffy seemed to find something to really look forward to.
-x-x-x-
When the ship finally docked at the little town's port, Luffy wasted no time in gathering his few belongings and Ace's supplies and getting on land. Standing at the top of the steps leading to the village, it hit him for the first time just what he was giving up to give Ace a family.
He wouldn't be able to form his own crew, not like he'd always talked about with Shanks and Buggy and Rouge. He wouldn't be able to be the next to the end of the line.
He wouldn't feel the freedom he'd reveled in for those five years, at least not for several more years. Not until Ace didn't need him anymore.
And maybe he wasn't quite okay with it, but he wasn't going to give up on Ace. He'd have time to be selfish in the future.

ASL 2000’s AU
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I cooked. I hardcore cooked with this.
design commentary:
I loved the 2000's, so this was a real treat to design. I was only cognitive for like a couple years of it but i still remember a lot of the fashion from when it was going on. ESPECIALLLY. the short sleeves over the long sleeve shirts. 2000's loved their layers.
So Luffy was pretty easy to design. He was the first one i designed. i love when theres an easy translation for the Sunny and Merry into AU's.
Ace is very heavily inspired by Avril Lavigne. I was having trouble with designing him, but then Complicated by Avril came on the 2000's playlist i was watching/listening to for inspiration, and suddenly i understood everything. It all made sense to me.
Ace was M A D E for this au. I was thinking that as i was drawing him, but then i realized that Ace literally was made in like 2001 so... yeah. he was made for the 2000's.
Sabo was the last one i finished, i wasnt feeling too inspired with him, but i talked with friends who were more cognitive during that time than I, and one of them provided me a very helpful article about fashion trends at the time that included football and basketball jerseys. I put him into each of those, but none of them fit him quite well. I then put him in a baseball jersey, and although it makes him look the 𝓌𝒽𝒾𝓉𝑒𝓈𝓉, it fit him best. So i kept it.
I did get to put Usopp in the basketball jersey though so it wasnt all for naught.
Franky's hair was also very easily translated into the 2000's, like every boy had that hair, besides the mullet tail at the bottom but franky's just built different like that.

Ace wakes up on a random island two years after his death as a ten-year-old. But he has no memory of his adult life. Sabo just died, and he has a little brother to look after. Or maybe an older brother?
There is a bit of time between Ace waking up and Luffy finding him.
Sorry this is so long I'm still trying to figure out how to do comic-y things.
Part two

Good company in a moment of calm
(Spade Pirate Sabo AU)
Here are some extra thoughts on the making of this comic! This one is meant to sort of flesh out their pre-reveal dynamic a tiny bit :)
There’s some amount of Sabo that is still kind of terrified of fire for reasons he doesn’t know (because amnesia) but Ace is also fire, and it’s comforting and warm in a way that he’s not used to fire being. While the beginning of the comic is practically drowning in blues and cool moonlight, as sabo’s attempt to distract himself from the fires in his dreams, the later half is meant to take a warmer tone with Ace’s arrival, accompanied by the sunrise.
I think that Sabo is a bit hesitant to lower his guard around Ace because he keeps getting dreams (vague snippets of memories that he thinks are dreams) about someone similar to Ace as a child and after Knowing that he has trauma from whatever happened to his past he’s not sure he wants to dig it up if there’s the slightest bit that it could ruin his current relationship with his captain. That and his association with fire.
The next comic I have planned is the first meeting between Sabo and Ace, so the comics are going to jump around a fair bit!
Altogether this took about 10 hours so I definitely need to figure out a way to simplify the comic process lmao

When Shanks and Luffy had been gone for well over an hour, Ace and Sabo knew something was up, and Makino did too. Granted, Makino seemed to know something was up before they even left, so she probably knows something that they don't.
Which is... Really frustrating, to say the least. How come she gets to know something important when they don't and they live with him?
With each passing minute that neither of their uncles showed back up, the more impatient they would get, looking between each other and scowling at any of Shanks' crewmates who would come a little too close. "What do you think they're up to?" Ace grumbled, clearly becoming more and more agitated. "A normal talk shouldn't take this long, should it? 'Specially not with Lu. He don't have the attention span for this long."
Sabo let out a thoughtful hum, leaning backwards on the stool. "I dunno. I don't think it should've took this long." He agreed, pulling himself forward as he tipped a bit too far back. "Wanna go sneak on the ship an' see what's takin' so long?"
Looking at his brother, he was met with a grin and an enthusiastic nod. "I thought you'd never ask!" Hopping down and beelining for the door with Sabo on his heels, they ignored Makino's calls to figure out where they were going.
With as many times as they had greeted the pirates as they docked, they had no trouble finding their ship, nor did they have any trouble climbing aboard it. The hard part was finding Luffy and Shanks, considering they'd never properly boarded the Red Force, and there was no sign of where they'd went as they looked around the deck. Looking at each other, they slowly began making their way to one of the doors and opening it to see a stairway leading deeper into the ship.
It was beginning to feel less like a good idea to come and search the ship themselves with every passing moment, but they continued onwards, keeping their footsteps as quiet as they could as they kept their eyes and ears out for any sign of their uncles. Peeking into every open room they passed, they mostly saw storage rooms and what looked to be the navigation room, but no meeting rooms or bedrooms. Sabo looked over to Ace to see him glaring in the last room they looked into, and he found himself silently agreeing - this wasn't going as well as they hoped. It really didn't seem like they were going to find either of them at the rate they were going.
Continuing onwards a bit more, they finally seemed to find a bedroom; a lamp was still burning and the room was a mess, but most notably were the two familiar pairs sandals left by themselves beside the bed. It didn't look like there had been a physical fight aside from ruffled bedsheets, but both of the brothers felt a great deal of unease at knowing that neither of them had taken the time to slip their shoes back on before taking off to who-knows-where.
"Should we... Leave?" Sabo asked, quietly, hesitant to break the silence as they both stood alone in the unfamiliar place.
Ace shrugged before knocking his knuckles together, eyebrows knitted together. "Well, they clearly ain't here," he said, a bit more forcefully than he meant to, "so I don't know why we should stay. But I dunno where they would've went, so - so I dunno what to do after this."
"Maybe one of 'em made it back to the bar? Or Lu mighta went home?" Sabo suggested, taking a step back towards the door and waiting to see what Ace would do. Still knocking his knuckles together, the freckled boy finally nodded, if reluctantly. He looked at the two pairs of sandals left on the ground and began charging his way out, Sabo following at a slightly less angry pace as they left the ship much quicker than they had boarded it.
Stomping back into the bar, they were met by soft conversation and Makino sounding as if her patience was running out. "You actually thought that anything about that was going to go well?" She asked, and when they pushed through to see who she was speaking to, it wasn't much of a surprise that it was a bare-footed Shanks. "Even I know that you can't go springing at him like that and expect him to keep a cool head, whether you were just worried for him or not."
"Listen, I know that, I jus', do you know where he mighta went? That's all I wanted to know!" The captain was holding his hands together and hitting the heel of one foot on the top of his other, anxiety practically oozing off of him. "I lost him an' I wanna go apologize -"
Hearing the last bit was enough to set Ace off, his face scrunching up as he stomped over and tugged on Shanks' pant leg; the moment he turned enough, a small but powerful fist smashed his jewels without giving him a chance to get a word in. "What didja do to Lu?" Ace snarled as Shanks' hands shot down and he doubled over partway. "You said you was jus' gonna talk to him, how the hell'd you screw up so bad!"
Content to let Ace get his frustration out and reasoning that they did still have Luffy's permission to hit Shanks, Sabo stood behind him, glaring at their uncle as he struggled to regain his composure. Makino looked less surprised and more resigned at the events playing out before her, as well as a bit worried. For Shanks' ability to ever procreate or for Luffy, it wasn't clear.
Flipping off the kids as he muttered curse after curse under his breath, Shanks finally seemed to get his head back onto his shoulders. "I didn't mean to do shit y' li'l crotch goblin!" He hissed through still-clenched teeth as he slowly began the rise to standing up straight, showing misty eyes and furrowed brows. "Good Lords, you couldn't've held back a bit? If you wanna talk to someone, y' don't try to break their dick!"
"Well, you did somethin', so you needed to be hit." Ace said matter-of-factly, arms crossed and fidgety as he glared up at Shanks.
"Lu did tell us we could hit you in the balls a bit back, so we were jus' a little slow takin' up the offer." Sabo added unhelpfully, getting flipped off again, though he gave it right back.
"If I didn't care 'bout you two so much I'd beat the piss outta you," Shanks said, finally at his regular height, even though his legs were a bit bent. A few of his crew let out muffled laughs over it, but they were paid no mind. "Why do y'all have to choose violence every time?"
Ace rolled his eyes, hugging himself tighter. "You deserved it an' you still haven't said what you did to make Lu run off." He spat, literally, making Shanks cringe at the feeling of spit hitting his foot. "'Cause he don't get upset easy an' he don't like leavin' shit un-fixed even if he sucks at fixin' shit, so you had to've done somethin' big."
That seemed to kick something into place in Shanks' mind, if nothing else, and he went back to looking distressed as he glanced between them and Makino. "Okay, okay, I yelled at him an' he yelled at me an' then he ran out and now I don't have any clue where to even start lookin' for him," he said quickly, clearly repeating what he said before they'd arrived, "and I needed help figurin' out where he goes when he gets mad'r upset?"
"Considering this is the first time that I've seen that he's gotten angry enough to storm off instead of trying to clear things up, I'm not going to be any help." Makino said, a silent 'so figure it out yourself' tacked onto the end.
Sabo noticed Ace taking deep breaths to try not to hit Shanks again, so he stepped forward a bit and bumped their shoulders. "Yeah, he usually stays to understand why the person he was arguin' with said what they did, so you screwed up big time, uncle." He tried putting a bit of disappointment in his voice like Luffy would when they break one of the few rules he'd placed. "C'mon, Ace, let's go take a nap at the house an' see if he shows up by the time we get back up, and if he hasn't, we'll go checkin' the forest."
He gently pulled his brother by the arm and was met by some resistance, but not enough to keep him from getting him away from the situation. When they were back out into the night air for a few minutes and the quiet seemed to work its magic, Ace let out a loud yell and started shaking his hands rapidly. Sabo watched to make sure he wouldn't hurt himself in his stimming like Luffy would, but didn't interrupt Ace as he tried to do his breathing exercises along with them.
Sabo did guide him so he'd be sitting on the ground after it didn't seem to help after a little while, and just sat with him as he slowly grounded himself. He knew better than to touch him while he was as overwhelmed as he was, even if he wanted to at least try to give him physical comfort.
It took a while longer for Ace to start calming down enough to speak again, but Sabo didn't mind waiting. He wasn't going to be like the Outlooks, making him get better on their time instead of his, so he was patient and calm with him. Maybe he wouldn't have been a year ago, before Luffy had showed him that kindness works better than impatience, but he knew better now. He was better now. He was always better than the Outlooks, even if he couldn't get himself to believe so.
"'M sorry." Ace mumbled, still seeming to be a bit overstimulated and not up for talking. That was fine, though, and Sabo shook his head.
"Don't be dumb, you don't have to apologize for anythin'." He said sternly, resisting the urge to flick Ace's forehead. "You up for heading home for a nap or do you still need a couple minutes?"
Ace didn't move for a couple seconds, thinking it over; finally, he nodded, and shakily got to his feet. Sabo let him set the pace as they finally made the rest of their way home, opening the door to a dark and quiet house. Both of them scrunched their faces up at how dead it was in comparison to when Luffy was there, but they just headed to their bedroom without speaking a word, as if just one would shatter the world they'd stepped into.
They climbed into their respective beds, but both laid awake for quite a while. The silence was heavy and uncomfortable, and even though both were exhausted, it was a fight to get the rest they needed.

I will make no excuses. This is the biggest example of self indulgent art ive done since my birthday last year. I have no fucking clue what au this is. I jsut wanted to draw Sabo as a sheep, Ace as slutty and greasy as i could with him still being hot in my eyes, and luffy with adorable little bear ears. Also that shading on luffy’s pic was really fun to make.
I had a physical reaction to drawing the little animals. Theyre. Everything. To me.
Why luffy is bear- bears are so food motivated i love them.
Why sabo is sheep- rebelling against fate’s design, breaking from herd mentality, etc etc
Why ace is coyote- it’s really funny how people keep thinking theyre cats or dogs and take them in but theyre just feral creatures. Very similar to Ace me thinks.
I wanted to make luffy and ace typical predators of sheep. Something something them born to destroy the system of all that has ever been (harking back to that herd mentality) something something also breaking that promise too to be brothers with someone from that system
