so ocean says every story has a lesson, calling on more conservative moral values ("teen sex *thrust* kills"). how would she feel when the moral of king henry iv part i is "honour is bullshit, you can only be a good leader if you reject traditional notions of chivalry"? bc the way that's branded doesn't go with how she appears (like that is what she somewhat obscured externally believes in but overall internally disagree with). but hey, that's not me, that's shakespeare!

James from Team Rocket is a truly complex character and very difficult to understand. At first glance, he appears confident and arrogant, but that's a role he plays as the "Team Rocket villain" and on stage, as explained in episodes DP 139: "A Faux Oak Finish" and DP 146: "Dressed for Jess Success!"
Tumblr media
In private, outside his Team Rocket role, he is calm, rather shy, he is very anxious and follows his teammates' ideas even when he doesn't fully agree with their plans.
In the episode "A Hole Lotta Trouble," Brock and Ash tell James that he must learn to assert himself without his teammates.
James had a childhood in the high aristocracy, where he could have anything material he wanted, but his parents gave him no affection, demeaned him, and forced him to follow strict and severe discipline like in the Victorian era. They also forced him into an arranged engagement with Jessiebelle, allowing her to train him with whips. He kept a deep trauma from this period of his life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He joined Team Rocket to rebel against the rules and proper conduct imposed on him in his childhood.
In an interview, the Japanese voice actors of Team Rocket: Megumi Hayashibara, Inuko Inuyama, and Miki Shinichiro, revealed that Jessie's goal in Team Rocket is to become rich or an important woman (which is why she dislikes Matori), Meowth also wishes to be important by taking the place of the boss's favorite Pokémon, replacing Persian. However, James's objective is solely to support and help his two friends achieve their goals and dreams, making them happy.
When James gains a little confidence in himself or engages in an activity he's passionate about and sure he can succeed, he becomes overly enthusiastic. However, he quickly falls into depression if he fails. An episode that shows this aspect of his personality is 'The Fortune Hunters' when James imagines himself as a powerful Moltres due to the description in a Pokemon horoscope book, which turns out to be false.
Tumblr media
He is also willing to wholeheartedly encourage people he admires, like Jessie during her Kalos contests or 'The Royal Mask' (under the pseudonym Fire-Kojiro, reminiscent of when he felt strong and proud like a Moltres).
Yet, when he has to put himself in the spotlight outside of Team Rocket missions, he feels terribly uncomfortable and automatically convinces himself that he will lose or isn't capable (The Battlefield of Truth and Love!, Dressed for Jess Success, Party Dancecapades)."
Tumblr media
Unlike Jessie, who thinks she's the best at everything, James has very low self-esteem and undervalues himself: believing for example others can take better care of his own Pokemon like Gardenia with Cacnea or Mareanie with her ex-boyfriend. He also thinks Jessie will be happier with Dr. White than with him in Team Rocket.
As demonstrated in episode 19 of "Pokémon Journeys" - A Talent for Imitation! Jessie is an excellent self-confidence coach, pushing her teammates and Pokémon to go beyond their limits and overcome their fears and apprehensions.
Jessie and Meowth are both invaluable support for James. Through their friendship and the trust they give him, he finally feels loved and respected for who he truly is. They are more than just friends; they are his family!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
James may appear naive and childish, often being very emotional and crybaby. Despite this, he excels in a lot of various fields, such as being an excellent technician, a talented actor, a poet, and well-informed about Pokemon… He's also skilled in computer science and hacking. On rare occasions when he's involved in a Pokemon battle or contest, he performs remarkably well.
When he forgot his fear under the effect of adrenaline to protect his Mareanie, he even demonstrated incredible strength!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though he is part of Team Rocket, James doesn't have a truly evil nature. In reality, he is a compassionate Pokemon trainer, loving his Pokemon so much that their affection hurts him physically, yet he always lets them show their love to him in this way. 💖

Please tell me your punk!Steve thoughts.
OH BOY I HAVE A LOT - besides what i’ll probably infodump abt here i have lowkey fleshed out an entire backstory for punk steve under the #punk steve au
(to summarize, steve decides to become a punk and rebel against his parents instead of doing what they want and being a jock)
he introduces punk culture to el and max and they adore it (el loves the pastel punk aesthetic)
he doesn’t use any of his parents money (but continues to live in their house bc he doesn’t really have anywhere else to go and doesn’t want to burden any of the multiple families that would take him in), is a lifeguard in the summer and takes odd jobs around fall and winter.
he goes to Indianapolis as often as possible and learns most of what he knows from Elder Punks he meets there. there’s a couple small punk/alt stores he always stops by and a few bars/clubs. everyone he meets loves him (and baby punks in general but they find it really cool that he comes from privilege yet decides to rebel against ideals that were made so he could succeed at the failure of others).
he’s also introduced to the queer community a lot earlier on, and realizes he’s mlm (i hc him as gay but i can also see him as bi) and there’s a bunch of Elder Gays who adopt him.
he’s pretty much the only punk in Hawkins, so he kinda gets a reputation. in his freshman year he mostly keeps to himself, doesn’t really dress the way he wants and just wants to make it through the year. sophomore year though, he befriends jonathan nancy and barb and starts dressing and acting the way he wants to. him and jonathan listen to music together and he helps out with will when joyce and jonathan need to work- which eventually leads to him meeting mike dustin and lucas and taking care of them too.
steve realizes he wants to be strong enough to protect the people he cares about, so him and jonathan train and work out together a bit. steve and nancy don’t date, but they’re best friends along with barb. i just need to see barb and steve as besties it would make me so happy. also nancy and barb are in love bc obviously.
halfway through sophomore year steve gets a job at the local mechanics (mechanic eddie this, mechanic eddie that, no! give me mechanic steve who has a special interest in cars! just look at his beemer! and like the sole decoration he has in his room is a photo of a car!)
SO. junior year. this is when he starts going to indianapolis a lot more frequently. he buys records and camera stuff for jonathan, and drawing supplies for will (he basically lives with the byers atp). he is a lot more sure of himself, wears combat boots and battle jackets, and is damn good at fighting (he worked really hard at it the summer before). if anyone harms the kids he will not hesitate to hit someone, and this becomes town-wide knowledge very quick.
when will disappears in november, steve is the first person joyce calls before karen. he joins the search parties, he goes to lonnie instead of jonathan (steve would rather die than make jonathan face his abuser again). basically he’s involved with the upside down shit from the start.
also, steve accidentally finds out about el when dustin and lucas do. he offers to have her stay at his house, mike is reluctant but agrees, and el immediately becomes steve’s new baby sister. steve still saves the day at the end of s1 with the demogorgon, but the fight with jonathan and all of that doesn’t happen.
i accidentally plotted the whole show with this au…
steve finds el s2 and actually fucking tells the Party instead of hiding it like hopper did. el just permanently lives at steve’s now.
oh yeah and barb doesn’t die so that’s a thing that changes s2 a lot. i lost track of where this was going so i’m gonna just drop hcs i have about punk steve
he paints his nails black, he has a few piercings, he doesn’t really like the feeling of makeup on his face but he puts on eyeliner occasionally, he lets his hair grow out more and has perfected the ‘messy bedhead that somehow looks good’ look, he has big combat books and uses lace code, he’s gay but says he would go straight for joan jett (me too tbh), he has a reputation of “don’t fuck with me or my kids” in Hawkins, he also lowkey converts robin into a punk but she’s more indie-alt like jonathan, he doesn’t play any instruments but has a great voice and perfect pitch, will and el help him make one of his favorite battle vests, will is very crafty and artistic so he helps steve with a lot of his stuff, he has a few tattoos, he can do cool lighter tricks lol, etc.

Can you tell us some headcanons for older!Chlogan? 👀
Awwww, Pom, your enthusiasm for rare pairs- your own and others- is just the best! So, Chlogan, the relationship between aged-up Chloe Barbash and Logan Bush...
I will admit, it first started as a joke that amused me on a couple of levels, the main ones being "wouldn't it be funny if Louise's nemeses got together?" and "Chlogan is a fun portmanteau ship name- her name flows right into his!"
But when @sailoreuterpe was doing the rare pair ask game last year, I asked her about Chlogan and she gave a thoughtful answer, which included this: "However, considering who Chloe and Logan are, it's just as likely that their parents hate each other for dumb wealthy WASP reasons. If that's the case, Chloe and Logan could very well date specifically to piss of their parents." That sort of inspired the most developed idea I have about the two of them getting together.
I imagine them knowing each other as kids (ie- at their current ages in the show and maybe even longer) because of their parents (who dislike each other) being in the same social circle. They do not get along either. They each find the other annoying- Chloe thinks Logan is gross, Logan thinks Chloe is a spoiled brat. At best case, they ignore each other, at the worst they fight.
However, as they get older, Chloe, to her chagrin, starts finding Logan attractive and thinking of him as a "cool bad boy"- at least, in the context of her privileged social circle. By the time Chloe graduates high school, she is really starting to chafe against her parents and their rules and their expectations- so she seeks Logan out to teach her how to be rebellious- and hoping to eventually get him to date her to annoy their parents (but that's not her only reason..)
Eventually, in romcom fashion, everything resolves as follows: 1. Chloe realizes Logan actually isn't much of a bad boy or rebel after all; 2. But by that point they actually just like each other anyway; 3. It turns out their parents don't actually care if they are together.
That's the main idea I have about the two of them. Here are some jokier alternatives (which could also incorporate the childhood/family animosity background):
-Rudy sets them up. I imagine this being when they are further in adulthood. Rudy and Louise are married; Louise is running the restaurant and Logan also has a store on Ocean Avenue (skateboards or something) and they've become friends (friends who annoy each other, but still). Rudy ends up reconnecting with Chloe (maybe interviewing her for some story he's doing for public radio) and comes up with the idea of setting Chloe and Logan up. Louise mocks him for it and everyone thinks its a bad idea (including Logan and Chloe) but it works out. This idea amuses me, but I doubt I'll do anything with it because it really says more about how I see older Rudy (a romantic who thinks everyone deserves happiness) rather than Logan or Chloe themselves.
-Rewatching "A Few 'Gurt Men" for my episode ranking rewatch led me to think (based on my experience as a lawyer) which "Bob's Burgers" kids would succeed in law school and the practice of law- and honestly Chloe and Logan were two of the top names on my list (along with Tammy- being a lawyer is not about being smart, it's about being confident). I could easily see them going from work rivals (within the same firm or on opposite sides) to lovers.
Thanks for letting me talk Chlogan! I don't know if I'll ever write anything about them. I love Chloe (and have written from her POV once) but I'm not super interested in writing about Logan. I don't hate him (Linda's parents are the only "Bob's Burgers" characters I might say I hate) but I don't find him particularly compelling. That said, "Jade in the Shade" was probably the most I've enjoyed his character- and the first time I ever felt empathy for him- so who knows what the future may hold!

What time is it? It's Misako Azuma time.
In contrast to her husband, Misako grew up with a very different kind of life. She is the oldest out of her three siblings, then comes her sister and her brother last. Misako grew up affluent and never really have to want for anything.
Her father is a highly respected judge and comes from a long line of them. The Azuma family has the the ability to read things at record speed. To finish an entire college textbook, it could take them anywhere between a half hour to an hour to finish it. Whatever they read can be spit right back out at you. However, just like anyone else they will forget the information over time if they don't make an effort to put it to memory.
The quirk has very few restrictions. A drawback of them utilizing their power is that they can have terrible headaches or migraines after using it for extended period of time. This fundamentally has allowed the Azuma family to succeed in fields that require a lot of studying such as law or medicine. Like his predecessors, Chikao Azuma put in the work to become a lawyer, but a lot of his success relied heavily on nepotism and deals being done under the table.
Misako's mother (Min-Jae) is an heiress to a large Korean investment company. Her mother's side of the family have a probability quirk/quirk of foresight and have the ability to predict how likely statistics & numbers will change. With their family owning an investment company, they are able to predict when numbers the stock market will go up or when it will go down.
As with any quirk, they have their limitations and only can see so far into the future and if they try to go beyond that limitation, the vision will muddle or they will become confused. The confusion is very much like chess blindness when there are so many possibilities that the player becomes disorientated and are unable to make even the simplest of strategies.
While they may not have the ability to look 10 years into the future to see if their investments are viable long term, it is beneficial as far as day trading goes. They also are unable to predict the outcome of any other event. Its strictly a math based foresight.
Being the eldest, Misako had a lot on her shoulders and her parents expected nothing but perfection out of her. Once her quirk began to manifest, her parents worked on planning her future, she was to be an attorney as she had inherited her father's quirk. As a teenager she often rebelled against her parents in anyway that she could. Ear piercings, styling her hair by shaving off a chunk of it, chokers, anything that would set her parent's teeth on edge (Shota gets his goth aesthetic from someone).
They could choose her career, but Misako refused to allow them to choose her husband. She didn't want a loveless marriage. By the time that her family had planned to start finding a partner for her, she had already fallen in love with her future-husband.
Misako's parents had an arranged marriage and their relationship was rather cold and transitional at best. The nature of her parent's relationship is another reason why she was so taken with Souta and the Aizawa family. Their dynamic was so different from what she was used to and seeing how family orientated Souta was, made her fall in love with him all the more.
Misako continued to have a rocky relationship with her parents until Mio was born and then Shota shortly after. Her mother was taken with her grandchildren and was softer and sweeter with them than she ever had been with Misako. Shota ended up having a close connection with her and is the reason he has any sort of fluency in Korean.

NAME: Lucinda Yua Johnson GENDER & PRONOUNS: Cis woman / She/her AGE & DATE OF BIRTH: 27 years old / March 19th,1995 NEIGHBORHOOD: Neptune Ave TIME IN Roswell: 17 years (but moved away for a few years) OCCUPATION: Fashion Stylist
BIO.
TW: pregnancy, death
Lucinda Williams wasn’t exactly a wanted child, she was an accident, a drunken one at that. Tiffany Michaels was a twenty-something with no desire to be a parent, she lived off support from the government and spent most of her money at bars. Steven Tanaka was a deadbeat drug addict who disappeared as soon as he found out Tiffany was pregnant, which wasn’t until her second trimester. Her mom was too busy living her own life to really bother about the child that she had at home. Lucy was raised pretty much full time by her grandmother, a caring woman who felt she had screwed up on her first daughter so was using Lucinda as a do-over. Unfortunately she wasn’t available as much as Lucinda got older and she became very self sufficient. Lucinda was able to make her own meals and she organised the house whilst her mom was away. She likened herself to Matilda, but without the super intellect and ability to move things with her eyes, though she did test it every so often.
She did okay in school, but with no-one to help support her with her homework she wasn’t able to succeed to her highest potential. She floated by in the middle, not really catching the attention of teachers in either a positive or negative way. No-one noticed that her lunchbox was practically empty or that her shoes were almost worn through. Clothes were her outlet though. With no money to buy clothes Lucinda got inventive and she scoured charity shops for bargains that she hand sewed into things that resembled the newest fashion. She was creative and crafty and managed to convince most people at school that she had money, despite struggling to get food together each night.
When Lucy was 7 her grandmother died, the only person in her family who had ever showed her any kind of empathy. Without her grandmother’s support her mom was investigated by social services and they quickly realised that there wasn’t any parenting happening. Her mom didn’t put up a fight and soon Lucinda found herself in foster care. It was bittersweet for Lucy, she hated her mom so it felt good to be leaving her but as much as she didn’t want to, she did love her too and it hurt to know that she didn’t even fight for her. Luckily she had big doe eyes on her side and she was rather good at presenting herself, so she got adopted; to her social worker’s surprise.
She found herself part of the Johnson brood, a family of mis-fits that together just seemed to somehow work. Lucinda didn’t fit in at first, she rebelled against the parenting and the control, she was used to making her own decisions. She wouldn’t eat with the family, choosing to make her own meals when she was hungry and she rejected the rides to school, used to cycling there on her very rusty bike. Lucinda was a one woman show and it was hard for her to allow others into her bubble, her walls were high and well built and it took a lot of time for them to be broken down.
They eventually won her over, with a sewing machine. It was the perfect gift, she refused to use it at first but her curiosity won out and soon Lucinda was able to customise her outfits at speed. The need to uplevel clothes became less of a necessity as she was bought new ones but Lucy continued to show her individuality in how she styled her outfits. Going from being an only child to one of a bunch was a hard adjustment but Lucy quickly became very proud of being an Johnson. The family became part of her bubble and she became as fiercely protective of them as she did herself. She got herself into some trouble at school defending her family, one bad word against them and Lucy was quick to show how she felt, often using her fists.
When she was 10 Lucy’s life was uprooted again, but this time she did it with a family around her. Her father got a job in America and they all headed to the small town of Roswell. Lucy was pretty good at fitting in and she made friends pretty quickly. School was still not really her thing, she got by but her grades were pretty average. She excelled in two areas, language and art. Her creativity spilled from her clothes to her words and Lucy was always keen to learn new languages, she wasn’t great at the reading and writing but she could hold conversations in a range of languages.
At 21 she moved to LA after getting an apprenticeship at a big styling company. Suddenly she was styling known people and her outfits were appearing on red carpets and paparazzi photos. It was a whole new world and it took Lucy a while to adjust. She lived there for 4 years but the LA life didn’t quite sit right with Lucy and she headed back to Roswell, leaving the love of her life behind.
Now an adult, Lucinda is doing well, she has a high paying job as a stylist, getting to do her hobby as a way of making money. Lucy isn’t one for commitment though, she changes her mind constantly, repainting her apartment far too often and constantly changing her image. She spends money far too easily, choosing to spend it rather than save for the future. The one place that Lucy really works hard is on her job, the only thing that she loves above her job is her family, they are her world.

wot reread: the fires of heaven (chap 27- chap 28)
spoilers for the fires of heaven; minor spoiler talking about one of the prophecies of the dragon that may or may not have actually been mentioned yet in the book series. Vague references to what one of Min’s viewings means but no details.
1. Okay, I’ve got a theory now about why Siuan was so firmly “let’s find the random rebels that we know no details about” rather than “let’s find the Dragon Reborn” and I think it lies in her knowing that she is very capable of manipulating the members of the Tower (at least the ones that didn’t act to depose her) and not being certain of her ability to do the same with Rand. The one time she saw Rand, she tried to fluster him and throw him off his stride and didn’t succeed as much as she clearly went into the meeting planning to do (thanks to the help that Rand got from Lan and Verin). She might have simply felt more comfortable dealing with Aes Sedai rather than the more unknown factor of Rand. Another factor may also lie in her feeling comfortable with how she and Moiraine had initially split things up, with Moiraine having Dragon-duty and Siuan having Aes Sedai-duty.
2. Siuan’s absolutely hilarious “let’s convince everyone that my co-conspirator and I hate each other” trick is great tho. I love that she manages to pull it again despite the fact that all the sisters present should be aware that she absolutely pulled the wool over their eyes while conspiring with Moiraine. But now that she’s stilled, they don’t take her seriously enough to believe she’s capable of doing something like that!
3. More on Carlinya, who had that viewing about a sketch/tattoo of a raven from Min -- “a great deal of logic and not much common sense”. I am going to keep a close eye on Carlinya and do my best not to forget about her, lol.
4. It’s cool finding out that Siuan was Head Spymaster for the Blues before she became Amyrlin. Guessing that’s also a post she chased because it would be useful for Dragon Reborn hunting. I think this is the first we know that directly, though it was implied when she was hunting out the rumors of Salidar.
5. And Leane has spies in Tar Valon itself, which is SUPER useful. I’m just... wistfully thinking of how useful this information would have been to Rand. Don’t mind me.
6. Honestly, the free corporal punishment in the White Tower does make me think less of it as an institution. If beating people is the only way you can get them to behave, then you aren’t very creative. I’m glad that the general vibe of parenting and teaching has moved away from thinking this is an acceptable way to treat young people or students.
7. Ah, and the other reason for finding the rebel Aes Sedai is revealed: the Big Lie of Logain having being set up as a False Dragon by the Red Ajah. This always seemed like a super-risky manuever to me, and I’m not sure how well it worked. Well, if the main purpose was to solidify the Salidar resistance against Elaida, by giving them a reason to be outraged at her and the Red Ajah in general, then maybe it worked well enough.
8. It’s kinda ironic, tbh, that they’re so convinced that the White Tower should be whole for the Last Battle, considering there’s a prophecy about “the unstained tower, broken”. But I suppose they’ve convinced themselves it’s not about them. Also, out-of-world, I’m not sure if that prophecy has been created yet in the series lol.
9. Leane ‘adapting’ her men-seduction techniques for use on women. Apparently a revelation to her that this is possible.
10. It is Siuan and Leane who turn the rebel camp into a true White Tower in exile, with a Hall of Sitters and deliberating on an Amrylin.
11. Siuan has reasoned out that Rand likely went to the Aiel Waste -- that’s another possible reason why she decided against Tear (though I note she didn’t whisper a word of this to Min). “wherever he was, Moiraine would be there with a hand on his collar” so much faith in Moiraine! Also, leashing vibes again.
12. They decide to send two Green sisters (and their seven!! Warders) to check out Siuan’s idea that Rand is in the Aiel Waste: Kiruna and Bera.
13. Siuan finds out that Bryne has chased them all the way to Salidar and “her hands and feet suddenly felt cold” and “she felt as if a mast had fallen on her head” and she’s in an absolute panic, blurting out that he must be sent away or killed.
14. Hey, apparently Myrelle is married to all three of her Warders! Some tiny bit of balance against all the Aiel polygamy.
15. The Warders point out that having one of the Great Generals in their camp would be very useful, if they mean to take back the White Tower at some point.
16. Ugh, and Bryne asks for Siuan to be his servant for the time while he’s in the camp. I’m not super-fond of the whole “humbling a strong woman to make her an appropriate romance target” thing and, from what I remember, that was the vibe this storyline gave me.
17. Carlinya “reeks of ambition” from what Bryne can tell. As does Beonin.
18. Bryne’s three conditions for being their general sound completely reasonable though. I’ve got no objection to those.
19. Ugh but that dismissive “well you no longer need concern yourself about such things” re: Siuan no longer having the power to influence world events. And manages to make her worried that he’s going to force himself on her and doesn’t back down to clarify himself once he realizes that she took his words as a threat. So that’s... that’s a great beginning there.
20. Min thinks about going to Rand, but still no reasons on why she likes him. I will keep you updated.
21. This is Jordan’s most mean-spirited viewing: “If you want to stay alive, you had better stay close to him.” (re: Siuan and Bryne) And I do say ‘Jordan’ here and not ‘Min’ on purpose.
22. Again, Min makes ‘being in love’ with Rand sound so unappealing? “Fall in love with a man, and you ended up doing laundry, even if it did belong to another man”. Also, Min... Rand is kinda famous and has servants? Pretty much everywhere he goes. And even if he didn’t, I doubt he would expect her to do his laundry? He lived alone with his father for most of his life. He knows how to do his own laundry. It just makes for another moment that makes it feel like Min isn't thinking of him as Rand at all, just as That Random Dude that she is destined to love.

Daughters & Mothers
For a show ostensibly about patriarchy, it’s thematically coherent that when the girls’ backstories focus on a parental relationship, it’s always about the father. Whether it’s a tragedy, like Dot’s dad, a betrayal, like Fatin’s, or a threat, like Shelby’s. Which got me curious: how do mothers fare, in The Wilds?
1- The absent moms
We have two mothers who are absent from their daughters’ lives, Dot’s mom and Toni’s mom. Dot’s mother is so completely absent she is not even a character in Dot’s story. She’s not mentioned once. In fact, we don’t even know if Dot has a mother, and Dot doesn’t seem to care: she has a parent who loves her, and the only problem is that he can’t take care of her anymore, so she has to take care of him instead.
What I find interesting is that Toni’s familial situation is the reverse: she doesn’t know her dad, he’s not in the picture, and it’s her mother who has become unable to care for her. But Toni’s feelings about her mom are starkly different from Dot’s feelings about her dad: there’s a lot of anger and resentment, mixed in with a lingering yearning for connection. Toni’s mom is a drug addict, and she’s the reason Toni is in foster care. Her absence is the stem of Toni’s abandonment issues, of her distrust in people, of her trouble with regulating her own anger.
Things I want: We haven’t seen Toni’s mom onscreen yet, whereas we have seen Dot’s dad struggling with what his daughter has to do, and loving her, so the comparison favors him, of course. But I’d be interested to see what exactly Toni’s relationship with her mom is like, to see if she’s given as much nuance and empathy as Dot’s father. And I would like for Dot to be given the space to be angry about what she was asked to do - even if she loves her father, even if she misses him and mourns him.
2- The traitors
Yes, I am putting Fatin and Shelby’s moms in the same category, even though they are very different people. Mrs Jadmani is a second generation immigrant (I think?), a career woman who earns a lot of money and is pretty strict with Fatin because she wants her to succeed. By contrast, Mrs Goodkind is quiet, nice but effaced, a white Christian woman in a traditional, religious marriage ; we don’t know if she works, but we see her cooking. They don’t have much in common on the surface.
And yet, they both equally fail to protect their daughters from their husbands. They both fail to take the girls’ sides. Fatin’s mom is hurt by the affairs, obviously, and also hurt by Fatin’s reckless behavior, but in the end she chooses to punish Fatin and not her husband. When Dave Goodkind makes decisions about the lives of his children, whether it’s the kind of breakfast food they’re allowed to eat, or a medical procedure, Shelby’s mom may timidly protest, but mostly she defers to him, and doesn’t speak up - instead, just like the children, she waits for the threat to pass. We can feel for her, but she is of no help to Shelby, she is not Shelby’s ally in this conflict with her father.
Things I want: Obviously, Shelby and Fatin both have a lot of strong feelings about their fathers - whom they love, and are hurt by - and I think these feelings will continue to be explored in the show. But I hope the show also delves more into their relationships with their mothers, and with enough nuance : how can they negotiate this betrayal from their moms, with the knowledge that these women are also hurting?
3- Moms who don’t understand
And finally, our last category of moms: they are well-intentioned, but they simply don’t understand their daughters, whether it’s because they don’t actually make the effort, or because the girls are too good at hiding their feelings, or a mix of both. The result is a serious communication problem, a growing distance, and the moms’ inability to help their daughters in a positive way.
Leah’s mother, for example, seems well-meaning, and genuinely worried for Leah. But she’s also clearly unable to talk to Leah, or more importantly get her to talk. I’m the first one to make fun of Leah’s dramatic lines (affectionately, I love her), but when her mom refers to what is like... some sort of intense depressive/self-harming state that has been going on for many months? as a “funk”?? I get where Leah’s dismissal/resentment comes from. And that’s not even touching on the fact that Leah’s mom lies to her about the retreat.
Same thing with Nora and Rachel’s mom. She loves her kids, she’s proud of them, she clearly wants the best for them! And yet, somehow she completely fails to understand how isolated and starved for attention Rachel feels in this family, and the extremes to which that leads her. And I don’t know whether Nora has told her mom about Quinn and his death, but it doesn’t look like it, which is partly why Gretchen is so successful in her manipulation.
And then there is Martha and Bernice. Bernice, in my opinion, is the most positive portrayal of a mother in the show - she’s worried, she’s loving, she takes actions, she feels responsible, she tries - yet even she doesn’t understand her daughter at all. Bernice just can’t communicate with Martha in a way that works for both of them. Strikingly, we even get a scene where Bernice is more comfortable talking about Martha with Toni, rather than to Martha. I don’t think there’s any other girl who is absent from her own flashback.
Things I want: “I want my mom,” Leah cries in episode 9. Please, let these kids reconnect with their mothers (and fathers). Let the moms make amends if needed, let them learn to listen to their daughters, and better communicate their love and worry. Let the girls learn that they can, actually, trust their moms to protect them - obviously the experiment is going to accentuate the distrust, for a while, but I’m hoping for some positive resolutions.
4- Gretchen’s mother complex
To end this already very long post, here are a few thoughts on Gretchen, and her relationship to motherhood. We learn at the end of the season that Gretchen has a son, and we get some insight into her immense guilt/fear that she failed as his mother - and how she covers/explains/understands what happened by blaming the lures of patriarchy. I think it’s interesting, in that context, to remember that she refers to the girls as her children, in the mental health hospital, that she refers to her work as the duties of a mother. Gretchen doesn’t just have a God complex, she has a mother complex too. She created her ~Gynotopia : she is the mother both of this new world, and of the girls she chose to inhabit it. And, as gods and parents alike sometimes do, she both wants to control these ~daughters and mold them and bend them to her will, but also, paradoxically, she wants them to grow and flourish and succeed. On that note, I also think it’s interesting that Gretchen chose two men as “authority figures” for the interviews - two “father figures”, if you will, for the girls to confront and rebel against, while she remains, for now, in the shadows, the ultimate authority.
And let me add one more thing : in Gretchen’s team, it seems there’s only one other parent. Agent Young is a father. To a girl. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he’s the first/only one to break and want to help the girls. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that he is narratively linked to Leah - Gretchen’s favorite daughter - and Bernice Blackburn - our most sympathetic mother figure (since Gretchen asks him to find some blackmail material on Martha). If Agent Young doesn’t redeem himself by helping the daughters, then I hope he will by helping the mothers.

Frev writing prompts, Part 5! Seriously, I have no idea how I keep coming up with these. 😅
36. The protagonist was born and raised by a troupe of traveling performers. For as long as they can remember, they have been traveling from place to place, never staying anywhere for a few days at most.
The protagonist’s father is the troupe’s flutist and singer while their mother is a puppeteer so the youth has always had a passion for the performing arts and dreams of traveling all over Europe with their big happy family.
Nicknamed “L’œillet rouge” (The Red Carnation) by the troupe as an homage to their father’s favorite flower, the protagonist enjoys playing the flute and singing with their father, as well as putting on puppet shows with their mother.
With a song in their heart, a smile on their face and their father’s precious flute in their hands, the protagonist travels all over the country with their family, entertaining the people of France but never settling down and they like it that way.
But one day, while the troupe is staying in Paris and putting on a rather satirical puppet show which mocks the current regime, the protagonist’s parents are suddenly arrested by the police. Apparently, the father is a dangerous rebel while the mother is guilty of having sheltered said rebel years ago.
The protagonist is convinced that there must be a mistake and decides to rescue their parents with the help of all the other troupe members, including the protagonist’s older maternal half-brother and their maternal grandparents, all of whom are eager to help.
The time is limited and the rescue will be far from easy, but the protagonist will be damned if they don’t at least try to succeed. So, with that in mind, the young flutist and their family start to concoct the rescue plan...
37. Rumors have it that people who have been murdered tend to become vengeful ghosts and haunt their killers to exact revenge.
This is certainly true for Robespierre and his supporters. Unable to find peace, their souls are brought back to the realm of the living, seeking revenge on the Thermidorians.
This particular circumstance is quite convenient for the protagonist, a spirit medium who summons these ghosts and intends to use them as tools in their plan to torment the Thermidorians and avenge their family that got massacred in Lyon, skillfully using the revolutionaries’ restlessness and anger to achieve their goal.
However, soon certain events make the protagonist question the morality of using these spirits. Perhaps the protagonist is no better than their enemies if they are not above manipulating others. Perhaps there’s another way… Nonsense! It’s not manipulation if the other people also want revenge and are dead anyway...right?
38. The heroine of the story, like many other girls of the noble class, grew up and got her education in a convent in her hometown of Caen, France.
As a result of this upbringing, the young woman is rather used to a sheltered life, her idealism is through the roof and she is rather nostalgic about her life in the convent and her friendship with another noble girl, Charlotte Corday, who is the heroine’s closest friend and confidant.
At first the noblewoman wants to stay out of the events of the revolution, dreaming of taking her vows as a nun and living a quiet life in the convent, but those plans are abruptly thwarted by Corday, whose influence slowly gets the naïve heroine deeper and deeper into the mess that is the French Revolution.
Being idealistic, easily trusting, quiet, pacifistic and devoutly Catholic, the heroine initially follows her best friend’s lead and trusts her judgement since Corday is the closest thing to a big sister that the young woman has.
However, when Corday tries to convince her to kill Jean-Paul Marat and end the revolution, the heroine starts having mixed feelings about her friend’s decisions, despite being angry with Marat for her own personal reasons. After all, her faith teaches to forgive, not to judge and take revenge, so now the heroine must make a choice.
Will she betray her best friend and ruin the plan or will she cast aside her morals to help Corday and, presumably, the rest of the country? Is Marat really the bloodthirsty monster that Corday says he is? Is there another way to deal with the situation at hand without any casualties? And what consequences will the main character face for the choice she makes?
39. The main character is an illegitimate son of a Russian noble and a serf (yes, serfs were still a thing in Russia) who got taken in by his father as a “ward” and sent to France to get a good education, as everything French was very fashionable in the Russian Empire at the time.
There, in Paris of 1789, the young man absorbs all the knowledge he can, learning languages, reading the prominent books written in the Enlightenment era and even befriends a man by the name of Maximilien de Robespierre, a lawyer from Arras and the representative of Artois.
Considering that Robespierre was almost born illegitimate, he is the first person in a long time who doesn’t judge the protagonist for the circumstances of his birth and accepts him for him. Excited to be accepted at long last, the young man begins to look up to Robespierre as a mentor and an older brother of sorts, quickly absorbing his ideas and supporting him.
So, naturally, when the revolution begins and the young man finds himself trapped in Paris, he joins the revolutionaries to fight alongside his mentor.
Thus begin his adventures.
40. The protagonist is a child of criminals forced to survive on the streets after losing their parents until they’re eventually taken in by a seemingly sympathetic Jacobin, given a new name, a home and a fresh start in life. The protagonist essentially becomes the revolutionary’s ward and their guardian even takes them to the Convention so the youth can observe the meetings.
All seems good for the protagonist...almost too good to be true. But eventually certain events force the protagonist to wonder if their new guardian truly cares about them.
Could it be that their Jacobin guardian has some sinister motives? And will the protagonist be able to move away from their “bad” heritage and live an honest life at last?
41. Barras is in love. Again.
Head over heels over a pretty servant he recently hired and she even seems to like her employer back. Even her suspiciously strong resemblance to a certain Jacobin who got executed in 1794 isn’t a dealbreaker for Barras and the smitten man writes said resemblance off as a coincidence.
The other Thermidorians, especially Fouché, are not that blind and they fear that a relative of that particular executed man is here to seek revenge. Fouché decides to investigate this seemingly ordinary and harmless young servant, suspecting that she has quite a few skeletons in her closet.
Are these suspicions going to be confirmed or is Fouché simply being paranoid?
42. Thermidor has just taken place. The Jacobins are imprisoned and it seems like the traitors are going to win. All hope is lost for the Jacobins and their enemies rejoice.
But little do the Thermidorians know that by betraying and imprisoning all the men who stand in their way, they have just acquired new enemies - women.
Revolutionary women.
Wives, daughters, sisters, nieces, goddaughters, lovers, wards, friends and sympathizers of the captured Jacobins who are not going to sit back and give up.
Seeing how bleak things are, these women, led by a mysterious woman who conceals her face behind a mask and calls herself “Citoyenne Liberté” (Citizen Liberty), decide to rescue their imprisoned loved ones from the clutches of the Thermidorians.
They’re running out of time, they’re outnumbered and not equipped with proper weapons, but that is hardly a problem they can’t solve and they’re willing to fight against the odds regardless of the obstacles.
After all, Heaven hath no fury like a woman scorned, which is what the Thermidorians are about to learn the hard way.
43. A singer and actress who used to perform in Venice flees to France after a scandal demolishes her reputation. Having only her voice and her acting to make ends meet, for a while she tries to find work in Paris but barely makes enough money for her and her son to survive.
Her only friend and confidant in this bleak situation is a future revolutionary who happens to admire the heroine’s singing and strongly believes that she deserves better. He even bonds with the actress’s toddler son and is willing to step up and become a proper father figure for the child.
Thanks to said revolutionary, the heroine’s life begins to change for the better and she decides to settle down in Paris. Even when she learns about the approaching revolution, she chooses to stay in the only place where she feels like she can belong.
What’s more, the actress finally finds her new purpose in life. She too can fight for the cause of her new partner and his friends, in her own way.
How is a woman whose main talents are acting and singing supposed to be able fight, you may ask? Why, by becoming a spy for the Jacobins and the singing voice of the revolution of course!
And she might just be able to prove that anyone can be a revolutionary and one doesn’t need to be a fighter nor an orator to help a noble cause.
44. A female servant working for Georges Danton has to practically flee the house of her employer after the latter crosses all the possible boundaries while drunk.
Fearing for her safety and profoundly traumatized by the event, the servant is found and taken in by a seemingly sympathetic man who sees Danton as a sworn enemy for his own reasons. Considering that both have a grudge against Danton and the man is a journalist, he and the servant team up to bring Danton down.
Will they succeed? Why does the journalist hate Danton? And is his desire to aid the heroine genuine?
45. Paris, France. The revolution is in full swing.
The Committee of Public Safety has to deal with multiple issues, the ongoing war is depleting France’s resources and the situation seems dire.
What’s more, a new newspaper, “La Voix de la Justice” (The Voice of Justice), began to circulate in the city. While this particular fact isn’t that surprising by itself, the thing that sets this newspaper apart from the rest is the fact that its author is anonymous.
Nobody knows who writes this newspaper but the articles are quite good and this mysterious person has already exposed several people who were using the Reign of Terror as an excuse for their atrocities.
Naturally, all these details catch the attention of Jean-Paul Marat and Camille Desmoulins, two of the most prominent journalists of that time. Intrigued by this new newspaper and its author, the two revolutionaries team up to track that person down, if only to find out who they are and thank them for helping their cause.
46. The protagonist grew up believing that Robespierre is single handedly responsible for the execution of their beloved aunt and uncle and, as a result, believes that the man deserved to be executed for that betrayal.
However, the protagonist is soon forced to question their judgment when their older cousin, Horace Desmoulins, reaches out to them in a letter, inviting them to Paris and claiming that he found evidence proving that in actuality Robespierre attempted to save Camille and Lucile Desmoulins, Horace’s parents.
Although the protagonist is skeptical at first, since Horace has always defended his godfather, they are still intrigued by their cousin’s invitation and leaves Guise to join Horace in his investigation.
Together, the two cousins are both determined to clear the names of Horace’s parents and figure out what role Robespierre actually played in the family tragedy.
47. The five protagonists are all members of a heavy metal band whose name and songs are an homage to the French Revolution.
Previously little more than a quintet of college misfits determined to rehabilitate this particular event and tell the real story through music, the band finally starts gaining popularity after a successful concert at a music festival in Marseille.
And then things take a turn for the unexpected when the band gets into an accident on their way home, only to wake up in Revolutionary France. Naturally, they now must survive and return home but this adventure might just become the inspiration they needed so much...
48. After the protagonist’s father leaves them and their blind mother behind to move to Paris, the protagonist is naturally upset. Year after year, they wait for their father to return but he never does.
In 1789, after losing their mother to an illness, the protagonist decides that enough is enough and travels to Paris to confront their father. To their disgust, they soon find out that their father is now remarried, with a new family and quite rich while the protagonist is basically a pauper. Moreover, the father seems to have joined the revolutionaries, which is something that the protagonist cannot approve of either.
Now the protagonist wants to make sure that their father faces the music for his betrayal so they contact a journalist who is about to expose said father in an article.
A story of one of his enemies leaving behind his first family will be a nice addition to the already existing accusations of corruption, but the protagonist and the journalist soon realize that they are not immune to the consequences of their actions either and this article might cause more damage than they think it will.
49. (A reimagining of Aladdin) After their flute is broken beyond repair, the protagonist goes to a pawn shop to find a replacement for their practice.
It is there that an old ivory flute catches their attention so the protagonist purchases it, has it professionally restored and decides to keep it, ignoring the warning of the shopkeeper that it’s cursed and the suspiciously low price.
The protagonist is a skeptic and never believed in magic, curses and other occult things.
That is until they play the flute for the first time and a man poofs into existence like a genie from a lamp. Introducing himself as Louis Antoine de Saint-Just, he informs the protagonist that he used to be the owner of the flute but is now trapped in it because of black magic.
Despite their skepticism, the protagonist cannot logically explain anything that’s going on but wants to help so they strike a deal with Saint-Just - he is going to help the protagonist win over their love interest in exchange for freedom.
As for how the spell is supposed to be broken, the protagonist is completely clueless but their mysterious neighbor with a knack for alchemy and the occult might be able to help…
50. Lyon, France.
The future Thermidorians mercilessly massacre innocent people and rule with an iron fist. Just today they massacred several prominent noble families of the city for defying them.
However, what the tyrants do not know is that they didn’t massacre everyone, for the daughters of the executed nobles are currently living at a convent to get education, as was common back then.
Upon receiving the tragic news and fearing that these young girls are going to end up on the death list, two nuns, the heroines of the story, come up with a plan to escort the girls out of the city and get them to a different location where they would be safe.
The plan is daring but the risk is too high to sit there and do nothing. Will the nuns be able to keep their students safe?

THE JEDI AS NATURAL, INSTINCTIVE TEACHERS IS A FUNDAMENTAL TO WHO THEY ARE AT THE CORE.  For @jedijune‘s theme for Saturday, June 13th: Teaching/Learning
Tumblr media
Taking a Closer Look at the Jedi Order in Star Wars Canon [Meta/Reference Guide]: Chapter 3: Teaching Is A Central Theme To The Jedi
Teaching is a central theme to the Jedi:     Obi-Wan:  “You’d make a good teacher.”     Anakin: “No thanks.”     Obi-Wan: “Anakin, teaching is a privilege. And it’s part of a Jedi’s responsibility to help train the next generation.” [Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie]
“Master Yoda said we never stop learning.  Perhaps the Master is meant to be as much a student as the Padawan.  I may not be the teacher that Qui-Gon was.  But I am the one that Anakin has.”  (–Obi-Wan Kenobi, Age of the Republic: Obi-Wan Kenobi #1)
Henry Gilroy and Dave Filoni on establishing Yoda as a teacher early on:      Gilroy:  "There were elements that we really wanted to explore, and that was things that were classic to Yoda, as a teacher.  We thought this was a great opportunity to show how the Jedi interact with the clones.  Specifically Yoda in a teaching role, of the clones, who were socially new, who were created to fight, and he really broadened their horizons, and helped them realize there was a great big universe out there that was bigger than just fighting and killing.“      Filoni:  "You see Yoda teaching the clones, much like he taught Luke, ‘cause that was kind of natural for them, a natural instinct to take these clones like their students. And it really allowed Yoda to have a scene that was reminiscent of a scene we both liked growing up, when he was teaching Luke.”       (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Ambush” commentary)
George Lucas on education (who believes it is the most fundamental issue):      “Plato didn’t teach [in the sense of drilling answers into them] people anything. All he did was ask questions.  The process was asking questions–'Why is the sky blue?’  It was purely a reverse of us feeding you all the information and [instead] teaching the kids how to learn.”       I find this is often the answer for why Yoda or the other Jedi don’t just lecture on the answers re: Force theology, because the narrative believe/creator’s belief is that it’s more important to teach how to ask a question than to drill in an answer.  A direct example is Yoda’s teachings to Ahsoka in “Teach You, I Will” getting her to think for herself and how George Lucas talks in an Empire Strikes Back documentary about Yoda’s bizarre speech patterns being about getting the audience to really stop and think about what the weird little frog man is saying.
JEDI PHILOSOPHY + TEACHINGS:
The Jedi did not see themselves as infallible or that failure was something any of them could avoid, even for their most esteemed Council members:     Depa Billaba:  "We cannot deny, Masters, that I failed you.  Failed you on a massive scale.“     Obi-Wan Kenobi:  "A lack of failure has never been a prerequisite to service, else none of us would be here.  Welcome back to the Council, Master Billaba.”  [Kanan: The Last Padawan]
The Jedi do not see themselves as a source of the light side of the Force, but rather the other way around.  In Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith, Jocasta faces off against Vader and says:     “You are [Palpatine’s] tool.  Little better than a droid, set to stamp out the light side of the Force.  But this is impossible.  The Force is eternal.  It cannot be ended, it cannot be stopped, not so long as life exists.“ showing that, even if all the Jedi were dead, they knew that the light would still find its way in the galaxy, because the Force is eternal, the Force is in all life, the light is in all life, so long as that life exists.
“The Jedi can guide.  We can teach.  We can help people to help themselves.  But we are not an army.  If a people are truly determined to write themselves out of existence, there is little we can do.” [Obi-Wan & Anakin]
Questions are shown as natural and a good thing:     “A child, Anakin remains.  His path before coming to us, difficult.  His questions, natural.”  [–Yoda, Obi-Wan & Anakin]     "I have no issues with Anakin.  He is asking questions, as he should be at his age.“ [–Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan & Anakin]
It’s not just younglings that should be asking questions, but everyone:     "Answers, did you find?”     "I did.  And as often is with the Force, more questions.“     "Mmmm.  Good, questions are.  Ask them we must.  Certainty in our understanding, to arrogance it leads.  To the dark side.” [–Yoda, Qui-Gon, Age of the Republic - Qui-Gon Jinn #1]
Questions and determining your own path tend to be a big theme with the Jedi, that everyone must determine what they want for themselves, what they understand the Force has laid out their path to be and whether they want that, like with the above, and when it’s woven into the very decision that Ezra has to make, that Kanan can’t just tell him what to do on this:     “Which way is the right way?     “The wrong question, that is.”     “I’m sorry. I don’t understand. To be honest, I don’t even know what I’m doing here.”     “A better question, that is.”     “Kanan said I was gonna be tested, but he never said what for or why.”     “And your Master tell you everything, must he?”     “Well– No.”     “Your path you must decide.”  [–Ezra and Yoda, Star Wars Rebels, “Path of the Jedi”]
Obi-Wan taught Anakin that things should not be trampled just for acting according to their nature, instead (when they can) use the Force to move them along:       "These beasts are nearly mindless, Anakin.  I can feel it.  They are merely following their nature, they should not die simply because they crossed our path.  Use the Force to send them on their way.”  [Obi-Wan & Anakin]
Henry Gilroy says a similar thing with:     "Obi-Wan truly is a Jedi in that he’s like, ‘Okay, I’m not going to murder these creatures [in the Ryloth arc of The Clone Wars].  They’re starving to death.  They’ve basically been unleashed against these people as a weapon, but it’s not their fault. They’re just doing what they do.  They’re just animals who wanna eat.’  [Aggressive Negotiations Interview]
Ezra says he saw his parents and Kanan tells him what the Jedi teach:      "I saw them, Kanan. My parents. I-- I can't explain how."      "The Jedi teach that life doesn't cease at death, merely changes form in the Force. Your parents are alive inside you, Ezra. They will be. Always."  [Star Wars Rebels, "Legacy"]
JEDI AND THEIR STUDENTS:
A great emphasis is placed on teachers and students working together:  “Yoda cocked his head. ‘Adapt he must as well. Cooperation is learned not through individual effort. Only together can you progress.’” [Master and Apprentice] Yoda also says the bond between a Master and a Padawan is sacred.  [Dooku: Jedi Lost]
Jedi are never really done being students/being tested, even when they become teachers and Masters themselves, that students teach Masters just as Masters teach students, and their tests reflect this:   "But surely I should have been informed if you were testing my Padawan?“     "Who says the lesson was for him?” Bant said, smiling at her old friend.     Obi-Wan’s jaw dropped.  "You were testing me?“     "For both of you, the test was,” Yoda told him.     Mace nodded.  "A reminder that while Padawans must listen to their masters…“   "Teachers must also listen to their pupils,” Bant concluded.  [Choose Your Destiny:  Obi-Wan & Anakin]
“This is why we study.  Why we learn.  Skill is the child of patience.“  [Obi-Wan & Anakin]
"Your mission was never about [bringing back] the book.  It was about everything you did to find it.  All the challenges you had to face along the way.  And you overcame them all.”  "It was a test.“  "It was a journey, the next step in your training, and you succeeded in every way that mattered.” (–Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee, Star Wars Adventures #20)
EARLY JEDI TEACHINGS/JEDI PHILOSOPHY 101:
As an overview of what Jedi teach as the early and foundational lessons, across multiple media, we see that meditation and self-reflection are just as important as bonding with their sacred crystal and practicing with their lightsaber, which then also connects with how so much of the early teachings Kanan gives Ezra when they're just starting are just as much/more focused on connection and understanding of self.  (As detailed below this!)  [Age of the Republic: Obi-Wan Kenobi + Kanan: The Last Padawan + Obi-Wan & Anakin]
One of the very first training sessions we see Kanan giving to Ezra–and thus informing our understanding of the foundations of Jedi teachings–is to have Ezra doing a handstand and tells him to, “Focus.  Focus on letting go.”  Eventually, trying to toss objects at him to get him into letting the Force move through him, hear its whispers instead of shouting at it.  Before Kanan brings out his lightsaber to practice with, he wants Ezra to first mentally focus.  [Star Wars Rebels, “Rise of the Old Masters”]
Another one of the earliest lessons Kanan teaches Ezra, putting it as one of the foundations of Jedi teachings is how they're connected to other beings:     “Step outside of yourself. Make a connection with another being.” as he teaches Ezra to connect with a loth-cat.       “I just don’t see the point of this.”     “The point is that you’re not alone. You’re connected to every living thing in the universe.”  [Star Wars Rebels, “Empire Day”]
When Kanan first starts training Ezra, he repeats Yoda’s saying of, “Do or do not.  There is no try.”  When Ezra questions it, Kanan says that he really doesn’t understand it, either.  By the end of the episode, after Kanan realizes Luminara can’t train Ezra, that he has to commit to Ezra instead of half-assing this, he says:     "I– Ezra. I’m not gonna try to teach you anymore. If all I do is try, that means I don’t truly believe I can succeed. So from now on, I will teach you.“  [Star Wars Rebels, “Rise of the Old Masters”]
Another early lesson is that Ezra must be honest with himself to advance as a Jedi:     “Ezra, you’ll never advance as a Jedi if you can’t be honest with yourself, at least.”     “What’s that supposed to mean?”     “It means Tseebo matters to you. You do care what happens to him.” [Star Wars Rebels, “Gathering Forces”]
Which is then reaffirmed later in that same episode:     “I got news for you, kid. Everyone’s afraid, but admitting it as you just did makes you braver than most, and it’s a step forward.” [–Kanan Jarrus, Star Wars Rebels, “Gathering Forces”]
Ezra has trouble moving forward in the first season because discipline and focus are fundamental to being a Jedi:     “But you said I was a Jedi. Why else would you be training me?”     “I never said you were a Jedi. I said you had the potential to become one. But you lack discipline, focus.” [Star Wars Rebels, “Path of the Jedi”]
JEDI CULTURE:
Jedi younglings (at least the diurnal ones) wake at dawn to meditate on the three pillars–the Force, Knowledge, and Self-Discipline.  Then they go to the refectory for lunch, where Dooku always likes to sit next to Sifo-Dyas. [Dooku: Jedi Lost]
The Jedi have a strong aesthetic that echoes the deepest parts of the Force–all circles and lines.  Time and the Force and the Jedi are all connected circles and arcing lines.
“You must not grow too attached, too fond, too in love with life as it is now.  The emotions are valuable and should not be suppressed… but you must learn to rule them, Padawan, lest they rule you.“  (Kanan: The Last Padawan)
“This man is perverting our sacred teachings to prey upon a vulnerable people.  I can think of little my tongue could say better than my saber in this instance.”      “Dissolve your hostility, Padawan.  Channel your frustrations into an appropriate emotion.  Violence, as always, is a last resort.”      “Of course.  Apologies, Master.”      “A fire burns inside of you, Padawn.  That, in itself, is not inherently wrong.  It is my job to help you temper it.” [Jedi of the Republic - Mace Windu]
JEDI AND FACING THE DARK SIDE:
“The fact that everything must change and that things come and go through [Anakin’s] life and that he can’t hold onto things, which is a basic Jedi philosophy that he isn’t willing to accept emotionally.”  (George Lucas, Attack of the Clones commentary)
The Jedi test from the Rebels episode “Path of the Jedi” novelization on facing their fears/the dark side within them:      "This test was not designed solely for the apprentice.  It was also a test for the master, for facing one’s fears was a lifelong struggle.” (Ezra’s Duel with Danger)
The test is specifically designed by the Jedi–as is the same test on Ilum for the Jedi younglings that they all had to face–to face their fears, because it didn’t just happen one time, it was something they faced all their lives, younglings and Knights and Masters, all of them.  This is why Ezra has to face it in Rebels, why Luke has to face it on Dagobah, why Rey has to face it on Ahch-To, the Jedi have always had to face the darkness within themselves and work beyond it.
Kanan also says it plainly as they enter the Temple:        “In here, you’ll have to face your worst fears and overcome them.” It’s pretty obvious that’s what happening when the Temple shows him a vision of the Grand Inquisitor killing Kanan and Ezra has to pick himself back up, admit what he’s feeling so he can face the fears again, and understand that he has to let them go and then it cannot hurt him here, the Grand Inquisitor’s blade passes right through him.  It’s then Yoda’s voice calls to him and we see that Ezra letting go of those fears allow him to move forward:      “Big fears have you faced, young one.”      “Yes.”      “Hmm. For what lies ahead, ready are you?”     “I am.”      “Come. See more clearly what you could not see before.” [Star Wars Rebels, “Path of the Jedi”]
When Cal is struggling with facing his fears and needs to create a new lightsaber, Cere gives him a pep talk and they head off to Ilum, where she tells him:  “You will be tested.  I don’t mean just here [on Ilum].  Every Jedi faces the dark side.  And it’s very easy to fail.  We will always struggle.  But that is the test.  It’s the choice to keep fighting that makes us who we are."  [–Cere Junda, Jedi: Fallen Order]
THE THEME OF GEORGE LUCAS’ MOVIES:
George Lucas says, “All of my movies are about one thing.  Which is the fact that the only prison you’re in is the prison of your mind.  And if you decide to open the door and get out, you can.  There’s nothing stopping you.“ –George Lucas (American Voices, 2015)
Which is reflected in the teachings of the Jedi, which further shows they’re in line with the narrative intentions of Star Wars:   Petro:  “You-you said we would be trapped.”   Yoda:  “Not by the cave you were but by your mind. Lessons, you have learned. Find courage, you did. Hope, patience Trust, confidence, and selflessness.” (The Clone Wars, “The Gathering”)

How to make a marriage work
Summary: If you had told when she first met Hank Voight that one day she’d be going to him for relationship advice, Kim would’ve strongly recommended you get your head checked out.
Set sometime in season three; Kim needs advice on how to be married, and goes to one of the only people in her life who's had a successful marriage.
Word Count: 2.5k
Read on AO3
Notes: This is a gift for Cíara (@fighterkimburgess ). They put me in my parental feels and i just have this need to Reward and gift them things. I've had this idea for a while and never planned on writing it bc I never could make it work, and it's self indulgent and I couldn't work out how it'd fit with season three Voight (bc he's not on the level, say, season seven Voight is) but my mind is inspired today and it just worked.
But yes. This is self indulgent and bc I was in my dad! Voight feels and Cíara just has a remarkable and incredible way of saying things that one) inspires me and two) makes me understand the nuances of this man.
Plus y'know. We've got burzek being cute in this and that promo dictated I needed to write cute burzek.
Enjoy!!!
Come on, Kimberly. Kim tells herself, her inner voice taking on a firm, no nonsense tone that reminds her strongly of Platt’s. You’ve faced down guns, you can do this.
Her mind rebels against that sentiment, and she wonders if she was actually given the choice—to do this, or to face down yet another gun—if she’d choose the gun, depending how much she’s bricking it right now.
It’s just Voight, she thinks, taking a few more deep breaths. Of course, it’s not just Voight. Physically, yes, it’s just the Sargent. But it’s not just Voight, it’s her boss, it’s the man who holds everyone to such high professional standards, it’s Voight after hours, it’s an unscheduled meeting.
And, the thing that’s playing on her mind so much, the thing that has made her keep hesitating, it’s the man who looked over her for Intelligence because of his perceived understanding of Adam and her.
There’s a lot of reasons that makes Kim justified about trying to go up to Voight’s office and instead having false starts, turning back around to flee to the locker room before he could see her. Even if she’s fearless in the face of danger, she still has every right to be unsure about this.
After all, he is her boss. And he might care about those he’s in charge of, especially his unit and Kim likes to think it’s also to those close to them. Definitely Platt, but also herself and Roman. But he dictates when things are personal, and that’s so far and few between. He’s a man who plays everything close to the chest and there’s so many reasons that tells Kim that this isn’t something she should consider, that he’s probably just going to give her a look and dismiss her.
And Kim definitely will be risking whatever chance she has left of ever being offered a spot in intelligence.
All this is valid, and if anyone else knew of her plans, they’d agree that she’d be justified to just scrap this whole idea. But every day of this job is a lesson, and Kim has learnt a lot since starting. And she’s learnt a lot since Voight came in as their new Sargent—especially when Adam was hired.
Kim was passed over because Voight thought she was sleeping with Adam. And that hurt, hurt more than Kim thinks she’d ever be able to express in words.
But through that, Kim learnt things about herself. That she’s determined, and this is her dream, and that she can still succeed and achieve even when she’s passed over. And that she should just stick to what she’s doing, to prove herself, to show that everything she does, especially in her personal life, doesn’t affect what kind of cop she is.
A lesson that came in handy when she was shot, and he actually offered her the spot. That she knew she wanted to earn it in a different way, not just because she was shot.
Kim also learned something else. That this job may her everything, and that intelligence may be her dream, but there are some things that’s worth being flexible over.
That Adam is worth being flexible for.
The day they got together, Kim had already been passed over. And by dating Adam, she was risking it happening again, but she had learnt that she just needs to keep what she’s doing, showing she can be an uncompromised cop, even while dating in house. And that Adam, she wanted Adam so much that she wasn’t going to deprive herself of something that could be so good just for an opportunity she may never get.
And then she proved herself, even when dating Adam, and Kim knows her choice was right, even if she turned the promotion down.
And it was after then, even though she knows just how much intelligence is her dream, that she knew that Adam—being with him—is her dream, too. And Kim has no control, not really, over her intelligence dream. All she can do is keep being a good cop, and hoping that it pays off. But she has control over her and Adam, about the dream she has for them, of making sure the ring on her finger actually means something.
That lesson, perhaps, was the most important one for her to learn. Jobs come and go, even something as amazing as intelligence. Kim wants to one day be something higher than a detective, so she may have to leave intelligence anyway, and there’s more units and good positions in the cpd to be in, even if intelligence is her dream.
But soulmates? That person who just gets you, that person you love with your whole heart? That’s one in a lifetime, and that’s who Adam is. Adam is her love and who knows what her future, job wise, holds, but Kim knows that Adam is her future.
Knows that she wants Adam to be her future, wants the life they are trying so hard to get, even if things are tough right now.
Kim can feel that future slip away. She can feel it in any slightly edged remark they exchange, can feel it in how they keep pushing off the wedding planning, can feel it in how sometimes she’s so reluctant to go home.
And she doesn’t want it to slip away. She wants Adam. She wants him to be hers for the rest of her life, for them to grow old together. She wants to be his bride, his wife, the mother of his kids. She wants all this, but she’s been feeling like she’s scrabbling against a flat wall, unable to climb over. Like she knows what’s on the other side, a happy life, but she doesn’t know how to get there.
And Kim wants to know. And Voight— Voight is the answer to that.
If you had told when she first met Hank Voight that one day she’d be going to him for relationship advice, Kim would’ve strongly recommended you get your head checked out. Her Sargent is a tough man, who so very rarely shows his softer side.
Kim might even doubt he has one, if it wasn’t for those two times in the hospital, when Zoey was critical and when she was shot.
But things are spiralling, spiralling in a way she does not want them to spiral, in her and Adam’s relationship and she doesn’t know how to stop it. Kim doesn’t think they need relationship counselling—they’re not that messy, not to her—but she needs advice.
It was a realisation that came to her one late night. Adam’s arm was wrapped around her waist, him snoring softly next to her and if she closed her eyes, she could almost forget the epic fight they had not five minutes before bed.
Although, Kim wonders, can it even be a fight, not to mention able to be described as epic, if it was done in hushed whispers? Olinsky and his daughter were in their living room, so they used muted tones, but the words were biting, almost more than any of their other fights ever were.
It was in this realisation that Kim also realised that she doesn’t exactly know anyone with a thriving and successful marriage. Anyone she went to school with who is married doesn’t have the same relationship and life dynamics as she does, and Kim’s socialisation tends to just be limited to those she works with or the other first responders.
And first responders have such tough jobs, and such because of the nature of it, relationships aren’t exactly the most successful thing about their lives.
The only person her age who Kim could think of who had a successful marriage is Natalie, but she’s just met the doctor and asking a grieving widow—no matter how long you’ve known them—the secrets to a successful marriage is just cruel.
Olinsky has been married a long time, even despite everything, him and Meredith are only separated. But the very act of them being separated perhaps disqualifies him from being someone to seek marriage advice from. Especially as, from what Kim has gathered, they seemed to have a flawed relationship anyway, despite being in love.
There’s always Herrmann, of course. But while Kim gets along with the man, the thought of asking him this felt too personal. And she wasn’t sure if he’d be much help. He has a very successful marriage, and his job is tough like hers, but the dynamics just didn’t feel right for who she wants advice from. Adam and her, they’re stubborn and closed off and they need a guide like that.
Platt has a successful relationship, but she’s already someone Kim goes to. A great help, even if Kim ends up getting more information than she wishes for, but she needs a second pair of eyes and a fresh perspective.
And finally, Antonio. Antonio has been a great help to her when it comes to the job, but he’s divorced and Kim’s not sure if he’d be the best person to go to.
Which just leaves Voight. And as far as Kim knows, Voight’s the only one in their circle who’s had a successful marriage.
Of course, Voight doesn’t like personal talk. And Kim rather gets the impression that only a small handful of people gets to see Voight talking about his wife, especially as he’s a widow. But she has to try.
Taking a deep breath, Kim heads out the locker room and towards the bullpen—towards Voight’s office. It’s after hours and everyone is home or on a stakeout, and Voight’s doing paperwork. Kim had texted Adam saying she’ll be late home, not telling him it’s because she’s going to his boss for relationship advice.
Kim hesitates before she knocks on his office door, and she nearly runs away-- again—but then Voight looks up at that moment, their eyes locking.
Well, she thinks, here goes nothing.
Kim raps lightly on the door, Voight still watching her, curiously, as she does so. He waves her in before she even finished her tap and she opens the door cautiously, offering him a half smile.
“Burgess.” He gives her a nod. “Shouldn’t you be home by now?”
“Yeah. I just—I wanted to ask you something, if that’s alright? If you’re busy I can go—” Kim tells him. There’s half a second pause, but then Voight’s waving at the seat in front of his desk, telling her to sit down. She does.
“If it’s about intelligence, I don’t have room.” Voight says before she can start and Kim’s certain that she turns red, cringing at the thought that he might think of her that desperate.
“No, it’s nothing about that. It’s well, uh,” She really didn’t think this through, and she wishes she thought more about how to ask him. Voight just raises his eyebrows, leaning back slightly, waiting for her to finish.
“Well, you were married, right? And you know that Adam and I...well you know. And I just want to know—well, how? How did you do it? We see so much and we all have our own issues on top of that and I just. I don’t know how to make a marriage work.” Saying the words out loud makes it hit Kim, makes the reality so much more real, and her heart twists. Twists that she can’t believe in them, that she needs help to do something she should already know how to do. Twists at how much just admitting this has lifted a weight of her shoulders, showing just how bad she is at this.
Surprise is written all over Voight’s face; he had clearly not expected this to be what she was going to say. It feels like eternity, Voight just looking at her, before he speaks.
“Camille—my wife—is to thank for that.” He begins, leaning forward, looking serious but with a softness to his expression. “She was... An angel. Patient but firm, and she didn’t take any shit and no work excuses.”
There’s another pause, and Kim waits patiently, just glad that he didn’t just dismiss her, or tell her that she had no business even asking.
“I was wrong, to judge you and Ruzek. You’re both professionals and I can see you’re well suited to each other. My Camille was a romantic, and I think she would’ve been quite taken with the pair of you—and please, take that as a compliment. I don’t think she would’ve liked Erin with Halstead. Me, I’m not so much of one, just do your work and I’m good. So I won’t be much help,” Kim gets it, understands, but she can’t help but feel deflated at that.
“But,” Voight continues before she can stand up to go. “You’re good police, Burgess. Both you and Ruzek are. I’ll tell you some things my Camille taught me, and I hope that it helps.”
It doesn’t take long for Voight to say all he had to say, him saying everything very manner of fact in that way of his, but Kim appreciates the gesture for what it is. That this is Voight showing his belief in her—in Adam, too—and that means just as much as Voight sharing this with her.
Kim thinks that Camille must’ve been a wonderful woman, thinking about how Voight’s lips turned up slightly, his eyes lighting up that little bit more, as he repeated what his wife had taught him to her. And a wise woman, she thinks, as his words replays in her mind as she heads home, feeling more certain and confident in her relationship, in the future of her relationship, than she ever has been.
“Hey,” Kim immediately greets Adam with warmth in her voice when she gets home, wrapping her arms around him, cuddling into his body. She doesn’t miss the lookout surprise on his face, however, or how it quickly fades, him wrapping his arms around her tight and sighing contently.
“Hey, darlin’. Where have you been?” He asks, kissing the top of her head.
“Just had to finish some stuff up at work.” Kim answers, talking into him as she still cuddles to him.
“Hm? Anything important?”
“Nothing that’s more important than being with you,” Kim answers truthfully, Voight’s words ringing around her head. She then tilts her head up, still in his arms, so she could look at him. “I was thinking. About us getting our own place? Since we can’t decide right now, I’m just going to move in with you. Living together is more important to me then where we’re living.”
“Darlin’ no, I want to give you what you want. We’ll find a place,” Adam shakes his head and Kim steals a quick kiss before continuing.
“I know we will. I’m not saying to stop looking, just. I want to actually live in one place, so until we do, I’m ending my lease and moving in here, properly.” Kim explains.
“Well, I have no complaints about that,” Adam grins, kissing her. “What made you decide this?”
“Just got reminded about what’s really important. And that’s us. Not where we live, or when we get married or anything. Just me and you and our love.” Kim answers, smiling up at him, her smile only grinning as she sees the affect her words have on him.
“I love you, darlin’,”
“I love you, too. Now, to what’s actually important right now—you, lifting me up and taking me to bed, right this second. I need you to fuck me, future husband.” Kim says, watching as Adam’s eyes darken, him gripping her tighter.
“Your wish is my command, future Mrs Ruzek,”

I was tagged by my darling @morethanprinceofcats <3 to share my favorite 10 female characters from 10 media piece and tag 10 people
1. Muriel Fisher (The Time of the Angels) - Muriel is a repressed woman, an untalented poet, a spinster by the standard of her time at the age of 24. She is cold, withdrawn and full of desire yet she never finds a way to become the desirer always the desired, she tries to set up the men who is so interested in her with her cousin because because of her repressed desires for this men, who only reminds her the youth she has and probably the desires draws her deeper into her psyche which is full of outside evil, she has this fear of menacing evil and she reflects on it every second of her life.
2. Eleanor Vance (Haunting of the Hill House) - The downtrodden and miserable caretaker. Eleanor's loneliness and unhappiness which is tied to her mother always gets me. She feels without a roof, a house because she never felt loved by the people who should've loved her, then she tried to find company within people she has never met before that summer, she failed greatly, all those people almost after meeting her started forgetting/ignoring her and only a haunted house accepted her, like a lover poisoned with the idea of possessing and how should a woman who wished nothing but being taken by romantic, paternal or platonic lovers respond, she would let herself get possessed...
3. Jane Eyre (Jane Eyre) - She started as an orphan and without anything or anyone in her life, ended up with marrying the man she loved. Gracious, self-satisfied (caused by the absence of the outside love and help), strong-willed a gothic heroine suffered from no Ophelia syndrome, nor advantaged by the privilege of money most gothic heroines advantaged from I always felt a kinship for her for these reasons. And I know she speaks to many, because there are women who read gothic novels but never felt like Catherine's but find themselves in Heathcliff in his disadvantaged (which seems more like a freedom to Cathy) position of rank and loneliness.
4. Cassandra (Illiad, Trojan Women, Agamennon) - Silenced, abandoned by her god, her knowledge of a coming doom to is to be never believed by others, all her life she lives with the fall of Troy in her head, and her death but she has nothing in her power to stop it. And there's her mad-scene like the one of Ophelia's but it's driven more from exhaustion rather than passion in Cassandra's case.
5. Camille Preaker (Sharp Objects) - With her life written all over her body, she carries the lovelessness, motherlessness like a slave carries the fact he is a slave over his shoulders, the cruel fate of hers never to be get taken off is a mark on her. I feel her pain and reading the book in the summer of my abandoned journalism experience she struck me like an inner child, biting through my heart reminding all the things I hated to remember, she is my companion in loneliness.
6. Anne Catherick (The Woman in White) - I always thought Anne deserved so much happiness, but her only role was to provide truth to novels main heroine Laura. Her unfortunate life has no white weddings, or big houses waiting for her at the end, and she knows this, even though she still helps Laura (And I always imagined Anne as falling a little in love with Walter I don't know why exactly, but in return she is found less of a beauty considering Laura) because her mother was once so kind to her. Imagine being lonely enough to be able to never forget one persons kindness... I don't have to imagine...
7. Jane Fairfax (Emma) - I know Emma hates her, but in return I hated Emma (I know I'm a grown woman but in elementary school I could've thrown the book out of the window every-time Emma did something spoiled), I always imagine Jane as a woman who tries her hardest to find a place for herself in society, she is always trying to improve herself because she feels inferior amongst all these people, who has wealth, homes, and adoring parents. She should feel envious in return towards Emma as Emma feels towards her but she does not? She is full of labour, and strive towards herself.
8. Eponine (Les Misarebles) - A woman sacrificing herself for unrequited love with the knowledge of that the man she loved loved another. Her heart is so big! Big enough to love all the people she fights alongside with, big enough to love the woman who should have been her rival, even though I feel like she is an atonement for her parents sins (which I always felt was kind of sappy) I still love her arc because she never gives up, and the reasons of her fighting is not just to rebel against her parents but because she love these people...
9. Helena (Midsummer Night's Dream) - She puts herself in humility in the name of love, and I know the audience is to laugh at her antics and not sympathize with her, I believe what she does is the truest to loving. If she was a man not a woman (yes even in the modern days) people would want her to succeed and rather than laugh at her audience would be encouraging her in her romantic war. Helena does what a sensible lover should do, she pursues what she loves even though to the societies pity.
10. Mariana (Measure for Measure) - Never seen in the play but a woman known to be rejected, an isolated woman. I love her because of the Tennyson's poem probably...

And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, let me live that fantasy (chap 1)
Ao3 LINK
Summary: On the eve of the ball of Hunter's Moon, a day long celebration with hunts and parties, Prince Alec receives some news from the Queen that forces him to consider his future. Still reeling from his decision, Alec comes face to face with the same golden-eyed boy he met a ball similar to this one, twelve years ago.
Soon, it becomes clear that Alec's childhood enigma is none other than Prince Magnus of the neighbouring enemy kingdom, on his way to inherit his father's throne.
Chapter 1 square filled= Hunt (for @shadowhunterbingo)
..........
A Prince doesn’t cry for his parents like a normal child. A Prince is supposed to be strong against all adversities, big or small. Being afraid of the dark, or missing one’s parents is definitely not a condoned manner for a responsible Prince. Alec’s tutors had told him so more than once.
So Alec would put on the bravest face he could muster, and get through the day, and wait for those five minutes before bedtime when the Queen would come into his room to check in on him, so he could beg her to tell him the story of King Jonathan and the mighty fearsome dragon Sammael.
Every time, the story started the same. A thousand years ago, there was the mighty dragon Sammael who ruled over the Five Kingdoms. He terrorized the people, looted them, and kept them starving and poor. But every rebellion against him failed, for Sammael could breathe fire, and would summon shadows that darkened the Sun itself, and attacked the rebels until they died off one by one. Then the mighty dragon would plunge the world into darkness, and sleep sound, knowing no-one but him could bring the light back.
Until one night, a simple hunter named Jonathan Shadowhunter, saw the pain and suffering for humans and animals alike. Jonathan, ever faithful to the Angel Raziel, prayed for a miracle, when Raziel, moved by his devotion and determination, sent a comet to light his way to the dragon. A whole day and a whole night Jonathan walked, till he reached the Castle where Sammael lived, and challenged him to a duel. Sammael, ever so evil, plunged the world in darkness while Jonathan tried to hunt him. The comet kept shining brighter than the Moon, and finally, just before the first ray of dawn hit the ground, Jonathan plunged an enchanted dagger into the heart of the dragon. The comet was thereby named Hunter’s Moon, for it became the light of the night while he fought, and Jonathan was crowned the King of Idris.
Alec would listen to the story, fascinated, while Maryse reminded him how he is descended from Jonathan himself, who saved the world from great evil, and it is Alec’s duty to protect the very country Jonathan fought for. Then realities of a Prince would crash in, and Alec would be put to bed, despite his wishes.
-----------------
Logically, he knows that the story is fake. It has to be. Dragons are a myth made to scare young children into bedtime and to keep them in line. But yet, Alec can’t help but wonder if even the great King Jonathan had to spend his time choosing fabrics for a ball.
Maybe he should pray for a miracle and see where that goes.
“Your Highness, you have to choose one by the end of the hour.” Underhill’s reminder breaks Alec out of his reverie.
“I’m aware, Andrew.” Alec looks back at the fabrics swatches strewn in front of him, a deep sigh making its way out of his chest. “Where is my sister? Can you tell her I require her assistance?”
“I’m sorry, Princess Isabelle is currently at the market, Your Highness.” The bodyguard answers apologetically. “Her Majesty has tasked the Princess with overseeing the caterary and housing arrangements for our guests.”
Alec tries to imagine what would be worse, choosing fabrics to hang at the ballroom or choosing the correct rooms for the guests from four of the Five Kingdoms so there isn’t a war declared over who got the better view and is clearly being favouritized. For the moment, Alec does not envy his sister.
He finally decides. “Go with the metallic gold and navy blue ones. The Queen ordered the ballroom to be painted white for Hunter’s Moon, and this would add some contrast points in the view.  This way our coat of arms can be represented as well.”
Underhill motions the servants to pack the rest and order the fabrics Alec has chosen. “Immaculate as always, Your Highness.”
“You flatter me.” Alec brushes off the compliment, taking a deep breath now that he’s free from the hell of fabric swatches. “This ball has to go off without a hitch. It’s what my father would have wanted. He only got to host twice in his lifetime. Both times there was at least one war waging at our borders, at least one Kingdom that rejected the invite to the Hunt. It was his dream to see the Five Kingdoms united under one roof again.”
“His Majesty would be proud of the man you are today, Prince Alec.” Underhill says reverently. “I’m sure this time, all the Kingdoms will come together, no matter what.”
Alec looks around at the flurry of preparation, every person putting their all to make the event picture perfect.
“We can only hope so.”
-------------------
“There are only four days left till the guests start arriving. How are we doing on the matter or arrangements?”
Alec feels like a little boy again, standing in front of his mother, his sword-fighting instructor telling her about his only above average performance in the test, where expectations started at perfection. He swallows, reminding himself of his adulthood, and plants his feet firmly on the ground.
“Three of the four kingdoms have already sent their regards. King Lucien and Queen Camille have sent forth the eating requirements of their parties as well.”
Maryse looks over the checklist, frowning at some of the more unusual palates of the guest parties, making a mental note to check on the meat supply for the event. Lupine and Wampyria are the two kingdoms most vulnerable to the protein deficiency disease in the Five Kingdoms. “And the rest?”
“Our representative at the Faeliwne Kingdom has informed us that Queen Auraline has already started the trek down the Shadow Mountains. They will be here first, I presume.”
“And what about Magii?”
Alec shares a glance with Isabelle, the latter busying herself with the servants asking for her attention about the details of the preparation.
“Well, Alec?” Maryse asks again, growing impatient.
Alec heaves a sigh inwardly. “King Asmodeus has sent no such letter. And we haven't had a representative in his kingdom since the last war.”
“What about our spies then?”
“They’re not sure.” Isabelle answers this time, before remembering something else. “One of them informed me about the King having a fallout with Prince Magnus, and in the heat of the moment, apparently he fell sick over his old heart disease. But everything is kept under a strict need-to-know basis, and even our best spies can only salvage so much.”
“That’s unfortunate.” Sadness and regret crowd Maryse’s expression, then clears after a moment. “What do you propose we should do now, Alec?”
“Me?” Alec asks, slightly off-balance.
“Yes, you.” Maryse claps once, and the servants and guards clear out the throne room, Isabelle leaving as well, excited after receiving something important from one of the guards. She pats Alec on the back once before gesturing at the guards outside to close the door.
“I’ve been thinking,” Maryse straightens in her seat at the throne, “after your father’s death, I’ve ruled over close to a decade now. I would like you to succeed me for the throne once Hunter’s Moon passes.”
Alec feels like someone just yanked the ground from under his feet. “Mother, I-”
“You have to succeed me one day, my boy.” Maryse descends from the throne, touching Alec’s face in an uncharacteristically motherly manner. “It might as well be now. You know I come from the House of Trueblood. Last week, I received news of my brother, the head of the Trueblood House, falling severely ill.”
“I- er- I wasn’t aware.” Alec looks down, torn. “Is there anything we can do?”
“Not really. The doctors have given him a year to live, maybe less. For the moment, he’s the best possible way he can be.” Maryse smiles, melancholic. “To be frank, Max’s news only pushed me further towards the decision I was already considering. I’ve been a Queen for a long time. I wasn’t meant to rule in the first place, but rather be an advisor to your father while he ruled as the rightful king. But after his death, I had to ascend to ruling. Now, since you’re already old enough to ascend, I would like to spend my last years with my family, starting with the little time I have left with my brother.”
“Okay, then.” Alec swallows deep, before straightening his shoulders, standing up to the full length of the Princely manner he’s been born with. “I will not fail you, Your Majesty.”
“I know you won’t.” Maryse goes back to the throne, her motherly nature falling away as the persona of the Queen of Idris comes out once more. “Now, I believe I asked your decision in regards to our, albeit potential, guests from Magixia.”
“They are most likely to not make an appearance. But we will make arrangements nonetheless.” Alec says. “Better to be prepared for everything. And if there is any food leftover, we can always throw a feast for the villagers in the kingdom.”
“That’s a smart proposition.” Maryse nods. “And what about the Hunt?”
“I’ve instructed John to handle the games for the Hunt.”
“Which one?” A hint of a smile appears on Maryse’s face.
“The one from the House of the Wayland, Mother.” Alec answers with a knowing grin, the two of them well aware of the Jonathan debacle of Idris’s high nobility. “Brocelind is a majestic forest, and no-one knows it better than him due to his research on the forest itself.”
“While I appreciate the delegation, do you think Jonathan can handle this responsibility?” Maryse raises an eyebrow.
“I’m sure of it.” Alec answers confidently. “In any case. I have also instructed Lord Jace to help him in the preparations. Jace will keep him on his feet, and John can make sure he doesn’t burn the forest down before the Hunt can even start.”
“A sensible pair.” Maryse concludes. “With the work you’ve done, this might as well be your first year of hosting, Alec.”
“I only did my part, Mother.” Alec bows. “Isabelle helped with the rest. Everyone is anxious to have the best Ball, since the comet wouldn’t be here for another twelve years.”
“With leaders like you two, I have no doubt this will be our most perfect Hunter’s Moon yet.”
---------------
The five days go by in a flurry of activities, Royalties from neighbouring kingdoms arriving with their own troops, the servants running around the palace like little clockwork creatures trying to keep the place pristine and the event on schedule. Alec’s headache increases every time the Queen asks him to play the diplomat and Prince to the countless dignitaries hailing from the three kingdoms united under their roof.
Finally, on the morning of the Hunt, Alec wakes up when it’s still dark near the horizon. He opens the window facing the forest, the chilly air of dawn bringing a shiver down his spine. Alec throws on his dressing gown, the navy crest of gold flames sewn into the chest of the gown shines in the fading moonlight.
Alec closes the door quietly behind him, the guards at his door at high alarm as their Prince tiptoes out at the oddest hour before the most important event of the decade. He assures them, giving them reprieve for the hour, and heads to the throne room.
The throne room is plunged in darkness while not in use, the only two shining witchlights adorned near the twin thrones, the dark metal glinting off against the dancing flames. Alec looks, unsure of what he’s supposed to do once he’s king, how he’s supposed to lead.
“You’ll be a great ruler, you know.”
Alec whirls around, wincing as his eyes try to adjust to the sudden influx of light into the darkness of the room. Isabelle mumbles an apology, and puts the witchstone on a lightholder at the strategy table so it illuminates the room equally.
“Sorry for sneaking up on you like that.”
“Couldn’t sleep either?” Alec takes a seat on the stairs leading up to the dais of the thrones. Isabelle sits next to him.
“Nope. Too many things happening all at once.” The light from the witchstone paints the siblings into a silvery glow. “I heard from Mother about her decision. She’s making the right choice.”
“You think so?” Alec turns to face her, “I don’t know the first thing about ruling a kingdom.”
“What are you talking about?” Isabelle asks. “It’s all we learn since the moment we’re born.”
“That’s just it, Isabelle.” Alec rubs his palms together for warmth. “I know how to rule a kingdom, yes, but only in theory. A kingdom is much more than books. One wrong move, and we could have a war at our hand. One wrong decision, and we could lose all our treasure, and our subjects will be penniless, begging and starving. I’m not taking responsibility for a castle, I’m going to have the mantle to care about hundreds of Idrisans. Their well-being, their happiness. Their lives itself.”
“And you will do a fantastic job of it.” Isabelle assures him. “Don’t be so hard on yourself, the Idrisans you’re so worried about, already think you will make a great king.”
Isabelle is their Spymaster, keeping track of all the gossip, rumors and potential information in and out of Idris. And Alec is once again glad to have her by his side. “Thank you. For everything.”
“Any time.”
----------------
“Lady Roberts, you have excellent tracking skills.” Alec observes.
The trek to the Brocelind forest started as soon as the clock struck six, and the parties had gathered before Alec, looking at him to announce the start of the day-long hunt. Alec had been practiced and poised, everything expected of a prince, and more. And now, after almost six hours, the tally for the kills for each kingdom is starting to spur competition for the title of Hunter’s Moon champion.
“Thank you, Your Highness. I will always be a tracker before I am a noble.” The dark-skinned girl bows. Maia Roberts have recently risen to the rank of nobility in the Lupine kingdom, where honour and loyalty to the king are ranked higher than blood or ascendancy. Alec has long wondered if Idris should implement such laws too.
A cry goes out from the northern corners of Brocelind, and Alec nudges his horse around with a simple tap. By the time he’s reached the spot, there’s a crowd of Idrisan nobles and guests alike, all standing around something he can’t quite see from horseback.
Alec descends, handing over the reins to Jace, who wears a dark expression. “What is it?”
“Lord Morgenstern has managed to capture one of the Kostaris , Prince Alec.”
“That’s skillful of him.” Alec remarks, his eyes trained on the crowd cheering and chattering at the prized and normally elusive animal. “What about it?”
“He’s going to put on a show before he actually makes the kill.”
That captures Alec's attention. “What?”
“Oh come on Alec, you and I both remember Morgenstern’s streak of cruelty from fencing classes and summer camps. That poor thing would have been better off dead.”
If it was anyone else, Alec would have had them demoted for the day. But it’s Jace- Alec’s closest and oldest of friends. His words, however impertinent, carry an amount of gravitas that no-one else’s will.
“What exactly do you expect me to do here?” Alec looks at his friend, but Jace is looking away from him. He follows his eyesight, finally reaching his point of interest.
“If you want to go out with Lady Roberts, might I suggest actually telling her rather than just gazing forlornly like a hero in a romance novel?” Alec comments.
“I’m not trying to get into her pants. I’m noticing her expression.” Jace’s voice is serious for once, and that sets Alec’s skin on edge. Jace is never serious.
“Is this really the picture we want to paint of ourselves to the four kingdoms on the first day they reunite as one? This sort of brute force and sadistic torture on an innocent in the name of celebration?” Jace finally turns to Alec, his eyes sharp and bright.
Alec understands the point in an instant, his back going stiff as he sheds the masks of a gracious host and dons his usual persona of a crowned king in line to the throne. “Lord Morgenstern.” He calls out over the chatter of the crowd, “Please stop dawdling. If you don’t want to make the kill, I suggest you set the poor creature free.”
“But whyever so, Your Highness ?” Morgenstern's voice makes Alec’s inside lurch with unease. “I captured it, it belongs to me. I can do whatever I want with it. Besides, one Kostari is worth a hundred points in today’s games. I’m doing Idris a favour anyway.”
“As the Crown Prince of Idris, I command you to stop whatever it is you’re planning to do.”
“I won this, fair and square. The Laws of Hunter’s Moon wavers neither for a fool nor for a prince.” Jonathan sneers, before bowing in a clear semblance of mockery. “ Your Grace .”
“The Law also insists that no innocent should be harmed unless the absolute need arises.” Alec doesn’t let the anger inside deviate his tone from the usual calmness. “A ceremonial hunting party can hardly be called an absolute necessity. The poor creature is suffering in that trap.” Alec changes his stance to an open warning. “Save it, or kill it.”
Morgenstern opens his mouth, no doubt to say something undermining Alec’s direct order. But he doesn’t get a chance before a dagger launches itself at the rope holding the cage together, snapping it. The cage falls apart, the Kostari running away as soon as it can.
The entire group erupts into chatter, some remarking in relief for the poor creature, some Wampyres clearly disappointed the show Alec and Jonathan were putting on ended before any bloodshed. Alec makes a mental note to remind Isabelle to keep an eye out for them.
But before anything else, he turns around slowly, wanting to see the person saving the Kostari . There is a crowd of five standing near a line of Sunbursts blooming along the edge of the trees. Alec finds the man standing ahead of the rest of the crew, the one holding the empty scabbard, no wonder the same one who threw the dagger a minute before. Alec’s blood runs cold as the man looks back at him.
Eyes as bright as molten gold.
It’s the same boy from the night of the Hunter’s Moon twelve years ago.

I really really like your analyses of the classes and aspects. if you could, please make an analysis of the maid of mind as I would like to see your thoughts on this classpect!
Thank you so much! I'd love to describe the Maid of Mind for you! This is actually one that I recently looked into myself, although it's not unusual for me to hop on the merry-go-round of rotating Classpects depending on the day.
The Maid of Mind is going to be quite the powerhouse, capable of creating endless personas for any given situation, performing logical leaps only another Mind player could follow, and increasing their potential choices, all while keeping many of their fellow players at a safe emotional distance. I'll be drawing quite a bit from my own personal experience here, as it's one of the best examples I can think of for this Classpect, given that the Maid begins at the mercy of their Aspect, and eventually must learn to create it for themselves.
I grew up in an upper middle class family, and there was a great deal of social expectations placed on all of us. Nothing too extreme, like arranged marriages or courtly etiquette, but it was expected that we kept our personal squabbles aside for the sake of maintaining the peaceful family dynamic. Family gatherings at holidays were rather predictable, with adults chattering on about mundane daily activities and the accomplishments of their kids. As I got older, I began to see the cracks in the careful illusion that had been crafted around me: my parents' loveless marriage, continuing for my sake; an aunt whose narcissistic and possessive tendencies led us to have two separate Christmases instead of one; a cousin who was disowned by her parents and taken in by other family members after she shattered the delicate illusion through an accidental pregnancy.
For most of that time, we all tried to play the "good kid" role. I acted the part of the straight, cisgender gifted kid, mild-mannered and conservative. I built this persona simply to survive and, at times, believed in it wholeheartedly, losing myself in the process. Choices were made for me, and my destiny seemed to be set in stone: go to college, start my career, and live the same illusion as my family. That all changed, though, when I finally decided enough was enough and came out, first as bisexual, then as transgender. I became outspoken, rebelling against the social mores I'd grown up with, and for a while, I was accused of trying to be "different" for the hell of it. Now, I find myself in a more balanced position, and I'm able to deftly change my outer persona at will in order to achieve my goals, code-switching effortlessly in the middle of social interactions. I see my own identity as something cobbled together from the choices I've made and things I've learned, rather than one unchanging core.
As such, I could conceivably be called a Maid of Mind. I'm constantly making logical connections between wildly different subjects, which is part of why I enjoy Classpect analysis (and, indeed, analysis in general) so very much. I have a shifting sense of identity that evolves with each new discovery I make about the world, and I don't feel particularly tied down to one destiny. I have virtually no regrets about choices I've made, since they've all led me to this point in my life where I feel I've formed a more actualized version of myself, though I do often think about where different choices would have taken me. Were I to take on this Classpect in SBURB, upon reaching God Tier, I'd be capable of creating new opportunities for myself to succeed within our session, forming intelligent (albeit soulless) constructs to aid in the fight, and generally being the intellectual powerhouse that ultimately creates the plan that ensures our success.
I almost want to start calling myself the Maid of Mind, if only because it would mean I've finally "Maid" up my Mind, which is infinitely funny to me, but I digress. Hopefully this helps you get a feeling for the Maid of Mind! They're a much more cerebral Classpect, as you can imagine, so their powers would be a bit less flashy than others, but they'd be no less effective upon maturing.
