We Don't Gatekeep Art Resources | A Comprehensive List
Here's a list of some of the tools/sites I currently use or have used previously for works/studies. I'll separate it into Software/Utility, Reference, and 'Other' which will be just general things that could help you map out things for your experience with art. **[Free highlighted in pink, paid highlighted in green. Blue is variable/both. Prices Listed in USD]**
Software/Utility:
2D
Krita Painting app (PC) (my main digital art software on PC for 5+ yrs)
Clip Studio Paint [PC] [CSP 2.0+ allows for 3d modelling within the painting app and a lot of other cool features] [apparently allows up to 6 months free trial]
Procreate (12.99) [iPad/iPad Pro] (the GOAT)
Artstudio Pro [iPad/iPad Pro] (An alternative to Procreate if you enjoy the more traditional art app layout) -- I find this app handy when Procreate is lacking a feature I need, or vice versa. (you can easily transfer files between the two, but keep in mind Procreate's layer limit)
2D "Collaborative Painting/Drawing apps"
Magma Studio
Drawpile
Discord Whiteboard
Gartic Phone (Pretty decent for 2d animation practice, but has a hard limit on frames)
3D
Blender [3D Modelling, Sculpting + Layout] (PC)
Sculptris [PC] (it's an old unsupported version of Zbrush, but can help to get ideas out, and functions better than browser sculpting apps
Nomad Sculpt [iPad/iPad Pro] ($20) Works pretty well if you prefer a mobile setup, but it is a bit intense on the battery life and takes some getting used to
References + Study
Magic Poser [ PC and Mobile ] Has both free and paid versions, I've made do with just the lite version before
Artpose ($9.99) [Iphone + Steam]
Head Model Studio [IPhone] A 3D head, with both a basic blockout version for angles, and a paid version with more detail
Cubebrush [simply search "[keyword] pose reference pack"], they usually have good results + they frequently have sales!
Line of Action [Good for Gesture practice + daily sketching], also has other resources built in.
Quickposes Similar to Line of action, more geared toward anatomy
Drawabox | Perspective Fundamentals Improvement modules (Suggested by @taffingspy )
Sketchfab, this skull in particular is useful, but there is other models that can help you study anatomy as well.
Pinterest can be good, you just have to be careful, usually you're better off just finding reference pack if you have the money, sometimes certain creators have freebies as well
Artstation Marketplace can be decent [make sure to turn on the Aye-Eye filter so it doesn't feed you trash], a colleague of mine recommended this head model for practicing facial blocking, there is also this free version without lighting.
Local Art Museums [Unironically good for studying old "master work" if you're into that, or even just getting some inspiration]
Brushes + Other Useful software:
I personally have used both of these brush packs before making my own
(I actually don't know how to share my daily brush set because I frequently switch between Krita, Procreate, and ASP, but once I figure that out I'll be sure to do that lol)
Marc Brunet's Starter brush pack [Technically free but supporting him for this if you like it is ideal, there's some good brushes]
Dave Greco Brush Pack [$3]
Gumroad in general is a good place to find brushes and art resources. *Note; for Krita specifically, brush packs are a bit weird, so it may require you to find different packs, or import them in a particular way
PureRef [PC] - Reference Compiler/Moodboarding
VizRef ($3.99) [iPad] - Moodboarding/Reference Compiler
Artist Youtubers/Creators that helped me improve/guide me along as a self-taught artist from when I first started digital art to where I am today:
Proko
Marco Bucci
Sinix Design
Sycra
Hardy Fowler
Lighting Mentor
Winged Canvas
Moderndayjames
Swatches
Chommang_drawing
Marc Brunet (YTartschool)
+ Observing a lot of speedpaint art by people whose work I enjoy on social media/youtube, trying to dissect their processes
If you've gotten this far, first of all, congrats, you can read a lot, and second of all, thank you for reading and I hope this helps! I'll continue to come back and update this if I find any new resources in the future, or if my processes change :)
Much Love,
-Remidiy

with the new influx of ai art, I've really wanted to 'pick up the pencil' and learn how to draw!! your art is absolutely gorgeous and detailed and was a motivator to actually try. tysm for everything that you make, its genuinely so pretty and makes me smile every time I see it on my feed. (if you're willing to share) how did you begin making art? do you have any tips or resources for those wanting to start?
Brooo this ask genuinely murdered mee <33333 ur soo so sweet anon thank u so much 😭😭 DO ITTT yes pick up the pencil u got this!!!!! ✏️
Tbhh i started because i wanted to draw my fav character hehee just got a notebook and drew the guy for thousands of times like pagesss and pages of just his face. If you have something that excites you and gives you motivation to draw then i’d say just go with that!! :)) DRAW WHATEVERR absolutely anything that gives u serotonin i think thats the best way to start
If you want to learn anatomy i’d suggest life drawing for sure, but if you cant, just using sites like quickposes or line of action would help so much!! Or some youtubers like proko or sinix design can help! You can find others for sure these are just what i’ve watched before
Just learning the structure behind anything you wanna draw would make it look more correct and better 🙂↕️ cant think of anything else really but feel free to ask or message abt anything <3

Question abt drawing: been trying to attempt learning how to draw forever but I always have trouble getting over the obstacle of having to learn/study things like anatomy and shading, which then causes me to stop drawing and have a harder time picking it back up. I know it's important for improving your art and yourself as an artist but I can't help but see it as tedious and overwhelming, especially the anatomy since it's more on the science side of things and science is not my thing lol. Do you have any advice on how to get over it or work thru it?
i think there's a couple facets to this question. firstly i'd recommend you consider what exactly your end goal is in learning how to draw: do you specifically want to be able to produce anatomically accurate figures and true-to-life shading, or do you just want to be able to make something for fun that looks good to you? one of the most helpful things I ever learned at art school was that accuracy doesn't matter if it looks good. 99% of my art isn't strictly anatomically accurate, and part of that is stylization, but even when i'm doing realistic figure drawings i like to lengthen limbs and exaggerate curves in order to make my drawings look better. So if your only real goal with art is to make something that looks good and enjoy the process, my first piece of advice would be to stop worrying so much about stuff like perfect accuracy! if you use references and keep pushing yourself, the skill and understanding you're looking for will come naturally with time. before I was ever classically trained, I got pretty far just by drawing my favorite characters in different poses and situations over and over again, and that experience laid the groundwork for when classical training did become available to me. Just because you're not necessarily doing serious figure studies doesn't mean you're not getting valuable practice--what it means is that you're having FUN while you're practicing, and having fun with your art is the most important thing!!!
Secondly, you mentioned anatomy being on the science side of things, which suggests to me that you may be looking in the wrong places when trying to do more serious anatomical study. if you look up 'anatomy' or anything similar on a web search engine, you're likely going to get a lot of very complex scientific illustrations. and while those aren't necessarily devoid of artistic value (I took a class all about scientific anatomy for artists last semester and it was GREAT) for a beginner who's just trying to learn how to make a body look like a body, they're not what you're looking for. what is going to be much more helpful for you are sites like line of action or quickposes. these sites are basically repositories of figure drawing images, and you can set them to automatically switch to a new image after a certain interval of time. if you really, desperately want to improve your anatomy specifically, what I recommend is going to one of these sites, setting it to the shortest interval possible, and trying to copy the pose as closely as you can before time is up. this might sound crazy, since the shortest interval is usually somewhere between 30-60 seconds, which obviously isn't enough to get much down. but what this will do is force you to look at how these models' bodies are constructed and translate it onto the page quickly and without overthinking it. be warned, your first maybe hundred of these are going to look like shit. but if you do this enough, you're eventually going to gain an intrinsic sense for 1. how a body works and 2. the easiest way for you personally to construct a body when drawing it. even without knowing the scientific names and anatomical rules, you're going to get a FEEL for how things work, which is much more important and useful to you as a character artist.
Finally, i think the most important thing to remember is that no art is bad art, even if you're not satisfied with the end product. when you're first starting out as an artist, you're going to make things that don't look right and you're going to be frustrated with yourself because of it. i vividly remember crying over a sketchbook at maybe age 11 or 12 because I was so upset i couldn't put exactly what was in my head on the page. Skill comes with time and practice and that is a frustrating fact of life, but no time spent doing something you enjoy and are passionate about is wasted. It might look bad now but you are laying the groundwork for your future success, and someday you're probably going to look back on your past work and say "I can't believe I thought this looked bad back then. for my age and my skill level i was doing AMAZING." And as previously mentioned, it's a lot less discouraging when something looks bad if you had fun making it, so try to have FUN with your art. draw things you enjoy and are passionate about and don't worry if it looks bad. focus on the experience, the skill will come in time. you've got this!!
#i've had this account since i was 15 years old. you can literally go back and see my ass did NOT know what i was doing#but i was having fun and the weird stuff that i was trying that maybe didn't always look right was what laid the groundwork#for my current skills!#i know this advice is basically just 'practice' which is what everyone says but it's important to me that you know#that practice should be FUN too. practice isn't drawing boring shit over and over again before you get to draw the fun stuff#practice is drawing the fun stuff that is maybe a little out of your comfort zone and maybe it looks a little wonky but you did it#and you had fun doing it! and now you'll be a little more prepared to do it again in the future!#asks

What are some good resources you used for learning how to draw
YouTube videos, there are a lot of art channels dedicated to teaching art but the ones that helped me the most were Ethan Becker, Proko and Sinix, really good stuff, highly recommend.
reference sites, there are a lot of those too but the only ones I know are QuickPoses and Line Of Action, QuickPoses is great for practicing gesture, you can set a timer and sketch a bunch of stuff in succession, and Line Of Action is a good art archive.
And other people's art, you can learn so much just by looking at other artists work.

hiii I'm an anon who's a beginner artist and i would love your explanations to drawig gabriel :3c
Ok so.. I do want to help but I'm not sure how much specific advice I can offer bc I don't really have like a consistent Process? Been debating how to answer this because I don't really know how I draw him I kinda just do my best until something works
Gabriel in my brain while I'm drawing him is like 90% just A Guy. And I can't really give much advice on how to draw A Guy apart from use references (I like Adorkastock quite a bit; figure drawing sites like Quickposes and Line Of Action help a lot with practicing proportions/anatomy and getting more fluid and dynamic poses; and there's an app called MagicPoser I use on my iPad if I want to do something like more dramatic perspective and want to make sure I have everything in roughly the right place; etc)
...And for the remaining 10% that isn't just A Guy (helmet, breastplate, wings)- I'm ngl the answer is still 'when in doubt, use references' though with the caveat that 'if drawing him slightly inaccurately looks cooler then do that'. I've drawn him enough that I can usually get him down from memory at this point, but staring at his stupid little model for a few hours is the only way to get there. I don't know shit about fuck about how to get 3d models out of the game, but if you spawn Gabe in sandbox and turn on 'enemies ignore player' you can get a screenshot of him from whatever angle you need. Ngl the body pillow is the most detailed reference for his armor we have, so like half the drawings I've done of him I've probably also had that open off to the side lol. For his wings I generally use the same shapes I do for bird wings, and when I'm not feeling lazy I sneak a peek at photos of real plate armor
the only drawing of gabe i’ve got the process recorded for is an unfinished sketch, i’m not sure how helpful that’ll be but I guess it can’t hurt

The anatomy and design of your characters make some wonderfully cartoony, but also cute and sexy folks. What inspires your character's designs? Any artists or methods of study in particular?
I followed a lot of advice like 15 years ago that whatever artists I could find would put out. I don't doubt it's all still relevant today - you can find books like Andrew Loomis' Figure Drawing for All It's Worth as a pdf on google quite easily.
I'm big on figure drawing, sites like quickposes are my go-to when I need to shake off some rust. ideally it's best to find real life models if you can - if you look around you might even be able to do it for free! here's one I went to recently - I like seeing how different people draw the same pose!

and of course cartoons & comics are a big influence on me. I got into furry purely because of disney's robin hood, I'm pretty sure, and I followed folks like pen ward and steve wolfhard on livejournal and loved their straightforward cartooning style just using simple shapes to say what they wanted to say
also starfox for the snes which isn't a cartoon but the low poly models and toony pixel portraits definitely also showed me you can create a lot out of simple shapes

Doing anatomy studies (is that what they are called??) like you said.. its really helpful and more fun than I thought it would be, I'm kinda just redrawing poses but its turning out pretty good! :) so thank youuu, I knew doing stuff like that was something i needed to do but someone directly telling me was the push I needed
Yay :D I’m really glad my suggestion helped! I find them really fun so I’m glad you do too ^^ and yeah sometimes you just need someone to give you the extra push for you to actually sit down and start ^^;
I’ve moved more towards using scans of Japanese pose books because the poses tend to be more aplical to my art and its so nice and helpful to be able to see the poses at multiple angles -

but when I started doing anatomy studies I used this site call quick pose to get reference images.

#thank youuu for the ask this made my day to get ^^#sorry for taking so long to respond tho ^^;#asks

I follow you on twitter & all I gotta say is, I love the diversity in your drawings so much, I hate when people make girls all stereotypes & your art makes me feel so comfortable it’s like a warm feeling not to mention your nsfw art. It doesn’t just show the list it shows the love & affection each character has for eachother it shows how intimate & hot the moment can be but also sweet? I’m not sure I love your art too much it really makes my day to see it, but any tips on anatomy?♥️
thank you so much!! i totally get what you mean by a list, that really is what diversity can feel like sometimes. my weight and figure have fluctuated so much over the years and i've gotten enough shit from family about eating habits and how chubby i've gotten, to the point of dysmorphia, and turning to art (and not to mention seeing the vast majority of fat butch rep) to remedy it has done wonders for my body image, and i'm really glad people like how i do things.
in terms of tips, as someone who went to school for this sorta thing, i'm gonna try to make this as accessible as possible aka free resources.
timed figure drawing!
legit, you gotta draw naked people posed in intricate ways. there's literally no avoiding it, you have to draw from life and not from tutorials. obv, i'm not saying go out and attend a life drawing course -- that's expensive shit -- so here's a few options:
i use a site called quickposes, since most figure drawing galleries require subscriptions.
you can set a timer for how long you want on each pose/reference. i recommend challenging yourself with shorter times as it helps you to get rid of any hang-ups about getting the anatomy exactly right. the drawing's got to get done by the end of the timer, don't focus on the details. just draw, be done with it, move on to the next drawing.
there's also a youtube channel that we'd use in class when a model couldn't show called new masters academy and they have a bunch of timed daily drawing exercises.
as a general rule, don't lean on the amount of time you have. what you're wanting to do is get a FULL PICTURE on your paper as soon as possible, regardless of a long or short time. get the full figure onto the paper then use the rest of the time to fuss over details, shading, editing, etc.
do studies!
kinda similar to the last one but in the more time-consuming sense.
use pinterest. it has a lot of uses for a lot of things but i use it quite a bit for both anatomy refs and costume design inspiration. this is legit what my home page looks like now because of it.
here's a board i made on anatomy, pulling from different body types; obviously i get a little gay wid it, but there's a verrrryyyy clear lack of certain body types in a lot of body refs like muscular women, fat women, just overall people who higher fat content than the lean, almost 0% fat of the figures seen in most tutorials and galleries:
this is where pinterest really shines because you can find literally everything on it.
in particular, there's an account called character design references, that is basically a stockpile of references for artists. i wouldn't normally recommend artist tutorials when it comes to wanting to learn anatomy because it can get a little echo-chambery (side-eyes the male vs. female tutorials that float around on twitter all the time) but there are actually some boards that have genuine studies on the human form, even from a medical point of view.
LITERALLY JUST DRAW A LOT.
I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH IT'S GONNA TAKE A LOT OF TIME AND PRACTICE TO GET TO A CERTAIN LEVEL OF SATISFACTION.
like that's it, full stop, draw often. if you're feeling rusty, go back to basics. if you're art blocked, go back to basics. if you're bored, go back to basics.
#ask#anatomy#anatomy tips#talkies#drawing should be about having fun first and foremost#i find figure drawing fun because of how quickly it gets done#art advice

sorry if you've been asked this before but i love your art and i was wondering how you learned to draw? like did you do studies or did you just wing it? thanks for answering
aw thank you! im self taught, so i do studies and draw almost every day (: i use a lot of resources online to practice.
info/resources under the cut
good yt channels with info: finch | sinix | sycra | proko | love life drawing <- i watch these a lot for tutorials but mostly just watching someone draw makes me wanna draw
other stuff:
fresh eyes - this is a free course that teaches you how to draw people. really good for beginners. they have a paid forum i’ve been apart of for years too that has a lot of exercises that do a good job of breaking different parts of anatomy down into easy ways to learn
quickpose - i do 10 of these at 45 seconds each for gesture practice, helps to get confident in drawing people and its a good way to warm up before drawing
sketchfab - 3d model site, if you search anything you can find a model and rotate it around to get different angles for reference
for more specific references i’ll just go on google images and search ‘arm reference’ or ‘foot reference’ and there’s plenty of images there
i tend to need a bit of structure or ill end up doing nothing, so i usually break my drawing sessions into two parts, that being reference studies and imagination drawings. so i’ll do some gesture drawing off quickpose, or maybe draw some arms from reference. then when my hand feels warmed up enough ill do some quick imagination drawings, and then finally i’ll do whatever big project i had in mind (if i had any at all, if not i just draw whatever til i get bored for the day)
i also do studies of artists work that i like. i keep a folder of all the art that i want my style to be like, and i go through them to see what traits that includes. im into more western comic book art styles, so i do copies from comic books to practice too.
but basically, as long as you draw consistently you’ll get better, so i draw almost every day even if it’s stupid doodles LOL
here’s some of my studies/sketches as examples:
the 45 second gesture drawings i mentioned (ive done 100s of these LOL)
reference studies based on photos
imagination drawing where i just scribble random stuff just for the sake of drawing
i’d been planning on uploading my studies to a separate blog someday actually cause i’m gonna run outta space on my ipad eventually LOL
anyways, thanks for the ask! so happy you like my art (: im working really hard to get good but i’ve still got a long ways to go

I really really love your art! I first discovered your art when I was browsing AFTG fanart, and I'm really glad I did! You are one of my fave artists, and I really admire the way you do anatomy and color.
I'd also like to ask: Are there any tutorials you would recommend for art? And also, do you sell any art books or the like?
Thank you so much, and I hope you have a wonderful day!!! 💜💜💜
Hello and thank you so much!!
I don't follow any specific tutorials when drawing, but I love the color and painting advice artist Devin Korwin shares on his social media accounts! For anatomy I'm doing lots of gesture and life drawing (on sites like line of action or quickposes, which are free to use).
And I don't sell any of my art or merch, I just don't have the time and I don't think I would make enough to cover the costs, sorry for that. 🙏

Trying to get less stuck in my head about my drawing. Used a site to do quick pose practice and figured others might like to know about it.
Quickposes: free image library and gesture drawing tool for artists
I'm going to try and do at least one session a day and catalogue my progress.

So I have a God AU that's been in my goofy brain for a long while
And I'm getting back into making my silly art and moodboards ejejejej so here's multifandom god au pieces
So Quackity is the god of Chaos. In the AU they have Guardians, and Jinx is the Guardian for Chaos who goes by...Jinx. I kept it because why not. [More ramblings below]
I used a base for Jinx I made off Posemy.Art and I used two reference images from Quickposes for the double picture of them. Now I'm not sure why I decided to make Quackity Chaos, especially because I'm still kinda on the fence of Dream being in it, and I've changed what his domain is, but Quackity is staying Chaos no matter what. I'll add more to this au in future, I really want to expand on it at AO3.
Also I'm thinking of making an instagram, but 1, I don't think it will do well since I'm not very consistent, 2 I enjoy having tumblr mainly for art, and 3 I don't want certain people I know IRL to find it owo
Plus ao3 is my main like social site, cause I enjoy writing, and I enjoy art but I'm not consistent at uploading and it's more of a hobby for me, so i feel like Instagram just wouldn't be something I focus on. I'll think about it.
#quackity#jinx arcane#moodboard#edit#god au#multifandom#damn most of recommended tags are food fantasy related lmaooooo#also im back after being silly after ao3 went down

AdorkaStock Generator and their Deviantart page are my go-tos for poses
Exotic Animal Photos Repository (what it says on the tin; exotic animals references)
Magic Poser is a simple posing tool, though nowadays I prefer
PoseMy.Art has a lot of presets you can adjust, I use it a lot, I'd buy the paid version if I could
POSEMANIACS has 3d models that show under the skin (muscles), I love it so much :]
Reference Angle if you just need help on posing for a head/bust specifically
QuickPoses generates poses specifically for gesture drawing (they also have nude models)
SketchDaily is similar to the above pose gens (also has nudity)
I've used Colour Pod palettes before
PhotoPea is an in-browser photo editor that (from what I've heard) rivals photoshop. I made this in there:
I like using SketchFab for references sometimes. It's a 3d model site but you can free move the camera, I used this one for a wagon :D
hot artists don't gatekeep
I've been resource gathering for YEARS so now I am going to share my dragons hoard
Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.
Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.
Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.
Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.
SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.
SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.
Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.
Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.
Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.
Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.
