so apparently i am the kind of employee where if i go fully MIA for like two weeks due to a medical emergency (meaning that someone needs to step in and cover me for that time) i come back to a promotion and like 12 major things taken off my plate and redelegated
#.txt#so i am no longer the head of HR and a payroll specialist and a metrics and analytics specialist and a compliance officer#and an abuse investigator and a paralegal and an IT specialist and a programs manager and a projects specialist#and a public relations specialist and a systems analyst and an accountant and a top level manager for over 800 people#all while only having the title of ''executive assistant''#now i am only like two of those things and my title reflects that#:)

I was soooo excited to work under a bomb ass woman with a PhD in chemical engineering who was running experiments related to virus filtration systems last summer only to be severely disappointed because she clearly did not want undergrads working in her lab, was forced into accepting us by the university, and then had no activities or projects lined up for us to do once we were there
#at first i thought it was so cool that just one other undergrad and i were allowed to work under her#but now its clear to me that she didnt even want That and that was the compromise she had to settle for with the rest of her department#and i get it. the viruses she was working with cost $1000/mg. why would she ever let someone without even a bachelor's degree handle them#but that begs the question. why even let undergrads into your lab at all if you cannot let them assist with your projects#most other undergrads actively helped with the research their mentors (phd students) were conducting#meanwhile my mentor had to take time out of his busy schedule Making Up Shit for me and my lab partner to do#and he was very nice and tried hard for us but its clear the only instructions he was operating on#were ''dont let the undergrads touch the important shit.'' and then his boss who was running the whole operation#wasnt even in the country for most of the program so we couldnt even interview her or pick her brain#definitely the experience was not at all as advertised v_v and im sad because on paper it sounds cool#and i mean i still got stuff out of it so i cant complain too much. but i can complain a little

"Claire Cao was only a senior in high school when she saw a vital need in her community — and filled it.
In 2024, the teenager spent her time outside of school volunteering at Blanchet House, a Portland-based nonprofit that serves people experiencing homelessness through food donations, clothing drives, and mental health assistance programs.
As she logged hours as a Blanchet House student ambassador, Cao soon realized how difficult it was for community members to keep track of shelter openings, rotating food service programs, and available mental health resources.
“During one afternoon meal service, I met Dano, an unhoused man who shared his struggles with accessing basic services like food and shelter,” Cao said in a recent press release.
“Left disconnected from essential services, Dano described his struggles of not knowing where to go or which shelters had available beds.”
Combining her love for technology, law, and public policy, Cao pulled available resources into a database and created the ShelterBridge app, which connects users to shelters and services in their area.
“ShelterBridge wasn’t simply inspired by Dano — it was inspired by the realization that access to resources is a fundamental need that we, as a community, can do a better job of providing,” Cao emphasized.
“I wanted to use my skills to build something that could bridge that gap, ensuring that no one falls through the cracks simply because they don’t know where to turn for help.”
In addition to linking users to services in their area, the app also has a rating system similar to Yelp. This system allows people to leave star ratings and reviews on shelters, food services, hotlines, and legal aid.
The ratings not only help users differentiate between services in their area — but they also provide invaluable feedback to the nonprofits, organizations, and government programs that service them.
“We've been asking for an app like this for a number of years now,” Scott Kerman, executive director of Blanchet House, told Portland news station KGW.
In mid-January, Cao won the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Oregon’s First District for her work with ShelterBridge — outcompeting 12,682 student submissions.
Since the app first launched, Cao and her growing ShelterBridge team — which includes enterprising high schoolers and college students from across the nation — have expanded services to California, Philadelphia, Seattle, Los Angeles, and North Carolina.

“Claire and the team she’s working with deserve all the credit in the world because they're doing something that frankly nobody else has really stepped up to do,” Kerman said.
“To have the kind of technology that we use every day with hotels and other kinds of reservations [to] help people get into safe, supportive and dignified shelter would be a game changer for our community.”
Although the app started as a class project, Cao said ShelterBridge’s success has far surpassed her expectations.
“I do hope to keep it up,” she told Oregon outlet KOIN 6 News, as she looked ahead to college and beyond. “I’ve made a lot of efforts to expand it to other cities as well — and it’s something I can mostly do from a computer or my laptop at home.”

An open letter to the U.S. Congress
It’s time to fund the government—especially WIC!
143 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!
Now that Congress has a Speaker they must reach a comprehensive, bipartisan agreement to fund the Government, which is critical for a number of bipartisan priorities – including child care, nutrition assistance, public health, research and development, and national security. The Biden Administration also recently communicated with Congress about critical funding needs for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), the Student Aid Administration, and the Social Security Administration to prevent harmful impacts on women and children, students, seniors and individuals with disabilities in the coming year, and I expect Congress to address these needs as well. We also need funding for the Disaster Relief Fund to enable FEMA to continue supporting critical response efforts and recovery projects in communities across the country. Thanks.

The Party at Lucky 38: So after all the debate about you succumbing to greed...Did you succumb to greed, or make a stand? I mean obviously you lived but, did you really turn down all that gold, or did you somehow cheat the question.
Minka: Oh no I thought about it for a second sure, but I didn't care that much about money honestly -
*Boone, who has seen her drop 4,000caps on 308 ammo for him at random, nodding in silent 'yeah that tracks'*
Minka: -and I didn't want to complicate things. I decided only fair to stick to my guns and live clean, so no I didn't drag my overladen body out of that place. I went in going 'only what you can take' and I only took what I could carry out easily.
Everyone: *nodding, impressed*
Arcade, smarter and used to Minka(tm) existence plane, dripping with tired sarcasm: What you could carry being one gold bar, then?
Minka, fucking jacked, dropping 315lbs of gold bars: built different
#I didn't do the 'lug all the stuff and be sneaky by reloading 50 times' thing bc I /did/ want to make a statement but I was like#'realistically it makes sense to grab one though. what you can carry is fair.' and I'd forgotten she can carry a fuck ton so. 9 it was#only a pie piece of the loot sure but I am very happy with her weird moral and financial high-middle ground#r's fo new vegas run#dead money#He won't complain once I've funded every project he can think of and donated the rest to mohave ghetto assistance programs#tbh if it actually made any difference I'd spend 14 hours reverse pickpocketing my wealth into all citizens' pockets

Dandelion News - February 15-21
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $kaybarr1735 or check out my Dandelion Doodles!
1. Solar farms managed for nature boost bird abundance and diversity, new study finds
“There were more than twice as many farmland birds in the well-managed solar farms compared with the intensively farmed land, and nearly 16 times as many woodland birds. […] Overall, diversity was 2.5 times higher, while woodland birds were nine times more diverse.”
2. Washington judge blocks Trump’s gender-affirming care ban, says it's unconstitutional in multiple ways
“This marks the second time in a week that a judge has stood in the way of Trump’s attacks on trans kids. [… The ruling grants] a temporary restraining order that halts enforcement of provisions in Trump’s directive that would cut off federal funding to medical institutions that provide gender-affirming care to minors.”
3. Fog harvesting could provide water for arid cities
“17,000 sq m of mesh could produce enough water to meet the weekly water demand of [… the] urban slums. 110 sq m could meet the annual demand for the irrigation of the city's green spaces. Fog water could be used for soil-free (hydroponic) agriculture, with yields of 33 to 44lb (15 to 20kg) of green vegetables in a month.”
4. Audubon Applauds Bipartisan Federal Effort to Protect Delaware River Basin with Critical Reauthorization Bill
“The bill would […] ensure long-term conservation and restoration efforts, expand the official definition of the basin to include Maryland, and prioritize projects that serve small, rural, and disadvantaged communities. […] The watershed provides important year-round habitats and critical migratory stopovers for approximately 400 bird species[….]”
5. mRNA vaccines show promise in pancreatic cancer in early trial
“Half of the people in the study — eight of the participants — responded to the vaccine, producing T cells that targeted their tumors. […] Just two of the patients who had a response to the vaccine had their cancer return during the three-year follow- up, compared to seven of the eight who did not respond to the vaccine treatments.”
6. Minn. Lt. Gov. Flanagan Makes It Official; She's running for U.S. Senate
“[Flanagan has] “championed kitchen-table issues like raising the minimum wage, paid family and medical leave, and free school meals.” If elected, Flanagan, a tribal citizen of the White Earth Nation, would become the first Native American female U.S. senator in history.”
7. Federal Funding Restored for Low-Income Alabama Utility Assistance After Outcry

“A program meant to help low-income Alabamians pay their utility bills has resumed two weeks after it was canceled due to an executive order from President Donald Trump. […] “We can confirm the funds are reaching those affected by the previous pause[….]””
8. Modeling study suggests Amazon rainforest is more resilient than assumed
“[Previous] studies were either conducted with global climate models that used a simplified representation of convection [or were on a regional scale….] According to the computations, mean annual precipitation in the Amazon does not change significantly even after complete deforestation.“
9. States are moving forward with Buy Clean policies despite Trump reversal
““Buy Clean is a great example of how states and other nonfederal actors can continue to press forward on climate action, regardless of what the federal government does,” said Casey Katims, executive director of the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of two dozen governors.”
10. The rewilded golf courses teeming with life
“A wildflower meadow, ponds, scrub habitat, coastline and even an area of peat bog can be found on this little 60-acre (24-hectare) plot, which boasts roe deer, otters, lizards, eels and a huge array of insects and birds.”

Justice 40
Joe Biden is boring and often bad at tooting his own horn, but by god, he is good at process.
Justice 40 is simple but powerful application of that. its a shift in how the executive branch works. 40% of money from a bunch of existing programs should go to census tracts that are overburdened with pollution, at higher risk for climate change, and have been historically underserved.
The shorthand here is basically "communities that don't have enough internal resources to deal with long term problems". So yes, communities that had been redlined for decades, ones that have Superfund sites, ones that have high rates of asthma from air pollution.
and this is by census tract. Not city. census tract. So parts of New York City qualify... but other parts don't. And the city HAS to use the money in the targeted part. it doesn't go into the communal pool. it's for THAT tract specifically.
Also all land federally recognized as belonging to a Native American tribe and all Alaskan Native Villages qualify, specifically.
And again, this is for existing programs that are already running and have existing staff and budgets. They're supposed to prioritize grants and projects for those areas specifically. And that's everything from Department of Agriculture, to FEMA, to Labor, to Environmental Protection.
Does it instantly get rid of all the baked in racism from decades past? No, not even close. But it puts in a countermeasure that has a concrete and measurable goal to aim for rather than a nebulous "suck less." even if the administration changes, many of those changes will stick.
And as things improve, some tracts may come off the list! Some may go on that weren't there before!
You can see a map here. Blue highlighted tracts are "disadvantaged" so qualify for that extra assistance! Check and see if you live in one or part of your town does. Because if you've been hearing constantly "we can't afford to fix X problem..." and you're in that tract.... there's money available. For you. Build that sidewalk, fix those lead pipes, get that brush truck your volunteer fire department has been asking for.
And tell your local officials that! "did you look at Justice 40 for funding". And even if they're doing their best, particularly people in little towns.... being a government official isn't their full time job. They may have missed it. Just asking them about the program may suddenly open a world of possibilities.

I wanted to ask after seeing your human solaria. But did you make it that Abacus is living through Yi's sprite?(forgot the name XD)
i keep having to remember what i have and haven't posted here lol. BUT! the Ruyi that exists in DWBI AU is not the same as the Ruyi from the game. Been calling him Ruyi 2.0 or Twoyi for the time being. When Ruyi was destroyedby Eigong, he gave Yi a back up of his settings "Should he ever acquire a new assistant." So I was playing around with an Abacus that had a similar energy but wasn't quite the abacus we know from the game. They repurpose the ship they landed in to act as makeshift hardware to house the ai in and then hooked him up to the nymph so he can project himself outside of the ship if needed. He doesn't have the same functional capability that OG Ruyi had and also has some complicated feelings about existing in the shadow of that original version of himself. Twoyi is also a little more playful, naive, and curious than the OG Ruyi, since he's so new to the world and doesn't have ANY of OG Ruyi's memories. Shuanshuan also helped a little in programming him :3
