It was PSI all along? That's the big twist we were waiting for?! -Mother series headcanon
If there's one thing that the Mother series never explained, is what actually PSI is.
Not how the humans got reports of it, but what it is is general.
This headcanon sprouted from this exact thought, and with it, its able to tie in pretty much all the events of the three games.
In this headcanon of mine, PSI in an energy that can be found in every little thing, big and small, long and shot, alive or "not alive". This energy is like a sort of extra atom, like a neutron, or an electron, try to imagine a world identical to ours, but along with them, there's the atom of 'PSI'.
Unlike the other atoms tho, the properties of PSI are near limitless. It can create stuff out of nowhere by rearranging itself or mimic other atoms, bend space and time, and even give 'life' to what, in our eyes, doesn't have it, which explains the talking rocks, the Territorial Oaks, those damn Ramblin' Evil 'Shrooms, and so on and so forth.
Now: Celestial corps, like planets, such as The Earth, have a huge amount of PSI in them, and makes them work like an enormous organism with a subconcious, collective mind. These corps can, sometimes, reincarnate into a being, a guardian of sorts, an entity that can use the PSI of the entire celestial corp for itself.
This is what Ness and Giygas both are: Guardians/Reincarnations of their home planet, I'll explain the difference between them, and most importantly, WHAT HAPPENED to Giygas, in a future post.
Now, to the next point I'm gonna make, which can be pretty trippy and nonsensical, I'll use this:
Remember that one time, at the end of Mother 1, where Ninten is able to communicate with his dead Great-Grandpa? Good, how did Ninten manage to do such a thing?
When something, or someone "dies", their PSI is 'reused', in the sense that, what was once of the previous entity's PSI is now on the thing the entity died on. To make a long story short, its like George's tombstone contained George's 'soul'. This fact also explains the visions of Poo during the Mu training, and how he is supposedly able to communicate with the previous rulers of Dalaam.
Now imagine this, to an even bigger scale. Imagine this, but with Ness. Here's how I tie the events of Mother 3 to the previous games.
For how absolutely insane it sounds, Ness is the Dark Dragon. After the events of Mother 2, and the supposed things that happened after, eventually The Earth ended up in an abyssmal state, full of pollution, destruction, and more. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal for The Earth, it doesn't care about humans or any other species in the long run.
But then Ness comes in the picture.
This little boy, now a man with an extremely long lifespan, who has cosmic knowledge about his planet, gifts humanity, and all the other living beings with them, of another chance.
In the shape of a huge Dragon, he seals himself with the Needles underground, forming new, and completely pure geological formations identical to the ones before, and after humanity and the other creatures sealed on the White Ship to survive, he let them come down again, at the promise that this time, they won't fuck up.
And from there, starts Mother 3.
I have no idea what else to write but hope you enjoyed this rambling of mine, expect new things from the next rambling about PSI, because it will be about Magicant, probably.
Thanks for coming to my Ted-Talk.

Paula for the ask game, if you'd like!
First impression:
Tumblr media
wow they sure made the girl character a pink little damsel (despite her badass powers) and called it a day huh. ok
Impression now:
Tumblr media
wow i can take the girl character and develop whatever i want about her and -- oh shit - oops - haha whoops - now she's my favorite
Favorite moment: Every time she uses PK Freeze. But really, I'm very sentimental about the brief period between Twoson and Threed where it's just Ness and Paula traveling together. Paula makes a friend she can be herself with. Ness makes a friend after braving the big scary world all by himself. They're probably a little awkward and uncertain of each other at first, but they quickly come to admire each others' strengths!! Combat feels so fresh and exciting once you finally have a party member! They both have to learn to work together with a fellow PSI user, and it's really sweet.
Idea for a story: I don't really have more Paula stories on the brain rn. Whatever I do next with Intermission AU though, I wanna develop her friendship with Claus some more… They're both book-smart and snarky, he's one of very few people who can keep up with her wit. She only knows the half of what he's been through, but she looks out for him on the downlow. Especially in light of his bad experiences with Porky (Paula helped Ness through his fallout with Porky too, she's kind of in a unique position to provide some levelheaded advice & support). And they've both got unresolved anger with their family members. Their playfully pretentious nerd banter might easily give way to some heartfelt & heavy discussions. I feel like one of these days I could cook up somethin interesting. Intermission Senior Year arc where Paula finally stands up to her megalomaniac mom, while Claus cheers from the sidewalk like "yeah paula, you tell her!! yolo, dude! i got your back!"
Unpopular opinion: A lot of fan content I see & read will either sideline her or just, not flesh her out very much beyond Yeah She Sure Is The Girl. :( Itoi left the EarthBound party members relatively underdeveloped on purpose, hoping players would fill in the blanks to their hearts' content. Paula can be anything or anyone, and can have really interesting dynamics with her other party members! I just think her potential is often underutilized.
Favorite relationship: She's Ness' best friend!! A smart pretty popular girl befriends a little fat boy with average grades n' no connections beyond his hometown! And against all expectations, it turns out they get along brilliantly! He helps her loosen up & let go of her perfectionism, she helps him overcome his insecurities & become a more confident person! Ness really really needed someone to trust as his friendship with Porky crumbled, and Paula was right there the whole time. I think they have lots of silly goofy fun together - they'll dance and do karaoke and take joke photos at national monuments. I have a funny little headcanon that they tried dating in high school, quickly realized they like just being friends much better, and went on as if nothing happened. And another, that they teach each other their PSI techniques. Healing doesn't come naturally to Paula, and offense doesn't come naturally to Ness, but they're patient and perseverant and they figure it out over time.
Favorite headcanon: My girl Paula is academia pilled to comedic degrees. She's obsessed with Virginia Woolf. She feels a spiritual kinship with The Queen's Gambit. She daydreams about being a college professor. When she watches movies she calls them "films," and you'd better believe she's taking notes.

If you’re down, I’d love to hear your headcanons and theories on Paula.
Ooh, Paula, ain't you an interesting one? I have some interesting thoughts on her about how she seems to be a good in-between of Ana and Kumatora, like, in the sense that she's Ana on the outside but Kumatora on the inside (at least in the American release which I prefer due to making her more distinct from Ana). Lemme explain.
Like Poo, but in a slightly different way, I feel like she has a lot of expectations on how to act. Her Pray command suggests she was raised religiously, she often has to work with children and is well liked by them, she is known throughout Twoson for her powers and seemingly heralded as a paragon. So she's gotta be a real saint, right? But the moment you actually get to know her as Ness, she's clearly not this perfect delicate flower Twoson and her roles make you think.
Sure, her defense isn't the highest, but she has the strongest range of offensive PSI in the game and clearly has her moments of sass, "If you didn't come, I would have had to try to bust out of here." and more notably, a somewhat rare dialogue I'm probably just paraphrasing if you speak to her in the same scene but with a full inventory so she can't give you a Franklin Badge: "Are you crazy? Do you want to be fried by lightning?".
I think her frilly look, then, is partially based on societal expectations, rather than who she really is. It's not that she doesn't like pink and cute and frilly, she seems to love her teddy bear given it's the only thing accompanying her at first! But she's more complicated that she looks: it's not the style that bothers her, it's the behaviors enforced on her that do (probably by her dad, who seems to coddle her a bit, but maybe I'm reading too deep into this).
Yes, I believe she is genuinely sweet and caring; she's the mom friend who wants to maintain the order if things get too out of hand and can't completely ditch how she was raised. She does care for others as it looks like she does, but her true nature would be more neutral or chaotic good than lawful good around anyone who isn't the Polestar Preschool kids or her parents. Her lines of snark and heavy hitting attacks that she knows are heavy hitting suggest that she's is more rough and tumble than some would expect her to be, but she really doesn't care around the Chosen Four, where she gets to live as herself for herself.
Oh and about her snark, despite her sweet looks and attitude when she likes you, she can be quite tough and sharp tongued if she doesn't - and it takes a lot to get on her bad side but if you do...
Oh boy.
She reasonably so loathes Porky despite Ness's reassurance that "he's just confused" for obvious reasons (Mr. Carpainter *cough*) and will take any chance to roast him. She normally has mercy as she did for Monotoli but no... Porky just went beyond the moral-event horizon for her. Fair game to roast.

See, when Ness entered a pizzeria he was expecting to get a pizza with his stupidly large budget and not the sad reality of how it feels to work food service. You know, with the guy being asleep and all. Part of him was tempted to simply casually turn around and leave the man to it but. One. He was a young boy who wanted pizza. There's not much he could do, but he didn't want to. Be rude? You know. So, what's better than being rude in Ness's book?
Ness Tried Healing α!
Oh, healing PSI to naturally wake the guy up. On a guy who's probably never been exposed to PSI. Maybe. He doesn't know, he doesn't want to read this dude's mind honestly.
What's better than being rude? Well, using some PSI on some random you've never met before is definitely... a choice. And unfortunately, it isn't a good one for the chef. His eyes do snap open, yes, but the young boy who wants pizza gets to witness a man's body contort and lose shape.
It was indeed a bit of a horror show, his skin twisting like putty and muscles bulging out, as if there were no bones for them to attach to. But it only lasts a few seconds before the afflicted man seems to snap back to normal.
Tumblr media
He stares wordlessly at the child standing before him, a hand gripping his chest as his nerves finally stop firing pain into his head. It takes about half a minute for Pino to gather his wits. Okay. He's at work. He literally cannot afford to miss a sale right now. So...
Tumblr media
"... If that didn't-a scare you off... can I help you?"

I like the idea that Ninten and Claus teach eachother PSI. Ninten is master of defensive and supportive PSI, meanwhile Claus basically knows none of it, so Ninten makes an effort to teach Claus some, starting with Lifeup. They both get so excited when Claus finally manages to use Lifeup for the first time, even though it only healed a little.
At the same time, Claus tries teaching offensive PSI to Ninten. Ninten develops quite the insecurity over the fact he has no offensive PSI and it reinforces the idea in his mind that he's not special when put up against Ness, Lucas and Claus. He sees them as these grabe, brilliant chosen fighters whilst he just feels like a boy. A mundane, normal boy. And Claus, though he insists that Ninten is the furthest thing from mundane, and he does believe Ninten to be one of the most amazing and unique people he's ever met, wants to help him learn some if it'll help Ninten's self confidence. He can't teach PK Love, of course, because that PSI is literally ingrained within himself and Lucas, but he imagines that the feeling and the steps behind PK Love could perhaps be used to awaken Ninten's own unique PSI, whatever that could be.

Giggles and kicks my legs. Soooo .. how about YOU make a headcanon post
OKAY!!!! i actually have. like a. insanely long list for my mother headcanons and have an uncomplete Google docs document on them because im insane but i will make it as short as i can by only taking about mother 2 LMAOOO so imma just add a silly read more thingy here because i am about to info dump so hard
Imma go character by character because ITS JUST CLEANER...
first off silly baseball child ness
Because I'm silly like that I woke up one day and decided he was trans masc. if ness or just any male protagonist in media (looking at you link) could make money out of the amount of people that made headcanons of him not being cis I imagine there'd be alot of cash coming in
I like to think of him as half-latino and knowing spanish because WHY NOT!!! and since every single latinoamerican breathes and cherishes goku HE NEEDS TO BE A DRAGON BALL FAN he would not be accurate latinoamerican representation IF HE WASNT A DRAGON BALL FAN!!!
Out of the whole group I imagine he tries to use PSI as little as possible in his daily life once the whole journey is over, for he is more comfortable living as a normal kid. WILL NOT HESITATE TO USE HEALING POWERS IF NECCESARY but otherwise avoids it (except telepathy on animals because i have this funny thought where he has unintentionally used telepathy his entire life and thats how he knows what animals are saying BUT THOUGHT THIS WAS NORMAL??? once he figures out its not a normal thing he avoids doing it as much with people but he cannot live without knowing what the dawg be saying...
the airhead in the group. he is mostly gut oriented instead of going by brains his brain mgiht as well be a burger
ALSO THE LOUD ONE a very empathetic and easy going boy that gets easily excited about everything and just likes having fun. which means every time he gets a semblance of a negative emotion he will proceed to numb it down and ignore it causing him to just accumulate it😰 LIKE HOW HE HAS TO BEAT DIFFERENT CREATURES AND ENEMIES in his magicant they appear and look down at him for hurting them WHICH MIGHT BE HIM FEELING GUILTY BY THE FACT HE HAS TO DO THAT AND I IMAGINE HE CAN ONLY PULL HIMSELF TO DO SO BY NUMBING THE GUILT DOWN... he's just like look lets lets just get this done😞 what goes on with Pokey ending up on Giygas's side also applies to this but i will not go on detail. because I am writing fanfiction about it and rather not spoiil it😊😊😊😊
the baseball fan ever that practices daily without missing a single day and basically drags Pokey alongside him
and since. i am NORMAL... he's an ENTJ 7w8. i have spent endless hours doing personality tests for these kids i am so normal about them
he has a crush on Paula (which she returns) but is too flustered to admit this so he pretends he is not catching on to her VERY VISIBLE HINTS (she enjoys getting him flustered shes silly like that) because he's nervous about it💀💀💀
anyway PAULA TIME!!!! i am insane so i have provided some backstory for her
I imagine that she awakened her PSI pretty early on and is very gifted around it, and since it is so rare she became very popular in the media at a young age and is essentially a celebrity child. She thought it was very fun initially but she feels pressured to keep a perfect image of herself for she is considered to be a role model which painted an image of someone that wasn't her. She feels very upset about this nowadays and has tightly held onto what is important to her and her true self as to not lose it in attempting to be someone else. She basically has some anger issues out of this because she has gotten used to people not really respecting her boundaries and not being very interested in who she actually is
SHE'S STILL REALLY CARING SHE GENUINELY ENJOYS HELPING OTHERS AND IS THE ONE KEEPING THE TEAM MORALE IN BETWEEN THE FOUR even when she tends to forget taking care of herself sometimes
so yeah she isnt really amused when she's kidnapped SHE JUST GENERALLY HAS LIGHT REACTIONS TO THINGS GOING SOUTH BECAUSE SHE BASICALLY KINDA EXPECTS THAT? despite how much optimism she spreads around she's quite the pessimist (though never voices those thoughts) so she feels very drawn in when Ness is actually genuinely optimistic about everything
loves cute things so much she needs every single big plushie she finds IMMEDIATELY. kirby merch hoarder
generally a sweetheart but very bold and feisty not as much as Kumatora is but she is
if she was in the modern era she'd be a gamer and live breathe minecraft she would be the type of person that gently explains things to her friends on one side but yells when a random stranger in her team is playing horribly
really excited over her frying pan she would have gotten a bat if she didn't think itd be cool if she could use her frying pan as both a weapon and something to warm food up in. like SHE WILL USE IT IN ANY CHANCE POSSIBLE TO FEEL COOL like "Yeah ... give me that cold slice of pizza imma put in the pan . ..." pk fire some random oil she keeps around for thiw specific purpose and there it is it makes her so happy
AS I PREVIOUSLY MENTIONRD SHES VERY STRAIGHTFOWARD ABOUT HER FEELINGS FOR NESS EVERYONE KNOWS IT SHE IS NOT TRYING TO HIDE IT AT ALL but does not directly confess because she likes teasing Ness. she finds it amusing when he gets flustered about it and pretends he isn't catching on
ESFP 2w3 hehehehehehehe
now Jeff he's my favorite out of the four so his is probably going to be stupidly way longer because he's silly like that
not the usual type of shy who hides from people and stutters a lot I IMAGINE HE JUST GETS REALLY AWKWARD AND SPEAKS AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE AND ENDS UP SOUNDING REALLY FORMAL BY ACCIDENT. He will respond to you just in very few words if some stranger suddenly starts talking to him he basically freezes up and fights internally to even say a word because he does not know how to do conversations
He's very knowledgeable in many different things and if you ask him about anything he'll answer VERY NONCHALANTLY AND SHORTLY AS IF HE DOES NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND THE SUBJECT WHEN HE IN FACT, DOES. HE SIMPLY IS NOT INTERESTED. but then you bring up inventions and guns and he will provide you a full rambling session with visual examples test runs different things to reference to for different concepts he's mentioning and every single minute detail. THERE HE ACTUALLY GETS EXCITED LIKE HE ISN'T SHY AT ALL THERE
cannot for his life comprehend social cues or idioms he takes things very literally and doesn't assume there's any hidden meaning HE'S BETTER AT THINGS THAT ARE LOGICALLY ANSWERED THAN ANYTHING SOCIAL. so yes Tony can accidentally drop a hint that he's crushing on him and DESPITE JEFF FEELING THE SAME WAY, he'll be like hm thanks tony cool I'm sure that is a very best friend thing to say i do not think there are any romantic implications here....
has an inferiority complex over the fact people credit his skills to be coming from his father (who he basically HARDLY KNOWS OR REMEMBERS SEEING PHYSICALLY BEFORE THE PROPHECY) and not to his own efforts!!! he's constantly compared to him and is expected to have the same amount of genius he does so Jeff tends to overwork himself at times to reach this standard.
has tested million types of coffee to see which one keeps him awake at night the best— but hates coffee! he prefers tea. friends assume he likes coffee because of how mcuh he drinks it he does not
oh yeah as i implied has a big fixation towards inventions and guns. he just thinks they're inteesting as hell he wasn't one to use them he just thought they were rad as hell and he WILL recognize specific ones if shown even a peak of one. he cannot live without being 100% up to date with every single type of gun in existence he needs to know all about them and understand how they work and does elaborate dissections into how they're built
even if shy once comfortable with the rest of the team he actually is one to occasionally tease them and joke around sometimes HE HAS THIS RELATIONSHIP WITH NESS WHERE THEY ARE CONSTANTLY TRYING TO ANNOY EACH OTHER without actually annoying in each other idk how you call it but they just playing around they silly like that
type of person who's face turns red at even the slightest embarassment it just happrns really easily
im not even gonna lie to you he's essentially me irl i needed a character to project myself into so i dont feel bad about not being good at social cues and at anything that is not my main interest
OH YEAH HE'S THE TALLEST HE'S VERY LANKY BUT HE'S THE TALLEST he's confused to be older than he actually is a lot of the time
i almost forgot— ISTP 5w4
NOW POO!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!
Initially took things very seriously and remained stone faced for a while but ironically became the one that made the most jokes out of everything and has a very contagious laugh— he still takes things more seriously than the rest and is the one that keeps everyone focused when it's important but is now able to relax a lot more
REALLY CHARISMATIC. LIKE HE'S AMAZING AT DEALING WITH PEOPLE EVEN IF HE PREFERS SOLITUDE.
loves animals and animals love him once found a dog and was very sad when he couldn't take him along in the journey... HE GENUINELY JUST SITS DOWN AND SPEAKS TO ANIMALS VERY CASUALLY LIKE hello sweet little dog. how are you doing on this fine saturday. awesome😊.. AND DOES MAGIC TRICKS FOR THEM😭😭😭 He's the disney princess of the group animals will just come to him and be nice to him birds sing along to this boy existing AND HE'LL BE LIKE OH, THIS IS NORMAL, while the rest of the group is just dumbfounded by rhat
i think he'd be quite tech illiterate as he spends most of his time concentrating on his training he really didn't pay much mind to technology (he preferred putting time into working on himself instead of wasting it trying to properly understand technology). BUT HE'S DOING HIS BEST HE IS INTRODUCED TO ARCADE GAMES AND THANKS TO FRIENDS BECOMES HOOKED he was a little lost but hes okay
becomes good friends with jeff because both felt like the odd one in the team at some point and come from very different backgrounds than ness and paula did THEYRE GOOD BUDDIES
He speaks multiple languages very well, but since english is not his first language he feels a bit lost sometimes when with friends. So doing his best effort he brings A WHOLE DICTIONARY WITH HIM AT ALL TIMES like these four will find a word not a single one of them knows and Poo will be there like. dont worry guys i got this AND PULLS OUT HIS DICTIONARY😭😭😭😭 DUDE'S READING THE ENTIRE THING TO PROPERLY UNDERSTAND HIS FRIENDS😭😭 picks magazines for english so he doesn't have to ask them every single time he's lost and to keep at the same pace they do
might be noticeable already but POO'S A TOTAL SWEETHEART HE DOES NOT MIND SAYING THE MOST SWEETEST AND CARING WORDS EVER KNOWN TO MAN and is very confused when one of the 4 cries in emotion because his words are very nice. THAT'S JUST NORMAL FOR HIM HE'S JUST LIKE THAT JUST NATURALLY VERY VERY NICE AND KIND no one can beat him on being very nice
Sometimes the only sane one in the group he is silly, but he balances the silly properly he knows when to save the silly for later
talking about him being good with people if you need to distract someone NO PROBLEM and he just does it really well DOES MAGIC TRICKS!!!! he likes doing his silly little tricks it's something he learned on the side from his training he loves seeing how people react to them
oh yeah the shortest and is confused to be younger than he is sometimes when he's the oldest in the group. basically Jeff backwards but Jeff isnt the youngest
...infj 8w9
NOW YOUD BE LIKE DAMN MICHAEL THATS A LOT OF TEXT ALREADY YOU SPENT AN HOUR WRITING THIS (yes its been an hour i think i i dont know ive been writing this since you asked when was it HELP) BUT I AM NOT DONE. I AM NOT DONE!!!
JUST JUST A FEW MORE FOR OTHER PEOPLE ASIDE FROM THE CHOSEN 4 BECAUSE i need an excuse to talk abojt tony he's my favorite favorite I could make an essay on his character
I like to think Tracy is super smart and is so smart that she's a few school grades (whatever you call um idk um school years?) ahead of what she would be for her age for it. EVEN THOUGH SHES LIKE 9 she's smarter than ness thats for sure and she mentions this but he's silly so he still needs to be the cool older brother regardless so he ignores that she's smarter GIRLIE GOT A JOB AND HE WAS LIKE TRACY WHAY ARE YOU DOING ON THE ESCARGO EXPRESS LIKE YOU ARE 9😭😭😭
i dont actually have any particular Pokey headcanon besides him being interested in tech because of mother 3 BECAUSE HE FEELS VERY FLESHED OUT ALREADY AT LEAST TO ME SO I DONT FEEL THE NEED TO DO AN ENTIRE BLOCK OF HEADCANONS FOR HIM I REALLY LIKE HIS CHARACTER THOUGH best i got possibly just enters theory territory instead
AND ABOUT TONY!!! like in the game he's a very earnest and good kid. I imagine he's seen as someone very sociable and easy to get along with to his peers LIKE HE WILL DO ANYTHING TO HELP EVERYONE FEEL INCLUDED and does an extra effort to get Jeff friends and for people to understand and like him like he be taking him to some of his other friends like. THIS IS MY BEST FRIEND!!!!!!! and theyre like Tony rhis is the sevenrh time you introduced him TONY IS THE MAIN REASON JEFF HAS ANY OTHER FRIENDS IN SNOW WOOD
tony sucks at science like really bad he's not good at anything scientific process like and would be bad at remembering them...IF HE DIDN'T TAKE THE EFFORT TO MANUALLY REMEMBER THEM BECAUSE JEFF IS THE ONE TELLING HIM. he be sitting there absorbing all that information and casually mentioning it here and there so Jeff gets really excited about it. ASIDE FROM THAT HE'S ACTUALLY GOOD AT MATH AND IT GAINED HIM A SCHOLARSHIP AT SNOW WOOD IN THE FIRST PLACE WHICH I IMAGINE IS VERY PRESTGIOUS
hes just a very hardworking kid in general THOUGH HE'S VERY CLUMSY AT TIMES. he's seen as the funny guy he cracks out jokes for everyone to laugh at people just generally like him a lot
sprta silly because lil dude is so honest and good natured he has to fight so hard to tell a lie. he's quite naive and easily forgives people WHICH OF COURSE HE'S LIKE 12 OF COURSE HE'S LIKE THAT BUT HE'S MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE
anyway im not makikg thisbany longer its already scary enough I AM SORRY. . .....I DID NOT WANT IT TO BE THIS LONG. . ..im very thankful you asked but ay the same time i feel obligated to ask for forgiveness at how long ive rambled for I just I just love this game I COULD DO MORE BUT NAW💔💔💔

a little bit about... Matilda (Tillie) Scarlette!
HI GUYS ITS ME aren't you guys so happy i'm doing these more and clogging up your dash some more !!!! (just kidding vsb is Fucking awesome and if you don't like it. dandori issue)
so name reveal.... yes her full name is MATILDA... tillie is a nickname sad emoji
anyways... so tillie is the porky au of vsb!! and oh boy... i have some things to say about her. strap in.
so, first i'll explain a little bit about the Empire of the Mind.
the empire is a nice little fascist regime run by a certain mind alien by the name of Gyiyg (giygas au)! it is responsible for the creation of chimeras, among many many other things.
the empire's first ever project was an experiment known as the Onett Project. the onett project was a fake town within the empire's chimera laboratory that housed several of their first chimeras, those being Tessalane Starriy, Niiya Tenni (Franklin), Pollyanna Talj, Zamor Roosevelt (Twinkle), and Matilda Scarlette. these chimeras were/are all young children that were abducted from their homes as babies, alien style. the goal of the onett project was to provide a (fake) "home" for their chimeras so they wouldn't try to escape. this ultimately did not succeed, but that's a conversation for another time.
now, the thing about the empire's chimeras is that they are all humans (or, were humans, rather) that were given either Mindkin dna which gave them PSI (and we will be explaining mindkin later, don't worry), metal/robotic parts, or both. in some cases, their Magicants were also altered (brainwashing basically) (we will also be explaining magicant lore at some point! probably in the same post as mindkin maybe). the chimerization process is very painful and very violating and just. not a good experience
but the thing is, tillie was never chimerized. not like the other onett kids.
no, gyiyg saw potential in her.
she was instead chosen as his Vessel.
so, he entered her magicant and took over as her mindkin. from there, he examined her insecurities, her flaws, her weaknesses. and he used those to slowly manipulate her into becoming a perfect, empty vessel. and he used her so he could have a proper physical form.
now, i know the timeline of vsb makes no sense, but one thing that we're certain about is: the onett project took place around 45 years before the present (we do not know what year the present is). so, you may be wondering.. why are the onett kids still, well, kids?
well, that is because of a very special substance known as Silence! silence is a black liquid that manifests mainly in magicants and is EXTREMELY dangerous/toxic. this shit can and will and has and will continue to kill people. it also has amnestic properties; a large enough dose will completely erase one's most recent memories. physically, it can also stunt one's growth, though this mainly only applies to mindkin.
silence is used very prominently during chimerization. so the presence of silence in the onett chimeras (since they have mindkin dna) sorta stopped them from aging.
but, you may be thinking, tillie wasn't chimerized. so how come she's still a kid?
well, silence was used very frequently on her. every time gyiyg would use her as a vessel, he'd inject silence into her so she'd forget. this eventually built up, and along with stunting her growth, it also broke her magicant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! which is so fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! mental illness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
anyways all this is to say that tillie (and all the onett kids) is chronologically like 55 years old
OK THATS ALL I FEEL LIKE TYPING RN... pleaese read this it took like 3 hours to type. please

Recently I was listening to an Earthbound fan composition about Ness' fight with Giygas. it had two samples. a speech by bray wyatt about the false nature of heroes, and a sample of J. Robert Oppenheimer reciting the Bhagavad Vita.
These two samples made me think a lot about a scene from earthbound, but it wasn't the Giygas fight. I think it was the title that made me think this.
"i am the evil in your heart"
I think this song is about Ness' Nightmare.
And it fit so well.
Ness was picked by Buzz Buzz to destroy Giygas, the strongest PSI user in the universe, because his potential for PSI was also the greatest in the universe.
To unlock this power, he had to use the whole Earth as a conduit for his PSI by absorbing the power of the eight Your Sanctuary locations around the world. Doing so would raise his PSI to the level of Giygas, allowing him to vanquish them once and for all.
So here we are. At the center of the Sea of Eden, the heart of Magicant.
And it's at this point that this really gets to me.
Ness is the strongest organism alive at this point. His power is literally matched only by the greatest evil in the universe.
And if Giygas turned evil because he was corrupted by his own strength...
This is the meaning of the Nightmare.
Ness knows that once he wakes up, he will no longer be "just a boy with PSI". He will wake up with the definitive ability to end the world.
"Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds."
I suppose that quote, recited from a scripture he knew little about by a scientist famed with creating the worst invention, rang in his head as he made his way to the statue.
I suppose he thought that of himself, in in one way or another.
And the speech. The speech.
Ness has been hailed as a hero by everyone around him. From Buzz Buzz and Picky to the Tendas of the Lost Underworld to his own friends and enemies, he's had no shortage of people assuring him of his own kindness and greatness.
But does Ness really believe that? Does he truly think of himself as a good person, let alone a hero?
Are heroes even real?
Giygas wasn't always evil. Before he was a cruel tyrant, he was the kindhearted son of Maria.
But Giygas grew powerful. He became so powerful that nobody could ever face him. So powerful that he lost his respect for others. He lost his sight of the value of life. He lost his love for anyone.
He grew so powerful he lost his mind.
Ness could probably take Giygas. He knows this. Giygas himself is not what worries Ness anymore.
What worries Ness at this point is what happens afterwards. After everyone goes back home.
With Giygas dead, Ness' power will have no equal. He will be the uncontested strongest individual in the universe.
And if Ness knows anything...
It's that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
If Giygas became evil because he was corrupted by his own power, then...
What will stop him from suffering the same fate?
What will prevent him from becoming just like the evil he journeyed so far to defeat?
One of my favorite interpretations of Ness' Nightmare is that it doesn't look like the Mani-Mani statue. It looks like Ness. Identical to him in every way. There are no bloodstains, no red eyes, no scars, nothing. Just a boy with a certain look in his eyes, a mirthless expression on his face, an unnervingly relaxed body language.
But Ness already knows. He knows by the look in his eyes that this is his worst nightmare, staring him in the face. He knows that this is more than just a fear.
This is him.
This is who he will be when he wakes up from Magicant. When he leaves the Fire Spring. When he faces and defeats Giygas. When he goes home. When he falls victim to his own power and loses his mind and his heart.
This is his greatest fear. His nightmare.
That he'll win. He'll beat Giygas. And in the end..
He'll turn out just like him.

"A-ah? Is that how I come across?"
Was it the way he fought? How he used his PSI powers so freely without issue? How he kept his emotions under control whenever he was battling against the other Smashers? Perhaps that was the case. Ness did say that Lucas could be a strong fighter when he needed to be, so maybe Zelda believed Lucas didn't fear much?
A small, sheepish laugh comes from the young boy as he looks away for a moment, his shoe rubbing against the ground.
"I... M-Miss Zelda, can I tell you something? Heh, when I first joined, I was so frightened that Ness saved me from Porky. I guess it's just having the support of those who care about you making all the difference."

"This psychokinetic ability allows you to turn invisible and produce shocking electric fields, just like a certain boy with PSI. This field of science is still largely unexplored."
Aka the ability that allows Edd to cosplay as Ness. My friend requested this one to be after Cook. Because of the hat reference, the outfit was a pretty easy pick. Brooch is shaped like an eye.

The ribbon girl sat alone, in the corner of the cell, hugging her teddy bear as her hands, consumed by all that use of PSI felt weak, along with her mind. She had absolutely no way of escaping now, even if she wanted to. She looked at the door, that damn door that separated her from freedom. She felt so weird. So weak. Was she even enough? She put her face between her knees, sighing, a frown creating on her lipstick covered lips.
“… maybe he’ll never come…”
As she said those words, the door of the shack opened, the rays of the sun shining behind the figure, making her cover her eyes for the bright light. Eventually, she lowered her arm, eyes staring at whoever entered. Her cheeks flushed red for a moment, her head racing at the thought that yes… maybe her guardian angel existed and was here for her! She immediately stood up, racing towards the bars of the cell, a huge smile on her face.
Once her vision cleared… she was confused. In front of her didn’t stand a knight, or a courageous hero. In front of her stood a kid. A small, chubby kid, with a round face, a red cap, striped shirt, shorts and a backpack with a baseball bat inside. The kid smiled when he saw her, skipping towards the cell. “There you are! You’re Paula, right?” He beamed, not thinking that someone could hear him right in the middle of Peaceful Rest Valley.
Taken aback by the sudden introduction, the girl fixed her bow, looking down at the kid. “Umh… yes, I’m Paula… and you are…?” she asked, tilting her head in confusion. “I’m Ness! Ness Snes Nintendo! I heard your call through my dream, and I’m here to save you!” He said, like a hero of one of those ‘Videogames’ she heard about. Wasn’t ‘Nintendo’ a company, too? As he said that name, the girl’s eyes widen, this is it! That’s the boy she dreamed about! … But he was different from what she expected. She sighed, looking at Ness, a bit lost in her thoughts. Yes, he was a kid, but he was also the only one she could rely on.
Reorganized her thoughts, she gave him a serious look, her eyes not leaving the boy’s cheerful ones. “Okay Ness, Listen. I know where the key for this stupid cell is.” Ness did his best to follow her, even if he was also a bit lost in himself. “Take the key from Carpainter. He has it hidden away somewhere. You can find him in the mansion of the village, who he kinda made into his temple, Got it?” She explained, as clear as she could, not wanting to confuse him even more than she thought he was now. The boy, after one or two seconds, nodded eagerly, gripping onto his brown backpack. “Got it!” then turned around towards the door to exit the shack.
“Ness- Ness wait a moment!” She shouted, reaching him with her hand. “Mhh?” He turned around again, tilting his head and walking towards the ribbon girl again. She sighed, searching for something in her purse. “Here, take this” she said, showing the boy a big, but very cool badge that had a certain shininess to it. The red capped boy’s eyes widen at the sight of such beautiful object, which he immediately took. It was white with black borders, an image of the Earth and a thunder at the center and a huge writing that read “MOTHER”, painted in a beautiful red color, that for a reflection of the light, could also look blue or yellow.
“That’s the Franklin badge. What it does changes from person to person, or at least... that’s what I heard.” The girl explained, straightening her posture a little bit. “What I know for sure tho, is that it has protective properties and I’m sure it will be most useful to you.” She made a little smile, watching the boy put the badge on his backpack instantly. Her smile then slowly faded, her gaze going down as she whispered something that the boy didn’t hear well. “… if I had enough power, you wouldn’t be in this situation…”.
The boy put his backpack on his shoulders, gripping it tightly. Before heading for the place, he stopped, looking back at the girl. “… Do you think I’ll make it…?” he asked, a small frown on his chubby face. Paula extended her arm to reach him again, the boy allowing her to scratch his head like a child. With a slightly more relaxed expression, she comforted him “Of course you’ll make it, and if you don’t, I’ll try to bust out of here and come for you. Just kick butt like I know you can! alright?” She reassured him, looking at his juvenile eyes, who in a moment returned cheery. “Thank you, Paula… I won’t fail you!” He said, regaining his strength and rushing out of the shack. “Bye bye!” the boy shouted, waving at her with his arm before disappearing outside. She waved back, a bit worried but still hopeful. Yes, she had to lie about coming to save him and bust out of the cage alone, but she felt like she had to for the sake of giving him power. “See you later, Ness…” She said in a small voice, sighing. Maybe he was her destiny, just not like how her parents intended.

EarthBound
Earthbound chronicles the adventures of Ness, a 13-year-old boy who journeys around the world using his "PK" or "PSI" to collect eight melodies in order to save the future from an alien of pure evil, intending to sentence all of reality to the horror of eternal darkness.
Despite being successful in Japan, the North American version was released to a poor commercial response. Years later, the game was praised for its atmosphere, graphics, humour, gameplay, music, and final battle; though was criticized for original English translation. The game is now lauded by gamers worldwide for its humorous depictions of American culture and parody of the RPG video game genre, and has since become a cult classic.
Tumblr media
Earthbound features many traditional RPG elements; the player controls a party of characters who travel through the game's two-dimensional world that is composed of villages, cities, and dungeons.
Along the way, battles are fought against enemies, after which, the party receives experience points for victories. If enough experience points are acquired, a character's level will increase. This increases the character's attributes, like strength, defence, and health. Earthbound breaks traditional RPG features  Instead, the world is entirely seamless, with no differentiation between towns and the outside world. Another non-traditional element is the perspective used for the world. The game uses oblique projection, while most 2-D RPGs use a "top-down" view on a grid or an isometric perspective.
Tumblr media
These actions can include attacking, healing, or the use of items. Characters can also use special PSI attacks that require "Psychic Points." Once each character is assigned a command, the characters and enemies perform their actions in a set order, determined by character speed. Whenever a character receives damage, the hit point box gradually "rolls" down, similar to an odometer. This allows players an opportunity to heal the character or win the battle before the counter hits zero, after which the character is knocked unconscious.
Plot
In EarthBound, there are four main playable characters: Ness, Paula, Jeff Andonuts and Poo. Ness remains the lead character, a silent protagonist, for the entirety of the story. He is a young boy from Onett who loves baseball, and possesses psychic abilities strong enough to affect cosmic events. He is the healer and support character of the group, as he can use Healing and Lifeup to heal effects and refill HP respectively.
Tumblr media
He also can Shield party members with Shield. For offense, Ness can use PSI Rockin, a psychokinetic move that is exclusive to him. He can also manipulate light through PSI Flash. Ness can also psychologically disrupt enemies with moves like Paralysis and Hypnosis. Ness also has the ability to teleport him and the group. His primary weapon of use are Baseball Bats.

Uninvolved in the roleplay but has a question for PSI boys pertaining to the puyo crossover roleplay anon here!
So there really aren't any threats?
No one at all? Not a single being that could have brought these guys here and intended to do it for nefarious purposes?
[Ness]
Well, I'm not counting that.

Prince Poo? :0
HECK YEAH BABY, let's go! Um, I mean, of course!
This boy got done kind of dirty by both the plot and the fandom. He is severely underutilized in both departments, so I vow to give him the attention he clearly deserved.
First of all, incredibly obvious comparisons to Aang aside, can you imagine the misery of being nothing more than a child once you get to the bottom of it, but being raised for a very intent purpose? He is literally surrounded by teachers constantly and passing NPCs in Dalaam repeatably note how he doesn't seem to have time for anything else.
This is basically all he does. Train. Be trained. And like his caretakers KNOW he has some kind of destiny, they literally tell him this before being sent off to Summers!
What I think is that Poo has little to no free will of his own when you combine that with being a prince, which obviously adds in even more rules in how he's raised. He has to be conditioned from the start to be a prince AND The Chosen One (tm), which is a lot of pressure on a kid that is what? 14? 15? Not to mention the fact that his parents are never seen. Are they even real? Oh well, question for another day.
To me, going off with the rest of the Chosen Four was his first taste of freedom. Basically ever.
He clearly didn't know how to handle it, still being extremely formal upon first meeting Ness. I mean, introducing himself with "I am the servant of Ness. I will obey Ness". Goodness gracious, this is not how you talk to other kids!
And yet, he clearly has a goofy side. It's subtle, but his growth is shown by drifting away from acting like that. It's when at the very end, when all is said and done. He bids farewell like this:
"Our travels together end here. I must return to Dalaam, and use this experience for the good of my country.
Ness,
Paula,
Jeff...
Let me demonstrate a strange power before I go. I realized this power as a child. PSI Farewell! Now!
I'll see you again someday!"
(btw i love this dialogue... part of the reason why i just transcribed it)
See, he tells a joke! It's probably just PSI Teleport Beta, but he tells a joke! He's got exclamation marks! He warmed up over time, and I think that's so... cool...
I think what happened over time was this. Ness HATED being seen and referred to as 'master'. Kid lacks a single bone in his body to take advantage of the situation. And he was worried for Poo acting that way. After weeks and weeks of telling him to stop, he gradually does.
And along the way, Poo learns what he wants. Who he is. Not by what was chosen for him, but for who he is inside.
He really couldn't have done it without the other three and the journey along the way. And for them, he'll be eternally grateful going back with a greater sense of identity.

[Ness] "I-I like your bat! It's... R-really neat!" anxiety was so awful, but nonetheless, Lucas tried his best. Gods, the other boy probably thought he was some weird now...
unprompted asks
"Hey, thanks, man!"
It wasn't the strongest bat in Ness' arsenal - those were special to him, and he kept them displayed in his room at home. This was another Onett bat he'd bought from the drugstore in town. Weak enough to not really hurt anyone but a pop fly, but if any danger came around, Ness was more than ready with his PSI.
