Re: previous post (if I end up deleting it then for posterity: the feeling-weird-about-asking-pde-prof-for-a-reference-because-we're-friends-and-I-don't-want-him-to-think-that-was-a-strategy-to-get-a-reference one), one thing about me is I am... idk how to put this. Weirdly hung up on formality? Go really hard on separating formal from personal mentally? If we have any kind of formal or professional relationship I will have a really hard time seeing that someone might also want to be friends and will be deeply confused by any friendly gestures and may come off as cold/stand-offish in return, but once I do consider us friends I get, well, like this about the possibility of needing to ask for anything in the formal context.

Which, I'm slowly coming to the realisation that most people are way more relaxed and casual about this kind of stuff, and that my attitude comes off as, at worst, very cold and even failing to see people I do have some kind of formal dynamic with as people beyond their role. Idk what the mental block is but I'm trying to get over it.
