A Northwestern University and Facebook friend messaged me today with the link to the obituary of my dorm roommate. This is the person I called my best friend until he became a deplorable. In 2019 I wrote this about it:

For about forty years I called my former college roommate my best friend. Charismatic guy, natural leader; did law school in a two-year program - that’s where I got the idea for Guenevere and Lancelot to do law school in two years in AKOTAS. I gave Lancelot this guy’s birthday. About ten years ago I learned he was a Tea Partier. Then in September 2017 I looked back on his Facebook for the previous year for something friendly to write about in birthday greetings. I saw an entry he wrote the day after the presidential election where he said he was glad to see “real Americans” in charge again. I lost all interest in wishing him a happy birthday, then and since.

In the summer of 2018 I wrote on Facebook that I had decided against attending my 40-year high school class reunion because the odds were too good that people I used to like and respect are now supporters of the fake president. I was afraid I wouldn’t be civil, but more afraid I would be civil and regret it afterwards. This guy argued with me about it, that I should be more open and friendly to people I don’t agree with. He stopped when I called the current administration and its supporters “fascist”, and said, “These are the kind of men your father went to war against” (his father was in the Polish army in World War II and afterwards immigrated here to the US). Afterwards I thought that he had stopped talking to me but thought that, if he had, it was no loss to me. Then he emailed me for my sixtieth birthday last weekend. I answered with the hard, sad truth that I can’t be friendly with someone who allies with the politics and morals he does. He replied tryna make it look as much as he could that it was his idea we won’t be talking any more. He talks in dogwhistles, so in private you’d have to engage to get him specific enough to refute, and when you don’t engage because you know better you’re living in a "bubble”. But in front of others when I brought out the honest vocabulary like fascist he ghosted. Growing up I thought he was Hawkeye Pierce but it turns out he’s Frank Burns.

I still think of him when I put the Master in The Hero of Three Faces and I probably always will.

It’s just that in my style there’s no nose to keep the eyes separated.

The captions are lyrics from Autopsy Garland by the Mountain Goats. I've been dreaming of making this for literal Years, and the mods for the zine let me do it for them! I'm still pretty proud of it, and only regret that I completely forgot to replace Col. Hsu with General Lee Oliver in the final. Sorry man.
