I’m probably off base here, but the implication I got from the game was that Gristol WAS the Delugionists. As in, he alone was it in the entirety, the only one funding it, and the Psychonauts just assumed it was multiple people.
There’s probably something in the game that contradicts that but that was my first impression
see, i like that interpretation a lot, but i don't know if it lines up with what we see in game. when we're first introduced to the Delugionists in the cutscene after Loboto's mind, Sasha has these lines:
[transcript: "She was a monster - a ruthless, power-hungry psychic who drowned hundreds of her own countrymen. Nevertheless, she still has her loyal followers to this day. This file documents recent activity believed to be the work of these modern day "Deluginaries".]
(side note, is it Delugionists or Deluginaries? the game can't seem to make up its mind.)
to me this implies that a) there have been small cells of pro-Maligula supporters for a long time, and they've long been a thorn in the Psychonauts' side; and b), they're very widespread. it's not a great screenshot, but there are five locations on that map, spread all over the world.
i dunno - i guess it's possible, but i look at how the Psychonauts are apparently tracking multiple global cells of Delugionists (i don't have screens/transcripts to hand, but some of the idle dialogue in the Nerve Center has the agents discussing the different groups they're monitoring)... and then i look at Gristol. i'm gonna be honest, the impression that i get from him is that he couldn't mastermind his way out of a paper bag :P his plan is laughably terrible, and from figments and the absolute mess his suite in the casino was in it seems like he spends most of his free time lazing around and eating caviar.
i don't think there's anything in the game that directly contradicts it, but i don't know if there's any direct support for it, either. i can definitely imagine Gristol meeting up with other Delugionists, maybe even wielding a sizeable influence with them due to his status, but he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to be able to orchestrate a one-man show like that is the vibe i get. (it probably also depends on how much faith you put in the Psychonauts' intel capabilities, too! it feels like the game wants you to think they're a cool and competent spy organisation, but then it keeps portraying them as just absolutely useless and incompetent as soon as you start looking any deeper, and i've never been able to work out whether that's on purpose or not.)

if you like the characters and picking out the parts that work ward is a lot of fun actually. there are genuine and valuable criticisms of it but the culture about it is getting kinda weird. love a solid post unpacking the problems or making jokes about it but if your instinctual reaction to seeing other people talk about ward is to feel upset and/or join the conversation to talk about how its the absolute worst you might want to consider if you would feel better blacklisting the tag
if youre curious about ward give it a try. its always gonna be a lot cooler and easier online for people to make fun of something; maybe you like it better than you expect. or maybe its awful. you can always stop reading

anyone else annoyed with portrayals that make Nm and the Bad Sanses and Error out to be “actually innocent uwu guys who aren’t actually in the wrong bc they’re traumatized” and make Ink and Dream out to be “actually the real bad guys actually cuz umm Ink soulless and Dream no care abt his brother actually”?
Like people probably think it’s subversive or something when tbh it’s really not, at least not anymore. Maybe at one point it wasn’t a very popular interpretation of those guys (to have them be The Real Victims Actually) but, it sure is popular nowadays.
Like I’m not against sympathetic portrayals of the bad guys or anything (I’m literally a For The Forgotten Ones enjoyer)
but like, idk it gets on my nerves a bit when people try to make them Not The Bad Ones Actually They Did No Wrong Ever™️. Especially when it’s at the expense of the Star Sanses (Ink, Dream, and sometimes even Blue)’s characters.
It just feels like villainizing the Stars (especially Ink and Dream) for no reason other than to gesture at a “”subversive and interesting”” story, making these interpretations out to be more complex than they actually are.

I totally believe you, but I'd be interested to see your receipts of haitham being nice if you're willing to share~
hello weary traveler please take a look at my wares~
top ten (read: 3) reasons alhaitham is a SWEETIE w/ receipts:
1) he’s got really good manners:
*leaves to the entrance to wait patiently for you so he can say goodbye* and i just like how offended he seems at the implication in the last one
these voicelines in particular stick out to convey that he doesn’t really want to be responsible for causing others trouble:
also tbh basically all of his about lines are just him talking about people’s good qualities, which always makes me a little sad when i think about most of the voicelines about him in comparison rip
here’s some faves though tighnari’s especially sticks out in regard to alhaitham being nice i think:
2) he does a lot of things for other people:
“i’m not going to field any questions” proceeds to take us to his house, gather a bunch of books to help us understand, and then field all of our questions🤔 also just the entire concept of him being able to be talked into being acting grand sage at ALL
also not included but little things like taking the time to teach us how to use the knowledge capsules, taking the aaru villager’s feelings into account/getting shani to talk, and just generally taking the time to carefully address the rest of The Squad’s™️ questions/concerns during sumeru’s archon quests
3) and perhaps some people will disagree with this one but i just think he has a very kind view of humanity:
(⬆️ from sq also not cropped cause pretty🥰)
i feel that if someone is so intimately aware of the limits and faults of humanity while also still having an innate curiosity about other people and an affinity for finding people’s positive qualities it’s indicative of an inherently kind/forgiving way of thinking
i can and will defend any of these examples if anyone disagrees😤 i spend every moment of my life ready for a debate😤
but seriously lol idk there’s just SO MUCH that he does and says that can be interpreted as kind if you look for it and connect it, like this isn’t even all the examples i could think of off the top of my head
also thank you anon for giving me an excuse to talk about him and how he is GOOD i owe you my life sorry for adding so much lol
my sources for your convenience: SQ = alhaitham’s story quest, TP = teapot dialogue, KH = kaveh’s hangout, PoP = the parade of providence event
