a/n ; a reworked soft frenchie fic thats been collecting dust in my docs - a mini gift for @starfalling00 :)

       “Is Butcher always - Like that?”

     “If you mean “like that” as in insufferable, then yes.” 

     Frenchie tossed you a loose smile, eyebrows raising briefly before nodding towards the space on the sofa beside him. Nights like these had grown over the passing months, tension rising within the stuffy walls of Frenchie’s safe house, and sleep ridding itself of those who had needed it most. Frenchie typically found himself lounging on the sofa, a lit joint perched between his lips, eyebrows furrowed as he focused on the television - And somehow you were always the one to find him like this at night. The meetings were quiet, occasionally consisting of small banter and passing the last of the joint between you both, before one decided to head off to bed. It was simpler than dealing with Butcher or trying for small talk with Hughie.

     The clock read 3:42 A.M. Restlessness shackled itself on your bones in the night, seeming to puppet you into pacing back and forth or attempting to sleep to no avail - Surely the sun had risen, and yet every time you peered behind the curtain, night still seemed to stretch on. The soft noise of the television is was roused you to get out of the lumpy mattress, wrapping a jacket over your shoulders before treading quietly to the main area. The smell of weed veiled the air, the television bright and flicking needlessly through channels and a soft humming met you as you walked towards the couch, taking a seat. 

     Frenchie seemed - Exhausted. Bruised streaks of purple pillowed his half-lidded eyes, his gaze vacant and glued to the television, only moving his attention to you when the couch creaked when you sat.

     “It’s far past your bedtime, is it not?” His voice was lower during the night, the rasp of his throat letting a soft purr carry his words, smoke drifting steadily from between his lips. You can’t help but give a small smile, tugging the corners of your lips as he returned the same expression. 

     “We’ve gotta stop meeting like this. People will talk, y’know.”

     Frenchie sucked his teeth, a soft chuckle leaving him as he shook his head slightly. It was comforting to see the man so easily melt from exhaustion into a gentle expression, his eyes softening as they met yours, pulling the joint from his lips. 

     “Oh, Ma Douce, I’m sure they already do.” 

     You smile softly again at his words as he ashed the joint in the ashtray, a small hill of old filters and roaches filling the ceramic dish. Your eyebrows furrow a bit before giving a glace back to Frenchie, who took a slow inhale, shaking his head with a slight grin. 

     "Oh please. Judge me for smoking, and Butcher gets to drink more whiskey than he does water?"

     Frenchie tsked at you as he took a half empty beer bottle from the table in front of you, taking a sip qs he leaned back into the old sofa. For the first time in the agonizingly slow night, you find yourself able to relax your tense shoulders, mindlessly watching the television for a moment. It was easy to fall into a state of empty thought during tense times among the group, all of them seeming to part ways for days at a time. You subconsciously wrung your hands together, folding them in your lap as you watch on. It was one of Frenchie's soap operas, entirely in French, with no subtitles. Of course. With the raise of an eyebrow you look back to Frenchie, whom had already been looking at you. His eyes were dark in the dim lighting, his lids heavy and lips parted slightly, as if taking you in like a work of art hung on the wall. It was mindless for him, as if his eyes seemed to magnetize towards you despite your silence. You tried for another kind smile, and yet he didn't return it, still just watching as your expression shifts and changes - He seemed utterly fascinated.

     "You alright?"

     "Oui,"

His voice was unlike you've heard before - It was rare for him to speak so kindly, so genuinely. Even in moments like this, a silent company between you two; He could never find the words. Perhaps they hadn't existed yet, no word discovered by man could be used to describe you. Not when he sees you as something to be worshiped, something electric with color that the human eye could never capture for more than a moment. Just that moment, eyes locking with each other, your lips still tilted into a smile as he shifted closer to you.

     "May I ask you something?"

     "Mhm,"

You hummed the response as Frenchie leaned forward abit, hands moving to the table to fish a joint filter from a small bag. He began rolling as he spoke, plucking the paper carefully from the small carton and scooting the silver grinder closer. It gave him something to focus on, something for his hazy mind to fixate upon while his heart thrummed against his chest at a growing pace.

      "Do you trust me?"

     "Far too much, all things considered, but yes."

You attempted to keep the mood light as you watched Frenchie carefully begin to fill the paper with grinded weed like muscle memory. He hardly had to keep his eyes on it, his gaze darting from the joint up to the quiet television a few times. He did appreciate the joke at least, a crack of a smile reaching his painfully serious and tired expression as he tossed a glance over his shoulder toward you.

     "You have a quick wit - Perhaps you can assist me with something,"

Frenchie spoke before grunting abit, leaning back once more into the sofa with a freshly rolled joint resting between his middle and forefinger. With an exhale, his head tilted back, eyes still on you as if waiting for a response to the vague comment. You raised your eyebrows slightly, giving a cock of your head, only further entertaining the French man.

     "What do you mean?"

     "We'll talk about it later, hm?"

Your eyebrows furrowed, pushing your confusion only more as he brought the joint to his lips, pulling a small box of matches from his pocket with a wry smile. Playing with your mind must have helped him cheer up; What an asshole. In the kindest way possible, of course.

     "When?"

     "You ask so many questions. I'm giving you free weed, how about a thank you, hm?"

    "Fuck off,"

    You could feel your own smile beginning to pull at the corners of your lips, hand reaching out to push his shoulder playfully. His arm was strong, your gentle shove hardly budging his frame as he quietly chuckled along beside you. Had Butcher been there, he would have already come out with twenty different complaints of you two being too loud - Yet you two sat quietly laughing, Frenchie striking a match and lighting the joint to pass it off to you. The world, Butcher, Supes, everything melted away as you exhaled a plume of grey into the dingy "living room" air.

what if in the lead up to the reconciliation in s2 we get flashbacks of moments in s1 the audience never got to see, like ed crashing on stede's couch and smiling gently as he listens to stede's soft snoring, or stede blushing profusely as ed lines his body up behind stede's as he corrects his dueling form, or ed AND stede having a soft, intimate moment together, looking into each other's eyes and just appreciating the exciting, insane, incredible person standing before one another as stede finishes tying the little purple bows into ed's beard for the french party. maybe they both steal a quick glance down at each other's lips and the moment suddenly becomes charged but gets immediately broken by Frenchie and Olu interrupting them to let them know they're approaching the french vessel, and ed and stede share one final look before leaving the captain's quarters with an ocean of unspoken potential having been planted. idk I guess that would be nice or whatever. like i even care

Lucius as red and Frenchie as purple

Okay, I'm sure we all know (and have our own takes on) the significance of red and purple for Ed's character, but I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen anything on the connection to these characters also marked by those colours, both of whom also - alone amongst the crew - have something of a personal relationship with Ed and play a key part in his story.

this is just my thoughts on the matter and I'd love to hear others. this is also very much from the perspective of Ed's arc, leaving aside the characters' own storylines.

First off, we see red a lot more than purple, and it appears both more interpersonal and more mutable (and yet more defined).

Take the red silk, which originally carries a connection to Ed's mother, with the no doubt complicated feelings there and the implications about "fine things" - the silk is a fine thing, but also just a scrap of the kind of things young Ed is barred access to, a reminder that they're "not for us". But the silk is also Ed's heart, and it becomes infused with new meaning when Stede touches it. When Ed throws it away, he's trying to let go of both his love for Stede and his desire for fine things, for soft things. Stede and fine things are woven together now. Throwing away something he's always had drives it home that Ed hasn't just lost what he recently gained, he's worse off than before meeting Stede. What was ambiguous before has to be denounced now.

(cf. the petrified orange - something that carries Jim's family history becomes something that reminds Stede of Ed becomes something that connects him to his family.)

Similarly, the red robe symbolises "the colour Ed brings to Stede's life", then becomes the breakup robe, both heartbreak and comfort, first for Stede, then Ed.

Red is the colour of love, and while Ed after Stede's abandonment rids it from his person, he adds it to his flag as if to publicly execute it.

I don't know if Lucius wearing red was intended to fall within the same colour symbolism, but it's hard to ignore. He, too, is a connection between Ed and Stede and their love specifically, nudging both of them along, being their confidante at various stages. And he gets tossed with the red silk. (crucially, I think, after the red silk.)

I've seen a lot of people say that Ed tossed Lucius overboard because Lucius was the one who told him to go for Stede, and I'm not saying that's wrong, but I think it's more because Lucius witnessed him in vulnerable moments. The Ed that Lucius saw is incompatible with the Kraken. Maybe he also reminds Ed of Stede, much like another plaything. This is on an overall motive level – in the moment for Ed the drowning doesn't seem premeditated. (I could go on speculating about what might have happened to Lucius if he hadn't come on deck at that moment, but perhaps another time.)

Actually, the scene in which Ed gets rid of first the silk and then Lucius is all but infused in red, practically the only colour apart from the blue tint of night-time. It's as if everything is coloured by Ed's heartbreak - and all of it has got to go.

The colour purple is also related to love, having been identified as a symbol of Ed's growing love for Stede – but I would say where red exists and signifies between the two, the purple is an Ed thing only. It's not just about the romance, but about the person Ed is able to be with Stede, the person he's uncovering beneath the leathers and salt. Its appearances are not as frequent as red's, and though the outfit Ed wears to the fancy party is very striking, the purple shirt he wears on the treasure hunt seems almost a shy visual sign, something tentative.

And whereas red features in numerous ways in Ed's heartbreak era, up to and including the bleeding heart added to his flag for all to see, the purple disappears. It symbolised something budding, the beginning of a journey that got cut short, and it retreats before it can be killed.

Now, this is probably less obvious - both visually and thematically - but it's definitely interesting to me that the one other Revenge crew member that Ed has a connection with wears purple: in a lighter shade on his jacket and as an accent on his fancy suit.

I as well as others have speculated before that Ed picks Frenchie for his "new crew" because a) he has shown himself to be adaptable and savvy, including in his reaction to Blackbeard, and b) because of the solidarity, recognition and validation when Ed is humiliated by the fancy party people. Like Lucius, Frenchie has witnessed Ed in a vulnerable moment, but in relation to the outside world rather than his inner feelings (though, of course, there is overlap). Whether Ed's recruitment of Frenchie is because he thinks he'll be an asset to the Blackbeard operation or out of some desire for a personal ally, I sure hope season 2 will tell.

I like to think of Frenchie as a kind of (largely unaware) messenger. He creates the cat flag that acts as a message of Nigel Badminton's death, sent back to the English in the dinghy and subsequently shown (dramatically) any time Chauncey talks about his brother's assumed murder. I think it's no coincidence that Frenchie is also the one to both sew and hoist Blackbeard's new flag – another message, an intentional one this time.

Whereas Lucius mediates between Ed and Stede for the benefit of their love, Frenchie mediates and carries messages from and to the outside world: bringing in the invitation to the fancy party, introducing Olu as Prince Azi, connecting Stede to the information he needs for Stark Revelations – introducing the whole series with his song…

He's smart and tactical, but also whimsical as fuck, both qualities Ed appreciates, standing for not just using what's there but also shameless reinvention. One of the qualities that originally enamoured me with the show is the constant play with identity and presentation. When characters dress up, whether that's Stede's captainy clothes or straight-up costumes like in the fuckery, they're rarely being "fake", but rather playing, exploring or emphasizing facets of themselves, or inventing or discovering new ones. Similarly, the question of Ed's fractured identity is more complex and nuanced than "which one is the real Ed".

…but I digress. If I have to pin down the connection I'm suggesting between Frenchie and purple, I'd consider it a sign that he could be someone who helps Ed stay in touch with himself. The themes I've outlined above have some common ground: self-discovery, self-invention, self-determination. If Lucius stands for a sexual and romantic liberation, Frenchie might stand for a personal one.

I've kept this mostly on the symbolic and abstract level so far, but the characters around Ed aren't just a greek chorus. I know many people agree that to come back from the Kraken, it's not enough for Ed to regain Stede's love; he needs to come to terms with himself in his own right. That kind of personal growth doesn't happen in a vacuum, and while Ed may be shoving the need for connection deep down with the advent of the Kraken, both Lucius and Frenchie have shown him that people can care about him and want to help him. I like to entertain the thought that in keeping Frenchie close, Ed is subconsciously holding onto the possibility of connection. (@uselessheretic has a post on similar themes of Ed opening up to the crew beyond Stede via Frenchie, noting the potential for poc solidarity between them, specifically as something Ed has been missing in his life.)

We've seen Frenchie act deferentially towards Blackbeard/The Kraken, and comradely towards Ed; what I'm most curious to see about their relationship in season 2 is how this balances out in the new status quo. Season 1 ends with both of them putting up their masks - Frenchie following Ed's lead, always reacting to what the situation around him demands for survival - and I'd expect this to be a setback in their relationship, mirroring the setback in Ed's personal growth as he shuts himself back off.

Anyway. All of that was supposed to be about four paragraphs.

Colour’s meaning in ofmd:

First rule is that brighter = more intense, and lighter = more open a feeling is. I’ll say more below, but it already says something about Blackbeard’s crew being all black and only black :’)

Yellow:

Yellow is a colour of truth. Colour of following your dreams and passions. Before the break-up gown, Stede is wearing the yellow one.

Teal:

Basically it’s a sea colour. It means sea and freedom. In e4 Alma has teal dress, while playing pirates with Stede, which also shows she was closer with Stede than her brother. There’s a lot of teal-ish colours around Stede, but most are actually “hidden”, darker. He was keeping it a secret from others. When he’s on his boat in s1 he’s almost glowing teal.

It’s the colour of sea and freedom, but more like an idea of it, not a realistic one, witch may be the reason many crew members have some teal elements, usually very small, and Stede is all teal and then, in e10 he destroys this idealisation to start something real. After his first “kill” in e1 Stede’s teal's never that bright again.

Pink:

It’s a colour of rejection. Not sure why, but it is. The moment Stede leaves, Mary’s wearing light pink. When Ed becomes distant and then leaves him to go with Jack, when Stede left Ed, they are wearing the break-up gown, which is bright pink. I’d say the difference between those two intensities would say something about the intensity of the feeling. Mary was abandoned, but she wasn’t so hurt by it, they weren’t happy together. But Ed and Stede were hurt very much.

Also all of the non-white crew wears pink/pink-ish in e1, while in disguise (because you know, to show racism) + Lucius’s very bright scarf & Black Pete’s light pink… something (probably because homophobia, and Lucius is very loudly queer). All the things white colonisers reject.

Red:

We all know, it’s a heart colour, Ed’s heart but not only. Ed hides his red, Lucius is wearing a lot of red, as someone who’s not ashamed of his love and usually helps with relationship’s problems, Stede, while destroying his teal is covering it in red and in s2 wears red scarf(?). At the end of e3 Stede is covered in red, even the background turns red, while meeting Ed for the first time. He's also wearing dark red when talking about his favorite horsie :")

Salmon/Orange:

It’s a colour of insecurity, feeling inadequate or incompetent, unsure. Stede wears light salmon/orange when Ed says he’s not ready for a fuckery, then very dark (almost brown, but still salmon-ish to me) when he feared Ed’s going to leave, because Stede’s wasn’t fun enough. Ed wears dark salmon in e4, when trying this new persona/thinking he was expendable to this Blackbeard legend. Stede is deprived of his salmon vest in e2, when he got more confident.

Purple:

I think it’s the creativity and adventure colour. I’m also not sure if it’s important that what Ed was missing after leaving the Revenge was a lavender soap (something something he wanted to feel clean and with Jack he wasn’t again, it’s a colour meta, let’s not go there). I mean we say it’s Ed’s colour, but I’m not sure anyone here has “their” colour. If colours are feelings, no-one has their own. For example, other characters wearing purple is Stede in e2 (when he has to use his creativity), Lucius (art), Frenchie (music, crafts and cons) and sometimes Oluwande. Characters get more purple when they need to figure out a plan or scheming something, get creative.

White/Beige:

Stede is all white in e3. He’s like a blank canvas (Lucius is immediately covered in red again), inviting pirate world, willing to learn. It also makes him stick out like a sore thumb of course. White is supposed to mean empty, nothing, bare, open. Stede made his white crew wear mostly white, to not be seen as suspicious.

Beige, as some kind of darker white, is not knowing what you want, figuring thing out.

Ed and Stede are white when discovering their love for each other, entering something completely new for them. Stede, at the end of s1 is colourless, but in s2 he gets a red scarf and later gets green/dark teal shirt. Jim is all beige while hiding and figuring out their identity. When being afraid that he’s not enough fun, Stede choose all beige for their adventure, showing he doesn’t really know what he’s doing but he’s ready to do it.

Beige is temporary.

Now, we have yellow&red-ish&teal ship, Stede’s dark red&dark teal at his wedding, Sted’s family portrait (everyone close and light yellow/orange, except Stede - dark blue/teal and distant):

But the real kicker for me is Stede’s pitch black cravat Ed wears on his neck. His feelings for Stede while always with him, hidden very deep inside.

He gives you a moment to compose yourself, watching closely as you rub the tears from your eyes and take a deep breath, “It would just be nice to have somewhere to sit where people aren’t going to watch me.” 

Joel’s heart almost breaks at your words. He doesn’t know you, not in the slightest, but the thought that you felt like you had to hide away, in your own community, the place that was meant to make you feel some semblance of normal, was preposterous to him. 

“I’ll build you something, don’t worry,” He reassures, “Tommy has me on patrol for the next few days, but as soon as I can, I promise I’ll build you the best damn table and chairs you’ve ever seen.” 

You laugh now, through the remnants of your tears, “Thank you.” Is all you can manage to say. 

He’s turning around then, you go to follow him, but he stops in his tracks, eyes admiring the trellis against the back wall of your home, full in bloom of sweet peas, “These are beautiful.” He comments. 

“They’re sweet peas,” You inform him, “Maria found the seeds for me, said something about it being good for me to have something to put my energy into,” You shrug, “I guess she was right.”

You reach out and pluck one of the deep purple blooms, “These are my favourites,” You say, turning the bloom over in your fingers before you hand it to him, he looks confused, “Sweet peas are meant to symbolize kindness and friendship,” You explain, “Also fond goodbyes, but I think kindness is more appropriate here.”

ricky represents eds heart, it's odd it's annoying it's whiny, he tried to go to the bar to approach stede, stede ran away cause the heart knew who he was .

then he comes again and is like i know who you are!! (youre running away from me). i know everything about you all of your adventures. the gentleman pirate saved my life! you're my hero! you gave me hope! that my life could be of my own invention. (OUCH)

stede smiles and gets the heart out of the rain to listen it out.

then he says jackie/the pirates(izzy) banned me from there cause i dared to mention the chest (his feelings which are in his chest[bodypart] ) and then spanish jackie which is a part of ed cut off a part of his heart as punishment for finding it within him to have hope and wish for a different life and find this chest full of indigo blue dirt, love, hidden within him, love is much more blue this season, less purple. (for ed.=)

Frenchie says his headbox is LOCKED with all the traumas inside. he won't allow anything to hurt him anymore, he's done with trying and opening himself up. But his darn feelings his chest was found and unlocked, opened. The queen knows how much it's worth unlike roach who doesn't know how much it's worth or what it even is.

Maybe that portrays his conflicting feelings, confusion, doubt. Maybe roach's stripey shirt is a representation of black and red ed and piracy together they're confused what this feelings are. but the red queen is like I KNOW WHAT THEY ARE back off!!!! you all work for me.

basically stede abandons ricky aka eds heart while ricky was like having too much fun so he didn't realize the danger of being harmed, he thought they were having fun, he didn't come prepared cause that's his hero, stede. 😐
