Foolish as it might be in this environment, the idea of leaving most things behind to start this venture has been liberating and frightening. More than anything, I really hate dev blogging... its like trying to explain yourself and validate your actions to others. For me, it feels like I am back to teaching univertiy again, repeating the same lecture over and over again.... hoping some of the lessons will stick. Yet in the not too far recesses of my mind, there is that thrill of sharing the knowledge of narrative, art process, problem solving, and knowing how to propery body slam a computer.

Sharing over 20 years of game experience in AAA companies to young bright eyed and busy taled kids was wonderful, but after eleven years of that working vacation, its time to get back to my own needs... those creative needs, but this time.. trying to blow wind into my own sails....

so, for now, a little inspirational music, and a simple "Hello World"

FINALLY! Townsend's newest album, only a couple months old, Powernerd from October 2024. I've waited to hear this for the first time since I started relistening to Townsend's discography.

The album immediately opens with the energetic title song, Powernerd. And it's an interesting sound! This is more hard rock than heavy metal from what I can hear. It's a fun banger.

By Knuckledragger, I figure that the vibe on this album is... a little more tangible than I've gotten used to from Townsend. Like, it's easier to listen to, you know? I don't know how to describe it. It's less Tool and more... I don't want to say "mainstream palatable", but it's the closest thing I can think of. It's still heavy metal/hard rock with screamed vocals and abrasive lyrics, but it's easier to grasp and comprehend than, say, Puzzle. It's an interesting direction from Townsend and I like it!

Gratitude brings it back to the traditional Townsend sound, though. It's big, it's epic, it blows you over like a strong gust of wind. Incredible track.

Jainism is another track that I want to highlight because it's easily the best song on the album and the reason why I've been so excited for this album. The sing-along-able chorus and thought-provoking lyrics are so good and the punchy "this is so much larger" line before the chorus is so headbangable. This song has been stuck in my head off-and-on for a couple of weeks now and I couldn't be happier. Jainism is easily one of the best metal songs of 2024, which is a feat because Gojira's Mea Culpa and Bloodywood and BABYMETAL's Bekhauf also came out this year.

Glacier is another incredible track that continues the traditional Townsend sound. I stand wildly corrected in assuming that this album would be all hard rock.

The closing track of the album, Ruby Quaker, is a fun romp about drinking coffee. I don't have much else to say about it, it's just so much fun with lighthearted lyrics.

This is an incredible album and it was well worth the self-imposed wait. While I might not come back to it like I would come back to, say Epicloud or other of my fave albums, I will continue to listen to Jainism for a long time.

Myles Kennedy, Devin Townsend

Dec 3, 2024 - O2 Forum Kentish Town (London)

London never disappoints and this time it even treated us with some sunny weather in December, who knew? After visiting a friend outside of town, we stayed near Kentish Town, which was convenient, since that tube station was closed. We could walk to the venue on the day of the show!

I was very excited about this show, since I’m a fan of both Myles and Dev. Myles was stopping in Berlin on this tour too, but without Devin, so it was a no brainer to go see them both in London.

By 7 PM, the line was already massive, stretching all the way to a back alley. While waiting, we caught a glimpse of Dev warming up through a window - he would walk left to right repeatedly, with hands resting on his head.

Later on, Dev opened his set with a loud burp, followed by Let It Roll. 😅 Although we saw some Devy fans out there, most people seemed to be there for Myles, so they probably weren’t sure what to make of this. Dev himself acknowledged that this is probably not his crowd, but he still went all in with being his chaotic, if not cranky, self. 

A woman nearby got startled every time he would abruptly scream. He played Ih-Ah, Deadhead, and Life, but no new stuff from Powernerd yet. His set was very short but I hope he got at least some new fans.

Myles was a pure ray of sunshine, and seemed more happy and engaged than in any Berlin show we saw him at. The crowd responded to him with way more energy as well. He wore a Zeal and Ardor shirt - who knows, maybe his next album is going to be more metal. 

His new album The Art Of Letting Go meant he would deliver some perfect solos. Myles revealed once again that at the core, he's a passionate guitar nerd. His nice, new, electric arrangements of the songs from the Year of the Tiger were an absolute blast. Also, his great respect for Dev warms my heart.

Rating: 9/10 Dev can do it better, but my heart is full. <3
