Curious about the Queen Nerdanel AU, if you’d like to share anything about it!
Yay, thank you!
That's also an AU that I'm really excited about, though I have written very little of it. It's (at least for now) a bullet-point fic where instead of leaving Fëanor, Nerdanel finds out early that he put too much of himself in the Silmarils and that he's ill because of it, and she stays. When Morgoth steals the Silmarils, Nerdanel is the one who goes to Beleriand to get them back, taking the role of General and Regent Queen, while Fëanor stays behind and becomes King.
It changes... a lot of things. For now I've mostly written the early parts before they leave, but some characters that would otherwise have gone will stay, and the narrative will follow both sides.
I'm not saying that it's a fix-it, but—yeah, it's a fix-it, actually. I haven't figured out everything yet, but Nerdanel is scarily efficient at putting everyone to work and resolving conflict.
For now, an early snippet:
He falls ill.
Varda’s hallowing will only burn evil, she says. Fëanáro is not evil.
The Ainur perhaps don’t quite understand how Eldar fëar work. Their own eälar can withstand any amount of abuse, and even, as the world will (or would, in a different timeline—that remains to be seen) eventually learn, the most egregious splintering.
It doesn’t burn Fëanáro’s fëa, it just exhausts it.
It makes his temper shorter, he’s prone to bouts of depression, times when he lashes out at seemingly nothing, sensory overload—all things he had before, but much stronger.
And because unlike the Ainur, he’s an incarnate, it affects his hroä as well, and he’s often lethargic, struggling to keep his energy levels constant, and he’s taken by fits of widespread nerve pain.
He isn’t successful at hiding it. The public just wonders why the Crown Prince is making so few appearances, but Nerdanel and the children are worried to see him barely able to get out of bed some days. And Finwë…
All Finwë can think about is Míriel.
As you can see, my fondness for writing disabled characters is coming through once more.
Ask me about my WIPs

🌀 & ☔️?
🌀Post the fic summary for a fic you haven't written/published yet. It can be hypothetical or something you really plan on releasing...
The Great Fever of 432 The sickness comes in the spring. By the end of the summer funeral pyres rise above the pines of Ladros. Baragund and Belegund are twelve and ten, and the summer that plague sweeps through Dorthonion they are sent to live with their Great-aunt Andreth.
☔Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it? If so, what is it?
Best AU Ever - that AU where Míriel rejects Finwë's proposal because she realizes she doesn't love Finwë that much and doesn't want nor have the temperament to be queen of the Noldor before she dies and chooses to be reembodied. Fëanor never exists. HUZZAH. Nerdanel and Míriel have a deeply bitter and entrenched rivalry for the title of most acclaimed and creative Noldor artisan and inventor. Finwë is just as pettily butthurt about Míriel's rejection as he was when he chose to use the new Noldor S instead of TH, so not only does he do that same as in canon, he is a patron for Míriel's rival, Nerdanel. Canon is about the same except the newly released Melkor is finding the modern art critic rivalries a little less fertile for armed rebellion shit-stirring without Fëanor's resentments. He brainstorms for a bit, looking at Finwë and Indis's children, and notices that there is a large untapped resentment-driven political divide to exploit: Olwë and the Falmari. Use his whispers to remind the Falmari of their kin-obligations and lingering hurt to the Eglath, and once the Two Trees get munched on, it's Olwë and the Falmari having lost faith in the Valar and decamping to sail back to Middle-earth. Finarfin goes with his family and some of FIngolfin's kids. Olwë and Co arrive in Beleriand thinking they're about to be hailed as saviors and get that nice grovelling apology from Elmo. Turns out, hey, Elu is alive and was found, ruling as king with his Maia wife, Elmo got murdered years ago, welcome home cheaters yeah we need your help with the army of evil darkness no we aren't hopping back on your boats Middle-earth is our home plus there's not enough boats for us all -say hi to Dan's people they're back with us too- and our mortal dwarven allies probably can't go and look there's more weirdly bearded mortals but these are taller that just fled over the mountains now help us fight or go back to Valinor and bring back Oromë and Tulkas.

If I had any talent (or patience) I would like to write a Silmarillion AU where Fëanor  does also end up stealing a boat but with the little difference that:
a. he is still a very teenage Fëanor  and
b. it is just one boat - which he has no idea how to steer
In a fit of rage he decides to run away, since no one wants him anyway, everyone prefers his brother, and a boat seems a good option because what have the so called blessed lands of the blessed Valar ever done for him! I mean, which child or teenager has never seriously considered running away? He would have probably reneged on his attempt (as most of us do) but by the time he was clear headed enough, he was already on a boat he had only theoretical knowledge of how to navigate with a brewing storm and a rapidly vanishing shoreline at his back - even if he would never acknowledge it publicly he knew at that point that he had fucked up. The only positive (maybe?) thing about the whole situation being that his fellow apprentice and daughter of his master Nerdanel ended up in said boat with him - trying to stop him of course. If it had been anyone else Fëanor  would have been quick to blame them for “distracting him with their arguing” and therefore being responsible for the boat coming off course but Nerdanel was the only person next to Mathan himself he would not dare to accuse of this. By some luck or divine providence (or divine spite? or Ulmo just not noticing?) they end up being washed all the way back to Middle Earth where they meet distant kin, new challenges, adventures and tragedies.
Finwë is inconsolable of course and searches far and wide but he just cannot find his firstborn. Even the Valar do not give him a clear answer to where his son might be found (they themselves are frantic because their sight of Middle Earth is shadowed at this point in time, no one wants to tell Finwë that this, according to Ulmo, is most likely where his missing progeny ended up, and Mandos is frothing at the mouth and not responsive due to destiny currently being a mess of constantly rearranging parts in his brain).
While Fëanor ’s half-siblings do share in their father’s grief they are understandably not as destroyed by this event as their father. As time passes wounds both on this and the other side of the sea start to mend because they are not currently being kept open by proximity. And encountering other elves who know the grief of the death of a parent and seeing how they handle it even the haughty eldest son of  Finwë starts to both understand his own feelings and why his stance towards his father’s decision and siblings’ existence might have to be reconsidered (slightly! At most!), if only that he himself might find peace (his firstborn will still be  Nelyafinwë, reconsidering spite should never go too far). In the depths of my brain, where it will most likely stay, this tale would further include: survival and bickering in Middle Earth, a great deal of inventions (some the same as in the Silmarillion, some new due to circumstance),  Fëanor and Nerdanel slowly falling in love and deciding that being king or queen is vastly overrated, somehow still ending up with their own realm (probably the equivalent of a very very large and well defended university with more holdings) and Fëanor  gets to meet dwarves. More random would be our dearest pyromaniac being astonished how people DARE to call him an arrogant prick! Nerdanel delighting in her friend finally being utterly bad at something (he never ever learns to steer a ship) and Melian wondering if this was actually revenge for not telling her brethren where she went for a few hundred years. Finally, after Melkor’s release he spreads rumours that it was Indis’ faction who got rid of the crown prince and as a results her children vow to find their brother and proof him wrong. This starts a whole new set of issues (which thankfully include grudgingly lent but not stolen ships) but at the end stands a surprisingly successful family reunion. However, Fëanor and his family  refuse to return to Valinor thereby cementing the Noldorin presence in Middle Earth. (”The only happiness I ever found in Valinor, father, was your love and joy, my wife and my craft. My wife and craft have come with me to these shores and much more happiness then I had ever hoped for has sprung from the lands that others had proclaimed unworthy. Long ago I could not understand your decision to remarry, but now, after all this time I find my views much changed. As you once chose happiness, partnership and a future that seemed worth living, knowing that it would hurt one you love yet not diminishing that love, I, too, have now come to make the same decision. And as I now know and understand your choice, I hope you too will understand the decision I made to not return to Valinor, even though I love you and do not want to cause you grief” - yo, or something along those lines. I have no idea.). Would I ever get to it, it would be very very self-indulgent, with a happy (or at least bitter-sweet) ending for everyone and Beleriand not vanishing under tons of water. But, yeah. I have no patience or talent. So, this is probably all I will ever write down regarding this matter.

Canon divergent AU where the story seems the same up until the hosts of Valinor arrive in the War of Wrath. They’re led by Nerdanel. Feanor was the last officially crowned king - you need half the population at the coronation for it to be valid, and literally 90% of the Noldor left Tirion. So they can’t crown Finarfin, and Nerdanel has just been Dowager Empressing for the past 500 years.

I came here from AO3 because of all the amazing AUs you write and then looking at your WIP lists and seeing 'If Galadriel was Fëanor's daughter' and I am just shooketh by how amazing that concept is and how it could suit her very well. It could further justify her being banned from Valinor until the end of the Third Age (because she definitely would have been a major leader of the Flight and young Galadriel was hungry for power and definitely had pride issues) and the hair incident could go very differently and I do wonder what Fëanor and her would have created, it would be both terrible and beautiful I think? But if it does go the same way it's just the Silmarils have her hair in it, would she swear the Oath? How would the First Age sort of change? Ah, I'm rambling a lot, I'm sorry but seeing that concept just got me ridiculously excited. Thanks!
Okay, so this response is unjustifiably late. I kept hoping I could respond to this with full fledged fic, but . . . *waves hand vaguely at writer's block.*
Yesterday, I did actually manage to write a bullet point fic about this!
It was probably the most awkwardly written thing I've made in years. So we're just going to shelve that for a while, and in the meantime, let's look at the highlights of what I think would change:
- First off, in this AU it's not just that Galadriel is Feanor's daughter now; we're pulling a full on switcheroo. Finrod and co. are Feanor's kids, Fingon and co and Finarfin's kids, and Maedhros and co. are Fingolfin's kids.
- That established, Galadriel is definitely the child of Feanor that is most like her father. This means that (a) he spend a lot of time teaching her stuff and (b) as she gets older, they spend a lot of time arguing. As a consequence, Galadriel is the only kid that doesn't start worrying when Nerdanel and Feanor start arguing; she argues with him all the time and that hasn't changed anything! So she's also the most taken aback when Nerdanel leaves.
- Despite all the arguing, Galadriel says yes during the Hair Incident on the condition that she gets to be involved. It IS beautiful and it IS useful, but it doesn't at first change anything too major.
- When her brothers yield the crown, Galadriel goes to Doriath. She has no interest in sticking around for that. Even once news of Alqualonde comes out, she's allowed to stay because it's presumed she wasn't involved.
- Galadriel stays there and stays out of things until one by one her brothers - her Oath sworn brothers - fail and fall and die.
- She helps keep Doriath together when Thingol falls and Melian flees. She uses the artifact from the Hair Incident to weave new defenses, and she organizes things, and soon she's more or less unofficially in charge.
- And then one of her people that was scouting on the borders comes to her with urgent news: Dior is coming to claim his crown. And he's bringing the Silmaril.
- Galadriel had not sworn the Oath. She had refused to bind herself like that.
- But her brothers had. Her father had. And now they'll be trapped forever in Eternal Darkness.
- Unless.
- No one else knows Dior is coming.
- And she is kin, whatever else she is. If she takes up the gem, if she can get the others, perhaps she can yet save her family.
- (And it would not be the first time. Whatever anyone else thought, in this universe, her hands were not clean at Alqualonde.)
- The Silmaril helps her strengthen her borders significantly. Those in Doriath who see her wearing it take to outright referring to her as their Queen. Dear cousin Maedhros, still scrambling after the Nirnaeth, is happy to recognize her; he's just glad to have someone with Noldorin interests at heart on the Sindarin throne.
- No one asks too many questions about whatever happened to Luthien's son.

Masterlist of my Tolkien Fics & FanComics
To Be Loved: Before she was born, it was foretold that Princess Lothiriel would suffer greatly from the love of men. Her mother's dying words were words of power, to keep her daughter safe from suffering, to never trust the love of men. Now the Princess Lothiriel has become the Queen of the Riddermark. And though her heart is filled with love, will she learn to accept the love others have for her?
When Fate Calls - Princess Lothíriel of Dol Amroth volunteers as a nurse and is assigned to the Third Marshal of Rohan's army. At first, no one takes the princess seriously, thinking she's one of those Great Lady Nurses, all show and no backbone, but she quickly proves them wrong, and Éomer, Third Marshal of the Riddermark, can't help but be inexplicably drawn to the feisty princess. Faramir is the Captain of the Rangers of Gondor and is assigned to train new recruits, one of whom is a young soldier named Dernhelm from Rohan. The two quickly become friends and comrades in arms, though Faramir begins suspecting that Dernhelm has a secret that he's not divulging. And as time goes by, Faramir can't deny the feelings he's starting to develop for Dernhelm... Éowyn is tired of being left behind while those she cares about risk their lives for the greater good. She wishes for nothing else than to fight for her people's freedom and survival. She disguises herself as a man named Dernhelm and joins the Gondorian army, where she meets and befriends her superior officer, Faramir. Things get complicated when the two start falling in love... WWI inspired LOTR AU.
Of Fate, Thistle, and Twine - Princess Lothíriel of Dol Amroth is soon-to-be-betrothed to King Éomer of Rohan. Will she manage to escape this loveless match? Or will she fianally accept the match and find love despite it all?
A Lady of the Sea - When Finduilas and Dol Amroth is sent to Minas Tirith to prepare for her impending marriage to Denethor II, her traveling party is attacked with herself as the only survivor. Mistaken as a soldier, Finduilas enlists into her betrothed's army in disguise to delay preparing for marriage to him. Finduilas must not only train to be a soldier, but keep everyone, especially her future husband, from finding out who she really is... [Finduilas/Denethor]
Across the River Isen - When a Dunlending girl is captured by Prince Elfwine of Rohan and brought to Helm's Deep for trial for theft, events are sprung into action that will spell change across the lands.
The Northern Princess - Prince Elboron of Gondor and Princess Yevona of Dale are arranged to be married. A year before they are to be married, Princess Yevona travels to Gondor to prepare for her future as the future wife of Prince Elboron. Can love grow between these two strangers?
A Re-Acquaintance of Disaster - Her elder sister claimed the son of the steward was the most handsome man she had ever seen, and that it was impossible for any young lady not to fall in love with him, but Finduilas was determined not to agree. After all, Denethor II was stuffy, proud and boring, and rude to boot. After a fateful misunderstanding, she was determined to despise the man for the remainder of her days--falling in love with him had not been part of the plan.
True to the Heart - When Fëanor stays in a small seaside village to rest while on his journeys, the last thing he was expecting to happen was to meet Nerdanel, an elf-maid who would one day capture his heart, and vice versa.
The Bastard King - A comforting night with a stranger on the eve of the march to the Battle at the Black Gate has left Princess Lothíriel with a child. Little does she know that this stranger is the new King of Rohan, Éomer.
Fan Comics:
Romance in Rivendell: A slice of life styled romance in Rivendell between Lady Celebrían and Lord Elrond. Humor and misunderstandings galore :)
A Dance: The daughter of Aragorn/Arwen and the daughter of Faramir/Eowyn discover they may share similar feelings for each other...

Exploration of a Maglor AU - part 2 - Thangorodrim
Part 1 Part 3
So, Maedhros gets taken - is Maglor the High Queen? - The alternative is Celegorm - which … doesn’t work - because 1) everyone. everyone. agrees that Maglor would be better at leading than Celegorm - Celegorm is all too happy to agree, preferring his freedom. Curufin does occasionally challenge Maglor’s authority, but with 3 other brothers (Celegorm doesn’t really care to involve himself) and 90% of the army backing her, it doesn’t amount to much more than dissent.
(I also subscribe to the headcanon that Feanorians are in general more supportive of gender equality when it comes to succession because 1) Nerdanel 2) Feanor has always been more respectful and supportive of Findis’s opinions and place in succession after him (not that he thought it would come to mean anything besides proving a point at the time) - in part to spite Fingolfin, but mainly because Findis is more than capable and she’s lowkey his favourite sibling despite a tumultuous relationship in the beginning.)
The main point of contention is rescuing Maedhros. All of her brothers are aching to unleash their fire on Morgoth and take Maedhros back. (They know at the back of their minds that it won’t end well for any of them, but right now all they can feel is guilt guilt guilt and they need to do something.) The only thing they can all agree on is that the Ambarrusa must not go. Maglor being adamant that none of her brothers go off to volunteer as Balrog bait is the source of many (prideful) angry shouting matches.
“Fine, you think there’s a chance that you can walk in there, have tea with the enemy and bring our brother back? Then I’ll do it. That’s the precedent, after all”
Silence in the room. She grabs a sword and marches out of the tent. Fury and desperation lining each of her steps. They follow her, unsure at first, then in a run when they realised just how serious she was. A barricade forms in front of her.
“No, please, you’re right, ” Curufin said, voice soft.
“We need you here.” said Caranthir as he kept an iron grip on her wrist.
“Please don’t go” Amrod whispered. “Don’t leave us too”
There was resigned silence on the matter after.

Commission of Finwë, Mirfinwë and Nolofinwë by ArlenianChronicles (reposted with permission), for my fanfic A Feast of Ashes.
“Do you want to hear a secret?”
“If you tell her a secret, Narya, I fear it won’t stay a secret for much longer,” Nerdanel said fondly. I denied indignantly. It was true I was a blabbermouth, but I could keep secrets if they were important enough and said so with much conviction. “Alright, alright. I think Lalwendë wants to know the big secret.”
Fëanaro’s silver eyes focused back on me. I felt like an onion being peeled from its layers until he could feel confident enough that I wouldn’t betray him.
“When I was Ingoldo’s age,” he said, using Arafinwë’s mother-name, “I had an imaginary friend who was also my older brother. His name was Mirfinwë. He looked a lot like father, he loved being High Prince. He was very smart, reliable and steadfast. He was born in Cuivienen and he could tell a lot of amazing stories about the Journey.” Finwë talked very little about the Journey. Stereotyped tales were available but it was like every single person who came from Cuivienen was unwilling to expand on them. I was not surprised that Fëanaro had been frustrated as a child. “He did all the tedious work and I dreamt of spending all my time studying and making things.”
It is funny when I think about it now. Fëanaro’s imaginary older brother was everything Nolofinwë became, everything he hated in his little brother. But Mirfinwë was not a son of Indis, and Miriel was not dead in his childhood fantasies.
In Fëanor’s fix-it AU, Mirfinwë married Indis and was the father of all his half-sisters and half-brothers. In A Feast of Ashes Fëanor dreams several time of this, including a scene in which Queen Miriel commissionned a portrait of Finwë, the Crown Prince and his heir.

Queen Nerdanel AU, please, for the WIP game? Thank you!
So many for Nerdanel! I'm glad, she deserves all the love, but unfortunately I have very little of it written xD
I've chatted a bit about it here, but here's an extra snippet:
Maitimo tries to close all of his bonds, but Nerdanel refuses.
She holds him in her mind. She exhausts herself trying to take his pain.
She loves him oh so much. How can she let her child suffer, when she can do something, anything about it?
She can’t save him, but she can do this.
It’s not long before she’s bedridden as often as Fëanáro, or more. Ñolofinwë takes over a lot of the ruling, while trying to convince her to stop, but she won’t. Not for anything.
Maitimo tries to get her to stop, too, but in the night he rests enveloped in her fëa and weeps.
I'm not entirely sure that it will make it into the final version, I haven't quite decided which way I want to go for this part of the story yet. But I wrote it anyway.
Ask me about my WIPs

my girl aredhel for the character ask
How I feel about this character: LOVE HER. ICONIC. AMAZING. DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER. but seriously i love that she doesn’t take anyone’s shit and is confident and adventurous and smart. tolkien was a coward to kill her off, she could have saved beleriand tbh. (also, High Queen Aredhel of the Noldor after Turgon dies? her and Idril leading the refugees to safety? Maeglin with a mother who loves him and helps him find a place for himself in Gondolin? yes PLEASE.)
All the people I ship romantically with this character: WELL, as will surprise absolutely NOBODY who knows me and my tendency to make all my favs arospec, i see Aredhel as aromantic…BUT that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a good Rissi ship! I think she and Tyelko have a lot of potential, not romantically but as FWB, and I’ve written Aredhel/Nerdanel and enjoyed it. Really i’m down for whatever - I can even get into Aredhel/Eol if it’s handled with care. My favorite version of their relationship is one that started off intense and passionate and then soured as they realized they weren’t good for each other….not one that was abusive or nonconsensual from the get go. also, preferably without the racist undertones, yikes.
that’s a long winded way of saying i don’t have any particular Aredhel OTPs, but i’m interested in any shipping prospects that involve her - you’ve just gotta convince me!
My non-romantic OTP for this character: her and literally any lady character! (though i am also very much interested in a romantic relationship with her and lady characters, lol.) She and Galadriel were born the same year and since their fathers didn’t have beef between them I imagine they grew up thick as thieves :) I also think that while Fingon doted on Idril, Aredhel was the one who treated her like just a miniature adventuring buddy and would have brought bby!Itarille on hunting trips with her and Tyelko and the Ambarussa if Turgon wouldn’t have thrown a fit about it. I think Aredhel would have been great friends, or perhaps friendly rivals, with Luthien if they’d had the chance - they’re both very strong-willed women who won’t let anyone get in the way of what they want.
of course i’d be remiss not to talk about her friendship with Celegorm and Curufin - I think it’s really wonderful how much she just doesn’t care about the family politics and drama going on and is like “hell yeah, i’m friends with these two feanorian bitches, we’re gonna go prank EVERYONE in tirion!!” i bet galadriel was facepalming watching her and the two Cs run off causing havoc!
and I think the Turgon and Aredhel relationship gets slept on a lot of the time. They were close enough that Aredhel decided that she would go to Gondolin, presumably forever. Obviously things didn’t work out that way, but she clearly loved her brother. They were probably close in age, with Fingon being the “responsible” eldest child of the family (and very much distracted by Maitimo!) and Argon being The Baby - the two middle kids stuck together out of necessity, no matter how different they were in personality. And then after they arrive in Beleriand, with Argon dead and Fingon busy rescuing Maedhros and worrying about politics with their dad, I think they came together even more, especially with Aredhel helping Turgon care for Idril now that Elenwe is dead. I imagine they fought quite often, but there was that intense love for one another underneath it all.
My unpopular opinion about this character: [tw rape mention] Kind of more of an unpopular opinion about Eol, but like I said above, I don’t think their relationship is irredeemable. Tolkien waffled on it enough for me to try and see some happy times in the beginning, and I’m too uncomfortable with the racist stereotypes implied in Tolkien’s characterization of Eol as a Dark Elf rapist to accept that as my personal headcanon. (of course you’re entitled to your own interpretations, but this is mine.) A relationship that had potential but devolved into dysfunctionality is also just more interesting to me- i want to explore what went wrong and why, if it could have been salvaged and how. and if we go with that framework, I don’t think Aredhel is entirely blameless for things going bad - she could be selfish and harsh and unsympathetic, and that makes her a better character, not a worse one.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: that she DIDNT FUCKING DIE. i kind of went off about what i’d like to see in an aredhel lives AU up top but like. COME ON TOLKIEN.
but seriously - in an early draft of TFOG Tolkien mentioned that she was lost in Nan Elmoth after being separated from Turgon’s army in the Nirnaeth, and GIVE ME THAT AREDHEL. give me battered, bloodstained warrior Aredhel limping through a dark and dangerous woods, fighting off spiders all alone, scared but persistent. Give me Aredhel running into Luthien (though that would have to be post-Bragollach, probably), not Eol, and them befriending one another. Give me Aredhel rescuing Eol from some danger, not him enchanting her. Give me Maeglin who grows up alone and lonely, yes, but hearing war stories from his mama, knowing that it’s not his dad that’s keeping them from Gondolin but the dangers of a world where Morgoth is winning and Aredhel not quite knowing where Gondolin is. Give me Aredhel and Eol working together, their marriage falling apart in a way similar to Feanor and Nerdanel’s did, without abuse inherent to the narrative. Give me her actually reuniting with Celegorm and Curufin and them being Maeglin’s weird uncles. Give me them running into mortals like Turin (I am a known Turin/Maeglin slut, after all) and Tuor, and helping them to find Gondolin. Give me an Aredhel who is an active part of the narrative throughout, not dying until the War of Wrath, or maybe even in a Kinslaying fighting against the cousins she used to love so dearly- give me her death in a great and tragic irony, not in a stupid cop-out fridging way like canon.

this is sort of a followup to my numenor question but why dont you like the first miriel? you gave lots of attention to all the other elven women even those only mentioned by tolkien previously, so miriel þerinde seems to be singled out? i am also not sympathetic to feanor or his kids mostly, but miriel exists a lot independent of their posthumous views of her and theres loads to explore without them! you did give nerdanel a lot of love too so im not sure why miriel specifically gets your ire
There's a few posts on miriel deep at the start of my blog - and then relatively more recent ones where I espouse the merits of miriel/daeron and have her as a minor supporting character to interact with Aegnor the Ghost Bounty Hunter. But to go into detail again:
from my very first read-through of the Silm back in 2003, I instantly honed in on Indis as my favorite, with honorably mentions of Dior, Elwing, and Tuor among others. Fëanor about the time he drew a sword on his half-brother had lost the last shred of sympathy or interest and i was waiting for the book to kill him off- which it did do mercifully soon after. So, I read fanfic and HoME for a few years after, still in the early 2000s, and the shipping war/2000s anti-female character mindset means that to find fic sympathetic to Indis and Miriel is hard unless it's f/f. And circa 2013 tumblr there is rather infamous hardcore miriel fans that not only hate indis as a character but write some ugly meta/fics. So i struggle to try to separate miriel from her fans. And like nerdanel, there is a VERY obvious subset of fans that because they like the sons of fëanor, the only female characters that they deem to bother with as worthy is nerdanel and to a lesser existent Miriel and maybe Aredhel and if they ship Haleth with Caranthir (-_-). They only cared about characters that orbited their small number of favs, while claiming that their picks were more feminist. Nerdanel only as 'angry grieving rebel on behalf of her sons and husband railing against the Valar'. So best to just avoid. It didn't help that HoME outlining Miriel's personality was making it obvious as 'root of feanor's personality traits that explain why he's such a piece of work' - miriel's resistance to change and her pride so that she refuses to admit that she errored and change her mind. Also as a Sindar fan, the line in HoME about miriel having silver hair felt like cheap two tree/silver and gold medal symbolism that contradicted the silver hair was a sign of the Sindarin royalty and something that Feanorian fans ran with so that their favs had yet another thing to claim as theirs and ignore the much larger cast of characters in Arda. So, miriel in the cuivienen era fics weren't doing it for me (well, most of that sub-set weren't) and neither was the miriel/indis fics (mostly the same thing), though i was trying to like them. Therefore Nerdanel/Indis was like a supernova revelation to me - aha, this is the f/f indis ship i wanted all along. and miriel was the put on a pedestal character that, like the mother from the fairy tale Donkeyskin, had lines but were unheeded. Her life as Firiel was more interesting for me, but there too the fandom focus was mostly on her looking over the deeds of her son and grandsons and i didn't want to waste more narrative focal energy on them. Then as i'm lamenting that daeron's woodworking skills and that he built lúthien's loom for her ... oh wait, daeron builds miriel a loom. two master-craftsmen with flawed personalities and reasons to be predisposed to not get along but also predisposed to have shared interests and do get along ... new ship! once more the focus on miriel's true love- her craft. But wait, Daeron/Durin the Deathless is the superior Daeron rarepair crackship. No wait, polyamory. Durin/Daeron/Miriel is galaxy brain.
also the BEST AU EVAR where miriel figures out that she had no interest in being queen of the Noldor early and rejects Finwe. Where Miriel’s resistance to change and pride then makes her a fun foil to nerdanel as bitter art rivals and thus the Noldor element of that au is 90% the rivalry of those two with finwe just as petty as in canon egging it on.
