something to get off my chest..

I’ve read about this a bit, and went through some thoughts from others and I’d like to say something. Can fanfiction writers be a bit more inclusive to POC(I’m going to be focusing on black readers, as that’s where I can say what I feel)  and such. The writing from the people I read from is fine, so if you’re one of my fanfic writing moots, don’t worry, you’re in the clear :). It’s just a general PSA type thing of me saying “Please include us, I feel out of place and misrepresented and with writing and fanfiction, I kind of feel left out when I see certain things in a fic or whatever it may be.” Been bothering me a little bit.

Examples Where Inclusion Could be Added:

“Ran fingers through S/O’s hair” As a black girl, I’d love for this phrase to be real, and to happen, but sometimes it’s just not happening. I’ve got tighter textured hair, and I’d enjoy for a character to put their hand on my hair, or take a small piece and scrunch a tiny curl.

“When the character puts their hair into a ponytail” Along with the running their fingers through my hair thing, a lot of the time, my hair won’t be going into a ponytail and stay slick and whatnot. Improvements could be to put their hair into an afro puff, or putting a headwrap on, etc.

“Pale, white as snow skin” This one’s a bit self-explanatory. Now, I will acknowledge vitiligo, and those who have it. That, as well as some POC having albinism. Those scenarios do count, but I can only speak for myself. Compare black skin to the sun, and how it shines beautifully in the golden rays. Also, don’t refer to black/brown skin tones as chocolate, caramel, or mocha. There’s tons of other things, other than food, to compare it to, or to just call it beautiful because it is.

“Discoloration” A lot of the time, POC might have discoloration of the skin, and uneven skin patches, and yes, I know this isn’t just a black people thing, white people may experience it too, but that’s where that comes in. Mention discoloration, or make it a topic to shed light on in a fic.

“Silky smooth hair” My hair is not silky smooth, and it may never be that way. It’s curly, coily, and a lot of the times, dry. It’s rough to the touch, and the curls have their own feel and pattern. Perhaps, you could shed some light on how the hair feels. Do NOT compare it to sheep wool, carpet, anything rough like that. It’s demeaning and rude. Instead, make it seem perfectly imperfect, our hair isn’t going to be like fresh sheets.

“They had long hair, reaching (blank) length.” A lot of our hair IS NOT LONG. Or what is considered long in this white beauty standard. Yes, my hair stretches to my back, but does it look like that upon immediate arrival? No, no it doesn’t. Try mentioning different hair styles that the reader might have it in, such as braids, a hijab, headwrap, afro puffs, cornrows.

How Curly Hair Dries. I am acknowledging that fact that any texture of hair can and does grow out of any person’s head, regardless of race. However, I’m mentioning it. If the fic is talking about it raining, or them getting water on their hair, or being in a pool. Mention how their hair droops then shrinks, because curly hair does that. How it may get frizzy, puffy, all that jazz.

“Character straightened their hair, character did French braids, character did hair crown, character curled their hair” Now, I know black hair does a lot, but we do NOT straighten our hair every day. It takes too long, and it does too much heat damage. We can do French braids, but they don’t come loose immediately. They’re protective styles for a reason. We also can do hair crowns, but like I said, it’s going to be a STRUGGLE. Mention other hair styles, and other black hairstyles, and what the character does or doesn’t do to it everyday. One day it might be moisturizer day, or wash day. They could do a wash and go, or leave it down, braid it, twist out, braid out. Whatever it may be, add it in.

SFW Fic Ideas That Include These Things:

The character’s S/O, or boyfriend, let me say for this example, Nathan Young (teehee) asks if he can help on a wash day, and they approve. He also has curly hair, but it’s a different texture to most black hair, and mention that too. How he might ask for help, try not to hurt them, gets confused at how much product they might have to use. (A LOT).

The character’s S/O or boyfriend, thus again, using Nathan as an example, asking how they might style it, if he can help. He learns how to braid, twist, add in coconut oil, moisturizer, all that. Combing correctly and not RIPPING their hair out,

The character’s S/O or boyfriend helping with hot oil treatments, and heating everything up, parting hair, adding things where they need to be added.

The character might be having a really rough hair day, and they help out, combing through it.

The character might get turned down at work because of how their hair is styled, angst, comfort, fluff. Add in how they feel, how it made them feel, all those negative emotions.

Character got called an “angry black woman”, and how she deals with it, how her S/O deals with it.

Character got turned down at work simply because of the color of their skin, mention the angst (and the fight their S/O had with the company.)

Character wants their hair played with, but carefully. Mention how their S/O twists their finger around their hair, trying not to hurt them. Calling their hair beautiful, a crown, precious, angelic.

Character has their hair touched unwillingly in public, they have a break down, comfort, fluff. How they retort in a respectful way.

Character educating their S/O on what’s okay and what’s not okay to do with their hair, how to care for it, how to touch it, when to touch it.

HEADWRAPSSSSS. Character’s head wrap is always coming off at night, S/O giggles, helps them wrap their hair, always looks forward to helping them find it in the morning.

S/O has never been with a “black girl” before, mention how wrong it is to say something like that, how insensitive it is.

Character goes on a date, a person says “I’ve never been with a black girl/chocolate girl.” before, and storms out, person is ignorant. Mention how they go back to future S/O (friends to lovers yessss) and cry over it “I’ll never treat you like that.”

NSFW mentions below the cut.

“Character touched their pink nipples.” My nipples are NOT pink, thank you very much. They’re much darker than our skin colors. Mention whoever you maybe writing about slowly circling their tongue around the (specific color) nipples, don’t just default to pink

“Character touched their pink pussy; saw their pink pussy.” All vaginas are NOT made equal, let me tell you. Vaginas are different colors, depending on your skin tone. A lot of the time, with POC, they fade into pink, and the actual inside of the vagina is pink, but not the surrounding area. The skin around the pubic mound darkens in color, and the closer it reaches the vagina, the darker it may be, due to discoloration, skin rubbing, etc.

STRETCH MARKS. This one isn’t race specific, every color of skin can have stretch marks, BUT the color does differ. As a person who has stretch marks, mostly near my nether regions, the darker the skin they’re on, the darker they’ll be. Try adding in sprinkles of stretch marks for ALL of your characters.

Body Shape. Now, there are curvier white people, and I do acknowledge that fact, but with black people, there is a certain body type that a lot of us have. Big titties, fat ass, big hips, big thighs. NOW, black people and POC are sexualized and fetishized a fuck ton, and I’m tired of it. If our body types are mentioned, and it’s a specifically black or POC character, don’t make it all that they’re about, especially when writing about smut. Yes, they can be thicc, and beautifully so, but don’t oversexualize that about them.

“Character grabbed on to their hair, pulling it tight.” I don’t like my hair being touched without permission, forget the pulling. Have it where the character might ask permission to touch their hair, even if they’re getting down and dirty.

NSFW Fic Ideas That Include These Things

Character wants their pussy licked, and their S/O mentions how beautiful their pussy is, how beautiful their skin is.

Character and S/O see each other nakie for the first time, mention their pubic hair (if they have it, make it inclusive). Mention stretch marks, how they feel as their S/O/ drags their fingers, tongue across them. Tongue dragging against their nipples (mention color).

Character doesn’t want their hair touched during intercourse. Mention the talk about it, potentially angst if S/O accidentally touches it or unintentionally upsetting them about it.

Character does wash day, turns into something dirty, grinding, close contact.

Character is doing their hair, S/O gets turned on by how careful she is, how her body is so still, how she has no care about how her breast spills out from her bra.

For your worry of blandness, you can easily make food flavorful without eating what affects your stomach. Soy sauce, honey/maple syrup, mustard, garlic, ginger and so on. (hopefully some fo those are ok by you) Replacement cooking is something I think everyone should learn. Let’s take an example, You didn’t mention garlic so I’ll assume that’s ok for you to eat. You can use chilled oil and garlic and blend it together with a bit of salt to make a creamy sauce for pasta or potatoes. It’s super flavorful (although a bit higher in fat that of a tomato sauce equivalent but you can balance meals around it)

Overall, you should look at eating a varied diet, balancing what you eat for macro and micro nutrients while still avoiding the foods that affect your reflux disease. Make sure to make allowances for vitamins that you may have less of due to your reflux disease. And, no, bribery will not change my mind when it comes to the safety of your child, and calling my manager is not going to change anything. I will suggest a ride that your child can ride if you are polite. PS: if you threaten me, I will call security on your ass and you will be removed/banned. Being banned because you threatened a ride op for not letting your toddler on a ride sounds stupid, doesn’t it?

3. If we tell you to put your cell phone away, then put it away. This one really peeves me, because I had to stop a ride TWICE in one hour because of someone refusing to put away her phone. In my intro spiel before letting on guests and right before I start the ride, I tell them to have their phones put away. If I have to tell you more than once during the ride to put it away, I stop the ride and guests get mad at YOU for not listening to the rules, not me for doing my job. If you’re on a rollercoaster and a ride op sees you with a phone, you’ll either be stopped on the lift hill and have your phone confiscated, or we’ll confiscate your phone as soon as you return to the station. Be smart and KEEP IT AWAY.

4. Just because we take safety seriously doesn’t mean we’re completely serious people. If there’s a bit of downtime, I try to make conversation. When I work crowd and have to keep the platform from crowding, I will ask what your favorite ride is, what you are most excited to ride, or if you come here often. When I’m on spiel and I ask how your ride was and you make a joke about it, I promise I will laugh. Everyone loves when people laugh at their jokes.

5. ANY employee will be happy to help you with any questions you have. I know the layout of my park like the back of my hand because I’ve been going there since I was a kid. If you ask me where the nearest bathroom is, how to get to a certain ride, or for a recommendation for food, I can point it out exactly and give you details. Plus, I’m a nerd and know trivia about all the rides, so if you ask me when my ride (or any ride) was built, I can tell you. 6. If you see an employee enter the bathroom, please wait to ask a question. We may seem like superhumans by being in the hot sun all day, but we also need to pee. Give us a minute to empty our bladders and then we’ll help you.

7. If you recognize an employee on their day off or when they’re on break, feel free to chat! I love making friends with the regulars in the park. I promise you are not going to bother me if you say hi, ask how I am, and what I’m up to today. Be mindful of who you want to hug though. I may be a hugger, but there are some people who are not comfortable.

#TBT Recipe 'Steaks - Just Like the Ones My Dad Grilled in Alarmingly Short Cut-Offs'

I could smell the charcoal through the acrid cloud of methamphetamines mom was cooking in the kitchen. That meant dad, fresh from his afternoon snack of scotch and more scotch was on the deck in impossibly short, frayed cut offs grilling meat.

Generally we had hamburgers and hotdogs as it was the 70s and everyone was broke. But on occasion, we would have steak. Usually when company was in town. Especially if they had to fly on a cigarette-smoke filled airplane to get to us, steak would definitely be served.

My favorite foods have and always will be condiments. Hamburgers meant ketchup, hotdogs meant mustard and steak meant A-1. I would fill up my wading pool and roll in A-1 if I could. Ketchup too. Mustard not so much, as it seemed the hardest to clean.

ABC had this PSA going around, "Don't Drown Your Food". A generally obedient child, I would normally listen to the Bod Squad's advice but with my drug making mom not noticing me shot-gunning ketchup packets and half cocked dad letting me have my way with the Heinz, I wasn't let some animated assholes ruin the party.

My condiment love has remained strong, but also expanded. Shockingly, I no longer put A-1 on my steak. Not that that's bad. I mean, it's not KETCHUP on a steak. What of deranged, moronic, infantile, sack of putrid crap, orange-tinged, tiny handed world leader would do that?

Eye roll's from steak purists didn't stop my A-1 love. I just learned how to cook it properly. Plus, MOST people's palates grow more sophisticated as they get older and they do not need to dip every single solitary thing in Ranch dressing, orange world leaders aside.

There are a ton of methods to cooking steaks all better than the next says the internets.  This is a skillet/oven method as I live in LA and the only bar-b-que we have is Korean and the do it inside.  Plus, I can't match my dad's 70's cut off swagger.

Enjoy, with or without A-1!

INGREDIENTS:

2 beef steaks at least 1-inch thick

2 tsp olive oil

1 tsp salt

1 tsp pepper

2 Tbs softened butter

1-2 cloves of garlic minced

DIRECTIONS:

Remove steaks for the fridge and let them sit at room temp for at least 30 minutes - closer the meat is to the final cooking temp, the more even the cook.

Rub each side with olive oil to coat (DON'T put oil in the pan or it will BURN like my mother's meth when she fell asleep while watching 'Another World'.

Mixed together salt and pepper in your palms and rub both sides of the meats.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Preheat a heavy, oven-safe skillet over high heat until it's smoking hot.

Sear the steaks 2-3 minutes per side. If the steak has a side of fat, turn the steaks on their sides and render the fat by searing it for 2-3 minutes -- please don't skip this step unless you want to be like that lazy, blond bitch Cindy who nearly ENDED my LIFE with her non-rendered, fatty steaks. Plus, there was no A-1.

Slide the skillet with steaks into the oven to finish cooking. Generally, just a few minutes, but use a thermometer to test the temp and remove them when the are with in 5 degrees of the desired doneness. 130 degrees for med-rare. Anything else, Google it.

While steaks are cooking, get your butter on. Combine butter and garlic in a small bowl.

Remove steaks from the oven, take out of the skillet, let rest and top with 1 Tbs of the garlic butter. Let rest 10 minutes.

Alternatively, take steaks out of the skillet, melt the butter and garlic with the meat juices and pour over the steaks.

Duke's Travel Center and Downward Dogs

Whaaaaat a day so far! We’ve made it to Canton, TX. We’re sitting outside of Duke’s Travel Center, hanging out In the Texas heat, digesting our massive amounts of BBQ and other delicious food. I had pulled pork and sausage with sides of green beans and button mushrooms. Everything was obvious drowned in butter and hot BBQ sauce, so to minimize metabolic disaster, I took half of it with me to save for later. Maggie May (the fluff pup) is certainly interested in my food endeavors; from that protein shake this morning, I’ve had a 100 calorie pack of cashews, a tuna pack, and now BBQ. What I wouldn’t give for some Chipotle right now! Or maybe Dead End BBQ. Well, maybe after I digest.

Cindy and I had a great talk about what I do for US Xpress. We haven’t solved the biggest piece of the problem, though - communication channels. Cindy likes the idea of using the USX driver app to convey nutritional / activity / stress mgmt/ sleep health messaging, which seems like the most intuitive place for it to live until drivers have company email addresses. We talked about the big impacts of small dietary changes (like unsweet tea + lemonade vs sweet tea + lemonade) and we talked about the importance of preventive screenings and getting in to get a well check every year.

So, communicating with drivers. They have a few methods of communication now, but they’re bombarded with so many things, it’s hard to get that audience captive! Cindy knows a lot about nutrition, too - she can talk intelligently about carbs and healthy fats and sugar, it’s quite impressive! I will definitely take her thoughts about wanting to join Planet Fitness back with me. I was talking to Anytime Fitness about a corporate discount…that may be where we start since PFs are all franchised out…but who says we can’t be innovative?

We stopped at a truck stop outside of Shreveport and I did my very first “10 minute trucker tune-up” body weight exercise sequence.

It looks like: 3 RFT (rounds for time): - 20 air squats with alternating lateral leg lifts (10 each side) - 20 downward dog abs (start with one leg extended as in 3 legged dog, bring knee in to touch right tricep, extend leg and bring knee in to touch left tricep back and forth 10x total, switch legs and do 10 on the other side) - 10 knee push ups to side planks (5 each side, alternating sides)

Quick, easy, effective with all of the different muscle groups, and, juuuust a bit of cardio. All you need is a mat. Danny George taught me that, once your mat touches the parking lot or drive area of a Travel Center, be sure to pick it up by the middle and keep the surface exposed to the ground touching each other, not the outside world. Boys and girls, the ground at a truck stop or rest area has most likely been urinated on.

So we’ve been chatting and driving and noticing the sights. Texas is getting flatter and flatter and less colorful as we traverse the highway and head further into the desert. We are slated to go to Irving, which indeed is not Laredo. It’s Lorraine’s (Jake’s mama’s) birthday this weekend and I need to be back by Friday to go visit her on Saturday! So, we’re dropping our puppy chow in Irving, right outside of Dallas. Not Laredo. Kinda disappointed, but kinda relieved. Laredo, or so I’m told, is like a whooole other country.
