Knight Commander Zell
--Detail shots and Ephemera under the cut!--
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's taken two weeks, but he's D O N E!!!!
This was a huge challenge, and I'm so happy with it. I've wanted to do a custom portrait for a while, but my skills weren't quite caught up to my ambition. UNTIL NOW.
My goal was to reflect his multicultural heritage and well-traveled life while still keeping it close enough to the aesthetic of the in-game portraits. He was born and mostly raised in Hongli (sorta-kinda Mongolia) until moving to Ustalav (I like to make it sorta-kinda Czechia). In the background there's an Ovoo - a border marker normally found throughout Mongolia, Tibet, and surrounding areas. The mountains themselves are a little bit Altai, a little bit Orlicke.
His jewelry consists of hammered silver, turquoise, coral, carnelian, jade, and a little bit of amber, from a friend. The jewelry designs and embroidery I designed to try and pull from both backgrounds - thankfully both Czech and Mongolian artisans love tiny beads and horse-shaped things. The pouch is where he keeps his spindle; he keeps the spinning fleece tucked into his outer robe :3 He spins from the fold, btw, for those in the know:
Tumblr media
Speaking of fleece, I love how the fleece on his robe came out:
Tumblr media
Look at that. COZY.
As for Zell himself, decided one of his Dhampir tells would be ridges on the inside of his ears, like a fruit bat:
Tumblr media
It pleases me greatly.
I decided to go with a wry expression because, well, I know what I'm about. I know that in my head, Sosiel is painting this portrait of his friend while Daeran is standing over his shoulder, making loud and goofy commentary about his future husband, who is down bad but trying so hard to keep a straight face for this portrait.
Anyway, it's time I take a little break before going in and adding the endgame, full Azata details (because of COURSE I'm doing a full Azata version.) and then I can rest up before... Perhaps... offering portraits of this type for commission.

Pathfinder : Wrath of the Righteous, an Ask Game for your Knight-Commander
Tumblr media
Hello fellow crusaders! Here's a little ask game that is specifically aimed at your Knight Commander from Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. Have fun!
Do they think they're going to make it out alive?
How do they feel about Areelu Vorlesh?
Who is/are their best friend(s) among companions and why?
What did they do before they became a crusader? Did they have a job, an occupation?
Do they have a family? If so, what kind? Do they miss them? Do they still have hope to see them again?
Which mythic path did they choose and why? Do they regret it?
Is your KC religious? If yes, which deity do they follow? If not, what is their view on religion?
What do they desire the most?
Do they have hobbies beside the crusade? Any passions or skills they have?
What would be the meal that give them a little ability bonus?
For martial KCs, favorite weapon? For spellcasters, favorite spell?
What is their alignment, and why? How do they feel about it? Do they change alignment at one point?
What is their biggest regret regarding their time as the KC?
Which companion is their closest friend?
Which companion do they hate/really don't like?
If applicable, who did they romance and why? If no one, why?
Which non-companion NPC do they really like?
If they survived, what is their life post crusade?
How did they feel during their time in the Abyss?
Which event of the crusade traumatized them?
Did they actually like something about being the KC?
Who was their favorite advisor during crusade council?
Where did they get their name from? Family, themselves? Does their name have a particular meaning?
Where do they come from in Golarion? Do they miss their homeland? How do they feel about their homeland, its politics and current state?
How did they welcome the physical change that came with their mythic powers? Did they embrace it/reject it?
Did they separate from any companions? Why? (Consider killing a companion too for this question)
Favorite animal companion?
Would they be a companion instead of the KC? What would their storyline and personal quest be?
What would their domains be after a potential ascension?
Did they chose to take the crossbow or the scroll to run away from Deskari right at the begining?

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Ask Game - Mechanics and Story
Knight-Commanders, what is the story told by those numbers on your character sheet? Here is an ask game list with some questions themed around that:
What led the future Knight-Commander to take their base class?
What led to the Knight-Commander picking their archetype, or staying the standard class?
If they chose to multiclass, what does it reflect about them? If they did not, why? Story or player reasons.
What prestige classes did they go for, and why? If not, would one fit them or did they qualify for one?
Which class features would particularly stand out with them - Rage, Channel Positive/Negative Energy, Animal Companions, etc.?
What about their skills and feats - what story is told by their skill selection, or was it pure gameplay?
Is there an alternative class or archetype that is in-game that may fit them better, and if so why did they not take that path?
Is a respec part of their story, and if so why? If not, if they had to respec into something else what would it be?
How does their Background choice reflect their character, and how does it play into their build?
How does their ancestry (race) play into their class and mythic path - do they overlap, or what dynamic is created from that combination?
How does their mythic path synergize with their build?
How does their mythic path synergize with their personality - does it augment it, or is it in contrast? Something in-between?
Which mythic abilities/spells would be iconic to them, and was it their preference or did they prefer something less iconic?
What about another mythic path that they did not take? Is there one that would fit them, build or personality wise, and what might that have looked like?
In your story, does the Knight-Commander consciously choose their mythic path at Drezen, or was it thrust upon them by their actions or some other outside force?
How well do they play mechanically with their romance, if any? If not, which party member do they synchronize best with?
Do they overlap with a party member in role or narrative presence, and if so how do they contrast from said party member?
Did any of their companions multiclass or take a PRC they do not start with, and if so what is the story behind this?
What is their favored weapon(s) or spell(s), and why?
Is there an item in-game that you felt became iconic to the Knight-Commander?
If the Knight-Commander could get a unique item, what would it be and what would it do?
What is the Commander’s opinion of their mythic patrons/advisors - the Hand of the Inheritor, Aivu or the Desnan Adepts, Zacharias, the Aeon in the mirror, Hal, Yozz and Noticula, etc.?
What units did they pick in the Military Council (Infantry, Archers, Cavalry, Spellcasters, Grand Tier), and why?
When the option to pick was available, which mythic units did they unlock and why?

My priggish Commander Vespera chatting with the infamous Count soon after the siege of Drezen, fully recognizing his oblique speech strategies by now and getting amused by his unsuccessful verbal manoeuvering.
Super late to the party with the fanarts, but I still wanted to finish it since this questline was one of the biggest highlights of my Angel playthrough. I will never run out of praise for how well-crafted character Daeran is and how much his story nails my absolutely favorite tropes and themes.

Gazing Starward
(Anevia, Nenio, Aivu, Knight Commander/Arueshalae, trans Knight Commander)
Happy Trans Day of Visibility!
I got to the Anevia conversation in Act 5 and found the response options pretty lacking, especially given that I imagine Aoife (my Azata Knight Commander) as trans. So here's a way that conversation might have gone:
Aoife rubbed her temples. Ever since she’d returned to Drezen, trying to manage the armies and decrees that actually made up the Fifth Crusade had taken up most of her time. She hadn’t even had the time to help Arueshalae with her dream. She stared blankly at the green and red miniatures dotting the map of the Worldwound.
“Commander.” Regill’s stern voice startled Aoife.
“Wha- yeah, Regill, what’s up?”
“It is nearly midnight, Commander. With your permission, I will retire to my quarters, and I recommend you do the same.”
“Oh, of course, Regill. Get some sleep. If I can get these orders issued tomorrow morning, we’ll take the teleportation circle in the afternoon. After we meet with the Hellknights, there are a few places along the front I’d like to follow up on.”
Regill saluted and walked out of the command room. Aoife looked to the guards still remaining.
“You all can leave, too. I’ve got one or two more things to finish up here, but it’s late, and Aivu and myself can take care of any issues that come up.”
The guards stood at attention while she spoke, then bowed to her and left.
“Hey, Commander.” Anevia tapped Aoife’s shoulder. Aoife jumped.
“Anevia, you don’t have to call me that. Technically, I’m not even the commander anymore.”
Anevia shrugged. “Sure. Anything on your mind?” Aoife thought for a moment.
“I don’t know,” Aoife sighed. “We’re putting the pieces of the crusade back together, all of my friends here have different places they need to go and things they need to do so that we can fix their specific problems, we need to go save Irabeth and the Queen, I need to figure out what the hell to do with these godsdamned Crystals, there’s all of my friends up at the court (including some actual Azatas) who I have to solve disputes between, and in between doing all of those things I’m in charge of going into all of these places dotted across the Worldwound and killing demons and cultists. It’s just a lot, I guess.”
Anevia laughed. “Yeah. If you need to talk about anything, you know I’m always here for that, right? Even if you just want to shoot the shit about Desnan temples or whatever.”
“Yeah, I know. Thanks, Anevia,” Aoife said. She hesitated, then said, “I promise I’m not trying to press if you don’t want to share, but would you feel comfortable telling me about the issue that Irabeth sold her sword to help resolve?” Anevia laughed.
“Still on that? Sure, Aoife. You remember how I told you about how my mom sent me off to the temple of Desna to keep me safe as a kid?” Aoife nodded. “Well, that’s all true, except that for all she knew, she didn’t send her daughter. She sent her son. The priests at the temple hid me, and they pretended I was a girl as a way to keep me hidden better. Except that I realized it felt right. It was kind of like… like a muscle I didn’t know I had was suddenly relaxed after it had been tense my whole life? Anyway, I kept the disguise. Then, I met Beth, and we fell in love. Eventually, she told me about a potion they make in some parts of the world. She found a reputable alchemist that could make it, and she sold her family’s sword to get the money for it. I told her she didn’t have to, but she insisted. I’m grateful. We’d still have been saving up for it on our combined salaries in Kenabres if she hadn’t.” Aoife was pacing the room now. Anevia waited for her to say something, but the silence lingered. Anevia sighed and started on her prepared defensive. “Look, if this is gonna be some kind of problem, Commander-”
Aoife started laughing. “Fucking Hells. In Kenabres? I’d hoped that maybe I could find a lead there, but I didn’t know how close I’d been…”
“What?”
“I can’t believe you got one in Kenabres. What are the fucking odds?”
“Aoife, were you looking for an Elixir of Sex Shifting? Oh, shit– is Aoife even the right name?”
“Huh?” Anevia’s words snapped Aoife back into the moment. “Oh, yeah, Aoife’s correct. It’s not the name my mother called me, but that was the case even after I told her, so fuck her.” Anevia stared at her as she continued. “I’ve been trying to find one of those fucking potions for years. The one time I went through Nerosyan I saw one on display, but at that point I couldn’t really afford it even if I hadn’t been too frightened to use it.”
“Holy shit, Aoife, I’m so sorry that I didn’t know, I-”
“It’s okay, honestly it’s a pretty big complement to my shoddy illusions and minor transmutations that the best spy in the Crusade didn’t notice.”
“I don’t think they’re as shoddy as you think they are. Have you told anyone else?”
Aoife shook her head. “By the time I was in a position where we had a moment to breathe, I was also the Knight Commander of the Fifth Crusade. There are enough old-ass nobles in the capital that would’ve dropped any pretense of trying to help us out if they knew, and we were already on the rocks as it was. I didn’t want to make that situation any worse.” She paused, thinking. “I’ve tried to bring it up to Arue. If she really does reciprocate my feelings, she should know, right? I don’t know, I didn’t want to impose, especially when we were in the Abyss. She has enough going on. Maybe once I can help her out with her dream we can have an actual conversation about… us, I guess. Me. Her.” Aoife kept pacing as she spoke.
Anevia looked at Aoife thoughtfully. “Irabeth and Arueshalae have a lot of differences, but I can’t imagine that Arueshalae’s reaction to this would be anything short of as supportive and kind as Beth’s was. Whether you take an elixir or not.”
“Objectively I do understand that, but… I don’t know. I don’t think anyone I travel with would be weird about it if I told them, but that doesn’t make it an easy conversation, you know?” Aoife smiled. “Of course, you understand. I don’t know. I don’t want to sound ungrateful or anything, because my life is so insane now, but I wish I’d been able to get an Elixir before Kenabres burned.” She felt her new wings fluttering behind her. “What with the wings and the flower petals and the plants blooming everywhere I walk in Drezen, you’d think Areelu’s fucking ‘Mythic Power’ would have been a place to start with all of this shit, but I’ve tried that and no dice.”
“Well, first off, there’s not going to be any pressure to tell anyone you don’t want to tell. I won’t even tell Beth if you don’t want me to. Second, not to focus on money, but I’m sure you could afford one now, right?”
“Oh, sure. Once you find an alchemist in the middle of the Worldwound who’s using their talents to make Elixirs of Sex Shifting instead of Potions of Healing or Shield of Faith or Alchemist’s Fire, let me know and I’ll add my name to their certainly extensive list of orders.”
Anevia smiled thoughtfully. “You should get to bed, Aoife. You can finish signing these decrees tomorrow. Let me get everything put away.”
“You’re probably right. I need to focus. Save Irabeth, the Queen, and the rest of the Crusaders in Iz, then close the Worldwound, then deal with the expensive and powerful Elixir. I’ll have the bottle in my hands by the end of the year.” Aoife walked over to Aivu, who had been curled up asleep on the floor since just after sunset, and lightly scratched behind her ears. “Hey, Aivu. I’m off to bed, if you want to come hang out.” Aivu opened her eyes groggily, then bounced up to her feet.
“Okay, let’s go! Goodnight Anevia!”
Anevia watched as the pair crossed the hall to the Commander’s Quarters. She snuffed out the last few candles in the war room, and smiled as she walked the short distance down to her and Irabeth’s quarters.
The next day, Anevia took Aoife’s new decrees and passed them onto her scouts, who went off to the teleportation circles to deliver the orders to those expected to carry them out. Aoife took a small group out to the Hellknight camp to meet with Regill’s superiors, and that gave Anevia at least a few days to work.
The Inn was surprisingly full, given how difficult travel in the Worldwound was. Of course, some of the rooms were permanent residents, such as the one Anevia was going to.
“What do you want, girl?” Nenio asked, not looking up from the book she was scribbling notes into.
“Hi to you too, Nenio.”
“Interesting– more individuals than my assistant find the exchange of meaningless pleasantries to be necessary to begin a conversation.” Nenio looked up after writing the thought down. “My question stands, girl.”
“You brew potions, correct?”
“Yes, girl. Though, if you require healing potions, I would suggest you find someone else. I believe the tiefling boy makes them.”
“Great. How do you feel about Transmutation?”
“It is one of the schools of magic. Not entirely uninteresting to me, but not my speciality either. Please, get to the point, girl.”
Anevia smiled and pulled out an old piece of paper with an alchemical formula written on it. “Do you think you could make this?” Nenio took it and scanned it quickly.
“Ah, for my assistant? Good. Her illusions are good, but I imagine she will prefer not having to use the spell power. Yes. I can make this. If you find me the reagents.”
“Wait– you knew?”
“Knew what, girl?”
“Knew the commander was– nevermind. I’ll get you the ingredients.”
Nenio nodded, then went back to her notes. Anevia went to talk to Wilcer about some acquisitions.
The Commander’s trip ended up taking several days, which was good news for Anevia. Nenio had to be reminded of the task she’d agreed to do, but once the ingredients had been requisitioned (Wilcer was helpful to a point, but the thieflings had some helpful connections that got the more exotic ingredients in incredibly quickly), she had completely absorbed herself into honing the elixir.
After the fifth day of work, the mixture was complete. Anevia recognized the smell (she still remembered it vividly), and the viscosity was exactly to specification.
The next day, Aoife, Aivu, Arueshalae, Regill, Ulbrig, Daeran, and Seelah returned to Drezen.
That afternoon, Aoife returned to the war room for the first time since she’d gotten back to Drezen.
“Anevia, can I speak to you for a moment in private?”
“Of course, Commander. Let’s go to the balcony.”
The Commander and Anevia closed the door behind them.
“I told Arue.”
“Yeah? How did it go?”
“It went– she’s so wonderful. I can’t believe I’m so lucky.” Anevia smiled.
“What did I tell you? Arueshalae’s got a good head on her shoulders. I’m glad you talked to her.”
“Thanks, Anevia. I’m sorry to spring this all on you.”
“Aoife, you’re one of the most powerful sorcerers alive and you have an unfathomable mythic connection to the plane where the goddess I’ve worshipped my entire life lives. This is one of the only things in the world I feel confident giving you advice about.” Aoife leaned over and hugged her.
“I don’t know if I’m going to tell anyone else. I don’t think they need to know. Not right now, at least. Maybe someday. Once this is all over.”
“Makes sense. You’ve got a lot on your plate, and so do they.”
“Yeah.”
“Speaking of things on your plate, though, Aoife…” Anevia pulled a small vial of sparkling liquid from a pouch at her side. “I don’t know if this adds something or takes something away, but I found this for you.” Aoife’s eyes widened, then filled with tears.
“You– you did? Where?”
“Found someone in town who could make potions but wasn’t working on anything for the rest of the crusaders. Figured it wouldn’t be too much of a hassle for them. Unrelated, and I don’t imagine she’ll remember why, but you may want to thank Nenio at some point.” Aoife laughed, still crying. She reached out and took the bottle. She contemplated something for a minute, then spoke.
“Tonight, can you meet me and Arue and Aivu in my quarters? I don’t want everyone to see it happen, but… I’d like some company when I take it.”
“Of course, Knight Commander.”
That night, after dismissing everyone from the war room, Aoife walked to her quarters. Ever since her and Arue had finally gotten together, the room had been filled with the flowers of Elysium. A fitting place for such an event, Aoife thought. Aivu and Arueshalae came in together. Aoife walked to Arueshalae, and pulled her into a kiss. Arue blushed and smiled.
“We’re still waiting on Anevia, but I wanted to bring you both here because tonight I’m going to do something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time.” As she spoke, Aoife took the elixir off of her desk. “My physical form… hasn’t really ever been the way it’s felt like it should. For as long as either of you have known me, I’ve been using some simple spells and items to make myself look a bit more like the image in my head.” Anevia walked into the room quietly and smiled at Aoife. “This is a potion that can help. It’ll make my body match the person that you know. That Desna knows. I’m excited, but I don’t want to be alone when it happens. If it’s okay with you, I’d like you to stay here while I take it.” Aivu wagged her tail excitedly.
“Yay! That’s such fun magic!”
“There is no universe where I wouldn’t stay with you when you asked, Aoife,” Arueshalae said earnestly.
Anevia nodded in agreement.
“Thank you.” Aoife’s eyes were watering again. “Well,” she said, uncapping the bottle, “no time to lose, I guess. Bottoms up!”
As she drank the elixir, Aoife’s wings began to flutter, causing her to float into the air. The motes of light that always surrounded her glowed brighter, and began to flash pink, green, purple, and gold. Light swirled around and into her, almost as brightly as it did when her mythic powers grew.
The main sensation Aoife felt was one of warmth. Her entire body felt warm and relaxed, even as the other three watched her features start to morph. Her face softened, her proportions shifted, and she felt her least favorite part of her physical form disappear and change into what she had always wanted there.
Aivu squealed with joy as Aoife descended back to the ground. The lights went back to their normal hues and brightness. Once she landed, Aoife stumbled. Anevia jumped forward to stabilize her.
“Oh, shit, I forgot to mention. The first few hours you’ll be a bit shaky. Your new muscles aren’t used to this body yet. They’ll get there soon, but for now I recommend you stay in bed.” She winked at Arueshalae, who blushed deeply, then nodded.
Aoife reached over to lean on Arue, looked in the mirror, and wept.
She finally saw herself looking back.
