AI Tool Reproduces Ancient Cuneiform Characters with High Accuracy

ProtoSnap, developed by Cornell and Tel Aviv universities, aligns prototype signs to photographed clay tablets to decode thousands of years of Mesopotamian writing.
Cornell University researchers report that scholars can now use artificial intelligence to “identify and copy over cuneiform characters from photos of tablets,” greatly easing the reading of these intricate scripts.
The new method, called ProtoSnap, effectively “snaps” a skeletal template of a cuneiform sign onto the image of a tablet, aligning the prototype to the strokes actually impressed in the clay.
By fitting each character’s prototype to its real-world variation, the system can produce an accurate copy of any sign and even reproduce entire tablets.
"Cuneiform, like Egyptian hieroglyphs, is one of the oldest known writing systems and contains over 1,000 unique symbols.
Its characters change shape dramatically across different eras, cultures and even individual scribes so that even the same character… looks different across time,” Cornell computer scientist Hadar Averbuch-Elor explains.
This extreme variability has long made automated reading of cuneiform a very challenging problem.
The ProtoSnap technique addresses this by using a generative AI model known as a diffusion model.
It compares each pixel of a photographed tablet character to a reference prototype sign, calculating deep-feature similarities.
Once the correspondences are found, the AI aligns the prototype skeleton to the tablet’s marking and “snaps” it into place so that the template matches the actual strokes.
In effect, the system corrects for differences in writing style or tablet wear by deforming the ideal prototype to fit the real inscription.
Crucially, the corrected (or “snapped”) character images can then train other AI tools.
The researchers used these aligned signs to train optical-character-recognition models that turn tablet photos into machine-readable text.
They found the models trained on ProtoSnap data performed much better than previous approaches at recognizing cuneiform signs, especially the rare ones or those with highly varied forms.
In practical terms, this means the AI can read and copy symbols that earlier methods often missed.
This advance could save scholars enormous amounts of time.
Traditionally, experts painstakingly hand-copy each cuneiform sign on a tablet.
The AI method can automate that process, freeing specialists to focus on interpretation.
It also enables large-scale comparisons of handwriting across time and place, something too laborious to do by hand.
As Tel Aviv University archaeologist Yoram Cohen says, the goal is to “increase the ancient sources available to us by tenfold,” allowing big-data analysis of how ancient societies lived – from their religion and economy to their laws and social life.
The research was led by Hadar Averbuch-Elor of Cornell Tech and carried out jointly with colleagues at Tel Aviv University.
Graduate student Rachel Mikulinsky, a co-first author, will present the work – titled “ProtoSnap: Prototype Alignment for Cuneiform Signs” – at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in April.
In all, roughly 500,000 cuneiform tablets are stored in museums worldwide, but only a small fraction have ever been translated and published.
By giving AI a way to automatically interpret the vast trove of tablet images, the ProtoSnap method could unlock centuries of untapped knowledge about the ancient world.

Snarry-a-Thon 2015 Recs
Snarry-a-Thon is an annual fest of Snarry goodness that always brings so much creativity and joy in the Snarry community. I am forever blown away by how much talent and passion Snarry-lovers have. With that in mind, I wanted to create some special recs for a fest near and dear to my heart.
With that, here are my Top 5 picks for the 2015 fest! But first...
Disclaimer: my rec lists are created based on my personal experiences and preferences. There are plenty of other stories and authors who are quite good and deserve just as much love. This is not meant to be an objective “best of the best” list, but the subjective opinion of a longtime reader and fangirl.
Painted in the Worst Light
by asecretchord. Rated: E. Words: 98,457. Trials. Wizengamot.
Severus survived Nagini's bite and is now on trial before the Wizengamot. Due to a weird loophole in the law books, he has the right to choose any Ministry employee to defend him, and he chooses Auror-trainee, Harry Potter.
Under the Cover of Darkness
by avioleta (@avioleta). Rated: E. Words: 22,515. Muggle AU. First Time. Slow build. Masturbation.
Harry is a graduate student studying criminal psychology; Snape is an investigative reporter with a questionable past. Together, the go undercover to research the nefarious Scottish cult headed by Tom Riddle. They discover far more than they bargained for.
A House, a Home
by elmyraemilie. Rated: T. Words: 20,072.
Snape and Potter have gone their separate ways after the war. Snape is shocked to find that the builder he's contacted to do some minor repairs on Spinner's End turns out to be Harry Potter. That's not the only shock he's going to have, either.
The Builder
by sra_danvers. Rated: M. Words: 8,051.
Ten years after the war, Severus has saved enough Galleons to renovate Spinner’s End. He's stunned to find the work will be done by none other than Harry Potter.
ProtoSnape
by suitesamba (@suitesamba). Rated: E. Words: 13,342. Humor. Mystery.
When WWW decides to add Headmaster Snape to their Wizarding Heroes Action Figure line, Harry begins a correspondence with Snape’s cousin to iron out the details of the prototype. Albert Prince Jr. has some very specific ideas, and Harry soon finds himself counting buttons and measuring cauldron bottoms in a bid to get the action figure to market, and to find out a bit more about this mysterious cousin.

HP Rec Fest - Day 16
Fest - @hprecfest Theme - A fic that made you laugh
Snarry is complicated/messy/angsty. But also funny! Lots of Snarry fics are really funny deconstructions of some super popular tropes during the eras they got written. Today I got ten Snarry fics that made me laugh. Nobody asked me for a list but I made one anyway because Snarry!!!
D for Defender by Amand_r. Bat Snape forever <3
There's a man stalking the Wizarding world. Or a bat. Maybe a Man-Bat. Severus is probably having an affair, Harry's tired all the time, oh, and those drunks out in East Anglia are complaining about the green lights. Again.
The GL, Oder Der Giftige Lautsprecher, nicht wahr? by Rakina. Snape is a dick shaped plant. Literally.
This looked something like a round gourd, bulbous and flushed red. As Harry stared at it he realised the gourd's shape was alarmingly testicular, and the dusting of dark bristles over its surface did nothing to lessen the resemblance.
Better Homes and Dungeons by abstractconcept. Relationship problems because Snape and Harry of course are awful at communication.
“He’s bored with me,” Snape said despondently. “Naturally,” Draco replied, draining his gin and tonic. “You don’t throttle him nearly enough.” He poured himself another glass. “Learn to keep your relationship more exciting. Break out the whips more often.”
Sheer Dumb Luck by rexluscus. Of course the best solution to win the war is screwing Snape. Literally. Also in other ways.
For once, Harry and Voldemort want the same thing, and they want it from Snape.
Fall into Charybdis by Nimori. Dirtybadhotwrong. Also funny!
"Of course." Harry waited until the floo whooshed, then rounded on Snape. "What are you playing at, you greasy prick?" "I think you should call me Dad," Snape said, examining his nails.
Protosnape by suitesamba. Snarry authors also write non dirtybadhotwrong. Sorry if my recs gave you the wrong impression at any point. This one is wholesome and funny!
Great Liars, Great Magicians by LoupGarou. BACK TO THE DIRTYBADHOTWRONG.
Dumbledore forces Harry to bond with Snape, who demands an heir, but when Harry announces his pregnancy, Snape doesn't believe him. The road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but the path to love is strewn with sex, lies, and manipulations.
A Tolerable End to an Unfortunate Situation by who_la_hoop. Of course Snape doesn't stay dead. Of course he is a problem.
When a dead, naked Snape enters the Great Hall – resurrected from the dead and out for Harry Potter's blood – it's the start of a whole new set of problems for the reluctant hero of the wizarding world.
Pink Slip by Cluegirl. Voldemort wins and ofc Harry is tortured. Really tortured :D
It is a long-held tradition for the children of one's enemies to be fostered in one's own household in order to enforce both sides' adherence to a treaty of peace. Harry doesn't find much comfort in the peace that has been bought with his freedom, but he's just a Fosterling in the house of Malfoy -- his only avenue of complaint lay with his Welfare Overseer, one Severus Snape.
Unexpected by Seeker. Snape gets deaged and everybody exploits that. Really exploits him :D
Thirty years as a Death Eater cum double agent and it came down to this.

Wow. It’s still 2019 and I’ve finally finished my Fandom Trumps Hate 2019 work for drinkingcocoa. I assumed I’d be writing a Sherlock BBC story but she asked for my other favorite thing in the world - something Snape-centric. The above work is a companion piece to my earlier published “ProtoSnape” - the story of Harry Potter and WWW’s series of Wizarding Hero Action Figures. This piece is the same story told from Snape’s point of view. There’s a touch of snarry down the road but the story stands as a Severus-centric humor/genfic. Working with drinkingcocoa was wonderful - she gave me all the time that I needed with no pressure and tons of flexibility on the story itself.

ProtoSnape by @suitesamba is one of my all-time favorite Snape fanfics. It pays tribute to all the most humorous and affectionate ways fandom likes to reimagine Snape, it handles the Snarry romance with deft humor, and throughout, SuiteSamba maintains a light, sure touch.
ProtoSnape is from Harry’s point of view. When I bid on SuiteSamba’s work for @fandomtrumpshate 2019, she revisited this story from Snape’s point of view, and PseudoPrince is the result. It’s funny and lighthearted and mature again, and gets at the heart of what I love about the writing of this character, whether by JK Rowling or by a masterful fanfic author: “Details were important. A figure that many might perceive in a negative light had to be perfect in every way.”
In canon, Snape’s dying request was that Harry look at him. in PseudoPrince, he lives! to learn what Harry saw when he looked at Snape.
I cannot recommend this lovely, humorous piece highly enough. Read them both and enjoy.

Favorite Fanworks
Disclaimer: I’m an incurable multi-shipper.
At first I wanted to track down every fic I’ve ever read and make a master list of my favorite Snape fics, but time’s a scarce resource these few days and I’m running late for Day 25, so here’s the quick attempt at compiling my favorite fics. Since I’m doing this with time efficiency in mind, I’ll stick to the fics I’ve got bookmarked either on AO3 or FF.net.
1. Snarry
The Boy Who Died A Lot and Chrysalis by starcrossedgirl
Protosnape by suitesamba (post-war AU)
Imaginis by Leela (EWE, bookstore-owner Snape, portrait RAB)
Harry Potter and the Poison Pen by Diana Williams (post-war AU)
Between the Lines by Dementordelta (HBP-divergent AU)
A Time to Forget by GatewayGirl (sort of de-aging, sort of epilogue compliant)
1-1. Snarriet
The Never-Ending Road by laventadorn (hands down my favorite Snarriet, I love it to the point that I’m translating this >500k fic)
2. Snily
Come Once Again and Love Me by laventadorn
The Apprentice by Deborah Peters (abandoned since 2011, but still worth a read)
3. Snape mentors Harry fic
Moment of Impact by suitesamba
Better Be Slytherin by jharad17 (abandoned at Year 1, Slytherin Harry)
Far Beyond a Promise Kept by oliver.snape
4. Snamione
Pet Project by Caeria
Pride of Time by Anubis Ankh
5. Snack (*I’d like to read more of this ship, but can’t really find a lot...)
Walking the Monochrome by emilywaters1976 (post-First War AU)
6. Quite a bit OOC Snape but still enjoyable gen fics
The Wendell That Wasn’t by opalish (canon compliant one-shot, ghost Snape crack fic; OOC in that I believe Snape would never become a ghost, but the characterization’s hilariously Snape)
It Falls to the Young by Viskii (it’s really not the Snape as we know him, but it’s a fun read, and I have a secret fondness for the young Snape-befriending-the-Marauders-somehow-despite-their-rocky-start story; wish there’s more out there)

Fandom Trumps Hate 2023
fandomtrumpshate on Tumblr
2023 will be my fourth Fandom Trumps Hate auction. I’ve found it the most difficult writing I’ve done but I have absolutely loved the experience of working with the successful bidders and in some cases, pushing out of my comfort zone. I’m offering either Harry Potter or Sherlock, any pairing, but my work is mainly Harry/Severus (snarry or severitis) and John/Sherlock. I’ve also done cross-overs and they’re always some of my favorites, and have written other pairings in both fandoms.
The results of 2017 was Where You Hang Your Heart, a rework and expansion of an earlier story in Sherlock’s point of view. In 2019, a name I recognized from the Sherlock fandom won my services and to my surprise requested snarry. That work was also a retelling of a popular story in that fandom, this time from Severus’ point of view. PuesdoPrince follows ProtoSnape to complete a series. And in 2020, I delivered Queer Like Us, a fic about Harry and Severus reconnecting after a long time apart and a lot of growth and change. It
So - 2023. You can find me under the suitesamba tag on the auction tag page - there’s a Tumblr but the auction is officially hosted on Dreamwidth. This link should get you to my auction page. Bidding starts on March 1st and ends March 5th but you can browse now. You can check out the pub dates and lengths of my previous auction fics on AO3 - I’ll start working with you right away but want to take the writing time the story needs.
Suitesamba’s Fandom Trumps Hate 2023 Auction Page
And if not on my services - please support the auction in some way. The supported causes are all timely and critical and this year I’ll match the winning bid and donate to the cause of the bidder’s choice.

Button ProtoSnap
The fact that this was really simple and I somehow made it extremely difficult to understand because I overthink things way too much, makes me want to smack myself. Anyway let me proceed to tell you about this new project that I was having trouble with and eventually completed. From my previous post I gave a general definition (link to website's definition) of what a protosnap was. However, I was working with a different component of the protosnap (buzzer), but for this project I was asked to modify the comments for the LED to be off when the button is pressed, otherwise it is on.
int buttonPin = 7; // button is connected to pin 7 int ledPin = 13; // LED's connected to pin 13 int buttonStatus; // variable we'll use to store the button's status void setup() { pinMode(buttonPin, INPUT); // Initialize the buttonPin as input pinMode(ledPin, OUTPUT); // The LED is an output } void loop() { /* First read the status of the button HIGH = button is NOT pressed LOW = button IS pressed */ buttonStatus = digitalRead(buttonPin); if (buttonStatus == LOW) { digitalWrite(ledPin, HIGH); // If the button's pressed turn the LED on } else { digitalWrite(ledPin, LOW); // Otherwise, turn the LED off } }
Above is the original coding, as you can see HIGH represents when the button is not pressed and LOW represents when the button is pressed. You also notice the comments where both HIGH and LOW are and what it is responsible for doing. So in order for me to modify the code to do what I want, I simply switched where HIGH and LOW are and changed the comments to reflect the reaction.
Below is the modified version.
int buttonPin = 7; // button is connected to pin 7 int ledPin = 13; // LED's connected to pin 13
int buttonStatus; // variable we'll use to store the button's status
void setup() { pinMode(buttonPin, INPUT); // Initialize the buttonPin as input pinMode(ledPin, OUTPUT); // The LED is an output }
void loop() { /* First read the status of the button HIGH = button is NOT pressed LOW = button IS pressed */ buttonStatus = digitalRead(buttonPin); if (buttonStatus == LOW) { digitalWrite(ledPin, LOW); // If the button's pressed turn the LED off } else { digitalWrite(ledPin, HIGH); // Otherwise, turn the LED on } }
