Day 2: Alternative Universe - Rewrite - Battle of the Bands

@kurapikawithagun - sorry, i know there’s a lot of text here. but was it one of these?
on second thought, post is way too long, so i edited this with a “keep reading” section. includes excerpts about how “plant collectors followed the Conquistadors”; Spanish and British botanists wanted to “de-territorialize” or “de-anthropologize” knowledge of plants by removing plants from local cultural context, gatekeeping and systematizing knowledge, and subverting local Indigenous/traditional knowledge-holders; creation of Britain’s first botanic gardens including world-famous Kew Gardens were designed to service plantation owners and the East India Company; how 18th/19th-century European naturalists were “agents of empire” who collected “green gold”; how plantations and imperial botanists turned plants from “companions into commodities” and established racial hierarchy; early science of botany functioned as a “teletechnique,” a way for an empire to “act-at-a-distance” on and against colonized lands and peoples; how British military commanders and economists ran the botanic gardens at Calcutta, Madras, and in the Caribbean; how British administrators dismantled local Indian knowledge and land systems by using key legislation in the 1780s/1790s to dispossess people of their lands before compelling those former gardeners to become forced laborers on tea plantations; gardens as part of American nationalist imaginary and “moral improvement” in the 1800s; how native plants and traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples, Black communities, and the rural poor have been appropriated by “overwhelmingly white metropolitan homeowners” looking for “ecologically friendly ways of aesthetising their properties” in fads of contemporary South Africa; how imperial botany created a “monoculture of knowledge” to overshadow or control a multitude of other local “ecologies of knowledges” and ways-of-knowing; etc.
-------
In a 1998 interview [...], in advance of the release of her third novel, Gardens in the Dunes (1999), Leslie Marmon Silko explains how she became interested in plants: “They come from all over the world, and they’re also another way of looking at colonialism because everywhere the colonials went, the plants came back from there.” [...] Silko confesses that “it wasn’t too long before I realized how very political gardens are …. I had actually stumbled into the most political thing of all – how you grow your food, whether you eat, the fact that the plant collectors followed the Conquistadors.” [...] Gardens revolves around the colonization of indigenous minds and bodies through a variety of processes under the flag of manifest destiny: the loss of land and natural resources in general and the disruption of Native foodways in particular. […] Moreover, it problematizes the privatization of food commons and its negative impacts on local communities from the Gilded Age to the present. […] Silko, a writer of Laguna Pueblo, Mexican, and Anglo-American ancestry, employs the trope of the garden as a means of critiquing and revising modern America’s ecological imperialism, which has attempted to naturalize the conquest of Native lands and foodways. […]
Plant collectors served as what David Mackay calls “agents of empire,” their inventories full of precious and at the time unknown plants and medicinal herbs collected from indigenous peoples that they then shipped to various libraries, museums, and botanic gardens in the Western world. According to historian of science Linda Schiebinger, while “early conquistadors entered the Americas looking for gold and silver,” naturalists, their successors in the eighteenth century, were more interested in “green gold.” Whether they were “voyaging botanists” sponsored by trading companies or sent by the government, the central task of these botanists was to bring valuable plants “all into production within the boundaries of the empire itself.” […] [T]he trope of “I am monarch of all I survey” […]. The power relations between “seeing” and “being seen” suggest that Western science aids the conquest of the Americas by positing a distance between the colonizer and the colonized. […] Collecting, whether via bioprospecting or photography, thus exemplifies the colonial ideology inscribed in Western science that transforms Indigenous peoples and their traditional knowledge into possessable objects and buttresses the structural inequalities that cement the colonizer’s privilege. In her provocative essay on mushrooms as companion species, Anna Tsing has convincingly argued that the plantation system served as “the engine of European expansion” because it was able to produce enormous wealth based on “the superabundance of a single crop” and “cultivation through coercion.” To manage many plantations in colonies more effectively, Europeans eliminated the affective relationship between humans and plants: the labor needed for plantation cultivation was forced through slavery and indentured servitude, a racial hierarchy was created to draw a clear line between white property owner and colored worker, and plants were treated as commodities rather than companions. The legacy of the plantation system, as Tsing puts it, lies in the ways it has shaped the conditions of racial capitalism and environmental exploitation and in the ways it continues to structure “how contemporary agribusiness is organized. […] Commenting on the interrelationship of imperial botany and commerce during the colonial period, Schiebinger explains that “the botanical sciences served the colonial enterprise and were, in turn, structured by it.” Silko’s novel, then, shows how botanical gardens in Europe functioned, in Schiebinger’s language, as “experimental stations for agriculture and way stations for plant acclimatization for domestic and global trade, rare medicaments, and cash crops” against the common view that gardens like the Kew were centrally “intended to delight city dwellers.”

-------
After numerous false starts, and with the crucial aid of the practical embodied knowledge of the many Chinese gardeners who were literally kidnapped to India together with the tea plants, the Calcutta Botanic Garden and the pre-colonial Saharanpur Garden that was re-developed by the colonial administration, played pivotal roles in the emergence of colonial India as the major producer of tea. The practical knowledge possessed by the initial group of abducted Chinese gardeners eventually fed into incipient botany in the colonial setting. The tea plants transplanted from China to the botanic gardens in India were eventually transplanted to the massive rationalised tea plantations in Assam and parts of South India such as Ooty and the Nilgiris (Sharma 2011; Philip 2004). The lands for these plantations were acquired after the large-scale dispossession of the populations of Assam and Ooty, and the relocation and deployment of the people alienated from their lands as forced labour on the very lands they once possessed and cultivated. The setting up of the colonial botanic gardens, spurred by the crises generated by colonialism, also set in motion multiple transfers and transplants, local and global, of plants, people, culture, agriculture and the eventual transformation of practical knowledge into formal botanical science devoted to [...] production [...] and productivity [...]. These experiments conducted at the Calcutta Botanical Garden also provided institutional and intellectual opportunities for botanical careers for many colonial officials.

-------
In this conception operating in the eighteenth century, there is no Nature without Empire. […] To “de-anthropologize” the knowledge of plants, also involved “de-locating,” or better still, “de-territorializing” it. Botany was emerging as a science separate from medicine, but also from chorography as territory became a vegetal mantle, a sort of carpet for plants to lie upon. […] Botanical nomenclature was also a matter of political nomenklatura: the exclusion of native names from the field of science defined new power relations. It acknowledged the authority of imperial botanists and belittled local herbalists and herbal practitioners. Nomenclature, indeed, displaced traditional wisdom: Nahuatl came to be considered as an unintelligible, garbled language [...]. This spatial strategy tends to identify certain regions with some characteristic species. This allowed a selective fostering of farms and forestry in those areas rich in species of particular interest to the Spanish Crown. Plants ceased to be the business of experts and became the concern of politicians. Botany came to strengthen imperial politics. [...] The plants themselves and not their products became the stuff of trade, and what circulated through the networks were ideas on how to mobilize species and how to denature  them. Botany began as atechnoscope – a way to visualize at-a-distance – but, at the end of the eighteenth century, it was already a  teletechnique – a way to act at-a-distance. Its success as an imperial undertaking was linked to the ability to set up an international network of professorships, gardens, expeditions and publishing companies able to produce aversion of Nature easily put into words, and deducible from very little data. “’These are my conquests,” Josephine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, is reported to have said of the roses and lilies in her renowned garden showcase,” Bennett writes. […] “She would spend as much as 3000 francs on a single rare bulb […].” Gardens are “the most political thing of all – how you grow your food, whether you ear, the fact that the plant collectors followed the Conquistadors,” Leslie Marmon Silko told Ellen Arnold on the eve of the publication of Gardens in the Dunes [1999]. “You have the Conquistadors, the missionaries, and right with them were the plant collectors.” […] In Gardens, Silko uses the image of the garden to illustrate imperialism on international, national, local, and domestic levels. […] Silko offers a microcosmic history of ancient conquest, European imperialism, and modern botanical piracy, while demonstrating commercial trivialization of the sacred. […] The gardens […] exemplify America’s nineteenth-century gardening ideologies. In his 1782 Letters from an American Farmer, Hector St. John de Crevecoeur wrote of the spiritual benefits of agricultural labor. By the mid-nineteenth century, this idea had evolved into gardening as a form of moral calisthenics. […] According to historian Tamara Plakins Thornton, in the 1820s “[h]orticulture entered the mainstream of American life … as a movement [that] promised … moral benefits to an entire nation.” […] Further, by the 1890s, thanks to the early-nineteenth-century efforts of America’s premier landscape gardener, A.J. Downing, and, later, British gardening authority Gertrude Jekyll, landscape gardening had achieved the status of a fine art (Thornton; Bisgrove). It was in 1893 that historian Frederick Jackson Turner announced that the American frontier was “closed.” With […] Native peoples more or less incarcerated [...], the American landscape garden provided a blank canvas on which the gardener could impose control and exercise her fine art […].

-------
Many colonial administrators were of course active in mobilising the   tremendous economic potential of plants in the imperial project. At the same time however, there were many others who, although they were key actors in the colonial project, were also specifically interested in enhancing their cultural and intellectual capital by becoming “scientists.” [...] The British Empire, as well as the other European empires of that period, constituted one of the many institutional crucibles in which the sciences of plants literally germinated, took root and flowered. Plants constituted an integral element of colonial power [...]. This goal of setting up a rationalised system of administration and revenue collection was a major impetus behind the “great surveys” initiated by the East India Company. [...] The company officials were also familiar with the existence of a pre-colonial Botanical Garden in Saharanpur in northern India (Hyde 1962) and of course Kew Gardens in London, even though the latter was set up primarily for the cultivation of medicinal plants and had not as yet emerged as the major scientific institution that it would become later. The company had also set up smaller gardens in St Vincent in the West Indies for the transfer of the breadfruit tree from Tahiti to provide, in the words of the President of the Royal Society, Joseph Banks, “food for slaves” (Mackay 1985, 127). In the context of a dramatically transformed Indian social structure coupled with serious concerns over the erosion of the legitimacy of their rule in the eyes of their Indian subjects, officials of the company were extremely receptive to the idea of a major botanical garden and its potential for restoring stable revenues. […] In less than four years after Kyd’s original letter of 1786, generous grants from the Court of Directors in London made possible the establishment of the first modern Botanical Gardens in Calcutta, Madras and Bombay, as well as in distant St Helena. […] Unsurprisingly, the first superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic Gardens was Lieutenant-Colonel Kyd himself and the plants that were transplanted there from Southeast Asia were exclusively those that were essential for trade and competition with other colonial powers (Burkill 1959). These included cinnamon, coffee and black pepper. [...] In the same vein, the Bombay Botanic Garden was established due to the initiative of Dr Helenus Scott – a friend of Banks, President of the Royal Society – with the express aim of conducting botanical experiments for the cultivation of sugar, indigo, tobacco, coffee and more.

Imifino is the collective noun isiZulu speakers in KwaZulu-Natal use when referring to auto-propagating leafy green vegetables that have a penchant for thriving in marginal soil. As interest in indigenous plants has grown, these vegetables – long an unheralded staple of the rural poor – are now at the centre of state and scientific attention. Plans are afoot to codify, patent, and popularise ‘indigenous knowledges’ for a variety of ends: the enhancement of national competitiveness; revalorisation of indigeneity; pursuit of food security; and of course the stimulation of profit-making. […] Subsistence cultivators, however, are not alone in cultivating indigenous flora. About three hours south, in the city of Durban (and throughout South Africa) something called ‘indigenous gardening’ has gained popularity since the end of formal apartheid. As we elaborate later, ‘indigenous gardening’ is a name reserved for a specialised field of activity, a metropolitan affair practised by conservationists, botanists, real estate developers, horticulturalists, architects, and enjoyed by mostly white upper class homeowners for a variety of purposes, especially those associated with conservation. It is sanctioned by science and other kinds of credentialed expertise, and geared towards enabling overwhelmingly white metropolitan home owners to pursue ecologically friendly ways of aesthetising their properties, rather than towards matters of subsistence undertaken by those deemed the black rural poor. From the vantage point of our conversations with subsistence cultivators like Gogo Qho, we wonder, ‘Why do overwhelmingly white metropolitan homeowners specifically want indigenous plants to adorn their properties? What kind of desire for indigeneity is being pursued here? What is Indigenous about Indigenous gardening other than plants?’ […]

-------
Landscapes and vegetation are not simply the backdrop against which violence and dispossession unfold, but are mobilised as the very medium of violence [...]. Key here is the space of the garden, in multiple ways. Gardens in the Western imagination often have utopian, pre-lapsarian associations, but are in fact riven with ambivalences that stem from questions concerning who is displaced in order to demarcate their boundaries, and whose labour is exploited to maintain them as sites of nourishment and enjoyment. [...] As such, the colonised subjects remain cast out of the [...] garden of earthly delights, even if its is precisely through their knowledge and labour that the actual garden feeds and sustains the symbolic garden -- notably, the plantation system [...]. In the context of imperial botany the space of the garden was vital, with the frontrunners of the modern scientific botanic garden, which were established in sixteenth-century Italy, combining ‘the scientific ideal of comprehending universal nature’ [...] ‘by gathering together all the creations scattered at the fall of man.’ As such, the botanical garden can be understood as a laboratory of empire, as can tropical island colonies (also incubators for the revival of European Edenic dis/course) and the space of the plantation more broadly. Moreover, the construction of the category of the ‘damnes’ of the earth needs to be read in the context of this wholesale classification of forms of life enacted by imperial science. Notable botanists such as Linnaeus, as well as Hans Sloane and Joseph Banks, were influential in the development of scientific racism, as well as the endorsement of slavery and colonisation of foreign territories. Colonial natural science [...] was central in the construction of race and sexuality [...]. By and large, imperial science (what we might call a ‘monoculture of knowledge’) excluded other, ‘minor’ histories and systems of knowledge (’ecologies of knowledges’), as well as modes of being-in-the-world that are not premised upon the value, profitability and usefulness of plants [...].

Full Name — Rodrigo-Luís Aguilar

Favorite drink — Rum
Favorite flower — Turk’s Cap Lily
Birthday — April 1st
Age — 35
Height — 5′11″
Gender — Male
Romantic/Sexual orientation — Queer
Zodiac — Aries Sun, Scorpio Moon, Leo Rising
Patron Arcana — King of Pentacles
Upright: The King of Pentacles knows that the finest things in life aren't free - he also knows he can afford them.
Reversed: The King of Pentacles feels empty inside, having let his materialism consume all other aspects of his life.
Appearance —
Warm brown skin, tans extremely easily
Freckles across his cheeks and nose
Dark brown, curly hair (like 3A type curls), usually kept short, never goes past his chin
Very dark brown eyes, almost black
Almost always has the remnants of mascara or kohl around his eyes
Eyebrows are dark and thick, but well maintained
Right eyebrow is split by a scar
Roman nose shape with a definite point
Stud nose piercing on his left nostril
Has hair on his chin, bigger than a soul patch, but not quite a whole goatee
Lips are on the thinner side (but not like “white-thin,” you know)
Lean body type, but solid, his strength is focused in his legs (which are very long)
Scars all over his body, mostly on his back and shoulders, but there are some on his chest and stomach
Very faded brand in the middle of his back, hard to tell what it is anymore as it’s crossed with other scars and freckles
Languages spoken — Nopali, Vesuvian (the common tongue), he can understand a little bit of Zadithi, but not enough to have a conversation, he also speaks the common tongue with a very heavy Nopali accent that he clings to
Hobbies —
One of his biggest hobbies is collecting rare weapons—whenever he raids a ship he will always look for unique swords, daggers, what have you, and he keeps them all in his quarters. He isn’t collecting them based on their value, though some of them may be extremely valuable, he just thinks they look nice (archaeologists and museum curators everywhere Hate him)
Another hobby of his is dance, specifically samba, and it lends itself to his footwork while fighting, immensely. He was never professionally trained, and doesn’t really do it much outside of his ship, but his mother Carina was an instructor and he watched her teach for 10 years
Surprisingly good at whittling, and after he shaved off a part of his desk out of boredom, Jacqui started finding pieces of driftwood to give him instead, and occasionally Rodrigo will pull one out and just absentmindedly carve
Magical abilities —
Rodrigo’s magic is very strong, but very volatile, and he doesn’t fully understand it
What he does understand typically falls under Illusionary/Glamor Magic
He normally uses this to create a mirror image of himself, or to disorient opponents when fighting—the mirror image is really just an afterimage, if he wanted it to move and fight with him, he could, but that takes more energy than he wants to use for just a quick diversion
He can also cast glamors over his appearance, allowing him to sneak into underground bars and similarly shady places unseen/unnoticed—helpful especially when your face is on more than a few wanted posters in such shady places
Will cast illusions over others, especially during raids to confuse the ship their raiding by making them think there are more pirates than there are, or tricking them into jumping off their own ship
He can create illusions for others too, for example, create a mirror image of Jacqui during a fight, though it takes more concentration and he can’t maintain it for as long
It’s easier for him to cast massive illusions over non-humans, like the sirens in the Strait of Sirens, and he can make better use of his range that way, but it still isn’t something he can maintain for more than a few minutes at the most
Most of his illusions rely on people being able to see, so they don’t work over blind people (like Leon) or in the dark of night
He can also create barriers, force-fields, that he will use to protect his ship during raids
He can use this on a more individual level, but for some reason, when that magic is more concentrated, it is harder to control
Love Interests —
Jacqui, technically. It’s complicated.
They’re both very dependent on the other, and it’s by no means a healthy relationship, but they both fall back together at the end of the day, and that’s what matters to them the most
If either of them were asked to name someone they loved, they would each be the other’s first thought, but neither would admit to that out loud
Kind of Jade, though they have more of a strictly friends-with-benefits sort of relationship, there aren’t any underlying feelings further than that
Has had a few flings with Leon, but nothing too serious
He is of course open to being shipped with other people’s OCs (see @/lucigucci‘s Martzel) just ship at your own risk, he’s not into committed relationships in the slightest
Background and More Art under the cut!
Background —
Rodrigo was born in a small Nopali village to Elena-Carmen Fernandez and Carina-Sofia Aguilar. Elena was the town’s leader and she was very beloved, which meant her wife Carina, and their son, Rodrigo, were very well known and cared for. Rodrigo was basically the village’s golden child, and he wasn’t always a little shit, so the attention was (mostly) well deserved.
However, unknown to Rodrigo and most of the village, Elena was hiding something from the Original Scholars at the Sea Palace. When Rodrigo was 10, Captain Sydney was sent by the Scholars, (Drago Fortunado D’Oria specifically) to retrieve what she was hiding, but she died protecting the village, and the thing she was protecting was never explained to the rest of the village before Sydney’s crew attacked them.
Only Carina knew what Elena had died protecting—Rodrigo. His magic was fast developing, stronger than either of them expected, and Elena knew that it was only a matter of time before Drago knew of his existence through his connections to the world’s magic, and before he would come to take her son away. For years she had kept a barrier over their village, shielding his existence, but someone in the village betrayed them and word got to Drago about the magic there. So, he sent Syd to find the source of the magic and take it back to him.
Elena fought Syd, still using her own magic to protect the village, but when Syd killed her, her magic disappeared, leaving the village vulnerable. He and his crew raided the village, and Rodrigo was captured and taken to the Sea Palace’s catacombs, to Drago to study.
Carina was able to escape and fled to Venterre, where she eventually met and married Rosabella Zita D’Oria, and they have a daughter together, Tatiana Eufemia D’Oria, Rodrigo’s half-sister. Carina thinks that her son is long dead, as she saw him being taken away by Syd and his crew, and as far as she knew, there was no reason to go after him, as anyone taken by force to the Palace is to be considered dead. Rodrigo doesn’t know she’s still alive, but he thinks she’s better off dead, as in his eyes, it looked like she let him be taken and didn’t try to save him.
From when he was 10 to when he was 16, Rodrigo lived in the catacombs under the Sea Palace, and he was treated as a test subject for Drago’s research. He spent those six years fighting back, and his magic was heavily tampered with. He’s convinced that the Scholars stole/locked a part of it away that he’ll never get back. It wasn’t until Jacqui (then 19) stumbled upon him in the catacombs that he was set free, and the two of them ran away.
They ran from the Sea Palace for a few years, dodging bounty hunters sent by the Scholars all around the Sea of Persephia until Rodrigo (18) won his ship, El Corazon Sangrante in a bet—which he cheated to win. He named himself Captain, and he and Jacqui began to build a crew.
A few years later, Rodrigo, then 20, met the band as they were on their way to the Sea Palace, and got into a fight with then 14 year old Alec, giving him the scar on his face and a life-long grudge against her, which she returns wholeheartedly.
Around this time, roughly (still ironing out the timeline), Rodrigo raided a ship that, among other things and people, was carrying one Doctor Julian Devorak, who helped treat him as he was injured during the raid. As such, Rodrigo spared Julian, and he traveled with Rodrigo and his crew for a few months, though the two did not like each other very much (especially after Rodrigo started noticing Julian spending more time with Jacqui than he felt necessary).
By the time he was 25, Rodrigo had attended his first Pirate Meeting in Ethari, run by Meredith, where he was introduced to the Code. He almost got thrown out of the meeting for running his mouth at the Queen, but Jacqui saved him (as is how Rodrigo gets out of most things). His crew was well-established, a group of ex-bounty hunters, wanted criminals (usually only for minor thefts and disturbances), and the crew’s cook, a little old Nopali woman named Paulina.
He and his crew have spent the past 10 years sailing (terrorizing) the Sea of Persephia, and don’t plan on stopping any time soon. In the game timeline, they are still sailing, though post all routes, El Corazon heads South for another Pirate Meeting.

20 Questions: Writer’s Edition!
Thanks so much for the tag, @blitheringmcgonagall and @the-dream-team! 💙💙💙 I was really hoping to get to do this one lol
***
How many works do you have on AO3
300 (though I’ve yet to post 8 fics from my backlog there)
What’s your total AO3 word count?
1 281 330
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Three. SessKag (Inuyasha), Jily (Harry Potter) and IchiRuki (Bleach)
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
If I did the REAL top 5 fics by Kudos it would be all SessKag and my answers overall are very SessKag heavy as is so I went with top 2 SessKag, top 2 Jily and top 1 IchiRuki instead.
1. Life After Loss
This was not the happily ever after Kagome had always dreamt about. This could not be happening to her, not after everything they had gone through... She never knew that her whole world could screech to a complete halt in a blink of an eye.
SessKag, M, Chapter Fic, 98k words
2. Stranger Than Fiction
The books have been all the craze recently, boasting an epic adventure set in the chaos of Sengoku Jidai. Kagome has steered clear from them; she has spent quite enough time dwelling in the past as is. However, when her roommate and a die-hard fan  of the book series laments the latest plot twist, Kagome realises that the accursed books might be hitting even closer to home than she ever suspected.
SessKag, T, One Shot, 913 words
3. #Jily
Twitter seemed awash with the hashtag Jily. Lily blinked at in confusion, until she realised it was one of those silly couple monikers people had  bestowed on her and Potter. …Though there was a small dissenting crowd following a tweet from Potter’s bandmate Sirius Black: Jily? Hah! More like LAMES.
Jily, G, One Shot, 2,991 words
4. Much Tweeting About Crushing
James has a hopeless crush on his neighbour and tweets about it, which is fine. Until Evans follows him.
Jily, T, One Shot, 3,050 words
5. Miscalculation
Rukia planted her elbows on the table and steepled her fingers. “I want my brother to think we’re dating so I can get him off my back.” Ichigo scoffed at her. “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.”
IchiRuki, T, Two Shot, 1,820 words
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes and no? 😅 For a long time I had a policy that I’d reply to comments if I had something more to say than just “thanks”.
Nowadays I reply to nearly every comment I get on AO3. I feel if the people bother to take the time to comment, the least I can do is thank them and I’ve made some friends in the comment section along the years too. But all that said... since I went on my hiatus I haven’t really been replying to my comments on Dokuga much, the clunky reply system there makes it feel like a big hassle which makes it feel draining. 😅
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Hmm, Probably either Foil (SK) or Vagary (SK)?
... And I just realised Vagary is another one I never posted on AO3 argh when will the backlog end???
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Probably Life After Loss, all things considered. 💙
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
I’ve never written proper crossover, i.e. characters from different series interacting but I’ve written crossover fusions i.e. charas from series 1 in the setting of series 2, such as Disney AUs etc.
The craziest one would be probably the SessKag Star Wars AU because I’m not a Star Wars fan and know very little of it but it was requested so... 🙈
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
I got Anon hate at one point from an anti-shipper on my IchiRuki fic on FFnet, it was wild. 🤣
And maybe not as far as hate but the notorious plot twist on Chain of Love (SK) was very much criticised to the point where even years later when I got a comment notification for Chain I would inwardly flinch. 😅
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I don’t.
I have written and will write a sex scene if the story requires it (most recently in Do I Remind You Of Somewhere You Wanna Be, SK). But they are never explicit in nature, I’m not naming genitals or anything lol. The thing is, if I have to write sex I want to keep it... tasteful, for the lack of a better word. So a term like smut, with connotation to dirtiness would never apply to my writing.
(Back in the day, because I don’t write explicit scenes I did not consider my sex scenes “lemons” either. Which is why I’m still cackling about the fact that Chain once won the 1st place award for a best lemon scene.)
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yes, I have. Chain was posted on Wattpad without my knowledge or permission. It is wild having to file a DMCA over a fanfic. 😂
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! Some of my SessKag one shots have been translated to Spanish, I believe!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I’ve tried, with a close IRL friend of mine, but as our attempts never got very far I wouldn’t say I really have. 😅
What’s your all time favorite ship?
Oof, that’s a tough one. Maybe IchiRuki?
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Probably the Bodyguard AU (JL) and the Shotgun AU (JL)? I love both of these stories a lot but I’m very much in the beginning with them and both are ideas I’ve had for years yet have never really been able to actively work on?
What are your writing strengths?
Hmm. I feel my writing style leans towards short and simple so it’s easily approachable? I think I’m pretty good with dialogue. Sometimes, I can do a lot with very few words. And I think I’m fairly good at slipping in little details or giving a sense of backstory, even if it’s a short one shot?
What are your writing weaknesses?
I suffer from a perpetual lack of motivation that I try to combat with having a writing routine. I’m slow to update because unless I’m inspired which never happens or am on a deadline crunch I am perfectly comfortable just adding 300-500 words to my WIP and calling it a day. I loathe editing so I rarely do much else than a cursory proofread before posting.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
My initial thought is why? 😂 I mean I guess I don’t mind but I feel using another language in the fic should be justified and done in moderation. Personally, I probably wouldn’t write dialogue in another language.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Okay so the first fic I ever actually wrote/published was a 2nd gen arranged marriage fic for The Belgariad and The Malloreon, my favourite book series growing up. The fic, which fizzled out after 2 or so chapters, was deleted years ago lol
SessKag came second. 😉
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
*vaguely gestures at the 300+ fics* It’s pretty much impossible to choose among my children but if you put a gun to my head I’ll say Life After Loss.

Darling Lili in New York, or Where Were You the Night Julie Andrews Played Radio City Music Hall and Stole Manhattan’s Heart?
This is the second in a series of commemorative posts to mark the 50th anniversary of Darling Lili, the last of the 1960s Julie Andrews screen musicals. In the preceding post, we looked at the film’s fraught production history up to and including its World Premiere at Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome on 23 June 1970. Here, we turn attention to the film’s New York bow which took place a month later on 23 July at the city’s fabled Radio City Music Hall.
Nicknamed “the show place of the nation”, Radio City Music Hall was for much of the mid-twentieth century the venue of choice for big event film releases. The theatre’s monumental size, architectural opulence, state-of-the-art technology, and pre-show stage spectacles made it “the quintessential motion picture palace,” and Hollywood studios jockeyed to secure bookings at “the Hall” for their most prestigious pictures (Goldman, 97-98).
During the late-60s, Paramount, the studio behind Darling Lili, enjoyed a run of extremely successful summer bookings at Radio City Music Hall. Its 1967 release, Barefoot in the Park broke house records for the longest run at the Hall with a 12-week season, only to be bested the following year by another Paramount comedy, The Odd Couple which ran for 14-weeks (”Trouble”, 114). It was something of a PR coup, therefore, when, in January 1970, Paramount announced with much fanfare that Darling Lili would make its official premiere as the summer attraction at Radio City Music Hall later in the year (”Par Gets”, 3). The deal even made the front cover of Boxoffice magazine with a photo of Frank Yablans, Paramount general sales manager, proudly signing the booking contract with Music Hall president, James F. Gould (″Sign of Summer,”, cover).
Barely had the ink dried on the deal, however, when Paramount changed tack. Hit by the toughest industry recession in decades and spooked by a precipitous downturn in the market for big-budget roadshow films, Paramount execs implemented a wholesale revision of studio operations, including a brutal hard-prune of their production and release schedules (Dick, 120ff). By April, earlier plans to give Darling Lili a high profile release had been ditched and, in its stead, Paramount decided to offload the film cheaply as part of a bundle of eight titles slated for saturation release during the summer off-season. Dubbed the “Big Summer Playoff,” the aim was to issue the films widely and quickly so that they could “saturate every major and minor market with single-house firstruns and key city multiples” (“Paramount’s Summer Playoff”, 5). In an era when important films were typically given carefully staggered roll-outs, it was an unorthodox move that fuelled advance perceptions of Darling Lili as a bomb of such magnitude that even its own studio had lost hope. As one newspaper commentator put it, Paramount “seems to have dumped the expensive movie rather than spend any more on it” (Taylor, 21-E).
Radio City Music Hall, by contrast, stuck to its original plans to exhibit Darling Lili as a high-profile summer spectacular. With Paramount having started to issue the film haphazardly to theatres across the nation in June, the opening of Darling Lili at Radio City on July 23 would no longer be a world premiere -- that honour was hastily devolved to Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome  -- but the Hall persisted in proudly billing its run as “the New York premiere”. As Variety wryly noted: “Music Hall has never played a pic which hasn’t been a New York first, although perhaps someone there thought the tourists may have thought Lili was otherwise in that the film opened nationally a month ago” (”New York”, 20).
While not strictly a roadshow presentation, Radio City Music Hall exhibited  Darling Lili with all the trappings of a hardticket prestige release. Seats were available via a mix of both premium reserved and general admission with special complimentary programs issued to patrons at all sessions. The theatre screened the film in wide-gauge 70mm with 6-track stereophonic sound, one of only two US venues to do so. Projected on the Hall’s 70′x40′ motion picture screen -- the largest indoor screen in the world at the time -- the film would have looked and sounded amazing (Goldman, 99). As an added point of appeal, screenings were supported by one of the Hall‘s famous live stage entertainments: in this case, a Spanish-themed spectacular with symphony orchestra, flamenco dancers, guitarists and, of course, the legendary high-kicking Rockettes (Jose, 54). In addition, the Hall lavished Darling Lili with a solid promotional buildup, taking out full page ads in key newspapers, and using strategically-placed billboards and transit ads around town.
It was an old-school approach of event-style cinema showmanship that paid off handsomely. Even before Darling Lili opened at the Hall, there was “an unprecedented advance demand” for tickets, leading the theatre to double the number of reserved seats from 900 to 1,800 for all sessions. “We’ve added reserve seats on a few occasions previously,” observed a theatre rep, but “only during the heavily crowded Christmas and Easter holiday seasons” and never...during the summer,” adding that he had “no idea” what had generated the extraordinary advance demand (Weiler, 37).
The good news continued when the film opened on July 23 with a box-office rush that broke all house records, prompting the theatre to increase reserve bookings even further to 2500 seats in an effort to accommodate the clamour for tickets (“’Lili’ Hitting Peak,” E-2). As Variety commented:
“Radio City’s Darling Lili...is the summer blockbuster all the auspices hoped it would be, with $285,000 or close expected for kickoff session. Pic is curious in that its longtime postproduction shelving had spurred rumors of disastrous artistic results. But film has shown legs in crosscountry openings and both critical and word-of-mouth opinion in Manhattan has been mixed at worst. Some response is downright enthusiastic” (“’Lili’ and Revue,” 9).
Darling Lili continued its bullish box-office run in New York, long after any initial novelty buzz should have subsided. Weekly grosses inched higher for a few weeks before settling into a very healthy $200K+ per week plateau. Come mid-August, Variety noted with thinly-veiled surprise that:
“Radio City Music Hall is experiencing a slight phenomenon with its current Darling Lili attraction. It’s not unusual during the summer tourist season for popular Hall programs to maintain or build grosses...but few remain in such a narrow range as has Lili to date. First week tally of $280,000 was a non-holiday record. Second was upped to $288,000. Now third session is headed for $280,000....70mm projection and sound are plus-values in a package which Hall president James Gould predicts will run until late September” (“N.Y. Full,” 9).
In the end Darling Lili did run at Radio City Music Hall until late-September -- September 23, to be precise -- when it closed to make way for the pre-booked Sophia Loren-vehicle, Sunflower. Across its 9-week run, the film grossed in excess of $2million in ticket sales, making it one of the theatre’s biggest summer hits to date (“Picture Grosses,” 15).
The commercial success of Darling Lili at the Hall was music to the ears of the film’s star who, in a rare moment of unguarded hubris, admitted to a measure of self-satisfaction at news of the booming box office receipts:
“‘I’m not so interested for myself,’ she explained, ‘but I’m happy for Blake. He has been so maligned about this picture that I am delighted he is receiving some vindication...I think he managed to make a vastly enjoyable film...People are entertained by it; the Music Hall figures seem to prove that.’ [T]he actress had mild reproof for the releasing company, Paramount, over its handling of the film: ‘Three weeks before the opening, there was no advertising campaign. None whatsoever. Paramount didn’t seem to know how it was going to sell the picture--or if. I simply can’t understand an attitude like that’” (Thomas: 13).
Julie’s chiding of Paramount for its poor handling of Darling Lili was not mere sour grapes. Once the studio had decided to issue the film as part of a summer saturation bundle, it effectively abandoned any semblance of cogent or even halfway organised marketing. As outlined in our earlier post, there was little rationale to the film’s distribution. Lili appeared suddenly and briefly at second-run theatres and drive-ins across disparate suburban and provincial areas, while major metropolitan venues didn’t get the film till much later, if at all. In many markets, the film was booked for a fleeting season of a week or two – in some cases, just a few days -- and it was frequently paired as a double-bill with a host of poorly selected partner titles (Caen, 6-B).
The studio’s approach to promotion was no better. A generic pressbook and merchandising manual was issued, but it was very bare-bones and perfunctory. In the absence of a clear marketing plan, local exhibitors were left to promote the film more or less any way they liked. Advertisements were frequently altered to pitch Darling Lili in diverse, and often contradictory, ways. The main advertising art provided by Paramount -- with its central image of Julie in mid-song set within a sepia frame of art nouveau swirls -- positioned the film principally as a nostalgic star musical with touches of adult romance. Many local exhibitors took a very different approach. Some tried to reframe it as wholesome child-friendly fare: “This summer’s one and only total family entertainment;” “It’s Julie at her best! It’s for your family” (“This Summer,” 24). Other theatres pegged it as “a man’s movie,” stressing the action and warfare elements with taglines like “See the Best Dogfights of World War I” or “If you enjoyed Blue Max you’ll love Darling Lili” (“Man’s Movie”, 13; “Palms”, 64). Some exhibitors even openly recycled graphics from The Blue Max and other WW1 action films, with one Florida venue going so far as to revive the film’s original working title: Darling Lili, or Where Were You the Night You Said You Shot Down Baron Von Richtofen? (“Amusements,” 11A).
Elsewhere, exhibitors implemented a rash of dubious promotional incentives such as “twofers” or free entry to "one child under 12...with the purchase of one adult admission to Darling Lili” (“Capri”, 2D). A theatre in Fort Lauderdale offered “free admission to World War I veterans in uniform during matinees Monday through Friday” (“’Darling Lili’ Ducats,” 5D). Possibly well-intentioned gestures but it was bottom-barrel marketing that fostered an unfortunate aura of abject desperation around the film that likely turned off more patrons than it enticed.
Against this sorry backdrop of shambolic distribution and ham-fisted marketing, the meticulous handling of Darling Lili at Radio City Music Hall served as a strikingly singular counterpoint. The remarkable commercial success of the film at that venue -- which, if reported figures are to be believed, represented well over a third of the film’s entire US grosses (“US Films,” 184) -- can only be attributed in good part to the care and professionalism with which the Hall managed the film’s exhibition. One can’t help but wonder, therefore, how different the overall commercial fate of Darling Lili might have been had Paramount exercised a more discriminating distribution plan, affording the film the kind of special-event release it enjoyed in New York. It’s unlikely Lili would ever have been a major hit -- it was simply too narrow in appeal and out-of-step with the rapidly changing times -- but it certainly could have gone much further in recouping costs and might even have realised a modest profit. At a minimum, it would have helped redeem the film from its unjust reputation as the “Edsel that almost bankrupted Paramount Pictures” (Rosenfield, 5).
As a coda to this account of the exceptional history of Darling Lili at the Radio City Music Hall, it is interesting to note that the film fared well in New York not just commercially but also critically, Some of the film’s best US reviews came from New York critics -- a surprising turn-of-events given how notoriously hostile the East Coast critical establishment had been to Julie Andrews’ earlier screen musicals. Wanda Hale of the New York Daily News gave Darling Lili three-and-a-half stars out of four, writing:
“Radiantly beautiful, elegantly turned out, Julie Andrews graces Radio City Music Hall in a burst of song and dance, adventure and romance...[I]t’s Darling Lili everybody loves, so will you, you Music Hall patrons--you and the family” (Hale, 39).
Vincent Canby (1970) of the New York Times found Darling Lili “a pure if not perfect comedy” with “a lot of perverse charm and real cinematic beauty.” He continued:
“Although Julie Andrews (the film, not stage, star) has always struck me as a very mitigated delight, she may be the perfect centerpiece for this sort of fantasy. That is, her angular, aggressive profile, combined with her coolness and precision as a comedienne and a singer, give the immediate, comic lie to the adventures of a supposedly irresistible femme fatale. She thus is immensely funny...” (16).
In a rare honour, the New York Times afforded Darling Lili a second review from Roger Greenspan (1970) who argued for the film as a minor masterpiece of refined, borderline philosophical, sensibilities. “[O]ne very bright critic I know...has already compared the film, ecstatically, with Max Ophul’s great Lola Montes,” he remarked before launching into his own rhapsodic paean:
“To her characterisation, Miss Andrews brings a precision of gesture that matches Edwards’s directorial precision and that constitutes one of the most excitingly controlled expressions of theatrical presence I have ever seen in a movie. Not cold; elegant, finely drawn, perfect of its period--and yet inward, self-sustaining, as if already committed to that gorgeously contemplative state of transport that is the subject of the movie within the movie to look for in Darling Lili” (S2-10).
In a similar move, the inaugural issue of the New York-based cinephile journal, On Film devoted not one but two essay-tributes to Darling Lili from Stuart Byron and Mike Prokosch respectively. The former gushed:
“Darling Lili comes at the end of the big-budget musical cycle, and it [is] one of the only...good things to come out of the whole rotten effort to reduplicate The Sound of Music. But in any case, a masterpiece it is--Blake Edwards’ most beautiful film to date and surely his most meaningful. ... Edwards is the first director to utilise Julie Andrews’ full resources. Her rapid manner of speaking becomes the neutral fulcrum of her moods--it is sincerity hiding danger, or bitterness hiding love. Her singing, however tender on the surface, always gives the impression of concealing a quick intelligence ready to spring forth when needed” (Byron 1970, 31, 34).
Prokosch (1970) was equally smitten, calling Darling Lili “the only work of art Hollywood ha[s] released in 1970″:
“First. one must forget one’s preconceptions of Julie Andrews and look at the way Blake Edwards, the film’s director, casts his wife with remarkable shrewdness: Lili Smith is a young British singer caught in a situation she cannot master. What more natural part could Julie Andrews want? ... Darling Lili is really gutsy in its formal expression...Edwards’ control of the...formal means at his disposal--stylized lighting and colour, split-up background compositions, and especially cutting--displays a...complete knowledge of their emotional effect. What makes Darling Lili unique among recent releases, though, is its careful structuring. Almost every sequence...takes a clear place in the design of the film” (96).
If it sounds like these critics were a little woozy on the then new wine of auteur film theory, a measure of sobriety was served by none other than Andrew Sarris, chief architect of American auteurism, who filed a somewhat  more reserved, but nevertheless appreciative, review of Darling Lili for the Village Voice:
“Darling Lili is cinema a la folie, a rhapsody of romantic madness amid the current cacophony of absurdist dissonances, a sentimental valentine from Blake Edwards to Julie Andrews complete with gypsy violins and a Snoopy sub-plot about the Red Baron and the Dawn Patrol...but I’m afraid it won’t work for most audiences on any level. Its ingredients -- romance, satire, musical comedy, deadpan farce -- mix without blending. The song numbers don’t soar high enough and the prats don’t fall hard enough. But Darling Lili is never less than likeable, and its graceful professionalism is especially refreshing in this long hot summer of assorted crudities” (Sarris 1970, 47).
Despite his reservations, Sarris still included Darling Lili in his end-of-year list of the best films of 1970 -- as did several other Village Voice critics: Stuart Byron, Richard Corliss, Stephen Gottlieb, and William Paul (Sarris 1971, 59).
Now, if only the critics and audiences west of the Hudson had shown Darling Lili half-as-much love as the crowds at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, who knows how different the course of Hollywood history -- or at least that of the Julie Andrews screen musical -- might have been...

Book 2 FAQ!
Book 1 FAQ Beginning of Book 2
Dang y’all, 14 chapters done for Book 2! It’s been a little bit of a struggle to hash them out on time BUT I deliver. I’ve asked, y’all keyboard smashed in my inbox...let’s get INTO IT!
4 KIDS?!
Yep. And all 4 of them are full of personality! I guess I dreamt them up to convey all of the unspoken parts of the My Hero universe (canon or not).
Are the kid’s names in relation to their abilities?
No unfortunately, they’re names are based on their personalities/the major event that happened around the time they were born (no spoilers about it tho! Gotta read book 3 to know why!). Lili Perla is based off of Pearl from Steven Universe and their character type. Iwata El Roca is a nod to Luchador’s names and a character that passed away in the AU to honor them. Tensei Oro is a play on their family position, Tensei was the first born twin and his uncle was the first born, Oro is spanish for ‘gold’ and it’s a play on being first (ya know, because they give gold medals for 1st place!). Hanaka Rosa is a double trope name, Hanaka (Japanese: hana- flower, ka- power) is a nod to the tough girls with flower names in anime and Rosa (spanish: Rose) is a name used in telenovelas as the woman that causes all the romantic tension. I did the whole Japanese first name, Spanish middle name because thats what I want to do when I do have kids.
Why did Mineta have to be in this AU?
I hear you! The thing is that I DREAMT it like this. He’s the slightly incompetent teacher that gets dunked on by the parents. Good news is that he’s single and isn’t as gross in this part of the AU. He’s this AU’s punching bag if you will.
It was weird when you wrote in hate-crime/dorm incident bc I didn’t think about it that way...Why did you decide to explore it?
That part felt important to me to write. Yes the canon shows like actual crimes of different intensities, but not nessatreily hate-crimes done in schools. As you know, being LGBTQA+ in grade school is a terrifying thing to express if don’t want to stand out. The constant fear of peers judging you, bullies hurting you and teachers that seemingly don’t care about you if you come out is enough to silence anybody. Imagine that but in a hero school?! The hate-crime would be a villainous act and the culprit would have to do desperate measures to make sure nobody rats on them to maintain a clean image/record. Plus on the flip side, any ally that stands up for their oppressed peer is hailed the hero but they wouldn’t have to stand up for them if there were real consequences and punishment for the bullies. So in the AU, I wrote it how I’d want such hate-crimes to be handled. Not only justice but also accommodations for the victim.
The Mcdonalds order cracks me up! What is your Mcdonalds order?
I throughly enjoyed the Mcdonalds order part too. It’s a nod to the proposal in Book 1 when they went to Mcdonalds before the peer over. I wrote it to show that the family goes every now and then. My order is: Triple Cheeseburger, Large fries, Large sweet tea, 2 sausage and egg McMuffins & a cone. And yes, there will be a Mcdonalds order for every child because it drives the plot.
Will there be more interactions with the pro heroes from the canon series?
YES! Though old, theres more interactions planned with them. Of course, it’s all in Book 3 (trying not to spoil anything!).
Is it spoiler if you tell us if your kids (or one of them) becomes a villain?
I’ll tell y’all right now....NONE of my kids becomes a villain. It might look like one or two of them might from the way I wrote them but they’re just latina.
Will one of your kids be the next Ingenium?
Yes but I won’t tell you which one. But I can’t wait to reveal it to y'all!
I see all the call-backs to your self insert character’s past...Is it alluding to the conclusion?
I dreamt it as such and I fixed it in writing as a way to come full circle. Notice that Lili didn’t get any of her mom’s past from her mom? It wasn’t until when she confronted her on the couch in chapter 13. Even then, it wasn’t the full story nor did it fill in all the cracks and time skips after her mom’s time at UA. In Book 3, we explore more of the past. The conclusion is yet to be revealed.
How big is that house?!
It’s a little hard to explain? I want to say its big but parts of the house are disproportionate. It’s a two story house with no attic nor basement, 3 bath room, Master bedroom, 2 large bedrooms, office space, guest room, full kitchen, dining room, large living room, three car garage and a decent size backyard. What I’m trying to say that it’s big enough for that chaotic ass family.
Where’s Aizawa?!
Let the mans rest! He’s alive but he’s busy being a grandpa and taking naps.
Canon villains OwO?
Y’all ate UP the Dabi surrender in Book 1 and his little mention in Book 2. But in this AU (not to spoil anything to anime only and manga dabblers) the League of Villains are still rampant but dispersed. In Book 3 (and part of Book 4) they pop in to drive the plot from a canon storyline. In the series, the rookie Hawks has been seen as a double agent and exposes a corrupt Hero Society. Same concept but in this AU, Hawks has gone missing when he failed to kill Best Jeanist. Here’s where the kids go into play BUT more on that as the plot progresses!
I really want to see art of these OCs! I wanna see how Iida’s genes transferred over to his kids!
I hear y'all! I’ve slid into DM during commission windows and have the means to pay for some line art at least...but with no responses. I’ve got my self insert character done in this post if you wanna check it out plus the artist was super sweet during the whole process. I may commission them again when they got a window of commissions open. But I may do a lineart of the kid’s faces in the near future.
What if....hypothetically....Shinso stayed?
Oh boy, okay so the Shinso stans have BOMBARDED my asks since the last arc of Book 1. So what if Shinso stayed...obviously I wouldn’t have 4 kids, just the one that we were gonna have. We wouldn’t be married and overall just be loveless the more we see our friends get married and start families. The company would still be there but delayed by 5 years or so. Our son would grow up to convince me and Shinso to separate when they get at around High school age. Tenya still wouldn’t have said anything but done the reunited part differently. I would’ve considered cheating but morals would’ve stopped me. Eventually, when our son decides to move out, we’d stay as housemates and basically die alone....aren’t you glad this AU isn’t such a downer?! Luckily things are patched up with my self insert and Shinso, because he comes into play in Book 3!
Eri Nurse! In your AU!
Yup! I’ve actually read some NurseEri! AUs on twitter and Tumblr (btw, some of y’all that like my posts have good taste in fics!) and it manifested in my dreams and created UA Nurse Eri. She shows up a few more times in the AU, so don’t fret if Eri is your fave.
Is it okay if I follow you on a different platform? Do you have another social media that I can follow you on?
You can follow me on Twitter (@oketsusama). It’s my personal twitter that I repost memes and get my news from. So it’s not as poppin as my Tumblr, but at least it’s AU free over there lmao.
What’s you favorite rare pair in the My Hero canon storyline?
Oh! and DON’T hate me, but I stan the Sero x Iida rare pair! There’s crumbs of the pair on twitter and here but the ones that I did read got me in tears. If you haven’t seen this tag on twitter and Tumblr, DO IT! The one on twitter had a lot of angst in it and it got me HOOKED on some of that goofball with their geeky partner energy.
Not a question, but I like your //Palma-sama Speaks in the tags. They’re funny and makes your posts that much more personalized.
I will cry! Thanks for reading that far! I like doing the ‘talking in the tags’ thing to basically point out the callbacks to new readers that stumbled upon that chapter of the AU.
How long is this AU?!
It’s quite long BUT the ending is marvelous, trust.
============================================
Thanks for reading! That’s all the asks for now, keep asking them! I love reading them. Next is the finale of Book 2! Everything will still come out 2-3 days of each other until further notice. Stay safe, drink water!

Tagged by: @east--moon ty!!
Tagging: this is sort of a longer dash meme than i usually post SO i won’t tag anyone specific but bls steal it from me bc it’s so GOOD
𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬 !
FULL NAME. nicky maxwell lee NICKNAME. most often goes just by nick; sometimes his brother calls him max to annoy him GENDER. cis man     HEIGHT. 5′10″ / 177.8 cm AGE. 25 ZODIAC. pisces by accident (would’ve been a more accurate aries if he’d been born when he was supposed to hdksf) SPOKEN LANGUAGES. fluent in english and japanese. he understands some phrases (mostly curses) in spanish, french, german, italian, korean, mandarin, and russian, but can’t replicate them or carry on a conversation
𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 !
HAIR COLOR. jet black    EYE COLOR. dark green    SKIN. tends to be on the pale side of fair, but he can acquire a tan the more he’s exposed to the sun BODY TYPE. the slender side of athletic  DOMINANT HAND. left POSTURE/BODY LANGUAGE. nick tends to have good posture because the last thing he needs is to have a bad back on the job. he very much has a loud, dominating presence in a room of strangers just bc that’s how he’s used to carrying himself elsewhere. he’s extremely physically expressive, and if you know him well enough to know all his tics, he can be read like a book even if he’s trying to hide his emotions. he always has a need to be moving, so most of the time his body language includes some kind of fidget when he’s standing otherwise still, usually in the form of a bouncing leg. TATTOOS. none   MOST NOTICEABLE FEATURE(S). his eyes- people aren’t used to seeing asians with light eyes and often don’t believe him when he explains that they’re a less-rare occurrence from the part of japan his ancestors hail from. nick also has a radiant smile which can be kind of unexpected sometimes judging based on his resting bitch face. aside from his physical features, he also has a rather jarring accent if you’re not used to it.
𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 !
PLACE OF BIRTH. brownsville, brooklyn, new york HOMETOWN. again, brownsville, but he knows nyc as a whole like the back of his hand. SIBLINGS. teddy ryuu lee (older brother by four years) PARENTS. naomi hana lee (mother), ronin hibiki lee (father, estranged)
𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 !
OCCUPATION. emergency medical technician - basic, working in an advanced life support unit CURRENT RESIDENCE. a relatively cheap apartment in flatbush, brooklyn CLOSE FRIENDS. in canon he’s only really close friends with his coworkers, especially his paramedic partner lily vasquez. he usually doesn’t have much outside time to establish and maintain friendships, unfortunately. RELATIONSHIP STATUS. single FINANCIAL STATUS. moderate. he’s extremely frugal due to his upbringing so he doesn’t have trouble living within his means, but emts don’t make a lot of money, so those means are kind of on the small side. he eats a lot of ramen. DRIVER’S LICENSE. yes, but he only ever drives to the grocery store because who the fuck wants to drive a car in nyc. he’s also licensed to drive an ambulance! CRIMINAL RECORD. none on the books lmao
𝐬𝐞𝐱 & 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 !
SEXUAL ORIENTATION. bisexual, tends to exhibit a preference for men PREFERRED SEXUAL ROLE. submissive  |  dominant  |  switch  |  top  | bottom LIBIDO. quite high. TURN ONS. people who could kill him with their bare hands if they wanted to but are gentle with him lmao. dirty talk, praise, power struggles, rough sex as a whole. edging, as much as he claims he hates it. he just wants to be Loved TURN OFFS. choking/breathplay and being on the receiving end of bondage will send him into a panic. also just generally being an asshole unironically ain’t sexy RELATIONSHIP TENDENCIES. he’s ride or fucking die. he loves casual physical contact with his s/o, and getting them stupid little gifts and spending time with them. he wants you to know you’re loved and would like to know that he’s loved in return. he can be a bit clingy since he’s always got this lingering fear that he’s going to be abandoned.
𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐬  !
HOBBIES TO PASS TIME. lmao what hobbies. he does like to go on walks sometimes just to get out and move, but he doesn’t really have established hobbies otherwise. MENTAL ILLNESSES. mild, undiagnosed ptsd stemming from his sexual assault in college (he’s extremely heavy on the avoidance aspect). also not really a mental illness but he deals with diagnosed severe dyslexia (pure, neglect, and attentional) so if he can avoid reading he does. PHYSICAL ILLNESSES. he has sort of high blood pressure but he’s otherwise healthy hfskd LEFT OR RIGHT BRAINED. probably a little more left leaning bc his job requires him to be analytical, but he’s also chaotic as Fuck sometimes so it’s sorta balanced lmao PHOBIAS. deep water, open water, fast-moving water, if there’s a possibility he could drown in it he’s terrified. suffocation, as a whole. tightly confined spaces. being restrained with anything (rope, tape, handcuffs, whatever). all of it leads back to an overall fear of loss of control; he can deal with being alone, but he can’t deal with not having autonomy in situations.

Pairing: Kamilah x MC x Priya. Poly.
Cast: The whole cast (as of Book 1 chapter 11) are featured.
Synopsis: Diana falls in love with Kamilah and Priya while trying to save the Clanless who are left to die by the other vampires.
Author’s note: Please separate the artist from the work. You wouldn’t ask an actor who plays a serial killer if he kills people in real life. Like people, each character has different facets to them. In this story, no one is entirely from the light side and no one is entirely from the dark side. That’s all I can say without spoilers.

BLOODBOUND: THE WAY OF THE WORLD PROLOGUE
If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere, Diana remembered. That’s what they say about New York. Lily had told Diana that the people she met in New York would help her realize her dreams. Diana didn’t know how but she wanted to believe so.
The life in this concrete jungle, where tall buildings rise so high they seem to pierce the sky, may not be for everyone. Here, people talk fast, walk fast and do everything fast. Nobody has time. Everyone who isn’t rich or won’t have a large inheritance from their family anytime soon, has to work to live or live to work to keep themselves in New York City; the capital of the world and the centre of business and finance. Only the best of the best are here. You either go hard or you go somewhere else.
It was already four in the morning. Diana just finished brushing her long blond hair when she realised she couldn’t sleep in the luxurious and secure suite inside Raines Corp Tower. She set her large green eyes on the writing desk at the opposite site of the bed and thought she should write something down in her deep red leather bound journal which she just bought last week to make sure she wouldn’t forget anything or any details about the serious situations in her new life.
Being the classic case from a small town, Diana decided to leave for New York after her college graduation. People didn’t see her off. They just said things that were anything but supportive. Do you really think you can make it? How are you gonna do that? What if you fail? Diana remembered those words well. It made it easier for her to pack her things and catch a flight to New York. Some people from this young city craft their own way and become a part of history in this world. Diana wanted to make people see that there was something special about her. Most importantly, she wanted to be free from family values that branded certain things forbidden for women but not for men.
In this sleepless city, bright neon lights and the big, high definition digital screens make night more beautiful than day. Diana found that she really preferred dusk to dawn which was a good thing. Night had become Diana’s regular time of work merely a week ago after she became a personal assistant of a vampire CEO, Adrian Raines, the owner of Raines Corp; one of the leading companies in technology industry in the world.
One of the very important things anyone should know about vampire race was that not all of them were gorgeous and glamorous like they were made when featured in vampire films and fictions. In reality, there were all kinds of them. Some were utterly ugly and murderous. Some were incredibly kind and universally beautiful. Diana had met the former and she was very lucky to still be alive. She made a bunch of blood thirsty vampires her enemies after all.
Fortunately, the vampires around her were people she could trust. Adrian might look like a man in his mid twenties but in fact, he was around three hundred years old and he wanted to be the force of greater good in the world.
Kamilah Sayeed, the perfect beauty and the Egyptian vampire queen was the CEO of Ahmanet Financials, one of the most successful companies in financial industry on earth. Kamilah was royal by birth and reserved by choice. Even though she was two thousand and sixty three years old, her appearance was that of a woman in her late twenties. She would never grow old or deform. Her beauty was eternal like the universe itself.
After Lily Spencer, Diana’s roommate and best friend was attacked and was on the verge of dying, Diana begged Adrian to save her. The only way was to turn Lily into a vampire. Adrian did and Kamilah was furious at both Diana and Adrian. The action could jeopardise him and his whole clan. But what else was I supposed to do? Watching my best friend die? Diana thought. Kamilah threatened to kill Diana as a result but Diana wasn’t really afraid. She thought it was just something close to what a protective sibling sometimes say to their sister’s boyfriend; If you break her heart, I’ll break your neck.
Not only Kamilah was there the whole time during Lily’s turning process, she offered to teach and train Lily herself. Kamilah told Diana about Lysimachus, her twin brother who sacrificed himself for a good cause when the Egyptians were attacked by the Romans in 35 BC. That was five years before Cleopatra who was Kamilah’s cousin, passed away. Diana was convinced that Adrian reminded Kamilah a lot about her brother. Adrian and Lysimachus had a lot in common. It was plain to see why Kamilah was fiercely protective towards Adrian. The fact that Kamilah remembered precisely that they met two hundred and thirty four years ago said it all.
During her years as a human, Kamilah served as a nomarch. A governor of some sort and a title very rarely earned by a woman. Diana didn’t expect any less from a cousin of Cleopatra specifically when the last Queen of Egypt was known to be strong and fiery too.
A lot of things about Kamilah remained to be discovered. All Diana knew was that there was no one else Adrian trusted more than Kamilah.
Diana glanced at Lily who was lying on her stomach on their bed and was probably asleep. Lily was one day old in her vampire age and so it was her time to get some rest. When Diana was certain that her friend would not bother her, she got her journal out of a drawer and set it on the desk. She casually flipped through the pages without so much as glancing at what she had written. There were things she had already remembered by heart.
According to Adrian, there were one hundred and eighty vampires in New York City and six of them were the most powerful ones who had seats on The Council of New York vampires. These were also the leaders of other twenty nine members of their own clans. Each clan ruled in six different sectors. Kamilah in finance and Adrian in technology.
The Baron was a short, chubby man in his late sixties. He was a criminal before and after he became a vampire. A nightmare that no one ever wanted to come true. He was a gangster in 1920s, he still dressed like one and he was a gang leader today too and he probably would be until the end of time. Diana believed that if having been turned into a vampire couldn’t change a man then nothing else would. He reigned ruthlessly in organised crime.
Lester Castellanos who was neither tall nor nice must have been in his late fifties when he was turned. Lester had thick, untrimmed facial beard and thick greyish hair and a lot of worry lines on his face which definitely didn’t have any bad affects on him in commerce. After he caressed Diana’s arm in front of Adrian and Kamilah simply because he wanted to, Diana quickly went to the bathroom and washed her hands and arms twice. Then she remembered that she slapped his face and she washed her hands again for the third time. This was a kind of man who would make everyone of every sexuality run. Out of disgust, not fears.
Adam Vega was a tall, broad shouldered Spanish man with the kind of magnificent jawlines that handsome Hollywood actors have. He looked like a man in his forties. His thick dark hair and his thick eyebrows only added up to his charisma. But Diana learnt that at the end of the day, Vega was still a politician who only cared about himself and his own gain. Like the colonial Spanish nobleman that he used to be. Adrian had to pay a generous amount of money to him in exchange for his vote so Lily could be a new member of Clan Raines.
Despite the fact that Lily was no longer a human being, she still had feelings and she had every right to live as much as anybody else on earth. Yet Vega didn’t care. Lily is now one of his own kind but she is not one of his own clan. Like human society, the discrimination among vampire race existed. Diana couldn’t help but think about Jax and his people. Clanless and rejected. Excluded and soon to be executed. It was Vega’s idea to wipe them out once and for all. She wished she could do something for them. If only she could change Vega’s mind. But he was a kind of man who would not do anything for anyone unless he would receive an irresistible offer in return.
That is politics, she remembered what Adrian had said to her. Now Diana wondered why anyone should trust and give power to politicians to run their cities and countries when all they cared about was themselves and their benefits. It took Diana a few minutes to shake the thought of Vega out of her head.
And at last but not least, Priya Lacroix, a famous fashion designer who was gorgeous enough to be a model herself. Despite being the youngest clan leader among them, Priya was confident and comfortable leading Clan Lacroix and having a seat on The Council. On top of that, for the past years Priya thrived in fashion industry. It is one the most fast-paced careers of all time. Anyone who has money can own their own studio in New York but only those who are truly talented get to keep theirs. Priya was one of them. Not to mention, her studio was one of the most popular scenes in the city. Diana had met Priya only once and she found her to be extraordinarily exquisite. Her pair of playful brown eyes and and her full, sensual lips just suited her personality so well. One could never tell that Priya was slightly over one hundred and fifty years old when she looked and acted so naturally like a woman in her mid twenties.
Then there were the Clanless whom Diana decided to never write anything about in her journal for her and their safety. In case Diana and Adrian failed to get a vote from Priya to keep Lily alive, at least Lily would still have Jax Matsuo and the Clanless to rely on. Diana was convinced that they would never turn her away.
Another thing that Diana had never mentioned to anyone, not even to Lily, her best friend was her newfound clairvoyant abilities that enabled her to see visions. Fragments of Kamilah’s and Adrian’s past. There was always another man with them. He was called Gaius Augustine. Yet neither Kamilah nor Adrian had ever said his name. As far as she understood, Gaius was ancient and dangerous. She knew this because Kamilah and Adrian were different people when they were with him in the distant past.
Diana wondered what it meant to have the power that she had but she didn’t mind it at all. It made her feel empowered as though she was some sort of ‘the chosen one’ like those cool characters in fictions and films. She simply hoped that she wouldn’t need saving like a damsel in distress among the vampire race.
Diana craned her neck to Lily’s direction to make sure that she was still asleep before she started to write on her journal with her casual cursive handwritings that were feminine and rather tidy.
I am in New York. Is this the right place for me? Even when I’m right here right now, I still have doubts in my mind. Is this really where I belong?
I feel bad for Adrian. I feel bad for putting him in this awkward situation but there was no other choice to save Lily. I’m thankful for his selfless action. I think he likes me and I have nothing but friendship to offer. He’s a great guy but I just keep thinking about Priya and how perfect she was when I first met her in person. I’d like to meet her again though I’m not sure what I expect.
I want to know how she thinks about me or if she thinks about me at all after our first meeting. I want to know what she’s doing right now. When Adrian told me that we’d need Priya’s vote to save Lily, I was glad that it was her. I definitely don’t want to owe Lester or ask him for anything. Baron is cold blooded. He probably smiles when he kills someone. I think Priya will help us. Even though I don’t know her that much, I have a feeling she’ll understand.
When she was done, she put her journal back in a drawer, charged her phone and left it on the desk. Then she silently slipped into bed beside Lily and was ready for sleep to take her. She didn’t see a text message from Adrian which said that something urgent came up and so Diana would have to accompany someone else to meet Priya instead. Someone he trusted with his life.

About Rose
I’m not sure if I already have one of these, and I can’t find a template to make one, so I’m just gonna shoot my shot and do my best here.
Full name: Rosaline Pearl Sirena Draconus Durant
Time and place of birth: Wednesday, April 1st, 1992 at 3:01am (the witching hour) in the Touro Infirmary Hospital of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Zodiac: Aries sun (fire), Pisces moon (water), Aquarius rising/ascendant (air). Pisces, Aquarius, and Capricorn (earth) dominate her natal chart. Monkey (water). Alder tree. Red hawk/falcon.
Species explanation and list: Came about through ritual as well as conception originally; her soul collects more species each time she’s born (reincarnated) to non-human souls. Her soul is fragmented, there are more Roses throughout the world of different names. She only inherits certain traits from each species. She is predominantly draconic, sirenic, and succubic. Rose also has some wolf/lycanthrope, vampire (tribrid - blood, energy, and sexual separate from the succubus), banshee, Valkyrie (last life as one), Amazonian, basilisk (possibly only for this life), fairy, human, and possibly more - she doesn’t know everything just yet. Without feeding, her abilities become even more drastically limited.
Characteristics: Abilities may begin in childhood, but Rose’s memories don’t begin to resurface until teenhood and young adulthood. She may also repress her memories, furthering the process, in attempts at normalcy. Jack of all trades. Artist, but not in the layman usage of the word - dancer, singer, creative writer, musician. STEM major, always good at STEM. Linguaphile; often multilingual. Current fluencies: English and French, with some German, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Korean, and Russian. Much of her interest in languages and ability to learn them rapidly stems from former lives. Very pensive and philosophic, a stoic in the regular sense of the word but an existentialist in practice.

Communication with entities beyond the veil despite her attempts to shut them out. Astral projection.
More abilities and characteristics, positive and negative, by species:
1. Dragon: old soul/wise beyond her years, increased intelligence, heightened senses, increased empathy and strength, stronger persuasion via a golden tongue, foresight or future-delving. Manipulation, word twisting, speaking in riddles. Strong debater. Bloodthirsty. Intensely greedy. Power hungry. Delusions of grandeur. Arrogant. Pansexual. Extroverted. Stubborn and/or hard-headed. So cold you’d bet she’s anemic. Close-minded. TOO LOUD. She wants your heart, but on a GOLDEN platter; she’ll never love you. You are so beneath her, who the fuck do you think you are? Enemy of the siren. Fiercely loyal to those who have earned it. Family is the most important thing. Money can buy happiness, and it has for her. Warmest smile. Tacky bitch. Really good at Words with Friends, Scrabble, fighting you, chess. Wants you to succeed in life, and gives you unsolicited advice on how to do it all the time. Annoying. Always has an upset tummy. Does she have IBS? Beyond the veil: red with orange eyes. Your typical bigass crimson red dragon, will breathe fire on you. Her kind is less prevalent than they once were.
2. Siren: leads people astray readily. Seduction. Outright deception. Enticement and intimidation via a silver tongue. Increased strength and agility. Strong swimmer. Telepathy with other sirens. Enemy of the dragon. Brutal bitch. Savage, almost feral at times. Ambivert. Manipulative. Intensely maternal. Your mom friend to the extreme. Loving. Pansexual. Invasive. Monster. Might eat your liver in the pool. Always too hot. God, that voice, let’s hope you never hear it. Opera. SUSHI!!!!. Friendly, communal even, but only with those she considers family. Too good for pop music unless it’s Ariana Grande; increased hearing, gets audio overload at any normal volume. Subtitles, please. Can’t fucking understand English to save her life. Will teach you sirenic, but you can’t speak it. Whistle notes. LOWER YOUR FUCKING VOICE. Half-naked, huge tits. Firm hugger. Beyond the veil: ugly ass deep sea thing you never want to see, but her Venetian red tail is pretty... Second, translucent eyelid. Sirens of the sea are populating as rampantly as always, given the content of the earth which is saltwater. Avoids all of her kind to protect one she loves.
-Unpopular with both dragons and sirens due to some old war. These two species are most dominant.
3. Succubus: a touch that can manipulate, seduce, control, compel. Feeding, starving. Glamour. Conceited. Preppy bitch. Sarcastic. A gaslighter. Manipulative. Extroverted. PANSEXUAL, literally doesn’t care, will fuck you, don’t let her. Fake. Craves you. Enemy of the siren. She’s that overly sexual friend where you can never really tell whether they’re kidding or really trying something with you, you know? She’ll never tell, either. Got that?? Fear her. Run; she will definitely fuck your brains out and fucking eat you, God she’s fucking starving. RUN. Don’t give her a drink, and so help you if she gets to three or more. There is no God; God is dead, she has killed him, she drained his chi. RUN AWAY: fucking demonic. Don’t let her in. She made sure no one is here to help. Don’t look at them. They won’t help you; they’re under her control. You will be too. Beyond the veil: Horns. Tail. Wings. Greyish-purple all over, even her eyes; looks like a gargoyle. She doesn’t eat enough to pigment, and who cares? Glamour will make her perfect anyway. Finds feeding unethical. Slip-ups happen, though; I’m coming for you.
4. Wolf: increased agility, strength, and durability. Heightened stamina, senes. Increased stamina. Fast healing. Telepathy with other wolves. FIERCELY loyal. Respectful. Hungry. Bloodthirsty. Feral. Beast. Aching in her soul and bones. Titanium. Sushi. Friendly and communal all the time. Pansexual. Major ambivert. Audio overload too. Will cry if someone raises their voice from across a room. You’re too boomy. Stop that. Will kill anyone who makes you shed a tear. Don’t let her. Specifically tell her not to while you are crying. She will do it, I swear. Alpha bitch. Beyond the veil: albino Eurasian wolf, mistaken for an Arctic wolf. Icy grey eyes. Her kind is dead; those eyes show it. What’s an alpha without a pack? Heartbroken.
5. Valkyrie: Literally wishing to death, has to stop herself from it because it’s so easy. Planting doubt in the minds of the steadfast and resolute. Asexual. Will give you hallucinations. Manipulative. Spooky bitch. Might want you dead, might not. Don’t cross her or she’ll imagine you to eternal slumber. You won’t be in Valhalla, either.
6. Amazonian: Increased strength. Tracker. Skilled with weapons. Will navigate. Misandry. Lesbian. Introverted. Feminist bitch. Will stab you.
7. Banshee: Future-delving. A screech that will drive you mad and physically harm you only when members of inhuman royalty are dying. Introvert. Asexual. Beyond the veil: Blind as a bat, deaf as a white cat. Only sees the astral world in her head. Just looks like herself minus the white eyes. Only brought out by screaming, and terrified the entire time, but can remain after. Will cough or vomit blood for a while after screaming. Can’t control it. Scared bitch. Voice may not return to normal for weeks. Enemy of the siren. Prefers to, and sometimes must remain after screaming, mute. Cannot sign. Can see and feel your energy.
8. Basilisk: Increased ability to intimidate. Muted. Affinity for reptiles. No other abilities or notable change. Beyond the veil: she cannot turn into the giant snake of lore, nor turn to stone. If looks could kill, she would just kinda spook you. Literally just herself. Angry bitch.
9. Fairy: No increased abilities but she’s cuter and has more of a sweet tooth. Vocal change to higher pitch. Please give her Jaffa cakes, hot tea, and head pats. Beyond the veil: a tiny, wingless fairy of greens, golds, and purples. Don’t let the look fool you. Evil bitch.
10. Vampire: Increased sense of hearing and smell. Bloodlust. Ability to compel. Seduction. Extrovert. Clean freak. If there's no blood on her, it's like she never did it. Feeds on the environment around her, including people, naturally. Constantly tries to keep that shut off. Wants very badly to eat you. Hungry bitch.
Sometimes she wakes up a certain species, sometimes situations or location bring them out. Sometimes the need to feed or emotions will cause certain species to rush to forefront. This is akin to having different personalities, but it’s all her.

.
.
She has a highly fluctuating weight (between 114 and 178) due to eating disorders - anorexia nervosa restrict type and bulimia nervosa binge purge type. Sheuses exercise, laxatives, suppositories, etc rather than the usual purging. Faint cut scars adorned her thighs and left wrist; she had them tattooed to cover them but the white lines still showed. There was a flower over the wrist, a portrait of a fox on her right thigh, and a portrait of a Renaissance-era woman on her left. There were cigarette burns inches below the Renaissance woman and the flower tattoo. There was another one midway on her outer right forearm.
