L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves.

hah, was struggling for this one for a bit, simply on who to choose.

Alfred from Fire Emblem Engage is probably one of my, irrationally, least favorite characters, perhaps in that entire game. I think because he's a standout for Engage's weaknesses: a one-note character whose gimmick outstays its welcome, and while there's an undercurrent of potential with his character it's never actually realized due to the simplicity of the story Engage seeks to tell. He's also a sweet boy that fandom has the tendency to latch on to, while his sister is 100% better, which annoyed me

but this is for positivity!!! anyway, while Engage designs are over the top in this weird, colorful v-tuber way, once I got past that I kind of dig what they've done with him, design-wise. The country he's from is this idyllic spring-time farmland, and I like how that motif caries into the flowers in his outfit as well as the delicacy of the lace. It's over the top, but endearing to have the 'obsessed with muscles' character dressed in this delicate outfit.

R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?

I think the greatest of all time is going to be a lot of platonic relationships in Ace Attorney-- Phoenix and Maya is just about peak when it comes to their friendship and banter throughout the series, and Phoenix and Mia strikes such a unique and mentorship relationship. And the entire Fey clan has just this... terrible web of animosity and power struggle! bad, tense family (and especially sibling) relationships are great, and man does the Fey family do that well.

There's a reason why AA3 works so well as a trilogy ender, and it's because all the Fey relationships are so intertwined and complicated. it's great.

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites

need to get back to work so a speed round for this (with a theme!!! sorry going through my last fandoms I'm like, predictable):

Yunaka, Fire Emblem Engage: Speaking of Engage, Yunaka is fun! Engage character gimmicks are very one-note, but Yunaka is funny to me in the sense that she's putting up a very obvious farce on who she is. She's a character who wants desperately to be something else, and will put on a face to get there, even if that farce cracks quite a bit. it's really fun, even with Engage's storytelling problems

Sanji, One Piece: Sorry to anyone who thought I had taste!!! I like Sanji, unfortunately: he's a mix of a lot of specific brands of angst I enjoy (self-sacrificial moron driven by self-worth issues). on TOP of that, he's abrasive and annoying, not to mention extremely rude-mouthed, he puts up an aggressive front over his own feelings. on top of that, under that exterior, he's a kind person. good mix of things, unfortunately

Eunie, Xenoblade: Eunie is an abrasive loudmouth who doesn't admit her own feelings, even at the end of the game when she will never have the chance again!! she's headstrong and loud and opinionated and it seems like she's the type of person to wear her heart on her sleeve, but softer, vulnerable things she keeps close to her chest.

yea I’m not actually planning on actually translating my thoughts for accessibility I’m just posting according to my own whims so sometimes I’m giving context in eng and sometimes I’m continuing the thought and sometimes I’m sure I’ll have a different thought altogether. sometimes I’m not necessarily even translating from en to cn to en I’m trying to have a thought in cn and then having the thought in eng. or something.

有一点搞笑，写的东西现有…意思多得很。多一点？中文和英文不一样。难写，别的人可能不明白. I have no idea how to actually say it in cn but it’s kinda funny that if I do this I’m not actually translating one to one which means people who know cn get extra info but only if I write it right

I'm blatantly stealing this from @waveridden because I wanted the excuse to talk about some fic that I like. In no particular order:

Rise With The Fall (Persona 5) was my first stab at writing from Akechi's perspective and I had a lot of fun with that. This little guy has so many issues (affectionate). Also, and I know I talk about this constantly, I love any take on the Persona protagonists where they're aware of the limitations placed on them as a result of their role in the narrative. (What can I say, my first Persona game was 3.) The fact that Persona Q has regular dialogue from whichever protagonist you're not playing as haunts me. All of this is to say that Akira may be able to break Maruki's grip on his reality but he can't break mine.

Dazzling Blue Sky on the Window (Persona 3) is maybe a little bit cheating, since I wrote it as a birthday present for myself, but I love Metis, I love Minako, and I want to see what happens when you make the girl who refuses to let anyone see her emotions timeshare her soul with the girl who is literally incapable of suppressing hers. (I think the answer is that they kiss but that's not in the fic itself.)

devil he dragged me down (We Know the Devil) was an experiment in matching style and tone and I'm so pleased with how it came out. The world of the game is simultaneously emotionally specific and light on details, so working in the empty spaces there was a lot of fun.

Related, We Know Exolution (Friends at the Table) is the most ambitious project I've finished in at least five years and I think the final product is totally worth it. It's kind of the opposite of dhdmd in that now I was trying to match the tone and imagery of Twilight Mirage while still keeping the gameplay and theme of WKTD, and also now it's a twine game instead of a visual novel because my art skills are nonexistent. A fun fact is that the cover on itch is a photo I took from the train to my summer internship that was where I first got into fatt. I think it does a decent enough job of conveying the concept of instability masked by a pretty facade that's important to both the inspirations for WKE while also being a fun easter egg for me personally.

every stumble and each misfire (Ace Attorney) is a love letter to Sebastian Debeste and I have reread it multiple times in the last week. (I may be replaying AAI2.) I love when characters have to realize how bad things are in stages, and there is so much for Sebastian to unpack at the end of that game. I am definitely coming back to this topic but for now we have this and it's good.

To expand a bit on what I said in that post, I may be incorrect to assume writing out a "what if all the shoguns were secretly women" fantasy inherently implies any feminist desires on the part of the author just because she's won some feminist sci-fi awards-- in particular, that perhaps Yoshinaga merely wanted a fun historical drama plot-- but that it's hard to get away from that "Yoshinaga is trying to be feminist" feeling when the manga so consistently returns to the ways the female shoguns face and try to overcome misogyny (while not paying so much attention to what it's like to be ruled by them).

Superhero fandom of your choice: “I’ve got you.”

Miles jammed on his web shooter. Whether he was out or it was just jammed he couldn’t tell. It was hard to tell much of anything when you were falling down from the top of the GW bridge. 

He looked down at the approaching water below. From this height it might as well be cement. He was gonna splat like a real spider. Ugh, and in the Hudson. Gross. 

He felt something attach to his back leg, and his descent started to slow, gently. Just as he stopped, he was able to bounce back up, just a little, aimlessly swinging there. 

He looked up, a difficult feat when you were hanging upside down. But he recognized the voice at least. “I got you!” His dad called down to him. “Just hang tight, I got you.”

As he started being pulled up, he was able to get a better picture. His dad stood at the side of the bridge, heedless of the traffic passing him. Mrs. Parker (Right, May, she insisted on being called May) beside him, holding his replacement web shooter, that was currently keeping him from falling any further. 

His dad pulled on the web like a rope, reeling him in. As he reached the top, he saw from behind, Dr. Octopus approaching, her arm reaching out to push his Dad off too. “DAD! LOOK OUT!” Miles said without looking.

Miles swung on the web, using it as leverage to jump in the way of the extended arm, intercepting it and holding it back. “I got you!” Miles said, holding her back, “Run!”

May grabbed his Dad’s hand and took for cover, letting Miles fight his own battles.

“Uh....” Miles said, swallowing and assuming his Low Voice, “No, no, I said...Bad. Because the arms were coming for you. And it was. Bad.”

He frowned, clearly not believing him, but left it.

idk about underrated, but I put a ridiculous amount of effort into Heaven’s Over Us and it got barely 200 hits. The people who have read it seem to like it, though.

I also wish more people would read What Do You Want To Hear? if only because it’s very personal to me and I thought very carefully about how I wanted to say what I said in it.

While there is no way it was intentional, I like to think it reflects the fact that they both gave up even more of their agency than is standard for Candidates in the desperate hopes of saving a doomed people, and it’s both ironic and honorific at the same time

Ohh I see. I agree with you. However, it would be really cool if the anime staff would have taken risks. I mean, there isn't a lot of anime who changes protagonist/POV every two /three chapters. They could had done that. And just like other anime, try to translate those insights into newer scenes, to show how they are /feel. But well, despite anime's weird time skips, I am liking it. I really loved episode four, it was quite a road! YuniChika had more time to talk about banal and important stuff. I guess the rest is hoing to be more like that. And more than the romantic ships, the way Chika is with Oda is so refreshing, and Oda with Okuma is so funny. The show has great relationships to work with, I am looking forward watching them progress. Also, I am loving all the nuances of Chika's personality.

thoughts on 2.43 ep 4

the episode went by quick! wish we got more team bonding during the training camp, but i get that they had to get through the whole chapter in one episode. the YuniChika heart to heart conversation was cute! 

that said, i uh vastly prefer how the incident at the end of the episode was revealed in the book. 

in the book the whole incident only got clarified at the end of Ch 5, and i really liked how not knowing what happened with Yuni puts us in the perspective of Chika and the other team members

however, in an anime 1) being told after the fact would’ve been boring to watch, and 2) they have to squeeze the upcoming chapter into A SINGLE EPISODE, so showing us what went down is just quicker

unfortunately, this makes the misunderstanding that happens between Yuni and the team WAY MORE annoying imo

I also know a word that’s impossible for me to look up because no one uses it in casual conversation and I learned it because someone showed me a hong kong (?) action movie where a gangster went undercover as a cop and a cop went undercover as a gangster.
