I kinda think it's hilarious when comics make the most traumatized characters in their franchise a catholic priest. You're either catholic because your fucking hate yourself or you were forced to join their cult. No in-between. Jason Todd becoming a catholic priest is hilarious to me, Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner from X-Men) becoming a catholic priest is sad because I know which one of the two he is.

I have been informed that Kurt Wagner is only a priest in the comics for a short amount of time (thank you catholic god) but I also never thought I’d have a “love interest leaves church service for me” kink and yet here we are.

I would not take away Nightcrawler’s religious devotion bc it’s clearly part of his character, but the idea of him stepping down or secretly marrying is too good and I want it now.

Conversation with my coworker who is into X-Men turned into a discussion about Lessing's 1779 play Nathan der Weise when they got into all the alternate timelines of everyone's parentage. I'm not an expert on the comics but a lot of our work conversations are updating one another on the stories we like, so I think it was a successful interaction.

I ended up summarizing the play, which they agreed had a lot of interesting commonalities with the development of the X-Men universe and might have an influence on their fanworks, especially wrt Nightcrawler. And then I realized.

The themes of optimism and human rights qualified by a limited philosophical/historical context were so compelling that I'd forgotten there is literally a character named Kurt/Curd. AND HE'S ADOPTED!
