Wow… Yoshiko thought as the song came to an end. Riri really does take music seriously. She glanced at the woman beside her who seemed barely able stay steady on her feet.

Riko seemed to be relying heavily on the celestial power of her bat-like wings to keep herself from collapsing. She gripped her mic accessory with enough force Yoshiko worried it might shatter at any moment and her gaze was unfocused enough that she probably couldn’t see the screen for the lyrics.

But none of that mattered. The scores didn’t lie. Riko had won the karaoke duet. Handily.

“wunnERful ah lnɟɹǝuNnʍ um!”

“Kyaa!” Riko cried, practically jumping into Yoshiko’s arms as a voice warbled through their minds.

“Envy!” Yoshiko scolded. “What have I told you about scaring Riri when she’s drunk?”

“tHank Ewe ladiEs for Dhat ⅄lǝʌol numBer!” The brain in a jar continued unperturbed. “an’ Now oN a wid thE ʍoɥs. hEre’s ʇ∀ɥʇ yung maN aboUt twon, tonY alLen to ƃuᴉs niTe oWl. Ah wun anA 2…”

What sounded like R&B style piano started to play. Was Envy picking up radio waves or something?

“Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!”

That… sounded surprisingly clear. But even more surprising was that Riko seemed to perk up. She pulled away from Yoshiko and stared at Envy.

“Ooooo… Night owl. tAke it lEakho…”

“We~ll, here come the night owl.” Riko sang, her voice giving no indication of her drunken state. “Walkin’ through the front do~~or.” She swayed over to the pedestal that held Envy while it continued to sing its own part. “Thought I to~~ld you ba~~~by, I don’t love you no more.”

Yoshiko watched in wonderment as her girlfriend and friend continued their bluesy duet in lovely harmony.

“Wunner…” Yoshiko shook her head. “Wonderful!” She applauded after the two finished. “That was amazing, Riri! And Envy, I didn’t know you could sing?”

“thanK yOu puɐ guD EveniNg frieNds! weRe coMing to U ǝƆuo Again fRom da Lov3ly tshUsHima ApArtment, eaR in tOkyo.” Envy continued with its apparent broadcast. It wasn’t actually sending out radio signals… was it? “oUr Next sung… teh sƎlqqnq don coMe unTill De End of dA shoW. ǝSɐǝld TurN oFF The bUbble maChiNe… it’S Gone alL snԀɯ∀ʍʎʇʇɐɔ…”

“Wa’s the neks song?” Riko slurred, as if she hadn’t just sung two songs with crystal clarity. “We gon’ sing ‘till daybreak!”

“deMin JacKet bY maRooN 7.”

“5?”

“trEE.”

“Won?”

Riko giggled.

The music started. The brain and the demon began to sing. And the angel took a seat on the couch to enjoy the show.

Author’s Note Continued: I amused myself greatly seeing how many prior prompts I could squeeze into this one. Even got more from last year than just the one I was going for to keep up my self challenge.

rating east asian ya book characters written by white authors

some disclaimers!!! 1) im half chinese 2) this is in no way the cold hard facts or anything this is just my opinion + the things ive seen/heard other people say so feel free to (nicely) tell me your thoughts on it!! especially other asian people :) 3) im not saying you have to suddenly hate the books these characters are from. in fact, i like most of these books! im just saying its important to be critical of the things you like. also this is a joke post. ok enjoy lmao

The story revolves around the Palmetto State Foxes, an NCAA Exy team with the main plot being centered around Neil Josten, a kid on the run from his mob boss father. It is primarily a sports story and follows a storyline typical of the genre—with added drugs, violence, and gangsters.

Main character Neil Josten is in hiding, on the run from his mob boss father. He's a Consummate Liar who's just trying to lie low, but when he plays Exy for his latest high school, he somehow catches the attention of David Wymack, head coach of a Class I college team. He shouldn't say yes to the offer, but he does—and is instantly plunged into a world of tangled relationships, shady deals, lots of violence, and The Power of Friendship.

Oh man. Where do I start with this. Probably with the beggining as to why do I read the all for the game serie, since its a 2013 novel ? Because well, I saw it plastered everywhere since day one on instagram. And the curious side of me wanted to dive deeper into it. At first, I wasn't sure about it and would gladly skip it, because gangster story and sports wasn't at all my thing (mind y'all that I now have 3 sports + lgbt YA book yet to read in my tbr since I've started TFC) but what a mistake ! I now consider myself a fox, even bought the paperback copies (lol I know) and I ship a lot of thing in that book. For this review though, i'll try and go as spoiler free as I can.

First of all, I love Exy. Even tho it doesn't make any sense at all, as a sport itself, I found myself imagining everything perfectly. Like imagine LaCrosse, but with hockey's violent part and that is amazing. That's how I pictured Exy and that's how I would play it. But let's put that aside in favor of talking about the cast. What I have to say first is that I didn't know you could put so much side story in a book without it being too much ! Every or so key character got their own moment of glory through the serie and that's amazing. You could believe the whole plot would be centered around Neil Josten, as the synopsis is implying, but no! it became from time to time more a snippet of the other of the team and man that is story telling and character developpement at its finest.

I won't lie, my first impression of the book would have been, as I saw a lot of fantastic fanart that would imply it, that Neil and Andrew would fall in love together in the cheekiest way possible and then they would be okay together and live happily ever after, but how I was wrong and how I ship it ! I want more story with a clingy but not so much relationship ! (But maybe not centered around abuse, because that suck).

Anyway, I will try to summarize everything in less than an actual book and start with the main plot. It's actually an awful start of a plot, since we talk about a runaway child being signed in the worst team of the Class I exy team. (And the fuck how they magically start to win everything after Neil arrival and despite everything that happen to them between the three books. How do they do that ?! ) then come into the equation the Edgar Allan's Raven. A whole team of archnemesis to the Foxes. Dun dun Duuunn !

For most part, Exy is useless for the main plot and just an unpleasant distraction from the important part, which is Riko Moriyama being an assbutt and Kevin Day a crybaby. Okay no. They are, but it's far more complicated than that. The more I wrote down that review, the more I realise that the plot is sh*t, but what makes this story interesting is the craving to know what the fuck is happening, from this constant need to believe that the love affair between Neil and Andrew is going to end in something completly different that the unholy thing it is in the first few half of the two first book. (We are far from this bullcrap of hater to lover rag, since it's more about Andrew and Neil’s relationship is based around physical expressions of affection and respect, as opposed to verbally lovey dovey stuff) to the need to know if one of them is going to get killed (hint; there is definitly some killing involved, this is a damn gangster story after all)

I gave it 5 stars because it got me hooked, not because that's the best story ever. Mind y'all, because AFTG serie is just like reading an AU fanfic, well kinda. But probably because of the character developement. As I said earlier in this exact review, I love how everyone has their part of the story, even Riko and Jean at some point, that are in the opposite team (the baddies). I also love how you unravel certain mystery through the books. It's not about a reckless teenager afraid of living, but about a whole group (team) being challenged by life and the weight that carry each of them.

Is it worth reading? I'd say yes, because it get better. Surprisingly, I want another book too. Just for the sake of knowing what would happen at court.

PreCures and If They Would Survive A Horror Movie

Nagisa: would survive. She’s the most competent pink cure both on and off the battlefield, she will destroy the villain and look badass doing it. 

Honoka: Her science stuff probably created the bad guy in the first place when it went haywire. And since she would know how to defeat the villain, she would have to die early on for there to be a horror movie at all. 

Hikari: Absolutely would not survive. All she does is stand there and sometimes freeze the enemy in place for two seconds. She only transforms when reminded to. Also she’s a blonde and horror villains always go for blondes. There’s no way she’d live. Hikari would stand there frozen in place and scream until she dies gruesomely. 

Saki: I don’t know but nagisa survives so i’m gonna say saki does too. 

Mai: also don’t know. i’mma say no. 

Nozomi: Would not survive. There is no way nozomi would make it out. 

Rin: Would survive. After watching Nozomi die, Rin would go full-on enraged feral jock, transform, and set the villain on fire. 

Urara: Would not survive. She’d probably go right into the dark place and do the thing where you spot the villain with your flashlight and dismiss it before doing a major double take but now it’s right behind you. 

Komachi: Would survive, all the way. She reads a lot so she knows her way around how to survive these things. She writes a lot so she knows shady topics and would think of or know things that if she didn’t know, the whole team would be screwed. And she’s a walking weapon of mass destruction on top of all that. 

Karen: She’s hiding in a secret fortified bunker right now with bodyguards and lots of entertainment. She would survive. 

Kurumi: Would not survive. When she reverts to fairy form against her own will, the bad guy would pick her up and throw her into some mechanical thing that grinds her up alive and is the main reason for the R rating. 

Love: Would last 5 minutes. Seriously, in the first episode she got lost and saw a creepy house in the woods that wasn’t there before and what does she do? SHE GOES IN. If that were a horror movie, she’d be a redshirt designed to be killed off in the first few minutes for the purpose of introducing us to the bad guy and showing how dangerous it is. 

Miki: Would survive. Miki has gone up against a villain who came straight out of the horror genre (Northa) and survived. Another horror villain would be no problem. Unless it’s hide time and she can’t hide properly because she’s so tall. 

Inori: Might survive. Might end up dying so that the cat in the movie doesn’t. 

Setsuna: Setsuna has lived through a horror movie (episode 40 of fresh precure). She’s dealt with some serious heck. She will absolutely survive a horror movie. 

Tsubomi: All Tsubomi would do is run. Thankfully, she’s not clumsy like some pinks, and would probably actually manage to make it out by running away. 

Erika: Would survive. Erika cannot be killed. 

Itsuki: This girl knows martial arts. She fought off a giant monster because it ripped a plushie she thought was cute. Horror villains should be scared of Itsuki. 

Yuri: ABSOLUTELY would survive. Did you see her take out an entire group of Sunackies in civilian form? She’s a genius, a badass, and would survive a horror movie hands-down. 

Hibiki: Would survive 

Kanade: Would survive, but only because Crescendo Tone can bring people back to life. 

Ellen: Would survive. Remember how she trolled some villains who were trying to scare her? She’d do the same thing. Except it’s also leading the bad guy into a death trap. 

Ako: She’s that little girl who befriends the ghosts or whatever and talks about them casually in a scary way and then either becomes possessed, helps the villain kill everyone else, or just skip ropes on the playground singing terrifying versions of nursery rhymes. She survives, obviously. Forming an alliance with the villains can help you with that. 

Miyuki: Would not survive. The reason for this is that by the time she realizes what genre she’s actually in, it would be too late for her already. 

Akane: Would survive. Arson queen with the makings of a genderflipped shonen protag and super strength even by precure standards? She will destroy the bad guys. 

Yayoi: Would survive. She watches enough anime and toku, reads enough manga and comic books, and plays enough video games to know everything about how to survive a horror movie. Also, she likes ghost stories. She ABSOLUTELY would catch on right away that she’s in a horror movie and maybe even fangirl over the villain a little. 

Nao: Would be the only one to realize THE MAGIC TELEPORTING BOOKSHELF and escape. 

Reika: Similar to Miki and Setsuna, Reika has gone up against a villain who’s scary enough to be in horror, in this case Joker. And she has won. Several times. Reika would absolutely survive. What’s another horror villain? 

Mana: Would sacrifice herself to save her team. 

Rikka: Would not survive. She’d obtain information and realize a way to defeat the villain that would 100% work, which means that while she’s explaining it, she’d be killed mid-sentence. 

Alice: Would ABSOLUTELY survive. She has a freaking SPACE SHUTTLE, her place is full of traps and secret tunnels, she’s one of the most badass and terrifying cures, AND both she and her butler are Batman. Alice is by far the most likely precure to survive a horror movie. 

Makoto: Did the sensible thing and hid out with Alice. Is currently hanging out in a secret room with protection, every light on, and her back to the wall so she can’t be ambushed from behind, watching willcraft monster school on her phone on silent. 

Aguri: Dies of overconfidence. 

Regina: Is the one to kill the villain. 

Megumi: She would transform and be like “AW YEAH I GET TO BATTLE SOMETHING” and then obliterate the villain, surviving the movie in the process. Unless she tried to form change. If she used her dance attacks, she’d be stabbed or dismembered or eaten while she’s charging up her attack. 

Hime: Survives the movie itself. Is killed after the credits to show that the villain isn’t really dead and set up a sequel. 

Yuko: First one on the team to die. 

Iona: Would definitely survive. She’s the only one on her team who’s 100% cool with doing what it takes to defeat the bad guys and she’s a badass. 

Maria: Did you see the time she took out 4 monsters at once? She would survive. 

Haruka: Like with most pinks, Haruka would probably not survive. 

Minami: Would stand there screaming until she gets stabbed. 

Kirara: Same deal as Erika. 

Towa: She’s a fire cure. Fire often works against these guys. But they have no compulsion about attacking someone while she’s preparing her drawn-out attack sequence, and the extreme impracticality of her outfit could end up killing her. It’s around 50/50 for Towa. 

Mirai: Would last 20 minutes if she’s lucky. She’s probably the one who read the creepy old book out loud and released the demon/monster/whatever. 

Riko: Has enough knowledge of the supernatural to know how to defeat the thing Mirai summoned. Is targeted as a result. Eventually dies directly after a jumpscare. Is brought back to life by Kotoha. 

Kotoha: She’s a literal goddess and she’s got the strongest magic of anyone ever. She will survive without question. 

Ichika: Hate to say this, but she would probably not survive. *begins sobbing at the thought of my precious daughter dying in a horror movie* 

Himari: Would also probably die. But would last for far longer than Ichika. 

Aoi: Would power through an otherwise fatal injury and somehow survive something that definitely should have killed her, because she needs to write a song about this. 

Yukari: Old enough to drive. Smart enough to check the back seat. 

Akira: Sits in the passenger seat as the two floor it. Checks under the car for villains while Yukari is watching her back. 

Ciel: Switches to fairy form and flies so high the villains can’t get her. 

Pikario: Gets run over by Yukari and Akira. 

Hana: Survives the first half of the movie. Dies when she runs upstairs instead of outside. 

Saaya: She spent an entire night just watching horror movies once and now she knows everything about how to survive them. Makes it out alive. 

Homare: Survives

Emiru: Is hiding in a security bunker

Ruru: Is hiding with Emiru

Hikaru: She’s really into cryptids and occult stuff, so she knows their weaknesses, and survives the whole movie as a result. Probably hits on the monster at least once. 

Lala: Runs right into her spaceship and gets TF out of there. 

Elena: Holds out for a good amount of time. Then her phone rings while she’s hiding. 

Madoka: Made it onto the spaceship with Lala. 

Yuni: Uses her shapeshifting perfume to disguise herself as a corpse version of herself. Successfully tricks the bad guy into thinking she’s dead. 

Nodoka: Passes out, dies first. 

Chiyu: Survives 

Hinata: Would not survive. She’s too much of a hot mess to last in a horror movie. 

Asumi: Would die if she remained untransformed. If she transformed, she would survive hands-down.

Bookshelf Briefs 1/4/21

Black Clover, Vol. 23 | By Yuki Tabata | Viz Media – Given we came to the end of a very long arc last time, it makes sense that there’s a lot of goofy comedy before we start the next arc (which has a timeskip!). Fortunately, Black Clover is pretty good at being dumb and goofy in a shonen way—I’ve said before that it’s ripping off every single shonen series in the world, but it’s not doing it badly. Therefore we get a lot of silly love confessions, and priestesses who wear spiral “nerd” glasses like Mousse from Ranma 1/2. Oh yes, and Asta is not executed—for now. They still think he’s totally evil, though. Hopefully fighting a devil may help to change that opinion. This has become one of the longest-running Jump series now, and it’s easy to see why it’s still going. – Sean Gaffney

Days of Love at Seagull Villa, Vol. 1 | By Kodama Naoko | Seven Seas – Another yuri series from this author, this book starts with one of our heroines fleeing to the countryside after her boyfriend gets her best friend pregnant. She’s there to teach (and boy, her class could use some lessons in “don’t slutshame and don’t bully”), but she’s also staying with a young woman who’s raising a kid alone after her whole family was killed. The two are seeming opposites, but turn out to possibly have much in common. The yuri so far here is just a drunken kiss, but I’m sure there will be more to it. That said, the series seems content to introduce its cast and then start to simmer things to a slow boil. That’s good too. I want to learn more about this village. – Sean Gaffney

Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! Everyday Misadventures!, Vol. 1 | By FUNA and Yuki Moritaka | Seven Seas – I was expecting this to be a 4-koma sort of volume, but it isn’t. Instead it’s just goofy comedy chapters without the ongoing plot that we get in the normal series. So you get things like Reina trying to learn to cook, and Mavis getting hit on by women again, etc. The usual stereotypes apply—Pauline has large breasts, Mile is… well, Mile, Reina is hot-headed, etc. There’s also a flashback to Adele’s experiences at school, where it turns out that all the school’s “Seven Mysteries” are just her being stupidly overpowered. No one should get this who’s not a fan of the original, but those who are should be quite pleased. – Sean Gaffney

Dr. STONE, Vol. 14 | By Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi | Viz Media – Most of this volume is trying to rescue everyone from the evil village “god” and his even more evil minion, who is unfortunately more overpowered than most of our team. On the cool side, most of the rest of the group gets un-petrified after recovering their bodies from the ocean floor, thanks to the power of Taiju being really strong and really dumb. On the less-cool side, Kohaku and Ginro are now petrified, though frankly that’s a good thing in Ginro’s case, as he was bleeding to death. This is probably the biggest villain that Senku and company have had to face before, so it makes sense that he’s finally taking a very dark step (as he himself says) and bringing guns into this world. Great fun. – Sean Gaffney

Eniale & Dewiela, Vol. 1 | By Kamome Shirahama | Yen Press – I was told when I saw who the author of this series was that I should not expect it to be much like Witch Hat Atelier, and that’s an understatement if anything. Oh, the art is still amazingly gorgeous, but the content is very much designed for those who enjoy the dynamic of, say, Gabriel Dropout. An angel and a demon are best friends despite sniping at each other the entire volume. Eniale is a bit of a featherhead. Dewiela has a bit of a temper. Together, they get involved in Very Wacky Situations. How much you enjoy this will depend on how wacky you find the situations. I found it fun, but I think I would enjoy it better in a magazine chapter by chapter than in volume form. – Sean Gaffney

Hatsu*Haru, Vol. 13 | By Shizuki Fujisawa | Yen Press – This series about four couples—heavily overbalanced towards two of them—finally comes to a close by going back to its leads, as Riko’s mom is moving due to her job and… is NOT asking Riko to come with her. Yes, the final volume involves everyone trying to self-sacrifice the most, with lots of tears and angry words. Of course we know that Riko really needs to be with her mom, even if they may not have the best relationship, which of course means that she and Kai are now far from each other. Fortunately, it’s the final volume, so this can be resolved with a flash forward to college. This was a solid series, but I’ll remember it for Takaya and Ayumi more than anyone else—in fact, possibly just Ayumi. – Sean Gaffney

I Love You So Much, I Hate You | By Yuni | Yen Press – Ayako Asano and Saori Fujimura are both accomplished, successful career women working closely with each other at their company. But outside of the office they’re even closer—they’ve actually started sleeping with one another. Two women becoming romantically involved isn’t so much of an issue, but the fact that Ayako is both married to a man and is Saori’s boss poses some significant problems. I Love You So Much, I Hate You is a mature manga dealing with some mature themes. Initially, there are definite imbalances in Ayako and Saori’s relationship, each woman approaching it from a different starting point and hoping to get different things out of it. However, over the course of the volume their needs and desires begin to align. But it’s not easy for either of them for a variety of reasons; granted, a relationship that starts out as an affair is bound to be complicated. – Ash Brown

An Incurable Case of Love, Vol. 5 | By Maki Enjoji | Viz Media – Nanase and Dr. Tendo are a couple now, so, inevitably, we must introduce the rivals. This volume gives us the first one, a rich young man with a medical condition who cynically says that people only care about him because of his money. He runs into Nanase, who is, well, herself, and falls head over heels in love with her. I was impressed how the author took this old-standard josei manga trope and simply… had the leads act like adults. There are a few misunderstandings and small fights, but there’s no huge blowup or breakup, mostly as Dr. Tendo is very familiar with who Nanase is. That said, Nanase still has self-image issues, and the cliffhanger implies a stronger rival on the way. Maki Enjoji is always good. – Sean Gaffney

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Vol. 17 | By Aka Akasaka | Viz Media – While we’re still dealing with the consequences of Miyuki and Kaguya dating, the series really has gotten very good at the tiny little jokes. Including possibly the DARKEST ‘in between chapters’ gag I’ve ever seen, where Iino talks about how she enjoys pain as it makes her “feel safe.” As for Chika, I think she has realized that the author increasingly doesn’t know what to do with her. She probably does not have a big character-building arc like the other four, so she’s essentially the goofy one that annoys people, something she is catching on to. Though the funniest chapter in this book features Karen invading the main title from her spin-off manga—still sadly not licensed—and almost getting everyone arrested. – Sean Gaffney

Practice Makes Perfect, Vol. 3 | By Ui Hanamiya | Kodansha Comics (digitial only) – This volume has our lead couple finally going all the way, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t problems. For one, the first time HURTS, and even successive attempts are nine parts pain to one part pleasure for Nohara (who, amusingly, is still trying to handle this in a “sports” way, as is Yano). There’s also the fact that Yano thinks that Nohara is going to break if he tries to be anything but super super gentle, which… also is not helping, though it leads to the volume’s best joke. Fortunately, the next volume is the last. Unfortunately, it appears that we’re going to get a “hey, the girl I love spends her days surrounded by hot guys!” chapter. Still, this Rated-R manga is still a lot more fun than I expected. – Sean Gaffney

“So you and Mari are like, really close, huh?”

Kanan raised an eyebrow as she stared forward at Chika, who sat across the table from her. Although they were in the school library and meant to be studying-- Chika especially-- it seemed she had something else on her mind.

That, or she was simply making small talk as an excuse to not study. Both could probably be likely. Kanan decided to respond anyways, albeit with a very simple answer and a shrug. “Well, yeah. Have been for a while. Why?”

“It’s just…” Chika rested an elbow on the table, chin in her hand. “I was thinking, it would be really great if I could be that close with Riko, y’know?”

“You think?”

Kanan was given a vigorous nod to the simple question. Clearly, this was going somewhere. “Yeah! Do you think you could give me advice?”

“Advice…” Kanan furrowed her brow slightly. “On becoming closer with Riko? I don’t know… Considering you’ve known each other for less than a full year, I’d think you’re already really good friends with her in that time. Aren’t you?”

“Well yeah, we are, but not the same way as you and Mari!”

“I mean, I guess not, but…”

“Okay, um, if I have to just come out and say it…” Chika, likely sensing Kanan’s utter confusion, gave an oddly shy chuckle. Really, what was this about? “I... wanna know how you asked Mari out.”

Chika fidgeted, poking her fingers together as Kanan registered what was asked, the unexpectedness of the question making the process just a bit slow.

“...What? Asked her out? I don’t know what Mari told you, but whatever it was, she was probably making things up.”

“N-No, Mari didn’t say anything! Sorry, are you guys, like, on the DL? I didn’t realize--”

Kanan quieted Chika with a raised hand. “Chika, I… have no idea where you even got the idea that we’re dating…”

“Well… I thought it was obvious? I mean, the way you two act with each other… I never really saw you act that way in the past around anyone! Although I guess I never even saw you hanging out with Mari or Dia before I started high school… I was super surprised to hear how close friends you guys all were.”

“I mean, it’s always been like that between us… It was just hard to hang out outside of school because of Mari’s parents, and then she went to study abroad…”

Chika’s eyes practically sparkled, and she grinned widely. Kanan had a sinking feeling that this misunderstanding was just deepening... “Wow, you’ve been in love with each other for that long? That’s so cute...! Why didn’t you ever tell me, Kanan? Was it because your love is forbidden and stuff, so you had to keep it a secret?”

“Tha-- That’s not what I meant!” Kanan could feel her face starting to heat up, and she really hoped she wasn’t visibly blushing. This was just embarrassing! “I’m trying to say we’re not dating and we’re not in love with each other! A-- And I don’t even treat her that much differently from my other friends, so…”

“Eh? Kanan, are you… a tsundere?”

“No, Chika!” 

Before Kanan could continue, the two could hear an abrupt slamming noise which drew their attention to the front desk where Hanamaru sat, staring at both girls with a scolding expression usually just reserved for Yoshiko. Whoops, right, they were in the library…

Kanan frowned, but she turned back to Chika and lowered her voice. “She’s just really affectionate and stuff. It’s not like she wants to date me…”

“What if she does?”

“Excuse me?”

Chika tilted her head. “What if she does want to date you? If she did, would you?”

“If she really did, I’m sure she would have said something by now… given the type of person Mari is.”

“But what if, Kanan? C’mon, even just hypothetically?”

“Geez… You’re really pushing it, Chika. Look, I don’t… I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it. Not much, anyways…”

“S-Sorry. But… if that’s the case, you do like her at least a little bit, right? ‘Cause if you didn’t, you wouldn’t even consider it and you’d just say no.”

“Well…” Kanan let out a sigh. She wasn’t sure why Chika was so persistent… but it wasn’t like she was wrong, either. “Maybe. But really, what does it matter? You just wanted to… get closer to Riko, was it? You want to get close in that way, then?”

“E-Eheh… Yeah… I thought you were dating Mari, and I figured you’d have been the one to ask her out, so I thought I’d get some advice from you. But I guess not… I mean, that’s okay, though! No biggie, heh…”

“Why don’t you just… ask her?”

“H-Huh?”

“Ask her out.”

Oho, was Chika blushing? That was new. She didn’t often get embarrassed or flustered-- certainly not talking about romance. Although come to think of it, as far as Kanan knew, this could’ve very well been Chika’s first time having a crush on someone…

“I-- I don’t know… I mean, it’s not that easy! I wanted to talk to her about it, but I get all nervous and stuff… and besides, what if she doesn’t like me like that? She might feel all awkward around me, and I don’t want that…”

“You still asked me for advice on asking her out, though…”

“Well, yeah… I’m nervous and kinda scared, but if I’m always like that with people I like, I might never get anywhere.”

It was a fair point. Honestly, Kanan hasn’t expected that Chika would put so much thought into such a matter.

Or any at all, like with many of the things she did and said. Chika was somewhat like Mari in that regard… Although both of them, Kanan had found lately, did think about their actions a lot more than they’d initially let on.

“Well… I’m not sure what advice you could even be given, really. I guess if you want to make sure it goes as well as it can… practice it? Sort of like practicing a speech or a presentation for school. You’d be more confident when you know what you’re going to say and how you’re going to say it.”

“Huh… That’s actually pretty good advice, Kanan.”

“You think?” The suggestion was really just the first thing she’d thought of, but if Chika was happy with it, she’d take it. “Does that mean we can go back to studying now?”

“Wait, um…” Again, Chika bashfully poked her fingers together, apparently hesitant. “...Can you help me practice?”

“...Practice asking Riko out?”

Chika nodded.

“Can’t you ask someone else? I’m sure You would be happy to help.”

“Um… For some reason, You doesn’t seem to like when I gush about Riko and stuff. I think it makes her uncomfortable. I don’t think asking her would be a good idea-- but I guess I could ask Mari, maybe...”

“I-- I’ll help. But it’s going to be after we finish studying, okay?”

“You’re the best, Kanan!”

The two barely got anything done because Chika’s normally bad attention span seemed to be even further weakened by her mind being stuck on the whole Riko thing. Because of that, they ended the session earlier than intended. Kanan really hoped they could get this over with soon… not only so that Chika would stop worrying so much, but so that her grades didn’t suffer from an innocent crush.

“Okay, you be Riko.” The two sat outside the diving shop, Kanan drinking a grape soda and Chika a peach tea. Kanan still wasn’t sure about this whole “practice” thing, but she did want to at least try and help her friend.

“Alright, I’m Riko then. Hey Chika?”

“Hm?”

“Have you finished those lyrics I asked you to work on?”

That got Chika flustered. “N-- No, not like that, Kanan! Geez… You can be such a meanie sometimes.”

“I’ll take that as a no,” Kanan replied with a chuckle.

“A-Anyways, let’s start over. I’m gonna go first, okay?”

“Fire away.”

“...”

“...”

“...”

Kanan quietly cleared her throat.

“H-- Heeyyy, Riko…”

“Um…”

“I-- I felt put on the spot, okay!?”

At the outburst and at Chika’s silly pouting, Kanan laughed. “Just relax, will you? If you talk to her like that, she’s going to think something’s wrong.”

“I know, I know… Ahem. Okay, so-- Hey Riko, wanna go out!?”

“T-Talk about straightforward…”

“Ehh? Is that no good either?”

“Man…” Chika really didn’t know what she was doing, did she? Not that Kanan had been expecting her to. “I’m not sure… but I don’t know how receptive someone like Riko would be to suddenly being asked that…”

“Um… Then…” Chika thought. For about two seconds, then she had a brilliant idea… or so Kanan guessed from her expressions, anyways. “Show me!”

“How to ask her out?”

A nod. “Yeah! I’ll be Riko. Or I guess Mari?”

“R-- Riko is fine. Different people respond better to different approaches, anyways.” She doubted that Riko and Mari had many of the same interests in that regard. “As for what she would like… I sort of have an idea, maybe… Chika, do you mind standing up?”

“Hm? Oh yeah, sure.” With an inelegant scrape of her chair against the floor, she stood.

The next thing Chika knew, her back was against the wall of the shop, Kanan bracing an arm against said wall and leaning in… really closely.

Whoa. 

“Hey Riko, have you ever thought about the two of us being… a bit more than just friends?”

“...K-Kanan, I--”

The two heard a thud nearby, and so their heads automatically turned to the source of the noise…

Only for them to see Mari and Riko kissing rather intensely right by the shop.

It turns out, he doesn’t do a very good job of finishing his homework at the dorm now that he lives with Andrew and Kevin. Between talking exy with Kevin, and hanging out with Andrew (more of the latter obviously), he had too many distractions. The best way to get shit done is to come to the library where the other Foxes rarely come (except for Aaron but they aren’t really friends yet, although not for lack of trying, they just didn’t click), so he’s safe from distractions.

But this time he can’t focus, not with the two guys a few tables to his right, talking softly amongst themselves and giggling and nervously looking Neil’s way.

“Yoshiko-chan!”

“Mm?” Yoshiko turned as a familiar voice called for her attention, deciding not to correct the other girl as she was simply happy to see her before heading to class. “Riri! Good morning!” She greeted with a grin.

“You seem more awake this morning.” Riko commented upon catching up with the second year.

“Oh yeah… uhm… about that…” Yoshiko sighed “our internet went out halfway through my stream last night, so I ended up turning in early.”

“Oh dear, that’s too bad.” Riko replied with an empathetic smile. “But at least you’re better rested, and you left yourself time to secure your bun properly. Although…” She furrowed her brow as her gaze dropped a bit “your bow is crooked.”

“It is?”

“Yeah, here, let me get it for you.”

“R-Riri?” Yoshiko questioned as Riko’s hands moved below her neck and deftly adjusted school uniform accessory.

“There we go.” Riko patted the knot gently. “Ohmigosh I’m sorry.” Red spread across her face as she realized where she had placed her hand, and she quickly withdrew it.

“I-It’s fine…” Yoshiko responded, wondering how badly she herself was blushing. “Thanks.”

“Riko-cha~n!” a voice called from nearby. “You’re going to be late!”

“Coming, Chika-chan!” Riko called back before returning her attention to the girl beside her. “See you at lunch, Yoshiko-chan.”

“Right, see you then.” Yoshiko responded.

Riko flashed one more smile before sprinting off to join Chika and You.

“Fwaaah…” Yoshiko yawned.

“Another late night of streaming?” Riko inquired, concern obvious in her tone.

“Mm… I had to make up for ending things early the other night.”

“But that wasn’t your fault.”

“Riri,” Yoshiko intoned, “as one of Yohane’s most elite little demons, you should know by now that with the cursed luck Heaven hath bestowed upon this fallen angel, such things shall always be my fa… geh?” She cut off as she felt a swat atop her head; not hard enough to hurt, but certainly enough to get her attention.

“Blame Heaven all you want, but you know I don’t like it when you blame yourself for such things.” Riko stated decisively.

“Right, sorry Riri.” Yoshiko apologized, letting herself rise out of Yohane’s vocal range. “But anyway, even though I was in a rush this morning, I made sure to double check my bun and sash.”

“I noticed that.” Riko giggled. “Good work, Yoshiko-chan. However…”

“Eh? Wha’d I miss this time?”

“One of your stockings is slouching.” Riko said before stooping. “Let me get…”

“Heee?!” Yoshiko squeaked as a strange sensation skittered up her spine.

“Geh, I did it again…” Riko said as she stood back up, pink already dusting her cheeks. “I’m sorry, Yoshiko-chan, I really didn’t mean…”

“It’s fine, you just startled me is all.” Yoshiko said before thinking better of it.

Had she really only been startled or had there been something… No. She had decided she wasn’t going to feel that way about Riko and just focus on enjoying their growing friendship. Still, Yoshiko couldn’t deny that it very much seemed like Riko was paying more attention to her than usual. Riko was even going so far as to seek out Yoshiko during their walk from the station to school, despite taking the same bus as Chika.

But was that all really such a bad thing? It wasn’t like Yoshiko didn’t enjoy the newly increased attention. Perhaps, maybe… No. No. Stop. Yoshiko shook her head as though doing so would help shake away the thoughts she knew were coming.

“Yoshiko-chan?”

Yoshiko blinked back to reality. “Sorry, Riri, I was just thinking about… stuff.”

“Like what rituals you might perform later tonight?”

“What? No.” Yoshiko crossed her arms defiantly. “I’ll have you know that not everything a fallen angel thinks about is rituals.”

Riko laughed lightly. “I suppose. But do let me know the next time you want to perform one and I’ll try to be free for it.”

“Fufu. As expected of Yohane’s elite little demon, Riri.” Yoshiko managed to intone, despite her excitement over the fact that this was the first time Riko had been the one to offer to participate in a ritual, instead of being invited.

“Anyway, see you at lunch, Yoshiko-chan.” Riko said, before turning toward the third-year classrooms.

“Of course.”

“Convenience store bento again today, Yoshiko-chan?” Hanamaru asked as the three second-years sat at their usual table, across from the third-years.

“Papa let me have it since I didn’t leave myself enough time to make one myself.” Yoshiko explained with a shrug.

“Doesn’t your mother usually make your lunches for you?” Riko inquired.

“Yeah, but she’s been on a business trip all week.”

“Hmm, well perhaps then I could make bentos for you?”

“Eh? Really?” Yoshiko perked up at the unexpected offer.

“Yoshiko-chan’s sure being doted on.” Hanamaru teased, earning a growl of protest from the girl beside her.

“Just until her mother gets back.” Riko insisted, blushing despite not being the intended target of the teasing, but caught by the splash damage, nonetheless.

“Aww, no fair.” Chika whined. “I wanna eat Riko-chan’s homemade bentos too.”

“I’d be fine making one for you as well, Chika-chan.” Riko said before leaning back to look past the orange-haired girl. “Would you also like one, You-chan?”

“If Riko-chan’s offering, sure.” You accepted. “Then I’ll get you back after.”

Chika sighed. “You-chan’s homemade bento…”

You laughed. “Yeah, yeah, I’ll be sure to make one for you as well, Chika-chan. And Yoshiko-chan too. In fact, I can just make them for everyone.”

“I’ll take a turn after that.” Ruby offered.

“Then me, zura.” Hanamaru added.

“I make some too.” Yoshiko threw in.

“Just go easy on the Tabasco.” Hanamaru’s teasing tone returned.

“Pigi!” Ruby flinched at the mention of overly spiced food made by her fellow second-year.

“It will be good!” Yoshiko insisted. “In fact, Yohane’s will be the best!” She proclaimed, though immediately realized Riko’s would probably be better, at least as far as she was concerned.

The other five girls had a laugh at the proud proclamation before their usual lunch chatter resumed.

“Kyaa!” Yoshiko cried, turning away from the spraying soda.

“I got it.”

A cloth began to dab at Yoshiko’s face.

“Wow, Riko-chan,” Yoshiko heard Chika’s voice “that was quick.”

Yoshiko opened her eyes once Riko had finished drying her face and had moved on to her hair. Chika, You, Hanamaru and Ruby were all looking at either her or Riko in mild surprise. She opened her mouth to say something, but…

“Oh dear,” Riko said, “your bun is soaked, Yoshiko-chan. It will get sticky if we don’t clean it properly. C’mon, let’s get you to the bathroom.”

“I’ll help.” Ruby offered.

“Thanks Ruby-chan, but I can take care of this.” Riko assured as she helped Yoshiko to her feet. “You guys go ahead and keep eating.”

“We’ll watch your food so no critters steal it, zura.” Hanamaru said.

Under different circumstances, Yoshiko might have quipped that she was more worried about Hanamaru eating her food than some random squirrel or the like. However, at that moment she just wanted to get her hair cleaned quickly so she could finish before their break was over. After all, it would be a shame to let Riko’s delicious cooking go to waste.

“You don’t have to waste your lunch time as well, Riri.” Yoshiko said as the two made their way toward the restroom.

“It will go quicker with another set of hands.” Riko insisted. “Let’s see, paper towels, warm water…” She started getting things ready.

“Riri acts like this is the first time Yohane has had to wash something out of her hair.” Yoshiko couldn’t help laughing a little.

“I know, I just…” Riko paused in the middle of undoing Yoshiko’s bun. “I… I know Yoshiko-chan has been dealing with her bad luck for years, but lately, I can’t help worrying and I…” She met Yoshiko’s gaze in the mirror. “Would you prefer I stop?”

Yoshiko felt warmth spread through her chest. “No.” She resisted the urge to shake her head so as to avoid pulling her hair out of the other girl’s hands. “And I’m sorry if I gave you that impression. Actually, knowing someone as wonderful as Riri is looking out for me and trying to counteract some of my cursed luck makes me quite happy.” She smiled. “It’s almost like I have my own guardian angel or something. Thanks, Riri.”

A beautiful blush blossomed across the redhead’s face. “Y-you’re welcome…” She forced out before turning her attention back to the blue strands with which she was working.

A mostly comfortable quiet settled between the two as Riko continued to work, leaving little for Yoshiko to do herself other than just watch in the mirror. However, after about a minute, Riko began to hum.

“Ne, Riri.” Yoshiko said after listening for a couple minutes.

“Mm?”

“Is that the same song you were humming the other day when you fixed my bun?”

“Probably. I’ve been humming it a lot lately.”

“I’m not sure I recognize it. Is it a new one you’re writing?”

Riko smiled. “Yeah, it is.”

“It sounds nice. I like it.”

Riko’s smile grew. “Although I’m not sure who I want to have sing it yet, our whole group, our subgroup or if I should sing it myself as a solo.”

“Yohane wouldn’t mind lending her voice to such a lovely tune.”

“Well perhaps Chika-chan and I can turn it into a duet for us.”

“For Riri and Chika?”

“No, silly,” Riko chuckled “for Yoshiko-chan and me.”

“Oh, uhm… I’d like that.”

“A duet it is then.” Riko smiled again. “Oh, and I’m done here.” She patted the bun she had just secured in Yoshiko’s hair. “Shall we head back to finish lunch?”

“Alright.” Yoshiko agreed and followed her senior out of the restroom.

As they made their way back, Yoshiko remembered Hanamaru’s teasing as well as her own thoughts on the topic as of late. Perhaps she didn’t need to delve too deeply into why Riko was insisting on doting on her so much. After all, Riko had just explained it; she was worried about Yoshiko’s wellbeing. And Yoshiko hadn’t been lying when she said it was nice. Perhaps she should just leave things at that and enjoy being spoiled a little.

“Let’s see, bun intact, bow straight, stockings up properly…”

“Riri doesn’t really have to inspect me every single morning, you know…”

“Apparently, I do.”

“Eh? But I thought I…”

“Your buttons are off.”

“My wh…” Yoshiko cutoff as Riko began undoing the buttons of her blazer so she could reach the blouse under it. “R-Riri?”

Just what the heck was Riko doing? Sure, they were at least within the school, not outside, but they were still in the hallway where any other student could see. Thankfully, Riko redid the buttons as she went instead of undoing them all before realigning them. But still…

“There we go. All good.” Riko said rebuttoning Yoshiko’s blazer.

What? No blush? No embarrassment? Was Riko already used to doing these things?

“See you at lunch, Yoshiko-chan!”

“R-Right…” Yoshiko’s response was delayed, and as such delivered to Riko’s back.

Sure, Yoshiko had decided she would sit back and enjoy Riko spoiling her in ways like making bentos for lunch, even if she was making them for everyone else as well. And even if Yoshiko intended to return the favor at some point. Sure, Yoshiko very much enjoyed when Riko worked with her hair, even entertaining the idea of occasionally messing up her bun just so Riko could fix it. But her buttons, bow and stockings? As embarrassing at it was, she couldn’t deny that part of her kind of liked it. And that could cause problems if she was to stick with her plans regarding Riko.

As Yoshiko made her way toward her homeroom class, she decided she needed to be more vigilant about her clothes, or her heart may not survive her second year of high school.

Author’s Note Continued: I know I’ve mentioned that I have a strong headcanon that my flagship redheads all have some sort of obsession or adoration or whatever concerning hair. Maki canonically plays with her own hair regularly, and I’ve extended that desire to Nico’s hair in my works. Ayumu takes the lead when it comes to styling her fellow idols’ hair before events, and somehow always manages to ensure she is the one to work with Setsuna’s hair. She also happily dries and/or brushes Yuu and Setsuna’s hair when they have sleepovers, and of course does so more often once the trio is together. And she is the head of the hair and makeup department in the Sonoda Kurosawa Theater in my monster AU.

But I really haven’t done much with Riko in this regard. Thus, this chapter can serve as one, of hopefully more to come, instances of Riko working with Yohane’s hair in some way.

Also, I know the SIFAS Daily Theare entry technically takes place with Yohane as a first year and Riko as a second year, but that is in the SIFAS continuity where µ’s, Aqours and the Nijigasaki idol club coexist at the same time. Happy Life takes place in the anime continuity, so I’ve decided to move it over a year so it fits better with the timeline I have planned for the girls.

As for Yohane’s ribbon and blazer, I went with what I believe to be the second year style depicted in the Sunshine movie at their new school. I also figure she retains her thigh high stockings even after transferring.

As for Riko’s uniform, it would likely be similar to Yohane’s. Skimming through the SS movie, I was unable to readily locate a depiction of the third year ribbon or sash style, but Otonokizaka, Uranohoshi and Nijigasaki all use green, so Numazu probably does as well.

And finally, as for Riko humming while working with Yohane’s hair, that was an idea inspired by a pic that showed up on my twitter timeline shortly after the Daily Theatre entry. And I’m probably going to keep that as canon for HL, that when Riko works with Yohane’s hair, she can’t help humming happily to herself.

Edit: I tried to remove the hyperlink from the text of the two links to twitter, to give credit to the sources of my inspiration while not getting this post banned from appearing in tag searches, but tumblr decided to add them back in automatically. So I guess I have to decide between crediting my inspiration and being able to have my work actually be found by those not following me. And I’m going to go with crediting my inspiration.

Frankly, tumblr keeps making itself more and more unfriendly to fanfic authors, which often makes me wonder why I still bother posting my stuff here, so much so that I’ve long since stopped tracking my index master posts. But AO3 is awesome, and I will continue using it for the foreseeable future, so go read my stuff there. The formatting is better there anyway; they haven’t gotten rid of the line break as far as I can tell.

The Wedding Part 5: The Conflict

Ryuu: *in rage mode, being held back by Riko and Hiroko* LET ME GO, DAMMIT, LET ME GO!

Riko: NO! Agh, where are they?!

Hiroko: Tsunoda said they are on their way! But man, they better hurry-WHOA! *the two girls are suddenly launched in the air, and land flat on the floor!* ….ow.

Ryuu: GAAAAAAGH! *runs off, to wreck more stuff*

Hiroko: This is not good…*sees the engaged couple, the parents, Ikari, and Fenneko running in, with Tsunoda* Retsuko! Bro! Um...yeah, this PROBABLY doesn’t look great.

Retsuko: What happened here?!

Riko: I-I don’t know! He was fine one second, and then he just snapped!

Tsunoda: He’s ruining everything!

Retsuko: Come on! If we can catch him, we can probably cool him down! *Riko points to the direction of her brother, and Retsuko follows after him* Ryuu!

Ryuu: *overseeing the chapel, before turning his head towards Retsuko, growling* WHAT?!

Retsuko: H-hey! It’s okay! What’s the matter?

Ryuu: YOU, THAT’S WHAT!

Retsuko: Wha-calm down! Why are you acti-*sees Ikari crawling towards him* H-honey, no!

Ikari: Bwabwa? *looking at Ryuu*

Ryuu: ….GET HIM AWAY.

Retsuko: Ikari, get back! C’mon!

Ikari: Eyeh? *reaching towards Ryuu*

Ryuu: FUCK OFF! *SLAPS Ikari!*

Retsuko: *GASP!*

Ikari: ....*sniff*...*whimpers*....waaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!! *starts crying loudly*

Retsuko: …*looks at Ryuu* You. Are. DEAD! *goes into her rage, and pounces at Ryuu, knocking over several tables!*

Ryuu: AGH! DAMN YOU! *throws Retsuko through a door outside!* URGH… *follows her*

Retsuko: *coughs* WHY YOU-! *the two grab each other by the wrists, as she begins swinging him around*

Both Retsuko and Ryuu: RRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHH! *the two violently pull on each other, until she lets go, and sends Ryuu flying and crashing into the wedding cake, falling to the ground!*

Retsuko: *pants*.....*turns back to normal, but still very angry*

Tsunoda: *running out, with everyone following suit* *GASP!* *runs towards Retsuko* Retsy, what did you do?! Why is the cake ruined?! At this rate, your wedding will just be a disaster! Heck, it already is!

Retsuko: I don’t care. *storms her way towards her cake-smothered brother, and yanks him up* You done? >:(

Ryuu: ...I think so. *shoves her off, and begins walking away*

Retsuko: Wha-what is wrong with you?! *trying to follow him, with Ryota following suit*

Ryuu: *while walking* Like I said, you! I didn’t want to be a part of this, all because of you!

Retsuko: Well, if you could explain why, maybe I could understand!

Ryuu: What the hell could I say that could possibly make ANY of you understand?! You even got dad on this whole joke! DAD! I expected better of him!

Ryota: EXCUSE ME?! Expected better?!

Ryuu: Yeah! Instead you’re on HER side! You both make me sick!

Retsuko: Well, you know what, you can just be off the wedding! You don’t want to be in it? FINE!

Ryuu: *stops, and turns around* Oh, yeah? Wonderful. *gets up close to Retsuko* I’d hate to see the wedding of a monster like YOU.

Retsuko: ….w-what?

Ryuu: You heard me, MURDERER. I HATE YOU! *storms off*

Retsuko: …..w…..I…..*tears begin to swell up*

Ryota: R-Retsuko, it’s okay! He’s just being a brat, we’ll get over i-

Retsuko: That’s not it, dad! I...that’s my brother! My own little brother said he hated me! That I’m a murderer! Which I am! I….*runs back*

Ryota: Retsuko!

Retsuko: *runs into Haida, and buries her face in his suit, crying*

Ikari: *in his father’s arms, rubbing his own cheek* ...mama?

*later that night…*

Fenneko: *checking her phone* ...this is NOT good.

Tsunoda: Uh, understatement of the century much?! That brute messed up a bunch of the decorations! At this rate, their wedding will be an absolute trainwreck!

Fenneko: No, actually, at this rate, there won’t even BE a wedding.

Tsunoda: Yeah, exa-....what do you mean?

Fenneko: Take a look. *hands Tsunoda her phone revealing texts from Haida*

Text #1: Fenneko please help

Text #2: without Ryuu Retsukos going insane

Text #3: she doesn’t want the wedding if everyone isn’t there

Text #4: I think shes gonna call the whole thing off

Text #5: Im trying my best but she wont budge

Text #6: Please Help I’m getting desperate…….

Tsunoda: …..oh, no.

Fenneko: I called up Retsuko. Apparently that whole fight left her somewhat jaded about the event. If we somehow got Ryuu to change his mind, that may get this thing back on track.

Tsunoda: Well, we don’t even know where he is!

Fenneko: We do. I got word he was staying with some friends in town.

Tsunoda: ….he has friends?

Fenneko: Shocking, I know. But he probably wouldn’t respond to Retsuko.

Tsunoda: ...Haida, maybe?

Fenneko: ...well, he probably doesn’t have as much resentment towards him. I reckon he would just be more annoyed with him than anything. Which, granted, is a natural reaction towards being around Haida. :3

Tsunoda: Mhmhm! ...you know, when I was younger, my father used to take people he got into fights with out to fish. His philosophy was that fishing was so relaxing, tensions can be relieved by the end of the fishing trip.

Fenneko: ...huh. That...might actually work. Get the two dweebs on a boat, there’s a body of water that we can use, get them to relax, maybe chat about this, it’s a win-win! We get a mic on them, we can get info to Retsuko, and she might not be so down! Hot damn, Tsunoda, that’s some smart thinking of ya!

Tsunoda: O-oh! Thank you! You have his address, right? I doubt he’ll be willing to do this.

Fenneko: Oh, I have it. I’ll convince his friends to get him while he’s sleeping. You let Haida know about the plan, and we’ll get this plan going.

Tsunoda: Got it~! *pecks Fenneko on the cheek, and runs off….causing the fennec fox to blush a little*

I take too long on these things, I swear...but um, yeah! Part 5 is done, finally. Part 6 PROBABLY shouldn’t take as long as this, or any of the previous parts. I’ll try to crank that out soon. I gotta babysit this coming Monday, and Tuesday, so I might try to work on it throughout tomorrow (at the time I’m writing this), and the days afterward. Again, this is just going by time judging. I cannot confirm anything. I CAN confirm that Part 7 is already done.....yeah, don’t ask. Until next time!

Chika ran away.

Riko and Mari kissing like that… Chika was sure it was just a misunderstanding of some kind. Maybe…

Well, she supposed she wasn’t completely sure.

“Chika, wait up!”

She should have at least stayed long enough to find out, but her body had moved on its own. She just… couldn’t be there any longer.

Maybe it also had something to do with the watery state of her eyes. A few stray tears escaped as she ran, but she ignored them the best she could.

“Chi-kaa! I’m not-- as good at running a-as you…!”

There really was no sense in crying over this. It wasn’t like Riko was hers or--

A forceful thumping noise and a girly cry snapped Chika out of her thoughts, and she began to slow down, coming to a full stop as she looked behind her shoulder. That voice was…

“R-- Riko! Are you okay!?” Other worries thrown to the side as concern for Riko’s well-being replaced them, she rushed back to Riko’s side, kneeling down to make sure she wasn’t badly hurt. “G-Gah, this is my fault for running, I’m so sorry--”

“Huh? N-- No, no, it’s fine. I didn’t hurt myself that badly, and… Chika, are you okay?”

“Wh-What are you talking about? You’re the one who fell…” Chika blinked a few times to get the blurry out of her eyes. “A-- Aren’t you bleeding? You must’ve hit the ground pretty hard…”

Riko frowned, and that alone made Chika want to run and hide away again already. She took Chika’s arm, keeping her still, and stared into her eyes. “...Aren’t you crying?”

“Eh? Th-- That’s… um…”

“Is it because of me and Mari?”

Chika stayed quiet. While it was true and she really did want to let Riko know how she felt, how could she when she was in a position like this? Although it was probably obvious by this point, meaning Riko found out in one of the most embarrassing and least romantic ways possible--

While Chika internally freaked the hell out, she barely noticed Riko sighing, crawling over to her, and pressing their lips together into a kiss. That part certainly got Chika’s attention.

It was a soft, pleasant kiss. It might be more pleasant if Chika didn’t taste her own tears, and she worried that Riko did too, but the other pulled away slowly and with a smile.

A nervous, awkward smile, but a smile nonetheless.

“I don’t really know why Mari did that, to be honest, but I can tell you there’s nothing between us. I think she just panicked when we saw you and Kanan…”

“Huh? Wh-What were we doing?”

“You didn’t notice? The way she had you against the wall was…” Riko’s cheeks flushed a rather pink color as she searched for the word to describe the scene. “...Suggestive?”

“R-- Really? Now that you mention it… I guess, a little…”

“I am a bit curious as to what you were actually doing, myself…”

Now it was Chika’s turn to blush. Given the girl in front of her was the reason she and Kanan were doing what they were doing, that would be pretty embarrassing to explain… but it wasn’t like there was much to hide after Riko literally just kissed her, was there? “...Kanan was helping me practice how to ask you out.”

Riko laughed. Chika only whined at that, really not having wanted that to be her reaction to the whole thing. “I-I’m sorry, I’m sorry! That’s… actually really cute. And sweet.”

Still rather flustered, but also feeling way too many gay feelings to put into words in that moment, Chika could only stare at Riko. Riko looked back at her, smiling, but that expression suddenly turned into a grimace. Chika realized they were still sitting on the ground.

“A-- Ah! Are you okay? I mean, you said you were, but…”

“Oh, I just scraped my knee is all…” Riko moved back a bit so her knee was no longer right up against the concrete, and Chika frowned. Despite Riko’s attempts to make it seem like it wasn’t a big deal, the scrape she referred to was a bloody mess. Riko, too, seemed to realize this upon actually looking at it, and nervously averted her gaze from the wound.

So Chika did the obvious thing one would do. She slid her arms underneath Riko’s legs and back and stood, lifting her up. Riko let out a startled squeak, but Chika had already started walking.

“We’re not that far from home, so I’ll carry you the rest of the way.”

“Wh-What? You really don’t need to do that… and besides, I’m not done talking to you.”

“Mm? I didn’t say I was taking you to your home.” 

Riko gave a stutter in response before going quiet, then leaning on Chika. That brought a smile to Chika’s face, and she chuckled.

The rest of the walk was peaceful and quiet.

Well, until they arrived at Chika’s place and Shiitake started barking, causing Riko to let out an “eep” and latch even more closely to Chika. She may have been getting more used to dogs as of late, but she still wasn’t the best with barking…

Lucky for her, her orange savior protected her the whole way to Chika’s bathroom, even when one of Chika’s sisters spotted them and made a snide remark, to which Chika only responded with a roll of the eyes.

“Here you go!” Riko was sat down on the counter as Chika grabbed some things to clean up the wound. “Sorry about Mito-nee. She likes--”

“Embarrassing you, I know. She’s done it before.” Riko laughs at the simple pout she gets in response.

Chika sighs and gets to fixing up Riko’s knee. So, Riko kissed her. That was great-- fantastic, even. Chika wanted her to do it again. Or maybe for her to kiss Riko, instead. Either would work? Should she just do it? No, they should probably discuss this first. But… discuss what? Their relationship? Wasn’t there something already implied there when Riko kissed her? She must have done it because she liked Chika, right? She couldn’t think of any other explanation, but even so…

“Chika?”

She blinked. While she was lost in her thoughts, Riko’s knee was bandaged and everything before she knew it. She’d just sort of been staring. Again.

“Sorry,” Chika mumbled.

“Hmm… What are you thinking about?”

“Kissing you.”

“O-- Oh.” Crap. She didn’t mean to say that. “...Did you want to do that again?” owo?????

“Y-Yeah! I do! But…”

“But?”

Chika poked her fingers together. Her crush didn’t quite seem to see the issue here… “Um… Well, first… Riko, can you walk?”

“Eh? Yes, I’m not hurting much anymore. Why-- eep--?”

Chika took Riko’s hand and pulled her out of the bathroom and to her bedroom, then turned towards Riko and took her other hand as well.

“Um, so, Riko… I like you! N-No, no, I-- I love you!” She tried to say it as firmly as she could, and she grinned upon seeing the recognition in Riko’s face. “Wanna go out?”

Instead of saying anything, Riko pulled her hands away from Chika’s and stepped forward, putting them instead on Chika’s shoulders as she kissed her once again.

“Mmph! Riko, that’s not fair!”

Riko giggled. “What isn’t fair?”

“I said it, so you should too…”

“Oh, should I? And here I recall telling you I loved you quite some time ago… or did you forget?” She smirked as Chika’s face turned bright red, and the poor girl scrambled for a response.

“Wh-Wha-- I mean, no, but--”

“I’m just teasing, Chika. I love you. And yes, I will go out with you, so will you kiss me already?”

“...! Yes ma’am!”

Riko laughed against Chika’s lips as she had her fourth kiss ever, and Chika wondered what she ever did to deserve for such a cute, pretty, positively shining miracle to walk into her life.

Idk if y’all do this but I don’t know who to ask but your favorite aftg SPOTIFY playlists? I like the “Andrew in clubs” by rb and the “andriel/AFTG” by sunellix but so far my favorite has been “untitled 1” by palmettofoxden because they made a tumblr post that went with it and I loved how they included the reason to each song. If you’re unfamiliar with Red Rabbits then you’ve probably been living under a rock. From the very beginning the team behind this true crime themed fic have been excellent at providing a playlist for the characters, for the story, and for the highly interactive blog that can also be found here. If you’re looking for explanations as to why some songs are on the lists, check out the Tumblr asks and read the fic - there are many layers to this one but you can discover a lot in both Seasons. 

TFN by The Foxhole (2019) - Short and sweet (just like our favourite characters) this is a great list and sits perfectly alongside Season 1. 

TFN Minyard by The Foxhole (2019) - Africa is really the only song you need to listen to on this playlist but this is the list designed to represent Andrew in Red Rabbits. Sit back, listen, appreciate how very very well done this list is: emo bangers sit against indie bops, Lykke Li and MISSIO clash against Explosions in the Sky and Pink Floyd.  

TFN Seth by The Foxhole (2019) - Oh Seth, our sweet baby DJ, whose journey is honestly one of the best in fanfic. Here you’ll find Childish Gambino, Jay Z and Kanye, City Girls and The Weeknd. 

TFN Dan by The Foxhole (2019) - What a queen, it’s Dan Wilds with a mix of Beyonce, Frank Ocean and many more r&b, hiphop and pop tunes. Upbeat and powerful.

Neil Josten’s Music + Mathematics / The Calculus of Nocturnes by fuzzballsheltiepants [Rated M; 7863 words; Complete 2020] (recced here)

Like everything by fuzzballsheltiepants, this playlist is as well thought out and perfectly rendered as the story itself. The fic centers around Neil Josten, a high school math teacher with a secret obsession: the classical piano he hears music teacher Andrew Minyard playing every afternoon. Eventually his secret is found out, and his world begins to open up. This playlist can be listened to along with the fic, giving you an immersive layer to the story. 

Slinging Mozart Sideways / Slinging Mozart Sideways  by justadreamfox [Rated T; 9962 words, Complete 2020]  (recced here)

Some fun facts about this one - firstly, the working title was “gay pianists need to eat” (which I love) and secondly it was part of the 2020 Gift Exchange for Willow_Bird. Excellent fic. Excellent prompt. In which Andrew is in the music business, Neil is a classical cellist (with a British accent) and they bond over Nils Fram. It’s super pretty and the classical music choices are sweet, subtle and sometimes heartwrenching. 

One writer in particular, scribbleb_red, has been prolific in creating playlists for all their longer fics, and some of their Twitter hc fics.  There’s overlap in themes and genres across most of them but here are some of my faves:

Playlist: L'amour parle en fleurs / l’amour parle en fleur by scribbleb_red [Rated M, 61919 words, Complete 2019] (recced here)

Also known as The Lavender AU, this fic is set in the lavender fields of Provence in Southern France and deals with loss and recovery, grief and hope - and that’s exactly what the playlist lays out as well. Intended to accompany the reader through the fic, this playlist is a journey just like the story itself. 

Playlist: (don’t fear) the reaper / (don’t fear) the reaper by scribbleb_red [Rated M, 73111 words, Complete 2019] (recced here) 

for the fic of the same name, in which Andrew and Neil don’t meet in life but in limbo. Andrew is a grim reaper and Neil is the soul he’s meant to be helping cross to the other side. There’s just one issue: Neil isn’t really dead.

In which Neil is the monster hiding Andrew’s bed and this changes everything.

not your homeland anymore (2020) for the fic of the same name, inspired by Taylor Swift’s folklore, this angsty fic is still being written and asks the question: what if Andrew hadn’t been there after Baltimore?

Playlists Based on Characters 

Oh yes, there are some highly creative folks out there exploring their headcanons via the spotify playlist. Here are five of our favourites: 

THE FOXES DEADLIEST INVESTMENT by realpeachy (2019) - Their ain’t no rest for the wicked and this playlist is as relentless, beat-heavy and secretly instigative as Andrew Minyard himself. Some familiar themes with Billie Eilish, Ruelle, Halsey and the like, but some quirky additions like badflower and tedy as well. 

NEIL JOSTEN by Arizona Kestler (2019) - A curious collection of songs on this one, ranging from Kendrick Lamar to Radiohead, AJR to Jack’s Mannequin. It definitely leans into the new-wave emo that many associate with AFTG but it always comes back to the high octane energy we associate with our favourite starting striker. 

yes or no? by jmoriartty (2018) - Could there be a more iconic playlist for andreil? well ok, maybe that’s just this contributor’s taste but having been steadily built through 2018 to 2019, it’s one of the most followed playlists on spotify for AFTG. Two Feet, MISSIO, Twenty One Pilots and grandson are all big hits on this bluesy, gritty, alternative playlist. 

you can call me king by scribbleb_red (2019) - As if any list was complete without a villainous inclusion, like with most of scribble’s lists this one deliberately lays out a journey for Riko Moriyama, his rise and fall. Maybe you’ll also feel Sympathy for the Devil. 

Double Trouble by an.fouda (2019) - Yes, it’s a twinyards playlist and it’s full of absolutely exquisite artist choices and emo hits. Try listening to Night Knuckles by Cavetown or Plastic Joy by Raw Fabrics. It’s a whole new level to this most complex of sibling relationships. 

Playlists Based on the Books 

Some of these are classics - they’ve set the tone for AFTG playlists all over the internets - and it’s fascinating to see how even now people come back to similar tones: alternative rock, grunge, hiphop, the high energy songs that mix a sense of hope and fear and danger. Plug in your headphones and prepare for a ride. Others are more recent and you can very much see how the themes of the music line up over time. “I’m telling you, Riri, she was so~ cute!” Yoshiko was describing a stray cat she had come across on the way home and managed to find a new owner shortly thereafter. “Fur as dark as the deepest of nights. Golden eyes that shown like twin moons of another world. Teeth that glistened like ceremonial bone daggers.”

Riko couldn’t help thinking that pretty much described Phobetor, currently sitting in Yoshiko’s lap. The main difference being Phobetor’s one emerald eye.

“And I came up with the perfect name for her too, Mayonaka!” Yoshiko continued. “I do hope her new owner takes it into consideration. It’s such a cute name for a cute little kitty… hey! Wha? Phobetor?”

Riko watched as the current cat of the apartment swatted at her girlfriend’s hand as she tried to pet him. Then, Phoboter stood, turned, and with tail held high, trotted over to Riko before climbing into her lap.

“I think you made him jealous, Yocchan.” Riko commented.

“Phobeto~r!” Yoshiko whined. “I wasn’t trying to imply that I would have Mayonaka replace you! I was saying I’d have her in addition to you!”

Phobetor responded by kneading a couple times into Riko’s leg before curling up between her and Prelude, who had already been on her lap.

“Yohane can’t be the only one who thinks having a third pet would be a good idea, right Riri?”

“Hrm…” Riko considered. “I think sometimes it feels like Yocchan is already my third pet.”

“Wha?” Yoshiko balked. “Yohane is nobody’s pet! If anything, Riri is Yohane’s little demon.”

“I thought I was your angel?”

“Yes, right, angel…” Yoshiko shook her head. “Wait, why was Yohane Riri’s third pet?”

Riko laughed.

“Anyway, it’s not fair that Riri gets both Phobetor and Prelude.” Yoshiko groused. “Come over here, Prelude.” She coaxed, patting her lap. “C’mon, Prelude.”

The pug opened her eyes and watched Yoshiko for a moment. Then, she slowly got to her feet.

“That’s a good girl.” Yoshiko patted her lap again. “C’mon. C’mon over to Yohane.”

Prelude stepped closer to Riko and Phobetor before settling back down, curling herself around the smaller cat.

Yoshiko whined again. Riko laughed again. Yoshiko pouted adorably.

“Well, there may not be room left on my lap.” Riko decided to say. “But my shoulder is open.” She reached her arm toward her girlfriend.

Yoshiko hesitated.

“C’mon, Yocchan.” Riko prompted, mimicking her girlfriend’s former tone as she patted her shoulder with her other hand. “C’mon over to Riri.”

Finally, Yoshiko gave in and slid in next to Riko, leaning her head on her shoulder.

“That’s a good girl, Yocchan.” Riko cooed as she wrapped her arm around her girlfriend and patted her head.

“That’s all?” Yoshiko asked as Riko began to move her hand away.

Riko laughed again and resumed her headpats.

Author’s Note Continued: Mayonaka is actually the name of an OC in my unpublished D&D fic. She is the younger sister of Yozakura, real name Hakumei, who I have managed to bring into TA via a TTRPG Setsuna is running, where Ayumu plays her.

But the way I write Mayo has thus far relied heavily on first person narration as it grants me access to a particular style I learned from the Haruhi light novels that intentionally blurs the lines among Kyon’s internal and external monologue as well as the overall narration itself. And I’m just not sure I’m ready to try translating that over to a third person perspective. Especially when confined to 4k characters in a prompt event.

But I still love the name and couldn’t pass up using it somehow for the Midnight prompt. Thus, Yohane found another kitty. And Phobetor’s jealous.

Edit: If anyone is curious about how I write Mayo, I did translate her, Ryqo, Yoza, and a couple other of my D&D OCs into a LL style school idol setting a~ll the way down at the bottom of my Archive. They were the first posts I made this account, in fact. Lonely derelicts of a long past event on an LL fansite I unfortunately rarely visit these days.
