god dean's reaction to meeting gay people will never fail to amaze me. he's so surprised but also genuinely curious and you just get the feeling that he hasn't had the chance to be around queer people much in his life which makes me so sad but also so happy for future dean who will surround himself with queer friends and family.
i just watched 5x09 the real ghostbusters and the scenes with dean at the end just really got to me. like here he is when he finds out the guys they've been working with are a couple:
and then the next time we see him in this episode he's leaning against the impala with the absolute cutest smile. like.... seeing someone, dressed as him, be openly gay made him smile like this!
and finally sam shows up and asks if he's okay and there isn't really a whole lot to explain his answer except that he just found out that the guys who helped them on the hunt, guys who idolize the characters sam and dean, are gay and in love.
i just think everything about this is really so cute
in the good spn that lives in my head Dean started wearing a bobby-pin hidden in his hair when he had it long at 22 and then continued to try and hide it in the longer section of his hair when John made him cut it short again. Dean uses it regularly to get out of cuffs but it only comes up in like S9 when Sam is like “why do you have a bobby-pin in your hair???” And Dean is like “your hair looks like THAT and you still don’t manage to carry anything useful in it???????”
This is ofc used as queer coding and Dean makes jokes about it being gay to wear bobby pins but ok when he does it cause it’s smart (it is in fact gay when he does it but it’s because he’s gay anyway)
okay word garbage vomit post bc I’m watching a movie rn but something something tfw2.0 as an inherently queer coded family dynamic via having three dads who are all (in their own way) nurturing one of whom literally cooks and bakes and wears an apron and is submissive and wore pink panties once and was already basically a mother figure to his brother. Fathers/men being nurturing and taking on traditionally motherly/feminine traits in a family something something almost every babyjack au thing I’ve seen retroactively perpetuates traditional nuclear family roles via takes like “sam is the mom of the group,” cas so frequently being equated with other women or portrayed as effeminate vs dean being a masculine macho meat man. Jack being canonically non-binary masc-presenting but always portrayed as gnc or exclusively feminine.. all of tfw2.0 being traditionally masculine expressing boy guys and gay men but constantly ascribed to femininity in some way of another bc nobody really understands masculinity as a queer concept and uhhhhh I’m um. does this make sense im not really trying to make it coherent
i would add this onto the original post if i didnt think i’d get attacked for being a #wincestie but i think this means we also need to consider the possibility that sam and dean’s relationship is and always was queercoded
If only the people on SPN Reddit had the reading comprehension skills to put this one together. Having a porn mag that you “like” so much that you regularly discuss it with your brother but some how never ever pursuing an Asian woman in any capacity, amongst other things, screams performative heterosexuality. The only time we see Dean actually implied to be with an Asian woman is in Changing Channels where he is playing a caricature of himself in the sitcom land. And he flirts with the waitress in Stuck in the Middle (With You) specifically to try and get her with Cas, and is almost entirely focused on Cas for that interaction anyway. Like I always see queer people talk about hearing their friends talk about crushes and not get it, so they just pick someone and call them their crush. Dean saw a BAB mag one time and was like “this’ll do” and then never dropped it.
I personally don’t think that Dean doesn’t like women at all, I think he’s bi, but boy oh boy the whole Asian fetish porn mag thing is so comp het to me
