The murky swampy batch of yarn, once it dried, looked like this:

Not a bad effect. It would be pretty good on its own, but it's a little too pale to stand up to the purple, I suspect. How about a swatch.

Interestingly, the stripes show up much better in a picture than they do in real life. Depending on the lighting and the angle, they are very subtle, and sometimes disappear entirely. Not quite what I want, so I think I'm going to try a second round of dye on the not-purple one.

I have been trying not to buy any new yarn until the house construction is finished, partly for reasons of budget and partly for lack of storage space. Instead, I've been trying to use old stashed skeins, or else unraveling existing knitting and reusing the materials.

BUT

One of the local yarn stores is closing, and they've been sending e-mails about EVERYTHING MUST GO, so of course my mom and I had to stop in one last time to say goodbye, and tell the nice lady who ran the place how sad we are that she's closing.

This unsurprisingly led to me buying all their last remaining stock of foggy-forest-green mohair, on the grounds that I've been thinking I want to knit a sweater using mohair held together with some other yarn, and the stuff is lightweight and squashable and therefore easy to store in a small space.

AND THEN

It turned out that the nearby JoAnn Fabrics is also about to close, and they had a sweater's worth of merino/alpaca blend in a truly unpleasant shade of sickly purple. Aha! It's soft, and very cheap, and I can overdye it! And then use it with the mohair.

Before I started playing with dye, I made a small test swatch of the original purple with the mohair. As expected, it was Bad.

The color looks almost pink in the picture, but in real life it's more purple, and more flat and murky-looking. Like the color of a plastic easter egg. The purple/green combination isn't at all harmonious, but also isn't bright or startling enough to be exciting.
