or are both individually excellent cooks but should not be put together (which I feel like honestly counts for almost everything they do together, it’s like their rational working braincells turn off when they are together and only turn on again when they’re apart)

When I started shipping them:

five years ago they were the only pairing i felt confident about writing about, all my fluff/easy and go-to fics were for them, i did all my requests for them.. they are my everything <3 the reason i got into fic writing!!

My thoughts:

they are still my guys forever!! things have gotten.. complicated now that my view on racetrack has tbh become more nuanced and three dimensional, but they are the epitome of friends to lovers. there's a beautiful simplicity to how naturally they fall in love, in my mind. of course they're in love. thats what it is. ugh.

What makes me happy about them:

how their relationship subtly falls into romantic love from solely friendship. al starts leaning into race's touches, race is smiling whenever albert laughs, the two of them finding their new normal and level of comfortability with each other. it's more jarring for al than it is race, since al isn't good with change, but they both sense it, and race is perfectly slow and easy with it all. godddddd they just KNOW EACH OTHER so well

What makes me sad about them:

ONE SIDED RALBERT TURN IT UPPPP!! albert falling into a feeling that isnt there as he realizes the king of brooklyn has swept race off his feet and away from al. ough. and the refusal of al to hold a grudge because, well, at least race is happy. EVERY time its good. it's always good and so sad

Things done in fanfic that annoys me:

fandom-wide they're viewed as the "dumbasses in love" i feel like and while yes so true... they aren't actually idiots. they aren't always pulling pranks and being cartoonish yk i feel like that's so watered down

Things I look for in fanfic:

well tbh now i rly like them when they aren't the main ship because they're also like.... such a good couple when written from another person's pov??? because then the narrator also can see just how compatible race and albert work together, and we don't even have to hear either race's or albert's inner thoughts to see them be in sync. it's just nice :)

My wishlist:

my wish is that jacob fisher and josh barnett will read my mind by this saturday and give me a uksies ralbert!! because it is genuinely!! not there. which is of course fine, it's whoever's friends with who, but like....damn. i miss them in king of new york.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:

i am fine with sprace. like i am. i think they're a fun squabbling side ship. and i REALLY do love redfinch, honestly, they are very gentle to me. <3

Racetrack Headcanons

He and Albert are 100% best friends (sorry, don't ship Ralbert) and share a single braincell

Medda is his mom too, can't tell me otherwise.

He and Jack have the sweetest sibling relationship known to man and even though they are not blood related, they are truely each-other's chosen family

He is obsessed with Spot. And it is a mutual thing. They are the totally and unequivocally in love with one another. The only reason he didn't go to Brooklyn when Jack was asking the newsies as a whole is because he didn't wanna out their relationship before Spot was ready

If he likes you, he will infodump. It could be about anything but he will do it.

He bites. He will bite you. If he likes you that is. The thought process being, person sweet, sweet = yum, bite if sweet, bite person

Albert and Race cause constant chaos and no one can tell me otherwise

Worries that those in his life (especially Spot, Medda and Jack) aren't proud of him and find him a burden when really he's not

Totally addicted to caffeine and nicotine. Coffee and cigars/cigarettes (or vapes if it was this century) are life

Sexuality Headcanon: She’s canonically straight and asexual, but I headcanon her to be demiromantic as well

Gender Headcanon: Cis girl

A ship I have with said character: SPROLDEN. Sprolden is my favorite thing.

A BROTP I have with said character: I don’t know, she doesn’t really have many friends besides Michael. But I like the idea of Isaac and Tori bonding over being asexual (and I’m lowkey hoping this happens in Season 3). Also I like the idea of Tori and Nick swapping funny stories about Charlie.

A NOTP I have with said character: Her and David Nelson. Believe it or not, people actually ship this.

A random headcanon: I have two. One: She’s autistic. And two: After dancing to There Is A Light That Never Goes Out with Michael, she starts listening to more of The Smiths’ music, and finds that she actually really likes it.

General Opinion over said character: Words cannot describe how much I love her.

A ship I have with said character: MISCHA AND TALIA. I love them, I want what they have, except not long distance.

A BROTP I have with said character: MISCHA AND RICKY. In my head they are best friends and the most iconic duo in the choir. They’re my favorites.

A NOTP I have with said character: Mischa and Ocean. I don’t really understand this ship considering the way she treats him in canon.

A random headcanon: For some reason, people assume he’s a bad driver. He’s not, but he has an ungodly amount of road rage.

General Opinion over said character: I love him so much. Also if it weren’t for Jane Doe, I would want him to be the one to go back (not that it matters because my headcanon is they all go back and get a second chance 😌)

And finally, Race!

Sexuality Headcanon: Bisexual

Gender Headcanon: Trans guy (semi-canon? Kenny Ortega confirmed it like three years ago but idk if it counts as canon because death of the author exists. BUT IT’S CANON TO ME.)

A ship I have with said character: Sprace. I love Sprace.

A BROTP I have with said character: Race and Crutchie. I don’t know why I love them so much, but I do. Also, I watched a production of the show where Race and Katherine were besties, and honestly I love that so much. Also Ralbert, obviously.

A NOTP I have with said character: Race x a Delancey brother. But that goes for any Newsie.

A random headcanon: He has ADHD.

General Opinion over said character: He’s one of my favorites. He’s so fun and I love him.

Say if I’d ever be able to make my own production of Newsies, how’d you guys feel about a female Racetrack Higgins?

It ‘s not just because I kin him so bad (haha), but also thought of this the moment when i heard about the west end brooklyn newsies being girls.

Racetrack originally is from brooklyn. Not only would it give that subtle himt, I already have a backstory.

But I don’t want to share it jnless you guys think the concept would actually work.

I’m really nervous about sharkng this one but I just love the whole backstory I have written for female race (with of course a little help of other headcanons) and I just want to know if people would give the concept a chance.

I know it might sound a bit basic since I know there have been some high school productions where race is played by a girl, but i mean race actually bekng a girl

Headcanon that Albert just gets randomly emotional at night.

Race wakes up at like, 3am to the sounds of sniffling and turns over to see Albert crying his eyes out and Race, while extremely confused because why on earth is he crying at 3am, tries to comfort him and figure out what the fuck is happening.

Race: Al? What's going man, why're ya crying?

Albert, currently sobbing: The worker bees- They only live for th- for thirty days, which means that they- they spend their whole lives working for something they're probably never gonna even gonna see-

Race: Yup, and that's sad, but we're not worker bees buddy, and we have school in exactly four hours, so let's sleep this out, ey?

i feel like people know how traumatized the newsies are, but they don’t really understand how much it would affect them.

especially with all things fanon omg

crutchie had to deal with the loss of his parents, as well as the loss of the functionality of his leg. he’s the bright and sunny “cheer others up and put on a smile” type of person, and that can be so hard.

jack’s parents were out of the picture, and he had to work to survive. he goes to the newsies and then is thrown into being leader, and the strike. he gets beaten and has to watch his best friend and brother be taken away, not knowing he would survive it.

race’s parents died. his dad was abusive and he loved his mom so much it was so painful to lose her. he was living on the street. he had to be a newsie to get any type of money. he had to work his way up from the very bottom. he’s the “joke about my problems” type, and, like crutchie, would be bottling everything up and he just would not let it out.

albert had so much going on. his mom died, his brother died, his dad and his two older brothers are abusive, he was sent to the refuge, his childhood best friends caused him to lose his hearing from beating him so hard, he was on the streets before being a newsie, he had to switch from brooklyn to manhattan because someone who was emotionally abusing him betrayed him (my hc), he had awful anger issues and gets in fights nearly every day.

sure, the newsies are characters. but they’re kids. they’re so young and they’ve gone through such awful things that they just had to deal with. and this was just the “core four”.

so i'm pretty sure we all know how proud albert is of his hair. that being said he really likes it when his partner (whether it be finch, race, elmer, spot, WHOEVER it is in your own little newsiesverse) plays with it or runs their fingers through it. plus, he's very protective and values it way more than he should so he only lets people he really trusts touch it at all, so being able to do something like this is kinda an achievement

okay i feel like they either have the longest slow burn ever or get married 6 months after they meet. no in-between

for this set of headcanons tho im gonna go with slow burn !! so imagine this modern au, known each other since they were at least in middle school, but probably before that

bc the thing about ralbert is: they're best friends no matter what. they're the kind of couple to be elementary school sweethearts. they've spent SO LONG learning each other and falling for each other

that's why one of my favorite tropes with them is just. you know how sometimes you can look at a person and think "i love you," and it's not some big revelation? it's not some shocking moment that creeps up on you? it's not scary because it's always been there? that's ralbert.

"i love you" isn't a declaration, it's a reassurance.

bc they're the kind of couple to just,, idk theyre so casual with each other as friends and falling in love was just the next step, really.

racer, though, is the more affectionate of the two- at least when other people are around. he'll play with albert's hair, hold his hand, rub his shoulders, sit in his lap; he's naturally the cuddle-bug of the relationship

albert on the other hand isn't huge on public displays of affection, but he doesn't mind it if race is the one initiating. occasionally he'll kiss race's cheek or hold his hand

not to say he's not romantic though! when they're alone, he's clingy as fuck. like "let me put my head on your lap while you watch a movie so i can stare at your face and compliment you for an hour and a half" clingy. while race is cooking, al is the kind of guy to come up behind him, hug him around the waist, and put his chin on his shoulder just to be close to him.

albert is a sucker for quality time and words of affirmation; race is a sucker for physical touch and gift-giving. they work out great!

they're both geniuses alone but kind of cancel out when they're together so they're just that really dumb happy-go-lucky couple

they're so in sync its CRAZY. they can have full convos with just facial expressions

they aren't perfect though. when they fight, it can get nasty- but they always seem to know when they need to cool down alone and come back together to talk it out.

and sometimes they clash, but they're both very vocal about their needs- honest communication is a must.

all in all, they're a very happy couple !!
