🧁 - baking them their first homemade cake for a birthday

oooooh boy. As we all know, this guy loves sweets. He'd eat a whole jar of sugar without hesitation. But honey is easier to come by so he settles.

He's honestly forgets about his birthday, but you're counting down the days. You saved up every rupee you could to buy all the ingredients the day before (you wanted to make sure nothing would spoil and ruin the surprise). You worked toilfully, in the kitchen, setting fire in the oven to make sure it would be hot enough by the time you finished with the batter.

You cracked the eggs carefully, making sure not a single part of the shell escaped into your mixture. Next adding butter and sugar while carefully mixing. Then you added the dry ingredients like the wheat you crushed into flour earlier. Once everything was mixed to perfection, you quickly smothered the dying fire, dusting out the ashes and replacing it with your cake batter.

Unfortunately you couldn't make the frosting like those fancy cakes you've only seen nobles get, but you hope that Hyrule wouldn't mind (who are you kidding he'll probably cry at seeing your hard work).

You nearly had the surprise nearly ruined when Hyrule came stumbling in, mumbling about something smelling good. You quickly ushered him out, coming up with the dumbest excuse you could think of.

"I burnt the honey, sorry, just give me a second to clean it up!"

The bombastic side eye he gave you (what do you mean you burnt perfectly good honey? Also that lie was shit, but he loves you too much to comment on it...for now). You were practically jumping on the balls of your feet as you waited for the dessert to bake. You were scared that Rulie would get bored and leave to travel for a bit. Even though he had a place to call home now he never failed to find himself back in the wild, even just for a short moment. It warmed your heart that he never failed to make it back eventually, warm smile when you greeted him with a "welcome home".

You blinked out of your thoughts, quickly taking the cake out when you noticed it had finished, waving your hand over it like it would help the cake cool any faster. You could practically feel Hyrule's anticipation as the smell of the sweet delight waft from the kitchen throughout the house.

You cut a large piece for him and a normal sized piece for yourself, carrying the two plates into the living area. Hyrule's hazel eyes were on the plate in an instant, pupils dilating just the slightest. A large grin overtook your face, handing him the plate.

"Happy birthday Link! A sweet dessert for an even sweeter person."

Suddenly Hyrule felt like his mouth was dry, wide eyes looking up to meet yours. You were staring at him so tenderly...you had gone out of your way to make him such a wonderful dessert...you had given him a place to call home and now you were celebrating him for surviving for another year...

He couldn't stop the tear from sliding down his cheek. Normally his birthday was something he avoided, he felt more like a curse brought to this land than anything...but here you were, cherishing a day that meant he was here, that he existed.

"Y-you shouldn't have..." He murmured, setting the plate in his lap or else he drop it.

"I wanted to," You replied back just as softly. "You deserve to be spoiled, and I'm gonna do all the spoiling."

Hyrule sniffled before giving you the brightest, wettest smile you had ever witnessed, "Thank you, I love you so much."

"I love you too, silly," You chuckled warmly. "Now lets eat before it gets cold."
