Can you recommend any dinosaur themed video games? Or maybe games that just have evolution somehow play a part?
sO
for one, you can always play Evolution! evolution is a video game based on a card game that is actually a pretty great game-ification of the process of evolution (I have a couple of big critiques - predators don't hunt their prey into extinction as a general rule, but that's a key game component) and fun to play
if you're cool with going retro, the game Spore is essentially an evolution simulation game, even if its a bit oversimplified
The game Ecosystem mimics evolution too, you essentially are creating an underwater ecosystem from scratch, but my immersion is broken by the modern-type plants juxtaposed with cambrian-era fish
ironically, games with prehistoric life and games about evolution? not the same two things. none of those games really feature actual prehistoric life.
But, there are games that do!
I actually really like Saurian. It's still in alpha, and has a lot of development to do, but it's essentially a complete recreation of Hell Creek, and you can grow up as a raptor or as a triceratops!
Then there's Prehistoric Kingdom, which is a park builder sim with prehistoric life. The online community for it sucks (major transphobia incident), but the game itself is a fun time, and the dinosaurs are gorgeous.
I also enjoy Jurassic World Evolution 2. Sure, JW is inaccurate af, and every time I see manual unguals on digits 4 and 5 on the hands/front feet I scream internally, but a) there are lots of accuracy mods and b) the graphics are gorgeous
Let's Build a Zoo has prehistoric life, too! And things you wouldn't expect! It's kind of a basic game, but it's fun. And has more birds than fucking planet zoo does.
Zoo Tycoon 2 is still probably the best zoo game around, somehow, and there are tons of mods to add virtually as many prehistoric animals as you want. Hell, my friends and I made a Kulindadromeus mod for it! Literally! Any dinos you want.
Roots of Pacha is a game similar to Stardew that takes place in the Pleistocene! It's all about the power of human cooperation and community building, complete with Mammoths and Smilodon and Glyptodonts. Its a fun game, and I love it a lot. Can't wait for it to update more!
Dawn of Man is a pretty good caveman sim, as well, but it's very realism-focused, and killing mammoths is part of the game, so it's a bummer. But it's fun to go through the history of stone age human technology.
Dinosaur Fossil Hunter is... meh. the protagonist is a muscular white guy. the adventure side of paleontology is overemphasized. the controls are kind of crappy. I can't recommend it.
Tyto Ecology is a fun, if basic, ecology simulator, but it is no longer being developed or supported. Still, I enjoyed it.
aaaand... those are my recommendations. The pickings are kind of slim. Hence my desperate desire to make more prehistoric life and evolution themed games!
that said, keep an eye out - Paleopines and Super Zoo Story are both coming out soon, and they both have dinosaurs!

Your tags on that walking with dinosaurs post, about being able to forgive it's faults after seeing prehistoric planet. Was there a lot of faults with that show, too?
At the time a lot of people - academic and layfolk alike - complained that the Walking With series presented hunches and conjecture as though they were fact, and said things matter-of-factly without justifying them. Then wouldn’t you know it, Prehistoric Planet does the same thing to universal acclaim! (not talking about blatant inaccuracy like a giant Liopleurodon, that’s unforgivable, but behavioral details and fleshy reconstructions)
I know it breaks immersion and all that but I’d like there to be, y’know, some kind of justification for why they chose to show animals doing this or made them look like this.
Then again admitting that dinosaur media is mostly guesses and speculation is not the best look…

65 (2023)
"After a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills quickly discovers he's actually stranded on Earth -- 65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance at a rescue, Mills and the only other survivor, Koa, must make their way across an unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures."
A long time ago, in a galaxy not very far away, Adam Driver crashed a spaceship into prehistoric Earth. From the first trailer I wanted to see this film. It looked like an interesting take on a dinosaur movie, with some sci-fi flavour. I went into it with my expectations set at a clear level. I firmly believed I'd enjoy it, but wasn't expecting a cinematic masterpiece. I'm very happy to say that these expectations were solidly met.
The directors, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, give us as close to a real look at a prehistoric Earth as it may be possible, while still giving us an action film with some heart. The sets for the ship, and the locations for filming were great and I felt immersed in the world, for the most part.
The cinematography was definitely top notch. The dinosaur effects looked really good, at times better than the recent Jurassic World film if I'm honest. Now, I will say this, far from being a Dino expert I have to admit to only recognising a couple of the species in the film. I suspect some free rein was given to the designers of the creatures when creating them. Still it didn't detract from the movie, and some.of the monsters were genuinely quite creepy.
For the vast majority of the film this was a two-hander. Adam Driver, as Commander Mills, and Ariana Greenblatt, as Koa, give us a standard pairing of hero and rescuee. With a language barrier they struggle to communicate with each other, but over time come to a level of understanding that let's them work together. It's a trope that has been used in sci-fi so many times and, while this wasn't done badly, two immediately better versions come to mind...Enemy Mine from the 80s and Star Trek TNG episode 'Darmok'.
Ariana Greenblatt is a young actress, with a fairly solid catalogue already, most notable as the young Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War. This was a solid run as a crash survivor on a dangerous planet, who can't talk properly to her rescuer. She was better in the short scenes with Thanos, but she was far from bad here. I think we are going to see a lot from her in the coming years.
Adam Driver.......I'm not his biggest fan, but I will freely admit to not having seen a lot of his movies. What I have seen so far is an actor that fits in the mold of a lot of actors. He is himself in movies, and what you see in the films is a variation of that self. I'm not disparaging him at all. Some of the most successful actors ever have been exactly the same. What it says to me is that if Adam Driver is in a film then I'll probably really enjoy it, and surely that's got to be a good thing.
Overall it's a solid film. I came out of it feeling thoroughly satisfied. I used my monthly subscription to Odeon to buy the ticket, but I wouldn't have objected to paying for it separately. It's a film that has a decent mix of danger, heart, dinos and sci-fi, and who couldn't love that combo. There are a couple of gross out moments, so be prepared. It gets a really solid 7.5/10, and a recommendation to give it a go if you like dinos and Adam Driver.

UK Rare Fossils Find Sanctuary in New Nature Reserve
Tumblr media
In a landmark move for conservation, a picturesque corner of the English countryside abundant with geological treasures and rich biodiversity will soon gain the prestigious status of National Nature Reserve. Bradgate Park and Swithland Wood in Leicestershire are set to become the nation's 220th protected area, permanently shielding a remarkable trove of ancient fossils that offer an unparalleled window into the primordial past of our planet.
Ediacaran Marvels: A Missing Link Revealed
At the crux of this 439-hectare natural haven lie some of the world's rarest and most revelatory fossils from the enigmatic Precambrian Period – mysterious life forms over half a billion years old that predate the emergence of complex, multi-celled organisms. Indeed, the celebrated Ediacaran biota fossils preserved in Bradgate's ancient rocks proved pivotal in resolving a paradox that had long vexed Charles Darwin himself. "Bradgate Park is the only National Nature Reserve where you can find fossils of this astonishing age," notes Tony Juniper, Chair of Natural England's governing body. "These fossils were pivotal in confirming Darwin's theory that the ancient seas hosted life eons before complex organisms appeared, finally providing the 'missing link' he suspected must exist."
Uncovering a Prehistoric Past
The soon-to-be-declared reserve's profound geological significance stretches far beyond the famed Ediacaran imprints. The land itself is a palaeontological time capsule, with exposed rock faces revealing the sedimentary layers of bygone eras.  Juniper explains, "Bradgate Park's rich geological history makes it internationally important for scientific research and teaching of Precambrian palaeontology. It is a key site in the future plans for a UNESCO Global Geopark in Charnwood Forest."
A Verdant Tapestry of Life
While its prehistoric wonders understandably grab headlines, the new reserve encompasses a mosaic of diverse habitats teeming with modern-day flora and fauna worthy of equal admiration and protection. From ancient oak woodlands dating back eight centuries to vibrant heathlands and wildflower meadows, the varied landscapes support an array of rare and remarkable species: Majestic oaks over 800 years old, home to deer, endangered spiders like the 'Charnwood spider', and birds like the striking green woodpecker One of the last remaining swaths of Leicestershire's traditional heathland, harboring uncommon flora like the small heath butterfly Medieval deer parks once roamed by herds of fallow deer, now cohabitating with their wild red deer cousins Steeped in layers of natural and human history, the area even holds ties to English royalty – it was the childhood home of the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey and a favored childhood haunt of the world-renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough. As James Dymond of the Bradgate Park Trust remarks, "For Bradgate to be part of His Majesty The King's series of National Nature Reserves is a real honor."
Striking a Balance
Preservation Measure Public Benefit Protecting vital habitats and species Popular trails for hikers around Leicester Aiding recovery of rare biodiversity Opportunities for wildlife watching and learning Securing geological research value Connecting urban dwellers with local nature With its new status, a delicate balance must be struck between unfettered conservation efforts and ensuring the public can experience and appreciate the area's splendor. Tony Juniper believes the reserve "presents a reminder of how partnerships can drive nature recovery at scale while making it accessible for everyone to enjoy."
A Resounding Call for Connection
To commemorate National Nature Reserves Week from May 20-31, over 80 public events will be held across England's protected areas this month – offering the perfect chance for people to immerse themselves in these irreplaceable natural gems. Juniper said, "It's vital that we protect nature sites like this which are accessible to people living in cities. Connecting more people from diverse backgrounds with our most important places for wildlife is key to developing a lasting appreciation for conservation."
A Lasting Environmental Legacy
Bradgate Park's new designation is part of a broader national initiative by King Charles III to create an enduring "green" legacy. Through the King's Series of National Nature Reserves, five new reserves will be announced annually until 2027 with the goal of leaving "a lasting public legacy for people and nature." This crucial first step toward safeguarding an irreplaceable piece of England's natural heritage is being celebrated as a major win for future generations. "National Reserve status will help protect this site going forward," Dymond affirms. "We hope it raises the profile of our geological history and its importance worldwide." With its gnarled ancient oaks joining a national network of over 109,000 protected hectares, this historical haven will become an enduring bastion for biodiversity – and an endless source of wonder, education, and rejuvenation for all who visit. For giggles:
Imagine, if you will, a dinosaur musical (talking costumes, props, sets, the whole broadway production)
What dinosaur(s) would you want the story to be about?
I mean, I would want all the cast members to be from a single ecosystem, since that means they interacted in history and the immersion isn't broken for me XD
I think I'd go with the Nemegt. Beyond Therizinosaurus and Deinocheirus, this ecosystem had TONS of unique and interesting dinosaurs. There's a reason it features heavily in Prehistoric Planet.
I think I'd just want it to be about maybe the social structure of a particular species and the shenanigans they get up to. If we're anthropomorphizing to the level of land before time, then we can have multiple species involved. But, yeah, the dinosaurs of the Nemegt Formation are my choice.
