Ooooo, hi hi! I've got a poll! What's everyone's favorite kingdom? Not like a monarchy lol, but Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Archaeabacteria, or (Eu)Bacteria! I really like Fungi! :D

Taking a quiet moment on a busy day to share this picture of the slime mold Fuligo septica, looking more dried out than I normally encounter them. (Forbidden mutant pretzel?)
Time stops for no one, but I have to stop long enough to let the techs at Subaru give my Outback an oil change. Then it's back on the road for errands in Portland today, and tomorrow morning I'm leading a birdwatching tour for the Camas Public Library (which is full with a waitlist!) Saturday morning I'll be leading a walk and talk at Cooper Mountain for the Tualitin Hills Park and Recreation District; I'll be focusing on the importance of oak woodlands and savannas in the Willamette Valley ecoregion. (That one still has a few spaces left, and you can contact the THPRD to register.)
And then it's zipping back to the coast for a tour on Sunday, and back to work on the to-do list. Once I'm settled back in Portland full time in September I'll be glad to not have to make this drive every time I have work there, but for now I'm still going to be commuting back and forth almost every week. Wish me luck!

Collage of #Protista , probably the best-known #wastebaskettaxon. The members have little in common apart from being Eukaryota that are not plants, animals or fungi i.e. not complex multicellular organisms. https://www.instagram.com/p/CqY2XCgvENR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Symbiotes is a group of personified biological kingdoms.
Archie (Archaea) - The Scout (the reddish one)
"Think about it. I'm sure you don't want to waste your powers on me, do you?"
Power: Extremophilia
Archie is able to survive in the hardest environments, including temperature, pressure and chemical extremes.
Fun facts: Archie is the calmest member of the Symbiotes, she wouldn't hurt a fly. She also likes to help others.
Bactrodia (Bacteria) - The Alchemist (the purplish one)
"Omnia ex spiritum animae."
Power: Synthesis
Bactrodia is able to create about any chemical she wishes to.
Fun facts: Bactrodia is interested in the occult, mainly necromancy.
Patrick (Protista) - The Spy (the blue one)
"You might be surprised, but I absolutely got inside."
Power: Amoeboid Locomotion
Patrick has an extremely flexible body, allowing him to fit through the tiniest hole.
Fun facts: He has a see-through body, allowing others to see his meals. Patrick doesn't mind.
Plantagenet (Plantae) - The Support (the tree one)
"Don't worry, I'm here with you."
Power:Plant Imitation
Plantagenet is able to not only physiologically imitate any plant, but also change size to be a support for transportation of other Symbiotes. She's also able to grow and move quicker than any plant would be able to.
Fun facts: She's able to heal people physically and emotionally.
Animer (Animalia) - The Fighter (the whatever flying one)
"You can't defeat me in any form of mine."
Power: Formshift
Animer is a shapeshifter, allowing him to get the abilities of multiple animals, even at once.
Fun facts: He's the biggest eater of this group, requiring the most in terms of food each day.
Phuni (Fungi) - The Communicator (the brown one)
"It was never about just sending a message."
Power: Mycellium Communication
Phunia is able to voluntarily extend their mycelium and use that to enable distance communication.
Fun facts: Even though Phuni takes a liking in old things, they dislike Bactrodia's occultism.
Panvir (Viruses) - The Control (the robot one)
"PLEASE-STOP-DOING-THAT-RIGHT-NOW."
Power: Nucleic Command
Panvir can voluntarily mind-control others. He uses this for pranks or to keep the other Symbiotes fighting for good.
Fun facts: Panvir is seen by the wider society controversially, producing debates on whether he should have rights.

DID YOU KNOW SEAWEED AND ITS ILK (ie. kelp) IS A PROTIST NOT A PLANT???

THESE ARE NOT PLANTS
I was going put together a cute meme about how seaweed/kelp isn't a plant, it's macroalgae. But to do that, I wanted to show a photo of some ocean life that actually are plants. The problem is that the first two sources that come up when you do a google search for "ocean plants" include multiple kinds of algae, as well as ANEMONES AND CORALS. CORALS AND ANEMONES ARE ANIMALS.
So now, the theme of this post has changed from "Kelp isn't a plant" to:
"NONE OF THESE THINGS ARE PLANTS"
Kelp are a type of macro algae from the Protista kingdom. Protists are not animals, plants or fungi.
Anemone and corals are from the Metazoa sub-kingdom, aka they are animals. They are also not plants. No, not even the corals that host photosynthetic organisms within them - because the zooxanthellae they host are protists, like the kelp.

Whats the difference between lichen, moss, mould and mushrooms if they're all fungus? Aren't they all the same sorta thing?
so, interestingly, all of these groups are very different !! instead of naming the differences, let me quickly explain what exactly these organisms are.
lichen :
lichens are symbiotic organisms, meaning they are in themselves the product of a relationship between different organisms. to simplify it, lichens are big part fungus, & smaller part algae (protista) or cyanobacteria (monera). these different forms of life together create lichen, which grows on trees, rocks, leaves, mosses & sometimes other lichens !!
to read more about lichens, check out @/lichenaday's blog :-)
moss :
mosses are actually not fungi at all !! they are small, flowerless plants. they grow on trees & in soil. :-)
mould :
mould is a type of structure that fungi can form - it is entirely fungal. it reproduces through airborne spores :-) there are many different types of mould ; some are toxic, some are used medicinally, & some are saprotrophs.
(note : slime moulds & water moulds are unrelated to fungal moulds !!)
mushrooms :
so, lots of people think mushrooms are a species of fungus, but they are not. "mushroom" refers to the fruiting body of a fungus ; what a mushroom is to a fungus is comparable to what a flower is to a tree - the part that reproduces !! not all fungi produce mushrooms (e.g. moulds, which do not have fruiting bodies as the entire organism is able to release spores). there are currently only 14 000 discovered fungi that produce mushrooms !! more fungi that don't produce mushrooms include mildew, yeast & lichen.
so, yes !! they're all quite different in structure, cells & function in the ecosystem.
