After the tori post, im curious how you got into enstars. And was tori your favorite from the start?
i got into enstars because shav really liked it and spent like 4 months sending me The most beautiful fanarts so it caught my interest. tori was indeed my favorite because she Knew id like him (made in a lab for me) so she got me into enstars like this 🪤 (i also spent like 2 months listening to little little prince star basically every day before actually getting into it it was that bad)
but i didn't rly know anything about the plot like that so the True deal breaker for me was probably that on new years eve we stayed up until like 3am and she told me the entire izlo backstory + sent me half of lionheart which absolutely broke me so i really wanted to get to it then (but it still took me a couple of months and a particularly stressing week to start the anime) (which i found kind of meh at the beginning until i got to the element episodes and those totally broke me, so in the end it goes back to fine)

helloo since we're on the topic: top historical fiction (or adjacent) ? can be any time period I just really love your taste in shows/games/etc and am always on the lookout for history inspired media !
thank you!!! im rly glad im like. inspiring other ppl to engage w things im insane abt hudofajsdfdassfsad. anyways. i will probably expand that list bc i literally forgot every single thing i ever read. also i havent watched that many movies so far
ancient times: i havent really watched a lot of movies/series set in ancient times so far :(
rome HBO (2005-2007) (tv series) - OF COURSE. i personally think its one of the best series ever made. they combine political, miliatry history with the lives of every day people in an incredible way. they never let you once engage with the series through modern lenses. according to my teacher (a historian, archeologist & self described 'romaphile') its incredibly historically accurate, mostly the clothing, set designs, characterization, military practices, etc. except for the things they straight up made up, of course.
i really enjoyed gladiator (2000), i think its a masterpiece.
prince of egypt (1998) i guess?
all the asterix movies of course, all the animated ones and most of the live actions. but i wouldnt really call it historical fiction
ok i havent actually finished watching it for now but sebastiane (1976) - an erotic, x rated, gay interpretation of the martyrdom of st sebastian. its in latin also.
wait i cant believe i forgor about assassin's creed odyssey - so far the only one ive played. its so fun and incredibly immersive visually. especially pour moi who cries into the pillow about how ill never experience the ancient world. also you can b a faggot which is always fun. i have things to say about their portrayal of same-sex sexuality and slavery in classical greece but i get why they did that considering its supposed to like. appeal to a lot of people, and a more "historically accurate" portrayal (for example of pederasty or how common slavery was etc.) would b v difficult for a lot of their target audience. alas.
medieval and early modern era:
the name of the rose (1986) - my medieval history teacher literally showed us bits of this movie to teach us about monasteries and monks fhdosiasdjasd.
the borgias (2011-2013) - incredibly messy, lots of political intrigue, and so so fun to watch. about the history of the borgia family. filled to the brim with drama.
the three musketeers (1993) - my favorite adaptation, also coincidentally the one i grew up on. casting tim curry as richelieu was genius. he slays so hard.
i also like bbc's the musketeers (2014-2016) - a neat little series. very fun and entertaining to watch.
outlaw king (2018) - like i dont think most ppl heard of this movie. its about robert the bruce's fight to reclaim the throne of scotland. starring chris pine
vikings (2013-2020) - its fun. i havent watched the entire series tho. dont expect anything resembling historical accuracy
the northman (2022) - you will see something resembling historical accuracy
mihai viteazul (michael the brave) (1971) - a fun movie. very much romanian propaganda tho.
1670 (2023-) - such a fun series!!! incredible cast, shows respect to the actual history and the lives of historical people. really cute and funny.
caravaggio (1986) - a biopic about caravaggio.
wait i also forgor about pentiment - an intriguing, immersive, and incredibly beautiful video game! it has a lot of 'the name of the rose' vibes, with it being a medieval murder mystery taking place in a monastery. its incredibly touching and made me cry, and in the last few years i very rarely cry. also im 99% sure its an indie game? go support the creators!
vaguely-medieval/early modern fantasy:
mirror mirror (2012) - a retelling of snow white. a very fun movie imo, with incredible costume design. julia roberts plays the evil queen and she SLAYS. armie hammer is unfortunately in that movie.
stardust (2007) - one of my fave movies growing up. more modern-inspired but still.
the green knight (2021) - controversial i know but i actually loved this movie! i liked it both as a standalone movie but moreso as a 21st century adaptation to sir gawain and the green knight.
galavant (2015-2016) - !!!!!!! one of the most series ever! they manage to tackle such difficult concepts and conversations with a hilarious wit. so fun to watch. i listen to a lot of the songs still, and rewatch every once in a while.
disenchantment (2018-2023) - very fun to watch, especially the first season.
i also really liked the novel uprooted by naomi novik. its a polish-inspired fantasy.
modern era:
killers of the flower moon (2023) - of course. a masterpiece
aferim! (2015) - a romanian movie set in 19th century wallachia, about two officers, a father and son, who were sent by a nobleman to retrieve an escaped enslaved romani man. a lot of the people in the comments were calling the movie humorous and funny, maybe im missing smth (as im watching with subtitles n dont understand the original language) but it was a very difficult watch for me??
the handmaiden (2016) - need i say more
black sails (2014-2017) - a prequel to the famous novel 'treasure island'. not an easy series to watch. incredibly good.
the favourite (2018) - need i say more pt 2
the rabbi's cat (le chat du rabbin) (2011) - animated movie set in early 20th century algeria. a rabbi's cat learns to talk overnight.
the nice guys (2016) - a fun murder mystery set in the 1970s
o brother, where art thou (2000) - a retelling of the odyssey set in the southern us in the 1930s
victor/victoria (1982) - set in early 20th century paris. julie andrews pretends to be a man and takes on a job as a drag queen. extremely fun, extremely gay movie.
lady chatterley's lover (2022) - very much porn for moms but it was a nice watch imo
amulet (2020) - set in like. idk. sometime in the 20th century. this is a horror movie, deals a lot with misogyny, sa, and so on. i really like it, personally. a lot of people, mostly weird men, dont tho.
the great (2020-2023) - i have mixed feelings about this show. on the one hand, its really fun to watch. on the other hand, its basically ofmd for girls who have public mental breakdowns whenever someone claims corsets were oppressive. and theyre so weird about russians, jesus christ.
disses:
domina (2021-) - i just couldnt get into it, esp since i tried right after finishing rome hbo. it was kind of silly, and not in a good way. takes itself wayyyy to seriously.
i didnt like spartacus (2010-2013) - the dialogue was almost grotesque and the editing, especially the transitions, straight up killed me
damsel (2024) - holy fuck what a trainwreck of a movie. absolute waste of angela basset and robin wright. the only good thing were the costumes.
lancelot du lac (1974) - i just didnt like it at all. couldnt get into it. i guess it was way too french and artsy fartsy for me. a movie that was trying to say both too little and too much at the same time.
i didnt rly like bram stoker's dracula (1992) - i mean. it was a fine movie. it was definitely not the godfather. the movie itself was meh. the visuals tho? absolutely stunning

“eavesdrop” Also Hii about Mihai to counteract the murderous vibes
There's a few places in Tokyo that can only be found if they want to be found. This was one of them. A cheap, smoky bar, that to most would never look open; but to foxes, never looked closed.
It was always full, but never crammed, with foxes in all shapes and sizes chattering in low voices over games of dice, cheap booze, or a round of smokes. It was a place for trash-eaters, and most of the foxes of Tokyo were just fine with that. And it was here that Hinata sat, talking to an old coworker with curly hair, stirring her drink with a straw.
"I mean, iunno. He's prolly the closest the office gets to being anything like Lady Inari, but he's different, y'know? Like, he's hot, and he's stupid smart, and he kinda always looks like he wants to eat you, but he's not like... trying. I mean, like..." She stops to drink a little.
"Like, with Lady Inari, you kinda wanna bang her because you feel like you should wanna bang her, right? And with Robara, it was like, play along, y'know, so he doesn't freak his shit all over the place. But I'd let this dude do some heinous shit to my cervix, and he doesn't even wear underwear. That's... that's some kind of energy, right?" Her gesturing does nothing to clarify any of the statements made.
"Did Nobimaru ever give a picture with the briefing? Do you know what I'm talking about? He's got white hair, and these big pointy ears... they're not fluffy, though, but like, it's still cute. His hands are huge, and his legs are long... He looks like a porcelain doll, or a fairytale prince, but if the prince decided to become a neet. I want to make him some soup. He looks like he should be fed some soup with a stupid little spoon, and then eat his main course with a different spoon." Her companion nods, but only looks more bewildered. Hinata finishes her drink and lays her head against the bar.
"I wanna brush his hair sooooooo bad. If you saw him you'd get it. Like a My Little Pony. That kills people. But only a little. That's good for us, right? Like as far as standards.... I mean, I've probably killed more people, and I'm way less brushable..."
The bartender slides her another drink, and she emerges from it with a mouth full of beer foam.
"Ume, I get it... what you said about Nobimaru....like.... I'd let this dude make me barrrrrk." She lets out a mournful little howl, and then goes back to nursing her heart with booze.

i redid the AI wataei essay after giving the bot their personality and relationship pages from the wiki here is the result
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It got the quotes right but the comparisons...im not sure of. I can see WHY the AI would make the connections though, on the surface, shallowly. I dont think Wataru is like napoleon (although it was certainly a Sentence to read), that comparison seems more fitting for pre war Eichi's appreciation of idols in general that then disappointed him in Yumenosaki (since, to my knowledge, prince andrei ends up losing his appreciation for napoleon in the book)
The Crime and Punishment part i think only Pili can comment on but i did find this piece that...yeah ok, wataei vibes, i'll give it to the AI, is reminiscent of the epilogue of ep:link. Slightly. Only in form.
Tumblr media
Now, Onegin i actually knew nothing about but after reading a summary...the whole point is that tatyana and onegin dont end up together on the same path, he only reciprocates once she's married to someone else, it's not wataei at all. I can see why at a first glance it'd seem like there's a resemblance between Onegin and Eichi (again, just going off of summaries and character analysis i've found online). Although the biggest difference is that Eichi is not a superflous man incapable of engaging in effective action. Eichi changing the narrative is the whole point of enstars if u ask me, he doesnt remain a bystander. His relationship with life isnt that of boredom but desperation. I also dont see Wataru as Tatyana, she lives in daydreams whereas Wataru is very present in reality among other people. But i do see a similarity in the way she lives through the characters she reads about in books and he does through the characters he plays as an actor...
Anyway enough. Whatdahell am i talking about here. Mihai vs Chatgpt seems to have become a series huh. Turns out no russian classic can come close to the subtleties of wataei... i think i need to go to sleep.

Clicked on your profile cause Mihai is a very common name in my country and our last prince was named Mihai. Let me tell you i didn't expect black, transgender, Norwegian, all around funny person. Quite pleasant surprise. I hope you have a great day!
Yaaay! I met a woman named Mihai years ago and she was very helpful in some decisions that ended up being pivotal for me. She had both masculine and feminine energy and was super knowledgeable and cool.
As I began to transition I realized I was meeting another pivotal moment; and an opportunity came for me to choose a name for myself. It only felt perfect to, as respectfully as possible, embrace the name of the woman who helped me so much before.
Seeing as it's the name of a member of genuine royalty, and I'm merely emulating that with a fake internet title, I try to be as respectful with the name and title as possible. ❤️❤️❤️

Biden cancels Pacific trip (Washington Post) President Biden was set to make history next week: With his trip to Papua New Guinea, he would become the first sitting American president to visit a Pacific island nation. Even though he was scheduled to spend only three hours on the ground, he was due to attend a meeting of the 18-member Pacific Islands Forum, and sign security pacts with the host and with Micronesia. The visit was to be a clear signal that after decades of neglect, the United States was focused once more on a region where China has spent a significant amount of time and money. Instead, Biden’s decision to return home after the Group of Seven meetings in Japan—canceling the Papua New Guinea and Australian legs of his trip—to deal with the U.S. debt crisis sent a starkly different signal: That American dysfunction at home continues to disrupt its agenda abroad. Rather than make history, the trip reinforced it. “This cancellation will be seen as the U.S. falling into familiar patterns, and not living up to the expectations it sets,” said Mihai Sora, a former Australian diplomat in the Pacific who is now a research fellow at the Lowy Institute, a Sydney think tank. “And it will make fruitful material for detractors seeking to undermine U.S. influence in the region.”
No to relocating (WSJ) Not many people seem willing to move for a new job. Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that 1.6% of job seekers relocated for new positions in the first quarter, the lowest level on record for a survey that reaches back to 1986. “In the 1980’s and 90’s, nearly a third of job seekers would move for new positions. That has fallen steadily since, as housing costs have risen and companies have moved to where talent pools are located. Now, remote and hybrid positions are keeping workers at home,” said Andrew Challenger, the company’s senior vice president.
Haitians fight back against gangs (Washington Post) Jean Baptiste had watched Haiti descend into chaos as violent armed gangs marauded across the capital unchecked, forcing 130,000 people from their homes with a brutal campaign of kidnapping, rape and murder. But when bandits shot and dismembered a relative last month, he said, he decided he’d had enough. Enough waiting for the Haitian government—a weak and unloved clique of unelected officials—to restore order. Enough counting on its enfeebled police force to beat the gangs back. Enough suffering while the world mostly looked away. As Jean Baptiste and more than a dozen others in his neighborhood saw it, he said, the time had come to take matters into their own hands. Armed with machetes, they work in shifts, patrolling Turgeau and defending the Port-au-Prince neighborhood from gang members. He estimates neighborhood vigilantes have killed 27 in the past two weeks. The Washington Post could not verify Jean Baptiste’s claims. But Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, Haitian police and U.S. and U.N. officials have acknowledged the phenomenon: In the absence of security, Haitians are arming themselves with rocks and machetes and banding together to fight the gangs who have turned their lives into what the U.N. human rights chief in February called a “living nightmare.”
The Offensive Before the Offensive: Ukraine Strikes Behind Russian Lines (WSJ) Early this month, four drones attacked a Russian oil refinery almost 300 miles from Ukraine. The next day, another drone hit it. Not long after another drone bombed a fuel depot on the other side of Russia, near Belarus. Call it the offensive before the offensive. Strike by pinpoint strike, Ukraine is taking aim at ammunition stores and caches of other supplies that Moscow’s forces need to fight, seeking to weaken them ahead of a broader ground campaign to push back the Russian invaders. For Ukraine, which is battling a larger military, the attacks are important to chip away at Russia’s battlefield resources. Any engagement longer than a few days becomes a logistical contest, say commanders, so destroying stores of ammunition, fuel and spare parts can be more significant than taking out individual tanks or artillery pieces, because the impact can be broader. A tank without fuel or shells is of little use. “This is the preparatory stage,” said Oleksandr Kovalenko, an analyst at the Ukrainian Center for Security Studies. “It is about destabilizing and weakening the capabilities of the enemy before the offensive.”
Pakistani police surround Imran Khan’s home, claim former leader is hiding suspects in recent riots (AP) Police surrounded the home of former Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday, claiming he was sheltering dozens of people allegedly involved in violent protests over his recent detention. The police deployment was likely to anger Khan’s many followers and raised concerns about more clashes between them and the security forces. Last week, Khan supporters had attacked public property and military installations after he was dragged out of a courtroom and detained. The popular opposition leader was released over the weekend and returned to his home in an upscale district of Lahore, Pakistan’s second largest city and the capital of the Punjab region. Pakistani authorities have said they would prosecute civilians involved in recent anti-government protests in military courts. The army chief, Gen. Asim Munir, said in a speech to troops Wednesday that “recently planned and orchestrated tragic incidents will never be allowed again at any cost.” The advocacy group Amnesty International and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said they were alarmed by the government’s plan.
UN expert: Myanmar military imported $1 billion in weapons since 2021 coup (AP) Myanmar’s military has imported at least $1 billion worth of weapons and related material from Russia, China and other countries since its February 2021 coup, some of which it has used to carry out atrocities against civilians, according to a U.N. report released Wednesday. The weapons continue to flow to the military despite overwhelming evidence of its responsibility for the atrocities, including some that amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity, said Tom Andrews, the U.N. independent investigator on human rights in Myanmar. As an example of what he called the junta’s brutality, Andrews pointed to its April 11 airstrike using a Russian Yak-130 fighter jet on a ceremony attended by some 300 opponents of army rule, which was quickly followed by an attack by Russian Mi-35 helicopters on those who came to help. He said at least 160 people were killed, including many children.
China loans pushing world’s poorest countries to brink of collapse (AP) A dozen poor countries are facing economic instability and even collapse under the weight of hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign loans, much of them from the world’s biggest and most unforgiving government lender, China. An Associated Press analysis of a dozen countries most indebted to China—including Pakistan, Kenya, Zambia, Laos and Mongolia—found paying back that debt is consuming an ever-greater amount of the tax revenue needed to keep schools open, provide electricity and pay for food and fuel. And it’s draining foreign currency reserves these countries use to pay interest on those loans, leaving some with just months before that money is gone. Behind the scenes is China’s reluctance to forgive debt and its extreme secrecy about how much money it has loaned and on what terms, which has kept other major lenders from stepping in to help. On top of that is the recent discovery that borrowers have been forced to put cash in hidden escrow accounts that push China to the front of the line of creditors to be paid. Countries in AP’s analysis had as much as 50% of their foreign loans from China and most were devoting more than a third of government revenue to paying off foreign debt. Two of them, Zambia and Sri Lanka, have already gone into default.
800 miles away (NYT) “Jakarta has a lot of problems,” says Hannah Beech, The Times’s senior correspondent for Asia, “but its most existential one is that it is sinking in some places by up to a foot a year.” Climate change is part of the reason: The Java Sea—which surrounds Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital—is rising. But an even bigger factor is that Jakartans, desperate for access to clean water, have dug thousands of illegal wells that effectively deflate the marshes underneath the city. Today, 40 percent of Jakarta lies below sea level, and flooding is increasingly common. The encroaching sea presents a threat to one of the world’s most densely packed cities, where 10 million people live in an area about half the size of New York City, and another 20 million reside in the surrounding region. To deal with that threat, Indonesia’s popular president—Joko Widodo, in his ninth year in office—has devised an audacious solution: He is moving the country’s capital. The new capital, now under construction, is called Nusantara. It is being built from the ground up, about 800 miles from the current capital, in Borneo. Nusantara won’t be just any planned city, the president asserts, but a green metropolis run on renewable energy, where there are no choking traffic jams and people can stroll and bike along verdant paths. There are, of course, a lot of doubts about whether Indonesia can really pull this off.
Johannesburg, Where Mayors Last Just Months, or Even Only Weeks (NYT) NOW HIRING: A mayor of Johannesburg. DUTIES: Managing fickle governing partners. Dodging insults from opposition parties. And cleaning up piles of garbage. LENGTH OF TERM: Likely very short. This month, after days of brinkmanship and arm twisting, the city inaugurated its sixth different mayor in 22 months: Kabelo Gwamanda, a first-term city councilor from a political party that got just 1 percent of the vote in the last municipal election. His ascent came after he won the majority of the votes of the city’s 270 elected council members. And it capped the latest chapter in a political soap opera where mayoral terms are measured in weeks and months, and where the inability of council members to stick with a leader has resulted in a municipal mess, with Johannesburg residents the biggest losers. While political leaders bicker over power and cliques, exasperated residents often struggle through days without electricity and water, dodge cratered roads and fret about dilapidated buildings.
With 62 Newly Discovered Moons, Saturn Knocks Jupiter Off Its Pedestal (NYT) The International Astronomical Union is set to recognize more than 60 new moons gravitating around Saturn. That’s a grand total of 145 moons for the ringed celestial object, surpassing Jupiter’s 95 moons.
She finished last, but this runner won fans for not giving up in a pounding rain (NPR) She could have just quit. The race was long decided, and rain was falling in torrents. But Bou Samnang was running for her country—Cambodia—so she kept going, racing alone on a track in Phnom Penh. And for that, she is being hailed as an inspiration. “I tried to reach the finish line because I wanted to show people that in life, even though we go a bit slow or fast, we will reach our destination all the same,” she said afterward, according to Agence France-Presse. “So we should not give up. We should try our best.” News of Bou Samnang’s persistence spread rapidly: Sports and news outlets around the world shared video of her finishing the women’s 5,000-meter race (3.1 miles) on May 8 at the Southeast Asian Games, which Cambodia is hosting for the first time. She raced that day despite struggling with the effects of anemia, Bou Samnang told the AFP, adding that she was committed to run for her country. The runner’s persistence was also noted by Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, who said he was proud of her for reminding everyone that sports are about more than winning and losing.
