Going through the Digimon tag on my blog, I came across the post for Mimato Year by @mimatoweek from last year. I had promised in the tags to participate but then totally forgot about it (oops!). Last year in February I had an idea for March/White Day, and reading the post, I once again had one for it (though it's probably not the same).

Anyway, here's my little ficlet for White Day, I hope you like it!

Clean and neat

„You should wear white“, Mimi said off-hand while painting her nails a vibrant green colour.

Yamato, who’d been sitting on his bed strumming his bass, blinked. „I have no idea what you’re talking about.“ He looked up to see her still only paying attenttion to her nails and not even giving him so much as a glance.

„Duh! I mean for your video shoot of course! It would look so cool if you were all wearing white. I was thinking maybe tuxedos but that would be way too formal. You’re still a rock band after all. But white blazers and tee-shirts, white chino pants and white sneakers would be the way to go. I can see you performing in an otherwise all-black environment like in that new Halestorm video, The Church or The Steeple or something. You know, I’m not a big rock fan but Sora likes them and this song is absolute killer, as I guess you would say. – Or would all-white be better? With black you’d of course had a stark contrast but with white it would look all clean and neat…“

While Mimi was still rambling, creating the vision of Knife of Day’s next music video as she was talking, Yamato got up to put his bass away. He closed the clasps on the case before padding across the room to where Mimi was sitting on his desk, legs dangling in sync to her musings.

His initial reaction to her idea had been to snort. Knife of Day wearing white! How ridiculous! They were a bonafide rock band whose members wore nothing but black, a bit of leather, here and there some checkered slippers, and maybe a bit of blood red or deep dark blue. But white? No way!

But the longer Mimi’s ramble went the more the idea grew on him. He could see it before him, his bandmates and him in a bright white room, similar to The Hives in their Walk Idiot Walk video. Their style would be somewhere between formal and casual, like Mimi had described. Maybe there were accents with some red flower petals floating around but otherwise it would be just like she had said: clean and neat.

He reached her now, standing before her. Her dangling feet hitting his legs lightly finally made her look up. She tilted her head curiously, halting in painting her video vision in the brightest (or better say) whitest colours. But before she could ask why he had suddenly come over she was stopped short by a kiss from Yamato. It started out tenderly but grew more and more intense, Mimi entangling her legs so that Yamato could press his body against hers, reassuringly and needily.

Coming up for air, both faces flushed red to the hairline, Mimi still managed a cheeky grin. „What was that for, Casanova? Not that I don’t enjoy kissing you. On the contrary, I do very much indeed. But that seemed a little random.“

Yamato shook his head as an answer, the wisps of his fringe falling into his eyes. „It was not random at all. This was for your brilliant idea for our new music video. It’s perfect. I couldn’t have come up with a better concept.“

Mimi smiled, it swung somewhere between the expression of a cat that got the cream and genuine gratitude over his compliment. „You know you can trust me in all things fashion“ she said with a toothy grin before her face turned soft. „And I’d be more than happy to help you set it up.“

Yamato replied with a similarly soft smile. Then he said „I hadn’t expected anything less.“

hewwooo tuesday here's a silly little question for you since your "check it out, frogs!!" blog title always delights me: how do each of your characters feel about frogs? 👀

I *love* Frogs, but how do the blorbeans feel about em...? Well... I had to really think about it TTuTT BUT! Chuu favors mechanical creatures over flesh 'n blood ones, and while her getting to the First is ambiguous and mysterious (being a non-wol, I just try not to think about it too much) She DOES... love the Dwarven Mecha frogs. And. The biggest frog of them all... Formi.... <3 …. So she doesn’t care for frogs much. She has sent Tuesday out frog catching for alchemical ingredients though….

Colette... Doesn't have any feelings this way or that about frogs, really. They're small, they're kinda slimey? but mostly they're just, very small. Except Gigantoads, I suppose, but those are a toad, and decidedly less slimey, by virture of being a toad. The ambivalence remains though! They're not that tricky to fight so long as you know how to wriggle out of their tongue grasp. (I did... take some frog-related Colette pictures tho >:3 I'm just gonna, post em a bit later, since the theme got away from me) Gigantoads make for a decent enough meal so long as you prep the meat right :T the legs are the most edible part yk.

Ishi is much more fond of Poro Roggo's, Matoya's froggy familiars. They're wearing LITTLE HATS ! They wave little canes! They're quite frankly adorable and they have little croaking voices. What's not to enjoy? (And also, there's something really nice about being out in the marshes of Mor Dhona and finding a little frog instead of a Morbol ready to stink bomb you, HAH)

Tuesday shivers when he thinks about frogs (knows the difference between a frog and a toad, still pictures a Gigantoad first, and does not much love being yanked mid-cast from his Ley lines into body slamming range.) Finds just a regular little frog endearing and will get down in the mud and muck to look at it though. Is especially fascinated by frogs that stick to things like leaves and trees and their camouflages uwu He’s the one who likely knows the most about frogs, and would gladly tell you more about them. Probably compares information with Erenville, if they ever meet up in non-life-threatening-situations.

Tangy finds them fun ! If she’s on a walk or a run or an errand and it’s drizzly and she sees a little frog hop across the pathway there’s literally 0 inhibitions in her body that stop her from also hopping or skipping for at least a minute (still on her way, but a frogs leap is so charming. They’re like tiny dragoons! She points this similarity out to Estinien once. Krile laughs, Estinien looks constipated- you know the face.) She also has a weird compulsion to put them into her mouth, though, so if she catches one….. make sure it’s not poisonous. She doesn’t even plan to eat it! They just look like they would fit perfectly in her kitty jaws (she is sometimes correct).

Mochiie had to get used to frog song when he moved to Gridania. The rivers and lakes and greenery abounding let the little critters thrive in a way they don’t particularly on the Steppe. …. He comes around to finding it relaxing and feels uneasy when he doesn’t hear them anymore lmfao. In non-WoL au’s, probably sometimes tasks adventurer’s with catching frogs for alchemical ingredients OR to bring back to the pond he’s been carefully maintaining to encourage the little beepers to live in it. (Btw, his favorite frog singers are the Pobblebonk or Banjo Frog [YT Link], and the Pacific Chorus Frog [YT Link] 🥰)

Levraut…. I’m still not sure. 🤔 I think he’d like them, but he wouldn’t feel strongly about them. He WOULD eat them though. As would Colette and Mochi… I mentioned Tangy liked to stick them in her mouth but actually eating them seems like a waste, since she’s so big and they’re so small. Like eating a blueberry. I can say his favorite frogs would be the Blue Jeans Poison Frog, for their striking jackets of warning colors, and the desert rain frog, whose perfect spherical nature and grumpy face is endearing.

There's a fanart in Matt's tag that includes Tai making a borderline aheago face so I'm gonna do a quick meta so I can push it through (please don't ask any more about this).

You ever see old dub material and like, it looks like this? This is from a book I own-

Like, where did this come from? And the dub of Ep. 1, when he first meets the Digimon- "no autographs please". Where did it come from? I really honestly don't understand.

Now, it's not as bad as, like, the Davis/Daisuke situation (where I had to go full Kingdom Hearts and refer to them as different people). It kind of works because it can be used as a cover. Matt doesn't want to deal with Feelings when there's a brother to protect and two worlds to save. But his Feelings tend to boil over at the slightest provocation.

Yet the dub kind of...ignores this. For the "cool kid" persona which ??? Maybe they were trying to make him more like Gary Oak from Pokemon (y'know- the ten year old with a car/cheerleaders). But by the end, it's clear that doesn't work. The Crest of Friendship kind of seals the deal as to who Matt really is.

I feel like this weirdness/02 playing up the "pretty boy" angle led to the likes of The Lost Temple of Ishida, which by itself contributed to years of mischaracterization. If you know about Goth TK and the Tokomon who lived in Tai's hair or whatever (who wasn't TK's partner, I think)- those broke containment from there. It was a HUGE fansite. It even fooled me.

Fortunately, you don't see too much OOC "cool guy" Matt today, unless it specifically refers to 02/tri. I feel like better access to the subs and the Lost Temple becoming inactive (along with the "squee kawaii" fangirl mindset falling out of fashion) made it easier to analyze Matt as he really is. Unfortunately, he seems less popular than back in the day. Which sucks. I want to ramble about him more.

There was still one thing that she needed to do, Mimi reminded herself of it almost every day, but she also hoped that she wouldn't have to be the one to take the first step.

During lunch with her mother in her office one day, however, her mother was quick to reprimand her for putting off thanking someone who'd taken care of her in a difficult situation. And that's how Mimi was forced to pick up her phone to send a message to Yamato, almost a month since he'd made her crash at his place unknowingly, under the watchful gaze of her mother.

Sent, 13:01: Hey, sorry I didn't reach out earlier. Thank you for looking out for me that day!

It was hard for her to control the heat that flooded her cheeks when her phone buzzed back with a response before she could set it aside. Her mother raised an amused eyebrow but did not comment, turning her attention to the food on the table, giving Mimi the space to respond at her pace.

Received, 13:01: Don't worry about it. How are you holding up?

Sent, 13:04: I'm persisting.

She contemplated her response for a few minutes before deciding that staying true and simple to her feelings was the best way to go. Yamato had been in her position too, so any lie she made up about how well she was coping with the situation would not only be unfair to him but also easily caught.

Received, 13:05: You always do. Remember to take it easy.

His quick reply made her face warm again but this time she took a deep breath and kept her phone aside, returning her focus towards the salad in front of her. She didn’t want to read into his words, he was probably taken aback by how she reacted that day and wanted some closure on whether she was okay. Mimi predicted that they would go back to their rare, once in a blue moon interactions after this, and there probably won’t be a second time for her to receive a reply from him without delay.

"You know, the real surprise is you buying something from my website," Mimi said, resting her chin in her palm, now brimming with the confidence to meet Yamato's gaze.

"Well, had I known that I was eligible for such a special delivery, I would've placed an order much sooner." He didn't hold back his smirk this time, as he reached forward for his glass and took another small sip.

Do not let him get to you, do not let him get to you.

Mimi repeated the words in her head like a mantra, keeping her confident demeanour intact through pursed lips. It was pretty normal for them to fall into a pattern of taunting each other, challenging each other for fun to see how far the other could go. This was perhaps one of the reasons Mimi was worried about meeting him like this, with no buffer between them she dreaded if she'd even get the chance to share her appreciation before their conversation ended in an argument.

"It's not a big deal, I do it for Hikari chan all the time." She responded, tucking a strand of loose hair behind her ear just so her hand wouldn't be tempted to reach for the wine glass and finish whatever remained of the drink.

"I see."

Note for Kizuna: though the specific singing example is from Marionette no Kokoro, where Akki uses a deeper register, Kizuna's singing is also like the songs where uses higher registers like Date Parade and Closet Fashion Lover. I just wanted to put emphasis on her range as it was a big reason why I chose her for Kizuna's vc.

Hello, it's Ni again with a little idea in mind: What if we start breaking the comfort zone and trying the most difficult part of Digimon writing/arting? Yes, the digimon.

I'm making this post an encouragement for you to start trying something new and expand your skills -- I'll share some of the tips I've been using for a whole decade when it comes to writing and drawing digimon with their human partners.

For writing:

My method is: making any inner monologue into a conversation and letting the digimon complete, elaborate, or comment on the human partner's lines.

The technique of the former has been observed by some people that this is basically what happens in-series (at least in Adventure/02 material) -- all of that planned inner monologue you had planned for the character? turn it into a conversation with the digimon. There's so little inner thoughts depicted in Adventure and 02 BUT there's a ton of little exchanges between the human with their partner. It also helps that in Adventure & 02, the digimon are somewhat an "other self" of the children, so they basically know them enough to point out when they're hesitant, nervous, angry, embarrassed or happy.

It also helps that certain digimon partners like Daisuke's V-mon, Jou's Gomamon and Wallace's Gummymon/Terriermon have no filter and try to encourage their partners by either roasting them by sheer accident. Remember, the digimon are extremely honest when it comes to their partners feelings, they can spot a lie pretty easily. So why not write Taichi saying a lie to hide something and Agumon innocently commenting aloud that that was a lie?

The latter technique is my own personal flavor. I'll give you an example: Daisuke is explaining his delicious new ramen recipe, and V-mon adds some commentaries like a TV announcer on TV commercials by saying "And there's more!" "Look at this delicious ramen broth!" "It's 100% approved by the customers!"

The digimon usually tends to put extra emphasis on what their partner is saying, or they make little comments! Or even, they might elaborate or complete phrases as well. The reverse can happen too, of course. Think about stuff like Happy Smile, 2-TOP, Fly High, HEY-Rasshai!, Forever Adolescence, etc songs where they have a little talk between the songs, or are bickering, or are completing the others’ lines.

For Drawing:

This part is a little more trickish, but here we go. Let’s watch a few shots of Digimon anime/movies and analyze how they depict the kids interacting with their digimon.

Since Tailmon is small, Hikari crouches to her eye level in order to talk with her in Kizuna. Note that this is how you can have both in the same scene/shot when Tailmon is not in Hikari’s arms. You need to plan where to place the digimon in your art, by knowing its size in-series, which form you want to feature in the picture, and where to place them.

For the celebration of Hunters’ final episode 10th Anniversary in 2022, The Digimon Web profile on twitter posted this illust of Gumdramon and Tagiru. Note that Gumdramon is the main star of the composition and Tagiru is behind him, as if he was commanding Gumdramon in a battle.

Now, some personal examples from my own art, to show how I deal with this:

This composition plays with the idea of a selfie. Gumdramon is being held by Tagiru here.

Middle Schooler Daisuke & Chibimon meets Kiyoshiro & Jellymon. The interaction between them is Daisuke and Chibimon looking at Kiyocchi’s hand, which is also the exact arm Jellymon is tied to.

Now, for bigger mons: Know their size and how to place them in the scenario, like Angoramon is here in this official art:

Since Angoramon is bigger than Jellymon and Gammamon, they decided to place him and Ruli behind the other two pairs. You can see this composition shows an interesting dynamic between them and also Jellymon on top of Kiyoshiro’s head.

Remember: the bigger the evolution/form you want to depict with their human partner, the more trickish might be. But don't worry! I trust you to figure it out! You can do it!!

I hope this post can help people, those observations and tips really helped me once and are still helping me when working on digi-stuff ;v;
