How do you think the V3 cast would feel about their pregame selves if they were in the same room with them? (mainly Shuichi because at the least the fans gave him a personality. Like...I don't know if it's canon, but it's something to work with)

I know pretty much nothing about the pregame characters.

Cept Kaede.

Soo... These are all my headcannons.

Kaede: Creeped out, is just like "I wouldn't say that."

I feel like Pre Kaede just teases her for being "soft and pathetic."

Mimics what she says in a high pitched squeaky voice.

Shuichi: Both just stare uncomfortably for a while.

Before Pre Shuichi, noticing Shuichi's hair, straightens up and asks if his pitch to take out Kaede worked.

Shuichi, horrified shoots all that down that he would never.

Pre Shuichi just rolls his eyes like "God your lame, it's just a game man. And now, I'm the star of it."

Shuichi just slowly shakes his head and leaves to find his friends.

Kaito: Pre game Kaito is cocky, loud and even more boisterous than Kaito.

Keeps asking what their earnings are but Kaito doesn't know what he's saying.

It's a bit off putting but they appear to get along.

Kokichi: Pre game Kokichi is a nerd about the show.

Kokichi is slowly getting answers out of his more serious counterpart.

Both keep talking about how cool Monokuma is...

And everyone's thinking of ways to seperate em.

Kirumi: Pre game Kirumi just kinda looks at Kirumi like dirt. Just ugh they made me the maid?

Kirumi smiled politely... And murderously.

Gonta: Both cinnamon rolls, both gentleman.

Pre is more articulate but they are both bonding.

It's adorable.

Miu: The opposite of Kaede, Pre Miu is a sweetheart so she's getting teased by Miu for being "a soft prude with no tits."

Keebo likes her well enough, to Miu's annoyance.

Angie: Pre just looks at Angie in annoyance like "... I made one mention of my god and they made it my whole personality...."

.

Korekiyo: Pre instantly quizzes him on various topics in anthropology.

Just to make sure he's as smart as him.

They have fun with it...than Korekiyo mentions sister and Pre looks at him all werid.

"I don't have a sister..."

Awkward.

Tenko: Pre takes one look at her and just walks away.

Mumbling about needing to have some words with the development team... Because what is that?

Himiko: Himiko just takes a nap and Pre just nods, mood and takes a nap as well.

Rantaro: Both get on pretty well.

Rantaro makes the mistake of asking why Pre would do this...more than once.

"For my family man, they're all watching me follow my dreams."

And Rantaro is both aw but also... Tf kind of dreams u having boy?

Keebo: Keebo was excited to meet his Pre self but... He's very rudemantary.

Can't really say much other than a few phrases so... Its just a bit awkward.

Maki: Pre Maki finds Kaito annoying and hates the whole romance plot shoved in.

Just rants about it but she's happy they let her be a kick ass assassin "and not some dumb child carer."

Maki is just silently listening, couldn't get a word in even if she tried.

Is pissed about the not liking Kaito thing.

Ryoma: Just silently vibe with each other.

Tsumugi: Both squeal when they see each other.

Clasping hands and whispering details, just all excited and secretive.

"Wait don't tell me, you're gonna write unheard lines.

"You know it!"

Pre is very happy with Tsumugi, and the more extroverted of the duo.

Both are just fangirling each other.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share some of my concept art for pregame/post game casual outfits for the DRV3 cast + some sprite edits!

Commentary under the cut! (it went on for so much longer than I expected...)

Tenko's concept was "stylish", since she looks so so cool in her blazer + cardigan pregame school uniform! Part of in-game Tenko's actual design concept was the keyword "unfashionable", so I wanted to subvert that with her pregame concept. My iteration of pregame Tenko is a huge people person who's best friends with virtually everyone at her school, so I think her more fashionable friends picked out this outfit for her! Of course, she's still wearing the cutesy blue bobble hair ties that she has in her pregame school uniform; I imagine that's an accessory she chose for herself, so she and her in-game counterpart aren't so different in that regard.

Kaede's pregame concept was drawn from the face her headshot makes in her early design concepts: a cool, determined face with a sidelong stare. Playing off of some fandom interpretations a bit, I gave my design the keywords "looks like a delinquent". More incidentally than completely purposefully, I took some inspiration from kogyaru fashion with the loose socks and short skirt (pregame Kaede's design notes actually point out the short skirt in the uniform, so I thought to interpret it as Kaede's personal choice). I also decided to keep the music note hairpins, even though they only appear in ONE of her pregame sprites (and nowhere else in the pregame + flashbacks)... they were also pointed out in the artbook, okay. The red ribbon on her arm is the tie of her sailor uniform.

Shuichi's pregame concept stems from my headcanon that he actually attends a school with no dress code. The nice blazer he wears in the pregame? Completely a personal choice. It's why he gets away with wearing the hat. So of course, outside of school, he still wears a blazer. It's not supposed to be the same one, just a more "casual" one from the same brand. Look, he's... wearing a sweater underneath the blazer, that means it's casual, right? (the sweater is probably 15,000 yen. there is a nice dress shirt underneath it.)

Angie was designed with the keyword of "studious". She has a prim and proper look with her collared long-sleeved shirt, high socks, and her knee-length dress (okay it might kinda stop short of the knee in the art but. I usually draw it knee length now). I was so sad that they got rid of the super-cute center parted bangs in her concept art because the straight bangs were "easier to draw", so I gave her the center part she deserves. She doesn't really pick her own clothes and just wears what's given to her, but I think she actually likes the pink dress a lot.

Kirumi's concept was "something a typical little girl would wear". She ended up looking like a classic princess from a western fairy tale, which... well, it tracks. The puffed sleeves, one piece dress, and uh. the shoes. low heels? flats with heels? (I tried a search and I got "ballerina heels" so I'll call them that) the ballerina heels were definitely design elements drawn directly from the prompt. Her concept was inspired by the cute little bow on her headband in her pregame uniform... I imagine pregame Kirumi loves cute things like bows and baubles but is too shy to wear anything flashy.

Korekiyo's design is meant to be stylish as well! The artbook commentary for his pregame uniform makes note of his modern attire and how he'd probably be popular with girls, so I moved forward from there. I don't think he'd be the MOST stylish guy, at least not in his casualwear (I'd reserve that for Rantaro, I think), and he'd keep his best outfits for the best of occasions. So here he's wearing something that I feel might be a bit off-kilter from what might typically be considered stylish. Or maybe it is perfectly stylish, I dunno. I don't really know anything about fashion. What I really like is the ponytail his hair is in; part of his hair actually sits in a loop while the rest goes through normally as the ponytail.

Kokichi's full outfit is a light gray pullover hoodie with brown jeans. I wanted to keep the loose-fitting aspect of his in-game outfit and riff off of his image colours, white and black (combined into gray, plus a purple tint). His neck is still not very visible in this outfit, much like in-game and even in the pregame with his high-collared uniform. I imagine pregame Kokichi as being rather aloof and free-spirited when it comes to clothing, versus in-game Kokichi's inventive and meticulous, yet equally free-spirited "style". He has a scarf that's black on one side and white on the other, but he only wears it when it's cold out.

Keebo's outfit is very much based on his in-game design, what with the wide, tall collar and green colour scheme. He's a human here! Since his right eye is covered in the pregame uniform by his hat, I played off of the "heterochromatic V3 character" idea — but with Keebo, not Kokichi! It's not super obvious, but his right eye is green while his left eye is blue. I also gave him a smaller ahoge and his hair is more of a pale blonde than a sheer white. I'm planning to make a Dnaganronpa style design sheet for human Keebo sometime hehe

Maki's full design is a long-sleeved red sweater with a tank top underneath. Her sleeves are rolled up halfway, and she's wearing gray sweatpants with this ensemble. It's an easy-to-move in outfit that facilitates her favourite hobby: parkour! Also getting into random street fights and actually being something of a delinquent (unlike Kaede, who only looks like a delinquent). I actually took some of these design elements from a "Maki ripoff" character I designed for something V3-related quite a long while back... but that's a long story :)

Allow me to ramble about my new pregame fic.

It's what you would see in every stereotypical pregame fic, I guess, but I decided to add some humble Government Corruption.

Everyone is vastly different to what they were in the game. Different names. Different stories. None of them really know each other. They know nothing about the truth of the Popular TV Show, Danganronpa.

I thought that blaming a bunch of stupid, irresponsible teenagers for deciding to make the decision to just...die was irrealistic

AND WHERE ARE THE PARENTS???

So I thought adding a layer of complexity that puts this gory TV show apart from regular reality TV might be interesting. Everyone is going to be here, and so far I have a glimmer of a plot and 5 sad little teenagers.

Danganronpa V3 Pregame headcanons (1/2)

Shuichi Saihara

• Is a Kyoko kinnie.

• He is the reason why Maki auditioned for Danganronpa.

• He and Kaede were friends with benefits.

Maki Harukawa

• Was the class president of her class.

• She only auditioned for Danganronpa in order to protect Kokichi who Shuichi had planned to force him to auditioned.

• She often protects her fellow classmates from Kaito and Kaede’s bullying.

Himiko Yumeno

• Auditioned in a suicide pact with her best friends (Tenko & Angie).

• Grew up with an abusive father and even though she, her mother and little brother have gotten away from him, she has lost her will to live.

• Is the primary targets for bullies.

Rantaro Amami

• Along with Tsumugi, he was one of the two survivors from the previous killing game.

• Used to be a playboy and bully but became much kinder after surviving Danganronpa.

• Was forced to participate in the next season.

Kaede Akamatsu

• Friends with benefits with Shuichi.

• The mean girl.

• She has a social media account on Instagram which she uses to bully Kokichi to avoid facing his brother’s wrath.

• Is resented by her sister due to the fact that she is the favorite daughter of their parents.

• She and her sister is the daughters of Fuyupeko with Fuyuhiko switching names to his mother’s maiden name to distance himself from the Mafia.

Ryoma Hoshi

• Joined to commit suicide.

• Changed the least from his in-game self.

• He, Rantaro and Kaito often meet up behind the school to smoke weed.

Kirumi Tojo

• Used to attend a private school until she got expelled when she got pregnant.

• Her mother take care of her son while she was at school.

• After hearing about her parents discussing kicking her out, she decided to audition for Danganronpa to get the money to support herself and her son.

Kaede Akamatsu - A popular girl who conceals her more cynical side. Her classmates adore her for her confident and extraverted personality, and can motivate anyone to follow her strong and calm leadership. However, what people dont notice behind her level-headed fascade is that she is quite dubious and suspicious of others, often trying to find the true hidden despair humanity has so she can never be blind sighted by any harm

Shuichi Saihara - Known online as one of the most deductive arg detective, in real life, shuichi is nothing more than a danganronpa obsessed fan boy. Though a sweet albeit very awkward person, he can get a bit obssessive about talking about danganronpa, leaving non fans speechless by how much a nobody like him can talk abt the topic. He's intrigued by the thrill of murder mysteries danganronpa provides, and tries to apply said detective skills with args he finds online

Kaito Momota - The bully with a smile, Kaito has an odd reputation. Not outright aggressive, but definitely your average jock kind of character who would get violent if push comes to shove. But usually, he gives off a laid back attitude around his friends, which somehow makes him more formidable somehow with how confident he is. But behind the manly exterior, Kaito secretly wishes to find a true passion in life, fearing he is doomed to be nothing more than a high school has-been

Rantaro Amami - Returning after his successful run of season 52, Rantaro is a world wide celebrity for his heroic sacrafice in the final trial. But, he has no recollection of it, nor does he want to see any of the footage of the game. He is far more drained, tired of the constant media attention following him and talking about events he cannot even remember. Compared to his considerate pre-52 self, Rantaro is determined to stay alive and while he preached hope on tv, he has lost faith in others and acts like an aloof celebrity behind his dry smile

Maki Harukawa - Maki is a cool-headed girl, very unlike her aggressive in game self. nothing much can phase her, and while she has a calm smile, maki is truly seeking out her next thrill that can actually make her truly feel alive. As such, maki is quite atheltic, working out and very active in the school tennis club

Himiko Yumeno - Even by pg shuichi standards, himiko is quiet. Most take her for as mute since outside of the occassional peep, himiko refuses to talk. Himiko doesn't want to let others in, scared that others can hurt her, and she tries her best to stay in the sidelines and not draw attention to herself. She has a low opinion of herself, and she is just hoping that someone can be the one to reach out to her first

Angie Yonaga - The student activist of the school and class president known as a buzzkill, those outside her inner circle don’t tend to like Angie for her outspoken opinions on a variety of topics. Due to her religious values, she personally finds the idea of Danganronpa detestable, choosing to go to the interview in order to personally confront its creators and demand it be shut down. But to clarify angie doesn't believe her religous beliefs are above others, she simply wants to create a more peaceful world and has dreams of helping everyone

Gonta Gokuhara - Heir of the wealthy Gokuhara bloodline, Gonta has a lot of expectations placed onto him, and as such, he too has high expectations of the people around him as well. Composed and somewhat stoic, he is typically found reading a book in the courtyard, studying, or working out. He is a man of strict schedule imposed by his family, and as such, many find it best to ignore him. He is very perfectionistic and can be quick to criticize other. But in truth, little see how much Gonta applies those standards to himself, never believing himself to be enough for his prestigious family. In truth, Gonta is intimidated by others and feels himself not worthy to speak with them.

Kirumi Tojo - Kirumi Tojo is poor, but her suck-up and stuck-up attitude sure makes it hrd to have such an impression. Top of her grade in terms of academic test scores, Kirumi pushes herself to rise above her low family income to pursue greater things. She works incredibly hard and dedicates herself greatly to give the appearance of a refined student and student council vice president, growing an ego that she will rise above her class. Though well liked by teachers, some people can find her a tad egotistical underneath her high class demeanor. Her constant comparisons with others can be especially grating. 

Kokichi Oma - A quiet class representative, Kokichi Oma does a lot to help his class out however he can. Through his wide smiles and numerous good deeds, he is often in charge of a lot of responsibilities, almost to his detriment. Never one for confrontation, he hides himself behind lies to appear more likable and helpful than he is: A classic person pleaser to the highest degree. But he’s not stupid, aware that he is often used, but he can’t push himself to say no to any requests. Behind all his non-judgemental words, he tries to suppress his more joke-ish attitude, sometimes seen stifling an immature laugh to himself. 

Korekiyo Shinguji - Kind, studious, but reserved, Korekiyo has many walls up, especially with the fact that nobody has seen the second half of his face. Whispers surround the boy, all of which point to a headline from years ago of an unfortunate tragedy occurring with the death of an upcoming idol that shared the surname of shinguji. Many are convinced Korekiyo is the girl’s younger brother, but without being able to see half of his face and usually hiding behind his hair, there can be no confirmation. But when confronted with such rumors, Korekiyo’s usual collected attitude sours, and he would excuse himself. He appears to be haunted from a ghost of his past. 

Miu Iruma - “The blonde, bimbo chick” is what most think when the name, Miu Iruma, is brought up. Popular and surrounded by numerous shallow friends, Iruma is known for her feisty, playful attitude, especially around the boys. But deep down, her aggression stems from her own perceived inferiority, despising that everybody assumes her as stupid and objectify her. It frustrates her to no end that she can’t be seen for anything past her looks, but with her fake friends surrounding her, she doesn’t feel like she can make such an odd complaint to anyone. More than anything, she wish she was spoken to, rather than treated as a joke. 

Tenko Chabashira - Energetic and hyper, Tenko is sort of a weird one, always chattering about her latest obsession eagerly. She is not as popular as Miu or Kaede nor is she as smart as Kirumi, but she is just a girl with her own passions who wants to hang out with her friends with similar interests. She adores girl idol groups and devours discussion threads and Twitter posts, and just wants to nerd out about it.

Ryoma Hoshi - A delinquent with not a lot going for him, Hoshi is isolated from others with his jaded attitude. As they say, he’s been on the wrong side of the tracks, and usually doesn’t show up to class, typically skipping or found loitering on school grounds. Not many people give him a chance, his reputation exceeding him but he doesn’t seem to mind it. But, when you get to know him, he shows to give good advice and likes any company he can crack a good joke with.

Keebo - Keebo is created by Team Danganronpa and doesn't know about much of life outside of that. He is only loyal and can obey what he is told to do.

Tsumugi Shirogane - A stressed out DR writer in dire who finally has managed to score the role as lead producer for the latest season after her success with season 52. She is dedicated to her job both as a part of its creation but also as a fan, belieivng that her sole purpose is to continue the danganronpa legacy.

If I could rewrite the v3 ending I would scrap the whole "danganronpa is a real game in this universe" thing and instead it would be like: the characters were a bunch of talentless people who worshipped junko, and they implanted false memories and personalities into themselves and put themselves in a killing game. Cus they wanted to make another killing game, and the most despair inducing thing to do would be to do it to themselves. This way we can keep the existential horror of your entire life being made up, and the theme of "what defines truth and lies" while also getting rid of that stupid "you're fictional characters in a show" plot point

i like that idea. honestly, there's a million things they could have done with the plot of V3. i don't hate bits and pieces of it, but my current opinion (it may change) is that this was the most Boring Use of the twist/parts of Tsumugi's "story."

just off the top of my head, i'd rather have seen:

a DR game that doesn't seem like it's about SHSLs (their pregame selves) until halfway thru when it's revealed they're mindwiped SHSLs in hiding

as an addendum to the above, an actual Ultimate Hunt plot

the Gofer Project without any extraneous bits: it could still be an AU, but show us the potential "bad end" of Makoto restarting HPA in DR3. like, a Danganronpa 4 IF, essentially. it would have been about as Stupid but i think there could have been something Interesting to say there as an unofficial "what if"

fuck it, DR in space

Tsumugi's stupid reality show plot is real but the reveal is much earlier and the plot is much more about fighting Nihilism

a plot that takes place in this apparently insane world outside of the Killing Game where you can just project new identities onto people, it's legal to give folks Space COVID, and you can let them die for Entertainment (UDG-like spinoff, or, hell, not a DR game at all - could have been the next MDA/Rain Code)

a spinoff-type game in the world of DR with literally any of these characters' backstories? like? Rantaro, Kirumi, Kokichi, Korekiyo, they're all ripe as little bananas to just slot into HPA-arc post-DR3

if they really want to go the Reality Show route, go full meta with it early. it's not a reveal, it's fully known to the viewer from the start. you're the producer. everything is measured in Ratings and Engagement and Viewership. and you have to weigh that against the fact that these kids are in fact totally dying on you

etc etc

not all at once, of course, since some of these are Mutually Exclusive. but you get what i mean.

overall, my first impression (having just beat it a few days ago) is that the Moving Parts are not necessarily bad. a lot of them are really interesting, in fact! but they put them together in a way that doesn't really do much for me at the moment
