I feel like The Aurelian Cycle's obscurity in comparison to other dragon-related YA books (*cough* a certain romantasy whose sequel just recently came out *cough*) is partly because it's not heavy on the romance at all, the author almost never describes the more romantic scenes in detail, it's more focused on the nature of the relationships and how the charactere reflect on it

I mean, think about the tropes in Fourth Wing. Enemies to lovers where one's parent killed the other's. War college. Dragonrider military. Politics. The regime hiding secrets. All of these are present in The Aurelian Cycle, albeit with much, much better execution.

Fireborne did start slow, but I feel like that benefited the story. We're introduced to the status quo and established the world–this series is heavy on politics and questioning the government, less so on action and death.

The tropes are present, but not how most mainstream YA normally does them. It's not their lives at stake, it's their freedom, their identity, their values. It understands that death does not necessarily raise the stakes; they could lose more than that. Annie and Lee in technicality are enemies turned friends to lovers, but there's layers to their relationship. Even Power, the bully character, has layers. The Guardian school simultaneously gave and stripped them of freedom, instead of being straightfoward good or evil. It's all complicated, but it all works together to serve the theme of trying. "The point is trying."

I'm upset the series has ended, but I look forward to more of Rosaria Munda's work!

Power's Character arch is my favorite in this series. And this is one (of many) of my favorite power moments.

This is also good practice for me because I hate drawing people 🙃 so trying to draw the same person over and over was interesting.

It's subtle on the first read, but Power is like insanely smart and reads most people like a goddamned book.

He was the only one who learned about who Atreus really was during those private lessons(see the "am I the only one paying attention to that man" line) He realized exactly the kind of leader Atreus was, and the sort of man who could do the things he'd done to get into power.

Then we have Meg, my man took one look at her and KNEW. Like he tried so hard to get the idea across to Annie and she just wasn't having it.

Of course we have how he was able to socially and politically navigate around Ixion and squad in book 3.

This really comes from his more cynical realistic approach to things. Both Lee and Annie really are blinded by wanting to believe the best, and put faith in ideals. Power sees that those ideals are rooted in flawed individuals and acts accordingly. He assesses the person and is like "are they the type to do this?" and actually thinks about if someone is capable of (x action) The best example of this is the end of book 1 when he just straight up explains to Annie that there is no world where Atreus lets Lee live(when she naively thinks if Lee just does what he's told that Atreus will keep his word)

Like the quick reads he has on so many characters is insane.

And what does he use it for? Well kicking ass for one, but also being the best petty bitch we got.

He would have made such a good politician and honestly we were ROBBED.

Hopefully I'm not the only one who needed some actual grief scenes after the major sacrifice in the book??? Like that timeskip did us all dirty.

idt i’m wrong to suggest that power and antigone are written like fic draco and hermione since rosaria munda having read hp fics could back up the idea. perhaps, she saw potential in dramione just as many of us did? we won’t know unless someone asks and she confirms. 

but i’ve been considering the similarities between power-draco and antigone-hermione since fireborne. power’s patrician and draco’s a malfoy heir. both have aristocratic roots and bully (let’s be real) the female mc for coming from “lowly” backgrounds. antigone’s from a peasant family and shouldn’t have been able to become a dragonrider while hermione’s a muggle-born witch who the death eaters deem worthless. the rich pureblood supremacy bs is clearly in the aurelian cycle. 

after antigone beat power in their fight, he eventually supported her, offering to be her training partner. power was still an asshole, but he wanted antigone to be firstrider, not lee. i argue that this happens in dramione fics. like typical fic draco, power acknowledges the talent and brilliance of the girl he hates, works with her, and falls for her. the spillover is also very dramione of them. power riling antigone up so she could unleash a new strength. fic draco usually enjoys doing that, doesn’t he.

this might not be enough to make others recognize dramione as a possible source of inspiration for power and antigone. however, there’s an event in furysong which we should look at: ixion branding antigone. the stormscourge “s” on her leg is reminiscent of the slur “mudblood” on hermione’s arm. this was the scene that convinced me. power getting antigone something for that wound reminded me a little of beginning and end draco in particular as well.

i believe antigone and lee are soulmates, but i’m a sucker for enemies to lovers and power and antigone served. beautiful original lines and scenes and insane parallels with dramione. ofc i love them.

I just posted a gist about Furysong by Rosaria Munda. What a thrilling conclusion to a beautiful series. Simple with political intrigue, angst, dragons, morally grey characters and a narrative that will keep you hooked. Word of advice: don't get attached. My heart hurts. My hurt hurts. My heart is gone. It was amazing.

characterization and relationships in The Aurelian Cycle

a common criticism Fireborne gets is the slow start and how it starts off feeling generic? personally I liked that it opened with the tournament because it immediately established character dynamics and archetypes, which were then played with and even subverted later on

Lee choosing his new family, the Guardians over his surviving relatives made so much sense because we were already shown from the beginning how close he'd become to these people. Annie is narratively the most important person in his life, but Cor, Crissa, even Duck are given a lot of importance. He and Cor are like brothers, so Duck has become a sort of younger brother to him too. I love that Lee mentions becoming close with Cor and Crissa because they were the squadron leaders and had to cooperate often. It's understandable that Annie would be friends with Duck, who is often bullied. Outside of Lee and/or Annie, they have their own interactions as well. Cor and Annie are both protective of Duck and are friends. Annie and Crissa are roommates and get along better than the other girls. Crissa acts like an older sister to Duck because he's her squadron leader. What I'm saying is, all of their relationships with one another are so understandable and organic, none of their interactions feel forced and it gives the story so much heart.

I love, love LOVE the tiny bits of background sprinkled throughout the text about the side characters, among them Lee mentioning Crissa was nervous about being squadron leader, Annie's flashbacks with Duck, Lee and Annie visiting the Sutters often.

Even the minor characters have individual personalities with what little we get from them. Rock is a gentle giant who makes bets with his buddy Lotus, and they're always around each other. Alexa and Deirdre are Those Two Girls who giggle and snicker but are capable dragonriders themselves. Ola is the shy girl who sometimes participates in the fun. Max and Deirdre are together.

And the character who surprised me most: Power. I originally dismissed him to be the one-note bully archetype, but I got curious about his character after Annie defeated him in the tournament and he didn't throw a tantrum or anything (which was what I was expecting). He was an ass, sure, but then he turned out to be more complex than that. He helped Annie with mastering spillovers, which turned out to be the gateway to her ability to summon without a summoner. He genuinely tried to get her to win, and he only got better in the later books. That moment where it was revealed he was adopted was such a jaw-dropper because, like I said, I initially dismissed him to be a flat character (too used to this being a thing in YA) but there were more layers to him than I thought.

1. Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2023? moby dick! i totally did not expect to like this dusty tome so much but it was just too perfect a mix of tropy revenge tale, sea adventure mockumentary, and making stuff up and putting it into categories that caused pleasant vibrations in my neurodivergent brain. i have watched so many whale documentaries after reading this, you guys have no idea🐳

2. Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2023? flamefall is the second book in the aurelian cycle and it’s the best sequel i’ve read so far this year. the addition of a slow burn mm master/servant story line improved things considerably, not to mention that it was my favorite character’s time to shine. this series is sooo good, please read it guys you won’t regret it i swear🙏

(ngl i’m a bit annoyed that fourth wing, this fireborne sjm-ified, is doing numbers out there and meanwhile there’s no fandom for the aurelian cycle to speak of😒)

also i simply have to mention defekt, book two of litenverse. i found the first book quite boring despite it’s shortness but the sequel has a sad lil guy🥺. highly recommend for fans of black mirror, severance or the murderbot diaries. you don’t reeeally need to read book one btw, i think you can just read the description and then jump straight to the good stuff

3. New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To? i want to read witch king but i keep putting it off cause everything i hear about it sounds suspiciously like *american author does mdzs* and idk how i feel about that😬

4. Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2023? i’m looking forward to system collapse the most bc it’s gonna be set chronologically after network effect and it’s longer than the other murderbot novellas too. very excited to see murderbot and art bicker again hehe

5. Biggest Disappointment? ig it’s the warrior’s apprentice😬 many people recced the vorkosigan saga to me as “the lymond chronicles in space” but based just on this first(-ish) book i have to say miles is uhhh,, not lymond😐 lymond’s key traits are that he’s queer and a cunt and baby miles is simply not that (yet). of all the other books that people mentioned on my overcompetent scheming bastard post this was the last one i hadn’t read so i was a bit disappointed that it didn’t pull me in like the lymond chronicles. however, of all the books mentioned there it’s also the only series i can see myself continuing any time soon so. it wasn’t all too bad ig🤷‍♀️

i was also somewhat disappointed by assassin’s apprentice but i will make myself push through the realm of the elderlings just bc i’m so intrigued by the fool👀

6. Biggest Surprise? apart from the life changing experience that was moby dick i gotta admit i didn’t expect to like the goblin emperor, what with it being one of those cozy hopepunk fantasies where people are nice and decent to each other🙄 but it really did grow on me by the end, it indeed made me feel cozy and soothed. now i wanna try katherine addison’s older darker stuff that was apparently so controversial she had to change her pen name or smth👀🤭  

7. Favorite New Author? so i read another book by christopher rice and can confirm that he’s now one of my favorite authors. the man’s early 2000s gay thrillers are very melodramatic and refreshingly juicy - you can really tell they were published in ye olden pre-twitter times

8. Newest Favorite Character? cyrano savinien hercule de bergerac. after just reading that first act where he monologues about his nose for three pages straight and then spends all the money he has to hijack a theater and cause a scene by duelling a guy on stage while insulting him in ballad form i thought wow but this is one of my sexy fucked up guys who like to swish their swords and run their mouths! please enter the mind rotation chamber, monsieur🙌

Newest Fictional Crush? power sur eater🐉 you guys are sleeping on the aurelian cycle and on the Glory and Tragedy of My Boy who has done nothing wrong ever in his life and i love him😭 seriously, if you’d like to watch a character like draco malfoy go through jaime lannister’s arc you gotta read this series

💕Best Ship💕 the relationship of griff and delo in the aurelian cycle was SO dramatic and full of rawest scenes! kinda reminded me of captive prince at times, bc of the whole master/servant element. and the ending? “i will grow old in love, let them sing of others”?? i am Emotion🥺

10. Book That Made You Cry? furysong made me cry my eyes out like every ending to a ya series should. have i mentioned you should read the aurelian cycle btw? but also both moby dick and cyrano de bergerac made me laugh AND cry as only really good books do. there’s a part in moby dick about seeing whales in mountains and stars that made me remember i am a human being and was a small and happy human being once - like that scene in ratatouille when anton ego tastes ratatouille and the nostalgic memories hit him and he becomes not evil anymore. that was nice but i cried like a little bitch😭

11. Book That Made You Happy? re-reading twittering birds never fly without skipping all the yakuza plot scenes made me realize how hilarious this manga actually is! yashiro can obviously crack a joke but this time i discovered the comic relief goldmine that is nanahara

Most Beautiful Cover? the og red cover of fireborne slaps! the revolutionary red? the minimalist black dragon? the main characters’ profiles formed by its wings?? talented brilliant show stopping. idk who made the decision to redesign the covers after the first book but that decision was utterly stupid🤨

15. What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year? i need to finish some series (the diviners, the dreamhealers, the broken earth), then like i said i want to read witch king and also i’m doing the classics challenge again so i have to at least finish reading roxelana and re-read the picture of dorian gray (the uncensored edition👀). i have looked up my old mid year tags and was pleased to discover that i since have managed to read all the books mentioned there EXCEPT for you love me which has been a staple in my reading plans since 2021 so i’m gonna put it on this list again to honor the tradition lmao

overall i have to say my reading year is going well but i still miss the exhilaration of discovering new books worth obsessing over like it kept happening in 2019-2021 with the secret history, captive prince, all for the game, mdzs and lymond. last year i used to think i wasn’t doing a good job of finding books like this but now i’m starting to suspect that i have actually read ALL the good books and there aren’t any left :( but that’s absurd right?? or isn’t it?! anyways tell me what you’ve been reading so that i can maybe get intrigued by something and prove myself wrong on this🙏📚

My favorite thing about Power is that he doesn't let anyone tame his asshole ways. Like yes he has growth, however he is still a bit of a jerk at heart. And this is important in book 3, because NO ONE ELSE could have done what he did. Literally no other Guardian was going to be able to blend in with the Ixion squad the way Power was able to. He's an asshole and he uses that to his full advantage. Like who else was going to be able to play the role? Lee? Are you kidding??? Power gave that 1000% commitment and then some, and we thank him for that.

Also we don't get his POV but he's a very smart character. I think he knew the second Ixion took control that he was the only one who was going to be able to play along convincingly enough to be useful. Like he immediately took the initiative and started making a plan. No existential or philosophical crisis getting in the way of this man getting things DONE. It's a great example of seeing a jerk character have development and growth without changing their core personality traits and behaviors.

In conclusion you may hate Power for being a jerk in book 1, but just wait, it's a secret weapon to use for later.

Thanks for the ask Anon! I always love to ramble about my OCs and our favourite greasy boi.

This might be unnecessarily long-winded but I have the perpetual inability to be brief and to not overthink everything and your question touches on one of those tiny details™ you know nobody will really pick up on and they don’t exactly matter for the plot either but really help me as an author flesh out a character further and make them feel more alive.

Funnily enough I have Snape a tad obsessed with both Freya’s perfume in A Servant of Death and Dove’s in “Your tears are of no relevance to me”. I guess it goes back to my headcanon of Snape as someone very sensitive to scents so it’s only natural he would pick up on their perfumes.

Freya uses a cherry blossom perfume. It’s mentioned in Chapter 31 ‘Heaven’! 

Cherry blossoms stand for life and death, beauty and violence. They symbolise a time of renewal. If you’ve already finished Part I of A Servant of Death I’m sure you’ll get what it references in connection with Freya 😏.

I am by no means knowledgeable about fragrances but I picture it as a very light, sweet flowery scent.

Dove’s perfume would be something flowery as well, perhaps a bit more mature compared to Freya’s very sweet perfume. Very feminine. Maybe something like ‘Garden Party’ from Yves Rocher, a damask rose and mint scent (though I can’t pick out the mint, it’s like a tad more of a tangy rose scent) or going with the more mature scent I could see her choose something like ‘Sur La Lande’ (I’m really outing my love for Yves Rocher here lol). It’s a chamomile and jasmine scent.

Now to stray from your question a bit (please bear with me - it makes sense eventually (I think)):

Freya and Dove both grew up in a similar environment. Both are born into one of the Sacred Twenty-eight, those ‘truly pure’ wizarding families. Both have learnt the same old, misogynistic and rigid idea of what femininity is and how a woman has to behave, her role within the family and society.

They learnt to be pleasant and sweet, to not voice their opinions, to take on the burdens of men and make them feel better, to ignore their own needs and serve their families without asking questions but while Freya rejects those ideas, Dove is utterly at their mercy. She has very little outside influences that could even suggest to her that what she learnt is wrong. 

Freya is very open-minded in her own way. She is an internationally known activist, she is the head of her family, she is a girl who has repeatedly been told there is no spot for her on the table and instead of keeping her head down like Dove she kicked the door down and demanded they make space for her or they’ll regret it. Freya has opportunities and power and connections where Dove has been isolated and oppressed her entire life with no way of escaping until Snape. 

Freya has learnt through trial and error and through the women in her life (Clémentine, Luise, her grandmother, Narcissa, all the other wives of Death Eaters, Daphne), to weaponize that idea of femininity. Freya needs to keep her secret, that is her biggest objective throughout her life and it fuels most of her actions. She is not above breaking the law, causing harm to others or manipulating them to achieve that. 

Freya knows it is of advantage to be underestimated. She also knows she has to represent her family. It’s important to conceal the broken relationship with her father because her family has to appear strong. As head of the family she has to, in the public eye, fit into that picture of what a pureblood woman is. 

She is very conscious of what she wears around certain people. She spends a good amount of time on choosing the right clothes to convey what she wants to convey. She nurtures her connections on the many galas, functions and balls she attends.

Her perfume, sweet and innocent, might contradict her rather brisk personality, with her sarcasm and lies and her willingness to do whatever it takes. Part of it is intentional. Men underestimate her and that’s what she wants. She wants them to lower their guard around her and never look too closely at what she’s actually doing. Her perfume is just one more puzzle piece in the public persona ‘Freya Selwyn’ she has created.

Another part of it is, Freya longs for what she has lost and she is eternally doomed to mourn that loss. She can’t get back what she has lost, she can’t be a ‘normal’ girl, she has to be manipulative and calculated and she has to keep her distance from people without letting them notice.

An action as simple as her cherry blossom perfume, her lavender and vanilla soap - it’s a little piece of the life she has lost that she is reclaiming for herself.

Dove is indoctrinated. She is blind to the realities of Voldemort and the Death Eaters and the different ways women live around the world. A woman choosing a career to her father is a betrayal to all wizardkind. Women’s only job is to bring their husbands pleasure, birth children and to be easy on the eyes. Maybe act as a buffer in a difficult social situation. Smooth over the rough edges of a joke that offended or ease the uncomfortable atmosphere created by a man pushing too far during a casual negotiation over a glass of whisky and a cigar.

In one scene in your tears Snape criticises the sheer endless row of products in her shower, it’s another small detail™ but it shows how much focus has been put on her beauty throughout her life. So every dress she owns, every bit of cosmetic, her jewellery - it all has been chosen for her to represent the family in a way her father agrees with and makes her attractive to suitors.

Dove's perfume is an extension of that. While Freya’s perfume contradicts her and serves to help Freya, Dove’s is meant to tie the entire picture of her father’s perfect, desirable but chaste oldest daughter together, ultimately working against her as it further weighs her down into the life chosen for her.

Both have learned to weaponize their femininity in their own way, to wear make-up like armour and use sweet smiles and pretty scents to hide the dirty secrets of their families. Freya to save and protect herself and Dove by slowly destroying herself for everybody else's sake.

Harrie…well Harrie wouldn’t wear perfume. She has no meaningful relationships with any adult woman who could have been a role model to her due to her upbringing. She is exploring her feminine side a little in Carrying Atlas, but perfumes are just not something she would think about unless prompted to. Perhaps by Candy and Millie. 

She’d have some very fruity shower gel though. Raspberry-scented maybe. Or peach. Because she liked the packaging. Maybe it’s even one of those fun children’s 3 in 1 soaps with glitter and cute packaging, maybe even a foam bath soap because she’d always see them as a kid but would have never been allowed to have them.

If she was outside flying or tending the garden she’d smell of fresh earth and grass and whatever sweet treat she sneakily ate behind Snape’s back to avoid a lecture on healthy eating habits.

Snape in my fics smells like parchment, leather and something herbal, it’s a nod towards him probably always being bent over some cauldron. Sometimes bergamot or sandalwood. In general though: the man doesn’t do scents. 

As I said he’s sensitive to smells. Potioneers in my fics, at least those that Snape would consider worthy of the name, reject all scents in their labs. Scents of any kind, strong cleaning solutions, perfume, soap, it messes with your senses and could end up preventing you from smelling whether an ingredient is still usable or has suffered due to a poor preservation spell or if that bubbling cauldron is done or not. For the more complex and sensitive potions the slightest imbalance in the brewing enviornment could ruin the entire batch.

The man makes his own soap! Without scent. He is almost neurotic in his strict rules around all things brewing. Freya understands, Dove hasn’t seen that side of him yet and Harrie….Harrie would probably end up forever banned from his lab for criticising him jokingly and accidentally offending him with that. 

Snape would sneer at the bunch of teenagers flooding into his classroom, covered in the scents of deodorants and perfumes and sweat, wondering how they can expect to ever finish a potion successfully!

Lucius gifted him some very expensive aftershave for his birthday once. He hasn’t even taken it out of the box yet. He never uses it. With a bit of convincing he can be persuaded to use it when going out to dinner with his partner but more often than not they’d fail.

With Amortentia I always struggle. The things that they find most attractive is just very difficult for me to grasp. For Freya and Snape - that’ll come! It’s a future plot point in part II of A Servant of Death so I’m not going to spoil that here.

Snape and Dove…I think they’d smell pretty similar things. Parchment and leather, perhaps. They kinda bonded over Snape’s book collection and her passion for bookbinding. They both value knowledge and agree on the importance of books - both of them had very restricted access to books in their youth are now that they can indulge in them as much as possible. Dove would smell pancakes. Snape’s love for their chosen daughters is very attractive to her and she is always reminded of finding Snape with a sick Lilian on the sofa who gets up to make Amelia pancakes for breakfast despite not having slept all night.

Perhaps Snape would smell something flowery. Her perfume was the first he noticed about her, it’s the epitome of her beauty, innocence and strength in his eyes.

Harry smells canonally smells treacle tart, the woody scent of broomstick handle, and "something flowery”. For Harrie in Carrying Atlas I’d drop the ‘something flowery’ for either strawberry (😏) or leather. Something Snape. Maybe herbs. Something like that. Something she smelt at Prince Manor.
