best cdramas I’ve watched since the last one of these posts in 2023 (and some I’m still looking forward to seeing)
A League of Nobleman (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on AppleTV | watch on Viki | watch on bilibili | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the novel "The Mystery of Zhang Guo" (张公案) by Da Feng Gua Guo (大风刮过) starring Jing BoRan, Song WeiLong, Hong Yao, Guo Cheng and Wang Duo. Definitely gay, but in like a very focused, we-have-a-mystery-to-solve way. Loved the acting and the plot; cannot believe people actually gave Song Weilong shit for his acting in this drama. He was aMAzing. The downside is that the editing grew progressively sloppier as the drama progressed, and although majority of the visuals were very satisfying, I never realized how crappy the quality of the light was until I tried gifing some of the scenes. The upside is Jing BoRan holding kittens. Enough Said. 7/10
The Blood of Youth (watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the novel "Shao Nian Ge Xing" (少年歌行) by Zhou Mu Nan (周木楠) starring Li HongYi, Liu XueYi and Ao RuiPeng. Love this goddamn drama. I adopted the entire cast within the first 3 episodes and then I spent the next 37 terrified that half of them would get killed off. There’s def some major character death in this drama my chickens, so keep that in mind (and not a canonical death either, from what I understand). Anyway, this is my fave genre by far so I’m never really picky, but this drama is exhilarating and gorgeous from beginning to end. Highly recommend. 9/10
New Life Begins (watch on iQIYI | watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the web novel "Qing Chuan Ri Chang" (清穿日常) by Duo Mu Mu Duo (多木木多) starring Bai JingTing and Tian XiWei. Just sweet and fluffy. The plot is easy and devoid of complexities, but very satisfying nonetheless. The acting is definitely on another level. The entire cast has bonkers chemistry, and it’s about time someone made good use of Bai Jingting’s comedy potential. One of the top 5 easy viewing dramas on my rewatch list.  8/10
The Legendary Life of Queen Lau (watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the web novel "Huang Hou Liu Hei Pang" (皇后刘黑胖) by Ge Yang (戈鞅) starring Li JiaQi and Li HongYi. Loved this. Although it doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects, this is basically a comedy from beginning to end. Not gonna lie, I mainly gave this a go for Li Hongyi, but it’s hard to even notice him when Li Jiaqi is in the room. There’s no shame in being overshadowed by superior talent :) 7/10
(yeah, after all this, I rewatched Nirvana In Fire again)
Under the Microscope (watch on Apple TV | watch on Bilibili | watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) Adapted from the novel "Xian Wei Jing Xia De Da Ming" (显微镜下的大明) by Ma Bo Yong (马伯庸) starring Zhang RuoYun and Wang Yang. Continuously impressed by Zhang RuoYun’s skills. This drama is 90% grit and tension. Drool-worthy visuals. Interesting plot. Sound mixing that gives me a Mo Ran style boner. Make your friends watch it and they will hate you. 9/10
Till The End of The Moon (watch on YouTube | watch on Apple TV | watch on Viki) Adapted from the web novel "Hei Yue Guang Na Wen BE Ju Ben" (黑月光拿稳BE剧本) by Teng Luo Wei Zhi (藤萝为枝). Starring Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu. This was so breathtakingly gorgeous. The chemistry between the actors, the visuals, the special effects, the costumes, everything is stunning in this drama. The romance is by no means original, but still manages to draw you in. Absolutely worth watching at least once. 8/10

Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!
I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!
Finished polls: Xing/Rong/Nan/Ren/Pan/Qu/Fu/Sui/Tan/You/Sima/Xuan/Chang/Xun/Shangguan/Jian/Qian/Shu/Xi/Yuwen/Cai/Sha/Yin/Ceng/Helian/Zeng/Lou/Mi/Ji/Ping/Tong/Tuoba/Ge/Murong/Hei/Niu/Tao/Si/Pang/Zi/Gongsun/Mao/Qing/Lian

Summary:
There was a little boy.
He was tiny, not even reaching Shen Jiu’s hips. His face was smeared with dirt and grime, his cheeks sunken in, and hair cut messily short. A slave brand was barely visible on the nape of his neck. Shen Jiu’s heart squeezed as he stared at the tiny child. There was a pang of familiarity as the boy raised his head and their eyes met. Green met green and Shen Jiu inhaled sharply. The boy looked the same as Shen Jiu did when he was younger. Scrawny and sharp. Mouth already turning down into a scowl as he stared defiantly back at the cultivator before him.
Shen Jiu had no inherent love for children. He tolerated the other disciples on Qing Jing Peak for his Shizun’s sake but found himself away from them whenever possible. The familial feeling inside his heart was new and reminded him of the love he once had for Qi-ge. Five seconds after meeting this brat and he already wanted to pinch his cheeks and ensure that he was healthy and happy.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Spread the self-love!
Babbit babbling ahead!
The story that pulled me into writing fanfic was Scum Villain Self-Saving System. I won't say my first or second fic is my favorite, though; both have flaws that I'm not ashamed of but mean they're not up to snuff. Since then I've written for Scum Villain, Modao Zushi and Heaven Official's Blessing, as well as for Dao Mo Biji (AKA the Graverobber's chronicles)
1) What Is Not Said
The Scum Villain universe is changed by the simple matter of Liu Qingge rescuing Shen Jiu from the Qing before Shen Jiu is driven to homicide. This results in Shen Jiu getting the training he needed when he needed it and shifts the course events away from ever needing a Shen Yuan to fix things. (I may, one day, address what happens with Shen Yuan, but not any time soon.)
The title comes from the line, "Communication is the understanding of what is not said." Since lack of communication is the primary cause of death in Moxiang Tongshu's works, this fic is all about properly communicating.
2) Different Paths to the Same Route
In a world where Nie Mingjue kills (sort of) his 3rd sworn brother, he and Lan Xichen work together to save Jin Guangyao's spirit and - when he's mostly restored to them - to prevent Jin Guangshan's plans for the cultivational world from wreaking havoc. Just this once, almost everybody lives.
The title is based on a Modao Zushi music video called Different Paths, in part because despite the changes, certain fixed events are fixed and still sort of happen.
3) Moxiang Tongxiu Crack and Drabbles
As the title says, this is a huge compilation of short fics based on various of Moxiang Tongxiu's works. Some are silly little fics, some a bit more serious. Not really drabbles, perhaps, but so it goes.
Some of the fics form the basis for other fics but those aren't finished and (I'm sorry) may never be because they're sitting there laughing at me.
4) The Wang Who Came In From The Cold
I've been pretty focused on Daomo Biji lately, so most of my more recent fics come from there. This one posits that Wang Can from Sand Sea (1) survives, (2) is Liu Sang's 'twin', and (3) what would happen if he showed up at Wushanjiu after rescuing Xiaomai from thugs.
It has a follow up, wherein Yan Sanxing is their parent and is rescued from durance very cold and vile and the truth about their family is revealed.
5) Alias Yue and Huo
Another Daomo Biji fic, yet another focused on Wang Can. (I love Liu Sang but Wang Can is so FUN to write!) Here Wang Can falters in his escape from Wang Pangzi, Xiuxiu and the Blue Robed Master, and ends up revealing his Zhang kinship and joining Wang Pangzi on a trip to Changbai. Liu Sang makes an appearance later, but the focus is on the buddy trip.
Could be a ship fic if one wants it to be, it's certainly implied later, but the primary goal is understanding.
Title comes from Wang Pangzi and Wang Can's given names. Pangzi's actual name is Yue Ban, whose characters together become Pang, or fat. Can is made up of the characters for fire and mountain, so they used the aliases Yue and Huo on their trip.
----
It was hard to choose which fics to highlight here. My preferences change depending on my mood.
And now the tagging... @pearlpugly, @littlesmartart, @foxofninetales, @sharkbeneaththelotus, @merinnan

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the first round, there will be 55 "byes" (the ones who do not have byes were randomly determined, but all were one submission preliminary winners). There was an exact tie between Erina and Robert from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Willow and Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so they both made the bracket! Also, there was so much passion for Agent Beakley and Scrooge McDuck that I just had to include them! So in total, there are 73 competitors. Rebels and liars in the time of Wang Mang (HHS)
[HHS011]
1st Year of Tianfeng [14 AD], there was in Haiqu in Langye a Mother Lü whose son was a county functionary. He committed a minor crime and the magistrate sentenced him to death.
The Continued Book of Han says: Mother Lü's son was named Yu. He became a patrol officer and committed a crime.
Mother Lü hated the magistrate and secretly assembled retainers, plotting to take revenge. Mother's family was habitually lavish, with wealth and property of several millions. She therefore increasingly brew and sold wine, and bought blades, swords, clothes, and garments. To those youths who came to buy wine she always sold to on credit. Those of them she saw were poor, she immediately lent clothes and never asked about the amount. After several years, the wealth she used was rather exhausted and the youths wished each other to repay her. Mother Lü, tears flowing, said:
The reasons for my generosity to you, my lords, was not that I wished to seek profit. It is merely that since the county magistrate has not the Way, he unjustly killed my son. I wish to be repaid for my hatred and that is all. Could it be that you, my lords, would take pity on me!
The youths were bold of thought and also had for a long time accepted her kindness, they all consented and approved. Those among them who were brave soldiers titled themselves “fierce tigers”.
The Eastern Watchtower Records says: “The retainers, Xu Cizi [?] and others, titled themselves 'throttling the tiger'”. … The strength to throttle tigers speaks of their bravery.
Thereupon they gathered each other and obtained several tens to a hundred people, and following that entered into the sea together with Mother Lü. They attracted and joined with fugitives, and their multitude reached several thousand people. Mother Lü titled herself General, she guided the troops return to attack Haiqu, and seized the county magistrate. The various functionaries bowed their heads and made pleadings for the magistrate. The Mother said:
My son committed a minor crime and did not deserve to die, and yet he was killed by magistrate. Killers deserve to die, what is there to plead for again?
Thereupon she beheaded him, and used his head to sacrifice at her son's grave. Then she returned within the sea.
Several years later, a native of Langye, Fan Chong, rose with troops at Ju, his multitudes was more than a hundred people. He moved to enter Taishan and titled himself Thrice Elder.
The Eastern Watchtower Records says: Fan Chong, courtesy name Xijun.
At the time there was in Qing and Xu great hunger, and robbers and thieves rose up like bees. Multitude bandits considered Chong to be brave and fierce, and everyone adhered to him. In the span of a single year they reached more than ten thousand people. Pang An a native of the same commandery as Chong, and Xu Xian, Xie Lu, and Yang Yin, natives of Donghai, each rose with troops, several ten thousand people combined, and then guided them to follow Chong. Together they turned back to attack Ju, but were unable to bring it down and moved to plunder until Gumu. Following that, the struck Wang Mang's Marquis of Tantang, Tian Kuang, greatly routed him, killed more than ten thousand people, and thereupon moved north to enter Qing province. Where they passed by, they pillaged and plundered. They turned back to Taishan, and halted to station at Nancheng.
Earlier, Chong and others had become robbers due to poverty and destitution, and they had no plans for attacking cities or seizing territory. Their multitudes then gradually grew abundant, and they therefore made a pledge with each other: Those who killed people would die, those who injured people would compensate for the wound. They considered spoken expressions to be binding agreements and had no written documents, banners or flags, divisions or subunits, titles or orders. Those among them who were the most respected were titled Thrice Elder, next was Attendant, next was Footsoldier. In general they addressed [themselves] to each other as Your Subject.
At the end of Wang Mang, in the southern regions there were hunger and famine. People in numerous crowds entered the wild marshes to dig up water chestnuts and eat them, and furthermore raid and plunder each other. Two natives of Xinshi, Wang Kuang and Wang Feng, fairly sorted out disputes and accusations, and thereupon were pushed forward as chieftains with multitudes of several hundred people.
[Water chestnut = Eleocharis dulcis, a marsh-growing sedge.]
And so various fugitives, Ma Wu, Wang Cheng, Cheng Dan, and others went and followed them. Together they attacked dispersed villages and hamlets, and [collected] the plunder within Lülin [lit. “Green Forest”]. After several months, they had reached seven or eight thousand people.
[HHS022]
Ma Wu, courtesy name Zizhang, was a native of Huyang in Nanyang. In the time of his youth, to escape an enemy, he lived as a retainer in Jiangxia. At the end of Wang Mang, when the Thrice Elders of Jingling and Xiyang raised troops in the region of the commandery, Wu went to follow them. Later he entered within the Green Forest.
The Eastern Watchtower Records says: His ancestors were natives of Hu [in Youfufeng]. Chang's father Bo during the reigns of [Emperors] Cheng [r. 33 – 7 BC] and Ai [7 – 1 BC] moved as a retainer to Wuyang in Yingchuan, and following that had his family there.
[HHS015]
Wang Chang, courtesy name Yanqing, was a native of Wuyang in Yingchuan. At the end of Wang Mang, he took revenge for his younger brother and became fugitive in Jiangxia. Some time later he raised troops together with Wang Feng, Wang Kuang, and others within the Green Forest of Yundu. They assembled a multitude of several ten thousand people, and used Chang as a subordinate officer to attack nearby counties.
[HHS012]
Wang Chang, also named Lang, was a native of Handan in Zhao state. He had a long-standing expertise in making divinations and assessments. When a bright star passed through, he took it to be that north of the He had the aura of the Son of Heaven. At the time King Mu of Zhao's son Lin was fond of strange techniques. He revelled in chivalry in the area of Zhao and Wei. He often associated with the bold and the crafty, and then was on personal and close terms with Lang.
Earlier, when Wang Mang usurped the throne, there was within Chang'an someone who claimed to be Emperor Cheng's son Ziyu, Mang killed him. Lang relied on this to falsely claim he was the real Ziyu, stating his mother in the past was a singer for Emperor Cheng. Once when going down from the throne hall she became dead stiff. In a moment a yellow aura had followed her up and down. After half a day she loosened up. Thereupon she conceived and personally went to a guest-house [to give birth]. Empress Zhao wanted to kill him, but he was deceptively exchanged with another person's child, and due to that managed to stay safe.
The Eastern Watchtower Records says: “A palace girl gave birth to a child at the precisely same time as her, and she promptly exchanged it.”
Yu at the age of twelve learned his destiny from the Gentleman-at-Centre Li Manqing and they went together to Shu. At seventeen he came to Danyang, at twenty he returned to Chang'an. In turn he moved to Zhongshan, and came and went in Yan and Zhao, to wait for Heaven's time.
Lin and others became more and more doubtful and confused. They therefore exchanged plans with the great and prominent of Zhao state, Li Yu, Zhang Can, and others, plotting together to install Lang.

[Comm] BingJiu (Slight NSFW)
Luo Binghe wakes to the smell of perfume so sickeningly sweet his throat threatens to close up.
He springs up in bed, immediately knowing somehow that he isn’t with Shen Qingqiu. It’s dark wherever he is, and once his eyes adjust, he bites his tongue so hard he tastes blood.
Women. /Naked/ women.
All piled around where he lay just before. What’s more, he’s not in the bamboo house or anywhere near Qing Jing Peak. In fact, if he didn’t know any better, he’d say he’s in the demon realm.
“Where’s Shizun?” He can’t help but ask aloud, hoping that just by saying his name he’ll appear and explain what the hell is going on.
One of the many women stirs, rubbing at her eyes before blinking them open to look at him. Luo Binghe immediately shuts his eyes.
He knows that face, but he’s never seen her in such a state (nor has he ever wanted to), but now the image of her perky, milky tits won’t leave his mind.
/I wonder what Shizun would look like if he–/ Luo Binghe slaps his cheeks to stop his train of thought. /Right now your priority is to find Shizun!/
When he finally finds Shen Qingqiu, it’s far down a dank and dark hallway. He only notices the small opening because there’s a small whimper. Luo Binghe’s often heard these whimpers in his ear or above him when he and Shen Qingqiu…
/Shizun is enjoying himself without me!/ Luo Binghe rushes toward the sounds and when he finally lays eyes on Shen Qingqiu, his stomach twists and his mouth tastes of blood.
Shen Qingqiu is strung up by ropes. One of his legs is missing and the opposing arm is also missing. The stumps are crude and Luo Binghe’s sure at least one of the wounds is infected.
“Shiz…un?” Luo Binghe’s chest hurts so bad that he can’t take a step toward Shen Qingqiu for a few moments. When he finally has ahold of himself, he approaches Shen Qingqiu.
Shen Qingqiu notices him right away and rather than offer that small familiar smile, there’s a snarl mixed with a fearful gaze. Shen Qingqiu opens his mouth as if to shout something, but only garbled sounds come out because he has no tongue.
“Who did this to you?” Luo Binghe demands angrily, his forehead growing hot.
If possible, Shen Qingqiu’s glare grows colder. Luo Binghe chooses to ignore it in favor for untying Shen Qingqiu. He catches his body before it can fall even though Shen Qingqiu’s remaining arm beats at his chest.
“Poor Shizun, in such a condition; the disciple will take care of you.”
Luo Binghe lays Shen Qingqiu down gently and starts to check for more injuries, ignoring the sounds of protest. Though it was the worst time of his life, Luo Binghe’s thankful for the knowledge he has on healing due to Shen Qingqiu self-detonating.
In no time, Shen Qingqiu has new limbs and a small tongue. It’s only after all this has been done that Shen Qingqiu finally speaks his first words to Luo Binghe.
“Get away from me, you wretched beast!”
Luo Binghe’s chest pangs for a different reason as Shen Qingqiu glowers at him, trying to move out of his range of reach.
“Why is Shizun being so cold to this disciple?” Luo Binghe asks desperately, feeling confusion and anger in his mind.
Shen Qingqiu looks at him as if he’s grown several heads. His eyes narrow into slants, a look on his face Luo Binghe hasn’t seen since his early days as a disciple. Back when Shen Qinqiu…
/Is this…/ Luo Binghe’s anger evaporates as he realizes while this is Shen Qingqiu, it’s not /his/ Shen Qingqiu. And therefore there must be another Luo Binghe that’s done this to /this/ Shen Qingqiu.
“I promise you that this disciple is not the one you are used to,” Luo Binghe says, ignoring the scoff Shen Qingqiu lets out in response. “And I’ll prove it.”

Bitch by Meredith Brooks (don't judge me it's catchy lol)
This turned out a little angsty but it's burial mounds days, Wei Wuxian POV. Not edited at all and completely unchanged from how it came out when writing it, so if some of it doesn't make sense, that's why.
---
Wei Wuxian looked over the burial mounds, expression blank, he watched as the Wen remnants worked over the land, sewed up cloth, carried wood, and hammered down nails for houses.
This definitely wasn't how Wei Wuxian thought he would end up.
It wasn't how he thought the war would end.
It definitely wasn't how he thought he'd live, if he survived the war at all.
A shout of excitement caught his attention, A-Yuan was sitting with Wen Ning, giggling at the man as he drew shapes in the dirt with a stick.
Wei Wuxian felt a pang in his chest.
He couldn't believe how sweet and happy A-Yuan could be here, in this place of death and resentment.
Jiang Yanli always told him he was born with a smile on his face, but he believed A-Yuan deserves that title more.
He couldn't bring himself to smile much anymore these days, the emptiness in his core and the whirlwind of negative thoughts kept that from him.
Just yesterday he snapped at granny for dropping and breaking a bowl. He felt instantly awful about it, but granny didn't blame him which just made him feel worse.
Wen Qing sighed as she stepped up to him.
"Wei Wuxian. Don't think too hard about it. We are all having a difficult time."
Wei Wuxian didn't reply, just kept watching A-Yuan until the boy looked up and smiled at him.
Maybe Wei Wuxian couldn't save everyone, but he would damn well do his best trying. If only to keep that smile on A-Yuan.
The other sects may not like it, but Wei Wuxian will do anything to keep A-Yuan alive.
Even if that means becoming a monster to them.
---
The lyrics don't directly determine what I wrote, I just went with what comes to me when listening to the song, but I hope you liked this! ^^
---
send me a 🎵 and i’ll put my music on shuffle and write a short one shot based on the song that comes on

Today's translation #80
Yuri!!! on Life
Sayo Yamamoto x Mitsurou Kubo conversation
Part 2.
K: One more thing. I often got asked during interviews "How did it happen that you started to like figure skating so much?", but actually I don't know that much about figure skating. I often answered that "it's the director who knows much more about figure skating than me", so I think it'd be a good idea to once again ask you about your history with figure skating.
Y: So we start from the topic of my history with figure skating (laugh)?
K: Your history with figure skating or should I say, I want to start with asking you about your formative experiences which led you to making an anime about figure skating.
Y: Formative experiences… Something like a first emotion related to making an anime about figure skating that I had, was that real-life competitions are so interesting that making an anime about figure skating is a ridiculous idea and I wasn't even thinking about it. But gradually I couldn't stop myself… Little by little, I started including figure skating in my works, which had no relation to figure skating. Without explicitly announcing anything like: "This is figure skating!", I was satisfied with having just a little bit of figure skating showing up. I made Lupin do a spiral, female swordsman do a triple axel, in a fight of two thugs I made them do a death spiral (pairs' element) (laugh).
K: Sounds like it would be very effective in a fight. Even the name "death spiral" sounds like it could do a lot of damage.
Y: Yeah (laugh). I was very pushy showing everyone Pang Qing and Tong Jian' performances during staff meetings… So every time, I was including actions scenes that weren't in the screenplay for my self-satisfaction. But even that started to not be enough… In 2012, in the middle of production of "Lupin the 3rd: The woman called Fujiko Mine" the idea to make an TV anime series completely about just my beloved figure skating awakened in me. But, a long time had to pass before people willing to work with me on that appeared.
[Next part is also about figure skating~]

周相公可憐則個吧
Zhou darling, Please have some pity on me.
金瓶梅(Qin ping mei) Known as The Plum in the Golden Vase or The Golden Lotus by 笑笑生(Xiao xiao sheng). It's really famous chinese classic novel in 明朝(Ming dynasty). Actually the author can be several people because of the stories various time-era like Shakespeare. It has been prohibited by chinese government for some time because of its explicity but because of that 金瓶梅 has read around chinese culture boundaries. The title shows 3 main heroines in the novel; 潘金蓮(Pan jin lian), 李瓶兒(Li ping'er), and 龐春梅(Pang chun mei).
The main story is the hero; 西門慶(xi men qing) is seducing other's wives and take them as his concubines. It shows lewd and insolent human nature of sexuality. Think why it has been prohibited by main government. I would say it's more like smut, very long and detailed one. The line is a bit different that the actual line is,
娘子可憐小人則個
My darling, please have little bit of pity on me.
西門慶 is telling 潘金蓮 about his horny situation, grabbing her clothes. After than they.. they make love, to be honest It's more like animal mating, more details you may find in the book. 金瓶梅 has translated in many different languages so you may find the translation easily. After this mating or physical aesthetic activity, whatever they had, 潘金蓮 became 西門慶's 5th concubine. Yes 5th. Remember Confucius universe? it's not even a shameful thing at all, I would say rather commom custom.
Tumblr media
I don't know if Zhou zishu had read 金瓶梅 or not. His reaction is a bit off isn't it? It's possible he doesn't know what it means with Wen kexing saying things around that it was also his first misfortune to be in this mess, also it is a chance to get to know Zhou zishu better. 으아아아아아아아아아 온객행 이 미친놈ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ or it's just me Zhou zishu wouldn't know the meaning and he calling himself 老子. 크아아아아아아아아 쌍방이야 으아아아아아아 감겼네 감겼어 다 넘어갔네에으아아아아아아아아아아아아
Tumblr media

Hungry for more than bao
Also posted on AO3.
~~
A-Qing's stomach rumbled and she placed her hand against it, as if that could prevent the gurgling from reaching her ears. She eyed the passers-by from her place at the alley's mouth, watching as they ate sugar people and tanghulu sticks and dumplings, the scents of them all reaching her nose and making her nauseous. It always happened whenever she'd gone too long without eating, that her senses rebelled against her, as if trying to prevent her from feeding the hunger within.
She spotted a boy her age, walking down the street alone with a small bag in his hand from which he drew out a pork bun. Her body tensed and prepared to move – years on the street had taught her that opportunities were few and far between, and she had to take advantage of them when she saw them. With a final, steadying breath, she sprang out from her alleyway and ran to the boy, snatching his bag and running off before he even registered what had happened.
She could hear him crying out for his mother as she raced along a well-known path, reaching a ladder and mounting it to the roof. There were murmurs from the crowd now. A-Qing didn't care – she found a spot on the roof that was nice and flat, and pulled out a bun, deciding to watch and see what would happen down below. If anyone had seen her, she needed to know.
Her teeth broke the flesh of the bun, and when the seasoned pork touched her tongue, her stomach began to rebel. She ignored it and chewed faster than she should, knowing that once there was a little food in her that her stomach would settle down.
Down below, a man and a woman made their way through the crowd and over to the little boy's side. He lifted his hands to them and was swept up into the man's arms; the woman ran a loving hand down his back and promised everything would be all right, that she would buy him some more buns and they would even buy him some tanghulu later.
She watched the little family make their way into the crowd, and even as her stomach began to accept the food she was feeding it, there was a pang in her chest like the one that had been in her stomach, an emptiness that the pork buns weren't able to fill.
She shoved another bun into her mouth. What did it matter to them if she ate the boy's food? They had money and could buy whatever they wanted, and she needed to steal for her every meal. That boy didn't know how the real world worked, how his parents would one day tire of him and leave him behind when they left for Heavens knew where, and he would have to fend for himself because no matter how many people pretended to care when a child cried out for help, nobody would ever actually do anything. Everyone worried about themselves over anyone else, and the only way to survive was to do the same.
In fact, she almost felt sorry for the boy. He would no doubt be destroyed when he learned that important lesson because life hadn't prepared him for it. That's what she felt – pity, because one day he would have to learn for himself that he couldn't rely on or trust anybody. That people would not be there for him when he needed them, and he would have nobody but himself to feed him, or clothe him, or comfort him. One day he would be alone, like her, and she wouldn't feel sorry for him then, just as nobody felt sorry for her.
She watched the family round a corner, and then they were out of sight. She swallowed another bite of food and ignored how the filling of her stomach didn't extend to the emptiness in her chest.
