A Blurb.

This world is one of cycles. The Rotten and the Living have been in constant strife since they discovered each other, and realized that they need each other.

One feeds off the others death, and the other organises around them as an enemy to be defeated.

To do this, the Living discovered the Divine Flame within them, the source of their Life. Those who go to battle with the Rot use their Divine Flame, their Fire, to destroy the bodies of the Rotten. Paladins of The Flame hunt down the Rotten in the belief their deaths allow their own kind to live longer.

The Rotten have something similar, The Blackfire, a thing that unites them all. They see it in dreams, and it fills their veins. It's what brings them back each death, and ultimately what destroys them after a while as new Rotten must be made off the death of one.

Mist Nosoi was born from the death of her father, and in her mothers womb. Born between the Living and the Rotten, she wanders the world alone, afraid of the world she was born into.

While wandering, she finds a girl like her.

Man oh man, this is Putrescence Regnant (2021), a bog crawl for Mörk Borg. There is something magical about Mörk Borg, in that its aesthetics are capable of creating ridiculous things that are also right in a perfect nexus of complimentary interests. To wit: I am interested in this product for many reasons.

First among them is more Mörk Borg and Johan Nohr’s art and design sense. Second among them is the application of that to the design constraints of a vinyl LP. Both versions (the regular yellow and the Kicskstarter exclusive foil on black) acquit themselves well — there is indeed a fully crawlable Mörk Borg bog laid out across the gatefold and in a sumptuous booklet. Given the small size of the Mörk Borg book, the big vistas of the 12x12 seem entirely decadent. The bog itself, filled as it is with undead and bad air, is suitably horrible.

Third, I like moody, ambient music. Partly for RPGs, but also for writing and also for sitting in my office being moody. Triple threat. This tilts a bit more towards the punishing metal end of the spectrum, but not really in a loud way. It’s quietly punishing. Well, that’s not entirely true either, it’s loud, it’s just not construction site loud. Greg Anderson of Sunn O))) unleashes riffs on one track, for instance. Again, perfect for Mörk Borg.

Fourth, and somewhat surprisingly, I really enjoyed the roguelike videgame Darkest Dungeon, which I think shares a lot of aesthetic cues with Mörk Borg. To my delight, voice actor Wayne June, who memorably narrates Darkest Dungeon, lays down a track of dark prophecy here. It is perfect. And terrifying? Shocked to report that it approaches the rare classification of “like Requiem for a Dream,” in that I acknowledge its quality and maybe don’t ever want to experience it again because I found it physically disturbing. High marks for a person talking over music.

At the Hakugyokurou, Yuyuko is eating snacks that Youmu had prepared for her. But she suddenly stopped as she remembered hearing something from Yukari. She decided to call Youmu over as she had a job for her.

"Youmu, I've heard troubling rumors about the Forest of Magic. It seems something unusual is afoot. Could you do me a favour and go check it out for me?"

"You're sounding kinda serious for once. Are you sure this isn't just you wanting me to make my way there and pick up some snacks along the way?"

"Well you can pick up snacks too, but no I actually have a job for you. According to Yukari a strange smell has been emanating from the forest and I want you to check it out."

"Lady Yuyuko... the Forest of Magic always has strange smells."

"I know, but Yukari says this is a little bit different than usual. Yukari said that it smells like the forest is decaying. The scent is putrid, like that of rotting flesh, and it's causing unrest among the people living there."

"Well if Yukari is saying that it's serious, then I guess I can go check it out. I'll try to be back in time for dinner."

"It might be a little dangerous, so take some people with you just in case, okay?"

"Okay, I have someone in mind that I can take with me. She's been eager to do something around here so I'll recruit her."

And thus, Youmu is going out to solve an incident! She'll be joining with three companions to solve this incident. But how will it play out? Stay tuned to find out! :D
