so i was thinking about this post, specifically the comparison between Ianthe/Babs and Silas/Colum. because on the surface, they're both necromancers whose relationship to their cavalier seems wholly consumptive. but: Silas differs from Ianthe on one big, key point -- he refuses to ascend to lyctorhood. he has been indoctrinated since birth to view his cavalier as only a tool for him; Colum was quite literally made for him, the 8th house breeds batteries, but when the chips are down silas refuses. he tried to kill Ianthe for it!! like, he was the only one in the room who thought what Ianthe did was so fucked up that she should die for it.

and this is so fascinating!! because one could potentially interpret the 8th house's treatment of their cavaliers like Mercymorn trying to innoculate her house against the grief that destroyed her for 10,000 years. she loved Cristabel too much, and she never wanted that to happen to anyone else. but the thing is, I don't think it worked. at best, I can see Silas becoming like Augustine "human plex" the First. you are not immune to grief etc.

and i think this is going to be important like, idk. the 8th house is the only dead Canaan House pair that hasn't yet had their arc concluded. and IMO, i think the 9th house wasnt the only house to have their dynamic be challenged by and radically shift due to the events of GtN!! that scene where Silas invites Gideon to "take tea" and then tells Colum to kill her -- Colum refuses, Silas lets Gideon go, and we never see the conclusion of that fight. and of course, despite refusing to wholly consume his soul, when fighting Ianthe Silas falls back on old habits to steamroll Colum's agency, and ends up opening the path for the River Devil that comes and kills them both. I think it is very intentional that this is framed as a consequence of Silas overriding Colum's agency and treating Colum like a tool and not a person, and I think the rest of their arc is going to address this. in HtN, when Silas fled Harrow's bubble, I am convinced that he went to go find Colum's soul.

im very interested to see where their arc leads re: forgiveness, atonement, etc, especially in the context of Gideon's forgiveness of Harrow in the pool scene, Hot Sauce's forgiveness of Nona, and Ortus & Harrow's mutual forgiveness of each other. how do we make it right when it can never be made right, how can we move forward without ever being able to erase what we have done to each other?

oh, also, continuing on the note of something I just mentioned in the tags of my previous post--

(personal faith/religious-related ramble ahead)

I've been thinking lately that I really really need to read more of the Bible for myself. it's never been especially tough for me for me to love Scripture; all the details of the literary styles and motifs and metaphors and how the interpretations of certain passages have changed and shifted over the years and the history of everything and how it all came together--I'm an absolute *nerd* for all that stuff!! podcasts and YouTube channels like The Bible Project have really helped me to connect directly with Scripture in the last couple of years; when you've grown up in Church, it's so easy to take the Bible for granted, but resources like that have really helped me step back and look at it with new awe.

but for some reason, actually sitting down to read the Bible for myself is... really hard. I can listen to YouTube lectures and podcast episodes about the Bible all day, but actually sitting down and reading the plain text for myself every day for any real length of time is nearly impossible. I think a large reason for this is a lack of community. I don't have anyone else to keep me accountable, or to compare and contrast my thoughts with while reading. reading the Bible is usually quite lonely, because it's just me and the words and all my thoughts bouncing around in my head and there's nowhere for any of that to go. and I'm also extremely prone to get weighed down by details, instead of just reading it for its own sake and not worrying too much about the theological ramifications of every single line.

and then, I think there's also my own history, and specifically the history that I have with the Biblical wording I'm most familiar with. I've grown up mostly reading from and being taught from one specific translation of the Bible, and at this point I just feel like I have... a lot of baggage associated with that translation. and the thing is, I actually really like that translation! there's a lot of familiarity and comfort in it as well, and I genuinely enjoy a lot of the stylistic choices the translators made! but I think it's also a rather tough version to understand outside of an academic setting, and sometimes when I'm trying to read it myself I just... can't help but hear all those twisted, hurtful doctrines that I was taught for years because of ignorant or purposefully malicious men who tried to use the ambiguity and antiquity of certain wordings to shoehorn in their own agendas. plus, there's the simple problem of the familiarity of the words making it easy for me to zone out or get antsy while reading; which doesn't help my focusing problems.

this post isn't really going anywhere except to say that I think the best thing for me right now is to try to read my Bible more publicly, to try to tell people I'm going to do it so that then I'll at least have a semblance of accountability when I'm tempted to drop it again, and that I think I want to try reading from a different translation than the one I've grown up with. just to trick my brain into thinking this is all new and interesting (because it is! Scripture is always new and interesting! but my brain is dumb and won't believe me if it thinks it already knows the words), and to separate the words of Scripture from those bad associations that certain passages call to mind.

i do understand why you’re asking this, it’s not stupid at all. sure, if you currently don’t have any followers, then it might not do as much as if you had lots. but no matter how few or how many followers you have, it is still the best way for you to support writers on here. 

if you are concerned about gaining followers, then just the act of reblogging stuff can still be enough to attract some. now idk what your blog looks like, if it's completely empty or what, but i have a handful of secret sideblogs where i don’t make any original posts, just reblog things, and they still have more then 0, because just reblogging can still bring some attention to your blog and thereby maybe also some followers. I also know a lot of authors that block ghost blogs, so just be aware of that.

but the bottom line is that it is the best way to support people on here and if you wanna do it, then do it. but if you feel like your lack of reach to people is currently too small and thereby making your reblog seem pointless to you, if you really did enjoy it, then tell us that. add a comment, add your reaction, point out your favourite sentences or just add a funny reaction pic. there are so many ways to make an author feel your love, even just you popping in here on anon and generally saying that you enjoy my stuff. that means so so much. you don’t need a bunch of people who you can get to look at a thing you enjoyed to make the creator smile. I don't know a single author who doesn't have their gloomy day turn around at least a little bit by a reblog that is so clearly full of love, no matter who it is by. they have so much power, you have no idea. because yes it is amazing to boost and to help others find the good stuff, but if you add the sparkle on top? that always knocks our socks off.
