Bucky was going to kill him. Steve had promised an easy in-and-out mission, something low stakes to get back into the groove after some time off in Wakanda. This was everything but that. Bucky was snapped out of his murderous thoughts by a bullet whizzing by his head, making him curse as he sped up. These HYDRA soldiers were hot on his tail, and not letting up. It didn’t help that he had been hit, the pain coursing through his right thigh a constant reminder of the bullet lodged in the flesh. As he tumbled through the treeline into a clearing, he saw an old barn, the moonlight reflecting off the tin roof seemed like a beacon of hope. Without any other options, he skillfully hopped over the fence, ducked into the barn, held his breath, and listened. The soldiers came exploding through the treeline and stopped, seeing no sign of Bucky anywhere. Bucky listened carefully as he heard them approach the barn and stop. Their boots crunched on the fallen leaves as they circled the barn. His heart was in his throat, blood rushing in his ears but after a moment that seemed like forever, they left. Bucky didn’t move for almost an hour, listening and making sure that he was in the clear before he pulled out his transponder. He looked down to activate it and saw that it had been trashed by a stray bullet. He groaned out a curse and threw the useless device across the barn. He tried to stand but the pain in his leg prevented him from supporting any weight so he pushed himself up against the wall, deciding that he’d just rest for a bit.
He was on the verge of sleep when a song started to flow through his mind, louder than it had been since, ever, causing him to startle. See, everyone had a soulmate, something Bucky never believed in, having never heard any music in the 40’s. After he fell off the train, he figured whoever they were would be long dead by now. However, since coming out of recovery, he started to hear the music again. Part of HYDRA’s programming, he found out, was to block the music that would be pumping into his mind from his soulmate but now that he was free from all of the things that HYDRA put in his head, he started hearing music. He didn’t think much of it, as it was always quiet and in the background like a thought, but this song was so loud that it sounded like it was being whispered in his ear.
“Let's get out, we can leave this city. Let's drive to the open air. Yeah, the countryside is so pretty. With the wind blowing in your hair. We can look back someday Baby, don't you understand? That we only get one love, I wanna make it count. Honey, come on now and take my hand”
It was a soft melody, the gentle guitar soothing his frayed nerves, and just as quickly as it startled him awake, it soothed him back to sleep.
Tumblr media
He was woken up by something cold and wet nuzzling into his cheek. Bucky groaned and tried to shift away from the intrusion but he was too stiff from his awkward sleeping predicament to move very fast. Swatting at whatever the hell was messing with him, he was greeted by more music flooding his senses. This time, even louder than the last. The guitar was vibrating his bones and the drums rattling his teeth when all of a sudden there was a gasp and the music promptly stopped.
“Jake! Get away from him! Jesus, hey guy, are you ok?”
A panicked voice called out as the presence next to him disappeared. Bucky shot open his eyes and shot up into a position ready to defend himself when he saw a woman staring at him. Her light blue button-up was tucked into a pair of old worn-out jeans with a dark belt securing them in place around her hips. A large black and white dog was standing at her side, tail wagging furiously back and forth as its warm brown eyes stared at him.
Bucky blinked, all the memories of what happened yesterday came flooding back into the forefront of his brain.
“Uh- yeah, I uh- I think so.” He groaned, his leg screaming at him in pain causing him to hiss out in discomfort.
“Are you sure? You don’t seem like it, here, let me help you.” The woman walked over, tucking an arm underneath his and wrapping it around him, hoisting him onto his feet and leading him to a bench on the other side of the barn. She gently placed him down and ran her eyes over him when she noticed the dried patch of blood on his thigh.
“Shit, have you been shot?!” Bucky was too busy gawking at how stunning this woman was to notice that he was bleeding again, her words caused him to look down where she was staring.
“Oh. Yeah, I guess I was. I kind of forgot about that.” Bucky shrugged as he watched the woman wander off to another area.
“How in the hell do you just forget that you were shot?!” She called out in between the slams of cabinet doors. Bucky took a deep breath, opening his mouth to respond when he noticed the dog, who he presumed to be the ‘Jake’ the woman had called out to, resting his head on Bucky’s non-injured thigh. He ran his fingers through the soft silky fur of the pup’s head, looking back up when he heard the woman's rapidly returning footsteps. She appeared from around an old tractor, med kit in tow. She saw the dog vibrating happily underneath Bucky’s attention and smiled softly.
“Jake! Leave…” She paused looking at Bucky for his name.
“Bucky. You can call me Bucky.” She smiled.
“Y/n. Nice to meet you Bucky.” Bucky’s heart flipped in his chest at the sound of his name rolling off her tongue. His eyes followed her as she crouched down next to him, placing the med kit on the bench.
“Are you ok with me taking care of this or would you rather do it,” Y/n asked as she began to rifle through the box looking for all of the necessary supplies. Bucky was shocked, she just found this strange man in her barn and was going to help him out instead of calling the cops. He realized she was waiting for an answer, her eyes full of worry staring at him, waiting for an answer.
“Or, um, I can take you to the hospital, but that's a bit of a drive.” Bucky just shook his head.
“No, no. It’s fine. If you leave the supplies here I can take care of it. Thanks.” Y/n nodded standing up.
“Of course! I’ll get you a change of clothes. My brother left some clothes here, he’s about your height. Hopefully, they fit.”
Before Bucky could say anything else, Y/n walked out of the barn and disappeared, leaving Bucky alone with Jake and a med kit. Bucky gave the dog a final pet before tending to injury.
Once, he was cleaned up and in a fresh pair of clothes, Y/n brought him to the little farmhouse for some breakfast. Bucky sat on a stool watching Y/n cook.
“So how did you end up in my barn? It’s not every day that I get up to start chores and find a man in there.” She asked, flipping over the pancake in the skillet. Bucky chuckled scratching the back of his neck, trying to decide what to say.
“Well, uh… It’s kind of a long story...”
Tumblr media
A few days had passed since breakfast that morning, him spilling his entire life life story to this woman. She promised to try and help him get back to his team, however, the first snow of the season had fallen that same evening and there was no way for them to drive to the town some thirty miles away with the ice and snow covering the roads.
“Being in the middle of nowhere has its advantages and disadvantages.” She had told him, shoveling a path out to the barn the next morning. “The fact that no plow trucks come through here just happens to be one of the shitty things.”
Bucky felt strange just sitting around while she worked so he offered to help out while he was there. A sort of thank you for inadvertently saving his life. The more he worked around the farm, the more music he heard playing through his mind, but every time he tried to find the source, it would disappear and Y/N would appear from around a corner, tucking something into her pocket and then asking Bucky a question as she approached.
The same thing was happening again as Bucky heard the first few chords from a new song drift into his mind, the same volume as the song that first night he slept in the barn.
“Fell in love with a girl that's a few years younger. Was a sister of a friend, didn’t see it coming.”
Bucky set down the bale of hay he had started to take to the horses, to follow the music. He walked over towards the door of the barn, the music getting louder with each step he took.
“I was hanging with him when I heard the door open.”
He pushed open the door and looked out to see Y/n and Jake walking towards the barn. She had earbuds tucked in under her hat, humming softly, and with each step she took towards the barn the louder the music in Bucky's ears got. He felt his heart start to race, his mouth ran dry.
“She walked into the room with a smile and that’s when, her eyes looked at me and said quietly,”
Y/n looked up to see Bucky staring at her and plucked the earbuds out of her ears and tucked them into her pocket, the music playing in Bucky’s mind disappearing with them.
“Hey, Bucky! I was lookin’ for ya!” She smiled at him, continuing to walk closer. “I was wondering if you could help me with something a little different.” She was standing right in front of him now, her bright eyes locking onto his. His pulse started to quicken as he hoped the cold masked the blush forming on his cheeks.
“W-what might that be?” Y/n giggled and placed a hand on his shoulder sparks flooding throughout his body as she pushed him back into the barn.
“I have to round up the cows today, since it’s snowed that means all of the bot flies are gone so we can go ahead and deworm them. I was hoping you could tag along. I know you’ve probably never done anything like this but it would really help me out a ton.” She smiled sweetly at him as she paused by the tack room, heading inside to grab her saddle and other equipment for the task at hand.
“Uh sure, I’ll give it a go,” Bucky replied, following her into the small room, grabbing the other saddle sitting on the rack. It was then Bucky decided that he would do just about anything to get Y/n to smile at him like that again. It was so warm and bright that he felt ten times warmer than he did just moments ago.
“Awesome! Thank you so much, Buck! If you want to tack up Shanty I’ll hop on Zippy and we can go bring those cows up to the cattle shed!”
Bucky saddled up Shanty with some difficulty due to the fact he had no idea what the hell he was doing, but with Y/n’s help, the pair were ready to go. Bucky watched as Y/n skillfully mounted the red horse who was stomping around impatiently waiting for her to get on. Taking a deep breath, he carefully pulled himself up into the saddle and nodded for Y/n to lead the way. As the pair began to jog through the snow Bucky called out,
“I hope you know I haven’t been on a horse since 1943, an’ never used em’ on a farm before so I have no idea what I’m doin’ darlin’.”
Y/n let out a laugh that seemed to sing off of the ice that covered a nearby pond. She looked over her shoulder and Bucky was convinced he had never seen a more beautiful sight. The morning sun reflected off the snow, causing its golden glow to dance across the landscape. Its golden rays were blocked by the brim of her dark cowboy hat, but the leather band almost seemed to be turned into gold as the beams of light that slipped around the edges wove into the intricate braid. Her eyes sparkled with something so warm and bright that Bucky was sure he was seeing an angel in person.
“Don’t worry too much!” She replied, oblivious to the effect she had on the man.
“Shanty’s a pro. She can basically do this on her own, she just prefers having someone on her back or a little extra guidance.” Y/n explained as the cow herd came into view. “Just point her in the right direction, she will do the rest.”
Bucky nodded and watched as Y/n kicked Zippy forward toward the cows and once she rounded the back, the herd started running in his direction. Gripping onto the reins, he pointed Shanty in the direction and when the cows tried to jump out of line, Shanty would run and slide to a stop, forcing the cows to stay in a group as they ran towards the cattle shed.
The journey back to the cattle shed was considerably more work than the ride out, constantly trying to keep the frisky cows from darting off one way or another but eventually, they were all secured in the barn, Y/n smiled at Bucky.
“Thank you for your help. I can take it from here. Meet you inside for dinner? I prepped some ravioli last week that’s in the freezer.”
Bucky smiled and agreed, leading Shanty and Zippy back to the barn, the goofy grin remaining on his face all the way there.
Tumblr media
Bucky grumbled angrily as the wrench slipped out of his hand. He reached out from under the tractor with his left hand when he remembered that his left hand was, essentially, an all-purpose tool. After finally getting the stubborn bolt off, he pushed himself out from underneath the tractor and took a sip of the hot cider in his mug that Y/n insisted he take with him after dinner. In between bites of the best ravioli that he had ever eaten, Y/n mentioned that the tractor had a bust pipe and that he had gotten the parts but hadn’t had the time to fix it herself so naturally, Bucky set off to fix it as soon as the dishes were done.
Just as Bucky was about to get back to work, he heard a new melody whisper in his ear.
I'm flying, shining, bright like just like the Leonids, Heading for you.
Wiping his hands off on an old shop towel, Bucky made his way back to the farmhouse, and with each step he took, the music got a little louder.
Slowly, but surely, lighting up the pyramids, On my way to you
Kicking off his snow and mud-covered boots in the mud room, Bucky followed the sound of the music, to the back porch where he found Y/n sitting with a mug in her hands gazing up at the stars.
Ooh, ooh. I've fallen like a star for you
The music was so loud at this point, that Bucky was convinced that it was integrating itself into the very fiber of his being. Taking a steadying breath, he reached out a hand and placed it on Y/n’s shoulder startling her her slightly before realizing it was just him. He watched as she hit the pause button, and the music that was flowing so clearly stopped. Bucky felt his heart rate pick up. There is no way that he's finally found her after all this time.
“Hey Buck, What going on?” Y/n asks softly, offering a smile
“Can I see your Phone?” Bucky asks all in one breath.
Puzzled Y/n hands it to him. “Uh, sure why?”
“I just want to try something” He mumbled as he put the earbuds in and walked away from her to the opposite end of the porch. He locked eyes with her and hit play.
He watched as Y/n’s eyes grew wide, her hands flying up to cover her mouth. She heard it too. Bucky swallowed as he took a shaky step toward her, the music getting louder with each step he took until he was standing face-to-face with her.
Ooh, ooh. I've fallen like a star for you
“I think you’re my soulmate” He whispered, reaching out to cup her face with his flesh hand, the metal one still holding onto the phone.
Y/n blinked a few times in surprise before surging forward and tackling him in a hug planting a firm but warm kiss on his lips. Bucky blinked in surprise but responded immediately, wrapping his other arm around her and pulling her flush against his body.  Eventually, they parted and Y/n smiled up at him.
 “Does that mean you’ll stay here with me?” She whispered.
Bucky pressed his forehead against hers before he replied, “Forever and always, for as long as you’ll have me.”

To foster and encourage growth, you had to first begin with a seed — a start of a new life, the beginnings of a story. It was similar to how you met your husband if only a little unorthodox, but who were you to question a newfound tradition?

The morning was crisp, and the sun was bright, the beginnings of a new, hopeful day – one that you were excited to see the outcome. It was a Sunday, and the Farmer’s Market was in full swing of being set up. Even Bucky had elected to come and help on this occasion instead of working on the farm.
“Where do you want this?” Bucky asked, large crate in hand, this one full to the brim of your famous peaches.
You pointed to the end of your table. “Over there, please,” you replied. Bucky nodded and placed the crate down with a huff. “Thank you.”
“It’s lookin’ good, sweetheart,” Bucky said abruptly, right over your shoulder. You gasped quietly in surprise and turned to stare at him. “What?”
“Stop scaring the shit outta me,” you sniped, slapping his arm. “We’ve got shit to do now, c’mon.”
Bucky sighed and continued lugging crates from the bed of the truck to the stand, all while people started flooding the square, milling about the stands of produce and haggling for bargains.
An older woman, the greying strands of hair at her temples bright under the morning sun, stopped at your stall just as you finished setting up the jars of jam. “Hey there,” you greeted, beaming at her. “What can I get for you today?”
“Just some jam, love,” she said. You nodded and collected a couple of jars just as Bucky dropped the last crate with a groan. The older woman smiled at him as he stood behind you.
“All loaded, baby,” Bucky breathed, kissing you on the cheek. You nodded and pointed to a chair, indicating he should sit for a minute (if only to get him out of the way). “Damn right ‘m gonna sit after the hard work you made me do.”
“Ignore my husband,” you breathed, shaking your head.
The older woman laughed. “How did you two meet? I’ve seen you in these parts before, and everyone loves you both.”
Bucky laughed. “It’s my damn horse’s fault, ma’am,” he said, “the bastard was gone on her from the very first second.”
You rolled your eyes as the memory flashed through your mind.
The old truck you had borrowed from a friend rumbled down the road, gravel, and stone kicking up in its wake – the bitumen long overdue for a patch job.
It did add to the charm of your small town, though. Your family had spent generations farming the land and supporting the local economy by running endless farmer’s markets – a tourist hotspot, if you did say so yourself, especially going by the recent uptick in new arrivals.
The recent overtake of Parker’s Provisions by the newcomers , May and Peter Parker, had been a successful move – both having been welcomed and adored in equal measure by the townsfolk, Peter especially. That firecracker of a young man always made your day, rain or shine, and you were looking forward to your weekly supply run for the animals back home.
Though, the sight of a horse hitched at the front of the sprawling lot of buildings that made up the Parker’s Production lot was a shock. It wasn’t often that the ranchers and farmers on the outskirt properties actually rode into town. Instead, they always elected to bring their trucks and trailers.
Your truck came to a shuddering stop when you parked, and you killed the engine, taking just a moment to marvel at the horse hitched. It was a stallion, his face soft and kind, but his body was a whole other story. Muscles rippled and twitched as he stood while waiting for his rider – the build of a Quarter Horse very much evident in the stance of the creature. A barrel or cattle mount, you couldn’t quite tell.
His coat was a chocolate brown, with splashes of white over his flanks and legs, and a thick, pretty stripe adorned his face.
You couldn’t help but feel that while he looked at you, he was staring straight into you – deep into your being to reveal secrets and mysteries you kept hidden from the world.
It was unnerving, though assuring in the way that being seen was.
The driver’s door opened with a squeak, and you slid out of the truck and into the hot summer air outside. People milled about with bags and baskets, each one waving a small hello, and you smiled back at everyone politely. A loud voice inside the closest shed told you Peter was on site today, and you smiled.
“Hey, Pete!” you called, and a brunette mop of hair peeked around the doorway.
“Hey! Just a sec, I’ll be out with you soon,” Peter yelled back, disappearing again.
You chuckled and made to step towards the stallion, hand outstretched. “Hey, handsome–aren’t you a sight, huh?” The horse snorted, twitched his ears, and stared at you. “I know it’s hot out, but you look like your rider takes good care of you.”
Slowly, the stallion stretched his head out and sniffed the air around your hand, and once he made contact, the soft skin of his muzzle tickled your palm. “You’re just gorgeous,” you breathed, scratching his chin gently.
“Well, well, well–ain’t every day he finds a Peach he likes,” a voice drawled behind you, and you startled, spinning around on the spot. “Easy, love,” the man said, hands outstretched. “No harm done.”
“I’m sorry, I just- He’s gorgeous,” you rushed, hand over your heart. The man smiled and shook his head, the movement freeing his long hair from behind his ears. Taking a second, you took in the stranger. He was wearing a white tank top that was far too tight, a plaid jacket, and a pair of light jeans with boots – his hair was half up in a bun while the other half hung around his face, sticking to his skin from the sweat of a hot day.
“He is. A good horse, too,” the man said, still smiling. He walked closer, dug into his saddle bag, and pulled out his wallet. “Aren’t you, Colton? Lettin’ a pretty Peach love on you like that, huh?”
Colton snorted and nudged your shoulder, evidently displeased you stopped paying him attention. You chuckled and pet his neck, feeling the strong muscles under his skin. “A very good horse, indeed.”
The man grinned and shoved his wallet into his back pocket, then he offered you his hand to shake. “I’m Bucky, by the way–too distracted by the fact that my asshole of a horse actually lettin’ someone near ‘im that’s not me.”
This time you laughed, shaking Bucky’s hand and offering your name in return. “It’s nice seeing a fellow rancher out and about with his prize; makes me miss having my own,” you commented, slightly wistful. It had been years since you had owned a horse.
“I honestly jus’ couldn’t be bothered goin’ back home to get my truck, and Colton needed the exercise anyway, so.” Bucky shrugged. “Best be gettin’ back inside. Stuff won’t pay for itself.”
“Okay,” you said, “I best be going in there too. I have to pick up my order.”
“Oh!” Bucky exclaimed. Then, to your absolute and utter shock, he offered you his arm. “Together then?”
“Well, alright,” you laughed, placing your arm through his. “Why not.”
It was an hour later that you strode back through the doors to your truck, arms full with bags of feed while Bucky and Peter trailed behind you with their own arms full of bags – having had offered to help you carry, and you couldn’t resist the sight of seeing Bucky’s arms bulge under the strain.
And Lord above, he did not disappoint.
“Alright, that’s it, miss,” Peter huffed, heaving a bag into the truck’s bed. “See you next week, yeah?”
“Absolutely, Pete, thanks,” you called, waving to the young man’s retreating back. You turned to Bucky, smiling. “Well, it was good to meet you, Bucky.”
Bucky grinned. “Likewise, sugar. You should come and have coffee sometime.” He turned to Colton. “I know that bastard would love it if you came and fed him some peaches or somethin’–greedy sonofabitch,” he laughed, shaking his head at the hilariously deadpan expression on his stallion’s face.
“I would love to.” The words tumbled from your mouth before you could stop them, and you inwardly sighed. So much for subtlety. “It would be great. How about tomorrow? We can have lunch.”
“Sounds perfect to me, Peach,” Bucky said happily, saluting. “You get home safe now, I’ll come pick you up tomorrow–where do you live?”
You recited your address and smiled nervously, watching as Bucky mounted Colton and turned him around. “I expect all the stops pulled out, mister,” you joked, pointing at him.
“Can’t disappoint ya, honey–promise,” Bucky joked, “see you tomorrow!”
Colton snorted and started a slow trot away, Bucky’s hand loosely holding the reins as the stallion moved away and turned a corner, out of sight.
“He’s a decent boy,” a voice said behind you, and you jumped. May was smirking at you from the office. “Always kind and sweet–should give it a go, honey, can’t hurt.”
“You’re right,” you conceded a soft smile on your lips. “Can’t hurt. He ain’t bad to look at, either.”
May laughed and waved goodbye, and you jumped back into your truck, already thinking of all the ways tomorrow could go – or how it would end.

Gone Country(Bucky x Reader)
Tumblr media
A/N: Hey y’all! I just made this tumblr so yeah... But anyways right now I’m going to be re-uploading my fanfic Gone Country onto here(i will be uploading other ones once I done with this)...I only have the first chapter done but I just have to edit the second chapter and then upload it! Hope y’all have/had a wonderful day:)
Summary: Bucky Barnes, a rancher who lives in Hollow Gap, Montana, wishes that he could just find the one for him but he doesn't think that will ever happen.... That's until y/n l/n, a city girl, moves to Hollow Gap to help out on her grandpas ranch.
Word Count: 918
Gravel was hitting up against the bottom of Bucky's truck as he made his way down to his ranch, Winter Creek. He was just coming back in from Missoula, he had gone on yet another failed date. At this point he thought he was just going to be alone forever.
Bucky had sat by and watched as all his friends fell in love, got married, and then had kids. And if Bucky said he wasn't jealous of any of them he would be lying. Bucky just wanted to find the girl he was meant to be with and do the exact same thing all his friends have done.
But Bucky knew deep inside that it would be a while before it happened- or it would just never happen. After all he lived in Hollow Gap, Montana, a place that was considered to be the middle of nowhere and he was pretty sure no girl would want to move down here with him or make the hour long drive from Missoula just to see him. And he also had his ranch that took up, basically, all of his time—it was a miracle to him that he even found time to go on the date he went on tonight. He just didn't live in place nor did he have the time to find the one
As he pulled into the driveway he saw that Steve's truck was parked by the house, and then he noticed Steve sitting on the front porch step. Bucky parked his truck and got out, he walked over to Steve and said, "Hey punk, what're you doin' here?"
"Nat sent me, she wanted to know how your date went."
"Same as they always go,". Bucky said as he kicked at the dirt with his boot, "I should probably just accept the fact that I'm never gonna find the one."
Steve patted the step next to him, signaling for Bucky to sit down and said, "Not with that attitude, i'm sure you'll find her some day. And Nat also mentioned something about Tom L/N's granddaughter coming up from Boston to help him out with the ranch, Nat said she was most likely single, and your age, maybe you and her will hit it off."
"Maybe...." Bucky said with a sigh, knowing that she probably wouldn't even give him a second glance. "Let's get off that topic, how is little Clara doin,' Stevie and Ryder warmed up to her yet?"
Steve just laughed-- knowing Bucky was trying to change the topic--and said, "Clara has me wrapped around her little finger, she's gonna be a heart breaker, and as for the boys Stevie adores her, but Ryder doesn't like not being the baby anymore."
"He'll warm up eventually, if y'all ever need some help just call me and I'll take em for ice cream or something, if I have time."
"You really need to find a foreman Buck..." Bucky just gave Steve a quick nod. Steve then said "Thanks for the offer pal, might just take you up on it. Alrighty I know we talked for all of three minutes but I gotta get going back to the three little gremlins, See ya later pal, and who knows maybe she's the one," Steve then got up from the porch step, he patted Bucky on the back and then got into his truck and drove away.
Bucky stood there for a second watching the dust fly up in Steve's path, then he decided to do one final check on his cattle while he still had a little bit of sun.
He walked down to the barn, and got out all his tack. Then he went to go get his horse, Sargent, out from the pasture. Sargent, being the biggest people loving horse out of Bucky's three horses, ran right up to the gate--Sargent is a buckskin quarter horse, he’s quite a handsome boy.
"Hey Sarg, ready to finish up the day, I got some sugar cubes for ya when we are done bud." Sargent just nuzzled his head into Bucky's shoulder over the fence, Bucky took that as yes.
He then opened the gate and put on Sargents halter and lead rope. Once the pair got up to barn Bucky hooked him up to the cross ties, then groomed and tacked him up.
Once Sarg was ready, Bucky lead him out by the pasture and got onto Sarg, they went down to the cow pasture and did a quick check, just making sure that no cattle had gotten out and all of the herd looked good. Then Bucky rode fence real fast and everything looked good so Bucky called it a day and rode back up to the barn.
After Bucky was done putting away Sargent(Bucky made sure Sarg got plenty of sugar cubes) he went up to his house. The house felt lonely, like always, but for now Bucky just pushed away that feeling and went straight to his room. He took off his dirty clothes and then hopped into the shower. Once he was done in there he threw on a pair of sweats and a t-shirt. Before he got into bed he glanced at the clock and it read 9:33pm. He calculated he would get around seven hours of sleep tonight, which was pretty good to him considering how much sleep he usually got.
He then got into the bed and as soon as his head hit the pillow he was fast a sleep.

Hours later, I ride Jackal down the dirt road a few miles away from Blackbrook. I stayed long enough to talk to Pietro and help him get out of a tough situation. Most the time I would stay long, maybe a few days, but recent news of the increase of cattle wranglers has me wanting to be home. I need to make sure Clint and Natasha are holding the ranch down, as well as check on a few things. Last time I was there we had captured a few wild horses that had strayed to far from their herd.
The breeze whistles past me, the pack horse beside Jackal snorts. I needed an extra horse to help carry the supplies I had bought. Glancing around at the plains I wipe my brow with the back of my hand, it's still hot. Even an the sun begins to set. Deciding to make camp at a little grove of rocks, I turn Jackal and head over to them soon dismounting and stretching my limbs.
I then begin to unpack and unsaddle the horses, putting the saddle near an old fire pit, the coals are cold same as the rocks. It hasn’t been used in a while. Tying Jackal and the pack horse to an old log, I notice vultures circling in the air. Sometimes vultures mean bad luck, but here they could mean a meal or the killing of a human. So I pick up my rifle and sling it onto my shoulder before heading over, careful of where I put my feet so I don’t step on a rattlesnake.
The sight that greets me isn’t a pretty sight. A man lays face down in the dirt blood splattered on the dirt around him. A cut on his right arm is red and seems to have puss coming out of it. His left arm seems to be entirely made of metal, glinting in the fading light. I frown and swing my rifle up as I walk forward shooing the crows off, before tapping the tip of my boot against the man's side, noticing a bullet wound on his abdomen.
“Mister? You alive?” I ask, the slow rise of the man’s back tells me he is. Leaning forward to pick him up, he suddenly snarls head snapping in my direction and stumble quickly to his feet. “Woah, easy. Your hurt pretty bad.”
He doesn’t seem to notice an the bullet wound on his side bleeds again, it trickling down his pants. His blue eyes dart around, before landing on me
“Ah, there ya are,” I tilt my head to the side, resting the gun back on my shoulder. He staggers a bit but I catch him quickly before he falls, keeping him held with a hand.
“Let me help you. My camp is just a bit away. You won’t survive much longer if you keep bleedin’ like that,” I say, keeping ahold of his gaze.
He seems puzzled a moment before nodding but he places a hand on his side to stop the bleeding, pain flashing in his eyes before it fades behind his emotionless mask. I come up beside him and with no fuss from him, I sling his arm around my shoulders wrapping the rifle around my other one and help him over to the grove of rocks where my horses are.
Once there I set him down leaning against one of my saddles. “What happened to you?” I question, as I dig around in one of my packs pulling out some grain and a grinder as well as some water.
He shakes his head and motions to his throat. “Lost… voice..” His voice is raspy and hoarse.
I nod but place the grain in the grinder, adding a bit of water and start grinding them together with a tool. When the items are grinded into a paste I shift over and scoop some into my fingers and look at the wound on his arm. Infection is evident and the red skin around shows it being pretty deep. Lifting a finger I gently put the paste in the wound.
He grimaces, hissing slightly from the pain. “I know sorry, you don’t have the most pleasant wounds mister.”
When I’ve wrapped and cleaned up his wounds, I stand back and wipe my hands on my pants looking at him. He has leaned back, his chest rising and falling with labored breathing, probably from bruised ribs. He seems to be asleep, so I get to work putting together a fire in the small fire pit. After doing that I take out an apple and taking a bite from it, watching as the moon rises and the stars come out. It’s nights like these that fool you into believing that the west is a safe place. It’s all a facade hiding the truth, I have seen people die out here and I have killed men out here. It doesn’t take much to do so.
After I finish my apple I lean back against my saddle and pull the hat above my eyes, soon drifting off into darkness.
-----
The sun moves over my face, causing me to stirr from my sleep. It’s just cresting over the horizon, spilling reds and oranges over the blue sky. I lean up, stretching my arms high above my head before I stand, dusting off my pants. I then turn my head and look at the man from yesterday.
The guy lays against the saddle still, a blanket drawn over him. I walk over to him and gently nudge his side with my boot. “Mister, time to get up. We gotta get movin’ if we wanna make it to the ranch before nightfall,” I say, kneeling down beside him. He startles awake at my nudging, a panic look to his features before he relaxes nodding at my words. I help him up and quickly pick up the saddle putting the stirrup over the horn and slinging it along with the saddle pad over Jackals back. She snorts at the weight adjusting her footing, I walk around her back end and start to loop the rope holding the saddle around her stomach.
Once I finish her I saddle up the pack horse, glancing over at the man who checks his injuries. He looks up at me noticing my gaze. “You know how to ride partner?” I look over the saddle at him as I tighten the rope. He nodes his head, walking up to the packhorse patting his side gently. “Then I trust you to keep up, we may have to keep a quick pace to get where we need to be.”
The guy nodes again and after everything is loaded I help him get into the saddle. I then get onto Jackal, Tuck coming up to stand beside me. “Alright, just follow me. Try to bare through the pain alright?”
I dig my heels into Jackal’s side calling out, “Yah!” We take off at a slow gallop, the guy follows behind me actually keeping up and we ride off down the dirt road.

Chapter 2
Bucky arrived at the movies twenty minutes before he had arranged to meet you and then proceeded to mentally curse himself out the entire time because of how eager it made him look.  He was just considering leaving and coming back again so he could maybe come off as fashionably late when you appeared behind him and tapped him on the shoulder.
He jumped and spun around, instantly going into fight mode, and when he saw your slightly bemused expression, he instantly relaxed.  You were wearing another warm winter coat that looked impossibly spring-like.  This one was sky blue with daisies printed on it as if they were polka dots.  Your hat, scarf, and gloves were in a darker shade of blue, and on the side of your beanie was a crochet daisy that matched the ones on your coat.  “Hey, you’re early,” he said.
“So are you,” you said.
Bucky smiled sheepishly and ran his hand through the back of his hair.  “Yeah.  It’s been a while and I didn’t want to be late.”  He held out a bouquet of different colored tulips for you.  “I got you these.”
“Oh my,” you said, taking them and inhaling deeply.  “These are so out of season.  They must have cost a fortune.”
Bucky shrugged.  The bouquet did cost significantly more money than when he’d last bought a girl flowers, but as that was in 1943, he didn’t think it was fair to compare.  “It wasn’t so bad.  And I knew you’d like them.”
You leaned up and kissed his cheek.  Another first for this new life he had.  It felt like a static shock and he flinched a little, and then hoped to god you didn’t notice because he wanted there to be more of that.  He wanted that kind of physical affection that had been withheld for so long.  “I love them,” you said.  “Thank you.”
Bucky turned back toward the cinema and then debated what his next move should be.  He had the tickets.  Did he offer you his arm or just start walking?  There were so many new rules about dating and he realized he didn’t know any of them.  Did you hold doors and pull out chairs anymore?  Who paid for things?
While he was thinking, you slipped your hand into his and pulled him toward the cinema.  “Come on, slowpoke,” you said.
The warmth from your skin seemed to radiate out from you so that he could feel it through both his and your gloves.
“Do we need to buy tickets?”  You asked when you entered the building.
“I’ve got them,” he said.
You took off your gloves and shoved them in your coat and looked up at him.  “Then let me buy the candy.”
“Now that hardly seems fair,” Bucky said.  “The tickets were cheap.  You’ll have to mortgage your house for candy.”
You snorted.  It was an adorable sound but you quickly covered your face in embarrassment.  “Oh my god,” you mumbled.
Bucky laughed and rubbed your arm.  “That was cute, don’t worry.”
You shook your head.  “I can’t remember the last time I laughed like that,” you said.  “So now I’m gonna buy candy so I can pretend it never happened.”
He chuckled and followed you to the counter as you bought popcorn, jolly ranchers, and a couple of sodas before the two of you headed into the theater.  It was strange how familiar it felt to be on a movie date.  Like muscle memory.  He sat down in the assigned seat and you put your coat on your lap with the popcorn sitting in his.  There was the awkward start where you aren’t sure if you should be touching or not - not that there was much choice in such a confined space.  There was an accidental hand touch when both of you went for popcorn at the same time.  Then you snuggled into him during the sappy parts and even though having you pressed against him felt alien to him.  It felt familiar and comfortable and he put his arm around your shoulders and held you in a casual way he hadn’t done to anyone since before he was sent off to war.
It was dark when you both came out of the theater with your arm tucked in the crook of his.  “Do you want to get a bite to eat?”  He asked.
“I would love it.  Just something simple though,” you said.
He nodded and the two of you began walking down the street together.  “Thank you for this, Bucky,” you said as the two of you walked along.  “I never do this.”
“I’m pretty out of practice too,” Bucky admitted.
“Why is that?”  You asked.  “You seem like a natural.  Not to mention - you’re very handsome.”
Bucky looked at you, once again not sure if you were being completely honest with him or not.  Not just about not recognizing him, but about any of it really.  Questioning his reality had become second nature.  He was used to being lied to and used.  He was used to things being taken from him.  “You really don’t know who I am?”  He asked.
You stopped walking, a little startled, and looked him up and down.  “I don’t meet too many people, I know we haven’t met.”
“No,” Bucky said, shaking his head.  “I’m the winter soldier?”
“Winter…?”  You said, furrowing your brow.  “You control winter?”
Bucky laughed.  “No.  What?”
“Oh,” you said, relaxing a little.  “I don’t know what you're talking about.”
“Captain America’s friend?”  He asked, only to be met with the same look of confusion.  “The Avengers?”
“I’m so sorry,” you said.  “I don’t keep up with current popular culture.”
“You don’t know about the people disappearing and then the fight and them showing up five years later?”  Bucky asked.
“I mean… I know they all went away and came back, but I wasn’t…” you trailed off.
“Captain America?  Iron Man?  Thor?”
Finally, a glimmer of recognition reached your eyes and you smiled.  “You know Thor?”
“I mean, a little.  He’s a nice guy,” Bucky said.
“I know,” you said.  “He’s really funny.  Likes to fight a lot though.”
“Wait…” Bucky said.  “Do you know Thor?  Like you’ve met him?”
“Yes!  I’ve met him.  It was a long, long time ago,” you said, nodding enthusiastically.  “Are the gods… are we showing ourselves again?”
Bucky blinked at you.  “What do you mean ‘we’?”
You looked around and took his hand tugging him along.  “We should go somewhere to talk.”
He walked with you until you found a diner and the two of you ducked inside and slipped into a booth by the window.  You put your coat with your flowers beside you on the seat and neither of you said anything until the orders had been placed.
“It was easier back before,” you said as you began to play with the little tubs of half-and-half on the table.
“What was?”  Bucky asked.  “I don’t know what’s going on right now?”
“I’m a god, Bucky,” you said.
Bucky laughed.  He wasn’t even sure why because he knew a god.  He knew and had experienced far stranger things than gods.  But here, sitting in a diner with you, the thought just struck him as absurd.  “What?”
“Back before, when people were primitive and didn’t understand how things worked, we just walked with the mortals,” you said, answering a question he never asked as you looked out the window.  You turned your attention back to him and lay your palms flat on the table.  “I don’t know how to start the story.”
Bucky shook his head.  “The beginning?”
“That goes back to before I even was,” you said.  “And I don’t have all the story.  From what I understand, when the universe was born, the worlds were formed from a central point where all matter was one.  And then it exploded out in a mess of matter and energy.  Some of that energy you and I would call magic.  Some words, like Asgard and Olympus, were drenched in it…”
“Woah, hold up,” Bucky said.  “Olympus is real?”
“You’ve met Thor but you doubt the existence of the Greek Gods?”  You asked with your eyebrow raised.
“Right, okay,” Bucky said.  “Go on.”
“The magic on Earth is weaker and so the gods here are also weaker.  We came to be when people pray for us, even if that’s just a muttered hope, like “oh god let me pass this test,” you explained.
“So you’re telling me that there might be a god for the red light changing?”  Bucky asked.
You nodded.  “Oh yeah, they’re doing quite well for themselves.”
“That's…”  Bucky said and shook his head as he tried to absorb it.  “Not the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard,” he settled on.  “So what are you?”
“The spring thaw,” you said.
“What?  Like Persephone?”  Bucky asked.
“Well, no,” you said.  “For starters, she lives on Olympus and she’s way more powerful than I am.  And she covers all over Spring.  I’m just the part where the ice melts.  I was way stronger back before industrial farming.  People prayed to see the ice receding.  Now, it still happens but not with as much need.  Oh and also, when Persephone isn’t doing her thing, she has somewhere she goes.”
“What?  What does that mean?”  Bucky asked.  “Where do you go?”
You shrug. “I’m just not.”
“Not what?”
“Not anything,” you said.  “I’m here when people start wishing for the end of winter, and I’m gone when they stop.”
Bucky furrowed his brow and nodded.  “Would you believe me if I said I know how that feels?”
“Really?”  You asked.  “How?”
The waiter came over and placed their orders in front of them.  Bucky took a drink of his black coffee and wished it was something a little harder.  Not that alcohol would actually do anything.  “I guess I better start from the beginning too.”
As the two of you ate your meals, Bucky unloaded everything.  From when he was born, to going to war, to being captured by HYDRA and experimented on, not just once but twice.  About how they brainwashed him and had him commit unspeakable acts, and when they weren’t getting him to do these heinous things, they would freeze him, so that every time he woke he had no idea who he was or where he was or even what year it was.  How he’d broken out of it and had to adjust to life on the run 60 years after the last time he had control of his body.  How that had ended up going to shit and he’d opted to go on ice again because even that was better than living with what he had in his head.  How they managed to get HYDRA out and he was just settling into life again when Thanos happened and he’d just stopped existing.
The food was gone by the time he was done with the story and he was on his third cup of coffee.  He’d worry about staying up, but the caffeine would pass out of his system soon enough and besides, he didn’t sleep that great anyway.
You had listened intently, never interrupting, but the expression on your face told him how horrified and sad the story made you.  “... and then the Avengers stopped being a thing and I tried to cancel out some of my bad with a friend and then I moved here.”
You reached over and took his hand.  “I’m so sorry all that happened to you,” you said earnestly.  “And I can see why we were drawn to each other.”
“Why is that?”  Bucky asked.
“I bet you aren’t a big fan of the cold, huh?”  You asked.
He smiled and shook his head.  “No, you could say that.”
“Were you hoping for some sign of the thaw?”  You asked.  He smiled and nodded.  “And there I was.  I probably felt it too.”
“I’m glad you did,” he said.
“I’d like to see you again,” you said.  “Would that be alright?”
“How will that work if you’re only going to be here for such a short time?”  Bucky asked.
“Well,” you said thoughtfully. “I guess we’ll have to enjoy the brief time we have?”

James Bucky Barnes was known for many things, brilliant, cold, ruthless, fierce ruler of the Brooklyn mafia, amongst many other things. One thing he was not known for was his cool temperament when someone he cared for was in danger which is why his two most trusted men, Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson hesitated outside of their boss's office door, not sure how they would break the news. After sucking a deep breath, the pair walked into the room. Bucky sat at his sturdy redwood desk, feet propped up as he leaned back in his lavish office chair. His gaze snapped from the contract to his men standing in the doorway before returning to the papers in his hand as he spoke.
“How may I help you, gentleman?” His deep voice reverberated across the room.
“They’ve got her, boss,” Sam stated evenly, ice dancing across each word. Bucky was on his feet in an instant, staring down the mean in front of him.
“What?” He hissed, any other person in his company would have shivered at the venom lashing out of his words, but it just caused Steve to sigh looking his boss, his dear friend in the eyes.
“They got Y/n at the farm this morning. They just sent in a live video feed that Stark has pulled up in the conference room no-”
Before the words could finish leaving Steve’s mouth, Bucky was shoving past them and all but running down the hall to the conference room. He burst into the room to see Tony messing with the camera feed while the rest of his most trusted men sat around the table, staring at Bucky waiting for his reaction. Bucky walked over to his chair placing his hands on the back of it as he stared at the screen playing the live video feed of Y/n sitting there, tied to a chair with some plastic-coated twine, no doubt from the truck she was in earlier that morning.
Bucky’s eyes traced over her frame, looking for any injuries. If there was so much a hair out of place he thought as his ringed fingers gripped the plush material even harder, causing his knuckles to turn white. As he continued his assessment he landed on her face and it was then that he sucked in a breath, taking notice of how her once soft lips were now busted up and the small gash across the bridge of her nose. What caused him to let out a breath was the overall look on her face. She was livid. Her jaw clenched tightly, her once sparkling eyes dark with fury, he could practically see the rage pouring off of her. Evidently, the guards standing on either side of her took notice as they began to shift uncomfortably.
She's going to be fine. Bucky thinks to himself as he lets out a small sigh of relief.
Bucky pulled out his chair and sat down calmly, catching everyone in the room, including Steve and Sam who had joined the room just a few moments ago, off guard. He cocked his head sideways,
“Will you let them know that we are all present Stark? That seems to be what they are waiting on.” He spoke, his tone even and calm causing everyone to share looks as Tony patched in the audio.
“Afternoon Barnes.” A voice called out as a figure walked around from behind the camera revealing Brock Rumalow, the leader of the rival mob who had been fighting with the Barnes Corp. For many years.
“Looks like you are starting to slack, she was an easy grab.” Rumalow sneered as he approached Y/n, walking around her chair as he ran his hand up her arm and wrapping a hand around the back of her neck causing an even more crossed look to appear on her face.
“Such a shame, I don’t understand why you would let such a pretty little thing out of your sight.”
The atmosphere in the conference room was tense. Everyone knew about the sweet little cattle rancher Bucky fell in love with many months ago. He had finally brought her around during the Christmas party last month where she was loved by everyone who was able to talk with her. However, she was new to this world, his world and so everyone was worried about her the moment they heard she was taken, but watching her now, she didn’t seem the least bit scared, more annoyed than anything, causing confusion to ripple through the air, but no questions were asked as Rumalow continued speaking,
“I believe she has a few things to say to you, James.” He crowed walking away from Y/n with a pat on her cheek, returning to his position behind the camera while she let out a loud huff.
“Yeah, I got some things to say alright. If you aint here in the next hour, I’m gonna be walking home myself. I got a mare due any day now and these asswipes didn’t bother to close the cattle gate after they got me so now all the cattle are probably running amuck stressing out poor Parker.”
Bucky let out a soft chuckle, only Y/n would be worried about her poor farm hand while she sat tied down to a chair by her boyfriend's rival gang.
“I got the location of the camera Buck,” Tony calls out from behind the computer, “It’s only a few blocks away, in that old warehouse on the junction of 5th Avenue and Bakers Street.”
Bucky brushed invisible dust off his pants and started to speak when there was a large commotion coming from the video feed.
Everyone watched in pure shock as Y/n snapped the twine holding her in place, jumping up and kicking a chair at one guard and wrapping the now wrecked twine around the other's neck yanking him down to the ground, his skull hitting the floor with a sickening crack.
Once the guards were dispatched, Y/n glanced to her left before darting off in that direction, the shock of her escape must have finally worn off of Rumalow because everyone, except for Bucky, jumped to their feet as gunshots began ringing out behind the field of view of the camera. There is a loud metallic “thwang!” before Y/n returned to view, holding an old shovel with a small smattering of blood on it and an even more disgruntled look on her face as she examines her once clean cream and blue plaid shirt that was now ruined by a few small patches of blood.
Bucky smiles as he hears a few curses leave her mouth along with a “I just got the blood out of this shirt”.
Y/n then walks up to the camera, letting out a huff as she picks it up and starts making her way towards the side exit. She glances down at the camera before she starts speaking,
“By the looks of it, you have 45 minutes to get here before I start walking, which believe me you do not want me doing that. ‘Cause I swear to God and all that is holy James Buchannan Barnes if that foal is on the ground by the time I get back I’m whooping your and everyone else in that room's asses.”
Bucky chuckles and stands up looking at Sam and Steve as he motions for them to come with him to the garage to pick up Y/n.
“It looks like she had them after all. Bucky muses as they enter the elevator. The other men nod in agreement as Sam then says, “Remind me to never piss her off.”

Master List // Previous Chapter // Next Chapter
- - -
Bucky gave you a refresher course on horse riding and how to steer the animal in the front pasture before leading you to a trail toward the back of his property. It weaved through his land, into a small patch of pine trees and across a trickling creek.
“I cut this trail myself last spring. It was quite the project and I’ve only ever ridden it twice since.”
You hum, taking in the scenery. “It’s beautiful. Do you have any other projects or things you want to add?”
“I’d like to get a dog, maybe a couple goats someday. I don’t really have many projects in mind, but there are a couple of places I would like to visit that I haven’t had the chance to yet.”
“Like what?” you asked.
To your surprise, Bucky hadn’t been to many of the national parks in the state.  Out of Olympic National Park, Mt. Rainer, Mt St Helens, and Glacier National Park, he’d only been to Olympic National Park. You’d been to each of them, at least twice. Bucky really wanted to go see the whales on the coast, too.
You mentioned wanting to hike the Alps someday and Bucky smiled, looking impressed. He said he wanted to eat his way through Europe; you agreed, noting that you wanted to drink your way through Europe, as well. Bucky threw his head back and laughed at that, and it made your smile stretch even wider.
“Well, can’t really take a day off with a ranch.”
“Hire a ranch hand,” you suggested.
Bucky hummed. “That’s a good idea.”
 It was an enjoyable ride to say the least. You face west on the way back to the barn. The sun warmed your face and you couldn’t help but close your eyes and sigh. When you opened your eyes, Bucky was staring at you.
“It’s so peaceful out here. So beautiful.”
“You got that right.” He hadn’t taken his eyes off of you and his voice was deeper, huskier. “You’re welcome to come out here anytime, ya know. Doesn’t just have to be for milk and eggs.”
You smile back at him. “Well, thank you for the invitation.”
Once at the barn, Bucky helped you dismount, hands firm on your hips and your hands on his broad shoulders. His hands lingered on your hips and you looked up at him through your eyelashes. He cleared his throat as he let go of you and tended to the horses. Bucky showed you how to hose off the horses, feel their legs for cuts or swelling. He made you stand to the side when he checked their hooves, though. Then you turned the horses out into the pasture.
“Hungry, slick?”
“Always. Whatcha got in there?” you nod towards his house.
“Some frozen pizza. Maybe some stuff for spaghetti. I don’t usually have friends over.”
Friends, you repeat in your mind.
Bucky’s pantry was full of staples: oatmeal, cereal, a variety of noodles, lots of cans and jars. You washed up and prepared to start cooking. You pulled out as many spices as you could find to add to the sauce. Bucky offered to help, but you insisted on doing it yourself.
“I’ve gotta go milk the cows again, you okay in here?” You nodded and he stepped out.
From the kitchen window you watched Bucky head to the dairy barn. Even his gait was sexy. You shook the thought out of your head and got to cooking. Soon everything was done and Bucky was still outside. You weren’t sure how long it took to milk three dozen cows, so you sat down on his couch and looked around. On the coffee table was a laptop, and a notebook, maybe a journal. He had two bookshelves full of books, old and new.
“Slick? Where’d ya g-oh! There ya are. We ready to eat?”
“Yep. Wash up, sit down. I’ll fix your plate.”
Bucky raised his eyebrows at being bossed around, but obeyed. “Smells great, Y/N.” He grabbed himself a beer before he sat.
“It is great, Bucky, I made it,” you smirked as you sat down with your plate and started eating.
After the meal, Bucky insisted on doing the dishes without your help. About the time he finished, you started yawning. “Tired, slick?” You smiled sleepily. “I guess I oughta take ya home then.” You stretched as you got up and headed out into the dark.
As Bucky opened the passenger door of his truck, you looked up. Above you were billions of stars, twinkling down at you. You couldn’t see stars like this in the city. There were so many in some parts it looked cloudy. You saw a quick streak across the sky.
“Oh my gosh! A shooting star! I saw a shooting star. Wow. I haven’t seen one of those in years.” You sighed, content.
When you came back to earth, Bucky was grinning at you. “This is the best place to watch the stars. Barely any light pollution.”
You yawned again and nodded as you got into the cab. Bucky drove you home, quietly singing along to his country music, much to your annoyance. Upon arrival, he shut the truck off and got out to come around and open your door.
“Such a gentleman, James.”
He laughed, “My momma raised me right.” He stood next to you as you dug for your keys. “Today was fun. I had a really good time, Y/N.” The way his lips formed your name. It was no different than anyone else said it, but it made your skin tingle.
“Me too. You’re not terrible company.” You smirk up at him.
“You either.”
You laughed, but inside you fought every urge to kiss him again, too soon. There was still so much you wanted to know about him. “I’ll see you later then, Buck.”
Bucky’s lips twitched. “See ya, doll.”
It wasn’t actually that late when Bucky had dropped you off. By the time you showered and Grams stopped interrogating you on your “date” (her words, not yours) and went to bed, it was only 11:00. You were curled up in bed reading an absolutely gripping novel when your phone buzzed with a text.
Bucky: hey
You: hello
you free Saturday?
depends
oh ok then nvm. Goodnight.
I’m kidding. what did you have in mind?
nah you’re probably busy
bucky :(
this weekend is the peak of the perseids meteor event
we could watch it here
at my place
that sounds like fun!!
I’ll bring the snacks
Sounds good. Come by around 9?
can’t wait :)
It was true. You really couldn’t wait. You were suddenly wide awake with excitement. You had to tell someone, so you go to pull up Brad’s number. You hadn’t paid any attention to your phone all evening and were surprised to see a message from him. You almost screamed when you saw it.
Aaron had proposed!
You immediately facetime them to congratulate them, tearing up as they tell you the story. You were absolutely over the moon for them. They told you to expect the save the date in the mail and Brad specifically said Bucky had to come with you. He said weddings were the best excuses to get a date alone and get laid. You promised you’d ask Bucky, as a friend, and before they let you go.

Song // Dance Routine // Footloose vers.
After Bucky asked you out, it took a little over a week to be able to get some time off. It was the same for him as well; after he had asked you out, the next day he was assigned for a mission.
You both understood that you both had jobs to do, so there was no discourse between you and him.
During that time, you were swamped with work: making schedules, preparing interviews, preparing for the next debriefing, all of it. By the time your time off came close, you were relieved.
You had decided, per Bucky’s request, to have your date at a horse ranch that was in upstate New York. You texted Bucky (as he texted you prior) to wear casual clothes for the date (casual shirt, jeans, boots).
He had originally wondered why, but he just figured to just roll with it.
After he returned to the tower and after the debriefing, he went straight to bed, anxiously waiting for the next day.
~~
The night passed by quickly as Bucky woke from his slumber around eight-ish. As he got up in only his sweatpants, he didn’t notice that you were in the kitchen also as he made himself a cup of coffee.
“Good mornin’ Bucky!” You say to him happily as you sip your coffee as well.
“Mornin’ doll.” Bucky replied with a smile. You just smiled more at the nickname he gave you. “I’m really excited for our date today.” He tells you as he leans against the counter.
“Me too!” you say to him, Bucky seeing your dimples as you smile. “Just be ready in a few hours, maybe around ten so we can be there by noon.” You till him, taking another sip of your coffee.
“Where are we going?” Bucky asks out of curiosity.
“It’s ah surprise!” You say to him as you cock your eyebrow teasingly. “Just be ready by ten. Dress casually!!” You tell him after pouring the last bit of coffee in the sink and leaving the mug there as well.
All Bucky could do is just smile at your antics. He couldn’t wait till ten.
~~
After 2 hours of getting ready, you finally emerge from your room; you curled your hair, making sure your highlights showed through your Y/H/C hair. You were also wearing Y/F/C flannel, the sleeves rolled up to the elbow; you had tucked it into your skinny jeans, covering some of the ruffle with one of your belts that had a buckle, and wearing your lucky red boots.
As you walk down the hallway towards the living area, the heels of your boots signifying your presence.
Once Bucky saw you, his eyes nearly popped out of his head and his chin almost hit the floor. He was pretty sure that some of the male members of the team were the same way.
“Wow.” He says as he takes a breath. “Now I just feel underdressed.” He says jokingly.
“Nah! You look fine!” You tell him, brushing off his side comment. He was wearing his red Henley, slim fit jeans that shaped his thick thighs, and his steel-toed boots. “Ya ready?” you asked excitedly.
“Ready as I’ll ever be, doll.” Bucky said as he stepped aside, allowing you to take the lead to the elevator.
The last thing you guys heard was the other members of the team making catcalls at you both.
~~
You allowed Bucky to drive your pickup to your destination, since you were the one giving the directions. On your way there, Bucky would always ask where you were heading, and you always responded, “It’s a surprise!”
Other than that, he would ask about your life down south and you would answer as truthfully as you could.
Time seemed to be going by as you reached your destination in record time.
“What’re we doin’ here, doll?” Bucky asked, confused.
“We,” you start as you grab something from the tool box of your pickup. “are going horse-back riding.”
After you had said that, you placed something on top of his head: it was your brothers rancher hat, also known as a cowboy hat.
Bucky just laughed as he realized what you put on his head, re-adjusting it and seeing that you put yours on as well.
“It’s been a while since I’ve ridden a horse, doll.” Bucky says flustering a bit as you grabbed his flesh hand and led him towards the stables.
“You’ll be fine! Ah have faith you’ll do great!” You said back to him.
As you both reached the stables, Bucky’s face scrunched up in disgust because of the smell.
“Jeezus! It smells like shit in here!” He complained as he tried to waft the smell away.
“Well, yer only half right, shuga’.” You laugh as you both see horses in front of you. “Go ahead and pick a horse, were gonna be goin’ on a two-hour trail when our guide gets here.”
As you left to pick out your own horse, Bucky was nervous to choose his. As he said before, it’s been a while since he’s ridden a horse; he’s just afraid to scare it or hurt it.
You sense his nervousness, reassuring him and instructing him to approach quietly and slowly.
He did as you instructed, the horse nudging into his metal palm as his flesh hand stroked its long neck. He had gained the creatures trust, putting a smile on his face as he began to lead it out of the stables by the reigns.
Once you were both outside, your guide introduced themselves and then mounted their horse. You mounted yours with ease; Bucky, on the other hand, was another story.
Let’s just say it took him a few tries until he was able to mount his horse.
After you both settled onto your beasts, your guide led you both on the trail. Bucky had never been happier and at peace in his entire life.
~~
After they spent the last 2 hours on the trail, riding their horses, Bucky was a bit saddle-sore. You got on him about it, but he just brushed it off. He definitely wouldn’t mind going riding again.
Since the day is still young, you both decided to go and grab a bite to eat; the owners of the ranch said there was a Country Music Bar/Restaurant town the way, twenty minutes from there. You both decided to head there to have dinner.
Upon arrival, Bucky was a gentleman through and through; he helped you out of the car, offered his arm and opened the door of the restaurant for you. You were quite flattered by the gesture, making a comment saying that people aren’t as chivalrous nowadays.
“That’s cause they choose not to, doll.” Bucky said as they entered the building to be greeted by a hostess.
“How many?” she asked nicely, smiling to you both.
“Two, please.” You said, placing your arm in Bucky’s again. He smiled, rubbing the back of his head bashfully at the gesture.
“Of course. Do you want a seat at the bar, booth or table?” The hostess asked, before escorting. You both said table at the same time, making you giggle; the hostess just smiled again and began to escort you to your table.
Since you were inside, you got a great view of the dance floor they had on the lower level. The place was a bit dark on the inside, but it was to be expected since it had a bar.
The hostess led you to a table closer to the dance floor. They didn’t have much tables on the upper level, so they sat you at a small table a few feet from the open space.
You both settled down on your table when your waiter comes to take your order.
“Are there any band playin’ tonight?” You asked after the waiter wrote your order down.
“I think a band is playing a couple line dancing songs.” The waiter said with a small smile.
“They are?” Bucky asks in wonder. He has no idea how to line dance, but it would be a great show to see.
“Awright!” You say excitedly as the waiter goes to deliver your order.
After a couple songs, you and Bucky just chatted, ate and drank, enjoying each other’s company and having a great time.
While you ate, the band also took a break until they started a song you enjoyed so much: they started to play Fake ID by Big n’ Rich.
“Oh. Mah. God! I love this song! Ya wanna dance??” You ask excitedly as you see some people go into the dance floor.
“No, no! You go! I’ll watch!” Bucky yelled through the hoots and hollers.
You didn’t need to be told twice as you went to the dance floor as the song started:
Hey, I've been driving all over the town On my cellphone wearin' it out And I finally tracked you down
Hey, everybody says you're the man The final piece to my master plan You got my world in the palm of your hand
Well I know that you got it Come on and just sell it Got the cash up in my pocket You know I gotta get it
Hey mister won't you sell me a fake ID There's a band in the bar that I'm dying to see I got my money and you got what I need Hey mister won't you sell me a fake ID
After the first chorus started, Bucky just saw a different side of you; his eyebrows shot up as you swayed your hips to the beat of the music.
He definitely liked this side of you.
Hey, don't even think about tellin' me no It's only twenty minutes 'till the show Hey mister turn it over let's go
No, I ain't gonna need a receipt Just make sure that it looks like me So the bouncer don't call the police
And don't tell my daddy Stole the keys to his caddy Don't dilly dally I gotta get the hell out of this alley
Hey mister won't you sell me a fake ID There's a band in the bar that I'm dying to see I got my money and you got what I need Hey mister won't you sell me a fake ID
Here's my money, now get out of my way Gonna push my luck right up to the stage
When that part of the chorus ended, you did a fuckin’ backflip and continued to dance the routine! Bucky didn’t expect that and because of it, he put his hands through his hair as the patrons clapped and cheered.
Hey mister won't you sell me a fake ID There's a band in the bar that I'm dying to see I got my money and you got what I need Hey mister, hey mister
Hey mister won't you sell me a fake ID There's a band in the bar that I'm dying to see I got my money and you got what I need Hey mister won't you sell me a fake ID
Hey mister won't you sell me a fake ID There's a band in the bar that I'm dying to see I got my money and you got what I need Hey mister won't you sell me a fake ID Hey mister, hey mister
As the last of the lyrics ended the song, the crowd roared with applause; everyone that was dancing the routine patted your back and gave you high-fives. You just laughed and smiled through the entire time as you made your way back to Bucky; your hair was all over the place as you tried to attempt to fix it before returning to your date.
Bucky was already standing, cheering and clapping for you as you returned; you gave him a hug and he returned it. The cheering died down after the next song started to play; you both took this as your que to leave and head back home.
“How in the hell did you learn those moves, Y/N?!” Bucky asked you excitedly as you both entered your pickup.
You just laughed at his question, still a bit tired from dancing as Bucky drove you both back to Avengers Tower. “A girls’ gotta keep ‘erself occupied while her ‘er brothers did guy stuff.” You explained, still smiling and laughing. “I’m just gonna wonder when the rest o’ the team is gonna react if they see that on the internet.”
“They’d be very impressed as I am.” Bucky said, looking at you as he drove, keeping one hand on the wheel.
“Well, Ah’m glad you had a good time, Buck.” You said as you laid your head on the back of your seat.
“I had a great time, Y/N.” Bucky said, placing his flesh hand on yours (since his metal hand was on the wheel). “I’d love to take you out again.” He said, rubbing his thumb over your knuckles.
“I’d hafta check mah schedule, but Ah’d love that too.” You said to him with a sweet smile.
Bucky just smiled back, thinking about the next time he would take you out the entire trip back to the tower.
~~~~~
Once you’ve arrived back, you and Bucky walk hand-in-hand inside; Steve was waiting on you both as you entered the common area.
“I see that the date went well.” Steve said suggestively to you both, but Bucky knew it was directed at him.
“It went great, but now I’m just a bit tuckered out; Imma go hit the sack.” You said to them both as you reluctantly let go of Bucky’s hand. “I really had a great time, James. I can’t wait fer next time.” You say to him, placing a small peck on his cheek. “Good night. ‘Night Steve.” You said as you left to rest for the night.
“Goodnight, doll.” Bucky said to you, making you smile as you left.
“‘I can’t wait fer next time.’” Steve imitates you to mock his best friend playfully; that ends him being pushed playfully by said best friend as he smiled.
“Don’t try to talk southern, punk. It doesn’t suit you.”
Asgardian Valentine // Thor x Reader
Pairing: Thor x Reader (POC), Slight Winter/Widow and Scarlett/Vision, Bonus Steve, Tony, Bruce, Pietro and Sam. Word Count: 2.2k+ Warning: Super cute Valentines fluff, pls enjoy this holiday fluff. Summary: Despite not being one to celebrate the holiday, Reader is a big help to the others. Vision still can’t cook by himself. Pietro is precious. Feelings are hard. Thor is a sweet giant dork, pass it on.
A/N: Okay I was really inspired to write this because I don’t see a lot of Thor fics (that aren’t Loki centered) and the LOML needs more love ya know? Also look a that gif. Look at him. I love him send help.
Inspiration: “Roses” ~ Shawn Mendes “You can tell me to stop if you already know Though I’m not sure my heart can take it But the look on your face says don’t let me go … And I have to be honest with you baby Tell me if I’m wrong and this is crazy But I got you this rose and I need to know Will you let it die or let it go?”
Tumblr media
You’d completely forgotten about Valentine’s Day. Hell, someone in your line of work never had much time for the smaller holidays anyway. The heightened antics around the Compound clued you in; romance was in the air.
Eating breakfast in the Team kitchen was always eventful. Today was no exception. Despite the fact that you weren’t an official Avenger, the Team still considered you a member of the family, however reclusive you may be. Fixing yourself a small bowl of cereal for breakfast you settled in at the island. Vision was frantically trying his hardest not to burn the surprise waffles he was making for Wanda. He was veritably perfect in nearly every way, but cooking was the only thing that escaped him.
“I followed the recipe exactly, I don’t understand why they keep burning,” he mumbled mostly to himself. You couldn’t help but giggle; his dedication was certainly impressive. Finishing your breakfast, you decided to help him out.
“Would you like some help, Vis?” Despite your best efforts, you couldn’t keep the smile out of your voice.
“Yes, if you please. You’re very kind to offer.”
“The secret is to veer off recipe. Every waffle maker is different.” He smiled warmly at you.
Under your tutelage, Vision managed to make a very delicious breakfast tray for Wanda. He thanked you profusely when you offered to take care of the cleanup while he surprised the still sleeping witch. Smiling to yourself, you set to work on cleaning the kitchen.
You were nearly done with kitchen clean up when Bucky wandered in the kitchen with a bouquet of roses looking frazzled. You were half tempted to chuckle but something stopped you. He paced frantically, mumbling quietly to himself. Rose petals began falling to the floor.
“Something wrong, Barnes?” you asked. He didn’t respond immediately. He seemed to stare completely through you. Sometimes those clear blue eyes of his were unnerving.
“I just…need everything to be perfect, you know? Natasha, she’s—I mean, she’s everything and I just need everything to be perfect.”
A wave of understanding coursed through you. He and Natasha had been a couple only a few months but the way they were together seemed as though they’d been that way all their lives. Setting aside the last of the dishes and drying your hands, you moved to stand in front of Bucky. Gripping his worried face in your hands, you forced him to stop pacing and look at you.
“Barnes, I’m sure whatever you have in mind will be absolutely flawless. She’s going to love it just because you took the time and effort to plan it out. Trust me, it’ll be fantastic,” you said. He visibly relaxed under your assurances. Suddenly his lady-killer smile lit up his entire face; with a wink he thanked you. You watched him saunter off to impress the love of his life. With a small smile on your face, you couldn’t help but feeling a little envious; you missed Thor.
—————-
Unbeknownst to you, Thor had enlisted the help of Steve, Tony and Bruce to plan your Valentine’s surprise. The boys were working as quickly as they could to cover your room in the thousands of Asgardian flowers Thor brought back from his secret trip. It was his first Valentine’s with a Midgardian and he wanted it to be the best one he could create. Tony and Steve spent the last two weeks teaching Thor different romantic techniques they thought would help him impress you. Bruce stood off to the side laughing at their collective ridiculousness. Romance had never been his forte.
“[Y/N] is approaching the room, sir,” alerted FRIDAY. Thor froze in panic. They weren’t ready yet!
“Quick, Steve, go distract her!” Tony half whispered.
“Me? Why me? Why not you? Everyone knows you’re the king of distractions,” Steve sassed back.
“That’s not—that’s a very good point actually. Thor needs me and Bruce here to set up the projection system, so it has to be you.” Bruce was busy setting up the laptop to stream Thor’s surprise to the silk screen Tony was currently installing in your ceiling. Steve sighed in resignation. He left your room only to collide with you in the hallway.
“Oh shit, are you okay, Cap?” you asked rubbing your nose.
“I’m alright, [Y/N]. Seems like I should be asking you that question,” he laughed. You shot him half a smile; the pain in your nose faded quickly. Wait…what was Steve doing in your room?
“…Isn’t that….my room?”
“Uh yeah, Tony needed my help with some of the upgrades he’s doing,” he half lied. Lucky for him, he was believable.
“Oh…okay.”
“Have you had lunch yet?”
“It’s only 11 am, Steve.”
“All I’m hearing is ‘feed me, Steve’.”
“Hahaha, okay. What did you have in mind?” He led you away from your room and back to the kitchen. Even though Steve was doing his best to distract you, the feeling he was hiding something was unshakable. What was going on??
When the sound of voices faded away completely, Bruce gave the all clear sign. A uniform sigh of relief echoed through the room. Tony finished installing the screen and was showing Thor how to work the remote to raise and lower it. Bruce put the final touches on the laptop projection set up. The flowers were beautifully arranged around your room. An assortment of chocolate kisses and jolly ranchers were scattered across your bed. A stack of your favourite movies and a large bowl of popcorn were set up on your nightstand. Everything was perfect.
“You sure you got it, ThunderBoy? I’m happy to give you another tutorial,” Tony teased.
“I’m from another world, Tony. I’m not an idiot.” Between Thor’s annoyed stare and Tony’s shocked face, Bruce couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
“I keep telling him that, but his ego prevents him from believing people can be smarter than him,” laughed Bruce.
“Okay, okay. That’s enough making fun of Tony. I get it, I’m an ass sometimes. You want me to go get her?”
Thor nodded graciously, “Please.”
——-
Who knew Steve Rogers was such a crack up? Your lunch was long forgotten since you, Sam and Pietro were doubled over with laughter.
“Did you really tell him ‘I can do this all day?’” Your sides and cheeks ached; Steve was doing a damn good job of cheering you up.
“What can I say,” Steve replied, “I’ve never been one to back down from a bully.”
At this point Pietro had fallen to the floor laughing uncontrollably. You weren’t sure what was funnier: Pietro making a complete fool of himself, Sam laughing like an idiot at him or Steve’s beet red face as he was telling embarrassing stories from his pre-serum days. Tony strode into the room, clapping his hands for attention; even in his pjs he had to make an entrance. Bruce trailed in less ostentatiously behind him. You rolled your eyes at his antics.
“What’s up, Stark?”
“A certain Asgardian deity as requested the presence of [Y/N] in her chambers,” he said with a sly smirk. Your face lit up like a Christmas tree. Thor was back!
“If you lovely gentlemen would excuse me,” you stated. They grinned mischievously at you. Something was definitely up.
Thor paced your room nervously awaiting your arrival. He’d never been lucky enough to plan something so extravagant or romantic for someone. Even though the two of you were just friends, he hoped you would be open to something a little more. He hoped you’d love it. He hoped you’d love him. Your heart raced in anticipation; your friendship with your favourite Avenger was arguably the best thing about living on the Compound. If you were more honest with yourself, you’d admit friendship wasn’t the only reason you loved spending time with him. Nothing could have prepared you for what awaited you in your room.
Thor heard the door open and glanced up anxiously. You were utterly frozen in the doorway. Your spy training made your face nearly impossible to read; Thor’s enhanced hearing picked up the pounding of your heart. He hoped that was a good thing.
“Holy…” you breathed. The sight of nearly two thousand Asgardian lilies covering the entirety of your room stole your breath away. It only seemed to get better from there. A trail of petals formed a path from the door to the bed. Two kinds of your favourite candy decorated the mattress. Your eyes finally settled on a nervous Asgardian in the middle of the room. You gasped softly. Standing before you, dressed in a red v neck and faded jeans was the man who had somehow managed to build a home in your heart. He looked beautiful.
“Do you like it?” he whispered.
Words were lost to you. Your mind was blank with shock. Reacting on nothing but pure instinct, you launched yourself into Thor’s arms. A gentle ‘oof’ escaped his mouth when he caught you; he laughed and picked you up easily. Burying your face into his neck, you wrapped your legs around his waist. You could feel his heart pumping in rhythm with yours. Home.
Thor wasn’t sure what kind of reaction he’d get from you when you finally saw your surprise. This was everything. Holding you in his arms, your heartbeat in total sync with his was nothing short of perfection. If this is the kind of reaction he’d get then Valentine’s Day was definitely a Midgardian holiday he’d have to celebrate more often.
“I missed you so much, Thor,” you murmured into his neck.
“I missed you too, Princess,” he said into your hair. He shifted underneath you and you became painfully aware that you were indeed wrapped around his waist like a child. Way to go, [Y/N]. That’s not obvious at all. Quickly dislodging yourself from your friend, you stepped back and grinned sheepishly.
“Sorry,” you mumbled. His deep laughter echoed through the room. Hooking his finger under your chin, he lifted your embarrassed face to meet his gaze. You were thankful your dark skin prevented you from visibly blushing. A warm smile and eyes you could absolutely get lost in greeted you kindly.
“Please don’t be embarrassed. I don’t mind.” He pressed a soft kiss to the top of your head. Oh no, you were already addicted to the feeling of his lips on your skin. Oh no.
Clearing your throat, you gestured around the room. “Did you really do all this for me?”
“Yes. I did however, have some help. I was told grand gestures of romance were the best way to tell someone how you feel about them.” He watched your perfectly groomed eyebrows furrow in confusion. Did he just say…?
“How you feel…?” You couldn’t bring yourself to cross that bridge just yet.  Feeling slightly lightheaded, you decided sitting down was the safest option to receive his news. Thor sat next to you, taking your hands in his. His oceanic blue eyes were hopeful; you could stare at them until the end of time. He opened his mouth to speak but the words escaped him. For once he wished he had Loki’s gift of word craft or Baldr’s gift for poetry. He saw your face fall. Surely you couldn’t think he didn’t love you? Since words failed him, he decided to do what he’s always done best: take action.
To say you were stunned when Thor kissed you was the understatement of the century. His massive hands dwarfed your face as he softly pressed his lips to yours. An astonished squeak escaped your throat. He pulled away quickly, searching your face for any kind of rejection.
“[Y/N]?”
In moments like these, you were horrendously notorious for putting your foot in your mouth. So, you did the only thing you could think of; you kissed him back. Thor’s eyes widened briefly in surprise before shutting in relief; you wanted him too. Kissing Thor was definitely better the second time around. His lips were impossibly soft against yours. Your fingers found their way into his hair and he nipped your bottom lip in response. Happy Valentine’s Day to you. Much to your disappointment, Thor pulled away again.
“As much as I would greatly enjoy a continuance, there is more to your surprise,” he said breathlessly. Cocking your head to the side, you looked at him in confusion. What more could he have? He pulled a small silver remote from his pocket and pressed a few buttons. The windows were suddenly darkened with black out shades and an illuminated silver screen lowered itself from your ceiling. He pressed more buttons; the faint whirring of a projector echoed softly.   The opening credits of a favourite movie of yours glowed brightly on the screen. Tony had outdone himself!  Clearing away some of the candy, you and Thor got comfortable on your bed. He tucked you into his side and handed you the bowl of popcorn. He really planned it all.
“Is there anything else that’s supposed to appear from the ceiling or did we cover everything?” you asked with a cheesy grin on your face. His responding laughter shook the mattress, dislodging some of the candy.
“That is indeed everything,” he grinned. Satisfied there weren’t any more hidden surprises, you pulled him in for another kiss.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Thor.”
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Princess.”
Y/n narrowed her eyes at the man who sat in the recliner near the bookshelf staring at his book. She knew there was no way that Bucky was reading right now, the strongest point of proof being that he had been staring at that one page for over half an hour. He had been acting weird all day, more weird than his usual self. She had caught him sending her longing glances all day but never approaching. Normally, when he wanted to be with his girl, he would snatch her up and carry her off, but not today. He seemed to be avoiding her like the plague. She watched him in silence for a few more moments before she closed her book with a groan and caught his gaze as he looked up to see what she was doing.
“Ok James, what on Earth is going on with you?”  Y/n asked, shifting her weight on the loveseat so she was now facing him. Bucky raised his eyebrows, fening innocence as he replied,
“Whatcha talkin' ‘bout doll?” His attempt was in vain because she could see right through him.
“Don’t pull this shit with me.” She growled slightly, “You have been acting weird all day! Staring at me with some strange look on your face, what’s that all about, Buck?” She waited for a response but all Bucky did was stare at her, that same look she’d seen all day starting to appear on his face causing her to point and exclaim, “Look! You’re doing it now!”
Bucky blinked once and then sighed, closing his book and placing it on the little table next to his chair before returning his gaze to the woman. He swallowed heavily, opening and closing his mouth a few times before just closing it again. This was enough to switch Y/n’s frustration to concern, causing her to sit up straight.
“Bucky? Baby, what's wrong?” Bucky flinched lightly at her words.
“D-don’t call me that.” He whispered. Her heart rose into her throat, her stomach filling with icy dread.
“Wh-what?” She asked watching as Bucky stood up and began pacing around their small shared living space.
“I don’t know if I can do this anymore!” Bucky cried out, stopping in front of Y/n, a look of utter hopelessness and desperation coloring his features. She felt her throat start to constrict as she tried to speak,
“What are you talking about? Y-you told me just yesterday that my being in your life made you the happiest man alive! Her voice cracked as she whispered, “Was it all a lie?”
Bucky’s eyes widened as he made his way over to kneel in front of her taking her smaller hands inside of his.
“N-no! Not at all I just-” Tears started to stream down his face as he scanned her face looking for something before he started speaking again.
“The mission we went on recently, do you remember that?” She nodded.
“The building was rigged to explode. I-I was waiting for you and you told me to go without you. I told you there was no way in hell I was leaving you there a-and do you remember what you said to me?” Y/n shook her head, brows furrowing together as Bucky’s grip tightened around her hands.
“You said ‘If you really love me, then you'll leave right now. You are of too much value to go out this way. Let me save you this once’." More tears poured down his face as her heart broke. She removed her hands from his tight grip to cup his face, his hands following to keep them there, desperately needing that touch.
“I don’t think you understand what that did to me.” He whispered, watery eyes boring into her own. He takes a deep breath trying to calm himself, his Adam's apple bobbing as silent pleas left his lips with each breath before words finally caught the air escaping his lungs.
“I just can’t let that go.” He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against hers as he spoke softly.
“Baby I'm clutching at straws. For I'm so scared of losing you, and I don't know what I can do about it.” He pulled back a little to look her in the eye as he asked, “So tell me how long, love, before you go and leave me here on my own.”
Y/n took a shaky breath, “It was an intense moment. I was just as terrified of losing you. At that moment I decided that if one of us had to die, it was going to have to be me. You have become so much of my everyday life that if I had the choice, I was going to go first.”
She stroked the stubble decorating his face as she paused to take a breath before continuing.
“However, in this moment, right now, you feel my hands on your face. I’m right here.” She cooed. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Bucky melted in her hands. He dropped his hands off of hers and wound his strong arms around her waist, pulling her into him as he smooshed his face into her stomach, breathing in her scent, further grounding himself.
“I don't wanna know who I am without you.” He whimpered.
Y/n ran her fingers through his soft chestnut locks, “As I see things right now, I don’t think you have to worry about that my love.”
