Theory: Rantaro’s sisters might actually be a metaphor for the people who were killed in his killing game. So let's assume Rantaro really did partake in a previous killing game. When he got to star in the next season, Team Danganronpa gave him a new character that involves traveling the world in search for his sisters. It’s likely that, outside the Danganronpa universe, after his previous game, Rantaro was in denial that his friends were all killed and wanted to believe they were still alive somehow.

Rantaro states that he has 12 sisters. That would be an equivalent number to how many people are killed in Danganronpa, meaning that 4 people, including Rantaro, survived in Danganronpa 52. And it’s stated in the final trial that Rantaro sacrificed himself so that the other survivors of his killing game would live, but it meant that he had to star in the next season, that was his punishment.

Rantaro’s character may have been different in Danganronpa 52. He could’ve been the Ultimate Adventurer, or something else, but definitely not the Ultimate Survivor. Once his killing game was over, Pregame Rantaro probably wanted to travel around the real world thinking that Team Danganronpa had hidden his friends somehow. But once they kidnapped him again, they altered his memories by making him forget about his previous killing game and give him this Ultimate Adventurer character that involves him saying he traveled the world to find his lost sisters, but in actuality, he wanted to find his friends that were killed.

Why would his character have been different in Danganronpa 52? Odds are, Danganronpa 4 through 52 had stories that were in no way related to Hope’s Peak Academy or even the Ultimate Hunt. In the last trial, it’s stated that they gave them the Flashback Light about Hope’s Peak so that they could have the hope to stop Kokichi, since the Flashback Lights are made by selecting what kinds of fake memories to use.

Also, at the beginning of the game, Rantaro is the most calm and cautious out of everyone when the Exisals appeared. In his FTEs, he states that he’s been in life-threatening situations when traveling the world. It could be more likely that he was so calm about the new killing game because of his experience in whatever kind of killing game he and his “sisters” starred in. Because everyone’s pregame selves act the same as they do in-game, Pregame Rantaro probably had an idea as to why he was kidnapped, but once his memories were altered, Team Danganronpa decided to make Rantaro’s new character a homage to what his life was like after Danganronpa 52.

Pre-game v3 headcanons

Apollo: Confession: I have no fucking clue where the names Kage and Bon for pregame Shuichi and Kokichi came from. I know Kage means Shadow (or something) but Bon? I have no fucking clue

Checkers: Bon is plain, I think I’ve seen it written as 凡吉

Hina: Ima be real, I thought Bon had something to do with bunnies. Also for Pregame, I've always liked the headcanon that their in-game personalities are just exaggerated versions of their Pregame selves. It's like, you can't implement a personality that's not already there to some extent, if they could make anyone anything, why do auditions the way they do? I mean, it's not like they remember the promises they made during them, heck, Shuichi actively broke his promise to be an ultimate detective who creates a gruesome murder So to me, I prefer the headcanon that they took their existing personalities and amplified parts of them, created caricatures out of what they already are.

Which Danganronpa do you think got dealt the worst by Localization?

I'd be lying if I didn't say Gonta. (though Angie's god changing from being a generic god, making her a mockery of religious folk, to Atua, a very specific god that real people actually worship, has some fucked up, arguably kinda racist implications.)

A small CW for discussing the R slur in this analysis/rant. I don't write it out, but I understand 100% if you don't want to read it.

Speaking in the third person is considered a cute quirk in Japan. When a Japanese author has a character speak in third person, they are usually trying to make the character appear cute and harmless, which absolutely fits Gonta.

However, most American (or culturally American) authors reserve that kind of third person talk is reserved either for cavemen, or neurodivergent characters, with the implication that the character in question is too dumb to have a proper grasp of English. (Abelism much?)

This fits everyone else's perception of Gonta, but not who he actually is as a character.

One of the main points of Ch4 is that the class (even characters Kodaka wants you to like, such as Kaito and Himiko) was wrong to treat Gonta like he was stupid, and that Kokichi, who you aren't meant to like (as a person. As an antagonist he does a decent job) at this point, was in the right. With the big twist of Ch6 coming up, in addition to the Ch5 reveal that people like Kaito and Kokichi can work together to a common goal, it's important to point out that your cast isn't as perfect or infallible as they appear.

Which is why it does such a disservice to have Gonta continue to speak in the third person in the English version.

Gonta isn't the first character to speak in the third person in Danganronpa, Ibuki does it too! But it doesn't affect Ibuki's characterization in the same way, since Ibuki's character isn't about wrongly being underestimated. If Ibuki comes across as slightly dumber, it isn't a disservice to the themes of the story.

Also, Ibuki's backstory doesn't evoke Cavemen in the western player's mind.

Some other changes around Gonta were made, notably that Miu does not actually say the R slur to him. The word is a step up from 'baka' in rudeness, so "moron" or "fucking idiot" would be closer to the original tone. Miu calls many people idiots, with Kaito and Kaede being the first to mind. Only Gonta gets the ableist slur treatment -_- (Which makes the fact that it was put in there even more heartbreaking for me.)

Even if you aren't meant to agree with Miu, this can subtly color your perceptions of Gonta. Also, Miu gets a lot of hate for this, which doesn't seem fair to me. Stan Miu.

The most infuriating thing about this is, there's another v3 character that speaks in the third person in Japanese. My queen, Tenko Chabashira. They changed how she referred to herself for the western audiences, when arguably keeping it the same would not have done her that much of a disservice to her character. (She's a comic relief character who says dumb shit. Having her seem a bit less cute and a bit more stupid to western audiences wouldn't affect her plotline that much. Some people would maybe get irrationally angry and say she's a strawman (or strawwoman! sorry Tenko.) for feminists, but Kiibo is right there.)

So the argument that the translators would have to put a lot of work in doesn't hold.

In order to adapt Gonta more accurately and have him seem cute like Kodaka intended, I propose that he has emoticons at the end of his sentences sometimes. (I am shot by a sniper rifle for this idea!)

Heres his canon first line (not counting pregame because fuck that)

"Oh! Sorry for scaring! Gonta scary-looking. Most people not wanna talk to Gonta when meeting for first time. So, like gentleman, Gonta say thank you! Thank you for talking to Gonta!"

and here's it with how I'd alter it.

"Oh! Sorry for scaring! I'm scary-looking. Most people not wanna talk to me when meeting for first time. :( So, like gentleman, I say thank you! Thank you for talking to Me! :)"

Like, he comes across different, huh? Even to my eye, it reads more like he's struggling with the language in the second one, while the first one not so much.

Kaito and the Saiouma ship actually benefit from the localization, but that is another topic for another day.

Fic idea that I think would be really heartbreaking: you know those theories on how the artificial memories of the V3 kids are based on their pregame memories they’ve just been altered? Like Maki is actually from an orphanage, Shuichi actually lived with his uncle, Kaito was raised by his grandparents ect?

What if the members of DICE are based on people pregame Kokichi knew/ was friends with? And then he meets one of them & it’s really sad & awkward because they are the person Kokichi remembers & Kokichi is the person they remember... there’s lots of angst potential there

Things I Wanted to Include for My V3 Rewrite - Part 10

So because the Gofer Project is not included in my fanfic, I needed to find a way for everyone to overcome the despair of learning the truth, that they used to be ordinary people but became fictional characters for the sake of entertainment.

The scene I had in mind was that Maki takes everyone (i.e. My OC, Kaede, Ryoma and Tenko) to the room that makes the Flashback Lights and explains how they’re made.

Maki then tells them that there’s a way to reverse engineer the Flashback Lights by restoring the user’s original memories.

Because everyone was so depressed about what Kokichi showed to everyone, Maki is the only one capable of finding the real truth that Kokichi never explained. Once they make the Flashback Light that does so...

They end up remembering the Prologue where everyone is in their pregame selves.

That was one idea. The other idea was that Maki would take everyone to the A/V Room and watch a video. The video is the Prologue where everyone is in their pregame selves. At any rate, they realize that everyone has the same names and personalities that they have, they weren’t different people when they were kidnapped. They then get an idea that their talents and hobbies are the same as they were in their pregame selves. This gives them the hope and confidence to understand that even though they’re fictional characters, they didn’t change who they were. They get an idea that Team Danganronpa really did kidnap them, alter their memories and gave them fictional backstories.

There is a twist to this. Out of everyone, my OC is not included in the recovered memory because he wasn’t present in the fake Prologue. I wrote that he was a late arrival, as in, the Monokubs made another mistake and tried to start the killing game with only 15 students. They realize that the killing game needs a 16th student and they have to kidnap another one.

You see, there’s a reason I wanted them to remember the fake Prologue. There’s a theory in the fandom that suggests that Tsumugi was lying to everyone when she said they all auditioned, because the fake Prologue clearly contradicts the audition videos. There’s also a theory that claims that Tsumugi was lying about Danganronpa turning into a TV series lasting for 53 seasons. I wanted my fanfic to try and solve the mystery about that, but it’s much bigger than that.

This is more of an overall game headcanon than a headcanon specifically for Kokichi, but bear with me.

In all killing game verses (minus ones where pregame is irrelevant), I do not take Tsumugi fully seriously. I’m willing to bend what’s true and what’s not by thread/rp partner, but there’s one thing I’m very set on: 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝.

Mostly because that’s pretty ridiculous. Implanting fake memories that would understandably alter how someone views the world but can’t completely take away who they fundamentally are? That’s my shit. Deep down, they are who they were before the killing game, but their false memories and experiences affect their beliefs, actions, and aspects of their personality.

To be clear, this also means that I believe:

nothing was actually scripted. By implanting false memories, they (Team DR/Remnants/whoever) attempted to create personalities that would fit the roles they wanted to fill, but that’s it. So, there was a concept of “protagonist,” “rival,” etc, but whether people followed their roles is up for debate

any and all romance/relationships/attachments were completely genuine because the alternative makes zero sense

although Tsumugi as well as the flashback lights/other motives were used to try to push ppl in a specific direction, once again: nothing was scripted
